Saw this and it is not all that bad (and is vastly better than Don 2) though quite redundant. The political angle (which is pretty similar to Scarface, the film’s 1st half is almost a rip-off of the De Palma film) which tries explain Don’s origins works in a weird sort of way. Ajith is fine here but he was better in Mankatha which was a much superior film (and possibly my fav Tamil masala film since Ghajini). The film has some damn good fight scenes and visuals though

I haven’t seen Don 2 — is Billa 2 based on that, or is it a different story?

Q, Billa 2 is supposed to be a ‘prequel’ to Billa i.e. it will be abt how this simple Tamil guy became a Don

I’m not an Ajith fan, but he is pretty effective in negative-tinged roles. I thought he made a far more menacing Don than SRK.

Yeah but this too misses the point. It tries to fill in the gaps where the Don myth works precisely because there’s no ‘history’ here.
Having said that I do agree that Ajith’s Billa was otherwise way more enjoyable than SRK’s Don even though I didn’t like the film otherwise.
