3 Idiots screened at the UN!

Aamir Khan starrer ‘3 Idiots’ is scaling new heights – the film had a special screening at the UN followed by a discussion on the film’s message concerning the education system. The superhit movie produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra was shown at the United Nations headquarters in New York, which was attended by director Rajkumar Hirani and screenwriter Abhijat Joshi.

“Abhijat and I were present there for the screening and the question and answer session,” said Hirani, adding that he felt “honoured” to present his movie to the UN.

“The Department of Management at the UN got in touch with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s office and requested a screening followed by a two-hour long post-film session with UN members who will focus on how the film has impacted their lives and how each character influences education system,” a source said.

However nobody at the United Nations had imagined such a huge turn-up when they sent out the invites. They expected only Indian expats. The screening was attended by some 700 people, but seating had been arranged for only 175. They had to move to another screen, but even that could house only 600 people.

“The movie was a revelation to the Americans present in the audience since their idea of a Bollywood cinema was just song and dance. The movie was able to change the idea of Bollywood movie in front of foreign audience,” the source added.

Released in December 2009, the film, which also stars Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan and Boman Irani, is the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time in India. It has also bagged six Filmfare awards.

  3. we are taking baby steps and by producing quality and relevant movies we will get the global audience. congrats to vinod, raju, abhijat and aamir for pioneering engaging and educative entertainments.

there is a lesson here for all of us, had chetan b not been greedy and asked for more (or been wiser in handling the whole fiasco) today he would have been able to get more exposure and a wider platform to air his views from.

Shanker to remake 3 idiots.. mahesh babu as wangdu??

The grapevine has it that both versions will have top leading men from Tollywood and Kollywood. One name that’s making the rounds is Mahesh Babu who is expected to do the role made memorable by Aamir Khan in the original.

    • It would be a mistake for Shankar to do this.. he’s already been burnt once with RDB before (Sainikudu). 3I isn’t his kind of scene. Plus anyone who knows any Hindi in Andhra has seen 3I already.

      • Sainikudu was a remake of RDB? This review makes it sound anything but that! http://www.nowrunning.com/movie/3529/telugu/sainikudu/review.htm

        • didn’t say it was a remake.. there are some thematic similarities though.. some of the reviewers even noted this at the time.

Satyam’s response: “It would be a mistake for Shankar to do this.. he’s already been burnt once with RDB before (Sainikudu).”

From the above two statements, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to conclude that you said Sainikudu was a remake of RDB.

But in any case, the fact that Gunasekhar was the director of Sainikudu makes me think that you might be thinking of a different film.

The only “thematic similarities” that I can see is that there’s a student and a politician who are antagonists. But the nature of the antagonism, their characterizations, and the plot itself are very, very different.

        • sm: the “he” who satyam is saying has been burnt once before is Mahesh, not Shankar.

      • The director of Sainikudu is Gunasekhar, per IMDB and some reviews I checked. Perhaps you’re confusing it with some other film, though I must say that I haven’t heard of anything that was supposed to be a remake of RDB.

  6. OMG! It’s Raju Hirani’s next

Superstar director Raju Hirani’s next is about 300 gods; called Hey Bhagwan!

After creating box-office history in Bollywood, Raju Hirani seems to be aiming at even loftier heights, the realm of the divine in fact.

If the grapevine is to be believed, Raju’s next film will be titled Hey Bhagwan! Raju has just finished his first draft and will think of an apt cast once the script is fully done.

    Raju Hirani
Our source said, “Raju had met Abhijat Joshi a couple of months back in US and discussed the idea with him. Abhijat is Raju’s most trusted associate and he loved the idea; they started working on the script. Raju is already ready with his rough first draft.

The film deals with the issue of our multi-deity culture in India and how there are different gods for different problems. The film will be molded in a typical Raju Hirani format, with humour and an underlying message.”

After 3 Idiots, speculation has been rife about what Bollywood’s hottest director will make next. Hirani’s films are usually popular for their zany plots that strike a chord with all demographics of movie-going audiences.

    Raju Hirani denied the story.

Apart from this film, Hirani is also working on Munnabhai Chale Amrika, a sequel to the massively successful Munnabhai series.

  7. Rajkumar Hirani unveils his plans
    By Taran Adarsh, February 8, 2011 – 08:35 IST

Rajkumar Hirani Okay, so everyone’s wondering what is Rajkumar Hirani making next? After the epic success of 3 IDIOTS, the super-successful director had immediately immersed himself into writing his subsequent film. There were whispers that he was planning to take the MUNNABHAI series forward, while one also heard that Hirani was toying with the idea of making a non-MUNNABHAI film. Well, here’s the latest on his next venture…

“I have already completed two scripts – the MUNNABHAI installment and a non-MUNNABHAI film. In fact, I was working on the two scripts simultaneously and as luck would have it, both have shaped up to my complete satisfaction. I am yet to take a call on which script to execute first,” Hirani informs me. The star cast, he adds, will be finalized subsequently. Meanwhile, Hirani is also creatively involved with FERRARI KI SAWARI, which stars Sharman Joshi and is directed by Hirani’s protege Rajesh Mapuskar.

There’s tremendous speculation about the star cast of both MUNNABHAI and non-MUNNABHAI films. The rumor mills insist that producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Hirani may opt for a younger set of actors for the MUNNABHAI film, while for the non-MUNNABHAI film, Hirani is vacillating between Aamir and SRK. Let’s wait and watch!
