Sholay was one of the first Indian films that made use of several cinematic innovations at the time such as 70mm format and multi track stereophonic sound. Originally Sholay was filmed at a 4:3 aspect ratio but was released for the cinema in a matted 2.35:1 aspect ratio on 70mm film format. Also the film was shot with two different endings. Due to certain pressures from Indian film censors and media the director’s cut of the film remained behind closed doors for many years until it re-surfaced as an extended version. This version was re-cut by Ramesh Sippy and showed the original intended ending – which would act as a major spoiler for those not seen Sholay before, if I revealed it here! So hence two versions of Sholay exist; the original theatrical version, which runs for 188 minutes and the extended director’s cut which is 204 minutes long. And both are available on DVD.

The first release of Sholay on DVD was an effort by DEI/Eros, which used the wide screen 70mm version of the film. It was later released under the Eros/B4U tag, which was the director’s version of the film but also presented it as originally shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Video DEI/Eros

Of the two available DVDs the video on this version is better in terms of picture clarity and sharpness but its not all high-quality stuff. Presented at a zoomed 1.85:1 aspect ratio from the original 2.35:1 matted version of Sholay you can tell from the screen shots below exactly how much of the picture is missing compared to the full frame version of Sholay.

  3. Thanks for clarifing Satyam.

O.K.- I have the Eros (not B4You though) 204 minutes DVD.
it has Tatya Tope not james bond and I can see the guy on the steering wheel clearly as shown above, and it has the Director’s original ending with Sanjiv Kumar crying on Dharmendra’s Shoulders.
whooohoooo- I have the Good DVD !!

  5. So the lower pic is the from this DVD, right?

    • lower pic is the older one.. you can see how it’s cropped compared to the other one.. I actually never knew it was originally shot in 4:3. Seems astonishing for this sort of film.

  6. I’ve heard about this film before … been meaning to watch it, heard it was quite good

    • you might find it interesting.. many like it quite a bit..

    • Are you stamping on my foot without making me yell?!

Or are you serious?! If you’re then you have to stop doing your BO analyses. Not having watched ‘Sholay’ is your biggest deterrent to being a Bollywood BO analyst!

PS Sorry, may be the above is in jest but I had to say it!

      • Offside – Its true have not seen Sholay. Or for that matter any movies from late 80’s and before except for AAA and Deewaar. Now – can you shoot me?

        • I dunno how you have survived – whether it’s from the wrath of the purists of Bollywood or without having watched this particular film!

I can only stop the trigger if you steal / rent / borrow / beg / snatch / nick the dvd asa!

It’s an unpardonable, cardinal sin not to have watched Sholay and stay existing for as long as you have!

PS I have never been so harsh on anybody ever.

        • You will be even angry to hear…there is a VCD of Sholay in my house for the last 30 years

  7. Can you kick out anybody who hasn’t
