The original film was quite good. I found it quite intriguing the way they developed the theme of the good vs bad subjectively in perception initially, into a thin, blurred line when it becomes hard to demarcate one from the other in the end.
Madhavan was very good, but Vijay Sethupathi absolutely rocked in his portrayal of Vedha.
HR is looking good here. Glad too see doing films that masses may like. Fighter and Vikram Vedha look projects with good prospects.
Yet another southern remake. After Arjun Reddy the previous year, a dubbed film, Pushpa, end of last year, in 2022 with RRR, Jersey, KGF2 and Vikram Vedha, like it or not, there will be a heavy southern influence around this year as well.
Of course there have been some successful Bollywood remakes down there, the latest success story being Pink.
I am sure you have more info on the following projects but are the likes of Bachan Pandey, Cinderella or Driving License southern films remakes? I think I read about them being so when these were announced.
There are almost 40+ remakes in Bollywood from South in different stages of making. I remember Mankad having a list and some of the films chosen were amusing.
Akshay’s Cindrella is remake of highest imdb rated (8.8) movie of South India.
Bachchan Pandey is not but would have south indian masala in second half.
But none of major stars are doing south remakes now.
They missed a chance here IMO. Should have gone for a Telugu star as Vikram as Vikram Vedha is not known in the Telugu States, what opening power does Saif have exactly? At least they should try for this, a bilingual of sorts.
Been ages..hope all are well and staying safe out here.
Spent a few hours in a rabbit hole in Youtube, reading comments in Russian for Bobby, Disco Dancer, etc.. and translating them using google translate. I just had to express my thoughts here.
Its amazing how Bwood of a bygone era (ie 50s-80s) influenced the lives of people in the USSR. Had read about this craze previously, but these comments on youtube truely bring it to life.
take a sampling of this from a video of Mithun in Tblisi:
“В Индии нет больше достоинств, кроме как то, что у них есть Митхун. Это звезда первой величины. Ему не было равных. Нет. И не будет. Обожаю тебя мой кумир мой любимый.
India has no more merit except that they have Mithun. This is a star of the first magnitude. He had no equal. No. And it won’t. I adore you, my idol, my beloved.”
Continuing.. the humongous influence of Mithun on the entire 80s gen of erstwhile USSR is incredulous. So many performances on their live talent shows from him. eg:
Apparently, Disco Dancer was the biggest hit ever when it released in the USSR (perhaps even bigger than what Dangal did in China). DD was also a huge hit pan-Africa, Far-East etc. Its worldwide gross wouldve placed it at #1 over any other Indian film ever released. However, the usual BO shenanigans of the day never really elevated Mithun to the credit deserved. It doesn’t matter anyhow, coz his legacy lives on even in 2022, through such comments:
“Вспоминается тот деревенский кино театр с переполненным залом , где естественно месть не было сидя в деревянном полу с аудитории более чем 1500 тысячи человек смотрели в первые этот шедевр . Я готов через огон и воду пройти , лишь бы вернут те времена . Конец 80-тых годов
I recall that village cinema theater with a crowded hall, where naturally there was no revenge sitting in a wooden floor with an audience of more than 1,500 thousand people watching this masterpiece for the first time. I am ready to go through fire and water, if only those times will return. End of the 80s”
“Помню это теплое время. Все были дружные, добрые,веселые. На индийских фильмах мы росли и стали людьми. Я счастлив, что жил в это время!!!!
I remember this warm time. All were friendly, kind, cheerful. In Indian films, we grew up and became human. I am happy that I lived at this time !!!!”
Mithun is also hugely popular in the Caribbean and Guyana. The whole Disco-Bappi Lahari music deal made him an icon, and the fact that he’s found some occasionally good films and classics to work in, like Gunda, will keep him relevant
At the end of 80s and early 90s I had read in several quarters that Disco Dancer was extremely popular in Russia. It was also widely reported that ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ was a rage in Japan.
A few years back I was watching one of the popular french tv shows and the opening music was a remade version of ‘come closer’ from Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki.
I think during the making of Lucky, Salman referred to Mithun’s popularity in Russia a few times.
Yes, the fact that Bollywood transcended borders dates from decades back.
I have also lived those years in 80s as a kid when at a certain point of time Mithun was an icon for the youths, more than anyone.
A bit like Hrithik Roshan was for a spell when he was the best dance dancer around and best at stunts. Mithun was the best dancer in Bollywood for quite a while and he was doing films like Boxer and Karate and these kind if things were a rage among youths back then. Could see most youths around aping him, dressing up.like him, dancing like him.on the streets or at weddings.
Both Disco Dancer and Dance Dance had recorded over 60 million footfalls in USSR making Mithun the most popular Indian actor in Soviet since Raj Kapoor.
Perhaps its coz of the Russian language comment inserts.
Anyhow, before I step down from my soapbox, for the sake of true Mithunda trivia, and to open a window into that era, I’ll only post the English translations of such heartfelt Russian comments posted for videos of DD:
At one time, I was AWOL 60 km in a truck in the back in winter to watch this film and go back to the evening check !!! It was in March 1984 ..
This is all our youth, which you will never return !!! Man is a legend
I was 10 years old when I watched this film now, I’m 47, and I watch, and I love, the most interesting film in the entire industry of Indian cinema, thank you for such a masterpiece
From the first seconds of this song you are carried away to childhood !!!! I listened a million times, I know every note, every word, I sing with them and cry … Nothing can be returned … The song is surprisingly melodic and beautiful.
One of the best artists in the history of all cinema!
You listen and understand ….. that you, this masterpiece, were taught to listen by your parents, who, unfortunately, are no longer alive, and you are watching and there are tears in your eyes ….. THANKS FOR THE GREAT FILMS !!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Indians have a beautiful soul, since such films were shot that many generations of councils grew up on them, for me Mithun is cooler than all the Vandams and Rimbaud combined, and what songs … the soul flies and my eyes are watery from nostalgia, everyone is good
I remember this warm time. All were friendly, kind, cheerful. In Indian films, we grew up and became human. I am happy that I lived at this time !!!!
An interesting fact is that Mandarin and Russian dubbed versions of a lot of Hindi films (including Sholay) have found a huge market in USSR and China (as huge as 50 million plus footfalls). And we’re all witnessing the response to the dubbed versions of Bahubali, Pushpa, Secret Superstar and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I guess English dubbing of major Indian commercial films might be the way forward in order to penetrate the North American and UK markets in a major way going forward.
North America sensibilities don’t match with Indian sensibilities (precisely same reason why US attempt at imposing democracy in some of the countries doesn’t work)…Indian movies work wherever there is a match. There are exception here and there but you can figure reason; crouching tiger hidden dragon or my big fat greek wedding.
Apparently the most watched Indian movie in the world thus far is Caravan which sold over 300 million tickets globally, almost twice the number of Sholay.
I genuinely feel Bollywood cant make a masala film like #KGF or #Pushpa .. We dont have such writers & directors to pull this through.. Infact South makers are inspired from 70’s & 80’s hindi films and giving our heartland audience what they want.. Its not our cup of tea now.
One thing i want to add. Nowadays Southern stars look more suited for Masala roles then Mumbaiya heroes. Southern stars with thier Fatty look and Dark Dark complexion look more meancing. (No racist intention behind saying Dark complexion)
Underwhelming trailer. Hrithik seems to be continuing his exceptionally good Super 30 act but this won’t work here due to lack of novelty and this being a frame to frame remake. This isn’t a good time for remakes anyway.
What a teaser! ‘Vikram Vedha’ is gonna open big if the teaser is anything to go by. Take a bow all producers of the film, Pushkar-Gayatri director duo, @iHrithik , Saif Ali Khan and entire team. I’ve seen this kind of goosebumps-inducing teaser after a long time. pic.twitter.com/qCCgh4PG2F
Nahta seems to be impressed but I doubt he’d get it right this time. This might’ve worked back in 2018 but 2022 isn’t a good era for xerox copies of originals. HRs Bihari accent lacks novelty as well.
Vijay Sethupathi rocked in VV. This seems like another copy and paste job (even with HR’s look which is similar to Sethupathi’s in the original) and it may work for the masala elements. HR is looking alright in the teaser, even if Vijay Sethupathi is a tough act to follow.
I think Madhavan was good in the original, but Saif does not seem up to much and seems merely functional in the teaser. For a film on good vs bad to work, both elements have to be prominent enough and well-written. If one part is weak, it undermines the counter-part and thus the whole film. It means anyone winning one part of the cat and mouse game, is beating a competent rival, not some lame donkey. A bit like in D3, where once they undermine the role of the good cop, you undermine the villain and the whole film as the thriller element gets diluted.
I have already watched the original, so I will skip this one. But it has potential to do very well.
This would have worked very well had it been original. But being a frame to frame remake (I assume a lot of folks have watched the original for free on youtube) has dented its chances. Bollywood still seems not to learn as Ajay is set to remake Kaithi and Drishyam 2 next.
Hritik is a bonafide superstar. The orginal content is very strong. Pushkar Gayatri never disappoints (Suzhal was very good last month too). i think this will open big
HR rocks here; and how! He is terrific in the teaser. SAK, repeating the same act that he has done for decades, is plain bad.
Not interested in watching at all, what with having a seen fantastic performance from Madhavan followed by Sethupathi. And of course, the fact that 80% of the film had been attempted before in AKS; But in July 2000, this was a damn good film and Bachchan, at 58, coinciding with KBC, belted out one class of a performance.
I don’t mind watching in the theater as well; but the teaser showed, or at least what I felt, was that it’s a xerox copy of the original, which I hope it is not. That’s the only thing that worries me. But if Gayatri-Pushkar turn out a different milieu, that would be great.
As for HR, all that infamous shivering and flaring has thankfully taken a backseat. He was effective enough in films like KNPH, Mission Kashmir, Lakshya etc. before he started giving 200% in scenes which required only a 20% effort (in Rangan’s words). But since Super 30 (and to an extent Kaabil before that despite being an obnoxious film) he seems to have done a lot of introspection. Even in his masala-verse, War was a far superior performance to Bang Bang and Dhoom 2. Hopefully Vedha’s another feather in his cap after his last 2.
Aks was a tremendous film, ahead of its time, still is ahead of today’s time in the Indian film industry. Bachan, Sir, and Manoj Bajpayee were awesome. One of Raveena’s career best performance. A must watch.
This is a poor teaser. Not only is it a frame to frame copy of the original after 5 years of work by the makers, its a downgrade in every way inspite of such a bloated budget.
A major issue is Hrithik’s acting. I understand he is a poor actor, but does he have to overact in every frame? Making weird OTT faces with bulging eyes does not mean maniacal expressions, can someone please tell that to this dumbo? But then this guy is as superficial as it comes when its ‘acting’. And he has to follow up Vijay Sethupathy’s act here, poor fellow!
Saif is perhaps the best part of the trailer as he seems understated compared to Hrithik’s painful facial contortions. But not even a single dialogue from him in the teaser? The original’s trailer was more balanced.
Bollywood by large is desperate for a hit, so some praise is coming its way. But unfortunately, this will not be a savior. Bollywood will have to wait longer. Maybe Ram Setu or Cirkus will do the trick.
Already have more than once.. I’m happy to be in company of the likes of AnJo, Krish and Rangan who understand commercial Indian cinema much better than pretentious Hollywood fan kids with no understanding of masala.
Vikram Veda trailer has become no 1 trending video in YouTube India. Everyone going gaga about Hrithik looks , dialogue delivery and actions. It will be hattrick of hits for Hrithik following Super 30, War. The Craze is Huge for VV in India.
Saif should be appreciated playing 2nd fiddle in this movie, knowing very well whenever any actor acted along with Hrithik. Always limelight and appreciation was taken by Hrithik and other actor just converted into side role.
Underwhelming trailer, teaser was better. For anyone who has seen the original, this scene by scene pointless remake is a yawn fest. Specially with two inadequate leads – one too earnest and the other an overacting one. Bad replacements for the class acts of Madahavan and Sethupathy from the original. What can one say, acting is definitely not everyone’s strong point.
**Edited** Unlike a small scale niche thriller, an outright mass commercial entertainer cannot afford to have ordinary looking overweight character artists with rickshaw puller looks to play the lead. Anyhow the box office opening of Vikram Vedha will speak for itself like it’s always done for the bonafide superstars of our industry.
Action scenes are outstanding and so are the thrilling elements. Hrithik is a beast and Saif's swag, too, is next level! #VikramVedhaTrailer is a Blockbuster! https://t.co/qcR6b3sCbU
I like the teaser better than the trailor. They could have cut the trailor better using the concept of Vikram vedham itself. It’s looking like a normal actioner rather than a content oriented movie. Another thing that’s a bit of turn off is the UP accent. But nevertheless this will work at the box office.
It is not UP accent. It is the same one in Super 30.
I loved how Hrithik is enjoying himself in Alcoholia song. This is first time i am seeing him in a masala song. He has never done this before in his life. He is now entering in free actinf zone…losing oneself to the character. Only Akshay and Salman did these freestyle songs.
Seems to be the equivalent to Tasakku Tasakku song from original. Not sure which gangster dances in such synchronization. They have probably said since there is a song lets make Hritik dance to it as he is a good dancer. The original is more in Kalu mama mould and hence more of a natural fit in the movie. Hope they dont go too much into glorifying the Vedha character as Madhavan could carve out a proper role for himself and make himself heard and seen in the movie inspite of sethupati at his best, am not sure Saif is talented enough to do that. The balance between the two characters should not be too tilted due to Hritik being a bigger star.
HR and the visuals of this song are great. But the audio is faltu. Vishal Dadlani needs to stop singing every song Vishal-Shekhar compose. Also I think they’ve lost their touch– the real banger from Vikram Vedha will be the remake of the title track from the original.
In general, Bollywood music is just so bad. On Friday, three songs released: Alcoholia (Vishal-Shekhar), Hicc (Amit Trivedi) from the new Big B movie, and the Manithe remake. Needless to say, the Manithe remake is the only one I have listened to more than once.
Bollywood has remade so many songs that they forgot how to make original songs. And as a result, these original songs will do poorly, so they’ll remake more songs..

Hrithik is playing Vedha here. Looks promising indeed.
Many bollywood movies are also remade which we dont know. Its a mutual society.
I dont know but i think unless voices of stars are dubbed like in Baahubali or Pushpa, the chances of a star from South India has a ceiling.

Observe the brilliant scene between Manoj and Bachchan. The ‘dance of death’ enacted by Bachchan, no freaking actor can even attempt that…

Retaining the background music of the original is a super decision

I was wondering whose voice is the voice over. This above reveals it is Vijay Raj.
I like the trailer .

Bollywood stars are heavily overpaid. That’s an open secret. Else every film’s budget would be down by at least 50%.

The song is average and Hrithik’s steps look same to what he has been doing these years. I don’t think this movie will work.
