Dutt and Shahrukh in Karan Malhotra’s next?

LINK

Sanjay Dutt and Shah Rukh Khan have come together on screen just once. In the title song of the SRK starrer Om Shanti Om in 2007. But if all goes well, the two superstars may soon share more than just a dance step on screen in Agneepath director Karan Malhotra’s next.

While there had been rumours about the ‘next’ venture in question being a sequel to Malhotra’s 2012 blockbuster Agneepath, the filmmaker told us that it would be an original idea.

“All I can say at the moment is that I do have a film in mind and it’s not a sequel or a remake. As soon as I have a clearer picture I will first tell my producer Karan Johar about it, then share it with the world,” Malhotra told Mirror.

Our source close to Dharma Productions however indicated that the filmmaker’s next project would be a rugged action film with ‘tailor-made’ roles for Dutt and SRK. While the two actors have been very friendly off screen, they had never come together for a full-fledged production ever. This would be the first.

Moreover, Karan Johar’s production house that was rumoured to be moving away from their favourite hero Shah Rukh is planning two projects with the actor in the coming year. Our source revealed, that Malhotra would definitely direct one of them.

    • Dutt can be such a commanding screen presence if he makes an effort to choose scripts wisely.

For someone who signs a role where he’s required to be a pimp to male escorts, the less said about making right choices the better

Sanjay Dutt is actually greater than all Khans and all his contemporaries of 80s, in terms of talent, charisma, screen presence. His inability to handle his career & life properly kept him from realising his full potential. 😦

Before other films, it was his Khalnayak which made the anti-hero cool!

Here’s Abhijeet, now firing away at SRK and Farah Khan (and a top music director who has studio in Chennai!). What a sulky man!:

I’ll never sing for SRK again: Abhijeet

Since last singing for Shah Rukh Khan (“Dhoom Tana” in ” Om Shanti Om”) in 2007, Abhijeet Bhattacharya has kept out of the limelight. The singer has been in the real estate business for some time, and is also investing in art. “I am also involved with a coffee brand and will soon join hands with an Australia-based coffee brand to launch retail outlets here,” he says. He tells us why he’s moving away from singing, the profession that made him a household name.

          So you’re a full-fledged businessman now?

Who doesn’t want to broaden one’s avenues? Singing was never my bread and butter anyway. Also, there are things I am hurt about.

          Such as?

I don’t know why our filmmakers never give singers due credit. During the end credits of ” Main Hoon Na”, the singers’ names appeared right at the end. Worst still, segments were shot with the chaiwalas and dressmen, but not with singers. My family saw the film and felt betrayed. The same happened with “Om Shanti Om”. And here I am… Shah Rukh Khan’s voice! I conveyed my disappointment to Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

He also got Akon to sing for him…

Except for pubs and discotheques, where does one hear that song? But folks still fondly remember the “Chalte Chalte”, “Yes Boss” and “Main Hoon Na” numbers. It is these songs that have immortalised Shah Rukh. I will never sing for him again.

What if he approaches you? Sorry bol do! When you can make up with Farah Khan, whose husband tweeted rubbish about you, then there should be no problem with a simple man like me. But this is not about me. I want all singers to get their due. There is this one incident I just can’t forget.

          Go on…

I was in Chennai to record a song for this very famous music director currently ruling Hindi filmdom. There was a wooden bench, not even a sofa, and a singer, a Padmashree winner, writers and a renowned lyricist were there, waiting for over seven hours to meet the man. I did not want to be humiliated like this and I left. I will soon start a studio that will give newcomers, talented music directors and singers a platform to record numbers free of cost.

          Link – http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/music/news-and-interviews/Ill-never-sing-for-SRK-again-Abhijeet/articleshow/12492167.cms

[To some extent his point is valid about end segments of OSO and MHN even featuring spot boys but not the singers.Anyway, his frustration against singers of non-Indian origin is obsessive!First Pakistani singers and now even Akon pisses him off! Who’s this music director he’s talking about? Is it ARR he’s trying to refer to?]

New agneepath had some forgettable and sme obnoxious moments..
Nearly got beaten up by some females for taking em to THIS movie
But certain sequences did point out (only on retrospect to me) a certain ‘grasp’ of mainstream street level bollywood in karan
    Malhotra
Though these are few n far between but some glimpses were there–
    1
The final hand to hand combat between dutt n Hritik was a reminder of a past legacy… ( a ‘wilder’ past)
When Hritik finally physically and literally lifts dutt, did get reminded of a previous schoolboy ish vibe…guilty pleasure

    2
The AtoZ of mainstream ‘playing to the gallery’ heroine acts
    Chikni chameli
    To
    Gunguna
-easy to class these as ‘ low brow’. , ‘crass’ etc and self-certify oneself as a ‘class’ audience
But as always-wont indulge in all this

Esp coming from katrinas background, the effort, spirit and effervescence was there to see

About ‘gun guna’–a class act by perhaps the best allround actress currently
The restrained nuance and tomfoolery without going OTT reminded me of Madhuri.

Finally Hritik -kept grappling with his character well into the second half
But then towards the end , like his character, Hritik reclaimed himself
He didn’t get massacred in comparison to the gr8 bachchan here –that itself is the biggest success

    ‘Timing’ in Bollywood songs

Now have been a fan of ‘timing’ in songs
Some actors possess it and even they, get it right only in certain phases in their careers
    Difficult to explain
Got onto this point when trying to put forward the brilliance of Priyanka in gun guna

Here to me, she looks relatively unattractive and her styling etc leaves a lot to be desired
But her talent and timing supersedes all that
The subtle mastery over nuance is probably indicative of things to come from her in the future ( if doesn’t mess up her career like rani)

Talking of ‘timing’-two of the brilliant spontaneous exponents, I think are–
If there is a curriculum based course on song picturisations and ‘timing’, bachchan (@ his peak) kept the cake (&ate it too)
A song worth putting up as ‘gold standard’

Know this film and songs are not his most loved , but there was an element of srks unique trademark ‘timing’
    Crispness& fluidity of motion
    Bread n butter SRK essentials

    • alex- on priyanka,i completely agree.she makes ‘gunguna’ her own.i believe she is one of the finest and most spontaneous actresses in contemporary bwood. in ag.path, she was brilliant in a thankless role;way better than madhavi in the original. i loved her in aitraaz, what’s ur rashi, don, saat khoon maaf and kaminey(where she was the scene-stealer;she got the marathi accent spot-on)

Thought gowariker made a good film
And the various roles played by PC displayed an exquisite range…
I’m surprised the movie tanked SO badly and PCs act went unnoticed …
Still something seems to be ‘holding her back’-she has the acting /dancing /emoting skillset just right
Maybe it is the ‘looks’ department ?

But not sure why I’ve tried to start watching his films (on telly only) only to change the channel soon

Just that his reputation intimidates me

And would prefer ANYTHING from (a favourite) anurag kashyap than vishal
My apathy towards his work (&music) remains a mystery even to me

There’s a certain “look @ me” vibe (though all these types of makers have it)

The only film of his I feel like watching is perhaps something he adapted from ruskin bond

          And his music
If one drains or squeezes out all melody and charm from rahmans music BUT let’s it remain ‘different’ it may sound like
          Poor vishals music!!!

But I do agree that I’m passing judgments too soon (without seeing much of his works)–but that’s not a new ‘sin’ for me 🙂

        • I loved Kaminey as well- Priyanka was great- I usually find her very hard to relate to because she looks so cosmetic- so her deglamorized avatar in Kaminey really worked for me- on the other hand she really annoyed me in Agneepath.

I also thought that Shahid Kapoor was very convincing in Kaminey- his best performance by far- I think that he has a lot of potential- he needs to work with the right directors and accept interesting roles.

I wouldn’t call Kaminey a masterpiece- Tarantinoesque films are too much of a cliche- and this wasn’t original enough to rise above the cliche- but it was very well-made and great fun. And Vishal Baradwaj’s use of music in his films is always genius- plus he is one of the very few filmmakers in Bollywood who knows how to use seriocomic humor effectively- and that is my favourite kind.

        • Maqbool is my favorite Baradwaj film- now that really was a masterpiece- even while adapting the work of a writer as iconic as Shakespeare, Baradwaj managed to retain his own voice. And Pankaj Kapoor and Tabu were brilliant as well.

  13. A rugged action movie starring two decrepit looking 50-ish men? You know what- Bollywood should make a film like Expendables- except starring a bunch of men under 35. The biggest novelty at this point would be to see a Bollywood movie with a male ensemble cast that doesn’t have receding hairlines or prominent wrinkles.

I know this makes me sound really ageist- it’s not that I have anything against the older guys or receding hairlines- many of my favourite actors are over 40- but it’s getting a little preposterous the way Bollywood is absolutely dominated by these middle aged men- and it’s not like they are all aging well and accepting age-appropriate roles either.

Do we really need to see Sanjay groping Kangana and Lisa in Rascals or SRK ‘romancing’ Katrina and Anushka in London Ishq or playing a super cool superhero in Ra.One? I liked Sanjay in the Munnabhai movies and SRK in Chak De and Swades- and I am happy to see them onscreen as long as they accept roles that suit them- and as long as there are an equal amount of younger actors in the movies as well.

We desperately need some new, promising YOUNG actors in Hindi cinema.

    • ami- i will disagree with u for the first time(please don’t mind, i would have let this go but u have pricked a very sensitive nerve here). yes, i completely second ur point that we need more of the younger lot. but regarding expendables kinda deal, it has do be done with sanjay and their lot.ami,i maybe wrong but i do not think u have seen much of sanjay’s work or the work of most of the actors of his generation.the thing is dutt, akshay, sunny and suniel were the original action heroes.

      • Haha- of course you can disagree with me. I’m sure that Sanjay Dutt was great back in the day- but he looks extremely decrepit these days- he is excellent for roles like the villainous one he played in Agneepath- but seeing him as a hero alongside actresses who are 30 years younger than him is a bit much for me to digest.

BTW- by Expendables I do not mean a film similar to the raw 80s style action of the Expendables- what I mean is that The Expendables was a novelty because you got to see older actors you wouldn’t see kicking ass in an action film- similarly in Bollywood it would be a huge novelty to see a bunch of young men onscreen together.

I don’t mean that the current young actors should become action heroes. I said that we desperately need promising new entrants as far as male Bollywood actors go. For example Vidyut Jamwal was fantastic in Force- but no one has given him a single role after that. At least for second lead roles- producers and directors should cast some talented new faces instead of going back to the same few old men. SRK’s actually damn good doing action. He looks confident and he plays his emotions just right. For example, if we take an action scene from Don 2 and compare it to an action scene from something like One 2 Ka 4, one can clearly see the difference of expressions based on the kind of characters the two are and the body language is very different.

This is possibly the only wartime adventure set in a movie theatre for such an extended duration, with 35-mm nitrate film as one of the primary weapons of mass destruction. This is film-love taken to its unapologetic apotheosis. Even when Pitt and Co. break a renowned Nazi-killer out of jail, the language is pure movie-language. “We just wanted to say we’re a big fan of your work… I think you show great talent. And I pride myself on having an eye for that kind of talent. But your status as a Nazi killer is still amateur. We all come here to see if you wanna go pro.” (This could be a forties’ director speaking to the ingénue he wants to groom into a star.) That’s the reason, more than anything else, we celebrate Tarantino. You think this is going to be just another variation on The Dirty Dozen, perhaps cheekier, gorier, funnier – but little else. What you don’t expect is a near-profound meditation on movie-love, from a director who’s quite possibly unrivalled, today, in his love for the movies.

  17. tony- dude can’t thank u enough for posting this review.(i think on films, our tastes do match a bit). this review is itself so much like tarantino’s films- it does not forget to have fun with itself while describing the film. u know tarantino once said”i never went to a film school, i went to films.” on basterds, i have one thing to say-tarantino twists history like only he can, while twisting it he has so much fun as if a dominatrix is twisting a sub’s balls, and only he can get away with such an act.

  18. Agneepath has brought dutt back in the reckoning, one need to see the fantabulous crowd reaction in the theatres to truly understand this…..how long he will last is once again dependent upon his script sense which was never his strong point.

dutt & sunny >>>>> All the action stars post BigB & Dharam Paaji.

Hope some how Sunny also stages a comeback (the chances are extremely remote though)

  22. Exit Anil, Enter Dutt

After portraying Kancha Cheena in Agneepath, Sanjay Dutt has come clser to the Karan Johar camp. Even then, it comes as a surprise to see him take over Anil Kapoor’s role as an investigative cop in Dharma Production’s next to be directed by Rensil D’Silva.

A source informed Mirror, “Sanjay Dutt heard the script on Wednesday and gave his nod not only because he liked his role of a cop but also because he can’t say no to Karan Johar.”

Apparently, Kapoor had been finalised for the role but opted out because he felt he was playing one too many cops, the reference being to Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala. The buzz though is that the actor found his role wasn’t substantial enough, especially when compared to Emraan Hashmi’s in the film. Our source said, “Rensil’s film is about a cop hunting down Emraan and his gang, whose shenanigans occupy impressive footage.”

Rensil D’Silva, who urgently needed a 40-plus superstar, personally requested KJo to step in and bail him out of the tight spot. Karan approached Dutt, who agreed to play the part. Surprisingly, Dutt and Kapoor may be pals in real life but they are also fierce competitors when it comes to roles. Dutt and his business manager refrained from comment.

Plato’s Belief in the Soul and True Philosophy

The first principle of Plato’s philosophy was the recognition of the existence of the soul. From there, Plato followed the edict of Socrates: if the soul of man exists and is immortal, then the soul has always been immortal; therefore, the soul has always existed, right from the beginning of Time (if Time can be conceived as having a beginning at all). From this simple premise, Socrates and Plato developed their model of the soul’s origin and destiny.

  30. Dutt, given decent footage, will overshadow practically anyone of the new generation in an action thriller. And even among the elder generation, he is one of the very best there. He will most probably end up being the show stealer in an action thriller with SRK.

As for an Expendables kind of deal with the likes of Imran, Ranbir, better let’s forget about it. Imagining Imran with a 50 calibre machine gun should be the most hilarious scene of the decade. Better get them in some Dil Chahta hain kind of deal.

  38. Dutt is another of those vastly underrated actors. Naam, Kabzaa, Sadak, Khalnayak, Hathyar, Vaastav, the Munnabhai series.. he was awesome in these films. Bhatt certainly was one director who could bring the best out of him.

He was on the brink of taking over the number 1 slot post Mr Amitabh Bachan when his career went haywire following his arrest.

He had signed movies from the most prestigious banners but most of them was shelved after that.

An actor with an excellent comic timing and who excels in action dramas (and I am not talking only about underworld movies here), it’s quite unfortunate when at times you get the impression that he doesn’t get his due.

I think the Agneepath initial had a lot to do with him. He had a left a tremendous impact in the trailers and the movie created most of its pre-release hype through the Dutt persona of Kancha Cheena.

  39. cumpletely agreed kev. his personal problems pulled him down. bachchan, in 1992, had himself annouced dutt as the heir to his throne.and thanks that u mentioned the word action-he was brilliant at action/stunts in sanjay gupta’s ‘aatish’.also he did amazing comedy in ‘thanedaar'(ate up jeetendra).and just in his 2nd film ‘vidhaata’, he held his own against dileep saab.after ag.path,he has interesting films lined up.one is ‘department’- a cop drama with ramu.other is zila ghaziyabad, where he is again a cop

Shah Rukh Khan to be banned for life from entering Wankhede

Bollywood actor and Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan is to be banned by Mumbai Cricket Association from entering the Wankhede Stadium for life following an altercation he had on Tuesday night with security and officials of the association.

“He (Khan) misbehaved and abused the MCA security personnel as well as MCA officials, including our president Vilasrao Deshmukh, after the IPL match (between KKR and Mumbai Indians). We have decided to ban him for life from entering the stadium in future,” MCA treasurer Ravi Savant said.
