Bachchan in Gowariker’s next

LINK

After Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan, Ashutosh Gowariker is all set to work with the legend, Mr Amitabh Bachchan in his next. Big B will play the lead in Gowariker’s next film all set to go on floors next year.

Though the industry is abuzz with speculations about Big B’s role in the film being similar to James Bond, a source close to the project revealed, “No, it’s not a James Bond type of role. Amitji simply will be seem playing a detective in the film.”

Currently, Gowariker is busy scouting for the locations for his still untitled project. “Amitji loved the story and his role,” added the source.

Ashutosh Gowariker has always been bit of a perfectionist since his Lagaan days. With films like Swades, Jodhaa Akbar and his last release Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, it can be safely said, that the filmmaker believes in didactic or historical features on a big canvas.

However, with the Big B, the director seems to have shifted his stance a bit. Gowariker has many ideas for his next film, but when Amitji said ‘yes’, he decided to stop looking beyond. Gowariker is very happy and excited about kicking off a film with Amitji. He is very happy since his dream of working with Big B is finally coming true.”

Ashutosh Gowariker and the Bachchans, interestingly, go back a long way. In 2009, Gowariker at an award function declared that it should have been Bachchan bahu Aishwarya winning the best actress award and not Priyanka Chopra for Fashion on Jaya Bachchan’s prodding. Mrs Big B had mentioned then, that she couldn’t understand why Ash’s performance in Jodhaa Akbar was not acknowledged by the jury.

Gowariker then moved on to work with Junior Bachchan Abhishek in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se. Also, he had worked with Amitabh Bachchan behind the screen when he lent his voice for the superhit Lagaan, ten years back.

Bachchan and Gowariker remained unavailable for comments.

  4. Not sure how compelling a detective thriller Gowariker will be able to come out with. This type of film requires a sense for pacing (among other things) and that’s not the guy’s strong suit. Then again with Bachchan in the lead and with the right kind of character, the director’s otherwise sluggish approach might feel more revitalized.

    • I am skeptical too but I was nonetheless not unhappy with the news as a guy like Gowariker despite his shortcomings doesn’t deserve extinction. Unfortunately the kinds of projects he seems to be interested in are either not successful or not very profitable even when they are successful. In such a situation the only thing he has going for him is the ability to attract major names and keep things viable somehow. But he’s definitely on life support.

    Liked the headline —
Know that gowarikar is currently sitting on a flop spree but Gowarikar is the sort of a guy who can still handle bachchan in this situation/ stage reasonably well.
The way he handled a few sequences (eg Khwaja mere Khwaja in Jodha akbar) gives hope!!
Having said that, agree with gf, that the “detective” bit is a wee suspect..
He is not the sort of guy for the “detective/thriller/espionage/spy” genre.
Anyhow, considering the type of stuff bachchan ends up doing nowadays, this wont be disappointing comparatively, and might spring a few surprises (but not at the box office front!!)

my other major interest is whether this will bring in its wake the FIRST boafide bachchan sr starrer with AR Rahmans music.
I suspect that this will be a small budget KHJJS-type film with music by some “talented””(shady) newcomer.
But if Rahman is indeed roped in (and this finally gets made which is also suspect), this will be an event for me (the results nothwithstanding….)

  7. Sounds interesting to me as Bachchan in a detective role can work especially if it has a suspense angle.

  8. Ashutosh’s films barring Lagaan lack enough drama to hold viewer’s interest. Wish he has learnt from his mistakes and compromised on his flat narration style.. because otherwise his films dont do well commercially.

    • His baazi wasn’t bad on these grounds.. but somehow post-Lagaan where he really came into his own as a filmmaker he developed a very plodding narrative style even on his best days. I nonetheless find him genuine on many levels and don’t personally have an issue with his pace even where I can ‘critically’ identify such. but you’re quite right.. he’s not getting anywhere with the audience until he changes himself on this score or else compromises on the subjects and does something a lot more multiplex-friendly.

agree with TM here – AG needs to tell “stories” which connect to the audiences instantly……somewhere he gets too much obsessed with….himself….but i am really happy that he is working with Big B – hope it is not a comedy. I am looking forward to Aarakshan….after a really long time, i am itching to watch a BIG B film….and yeah “Aks” is an altime favorite where BIG B vs Manoj Bajpai was a high voltage drama….what a film! i saw it in a theater with solid sound system……

  9. He could have done a very good job in What is your Rashee if he had stuck to only 2 major songs – perhaps one that covers many themes. The movie was too long and boring with a song for each character Priyanka played. Hrishikesh Mukherjee would have done a fab job with that story and that too inly in 14 reels!

Ashutosh has some good ideas and can make a good film if he keeps himself to a tight script and appropriate length. I think he suffers from what is called the curse of the 2nd half esp in Swades which otherwise was a good film. I liked JA.

      you mean including Swades?!

By the way you have just about proved my point every single time. You only appear to say something snide about the bachchans. This gets tiresome after a while. It’s not the negativity I would be bothered about if you also contributed to other discussions even in a small way. But you come here for one purpose and one purpose only. There are many of us here who say negative things about lots of stars but it’s not the only thing we say.

While it is true that you’re not being uncivil in any ways I also don’t find this kind of contribution productive. Either one appears once in a blue moon and says something of this sort and disappears or one does so consistently but one also has other things to say. But if it’s neither one nor the other then one is only raising the negativity factor for the general blog. I have the very same position with other stars too and in fact I have the very same position even when there are people who say equally silly stuff on the positive side with respect to one star or another and then disappear. I have dealt with many of these comments so I know. Your position on the Bachchans is quite clear. In the absence of any other contribution I don’t see a point to your saying the very same things irrespective of context. So I hope you will reconsider your stance.

Raising finger at swades again and again looks a bit funny. It was a major flop and no one can deny that.If you read my comment again,i have made my point clear by writing “Gowariker’s part record”nd that includes Swades also and what is the problem in accepting that?I have just expressed my views about this film here and i can be wrong also,so i am surprised after seeing your response over my comments.

the more you abuse Mr Bachan more he is getting busier into films.producers, directors are still queing to sign films with a mega star…he is superstar and thats not a fluke.
I wonder if srk will sustain at the age where Amitabh has done
he is no shy doing and experimating roles and he always done that weather its kabhi kabhi or adalat and recently sooryawansham…black is the proof that he will do it at the age of 80s…he is still not aged…very very down to earth

srk during the release of don quoted..he is last ever superstar…well ,well, salman and amir have proved and also ritik and ajay devgan ruling bollywood…
Don 2 will become and bring good initial but
will never match Amitabhs Don in 1978….

Satyam has a valid point in his comment above regarding your presence and participation on his blog. A bit more proactive and productive discussions on your part would be welcome. Constantly criticising a particular actor can becme tedious.

but for srk flops in tv shows has and was monumented disasters…like paachvi pass which should have been paachvi failed

srk films flop list in his 30s

guddu, yes boss ,anjaam, badshah, paheli, don, and many many more and to embarassed to list it…the monument disaster was ASHOKA will flopped so badly that srk forgot how old is he..this flops were in his peak years whereas Amitabh was superb and even his flpos recovered the mony but srk billu could not do that..even MNIK was disaster which fox international were mugged by buying at 100cr which only recovered 80cr…so taran if i list srk flops in his peak years you will be ashemed..

srk is yet to break duck to make 100cr,salman,amir and ajay devgan are ruling the bollywood, srk has more worries with this lot ,
a major doubt if Don 2 will do that and even managed 100cr business…

  16. Lol @MNIK is a disaster and Billu a srk movie.Wait srk ll cross 300cr mark this year as he is having two highly entertaining movies on hand, don’t worry for that.If i ll start writing flops of Bachchan’s whole career, then i need at least a week’s time.So lets discuss it on some other day.Regarding failure of kbc and KAPPSTH,i suggest you to check the source and then talk.

    Like

    • oh I have checked the source regarding kbc.where Amitabh had return and rescue KBC 4 when srk left.srk was not entertained the contract because he had flopped ,Amitabh had to take it over.

as far srk is concerned we shall see if can rule again.

taran, stop counting chickens before they are hatched
maybe he will bring a good initial but can he mar 300cr ,in your wildest dream…The bollywood has changed in the last 2 years but srk films are still boring and same all ghisa pita traingle stories…raa one looks awful in promos .
don 2 will be a hit but thats about it …he will remain @ no 4 position and sliding as salman, amir…goes from strenght to strenght

      • If the presence of srk films makes a hit then
taran, paheli and ashka would had been blockbusters
but people who go to cinema needs more then srk in it.
as it is now bollywood is buzzing with salman khan and in my opinioun salman has proved that the crown which srk ever had of king khan must be switced to salman..

By the way, srk fans are going gaga about it more than hr fans about it as they see chance to grab support from hr fans and undermine one of the iconic movie of aamir. It is more of a propoganda than a personal view.

Salman Khan turned down Ashutosh Gowariker’s offer with his unique brand of plainspeak

    Subhash K Jha

Posted On Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 02:04:20 AM

It was barely a month ago that Ashutosh Gowariker reportedly approached Salman Khan with a script that he thought the mega-star would find strikingly unorthodox.

True to his style, Salman completely turned the tables on the director.

Apparently Salman heard Ashutosh out and then calmly said, “I don’t do good films. I do hit films. I work in films that make money, not the ones that get awards.”

Before Ashutosh could get over the shock of Salman’s plainspeak, he also added that he has his own pace of working. Salman told the Lagaan director, “I arrive in the afternoon and shoot at my own pace. You’re used to working with other actors (read: Shah Rukh, Aamir) who reach the set on the dot at 9 am and work according to your pace.”

Salman then politely suggested that perhaps it would be a better idea for Ashutosh to approach another actor. The above incident, says a source, is indicative of Salman’s new career plan: no film for friends or to bail out distressed filmmakers in trouble who approach him in the hope of a hit.

Predictably Ashutosh Gowariker denied ever approaching Salman. “How I wish that were true. I’d love to do a film with him. No such luck,” said the filmmaker.

However our source insists Gowariker did approach Khan.
