Laxmii released last week again reiterates the importance of the box office as without this there is no judge. The film has faced a double barrel sword with the negativity in the media and the leftover negativity on social media for the industry. These things will also happen for the bigger films as it hardly matters if you are negative for a Lootcase, Gunjan Saxena or Ludo as that hardly makes noise and is not noticed.
The ground realities for the Laxmii are different from what they are made out to be. The film has gone wrong in certain points and it would not have done well in all circuits but its not the worst film ever made and actually would have held some appeal for Maharashtra, Gujarat and CP Berar (Nizam may have done decent also). A Diwali release would have bumped up the audience further as Gujarat is phenomenal on Diwali for this genre and Maharashtra also gets a big boost. North would have been struggle as there its grandness and gloss or relatability which works and here the grandness is not there and a transgender theme takes away all relatability.
The scenario takes us back to last year when another Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull 4 was lambasted by one and all but the results were totally different as it went on cross 200 crore nett and become the highest grosser of Akshay Kumar. Now Laxmii is not a Housefull 4 in terms of canvas or entertainment so it would have not reached those levels but its also not a Padman or Gold to remain on the lower side especially on Diwali.
The facts are that if this pandemic had by chance come last year and cinemas were shut then Housefull 4 would have been called a disaster or a totally rejected film and the only reason it was not called this is because the boxoffice was there to prove otherwise. Yes there are the phenomenal satellite results which continue even till today but those come at a later date. Forget a Housefull 4 or Laxmii but imagine if there was no box office for the likes of Sholay (1975), Kranti (1981) or Gadar (2001) which are among the most appreciated Hindi films of all time but what was being said about them was the opposite. The box office set the records straight.
What comes out of the mouth can never be taken seriously and this has been seen in the last few months with what has been said about the industry. The mouth is free and there is no cost to open it no matter how much crap comes out from it but the box office has a cost of a ticket so is the actual reality. Last year a terrible film like Saand Ki Aankh was supposed to give competition to Housefull 4 as the claim was public reports were good so it should at least trend better but reviews and public reports are two different things and Housefull 4 even sustained far better.
This year the campaining seems to be for another disaster Ludo. The film which will be unwatchable for most is being called a good film and again this is where the box office is needed for the actual facts so the stupidity does not last too long as it will now. Just like Laxmii would not have reached the levels of Housefull 4 then this Ludo would have struggled to even reach a Saand Ki Aankh.
The fact is that the boxoffice is the ultimate judge as a box office vote is through the pocket and not the mouth.
Jay, the point i mad in other thread, there’s no way to judge unless you can put a number on new subscription due to a specific film.
I think you had said 900k new subscriber were added few days before Laxmii release, if that’s true than i think that’s a success attributed to Laxmii.
However if the OTT was adding around 800k new subscriber monthly anyway, than having additional 100k isn’t worth the 125 crore investment/expense.
Only point i don’t like in BOI writeup is about equating housefull4 to laxmii. they’re not both same type of films. housefull had multistars, sequal, couple mass songs, big budget going for it.
BOI write up from last week said 900k new users ON DAY OFF Laxmii release. Something like that and I don’t know where they could attain that figure from anyway.
oh, i thought it was from some financial institution.
Well, i’m not going to say BOI is lying but Disney/Hotstar would have came out with big announcement if you can prove that you added about million new subscriber ON DAY OFF…
In India’s scenario with audiences from different territories completely chalk & cheese and OTT yet to penetrate into the interiors, box office will remain the best judge of a film’s popularity for many years to come. Laxmii would surely have found an audience in the B/C centers and the satellite performance of the film will prove this, once its premiered on Star Gold. It might have been a 100-150 Cr nett grosser for a Diwali release in a pre covid scenario.
Not denying this but this write up is trying hard to taper over what is obviously a disaster on OTT (probably)
Yes a in theatre experience is different and can ultimately upgrade an opinion on a film but this movie could have released in theatres but didn’t. Only Z has said it’s ok and that’s 2 on 5. Rest have pretty much avoided it or mauled it.
One CEO statement and 2 BOI articles (and articles in general) don’t prove anything. Even using TRP ratings from TV would be unfair on Laxmii as barometer of success. It’s already exhausted a tv audience via OTT.
You can judge Laxmii when another biggie releases on OTT or you carry on judging it against likes of Sadak 2.
That’s like me saying I’m Tendulkar at cricket in my home vs my wife and my kids – a silly and obvious win. A walk over match up that carries no meaning really.
I think Laxmii would have done quite well in B and C centres…It is not as bad as HF4 for sure. I think the bad reviews are largely due to the tone of the movie. It is a one time watch. Nothing more nothing less
One thing i will say for Laxmii is if it had released alongside Radhe or any bigger movie it would have got badly mauled in theatres. Considering it is a standalone release it would have done 120cr i feel…largely by B and C centres and single screens
We don’t know how bad Radhe is yet! I wouldn’t call that one yet! Laxmii might wallop Radhe. We don’t know what disaster awaits us. I think Laxmii may have walloped TOH or Tubelight in long run.
I am only saying there is no ‘real data’ from OTT to make any assessment of success or failure. Even a theatre release or satellite rights/TRP scenario is contaminated by a first time OTT release. Audience is already in the know. You can only judge Laxmii via how another biggie releases on OTT (if that happens again in covid scenario) and taking the word of CEO is like taking the word of jose Mourinho after he lost a match. He will blame something else other than his choices.
1> It is too much — for me at least — to get an yearly subscription to a platform JUST because a movie, in my case, let’s say, JHUND is releasing. I only have NETFLIX and AMAZON PRIME [ both shared by family] on end. I really want to watch SCAM the Harshad Mehta story but I am not going to subscribe to Sony Liv [or whatever platform] just because I am looking forward to it. I will make an exception as I made getting myindian.tv for 40$ for 3 months just for KBC. I do it only for KBC and Cricket.
2> There are platforms that offer 30 days free trial. I can trick them into signing up when a film I want to see is going to be released and then decline. However, even if I haven’t paid, does it show up in the dashboard that I signed up the night before LAXMI was released?
3> For ongoing subscribers, is the count measured? If I watched RAAT AKELI HAI twice or thrice, does that incremental count get added? [Am not paying anything extra here for Amazon and Netflix!! I was already a subscriber when RAH was released]; actually, it is my family but I am just an add-on; just like they are add-on to NETFLIX]
4> What if I watch a movie over a period of time? Qualitative metrics? Boredom? Or can I start on Monday, watch in 30 minutes sporadically over the week, and finish on a week-end?? This problem isn’t there in a movie theater is there? Straight-forward walk-out if you are bored but you have purchased the ticket.
5> The only thing is, OTT continuation for big films might kind of bring ‘stars’ on a somewhat even platform. Who’s is going to whistle for a Salman or Shahrukh or Akshay movie? [Not that this is a metric; but just a ‘visual’ representation of the craze for stars irrespective of the film’s quality.] How is a front-loaded film measured?
6> Right now, with cases in a so-called-developed country like the US, the CV is soaring upwards; and this is just the beginning. There will be no NO TIME TO DIE or any big-screen block-busters. We don’t even know when the theatrical revenue model will start re-kicking in again.
OTT is a measured, lazy viewing. It brings out the lethargy in you because you have time on your hands.
If the above points are meaningless, please ignore it!
Please delete non USA election related comments from USA Election thread too. Starting with my own that are non USA election related. Sorry for posting them to begin with but it was more of a retaliation. I should be a bigger man tho and not fall for low level stuff like that.
I have a deep respect for Munna so am letting it go, but is kind of intriguing that telling Naveen to go back to Canada along with his idol was not considered a personal comment and has not been deleted .
Oh Well!!!
Most of us live outside India; Going to live in Canada, US or anywhere doesn’t have same connotation as go to Pakistan which is either religious or you have bad things about India; People were warned after this comment and Naveen himself riles most members by himself without being abusive. There is friendly banter; he takes some jabs and gives some back; all in good humor. There are many comments with Canada in reference and they are deleted immediately because they are not adding to discussion and they are more like flame throwing than opinion.
What a reasonable article amd resonated with fact, fiction, lies and more lies.
My point exactly. On what basis are likes of Master etc using their time of their life to claim Laxmii has not done well. Its based on social media WoM.
What comes out of the mouth can never be taken seriously and this has been seen in the last few months with what has been said about the industry. The mouth is free and there is no cost to open it no matter how much crap comes out from it but the box office has a cost of a ticket so is the actual reality.

Z – you missed reading this:

Naveen says-
And finally it is now clear that noone in this forum possess the skill to watch a film and predict its outcome, esp in case of genres like this from a big star. One can at best guess.
Several times one has felt underwhelmed but the movie did better at box office.
So why this one upmanship that ” i know, i am telling you, i watched the movie and this would have or would not have
…🤣🤣🤣”
Bhai, its better you dont watch. Claim only when you have facts, now just an opinion.
Another sucess for Akshay
Another attempt to deny
Life mein kela hone likha hai
To banana factory ko open karwa de kya? 😉🤣😁
Please ask CEO of Disney Hotstar if Laxmii sequel will be commissioned. If yes I will declare it ATBB just for you otherwise neither you or I know it’s economical success PERIOD. Only thing I know is its IMDb ratings have skyrocketed over the weekend a massive 100%.
Yes 100% – from 1/10 to 2/10. Pretty much the same ratings I’m seeing in most public ratings every where.
BOI is your only saving grace as usual and a CEO who wouldn’t want to kill his business model by mauling his biggest investment.
None of what you are saying makes sense or sounds reasonable.
BOI has summed up the situation pretty well. Without box office parameter one doesnt know. OTT deal is perplexing indeed. I dont understand their business.
Cinema exhibitors like PVR have also purchased from producers but they allowed other exhibitors to show it as well. Also theatrical business is far more open and transparent (cant beleive i am saying this) than OTT.
So one can only tell that because all parties concerned made money, claimed it a success, then further argument is futile. BOI article needs to be read again. Its mature, honest and sensible.
Are we going to judge all OTT release based on WoM or what our coterie say?
The answer to this is provided by BOI article above. There is nothing more to add. For a second i thought Jayshah of NG days wrote it. Those days you were kind and relaxed.
Its neither a success nor a failure as of now. Lets wait for the satellite ratings to be out. A 100 cr nett would have been a Below Average while 150 cr is Average/Semi Hit at best.
“On what basis are likes of Master etc using their time of their life to claim Laxmii has not done well.”
I posted just 1 article link. I don’t even care if it’s doing well or not but more into.. how the treatment won’t resonate after a decade of original and that appear to be true with many not liking the movie. It is more about content/treatment than fake news about records being broken by Disney CEO.
Bollywood Hungama also said Laxmii debacle and they are not gossip site as far as I know. Just write “Laxmii debacle” in google search, you will get tons of articles regarding the same. It is not anyone’s personal opinion.
Lsc, Pathan, Tiger 3 – Khans are making special appearances for each other in every other film. Not sure how much this will help these movies, but a film with all 3 khans together in lead roles can surely bring back the audience to the theaters.
I think most theatres are open in India. The exhibitors are expecting some big A star film at least by Christmas to get them out of doldrums. They need as much money as they can in Nov-Dec since come Jan, situation is bound to worsen in most of the country. One can understand their frustration.
But if most theaters are open, than i think they should release movies. But if they have rules like only 25% capacity, than not sure how profitable it will be for the exhibitors.
These are difficult times with never knowing what will happen next. Let’s say Rohit/Akshay release Sooryavanshi this friday and there’s outbreak and gvmt closes down everything on monday, where does that leave the exhibitors?
These exhibitors are pretty rich people, imagine the situation of millions and millions of people who has to earn daily to feed their family, what is their life like?
The capacity is 50% across India. Exhibitors have no right to crib since they themselves refused to release Laxmii in theaters due to pure ego issues! One release at a time over the next 3-4 month period is the way forward. Every film will get adequate screens and weeks to showcase their potential that way. This is where Hollywood at least sets the record straight. Tenet took a gamble and now WW84 has confirmed a theatrical as well as a streaming release simultaneously this Christmas.
50% capacity is really good. Barring first few days films rarely go full house so a big film should try to release. But it’s not just about getting the film there – the audience to has to feel safe. Cinemas should really sort out good pricing just to get people in. Hopefully they will see that extra premium they continued to inflate for past 15 years can be covered by footfalls (even if they are limited).
We could be back to golden old days where give big movie a competition free run for a month and let it collect as much as it can. Then on to next big movie. This way you’ll have spot for 12 big movies and then have medium budget movies ready too so in case if a big movie tanks in first few days, you have a back up ready to go.
This is just high overview idea and would need lots of work and coordination but i think it can work.
But you have to be ready for total closure at any time.
Aamir did this and this is perfect inspiration for folks to get into cinemas. But again everyone has to take their own life/health decisions and be accountable and can’t blame Aamir or govt.
Being Devil’s advocate, why does Aamir watching Fatima’s movie now proves that there’s no affair? We can argue the affair is still alive and he didn’t care covid and still risked his health to watch Fatima’s movie in cinemas! 🙂
Audience turnout is crucial to most exhibitors, since their discussions with film producers hinge on how many people will return to movie halls in the weeks ahead.
This is because around 40 per cent of a movie’s revenue comes from the box office, which is, in turn, dependent on footfalls and ticket price.
While the average ticket price for multiplex operators is Rs 150-Rs 200, the first few months will see a 20-25 per cent discount to encourage visits.
Discounts are also expected on food and beverages, with bookings, check-in and food ordering all going contactless as part of the standard operating procedures.
Nahta says the October-December period may continue to be weak for the sector due to lack of compelling content.
OTT hysteria has fallen FLAT. There is NO match to the big screen when it comes to commercial content. Period! OTT is best for web streaming series and TV programs or low budget films. Big ticket crowd pullers or mega budgeted productions have little to no value on digital streaming platforms as they have on the IMAX 70mm or even a regular movie theater.
The big problem for OTT is that even without cinemas open, it’s not generating enough revenue and imagine if cinemas are open and running well, the revenue will be like 10% of the current numbers!
I wonder we would have thought about HF4, if HF4 had not released in theatres.
Noone i know liked that movie. Still a huge section loved it in theatres where it was superhit and more in television where HF4 is a blockbuster.
HF4 ki to samaadhi bana di thi on day 1.
Public reviews were so different.
With no public reviews likes of these blue ticked self proclaimed trade analysts can say whatever they want and get away.
Covid and no release in theatres have given them a lease of life.
There is an audience for these kid of cinemas and most here on digital platform are not those audience.
I would have had problem with Akshay if he had done one Laxmii in three years. But hats off to him to do Good Newws And Laxmii together. Audience of one would not like the content of other.
Naveen, you fighting a losing battle. Housefull is a franchise and its 4th part of the series. More than 50% audience is given and only next few % needs to give it a shot and it’ll do business. I don’t think anyone ever Housefull 4 will wrap under 50 crores even if it’s bad. Kids also play important role in such movies and released during holiday season.
HF4 and Laxmii are not on same level in any comparison. Laxmii couldn’t have done 200 crores like HF 4 even if released last year. As simple as that.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathan is said to be an action film and will be produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films. While Shah Rukh will play the titular role, actress Deepika Padukone has reportedly been roped in as his co-star. Deepika Padukone debuted in Bollywood opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 film Om Shanti Om and then they co-starred Happy New Year and Chennai Express – all three films were box office hits.
Last seen in the 2018 film Zero, Shah Rukh recently produced Netflix projects such as Bard Of Blood and Class Of ’83. He will also produce the film Bob Biswas and a crime-thriller titled Love Hostel.
I was mentioning it above and it just happened in one big city. Delhi may do same.
Hard to think about releasing big movies in this type of unpredictable times. Hope people stays safe. I see on news that many in India are very laxed like some of the states here in USA. Covid is real and it has killed more than million people. Be safe.
Rise in Covid cases: Night curfew in Ahmedabad from today, ‘complete curfew’ till Monday
it is in complete denial about the washout that laxmii is and coming up with speculative theatrical numbers which. is pure bs. my guess is Naveen is working at BOI.
Fair assessment by BOI in covid situation.
Why are you are in complete denial about the possibilities of Laxmii in theatre and coming up with speculative numbers which is pure bs. 🤣🤣
The public reviews have significantly improved after the first 2 days. One look at twitter and others show that the movie is not as bad as was made to be.
Now reviews are strictly decent and not outright negative. This shows that the movie would have done okayish. 140-150 cr would have been a low number for this genre, which clearly shows that multiplex audience would completely reject it.
For 9K votes, Housefull 4 has 3.4 IMDB rating. Honestly, I can’t fathom Laxmmi being worse than that film. Most of the IMDB reviews keep stressing on the imaginary Love Jihad angle and if you take that and the usual “Boycott Bollywood” brigade votes, it’d be a 4-5 which is a given for the genre.
If Housefull 4 can do well (and please, it’s no multistarrer, unless you want to count DJ Deol as a star), Laxmmi definitely would have made 150 in normal conditions. Burj Khalifa and Bam Bhole are pretty trash catchy songs, I can already see a Burj Khalifa challenge on social media or a Bam Bhole saree dance. Housefull 4 had only Bala.
But it has performed badly on OTT as per any and every one, there are even articles about executives demanding a preview of Coolie No.1 after this. Accept it, it was a mistake to put it on OTT but made profits for producers hugely.
Bobby Deol wasn’t in there for couple minutes. He was there from first frame to the last frame of the film.
I have seen both films and one of the only one (besides i think Krissh) who said that it’s not as bad as people are making it out to be here.
Having said that, you would have to pay me to watch Laxamii again on TV, however i wouldn’t mind watching HF4 again over laxamii because laxamii looks and feels like made for TV movie, versus HF4 is big budget movie from any and every angle you look at it.
There’s a reason why HF4 collected as much as it did. Let’s not take that away from it. It did few things right which target audience was looking for.
I mean to say, I don’t think Laxmmi is worse than Housefull 4. I saw some parts of that movie and those pigeon poop jokes can no way be better.
By multistarrer, I mean that the credit for the success of H4 is wholly on Akshay and Akshay alone, since none of the other male leads are actors, let alone stars. The ladies were around for eye candy. If he can power this one to 200+, Laxmmi, which at least has some coherent story would have made 150+ solo easily. Although no one knows what would have happen if Radhe vs. Laxmmi happened. But when a bad film releases against an average film, the average one does much better (Ex: Rustom).
Let me tell you that noone here understand massy cinemas the way BOI does.
I am surprised why even one is trying to consider thwir opinion better. I mean what credential likes of Yodha has. Its laughable that he is even able to talk cinema and even i accept that the claims in box office by him is as entertaining as a PJ
Talking about the Khans, I did this little piece on SRK’s birthday, now that I think, it’s way more interesting than endlessly arguing about whether Laxmmi was a hit or flop with one fanatic:
Emotional and excellent writeup.
Aman, I have been with your journey without knowing each other. It seemed my words and sentiments too.
While others (incl Akshay) are stars, SRK for me is an emotion. His loss seems to be my loss. I still feel Ra.One was well made except for the end which looked animated. I enjoy it on television. His films one can always watch with family. His acting is class apart. What others sometimes call his mistakes(Over acting, etc), i call it his style. Every superstar over acts and thats only for his fans and they love it. So do I.
The stardom of SRK among the khans was the longest, highest and greatest. His movies shaped the Bollywood the way it is now.
If i have to pick one movie from the next release of all the three khans then from Radhey, LSC amd Pathaan , my choice will be for Pathaan.
SRK always had this uncharacteristic charm and unpredictability. Thats why i am happy that he has started shooting exactly an year after i saw him on a red carpet last year. There were thousands and thousands who stoof for hours for one glimpse. I was one of them.
1. Darr – If you haven’t seen Darr in theatre then you know less of SRK.
2. K3G – OTT and TV viewing junta of Satyam shot diss at K3G. Wish they had seen the electricity in the theatre i watched. it was nuclear energy.
3. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa – Brilliant and at many level my best SRK movie
4. Baazigar – When SRK flips Shilpa shetty over, the star was born.
5. Karan Arjun – This was best Film Kraft movie of 90s till they made Kaho Naa.
On TV, of course in like Chak De and Swades also and would keep it in top 5. But theatrical experience is something to treasure and those movies should only be watched there.
I can see why people might despise the NRI romance brand, but Swades, Chak De and one of the best coming-of-age films in Hindi, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa are third class? While the narratively uneven Darr is somewhat watchable. Strange standards, I must say.
Wasn’t referring to KHKN, Swades & CDI. Swades is a classic imo while the other 2 are good well made films. My reference was to all other SRK rom nonsense staring from a somewhat watchable DDLJ to the despicable KKHH, DTPH, Mohabbatein, K3G, Veer Zaara & RNBDJ.
Shivaay, can you give us list of 10 movies you liked in past 10 years. Just curious to see what your likes are cause it’s like you don’t like much of anything about Bollywood.

Mine combined in last 10 years, I may have missed some;
Ankhon Dekhi, Andha dun, Dangal, Baahubali: The Beginning, Tumbbad, Drishyam (Malayalam), Visaranai (Tamil), Ratsasan (Tamil), Kabir (Bengali), Mumbai Police (Malayalam).
Many of SRK’s celebrated movies between DDLJ and Mai Hoon Na now appear average (with very rare exceptions like Dil Se). I feel this was the time period that was key to his career, and contrary to what his expectations of global superstardom he might be aiming for, he lost a sizeable chunk of his fanbase. He should have instead used his soaring popularity to do some meaningful cinema and carved a niche for himself. Ultimately he didn’t even make it big on the Hollywood level, except sparse fanbase in Germany and the Middle East.
Tony, I think when one is at superstar level (and we have to be true to this title, not how it gets used for everybody), the audience expect almost same thing in every film. the superstar aura has to be there. This was true for Amitabh too. So even a fine film with great acting by dilip/amitabh will not do the type of business that a movie like Mard did.
I think SRK tried to do different things thru out with keeping superstar in mind and failed be is ashoka, paheli, raone, etc. So in this sense he not only lost at boxoffice but at critics level too.
This is the part where some of the most vociferous disagreements came in the response to what I wrote. I think I now know why. As someone who was first conscious of SRK’s stardom in ’07 and ’08, with CDI, OSO and Rab Ne, I look back and may be less detached than someone who was around the early 90s. At the start of anyone’s career, they have the freedom to play more roles and may in general be more risk taking. SRK only got lucky that Baazigar, Darr and his films with Aziz Mirza, Kundan Shah were hits and somewhat come across as quality films. But post DDLJ, one notices the offbeat films like PBDHH, Asoka were all his productions. He has worked with everyone from Mani Ratnam to Mansoor Khan, and most made bad flops with him. He also lacks judgement when it comes to scripts and since all these offbeat films flopped, he just did what worked best: cash in on Raj and Rahul.
Where he lost his base was the early ’10s, again every star has a fall but when his contemporaries started having their best time simultaneously (very rare anywhere) is what hurts even worse. I’d say due to opening up China, Aamir is way ahead in terms of an overall appraisal of this generation. But with some right choices, SRK can be back again.
I don’t think many of his contemporaries have excellent script sense either. Contrary to media reports and the “perfectionist” image associated with certain stars, I feel they have a strong PR working for them. A star can’t do anything much there unless he has a very strong team working for him in building a certain image and bringing to them the choicest scripts. I suspect its the people close to SRK who haven’t been providing very sound advice. I’m pretty curious to see how it is he fails to strike a chord with the audience despite being a reasonably fine performer. Not that a film like Chennai Express (in choice of scripts) is better than the likes of Fan and Raees (not bad films, in fact on par with a lot of stuff Akki and Salman have been making quite regularly). Ra.One for instance was a misfire but I wouldn’t label it a lazy effort.
Might be the audience got enough of him and he overstayed his welcome after his peak in 2007. Something went wrong, somewhere. Difficult to pinpoint.
In short, him trying to do different films actually hurted him more because the films turned out bad so never mind boxoffice, but they didn’t get critical approval either barring Swades.
After that i think was just a snowball effect.
A point Satyam used to make a lot which i didn’t agree at that time but I do whole heartedly now that SRK was trying to manufacture a hit versus making a film. In that process he lost sense of film making.
So if you look at Main Hoon Na, the film flows so well from start to end but Happy New Year feels artificial where things are inserted with thought that it will work at boxoffice.
Boi’s probable for Laxmii is at 110-140 cr net, accounting for the holiday/non holiday factor. Poor performance, not even at par with Kesari which despite being shot on a large canvas & made exclusively for the big screen, could not muster up more than 150 cr.
There are some interesting comments by Naveen on theatre watching experience, and i agree with him. Watching movie in theatre bring the experience to another level because there are other around you who will boo, laugh and clap with you.
Having said that (I think i might have asked same question in past), what 3 movies you wish you could watch in theatre that you didnt’ due to whatever reason like it was before your time, movie didn’t play in your area (if you’re out of India), just missed it, etc…
My 3:
1) Mughal E Azaam – Imagine seeing this back in 1960 with huge budget, set pieces, big cast (mainly due to Dilip Kumar), hit songs, war battles scenes, dialoguebazi, etc… This was made for Big Screen experience.
2) Sholay – I had seen it in theatre but I was too young to fully understand the brilliance of it. Would love to see it again to fully appreciate it.
3) Gadar – I’m sure many will think I’m nuts but I think Gadar was one of the last true masala films which had masala ingreidents of old movie making, it had all in right amount of doses. Would have loved to seen this in theatre. It didn’t play near my area in USA. I think critics and media at that time were in love with lagaan and didn’t give due credit to Gadar. Of course the paying audience did.
SRK like Rajesh Khanna in the past made hay when the sun shone by flogging the rom-com horse till it was viable. The problem with relying on romance & romance alone is that once you’re past your prime, the genre’s no longer effective as younger stars like Ranbir & Shahid were ready to take over the mantle. Amitabh in his prime was much more than just an angry anti establishment action hero with successful comedies like Hera Pheri & Namak Halaal as well as a tryst with romance in Kabhi Kabhi & Silsila. SRK unfortunately just never had anything really going for him except romance & once he was past 50, this genre would no longer work for you. Most of his experiments like Dil Se, Asoka, Josh, Swades (unfortunate flop, his best film yet by miles), Paheli etc fell flat on their face. He’d have done well to revisit his anti hero Baazigar/Darr avatar later on in his filmography but by the time he signed Fan & Raees, it was far too late. Even with them, Fan had a bogus second half while Raees fell flat due to poor writing & character development.
True, Srk has capitalized so much on the romcom genre that a reinvention of his image has turned out to be too difficult in recent times. He now has 3-4 films lined up back to back. Its likely that some of them may work at box office to some level; but none seems like a gamechanger for him, at least on paper.
What he needs is a solid hit in an elderly role. Something like Dangal – something that will give enough fuel for a second innings.
Aamir on the other hand seems to be concentrating on life without films with him in leading roles. Producing and directing next gen stars may well be the way forward for him.
Blind fanaticism of SRK does not change the fact that he’s nothing beyond a romantic hero and its only among a foolish audience like our’s that a rank over acting hamming artist ends up becoming a super star.
I agree, very difficult. We can go on about China and people thronging theatres in Korea and NZ, but these countries simply didn’t have the economic loss that India (or in general, most of the world) did in this year.
But by November 2021, things might be back to what used to be. Unless, God help us.
Bollywood may recover by next year end, but unlikely to the extent of 50 cr opening records or 400 cr totals. Its going to be a long road to that point.
Tenet officially releasing in India on Dec 4th. But doubt if it will do more than 20-25 cr nett in present conditions and given the mixed international wom.
Night curfews in multiple states again. Cinemas in threat of restrictions or shut downs all over again. No wonder Sooryavanshi & 83 are postponed to 2021.
Watched the first season of Mirzapur. Senseless violence & gore along with over the top, melodramatic sex scenes (i wonder whether anyone in their right frame of mind would howl while making out, I’d never do it for sure!) ruin an otherwise taut story and screenplay that could have been so much better off without the needless sex & gore. Writers of gangster dramas must surely revisit Satya & Company to know how to create a thrilling gangster drama without the disgusting histrionics, foul slurs & sadistic violence. Pankaj Tripathi as usual is top notch but the rest of the cast is quite unconvincing (more bc/mc than dialogue definitely doesn’t help). Overall a 5/10 from my side.
Its a web series as far as I know. And yes the first time. Much better than the foul, slur inducing violent trash that Sacred Games & Mirzapur have delivered.
Watched it for the second time, this time on a big, smart TV. I believe theatre viewing would have been ideal to appreciate the work done with visuals on this one. Someone compared it to a Wes Anderson film in terms of tone and setting, and yet some critics called it ‘insensitive’ for its fairytale-like portrayal of Nazi Germany. But it’s irreverent, fun, and self-aware. At the same time, it’s poignant, serious, and pretty solid, on the whole. Loved it.
Liked the kid and Scarlett Johansson. The latter well-deservedly received an Oscar nomination, her presence looming large even when she’s not present. A scene where she ‘becomes’ the father and dances to communicate with her child is a riot, and one of my favourite moments from it.
60 years of Dharmendra! A true blue superstar (gave BBs & ATBBs despite doing 4-5 films a year unlike some pretenders who give that as an excuse for mediocre grosses), his popularity being at par with Bachchan Sr right till the early 80s (ABs reinvention post Mohabbatein elevating him of course) and one of the real mass action heros of his times.
Dharmendra had the masculinity, machoism, looks and personality which is must for that huge all India megastar, what this meant was that many sub standard films were pushed to success as it was not about the film or acting but the public coming to watch the star. Today the only similar star is Salman Khan and its the personality and machoism.
He was good across various genres. And never required excuses to not give BBs & record grossers despite doing 4 films a year (unlike some of today’s pretentious superstars).
Lol. Nothing, really. Gundagardi has become the new normal. You may be uneducated, behave like a street goon, talk negative and utter bullcrap, but as long as you portray yourself as a shiv bhakt and have the support of a political party, you can get away with anything.
This guy called Puneet Vashisht was seen in small roles in Bollywood in the early 2000s.
Biggest irony in the SSR investigation and the NCB probe is that Vivek Oberoi’s BIL got arrested, Vivek Oberoi got investigated, Bharati Singh and her husband got arrested, Sandip SSingh got accused of being both a drug peddler and a pedophile. The coincidence between them as per IMDB credits is this:
PM Narendra Modi (2019)
Produced by: Sandip SSingh
Written by: Harsh Limbachiyaa (husband of Bharti Singh)
Starring: Vivek Oberoi in and as Narendra Modi
Seems like the BJP is working with the drug cartel, doesn’t it?
You guys rather hope that the good for nothing opposition gets its act together before its too late & the goons republic party becomes a solo entity across the landmass.
Please explain anything wrong with the draft of this. Its got no mention of communal bias & is essential to check rampant activities by rogue religious bodies. These acts have been common since the 1960s.
PVR Cinemas in New Delhi playing Inception, Dunkirk, Interstellar & DDLJ right now. I wouldn’t mind watching the first 2 on the big screen all over again in these times!
Akshay Kumar is the only actor on our Highest-Paid Actors list who hasn’t worked in Hollywood. He’s a huge deal in Bollywood, though, starring in over 150 movies in the past decade—we take you inside his $48.5 million year https://t.co/fPVAhg2Lixpic.twitter.com/B9Kfk2uNsp
I managed to watch another movie within a week. Maybe celebrating my theatre viewing which is now a privilege.
Ans what a movie TENET is !!! The perfect Spy thriller to begin your weekend with.
I was surprised to see Dimple Kapadia in a very relevant role. She is a delight to watch and so is Mumbai, one of the 7-8 cities where this movie is shot.
Storyline:
In a twilight world of international espionage, an unnamed CIA operative, known as The Protagonist, is recruited by a mysterious organization called Tenet to participate in a global assignment that unfolds beyond real time. The mission: prevent Andrei Sator, a renegade Russian oligarch with precognition abilities, from starting World War III. The Protagonist will soon master the art of “time inversion” as a way of countering the threat that is to come.
An absolutely audacious, awe-inspiring film. Tenet earns my complete admiration for the effort and dedication on display here. The action scenes blow your mind, dialogs are witty, crisp and sharp, background noise is suitable for IMAX/VMAX and acting is superb.
Another masterpiece by one of the greatest cinematographers that ever lived. Nolan’s mind-bending TENET divulges into altering our basic principles of matter, entropy, space and time; it’s convoluted concept of positive entropy (which is yet to be proven false by the scientific community) governs the flow of an action movie, and transforms a simple movie about protagonist vs. antagonist into a thought provoking battle for good that defies (also yet to be proven false) the founding concepts of the universe.
Tenet is simply an incredible film with deep complex concepts. Low ratings with criticism of the film’s “over the top confusion” is more indicative of an audience that has been spoon-fed brainlessly simple ideas for far too long, than any legitimate flaw in Nolan sculpture of a flowing and seamless narrative thread. Despite its complexity (which I believe is an asset) the film is perfectly paced, the actors bring a fluid confidence that assures the audience that at the very least the characters understand “inversion” (even if we don’t fully), and the cinematography and score also hold up their weight alongside the driving narrative.
There is a understandable concern that the mix was not conducive to assisting the audience in understanding the various exposition dumps that occur throughout the film, however this could vary widely depending on the sound system used when viewing and in any event it did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the film at VMAX.
This is a film that challenges conventional story arcs, and was a breath of fresh air in a landscape that for years has featured repetitively unimaginative (but still enjoyable) action films such as those presented under the Avengers franchise. Hopefully this movie gains the recognition it deserves and Nolan is rewarded for breaking the mould in difficult year for large-budget cinema-based films. Perhaps Tenet is demonstrating a brilliant stroke of commercial genius on Nolan’s part; make a movie so confusing yet enjoyable that viewers MUST go back for a second viewing!
Overall, this movie is up there with the likes of Inception and Interstellar, as one of the greatest films that people – myself included – will probably re-watch time and time again.
I’m really glad I went out and caught this in theaters!
Very good review, Naveen. This has definitely piqued my interest, which had somewhat waned after reading mixed reviews. Now certainly eager to check it out myself
Caught up with Inception at a PVR multiplex in Bangalore this evening & still saw about a dozen people in the audi for this decade old sci fi thriller. The mesmerizing Nolan/Zimmer experience aside (i missed this at a theater in 2010) its surprising to see why makers of Sooryavanshi & 83 are not ready to release their films on Xmas. Even with 3 shows a day, a Dec release would give the films a good 2-3 months free run wherein they could garner footfalls & be in for the long haul. An unfortunate decision as these films are capable of reviving the box office to an extent (like Tenet did in the UK & China). Hats off to Warner Bros & Nolan for sticking to their guns despite the losses in the domestic market.
‘What America could figure out is that this finally was an American with an American passport operating in Pakistan who had access to Al Qaeda. Now the prime objective of that time was the capture of bin Laden.’
‘This is three years before Abbottabad, the only thing that the US intelligence agencies were thinking about was how do they decapitate him, how do they cut the head off of Al Qaeda and here was this tantalising, untrustworthy, difficult, hard to control, psychopathic individual, who was American.’
Adrian Levy, co-author of the book The Siege: The Attack on the Taj, speaks to Rediff.com’s Sheela Bhatt in an compelling interview.
This is one book that was dying to be written. The siege of the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai which began on November 26, 2008 by Pakistani terrorists and ended three days later was one emotion-filled, historic event that caught the world’s attention.
Not just Mumbai, but India was under siege as Pakistani jihadis went about killing 166 innocent people, largely Indians.
Those hours were filled with astonishment, anguish and anger. A few Indian authors published books soon after the terror attacks, but no Indian media or authors have brought out the depth of the event and spread of the operation that took place before the horrendous event and its implications for the future of India and the world.
The comprehensive version has now arrived in the form of The Siege: 68 Hours Inside the Taj Hotel. The distinguished authors Cathy Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy are well-respected names in South Asia with remarkable books like Deception: Pakistan, the United States and the Global Nuclear Weapons Conspiracy to their credit.
What is the big picture? Can you take us to Pakistan and let us understand the scene behind the attack?
I think there is a ladder here and I think that two things happened simultaneously.
The first thing is that Pakistan, the military and intelligence establishment, was going through a very tumultuous period.
Incredibly racked by problems, leading up to the Red Mosque siege in 2007, when you remember (then Pakistan president Pervez) Musharraf made the decision to send in his boys from the Special Services to storm the mosque.
That was a turning point for Pakistan. A watershed.
Because suddenly the jihad industry, which they nurtured and grew and that they funded and trained, had split. And after Pakistani forces were seen in a mosque, killing seminary students and women, then the movement split, many became radicalised and turned against the State-sponsored outfits and moved to Al Qaeda.
It was a very important event. So, the ISI, elements of the military, became very scared. They were no longer in control of the foot soldiers that General Zia-(ul Haq) created lovingly from 1979 onwards.
And at the same time one of the prime organisations that has done the foreign policy, the black foreign policy, of Pakistan is the Lashkar-e-Tayiba. The Army of the Pure had solely been focused diligently really on Kashmir. And that was the recruiting ground. But now it was losing people left, right and centre, its military council was split, people wanted to take up the Khajul (Islamic finance) for Ummah and not for Kashmir.
They wanted the pan-Islamic platform, like Al Qaeda. They were jealous of Al Qaeda, the young. So the ISI needed a plan, they needed to show up the jihad factory. Lashkar was split and needed something cohesive that could bring itself back together again.
LOL!!! This is to be expected my friend..How I wish, HOW I wish, it was not Modi but Rahul handling this; the ‘whiners’ would have gotten a taste of what ‘leadership’ entails. It is not going on a picnic when there are elections to be fought in Bihar…
As mentioned before, INDIA needs to be taught a lesson by making RA GA the prime…and eliminating BJP…
Don’t confuse a bunch of foolish clowns, such as the likes of Swara Bhaskar to India, which has consistently voted out the Congress from the past 5 years. Even after Obama pretty much called him unfit for politics, this imbecile still gets to keep his charge. The best thing to happen to Modi is Ra Ga.
No I am not. But this is the bunch of folks rally behind right? Nobody asks the question, what is BJP without the opposition? I mean, I just don’t understand this illogical angst against Modi, that’s all. CAA, everything, has been discussed to death. Folks have pointed out why it is a bunch of lies what the opposition claims.
As I said, I am still waiting for the concentration camps…If Macroni can be turned into a right-winger, Modi can also be turned into a left-winter..
‘Nothing surprises me about India’ anymore…
Does anyone want to know what the pain of ‘conversion’ looks like? here it is..
And by the way, before anyone points out the pain endured in Hinduism by way of upper-caste and Dalits, I, EVERYONE has recognized that, including Dr. Ambedkar… And think hard before one brings out Dr. Ambedkar, since I can counter that with Ambedkar himself…
Forget BJP and its ideology, the question is, who would one have countering Pakistan, China, and CV-19, and internal problems at the same time? Can anyone, please provide a name?
And I am not saying that Modi is doing excellent job. Or the BJP. Can we at least, as a nation, come together put those things apart and realize that we need to support someone who is doing whatever he can?
The so-called ‘#1 country’; we have seen what DT has done..can we have some nuances when comparing?
I support whatever Modi is doing countering COVID, Pak and China. I despise the utter mess he has made of the economy with his fool hardy measures like demonetisation. Just because he is the only one doesn’t mean he is the chosen one, above criticism.
There are plenty of things one can hit Modi on, all justifiable and true, including the CAA and NRC. There is of course a certain elite dislike of him that reeks of class bias, which I despise. But that isn’t the only complaint people have with him. He’s not a failure at every level, but a disappointment nonetheless. Vajpayee is still the gold standard in PMs, at least for me.
And about internal problems, maybe, they can handle it better, if a collection of union minsters, mps and cms didn’t go around Municipal elections trying to sow communal chaos. These aren’t some fringe that Modi can’t control.
Conversions due to deceit and money is dangerous and harmful, it needs to be countered. I don’t know the exact details of the legalese and I won’t comment about it till then, but I wouldn’t trust the people who get offended by a Tanishq Ad to force staff at a store to apologize in making proper use of that law, except for blindly targeting inter religious marriages.
For a sentence that nothing surprises in India anymore, you post a link about a horror in Pakistan strangely. How many such cases occur here, and in proportion to the total number of such cases, based on all faiths is worth checking more.
Aman I never said, nor am implying that Modi or the BJP is above questioning. Demonetization, financial conundrum, caa everything, everything is questionable. But do you, at your analytical best, still find roots that each and every change that’s happened since 2014, has religious-hate at its core? How is it that nobody except Shekhar Gupta talks of gas cylinders reaching the homes of the deserving folks?
The reason I posted the conversion video is to show the actual pain of a conversion. And when one keeps saying that India is an unsafe place for minorities, I am stunned. Perfect? Of course not. Better? Yes. Needs more work? Yes.
LOL
No propaganda here. Rajamouli is under pressure to deliver a pan india hit after Baahubali success. So he is roping in as many Bollywood names as possible, be is special appearance, item songs or voice overs. Likes of Aamir, Ajay or Aliya wont mind such requests just to be in good books and possible future collaboration with the coveted director. Not that such gimmicks actually work at box office unless the movie is well made.
Thats right. Of course noone loses here.
But usually thwse gimmicks hypes the movie only to disappoint later.
RRR is my most awaited. I am looking for a great emotional revenge saga, the hall mark of all Rajamouli’s films. None had gimmicks so far.
Naveen- read Akshay Kumar instead of Aamir Khan and then write your comments. I bet my entire existence that your comment on an Akshay cameo in RRR would be 180 turn vs an Aamir cameo.
Who the fuck cares abt a voice over? Aamir will make real news when he signs his next after LSC. That will really work up Naveen! But it wont happen before Aamir’s next bday.
This is way too overblown, Ajay Devgn and Kajol had done the voice over for Eega’s Hindi version too.
If anyone thinks a voice over can make a difference to any film, they’re plainly wrong. And equally wrong if it seems like a marketing propaganda movie.
Marketing propaganda seems to be Brahmastra, I just can’t help but get this feeling that it won’t work. Cameos by SRK, Nagarjuna, the constant delays, the fact that we don’t even have a first look or poster yet, Ayan Mukerji has made nothing that makes one think he can take on a mythological superhero film. I’d be very surprised if this one clicks.
Brahmastra sounds like a big disaster.
I’m not sure about any big movie right now in Bollywood, even wouldn’t bet on LSC right now. It might be Hollywood leading the charge in India first.
My piece on Rangan’s blog regarding ‘Office Space’
————-
It is important to note that the ‘burn-out’ and the reduction of human intelligence and the growth of so-called ‘artificial intelligence’ was so well-captured by the Master himself; Charlie Chaplin in ‘Modern Times’! That was in 1936! ‘Office Space’ is in 1999! It is hilarious that I myself dismissed Alvin Toffler’s ‘Future Shock’ as propaganda when I read it in the 10th grade! Now I remember some passages vaguely, and how truly futuristic it was!
While capitalism is the lesser of all evils, one wonders where it will end? Remember how we never cared about that poor girl in Bangladesh who worked on our 3$ Aeropostale T-shirts while we went about shopping in the malls? How that factory building collapsed? Who cared? Life just..continued. Now that is coming back to bite us middle-class couch-potatoes. Already, Mr. Tim Cook has announced that he is ready to allow permanent WFH for mostly all of his employees! Now, other companies are following suit citing that WFH has actually increased ‘productivity!’ What they are hiding from you is, they get the benefit of cutting costs since you use internet, electricity off of your personal bills! Why have a real estate? Why have a building with Keurig coffee-makers and printers?
I haven’t written this piece with any agenda, so if it doesn’t make sense, just ignore it. It is just that I found a connection to a movie I have always loved and is one of my favorites. And I always, always admire people who think ahead of their times, precisely because I have neither the knack nor the intelligence to do so.
They won’t. Remote working in the IT/BT & Telecom sector was always the future. Covid crisis has only accelerated something that was an eventuality. Going forward we might see a hybrid model wherein certain folks would prefer WFH while others within a joint family or kids to cater to might prefer the office environment to segregate their professional & personal lives.
Corporate is saving huge money by not running the facility fully and will save even lot more once they don’t have to renew their office space lease, or take out liability insurance of every single employees, or hire food catering services, etc… There’s so much savings for the corporate that I just don’t see why any company would want the employees to comeback.
India’s got its own logistical WFH issues (power interruptions esp in smaller towns, network disconnections etc) which is why a lot of us would be back to offices (at least partially) soon enough.
Here in USA, it’s good for most parts. i do have issues sometimes when the whole house is on net (kids online school classes, parents streaming on youtube, my work, etc…) but 99% of the time it’s good.
Z, you would like to think your kids are attending online classes when you yourself are watching youtube, huh? kids probably would have been on tiktok if it weren’t for the ban.
‘Greatest star ever doing voiceover for India’s top director. Akshay just keeps knocking the Khans over every week!’
Bla bla bla!
Instead here it’s now a propaganda movie. Till now not a word uttered against the movie (which was already a big bilingual full of South and North stars) but now some big motive just because Aamir is doing some silly pointless character introductions!
Naveen let me know when that bottle of hatred runs out.
OTT and theaters will coexist in future. But wake me up when the next 350-400 cr nett grosser comes along from Bollywood. Till then ll take a long nap.
One agrees or not, OTT has changed the game. Theatres will always have audience but lets not kid ourselves. OTT is here to stay and is making load of money and it doesn’t have to worry about covid or any other illness. in fact it will drive up the OTT business whenever there will be pandemic like covid.
Unless Tenet does like 150 crore business which opens up gateway for Bollywood to start releasing their films and we have big to medium budget film releasing week after week, OTT will be the go to option.
Tenet would not even have done 150 cr nett in the pre covid days. Be realistic about expectations. WW84 has a higher chance of doing 100 cr than Tenet, esp with 50% limit. OTT was never an alternate for movie theaters (as some hyperboles & doomsday predictors were hellbent on proving here). OTT is a sequel to satellite and cable television, low cost home entertainment option. Cinemas didn’t collapse when VCR’s or DVD’s or Blu Ray’s evolved. I don’t see them having an impact in the long run due to OTT too. Yes, in the near future with these restrictions, the numbers are bound to be impacted. But 3-4 years down the line I’m sure we’d have our 300 cr+ 30M footfall blockbuster.
Shivaay you have a habit of misrepresenting the entire OTT/cinema debate by defining it as a bunch of OTT lovers who are losers or lazy.
You don’t understand the practical aspects of cinema vs OTT to have a sane rational debate without throwing your toys out of a pram.
Look at the BOI article. 25k advance is like 0.002% of what is supposed to be a cinema crazy country. It’s nothing to get supremely overexcited about – it’s a start. A good start…
I would much prefer to watch a film in cinema vs at home BUT following things don’t stack up
– the economics are the biggest burden. It would only take 2 cinematic viewings (6 hours max) to break even on an annual subscription for Netflix
– each viewing involves travel to and from which is not involved with OTT
– each viewing for us personally is a logistical challenge. I have a 4 and 1 year old, I have to get babysitters to actually go out
– I can fast forward, rewind, rewatch in OTT
Cinema is now turning into an ‘experience’ as the economics involved are pricing people out. It should be affordable for more people.
I actually can’t understand your entire grievances here as your comments suggest a lack of understanding for a large segment of people like families…
No one is even saying cinema is dead but you keep on insinuating such things at regular intervals. Rather than penalizing OTT platform viewers start to blame greedy people like actors charging 30Cr or multiplexes increasing prices multiple times.
Your 30mn viewers point is again not as significant as you make it sound. At most you get 2 or 3 films per annum in India hitting that number. Again 2% of the population of a cinema loving country. It’s simply not a big number. India has potential but the economics are all wrong.
Nothing lasts forever. Here in the UK- the high street retailer is losing to online shoppers every day. It doesn’t imply shopping in public will die. No one is being overdramatic about this except you wrt OTT/cinema.
My solution here is that Bollywood needs to cut budgets and every cost in the chain needs to be slashed to actually increase footfalls. This is a way of keeping competitive. Also multiplex chains should do what OTT does with subscription monthly passes.
OTT is hurting Cable/Satellite too.
Already Netflix has some Nick Junior kids shows so why do I need cable/satellite for kids now?
Amazon Prime has shown English Football already.
If the economics stack up probably cable/satellite will need to rethink too.
Eventually it’s possible cable/satellite that replaced fixed channels will be replaced by OTT. I pay £65 per month for broadband, phone line, sports and cable. I still probably watch more Netflix than anything on cable. At moment cable has essentials like news, weather but once that goes OTT what use is cable to me.
No one, I repeat no one wants to see cinematic viewings die. However, it is time to wake up as now filmmakers have a choice to release on theatre or OTT or both. Clearly the biggest bidder wins here. This could work for cinemas. As competition, healthy competition if done right (like supermarket price wars) can drive prices down. The question is whether your Akshay Kumar or Salman willing to take a paycheck hit for the greater good of cinema?
“You don’t understand the practical aspects of cinema vs OTT to have a sane rational debate without throwing your toys out of a pram.” ~ clear case of pot calling the kettle black, especially now since Laxmii and Gulaabo have bombed on OTT. My points are specific to the Indian market and I’m not informed enough to comment on what’s the state of affairs in US or UK. 30M footfalls have always been a coveted number for a Hindi film since 50 years and will continue to remain so in days to come. Kindly go back to comments & tweets by OTT jingoists from this April/May and put it in context. Even I’m not against Netflix thriving for small scale films and series. But the nonsense propagated by certain elements like Shekhar Kapoor, RGV & Naser Shah deserved to have been condemned by “true cinema lovers” at the time (which it wasn’t). Even the likes of Nahta & Taran stayed mum (and continue to do so while Bollywood producers shamelessly continue postponing their release even as Warner Bros takes gamble after gamble).
Bad films will always do bad irrespective of platform. India’s market is not growing. Fact.
The issue something like 1 screen per 100k people whereas America is around 14, China 2.5 and European countries all above 3. GST has helped India stabilise admissions I guess.
I just think everything post Ghajini has turned into a race and the cost needs to stop growing.
To catch up, theatre expansion will inevitably mean higher prices.
OTT is only in the game for few months and it can’t be judged on a few releases.
In fact i remember some disgruntled film makers like Shekher Kapoor tweeting about how cinemas would stay shut till next year end and the usual suspect Naseer “saab” commenting on how C grade pukeworthy junk like Mirzapur, Paataal Lok & Sacred Games would be the preferred option of entertainment for the “mass audiences”. I’m sure if we get the numbers, even rejected films like Laxmii and Race 3 have higher OTT viewership than these rubbish web series that are basically refined versions of sexually explicit, gory pornographic content.
Seeing the advance booking of #tenet in multiplexes , it will be safe to say that any big film would have reinvigorated the boxoffice this Christmas. Still we have time , ponder upon this Bollywood !!!
The trade analysts seem very enthusiastic for Tenet, if the 4 Cr 1st day figure is true, we can say there hasn’t been much of a dent in cinema viewing habits, especially even during a pandemic.
I think the dent is that India’s top producers are proving to be how to put it, less ballsy here. Why such fear? If cinemas are open and safe I think Indian films should be releasing. It’s actually free positive publicity for any top star to be the star that restarted post pandemic theatrical business.
Exactly my point. Bollywood producers are a self centric shameless lot who do not understand the importance of cinematic exhibition. If a film like Tenet opens to 5 cr on a non holiday with 50% capacity, exhibitors going forward should give the finger to Bollywood films & shift focus to tentpole Hollywood releases, especially in the metros.
“Delay if you can” is the mantra of business world wide.
Targeting Bollywood is the new fashion by few on social media. Most don’t watch movies in theatres and are usually fans of stars like Aamir, Hrithik, etc who anyway work less.
Bollywood stars are a bunch of extremists when it comes to working mode. Akshay will do 5 films a year while Aamir will do one in 3 years. Fans are idiots to endorse either. The most sorry state is of hritik fans who had to wait 13 years for a true blockbuster in War after Dhoom 2.
LOL
Salman is most moderate and balanced in his working speed. He does crap but ensures he doesnt do too much or too less of it. One or two films a year since Wanted had also worked well for him.
1. War is not a true BB of KNPH or D2 proportions. Its more of a Super Hit in range of the Krish films.
2. Akshay has never had a real BB all his career. Mohra & RR are Super Hits.
3. None of these so called stars give 2 hoots about their stupid fans who fight on twitter & FB like smitten school boys.
Stars may not care about fan fights, but they will take as many blockbusters as they can get. War was a blockbuster. Krrish was a blockbuster. Just like D2 was a blockbuster.
Only Krrish 3 was just a superhit, unless one believes those inflated Roshan numbers. Anyways it was a painfully long wait of 13 years for hritik fans.
Aamir also had a long gap between RH and Ghajini when it comes to blockbusters. However, he delivered films like Sarfarosh, Lagaan, RDB, DCH, TZP in between. Whereas hritik was submerged with mediocrity in the long years between D2 and War.
Even @175 cr nett in 2013 K3 in the post GST paradigm has inflation adjusted collections at par with War. None of them stand a chance against adjusted numbers of KNPH or even D2 which are the 2 real BBs in HRs filmography. KMG, Krrish, Krrish 3 & War are Super Hits in my books. At par with Akshay’s biggest in Mohra & RR.
Apne! LOL. I think I got excited about writing my first review on NG and I was praising it. Even munna applauded my review.
YPD was quite fun as I recall.
OMG you found it! Do you have a link for when Rohit got a call from IndiaFM to take it down post?
This was my funniest moment on NG ever! To mimic Taran Adarsh’s reviews, fool the internet and Rohit to get a call to take down my fake review that seemed so similar to TA writing style.
Tango was Abid right ? and was a film journalist ?
Very decent guy.
Beld was a a laugh riot !!
Aside: If Satyam is reading this then please change the side bar from Shashi to Rishi !! arsa ho gaya boltey boltey !
We should be glad that Dharamendra is making a movie at 85 yrs old instead of trolling it. It may not do well but at least it gave enough reason for Dharamendra to keep his health well to shoot this movie. Good luck paaji!
I agree Master, and it’s not like he is making outright silly stuff like Dev Anand did.
I just hope i’m able to wash my own sh!t when i’m at dhermendras age. It’s actually surprising how healthy dharam has been considering his drinking habit but he must have very active life style and probably watches his calories intakes. Out side of someone like jeetendra, amitabh (who started watching his diet very carefully after letting it go in 90s), most old actors didn’t take care of themselves.
His health is commendable and may God give him a long life; hardly his acting.
According to Ramesh Sippy in an interview; Dharmendra was drunk in the BASANTI IN KUTTON KE SAAMNE MAT NAACHNA scene and the following action scene so-much-so he accidentally almost shot Amitabh in that scene.
[Ramesh later recanted but everyone on the sets new his affair with sharaab and shabab [Hema]].
It is very important to take care of your body after 40. Better if you start sooner. I waited until 50 and few stuff caught up. I was active so was able to manage it without taking meds for diabetes, cholestrol, gout issues, etc…
But just a quick public announcement, especially for the young guns here, don’t think it can’t happen to you. Body is like a car. you have to keep changing the oil, do the tune ups, change the filter and other required maintenances to keep it running smoothly.
Respect your body and take care of it. Getting old is not easy. And you want to have a quality old age, not be in bed.
Of course, sometimes no matter how much we take care, God has other ideas but on average we’ll do better if we take care of our body.

was listening to an old Danny Interview recently and he mentioned that first AB was supposed to play the husband character in Dhund, then he had a hit so the role went to Shatru . BR fired Shatru for coming late so finally it went to Danny .
will try and post the link to that interview .
but I believe sab kismat ka khel hai !!
That’s so lame, An Jo. It was viral picture on twitter and I just posted a joke, that too regarding movies! You are reacting as if he Akki is sharing your information to Yogi, taking it personal!
Master, I was joking about your joke. Who said I took it very seriously? Firstly, I didn’t even know about the news that Yogi was in Bombay trying to move the industry to UP and all.
Nothing personal and I was actually reacting to Munna and Marcus’s statements. Even Munna said jovially fishing for comments!!!
It is pretty clear the constant veiled attacks on Akshay is mainly due to his allegiance to BJP. There is hardly any doubt about that. You know it and I know it as well as everyone.
It is just a 2 way street that’s all; so didn’t mean any personal offence…
I won’t be shocked if there’s a mini bollywood in UP with likes of akshay, devgan, kangana working mainly out of UP. Devgan may not since he is alligned somewhat with shiv sena.
In US, big studios are in California but there are few mini shooting hubs thru out USA.
Its KGFs director. KGF itself was a run of the mill crass masala substandard version of Deewaar & Kala Patthar with a decent cinematographer in my opinion.
Akshay’s got Sooryavanshi, which may not be as big as the YRF deal, but comes first so one can claim moral superiority in these matters. It’d be a different matter if it underperforms (which, after looking at the writers’ team, I have a queasy feeling it will), but then any which way, the sun will never set on the Akshay Empire, God bless the Khiladi.
If YRF makes the Avengers Spy film (provided Pathan and Tiger 3 both works at the box office), then I am sure Shetty will also make a cop team-up film with Devgn, Ranveer and Akshay around the same time. But this YRF team-up film can make a lot more moolah at the box office.
Sooryavanshi will be a 100+ cr small hit in post covid times imo.
Spy universe will be bigger than cop universe always. The scope can be unlimited and mostly international. Cops will be in India and sometimes can go international!
Blatant fraudulent opportunism from the producers. Putting a dozen demands in the middle of a crisis reeks of selfishness. Begs to be asked why they didn’t come forward with these in Dec 2019?
Me versus tukde gang on twitter every day #सब_पर_भारी_कंगना Ha ha thank you for the trend my friends, it’s disheartening to see so many anti national elements here but I am proud of my nationalist friends who oppose tukde gang and want Akhand Bharat #सब_पर_भारी_कंगनाhttps://t.co/BeLKw1Nh36
And Kangana Ranaut ruined the reputation, mental stability and happiness of poor Hrithik Roshan. Can’t even begin to think about what his poor children must have faced because of this loser classless bitch who, unlike normal and loved movie stars who travel all around the world and often get photographed with 1000s of people (some of whom are wrong elements), has to hallucinate a relationship with a man containing some love.
Oh wow, apart from my shock that someone is supporting Kangana, just read the article properly:
Responding to this, Kangana accused Diljit of sucking up to people for work and drew comparisons between him and her. She stated that she is willing to apologise if anybody proves her wrong. Her response read “Oh chamche chal, tu jinki chat chat ke kaam leta hai, main unki roz bajati hoon, jayada mat uchal, main Kangana Ranaut hoon tere jaisi chamchi nahin jo jhoot boloon, maine sirf aur sirf Shaheen Baag wali protestor pe comment kiya tha, if anyone can prove otherwise I will apologise.”
Diljit did not keep mum either and counter attacked saying, “Tuneh Jitne Logon Ke Saath Film Ki Tu Un Sab Ki Paaltu Hai…? Fer To List Lambi Ho Jaegi Maalko Ki..? Eh Bollywood Wale Ni PUNJAB Wale aa .. Hikk Te Vajj Sadey Jhooth bol kar logo ko badhkana aur emotions se khailna woh toh aap achey se janti ho.” In his next tweet, Diljit challenged Kangana to get into an argument with him.
Not class, just language Kangana regularly uses online. If I lose respect of an individual, I tend to reply in kind. And there are plenty of examples of Kangana’s toxic behavior and responses online to delve into.
That was a typo, I meant to say deluded, narcissistic loser classless whiny bitch.
“tukde gang”, “j1had”, “kashmir”, etc… don’t get fooled Aman, real intention is something else…
I agree with you on kangana. I have said many times here, she is nothing more than a loser who will use a dead person for her gains.
She is not in news because she is doing some great work on OTT or doing some good social work to help out poor in India, she is in news by talking sh!t about people.
So that’s her life and life of her fans currently, they have to talk sh!t about others in order to make their lowlife feel of any value.
Why doesn’t she take up social work for Akhand Bharat???
Whatever it may be, it is an internal matter of Bharat , the protests are mainly political and by misguided farmers. There are more than few pro Khalistan supporters who have jumped in though . However will let not let Pakistanis khand the akhand Bharat. Period!!!!!
"Sikhs are not Hindus" – says a Nadim Ahmad whose first role model Jahangir tortured and murdered Guru Arjan Dev for putting Hindu Tilak on forehead of a Muslim
And second role model Aurangzeb beheaded Guru Tegh Bahadur for defending Kashmiri Pandits
Saw this twitter trend today.
Disgusting Trend by Opposition party, supported by several anti government groups. No matter what your affiliation this is gutterish and makes Kangana sensical despite her unnecessary tweets on sensitive issues.
Oh please, if this is disgusting, what about the regular language and insults Kangoli use on everyone? What about Kangana insulting an awarded IPS officer, by calling her side effect of reservation, unworthy, undeserving and frustrated out of incompetence?
And what is it with every pro Kangana trend being the reaction of true people and anti Kangana trend being a move by opposition parties and supported by anti government groups? What gives you the right to claim anyone as anti national? And no reply by anyone on this fool saying something as disgusting as chaat chaat ke naam lena to Diljit.
Reference to Kangoli and her ilk, not you. Funny that you don’t have a response to just one of the many instances Kangu foamed out gutter trash from her reprehensible mind, yet twitter trends are disgusting.
Ah, but only the Thackerays demolished her house. Hrithik rightfully put a case on her (might have been better if he paid her off, like Akshay paid off Aditi Rao, huh?) and Diljit responded in kind. And what about the Dadi, who this Padma Sree called a 100 Rs woman? Didn’t she feel very offended when Sanjay Raut called her haramkhor? How can you equate the Thackerays, Hrithik and Diljeet?
Kangana defenders rn are much worse than fans of a certain star, celebrating his release from a case in which he was clearly guilty. Those fans are just as unapologetic as that star and Kangu defenders are just as delusional as her. I’m done with arguing about this worthless troll and her defenders.
The defence of Kangana is beyond belief or even rationality. It’s come to the point where if one has supported her till now they feel the need to defend her till end no matter how silly she gets.
Defense for her stems from the ghatiya and offensive attack on her.
For every poor moves by her, the reaction has been worse, whether from Hrithik, Shiv Sena or now this one.
Nah. A rational person calls both wrong and doesn’t defend one wrong over the other. Kangana is crazy/ill whatever and it’s silly to defend her tweets that attack others. Also there is no defense of her property being demolished. Both wrong.
It was right to call out nepotism but wrong to brandish anything and everyone with same brush.
People are responding to her in the language she speaks.
Re.-The defence of Kangana is beyond belief or even rationality
Yeah, a lone women taking on the bigwigs of Bollywood and of the Sonia Sena is silly, I mean really!! Golf claps !
# Kuchbhee # Canadian Akhshay # Silly Kangana # Tum aurat ho, tum aisee zubaan mat bolo but others can call her all sorts of names .
My support to whether to Kangana or to BJP or to Modi is always issue based.
There are many instances ( like Hritik case) where I think she was wrong and I have never supported her, I don’t even care about nepotism tbh. Nepotism is everywhere and everyone given a chance will promote their kids.
But Palghar saduhs, CAA , Kjo saying leave the industry, her house being demolished .
what is wrong there in defending?
I don’t know about palghar, CAA – not involved in politics
On KJo telling her to leave industry if she is sick of it – he can say it and she is perfectly fine to respond in same language
On her house being demolished I agree it is absolutely wrong
But she’s always ranting about something. Is there no volume down button?
She is not civil in her responses
She is hardly a role model anymore
She is alienating the hand that has fed her (the industry)
There is no self control at all for like half a year
Have a bit of a rest and relax a bit Kangana
Most importantly not every battle needs to be a war
Just like Akhshay , the problem with her that the Mombatti brigade/ TTG have is her sympathy for Hinduism and closeness to Modi .
Wahee phatee hai inn so called liberals kee .
Broadly I agree that success seems to have gotten her in a wrong way,
But the kind of struggle she has had ( see the video of Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Kjo ganging up and making fun of her ) why because she can not speak propah english, she is an outsider ?
She must be really bitter to have faced all that and that bitterness is coming out .
Khapshyap was bitter and he has used much worse language than Kangana , but- 1. he is a man, and 2. he merged into the system so now he is all kosher.
She is successful no doubt. But bit by bit she is hitting self destruction mode. It is not even about religion or politics – or shouldn’t be at all. It’s just her attitude on Twitter is too much. She could be something way more than this.
I don’t believe in this damsel in distress angle. She is behaving more like what she hates. An entitled Princess.
The real problem with Kangana fans is that most seem more into her Tweet politics than her performances. It’s impossible to have political debates these days with liberandu, sanghi and what not being freely flung around these days, and that level of vitriol comes into debates about her.
I remember in January, there was a friend who went into a hate overdrive against Chhapaak and was super delighted when it flopped, claiming some silent majority had spoken and what not, when it was simply that the movie lacked buzz and was way too dark. When Panga came out, he spammed reviews and ratings, it became a bigger flop and he suddenly went into a diatribe about patriotism when I asked if the majority spoke again.
Check some of the members movie reviews here, they will trash the movie as soon as it doesn’t align with their political/religious views.
One member in particular is here just to stir up the pot politically/religiously.
On Kanga, I’ve said it many times, she is nothing more than a person who will use somebodys death for their personal gain.
If she is so concerned with “BHARAT”, spend your time on social cause. There’s plenty of things you can do (Sonu Sood).
She kept on thrashing sena, well, they responded in their thug style.
She is making a living by talking crap about people, well she can get away when doing it about hrithik.
If you do same to Shiv sena or RSS or groups like that, expect them to respond in same language or worse.

This is going to surprise us all the way Raanjhana and Tanu Weds Manu did. Eagerly awaiting yet another genre from the most versatile one man industry Akshay Kumar.
Boi is now saying that tenet day one wont even be 2 cr. It will be lucky to do 20 cr total. Had Laxmii released in theaters on diwali, it wont even have done 50 cr. Welcome to reality.
Indian village schoolteacher wins $1 million global prize — and gives half to the runners-up
Rather than keeping all his winnings, Disale told Fry in an interview that he would share the prize with the other nine finalists, giving them $55,000 each — the first time anyone has done so in the award’s six-year history.
He told Fry: “I believe that if I share this prize money with nine teachers it means I can scale up their work. Their incredible work is still worthy… If I share the prize money with the rest of the teachers they will get a chance to continue their work… and we can reach out and lighten the lives of as many students as we can.”
His actions drew praise from around the world, including from the Dalai Lama

Laxmii Reiterates Box Office As Only Judge

Only point i don’t like in BOI writeup is about equating housefull4 to laxmii. they’re not both same type of films. housefull had multistars, sequal, couple mass songs, big budget going for it.
laxmii looks and feels like made for TV movie.

BOI write up from last week said 900k new users ON DAY OFF Laxmii release. Something like that and I don’t know where they could attain that figure from anyway.

oh, i thought it was from some financial institution.
Well, i’m not going to say BOI is lying but Disney/Hotstar would have came out with big announcement if you can prove that you added about million new subscriber ON DAY OFF…
Disney+Hotstar has about 18.5 million subscriber

Are we going to judge all OTT release based on WoM or what our coterie say?
This is exactly what BOI has tried to reason. They are usually right with massy cinemas.
They have of course took the worst case scenario of 150 cr nett for Laxmii in non covid scenario. Best case noone would know.

How are the data points collected?

There is friendly banter; he takes some jabs and gives some back; all in good humor. There are many comments with Canada in reference and they are deleted immediately because they are not adding to discussion and they are more like flame throwing than opinion.

I posted just 1 article link. I don’t even care if it’s doing well or not but more into.. how the treatment won’t resonate after a decade of original and that appear to be true with many not liking the movie. It is more about content/treatment than fake news about records being broken by Disney CEO.

Shouldn’t they ask these questions to government?
SRK/Ajay/Salman/Akshay/Aamir don’t have any say in closing of theaters or shutting down of the city/state.
I don’t think Rohit/Akshay/Salman/Producers are happy sitting on a finished product which is ready to release. This is money sitting idle.

I think most theatres are open in India. The exhibitors are expecting some big A star film at least by Christmas to get them out of doldrums. They need as much money as they can in Nov-Dec since come Jan, situation is bound to worsen in most of the country. One can understand their frustration.

I assume it’s open at limited capacity?

If it’s 50% than i think that’s great.
No reason why not to release.

“But I expect a strong comeback in 2021.”
The new year is still some way off.

Don’t know if the looks part is true…

My top 5 cinematic experience with SRK

Aman/Tony, agree with both of you.
Same with Chennai Express versus Dilwale.

But by November 2021, things might be back to what used to be. Unless, God help us.

Jojo Rabbit

Views on Tenet:
Rating: 4.5/5 (Brilliant)

The distinguished authors Cathy Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy are well-respected names in South Asia with remarkable books like Deception: Pakistan, the United States and the Global Nuclear Weapons Conspiracy to their credit.
https://www.rediff.com/news/slide-show/slide-show-1-exclusive-interview-2611-why-america-sacrificed-mumbai/20131111.htm

Yes.

RRR is my most awaited. I am looking for a great emotional revenge saga, the hall mark of all Rajamouli’s films. None had gimmicks so far.

Sad but can’t blame the corporates for doing it.

I’m sure if we get the numbers, even rejected films like Laxmii and Race 3 have higher OTT viewership than these rubbish web series that are basically refined versions of sexually explicit, gory pornographic content.

Even Jeetendra is very disciplined health-wise.
I think the older actor, though hardly the gym-first acting-second guys, did maintain discipline after 60…

Sooryavanshi will be a 100+ cr small hit in post covid times imo.

Who exactly said chaat, chaat ke naam lena here?

That was a typo, I meant to say deluded, narcissistic loser classless whiny bitch.

And what is it with every pro Kangana trend being the reaction of true people and anti Kangana trend being a move by opposition parties and supported by anti government groups? What gives you the right to claim anyone as anti national? And no reply by anyone on this fool saying something as disgusting as chaat chaat ke naam lena to Diljit.

Defense for her stems from the ghatiya and offensive attack on her.
For every poor moves by her, the reaction has been worse, whether from Hrithik, Shiv Sena or now this one.
It just makes her look right despite being wrong.

I had mentioned it few times.
Everything is now political and religious.
