Sachin and Federer meet at Wimbledon
thanks to Alex and Qalandar…
LINK
Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was in attendance at the All England Club to watch 6 time winner Roger Federer in action against David Nalbandian.Sachin was accompanied by wife Anjali for the match at Centre Court that was won by Federer in straight sets.
The legendary batsman even met the champion tennis player along with Anjali after Federer’s victory and the three dined together.
India’s Mahesh Bhupathi even tweeted about the meeting prior to Federer’s match. Maheshbhupathi: Roger Fed and @sachin_rt gonna meet today..heard it straight from the horses mouth here in the locker room.
Former Wimbledon champion and tennis great Martina Navratilova was spotted sitting close to Sachin and Anjali.

This is not just a “meeting”….
To me, it was much more…
Could not and will not be able to attend any wimbledon match this year, due to committments etc
But this “meeting” more than made up for it.
As I said, I’m not in2 quantity —
As mentioned in the othe threAd— just a few moments in “haal e dil” made the entire Buddha exercise worthwhile IMO.
While there Are certain entire careers and eras which r worthless and just pass by–eg from a Bollywood context, the entire Salman khan filmography pre dabang is inconsequential to me!!!
Sometimes a smll subtlety makes my day.
Like to learn a lot from these two guys ESP federer — names where the word “legend” gets into it’s own (¬ only for their “game”)
Cheers

i seriously think nadal will break his record( with age on his side and just 6 slam behind )
its more like sampras and agassi again
sampras won more but agassi was more a compleate player
like sampras fedex never won french but nadal won on grass, davis cup and olympic good
but ya ruthlessness and domination of sampras, fedex will never be matched

Not sure why you used the word Fedex, unless you think the first 'Fed' of Federer rhymes with Fedex.
Federer is pronounced as – fey(long)-the(short)-rer (as in 'ghar').

Still, I’m not able to relate to the two ‘Feds’, Federer being entirely different.

Jimmy Connors on Federer: “In an era of specialists, you’re either a clay court specialist, a grass court specialist, or a hard court specialist…or you’re Roger Federer.
Federer is surely past his prime now as far as tennis is concerened.
More than his tennis, am a big fan of his personality and attitude—which in some circles has already embarked on an identity of its own—the “roger federer” personality!!
btw few years ago –had lost total interest in tennis but this guy single handedly got me back in the courts

djokovic pushed nadal like never b4 &overpowered him …
Especially in the second set, it was beath taking the speed at which Djoko was moving—the fitness levels in mens tennis right now is simply awesome—he was making even nadal looking slow…
Goes to show—everyone has some1 waiting to upstage him/her
As for the female semifinalists–three of the four were east europeans–they are tall, blonde and loud!!!
On the circuit, are four tall blondes: Maria Sharapova of Russia, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Sabine Lisicki of Germany.

The mens game is interesting as clearly Rafa has the upper hand over Federer mentally and likewise now it seems Djokovic over Nadal for the moment. And I’d say Federer is a better match up against Djokovic. Federer is on the decline and his loss to Tsonga was one of shock. He has this year and next year max really, the Olympics will be ambitions for him and if he can add one major he’ll be content. At 29 he can still mix it with the best but whether he can string 3-4 performances together to win a slam is now a real question to be asked. Nadal on the other hand can probably think he has the ability and age to stage an onslaught on Federers total slam haul. Though with Djokovic’s purple patch, a spanner has been thrown in I guess. The guy I am hoping to see make an entry into the top group is Del Potro. He had a stinging forehand and service game against Nadal and after injuries he could be a real threat. Murray I think has mental issues in the crunch games. Mens game is really interesting now – Federer on his way out but 3-5 players like Tsonga, Nadal, Del Potro, Djokovic and Murray hit the ball really hard and good to watch.

Sampras won a grand slam at 32 no? In any case it was past his peak.
Nadal will def burn out, the pressure he puts on his body is immense. In that sense Federer is fine. Its more mental with Federer now. He will believe he is not good enough in important crunch match situations and its difficult to get out of that. Against Nadal he has little chance.

yes jayshah–agree with most of that…
will add–IMO
Federer (for all his gr8ness) is past his peak–the state of ruthless power/ stamina in the top of the mens tennis means that he can still hover around the top but will be surprised if hewins another slam.
Wont count del petro or tsonga or murray with nadal/djokovic…
Murray suffers from the deepseated british lack of killer instinct and “inabiility to come out of ones comfort factor”.
It s a problem with the priorities as well in britain.
Recently saw the still “young” freddie flintoff in a bbc channel roaming around and “exploring america” with the past the prime Gough!!
Found it significant not that djokovic and kvitva won—wasnt unexpected…there was seomthing ominous bout it.
Both Nadal and Sharapova were outclassed..
It was the way they won which was telling…
These two will win quite a few slams between them , provided they avoid injury (and a swollen head)….

A handshake that ‘nauseated’ Imran
Forced to shake hands with the Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan had feared “this adulterous moment” could have had serious repercussions on his political ambitions.
The incident, which took place in 2006, finds mention in Khan’s biography, Imran versus Imran — The Untold Story, authored by a young Indian writer, Frank Huzur.
Referring to a public function held in New Delhi, the book points out that the organisers invited Modi to share the stage with Khan, who was not aware that he would be in the same session as the Gujarat CM.
“When Imran saw Modi, a feeling of nausea hit him as he took his seat on the panel. It was overpowering and worsened when, to his dismay, he noticed Modi sprinting towards him,” states the book in the chapter titled — Beyond Borders.
“The Gujarat chief minister stood right in front of him, and Imran tried to look away, but Modi wasn’t deterred. He took Imran’s hands and shook them warmly….It was a difficult moment and gradually Imran became mute,” the author noted.
“It was only then Imran realised photographers had ganged up to capture the initial moment of smiles, guffaws and handshakes. He was shocked at the thought that he could be portrayed on the front pages of the Pakistani newspapers the next morning,” Huzur wrote.
Khan feared the images would lead to his political ambition hitting rock bottom.
But to Khan’s relief “there was no inkling of his meeting with Modi in the Pakistan press. The photographs, which captured his adulterous moment in India, had not travelled across the border to discredit him.”
In the chapter on Indian politics, Khan has praised the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister VP Singh.

Everyone knows just how much I loathe Modi but I wonder if Imran Khan feels similar nausea when he shakes hands with some of the butchers in his own country! I can understand the political issue here for him but the mentioning the nausea is gratuitous.

PS — this discourse of “nausea” is anyway problematic, because it personalizes the issue and demonizes one man — whereas the problem is of a certain mindset and a certain kind of politics. I feel no nausea when I look at Modi; the urgent need of opposing such politics cannot afford the privilege of squeamishness…

Easily the most charismatic/colourful cricketer from the subcontinent (at his peak). Have some sort of interest /liking for this sort of people
To add , perhaps he was the only one ever to beat the indisciplined bunch of a side into some semblance of sensible order (at one time) & also introduced this pace battery( beginning from the great Ws…)

I remember reading Gavaskar to the effect that Imran was the best pace bowler he’d ever faced (and he certainly had faced quite a few!). I think Imran’s 40 wickets in the 6-test series against India in Pakistan (1982-83 season), on some dead dead pitches, ranks as one of the most impressive fast bowling achievements ever. One can only imagine how much more he (or Kapil; but Imran was just better) would have done had half his tests been played in Australia, England or New Zealand, as was true of Lillee, Botham, and Hadlee. And to top it all, he averaged over 50 with the bat as captain! [Quite frankly, had it not been for Dickie Bird’s umpiring error in the 1987 World Cup semi-final, when he wrongly ruled Imran out at 57 (I think stumped), Imran might have led Pakistan to a World Cup triumph in 1987 itself – although he would then likely have retired earlier, and cricket fans would have missed out on the epic Pakistan-West Indies test series in 1988, surely one of the finest of that decade.]
