  1. Filminformation flashback…

The success of Sarfarosh and Biwi No. 1 have boosted the morale of the film industry. Sarfarosh was perceived as a ‘city film’ and if it has managed to keep its distributors happy despite its ‘class’ appeal, it bodes well for the industry, especially because it proves again that films with novelty do have a market today even if they have a ‘class’ appeal. The success of Biwi No. 1 is exciting not just because distributors will earn handsomely in the film but also because it was released at a time that was considered suicidal. Yet, despite the World Cup cricket fever, the film not only opened to a bumper response but also held on well all through the first week and also in the second week.

  3. Border 2 is going to be huge. Looking at a potential blockbuster here. Border had a footfall of around 3.70cr, the third highest for an action film after Mard and Gadar over the last 40 years (BOI).

If Gadar did stupendously well, we can imagine how well Border 2, an all out war film, can do today. The songs, Hindustan Meri Jaan and Sandese Aate Hain are enough.

I do think from the successes of last year, Sunny Deol has benefitted the most. He was past it for the last 15 years or more. But, this has changed overnight with Gadar 2. At the age of 65-66, he is now the leading man of 4-5 big projects. I saw his line-up on a website yesterday and it is certainly, by far, one of the most strongest ones you can find today:

    Lahore 1947- Republic Day 2025

Mythri Films’ Next (makers of Pushpa)- An out and out action film. Shooting starts next week.

    Border 2- Republic Day 2026

Ramayana- Also a planned spin off on his character, Hanuman, here.

    Gadar 3- Independance Day 2026

Sunny Deol has by far benefitted the most from last year’s blockbusters. He looked past it for over 15 years, but at the age of 65-66, he arguably has one of the strongest line-ups now, as the leading man in 4 or 5 huge projects:

Lahore 1947- releasing on Republic Day 2025
Mythri Films’s Next (makers of Pushpa)- a pan-Indian high voltage action film.
Border 2- releasing on Republic day 2026.
Ramayana- with a touted spin-off on his Hanuman character in there.
        Gadar 3- Independance day 2026.

    • Stree 2 now releasing alongside KKM and Vedaa. Vikram’s film releasing in the South on the same day. I guess that Stree 2 will lead among the Hindi releases.

      • I was thinking the same. Stree 2 should easily win the 3 way race. I dont have much expectations from KKM or Vedaa anyways.

Btw, Sunny Deol’s line-up looks great, especially compared to where he was before Gadar 2 released.

  6. Munjya on it’s 8th day is giving strong competition to Chandu champion day 1.

Proves, Kathik is not that big of a star, his hits are due to the film, not him.

    my take on LSD 2:

Every portion of LSD 2 is an assault on the senses and unsettling. I can imagine Dibakar Banerjee, holding Tikatok devotees, followers-obsessed influencers, and junk TV by the scruff of the necks and shoving their faces down a trash bin, forcing them to consume the muck they lovingly indulge in the rest of the time. And giving them a film that they might misunderstand as crappy… but no different from the stuff they themselves condone as ‘acceptable’ in the world of today. The film is no more than a mere reflection of the current state of affairs.

And that for me is the most terrifying part of it. It isn’t merely a cautionary tale. It’s a reality that is present and unfolding right now, in the time we spend online, the videos we watch, the ads we skip, and the news we hog.

Like our thirty-second-long attention spans looking for instant gratification from multiple screens and sources, it’s a crazy ride on steroids, hopping from one screen and portion to the other, the focus shifting abruptly, and without warning, from the middle-of-the-scene action to reaction videos, from amateur public opinion to advertisers and sponsors to behind-the-scenes action to news channels, from social media channels trending the news to marketing gimmicks. It’s haphazard and chaotic, and flimsy and unreal.

This is probably the scariest movie I’ve seen all year. Like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a 2 hour film, and Dibakar experimenting with what more and different he could do from the rest of his filmography. One thing for sure: he doesn’t repeat himself and continues to shatter his viewers’ expectations at every step.

They say, pre-release promotion of a film is very important. And yet, Munjya, with not much promotion, is doing well at the box-office. Can you explain?

    – MUNJYA is an exception rather than the rule. The producers of the film did not have any star face to promote their film and hence decided to release it with less promotion, hoping that it would open well and they would then pump up the publicity if the audience gave the film their thumbs up. That’s exactly what happened. The content was so compelling that the film not only opened well but also picked up in the weekend. Incidentally, the ticket prices were brought down on the first day itself. That itself can be counted as great promotion for the film. By the way, horror films have inherent power to attract the public even with minimum promotion.

    • So Aamir is set for another Christmas release. The other news in circulation is that Welcome 3 has been postponed to next year. Ideal setting for Aamir to make a comeback (provided that social films can still induce paying public to visit the theaters in our age of OTT).

Munjya had done very well in second weekend and will be a Hit by end of this week. May reach Superhit status in coming weeks.

Whereas Chandu Champion is likely to be another flop of this year. A 130-140 cr film doing just 20+ cr in opening weekend is not encouraging.

      • Pushpa 2 has been postponed, with a December release now looking more likely. I hope this does result in a clash with SZP. Such clashes need to be averted especially when you look at the huge amount of flops in 2024.

        • I dont think Pushpa 2 will do any additional harm to SZP.

SZP’s target family audience in plexes may anyways prefer Hollywood’s Lion King sequel, which is also releasing on Christmas.

Lion King was a smash hit at Indian box office in 2019.

Woh ‘different target audience for different genre films hence they won’t eat into each other’s business” wala zamana is bygone and dusted. It’s dirty competition and is all about hogging maximum screen space and maximising your theatrical revenue. Yes films can still turn successful but not hope to rake up big numbers if released on the same day. Clashes have proved to be damaging to both films in the recent past. Salaar vs Dunki is a prime example.

        • Pushpa 2 coming on Dec 6. But still think Lion King II will give stiff competition and SZP wont be a big success like TZP was. Maybe a moderate one.

    • i remember Rajiv Rai, who was the master of action thrillers in the 90s, suddenly had the crazy idea of directing a rom-com. This practically ended his directorial career. He later even acknowledged that he was quite clueless about rom-coms and he should have stuck to action thrillers.

    Inside Out 2 review:

It is a good animation film with a great payoff at the end. Solid imagination of the writers who include a few more characters calling the shots, while the major emotions in the first part (joy, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust) end up being repressed and ousted from headquarters. The control of the now-teenaged Riley is in the hands of Anxiety, Envy, Embarrasment, and Boredom, allegorical to a girl just entering her teens and experiencing raging emotions and hitherto inexplainable feelings. She’s a mess and all over the place, and Anxiety believes being in control can guide her in the correct direction, not knowing it can lead to disaster.

While the film is still an enjoyable watch, the magic of the first film is missing, which was crazily inventive and one of the best animation films ever made. I think this has to do something with Pete Docter not calling the shots here. Who is one of the best directors, animation or otherwise, working today.

  18. So Munjya ended its second week run by crossing 70 cr. Can do 100 cr if Kalki fails. Even otherwise it should cross 90 cr lifetime. SUPERHIT

Chandu made a poor 35 cr in week 1 and I don’t expect it to sustain in week 2.

Srikanth crossed 50 cr and is ABOVE AVERAGE or COMMISSION EARNER.

    All eyes on Kalki now.
