Vidya Balan in Sudhir Mishra’s Mehrunnisa (older post updated)

After going back and forth, deciding who his Mehrinissa will be, buzz is that Sudhir Mishra has finally zeroed upon Vidya Balan to play the titular character. Katrina Kaif is now formally out of the race. And Vidya will be joining the team towards the end of the year.

“That’s when Vidya will be free of her next assignment namely Rajkumar Gupta’s Ghanchakkar,” says a source. Interestingly Mehrunissa passed on from UTV to a rival company DAR Motion Pictures.

And Vidya apparently has readily agreed to be part of Mehrunissa. But the priority dates have gone to UTV’s Ghanchakkar.

“Sudhir has no option but to shoot with her during year-end when she is free. Since he and producer Nikhil Advani are very keen to have Vidya on board to play Mehrunissa, they are willing to wait it out,” says the source.

Vidya will be playing Mehrunissa in two different time zones, at the age of 20 and again at the age of 62. And we hear that Vidya’s older role has been modelled on Waheeda Rehman.

Says a source close to the project, “It’s interesting that Vidya would be asked to model the older avatar of her character on Waheedaji and share screen space with Bachchan saab and Chintuji. Because Bachchan saab has frequently compared Vidya to Waheedaji.”

Vidya will apparently be using some clever makeup and prosthetics to look convincing opposite Big B and Rishi Kapoor. Producer Nikhil Advani refrained from commenting on the actress’ presence in Mehrunissa.

Circa 1983, Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor shared screen space in Manmohan Desai’s blockbuster Coolie. 28 years later, the stars will reunite for Sudhir Mishra’s directorial venture Mehrunnisa. And that’s not all. The project produced by Nikhil Advani will also have the actors’ sons Abhishek and Ranbir making cameo appearances, making it one of Sudhir’s most ambitious project till date.

While Amitabh and Abhishek have worked together in films like Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar and Sarkar Raj, Rishi and his son Ranbir have never shared screen space. “It is a script that Sudhir Mishra started writing in 1996. However, it failed to take off that time. Nikhil Advani was Sudhir’s assistant back then. After all these years, Nikhil approached Sudhir and asked him to rework the script. Saurabh Shukla is writing the dialogues for the film,” revealed a source.

Talking about the storyline, the source said, “The film starts off with two old men played by Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor reminiscing about their past. Here is where Abhishek and Ranbir come in. They play their respective fathers’ younger selves.”

“Nikhil wanted to take this film on the floors this year. But both Ranbir and Abhishek are busy with other projects now. The film will go on floors only next year now,” added the source.

When contacted, Nikhil Advani refused to comment on the project. Sudhir Mishra remained unavailable as well. “Neither Nikhil nor Sudhir want to talk about the project right now.

It’s a huge project and they want to announce it in a big way later. Both Amitabh and Rishi have loved the script and agreed to do it. In fact, the film should also star Sudhir’s favourite Chitrangda Singh,” informed the source.

Though Amitabh and Rishi were a part of Rakeysh Omprakaash Mehra’s Delhi 6, the actors did not share any screen space. They have earlier worked in super hit films like Amar Akbar Anthony and Kabhi Kabhi.

Big B and Rishi Kapoor were a part of Delhi 6 too, where the earlier did a guest appearance but did not share any screen space with Rishi. They have earlier been parts of superhit films such as Amar Akbar Anthony and Kabhi Kabhie.

  1. Would always be interested in seeing these two together. The specific project I am somewhat more skeptical about if the outline here is correct. Would have loved to see a political subject (a Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi kind of deal) with these two.

Sudhir Mishra’s ambitious project has been put on the backburner, while he focuses on another project

From its very inception, the industry has been abuzz with speculation over the casting of Sudhir Mishra’s project Mehrunissa. Many media reports claimed that the film would star Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh.

But it seems that there is another project that the director is focusing on. When contacted, Mishra told Mumbai Mirror, “Mehrunissa is still in its final drafting stage. The script will be finalised by October end. How can I cast the actors when my script is not ready? I do not work in such a manner.”

While the director dismisses the rumours surrounding Mehrunissa, he told us that he is actually shooting for a film based on sexual harassment at the workplace. “The film is about relationships. It discusses the shift in dynamics between a mentor and a trainee, when power and greed are added to the equation.

The plot uses an advertising firm as a background to highlight the issue. We will wrap-up shooting by next month. The film stars Chitrangda Singh and Arjun Rampal,” added Mishra.

The working title of the film is Inkaar. Deepti Naval and Saurabh Shukla are also a part of the film. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures will release the film by next year.

  8. Amitabh, Rishi fight over Chitrangada
    November 14, 2011 17:52 IST

Plans to shoot Sudhir Mishra’s ambitious period epic Mehrunissa in Lucknow [ Images ] with Amitabh Bachchan [ Images ] and Rishi Kapoor [ Images ] have fallen through.

It’s seen as practically impossible to shoot with these actors in the crowded film-fixated city. No matter how topnotch the security bandobast, it still fell short of requirements for the Big B [ Images ].

Says a source, “Though Mr Bachchan himself is game for any kind of shooting eventuality and is known to plunge into crowds unheedful of security risks, it was felt that shooting in the crowded streets lanes and bazaars of Lucknow would be impossible. The script is now being revised to accommodate Lucknow more in the interiors than on the streets.”

When quizzed about the downplaying of the City Of Nawabs in his epic drama, director Sudhir Mishra said, “Mehrunissa is set in Lucknow. But it isn’t going to be the Lucknow that we see stereotypically in our films. Not the ‘nawaabi’ pehle-aap-pehle-aap culture. My film is situated more in the heart of Lucknow where the middleclass lives.”

Sudhir admits he would now have to recreate Lucknow on a studio set. “It would be impossible to shoot with the actors in public places. Besides, this is Lucknow during the Partition. We’re recreating the city on a studio floor in Mumbai [ Images ]. We will then match the portions shot on the studio set with the actual Lucknow.”

Apparently, Amitabh and Rishi play a Hindu and a Muslim, respectively.

Says a source, “They’re as thick as thieves, inseparable pals, until they fall in love with the same girl, played by Chitrangada Singh [ Images ].Thereafter, they don’t speak to each other for decades.”

While the Big B has done films set in another era, Rishi Kapoor has never done a period film before and is preparing for his part by reading up as much as he can on pre-Partition era.”

Interestingly, Amitabh and Rishi have no scenes with the Chitrangada. “Though they’re supposed to be in love with Chitrangada’s character, she’s part of their past, so she’d only have scenes with the actors chosen to play the young Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor.”

  9. Big B says ‘yes’ to Mehrunissa, but only after UTV opts out

Sudhir Mishra and Nikhil Advani’s Mehrunissa had everything in place. But one major ingredient was still missing without which, Mishra’s recipe was incomplete. Amitabh Bachchan. Mumbai Mirror has learnt that the Big B has finally given his nod of approval to the film.

Acquiring Big B’s approval has not come easy. Writer-producer Advani and director Sudhir Mishra have had to give up their possible alliance with UTV in the process.

According to sources from the industry, the Bachchans have decided to stay away from UTV projects ever since Aishwarya Rai was replaced by Kareena Kapoor in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. “Neither Amitji nor Abhishek have ever indicated their non-acceptance of any project on the basis of the production house. However, the facts reveal that they have maintained their distance from UTV produced ventures. Abhishek, for instance couldn’t be persuaded to star in Raj Kumar Gupta’s satirical musical Ghanchakkar produced by UTV. Also, Amitji never really committed to Mehrunissa until UTV was out of the picture,” explained a source.

Apparently, the film was created keeping Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor in mind. Even though Bachchan had not said ‘yes’ to the project, the crew was ready to shoot in Lucknow with Rishi Kapoor a few months back. “We’re ready to shoot with Amitji and Chintuji. But Amitji has still not said a final ‘yes’. We thought he was not signing new projects, but then he signed another film and we were seriously worried,” a crewmember had earlier conveyed the team’s anxiety.

However, with Bachchan finally accepting the offer, the film’s schedule are now in place. And the ‘acceptance’ has come in the wake of UTV opting out as the co-producer of the project. The film will now be co-produced by DAR Motion Pictures and Advani. UTV’s Siddharth Roy Kapoor remained unavailable for comment.

    • Vidya – Emraan in Ghanchakkar

Posted On Monday, February 20, 2012 at 02:05:09 AM

After their successful pairing in The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi will come together once again, in Rajkumar Gupta’s film Ghanchakkar.

Vidya Balan told Mumbai Mirror, “The story of Ghanchakkar is creativity at its best and I can’t think of a better director than Rajkumar Gupta for this film. Emraan is a brilliant co-star and together, we hope to rock it.”

While Vidya has already worked with Gupta in No One Killed Jessica, this will be the first film for Hashmi and Gupta.

When contacted, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, UTV Motion Pictures CEO said, “Rajkumar and Pervez Sheikh have written a fabulously, quirky comic-thriller that will surprise you with its twists and turns. We are sure that this explosive combination of Emraan, Vidya and Rajkumar will take the audiences by storm.”

  10. Mishra finalises his leading lady

Posted On Tuesday, February 07, 2012 at 02:04:42 AM

While the final go ahead had to come from the Big B, the casting for the female lead in Mehrunissa also had been under speculation. On the one hand, producer UTV wanted Katrina Kaif or Vidya Balan to increase the commercial viability of the project, on the other, director Sudhir Mishra had been rooting for his favourite lady Chitrangda Singh. And now, finally, Mishra has reportedly, won the battle.

“Considering that the film is about a girl who drives a wedge in the 50-year-old friendship between two friends, the production house feels that the youth market can only be won over by A-list actor,” a source from the unit had informed Mirror earlier.

UTV had even arranged for a detailed narration of the script to Ms Kaif. While Sudhir remained unavailable for comment, Chitrangda said, “Nothing is finalised yet. Please check with Sudhir on what stage the project is at the moment. But yes, it’s a great part, a classic when and if it happens. I’ll be more than delighted!”

UTV is selling out on projects now. How the hell can Katrina be comparable to Vidya?

I wish producers would have the guts to stop pushing Katrina as an “actress” and let her focus on doing her bad dancing in item numbers or playing arm candy roles.

Wow- Sudhir Mishra is a great director- loved HKA and he always makes excellent projects for his actresses- even Koya Koya Chand was very enjoyable if a little too slow and self-indulgent in places. This sounds like the perfect project for Vidya.

Wish she would ditch the Emraan movie and give full attention to this right now. If this comes out too long after the hype over TDP has settled down it might not work. Our audience has a very short memory when it comes to actresses.

      • Chitrangda to play the lead in Mehrunissa

By Bollywood Hungama News Network ,May 2, 2012

The leading lady of Sudhir Mishra’s next directorial venture Mehrunissa has been zeroed down and it is none other than the sultry Chitrangda Singh. Chitrangda has surpassed the likes of Vidya Balan and Katrina Kaif to bag this role.

In the film, Chitrangda will be seen romancing Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. Mehrunissa is the story of a female actor in the 1970s and traces her journey from the age of 20 to the present when she is 62.

Mehrunissa will be Chitrangda’s third film with the director Sudhir Mishra after Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Yeh Saali Zindagi.

The film is jointly produced by Sudhir Mishra, Nikhil Advani and DAR Motion Pictures.
