After the release of Golmaal 3, Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgan will team up again for the Hindi remake of South super hit Singam. The Tamil film starring Surya, Anushka Shetty and Prakash Raj was a huge hit in the South recently.

The original producers Reliance are now remaking the film in Hindi and have signed this hit pair for the film. When contacted Rohit Shetty confirmed the news and said, ‘Yes, it is true and we are starting the film in February next year.

However I am yet to sit on the scripting of the film as I am busy with the release of Golmaal 3” The official spokesperson of Reliance said, “Reliance Big Pictures is the co-producer of Singam. We are also producing the Hindi version.”

  1. Haven’t seen the Tamil but this is becoming a more and more regular deal where recent Tamil hits are remade…

  2. They’re making a mistake here. This kind of over the top masala is the wrong kind to remake. They’ll get the single screens but they won’t have the multiplexes on board. Just recently Dabangg confirms the idea that the multiplexes do not really want authentic masala. Ghajini had the Hollywood thriller format (though it is still the only uncompromising film in this genre otherwise and for which I still give it enormous credit.. Aamir did not shy away from the violence or the cathartic aspects of the narrative). Dabangg was this very light (and shortest possible!) often tongue-in-cheek ‘take’ on various masala moves.

This is still a problem that has not been solved in Bombay. Might never be given the break with all the right historical contexts in this sense. Much as I cheer some of these recent masala triumphs the ‘trick’ here is also not that hard to spot.

    • Dabangg was very rooted and authentic in its tenor. Abhinav Kashyap recreated the ‘atmosphere’ of small town UP brilliantly. I think it’s a fallacy to call Dabangg a tongue-in-cheek take on ‘masala’ cinema.

NOnetheless looking forward to this. I think Ajay Devgan in a hard-boiled masala actioner would rock! I would actually prefer to see a SAAMY remake with Abhishek for that matter….

  4. Right now masala is a re-found novelty for north indian audience. Too many of these, and they’ll start flopping. But it’s typical of bollywood to jump onto any bandwagon without much thought.

    • yes agreed.. which is why I’m anxious they go about it the right way.. I think they should focus more on narrative based masala at this point (there are many such films in Tamil cinema) and move on to bread and butter masala when a certain archive is created..

  7. New Kajal in Ajay’s life

Ajay Devgn will be seen romancing South actress Kajal Aggarwal in Rohit Shetty’s Singam.

However, this won’t be her B-Town debut. Aggarwal was earlier seen in a miniscule role in 2004’s Kyun… Ho Gaya Na where she plays Aishwarya’s friend. The Singam remake will be her first Hindi film as a leading actress.

Initially, Rohit was to cast Anushka Shetty, the actress who featured in the original. Rohit confirms, “I was initially considering working with Anushka, but her dates didn’t match with us. Kajal is very popular down South.

She has done Magadheera, one of the biggest Telugu hits of all time. I am finishing Singam and start Bol Bachchan with Abhishek Bachchan immediately after and didn’t really have time to wait.”

Will the remake stay true to the original? Says Rohit, “Not really. 75 per cent of the film will be different, while the original basic premise will stay the same.

We have to make the film accessible to every market in the country. So the story will differ from the original. I have introduced new characters and subplots to cater to the general audience.”

    Who is Kajal Aggarwal?

Kajal has appeared in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada films. She made her acting debut in B-Town but her first huge commercial success at the box office were Chandamama (in Telugu) and Saroja (Tamil).

She rose to prominence after her performance as Yuvarani Mitravinda Devi and Indira (Indu) in Telugu film Magadheera, her biggest hit yet.
