    • not the worst number given the fate of other recent Akshay releases.. specially if it stays somewhat stable this week. of course it’s a pity Akshay had reduced himself to the point from the commanding heights he once held that if this film does 40-45 crores it will seem pretty decent when actually this is the sort of total that was good for him some years ago.

  1. B.O. update: ‘Teen Thay Bhai’ starts on disastrous note
    – By Taran Adarsh, April 15, 2011 – 15:35 IST

Teen Thay Bhai The sole release, TEEN THAY BHAI, has opened to disastrous houses. Released primarily at plexes, the morning and noon shows were in 4% to 7% range at several screens. The distributors may be hoping that its business picks up towards evening shows and the film also performs better over the weekend. The advantage is its low costs, but the theatrical business is not expected to contribute much given such a poor start.

This is quite simply a disastrous film.
The reasons I decided to check it out were the three talented actors and ROM’s name being associated with it.

But it made me wonder at the end of it why did ROM back this project.
everything falls flat. Rs. 225 robbed off!

Plus the mix of actors—starting from dobriyal, Shreyas, om (in that order) seems interesting.
By the way, the first two are really talented.
Even in tanu manu songs(which havent seen), saw how Dobriyal outshone both kangana and Madhavan -..Madhavan seems to be underplayed his part a bit more than needed.
Also reminds me that there is news that kangana has “eloped”with Greard Butler!!

  7. Teen Thay Bhai Non Starter Thank You Below The Mark First Week

    Saturday 16th April 2011 09.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Teen Thay Bhai was a non starter at the box office with 5-10% collections. The film has poor reports but still should do better over the weekend as it can’t get much lower. Theatrical business will be poor.

Thank You was below the mark in week one with collections of 29 crore nett approx. The is steady on its 8th day but collections are on the lower side. The film is probably looking at 40-45 crore nett lifetime collections.

Faltu grossed around 4.25 crore nett in week two for a two week totalof 20.50 crore nett. AVERAGE

Game is out of most theatres and will finish with business of around 7.50 crore nett . DISASTER

  9. Assuming DMD is liked (and I’ve said this before) I’d find anything less than 35 crores in week 1 not very acceptable for this. This is partly a damning indictment on many films that should be doing a lot more and don’t but that the media pretends are average/above average and what not. Take Thank You, the film probably ends up around 40 crores or a bit more. Now this is ‘great’ only compared to where other Akshay films have been ending up recently. To put it differently even at 45 crores Thank You would be in the Kites range. How could this be ‘ok’?! This was a good range for Akshay some years ago when he had HB and so on doing as much. That was about 4 years ago. So as I’ve said before even at 70-80 crores most ‘blockbuster’ type films are really under-performing. We saw recently Rajneeti and G3 end up in the 90-95 crore range. There’s really no excuse for many other films.

Getting back to DMD I must admit that the ‘non-openings’ of KHJJS and especially Game give me pause (this is different from all older Abhishek flops that actually did quite decently even when they flopped, D6 and Raavan both hit a mid-30s range, even Drona in ’08 did as much as KHJJS and Game put together, actually it was quite solid on day 1).

Nonetheless I don’t believe in lowering the bar. DMD has had a perfect campaign, the music has worked, Abhishek has a look and role that’s attracted attention, also has the item number, the film looks great, on and on. In fact the only thing that stops me from predicting even more here is precisely Abhishek’s track record. And of course the fact that the family audiences cannot be counted on for this film.

So 35 crores would be my benchmark for week 1. Sure the film could open to 30 and be very stable and do 60 or more and that would be fine, I’m not wedded to one number, but my benchmarks are just higher. Yes, despite the failures. Because I think it’s possible for this film. Wouldn’t say it about every other film in this situation. If the film opened to under 30 but remained stable and did well overall I’d say Abhishek’s damage has shown up even here.

If the film works it has a free run more or less till June with only very small releases every week. I’m not very bothered about the IPL. For one it seems anti-climactic this time after the WC but even otherwise I just don’t sense as much buzz. Sure things will heat up a bit towards the end. That’s never the difference between a hit and a flop.

In sum I expect some serious numbers here. I think this film could shock even many of the fans by throwing up some very surprising numbers. Of course I’ve been wrong before on this score (though not on the big ones.. Raavan for example would easily have done 70 crores had it been liked, think the same is true for D6.. any prediction assumes acceptance for a film… but yes I didn’t expect a non-existent start for KHJJS though I was never predicting great things either.. with Game too I had my suspicions.. again such a non-existent start was surprising).

  11. Abhishek Bachchan Should Thank Two D’s: Dev Anand & Deepika Padukone
4 hours ago by Komal Nahta

Plot: Prateik Babbar’s life starts spiralling out of control when his scholarship to a US university gets rejected. Police officer Abhishek Bachchan begins his ruthless, relentless campaign and takes on the murky drug world in Goa. Local musician Rana Daggubati is a mute spectator to what is happening around him. Aspiring airhostess Bipasha Basu’s dreams have turned to dust. Ruthless local businessman Aditya Pancholi finds himself pushed to the extreme limit with Abhishek Bachchan’s arrival and turns to the mysterious drug kingpin.
    Dum Maaro Dum Preview

    Dum Maaro Dum Movie Wallpaper

Star cast: Abhishek Bachchan has had three back-to-back box-office debacles, Raavan, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey and the latest shame… sorry, Game.
Bipasha Basu: Bipasha also has had a very bad year, what with disasters like Aakrosh, Lamhaa and Pankh. Also starring: Prateik Babbar, Rana Daggubati, Aditya Pancholi.

Promotion of Dum Maaro Dum: Very good; although Dev Anand’s super hit dum maaro dum song used in this film has been ‘mauled’ so as to hurt the sensibilities of the more orthodox audience, its picturisation on Deepika Padukone is an ace up their sleeve. Whatever opening Dum Maaro Dum takes, Dev Anand’s song and Deepika’s dance will have a major part to play.

Expectations: Expectations of the youth are quite high in spite of Abhishek Bachchan’s rough patch.

    • Note how when the film looks promising Nahata does his usual stuff (and he’s not the only one). So it’s about the DMD song now. Supposedly a song that no one liked?! What about Abhishek’s own song here?! It’s like Guru wasn’t doing well till an engagement made the audience love it!

As I’ve been saying for years there has never been a time, NEVER, when the trade has given Abhishek an easy time. Hits, flops or otherwise. So even here they will keep attributing it to other factors if it works. Not that this matters ultimately. Audiences don’t depend on these narratives. No one cared what the trade was saying about Guru (of course over time they all say it’s Abhishek’s solo hit!). But these attempts should nonetheless be seen as what they are,.

And of course online one can expect far worse from BOI.

But the Nahata thing is a good sign for the opening of the film. Wouldn’t have needed to say this otherwise!

  14. Dum Maro Dum Brings Back Paid Previews

    Tuesday 19th April 2011 11.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dum Maro Dum is a film which will be having paid previews after a long time. Films like Singh Is Kinng, Ghajini, Chandni Chowk To China, Kambhakkht Ishq and Three Idiots had paid previews but since then very few films have paid previews and if so very limited shows.

Dum Maro Dum paid previews will start at 6pm Thursday at most multiplexes. A theatre like Big Ghatkopar will have eight shows, many other multiplexes in metroes will have 4-6 shows while other centres its 2-4 shows. All in all its a big paid previews release.

Paid previews work well with good content as its brings in more money and word of mouth kicks in quicker but with poor content you risk the all important first Friday being below the mark when you have the single screens coming into play as well.

  15. Thank You Has Rock Steady Second Monday

    Tuesday 19th April 2011 09.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Thank You is now doing well at the box office but with a major release on Friday in Dum Maro Dum it may only be able to collect till then as a lot of screen space will be lost to Dum Maro Dum on Friday.

Thank You collected 1.25 crore approx on its second Monday with collections are 25% down from its second Friday. The second week is now looking to be near 11 crore nett which compares well with good Akshay Kumar box office performers of last year. Housefull collected 13.75 crore nett in its second week and Tees Maar Khan grossed 10.50 crore nett. The biggest second week of 2011 is Yamla Pagla Deewana at 14.75 crore nett.

The film has appreciation outside metro multiplexes but low opening due to poor promotion has cost the film. The film should do a distributor share near 24 crore but it the film would have been safe for distributors (where it was sold) when the all India share was 30 crore.

    • So what verdict will TY have with distribution share of 24.

    • This is what you call “spin” … what trash reporting. Supporting a film that will make 45 crore probably and saying 11 crore is good “when” compared with Akshay’s previous movies. Man thats like saying lets compare Prince’s collections with Vivek Oberoi’s previous flops and making a blockbuster out of it.
Are Akshay films really scraping the barrel now at the 45-50 crore mark? When others are going past 70Cr or more, BOI is making happy on these rather piss poor efforts from Akshay Kumar films.

That is 60 cr nett or little less perhaps.

45 cr total Nett for a movie costing 58-60 cr is Flop.

Though it has trended better than many last Akki movies.

    Tuesday, 19 April , 2011, 15:56

Santosh Sivan’s Prithviraj period drama, Urumi, which released on March 31 has got critical as well as box-office acclaim.

The film, in its first week in 77 screens in Kerala, has taken a distributors share of Rs 1.55 cr, which is very good.

Urumi has netted Rs 27.40 lakhs from Padma and Sridhar in Ernakulam in 19 days, the highest ever for a Prithviraj film. The film has been classified as a hit by the trade and is the number at the KBO.

At the number two is Mohanlal’s multi-starrer Christian Brothers, which continues to do extraordinary business. The film is reported to have already got a share of Rs 8.5 cr in 25 days from releasing stations, which no film has done before.

In third position is Jayaram’s Makeup Man, which is very strong in small stations, and at number four is Marykundu Oru Kunjadu.

In fifth place is Mammootty’s August 15, which has failed.

  20. Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
‘Teen Thay Bhai’ spoils the party

    April 20, 2011 – 07:38 IST

TEEN THAY BHAI has been rejected and it’s no secret. Till a few weeks ago, a big chunk of the industry felt that medium-budget films were the ray of hope for film-makers who couldn’t manage/afford to sign the big ones for their projects. The box-office response to films like BAND BAAJA BAARAAT and TANU WEDS MANU in particular reiterated this belief. But the poor response to TEEN THAY BHAI has spoiled the party.

TEEN THAY BHAI had no major contender to compete with. It was a solo release. Had holidays during the week. Was backed by top notch names. Starred actors who are respected by moviegoers. But the poor reports and negative reviews went against the film completely. The silver lining is its low costs [between Rs. 7.5 cr to Rs. 7.75 cr; excl. P & A expenses], but the theatrical business is dismal.

Okay, so what’s the status on THANK YOU? The PR machinery would like us to believe that the film will recover costs, but the truth is THANK YOU is a losing proposition. Ask the distributors who have acquired the film and you will get the correct picture. The business is definitely better than Akshay’s PATIALA HOUSE, but that’s no compliment.

Also, the figures pertaining to the Satellite Rights and Music Rights, reported in a section of the media, are way off the mark. Oh yes, the figures are inflated; just to prove that the film will have a smooth sailing, as far as the economics are concerned. Nope, it won’t!
Abhishek Bachchan is nervous. He’s appearing for a new examination this Friday. DUM MAARO DUM has to show dum at the ticket window. His last few films recorded dismal figures and made holes in the pockets of its investors. DUM MAARO DUM has everything going in its favor – ensemble star cast, popular soundtrack, great promotion, right distributors [Fox Star]. It has to click!

Incidentally, Fox Star is giving it an extensive release. The film will have a wide release not just in India, but in markets like U.K., U.S.A. and Australia too.

  21. Failure of ‘Teen Thay Bhai’ has turned out to be some relief for ‘Thank You’ since now audience have only one choice in the form of this Akshay Kumar starrer. Though the film’s opening was patchy with Friday much below the mark, a gradual rise in footfalls had helped the film stabilise over the weekend. Thankfully for the film, the weekdays remained consistent as well which means there was no crash in collections, something which was the case in ‘Tees Maar Khan’.

All of this meant that ‘Thank You’ managed to hold on and reached 30 crores mark as the first week came to an end. Is this the kind of opening that Anees Bazmee-Akshay Kumar team would have been hoping for? Certainly not. But considering the fact that the film was so badly panned by the critics and there was also competition from IPL, ‘Thank You’ has still managed to keep it’s head above the water.

Since the film managed to stay afloat over the second weekend as well, it is now clear that ‘Thank You’ won’t flop. Though producers have already made their profits, the distributors too can now hope for their investment being returned at the least due to two open weeks for ‘Thank You’.

Till last week it was being questioned if this Anees Bazmee film would manage to cross the total of his ‘No Entry’ (which was in the vicinity of 45 crores). As things stand today, there is a very good chance of that happening. And by some stroke of luck, one can even expect ‘Thank You’ to hit the golden mark of 50 crores, though that does sound a little too stretched.

3-D Erotic Comedy Shakes Up Hong Kong Box Office
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

HONG KONG (AP) — A pioneering 3-D erotic comedy has taken the Hong Kong box office by storm, beating the first-day record set by “Avatar” and drawing viewers from mainland China as it eyes a global rollout.

The $3.5 million Cantonese-language production “3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy” had earned 17 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.2 million) as of Tuesday since opening last week on 73 screens, according to figures provided by producer Stephen Shiu. That’s nearly seven times the total take so far for Hollywood thriller “Scream 4,” which has earned HK$2.5 million ($320,000).

“Sex and Zen” — a remake of a 1991 Hong Kong movie by the same name — features full nudity and camouflaged lovemaking scenes but does not show actual sexual intercourse, as is common in pornographic films. The movie, which stars Japanese porn stars Hara Saori and Suo Yukiko and Hong Kong actress Vonnie Liu, tells the story of a sexually frustrated scholar in ancient China who loses himself in the harem of a duke he befriends.

The film brought in HK$2.78 million ($360,000) on its opening day last Thursday, eclipsing the previous first-day record set by James Cameron’s 2009 3-D sci-fi epic “Avatar,” which earned HK$2.63 million ($340,000) on its first day.

In Taiwan, where the movie opened Friday on 77 screens, it earned 17 million New Taiwan Dollars ($590,000) through Sunday. That figure is still inferior to Hollywood competition but marks the best opening weekend for a Chinese-language movie in Taiwan this year, Shiu said Wednesday.

Shiu said he believes he has capitalized on a huge desire for 3-D erotic movies.

“We met people’s expectations. People have always thought that you need 3-D technology for this kind of content. So people were very curious,” he said.

“Sex and Zen” bills itself as the world’s first 3-D erotic film, although Shiu acknowledges that a South Korean production hit the market before his release did. However, Shiu’s movie is still a pioneering attempt at using new 3-D technology in theatrical releases of erotic films, given that the market in the West is now largely dominated by DVD releases.

The movie’s Hong Kong performance has also been boosted by an influx of mainland Chinese viewers, whom Shiu estimates accounted for up to half of the business at some theaters. Although former British colony Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997, it still maintains a separate political system — and film regulatory regime. While Hong Kong has a film ratings system, mainland China doesn’t, which effectively rules out erotic content.

“Sex and Zen” received a restricted rating in Hong Kong, allowing only audiences aged 18 and older to see the film.

It’s not the first time mainland viewers have traveled to Hong Kong to evade censorship by Chinese authorities. Many mainlanders crossed over to watch the uncut version of Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s sexually explicit 2007 spy thriller “Lust, Caution.”

Hong Kong theater operators have also sought to cash in on the novelty factor by staging women-only screenings.

“Sex and Zen” has also been released in about a dozen theaters in Chinese communities in the Australian cities Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but Shiu didn’t have box office results. The movie is scheduled to be released in South Korea on May 12, and in France, Italy and India in June. Shiu is also targeting a May release for Singapore, although the filmmakers are still working with local censors on the final cut.

  23. Huge Competition For Dum Maro Dum In North And South

    Thursday 21st April 2011 12.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dum Maro Dum will face huge competition in the North and South when it gets the full all India release on Friday.

Dharti (Punjabi) has a very good advance booking in Punjab meaning business of Dum Maro Dum will be hit in Punjab though Dum Maro Dum may still gross well from the Gurgaon/Faridabad belt of the East Punjab circuit.

In the South there is Mr Perfect (Telugu) which has taken a phenomenal advance in multiplexes of Nizam. Infact multiplexes of Hyderabad are 95% full already for Friday. Both East Punjab and Nizam are set to be under performers for Dum Maro Dum on Friday and are likely to be totally dependent on word of mouth.
