  1. I was anticipating a more *DHAMAKEDAAR* trailer, but, it’s only a small 30 second teaser of the ACTUAL FILM. Regardless, the first teaser looks decent as a first teaser!
    Rahman’s music is really engaging.
Also, a couple of the shots, I find really good. One being the chopper shot with the motorcycle. Secondly, the one where they’re walking with their hands around each other and the camera just lifts up smoothly.
But, as far as thinking like an average film goer, I’d say it’s not a bad teaser!

  9. SRK-Katrina’s film promo not with ETT
By Bollywood Hungama News Network ,Aug 15, 2012 – 10:40 hrs IST
    #

Contrary to rumours making the rounds, Shah Rukh Khan’s next will not be showcased with Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger.

“This isn’t a decision that has been taken overnight, it was always the plan”, informs our well placed source, “Neither is there any promo being attached nor would the film’s title be revealed.”

This would indeed be heart breaking for those who were expecting that the lid would be finally off the suspense surrounding the film. It also raises question around the rumours making rounds for last few days.

“Well, there is a promo being attached but it is more as a homage showreel of Yashji’s achievements over the decades and the various films that have been made”, adds an insider.

The only incentive would be a very brief glimpse of the Shah Rukh starrer that would be included in the showreel.

“That doesn’t even qualify as a teaser, leave aside the promo. For that you would have to wait for a few more days”, our source adds.

Guess the wait only gets longer.

  10. Beyond the montage of past achievements, the teaser is amazingly bland. So generic in fact, I don’t think it is actually “untitled” as such – because why kid themselves? Something as on the nose as “A Yash Chopra Romance” is exactly appropriate.

    The good parts –

Katrina Kaif (beauty); Anushka Sharma (beauty + 80% talent); a visa-hassle free visit to London for the audience

    The worst parts (fear?)

Yash Chopra’s future; SRK carrying a violin and the film

    The most unintelligent part –

Nov 13 – This ‘Anamika’ releases

    Nov 30 – TALASH releases!!!

But Lol @ all the fun about the ‘old man’ and his ‘daughters’
    But lets analyse this —
One has a certain khan cavorting across with a younger katrina being a tiger!
Another is gearing up to woo katrina followed by an even younger anushka in hiranis film!!
In the meanwhile a rowdy kumar dances around with an even younger (though heavier) sonakshi.. With not much ‘protest’…
But here comes a ‘teaser’ of the third khan with the same..
And suddenly the ‘old man’ jokes abound.
Incidentally what makes this ‘contrast’ in the repsonse here even more interesting is thag all three khans are nearly the same age & the kumar isn’t much younger !!

    • This doesn’t require explanation especially since your comment is more targeted against the predictability of certain responses here. Which is of course quite predictable on your part. But in any case, and for the record, every single one of these guys seems out of place when cast against certain actresses. This has forever been the case in Indian cinema. But to state the painfully obvious, there are some contexts/genres where this mismatch becomes more glaring than others, and a Yashraj-type romance is foremost among them. SRK has been in the romance game for longer than anyone else – it’s the genre that defines his icon. But it’s also a genre that can be the most merciless when it comes to one’s age. Especially when one is essentially doing what one has done since 1995. The Yashraj montage with DTPH doesn’t help matters – after all you don’t quite look the same prancing around with a pair of young women on your arm nearly two decades later!

      2. Other posters agree indeed many of his contemporaries do the same- Alex will say why are people picking on the present generation BW actors when historically as well things were the same, points out he’s ‘open’, checks himself out in the mirror and smiles.

Sorry, but, where I live, SRK’s Don 2 was a highly awaited movie, while there really is no hype for ETT. BUT, in NO WAY am I gonna deny that Salman’s star power is higher in India than that of SRK.

As per superheroes, that was not the point of the movie lol. The whole point was to bring never-before used technology to India, which he did very successfully. So NOW, it’s up to the filmmakers to try and utilize the technology along with good storytelling (which RA.One wasn’t…but, I’m sure if SRK makes RA.One – 2, he wouldn’t make the same mistake)!

  21. I am hardly a SRK admirer but must say these age-insensitive jokes (be they by anyone) are really unnecessary.

The film is a team-work; why pick on just SRK? Everybody is working within a system. This age-difference has existed since the days of Dilip-Saira; Amitabh-Manisha and now 3Khans – all

Yash Chopra and the team knew very well SRK’s age before conceiving the product. If they are hell-bent on making SRK do the same stuff all over again, the issue is with them. And then with the public that STILL will make the movie a hit – paving way for many such sanitized 21st century LOLITAS…

Frankly, what is the problem if there is age difference? Philosophically, who are we to stop 50 year old people from loving 25 year old people? That should not be an issue. The issue is only when a person with a sagging-jowl tries to pass off as a college student….and that, again, goes back to the conceptualization.

The root cause should be attacked – not the symptoms…

    Like

  22. I dont believe in political correctness like An Jo or shameless pandering like Alex I find the guitar strumming, trying to be oh-so-cool persona of SRK cringeworthy. The whole set up sounds stale and laughable. Aamir as a college student was far more believable and enduring. The problem with SRK is he looks his age and there doesnt seem amything new. Salman,Aamir,Akshay are able to pass off as younge.
A 50 year old is certainly allowed to romance a 25 year old. But, if he tries to pass off as a 25 year old and look laughable in the process, is certainly going to invite ridicule. To cal this age insensitivity is missing the point.

    Like

    • LOL, not for a second did I believe that Aamir looked like a college student! That was not Aamir’s problem…it was just a horrible job by the make up artist!
Salman’s skin is really starting to become more and more dry and it’s highly noticeable in ETT.
Shahrukh’s age is also really starting to show, of course, but, when you’re not judging the other stars, stop judging him! πŸ™‚

      Like

    • Where in this teaser do you find SRK cringeworthily old? He is hardly there for 4-5 seconds; and in those seconds, he does not look old at all – whether it is photo-shopping or trick cinematography or whatever; but in THIS teaser, he does not look old. It is the mental make-up we have that SRK is 47 that is making everybody come up with the ‘old’ age statements. Everybody knows his age at the back of his or her mind – and these statements are a result of that. You were okay with Aamir Khan passing of as a 19 year old student but not with SRK? As per your rationale, you are judging based on how the actor successfully hides his age and looks, right? Then SRK in this teaser should pass of quite healthily.

Why did the great Hirani want AK in 3 idiots? Why couldn’t he go for an actor that is ‘truly’ young? For all VVC’s big-mouth talk of making ‘sincere’ films & not believing in ‘stars’, he lapped on to the idea of a huge initial what with Hirani’s MBBS legacy and AK’s Ghajini success. So even people that claim are ‘different’ are still on the same bandwagon. And YRF is also on that bandwagon. So to make fun of SRK for his age is really trying to cut off the nose to prevent a running one. Every major star including Ajay Devgan, Akshay, the 4 Khans are hopping along with heroines in their 20s.

The whole issue boils down to the fact that ‘casting’ is not at all a concern in our films. In Hollywood, you would NEVER see Robert Downey Jr – however brilliant an actor he maybe – playing Lincoln; and you would NEVER see Daniel Day-Lewis playing Chaplin. When was the last time you saw Tom Cruise play a love-lorn guy? The closest was in Jerry Maguire way back in 1996. Since then, even though he has beenlooking smashingly good, he has stuck to thrillers, dramas, period films, and pure actioners.

The rot, then, is in the system. Aamir Khan is as much guilty of this as is SRK. Performance is another issue – and not a parameter here. In that sense, Anurag Kashyap is the only person who has managed to make GOW without a major star; however, let me also add that paradoxically, it is/was quite an easy decision to do that owing to the subject matter! Star-actors in the movie would actually have been rendered redundant!!
But by going ahead with Ranbir in BV, he has definitely shaken my belief. I can only wait and watch whether the decision was perfect or a sign of weakness…

I am not trying to be politically correct my friend – I am just an equal opportunity offender…

      Like

      • I don’t think SRK is looking significantly older than most of his contemporaries, and I wouldn’t really call him out for this. As a general matter though, I do feel that slimmer people tend to have more lined faces as they age, and SRK probably suffers on that count more than Salman, who has a “broader” face. Second, for better or worse, in the action genre people tend to mind these things less than in the love story genre. That’s not a point of principle, simply an observation.

I remember people always making fun of South Indian movies based on a stereotype that they featured aging heroes with nymphets, but Bollywood is no better (leaving aside SRK, Aamir, Salman, Akshay, let’s not forget the even older likes of Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt.

And agree with Ann jo that SRK doesn’t look as old as being ripped apart for –infact couldn’t even make out (unlike some others) if he was looking old or young …
    Some ‘conventional’ London scenery …
    But
As usual what caught my attention was the budding music score
I have heard only once and was only for a couple of seconds
But I thought I heard a bit of rabbi shergill

Even the guitar chords of this ‘theme music’ has an unmistakable ‘rabbi tinge’-Rahman has been magnanimous while collaborating…

Folks check out some lyrics of bulla ke that I got translated just now from the net to understand better
Also for sufi lovers like anjali …

    English translation of lyrics—

“Not a believer inside the mosque, am I
Nor a pagan disciple of false rites
Not the pure amongst the impure
    Neither Moses, nor the Pharoh

Not in the holy Vedas, am I
Nor in opium, neither in wine
    Not in the drunkard`s craze
Niether awake, nor in a sleeping daze

In happiness nor in sorrow, am I
Neither clean, nor a filthy mire
Not from water, nor from earth
Neither fire, nor from air, is my birth

    Not an Arab, nor Lahori
    Neither Hindi, nor Nagauri
    Hindu, Turk (Muslim), nor Peshawari
Nor do I live in Nadaun

Secrets of religion, I have not known
From Adam and Eve, I am not born
I am not the name I assume
Not in stillness, nor on the move
I am the first, I am the last”

Total rubbish. Stale as yesterday’s bread. Another Teri Meri Kahani in the offing, albeit with a better initial.

I mean the whole thing look so phony and contrived! Every single frame has ‘ Expiry Day: Yesterday’ written all over it!

And that cringe-worthy poetry, whoever wrote it, is such a lame attempt at reprising Silsila’s ‘ Main Aur Meri Tanhai’

But I can’t even pity Shahrukh. If he is bent upon promoting the mediocrity of a writer like Aditya Chopra, he deserves what is coming.

    • LOL ..

It seems Time has stopped for Yrf… just little bit jiggle here and there, chiffon saree with mini mini shorts, 2 flowers embracing with 2 bodies now… main aur meri tanhai with silly silly pathetic poem and narration…

Old habits Die hard – this trailer is example of that as far as Yrf is concerned

      Like

      • Excellent point Bliss- making his heroines wear shorts and filming intimate scenes alone is not enough to make the stale YRF recipe interesting again. This entire film looks dreadfully anachronistic.

And the forced sexiness looks es[ecially contrived amidst all of the typical YRF trademarks like the sweeping shots of mansions/fields and the saccharine poetry- I mean, WTF is that scene with Katrina and SRK in the telephone booth?

This film looks like it is going to be an absolutely terrible combination of sappy-meets-sleazy.

        Like

        • Ami, I agree with everything apart from this being sleazy. From the trailer, it seems that lovemaking scenes have been aesthetically shot. But in anycase if u found this sleazy, then it’s not the 1st time Yash Chopra has done this- in his Farha and Rohan Kapoor starrer Faasle there was a very famous lovemaking scene. Also if i remember in Darr there is a scene in a hotel room where Juhi seduces Sunny

          Like

        • agreed.. sleazy it isn’t.

          Like

        • I didn’t mean that this film looks sleazy in the same way as a Bhatt production- I meant that it’s sleazy in the sense that the brand of ‘sexiness’ in the film doesn’t work at all for me- it’s so obvious that the heroine’s costumes and the intimate scenes are inserted here only to make the film (and the hero!) look ‘fresh’, modern and cool. And it’s not just the intimacy aspect that fails- even the scenes with Anushka blowing a dandelion and Katrina teasing SRK and pulling his cheeks completely fail to conjure up the intended picture of carefree/ playful young love.

On a side note- if YRF is trying to create a classic, tasteful romance the least they can do is to hire a stylist who will make the actresses look elegantly alluring. I haven’t seen Barfi yet- but I think that whoever styled Illeana did a fantastic job in that respect. On the other hand, that outfit where Katrina pairs a cropped leather jacket with a cropped top, a short skirt and boots is easily the tackiest example of layering that I have ever seen!

          Like

  33. Rather uninspiring trailer though I will say it would have been better with someone other than Katrina. She drags it down even further. Also I think the corny lines spoil it. The score is the best part here not surprisingly. One can’t even say that the trailer is business as usual for Yashraj and stale in this sense. The bigger issue here is it’s rather flat.

      • Yes. And the Shahid Khan segment channels the spirit of this moment exquisitely well. It’s by far the best thing in the entire film to my mind. Satyam once said that Gulaal lost a good bit of its energy once Abhimanyu Singh was dispatched. I’d say the same for this actor in GOW, and unfortunately this happens fairly early on in the movie!

        Like

        • Agreed.think Shahid Khan’s character, by dying ,became a sort of ‘mythical figure’ whose shadow keeps lurking over the rest of the film (on the other hand excellent as Bajpai was, his demise had no such effect for me)- actually this figure provided the much needed gravity and juice to the film which sometimes felt bogged down due to Kashyap’s over-insistence on getting the lingo and ambience right- his death pushed the film in a masala/Leone like world which isn’t tied down by stuff as boring as realism

Had a quick look- and some of the posts here by the usual suspects could have been written down even before reading them! πŸ™‚
    Again-will differ as usual!
    Had mixed feelings-
It is predictable, cliched and expected with no ‘novelty’!
But the other question is– what WERE sane individuals expecting from this team in this subject and cast?
It’s like me going onto the threads of SOTY, SOS and YPD– ridiculing them (which I do actually) but the point is that this is expected of them!
One doesn’t need to prove ones own ‘higher taste’ to prove this.
I will discount cute Amy from this since she has some genuine points here esp on styling and if I remember correctly, Amy employed the same standards onto talash and criticised it!
But what will one say to those who saw Aamirs ‘making out with prostitute Kareena’ , growling over a junior, dashing around in police uniform in moustache and rani ‘drowning’ with a kid and declared it to a ‘non mainstream offbeat stuff’ (agree that the treatment is slightly different though!)
So let’s not get carried away folks!
Ps: unlike others-I liked the introduction of ‘shorts’–in keeping with the times
Also the ‘telephone booth shenanigans’ arent bad!
When relatively free–this spoof should be a good one πŸ™‚

    • Even on stale terrain a better trailer than this could have been made. In fact this whole line of argument is suspect ‘hey what did you expect’?! It’s not as if some of us saw a Houseful trailer and thought it was bad. There this sort of question would apply. But not here. And taking your logic they could have made anything quite literally and you’d say ‘what did you expect?’! And note the contradiction in your claim. According to you Yashraj are so low that one shouldn’t expect anything. This is more or less your defense of the trailer!

Leaving aside whether one is a fan of SRK or Aamir, love stories or thriller, anyone who doesn’t think the Talaash trailer was miles ahead of this one needs their head examined. One can still be a fan of love stories and so on and still prefer to watch the Yashraj. But in any objective sense there’s not even a comparison between the two.

And once again I was expecting a stale trailer from Yashraj but they’ve come up with something pretty flat which is surprising.

      • Satyam– theres only a limit to what one can do in Bollywood romantic films of this genre ESP when one goes into high budget terrain!
When the stakes and production values go above a certain level, as a producer u just cannot take certain risks knowingly!
In my upcoming spoof on tnis I shall take u through this step by step in since I declare u the producer (Also so u will see these points fist hand then!)
U change things here — u get the bo verdicts of kank, nishabd and lamhe!
There is apparently still a market for such stuff –but even I’m curious to see how much it has changed.
This film should be test case to answer this question!
Talash maybe a different genre and as i said- the talaash promo was much better than this one (& one that I personally liked a lot!)
But it wasn’t the ‘cutting edge non mainstream serious off beat’ label or any of that permutation that some are marketing it to be –that’s the point!

Romance genre’s main strengths need to be the hero, how well it’s shot and the songs and I think those are covered very well in this movie.
Talaash will be the only movie giving competition to this film, but, so far JTHJ > Talaash (from the two big trailers).

JTHJ teaser/trailer is nice but way too long! If they shortened it to half the length it would have had more impact.

    • this is ‘similar’ the way tons of scores are similar. Don’t see any too deep link here though the opening of the trailer looked out of a road film! Rahman might well have thought of such a cue in this sense. But again the Motorcycle diaries strain is hardly the most distinctive one either.

2 things abt Jab Tak Hai Jaan u prob didnt know: at some point in the film, SRK loses his memory. At some point, he’s a waiter in London.

uhhh… so SRK/Aditya Chopra avenge Ghajini by going Ghajini

The trailer is a little underwhelming, and too bad they chose to go with poetry instead of rahman…but it also means the next trailer featuring the songs is guaranteed to be better

    • so he’s an army guy, there’s an explosion, he loses his memory, they probably think he’s dead, he ends up in London, falls for another girl, eventually the past comes back. Note how Yash Chopra both in VZ and presumably here also seems to be falling victim to a certain impulse which truthfully was there even in Kabhi Kabhie (no matter how different that film might have been from these contemporary efforts_ — much as I said about Jha in Aarakhshan elsewhere he too asserts the ‘legendary’ quality of the love story and the ‘epic’ scale and ‘timelessness’ of the romance without ever showing us how and why it is this! Because otherwise the characters are busy inhabiting the same old Yashraj universe. In Kabhi Kabhie similarly the script did not quite match the poetry. Bachchan irons over this in his usual way and of course the Kapoors are charming here, the women are fine, Waheeda has a great performance.. all in all the actors deliver but the story doesn’t. Still that was a mature film. In these latter day efforts you have the same old teenybopper stuff masquerading as ‘epic love story’. And of course this infantile audience doesn’t mind it either. Having said all this I do expect a better film than VZ which was tiresome and the truly awful RNBDJ (which a lot of women liked and some men like Rocky did too by pretending they were into it for their spouses!).

Incidentally I heard the score a couple of times more. It’s easily the best thing about the trailer.

is it 1962 already? oh, its london, not kashmir, so i guess it’s 2012. and i don’t expect it to be any better than vz or rnbdj, probably even worse.

      • “Incidentally I heard the score a couple of times more. It’s easily the best thing about the trailer.” – eventually that might be the savior for this film satyam which otherwise looks insipid from the trailer. I would very unhappy if I don’t see YR of Chandni and Lamhe here…don’t feel like blaming SRK because this is the only genre which has worked for him bigtime….there is no question of discussing abt. his script-sense etc. (how pathetic it is we know from his own productions) – and with YR, he never discusses the script – it is known. So die-hard SRK fans will lap it up, ARR fans will be forced to watch it, Gulzar’s charm still remains intact – so that is one more reason to go watch and at the end of the day: Indian audience have very little choice for a good or entertaining cinema – so they are now in a habit of lapping up most big budget films starring any of the 3 khans…..so this will do 100 cr+ no doubts – but will YR ever make any film after this???

But how can I venture to go into a theater, if that godawful poetry remains in the film.? Aditya might be a cynical egotist, but how could Yashji allow anyone to mkae a travesty of his wonderful . ” Main aur Meri Tanhai’?

Forget the bad imagery, even the lines are in metre and a wrong word is used just for the sake of rhyming , just because Aditya’s vocabulary is limited to perhaps jujst 100 words or so.
” ..nahin bhoolounga mein and …nahin maf karoongan mein”

And what is ‘ tera haath se mera hath chodna’? Shouldn’t it be ‘ chhutna’?

Juts because Aditya cant find another word to rhyme with ‘ modna”?

THen ‘ … nahin bhoolonga mein’ and ‘ …nahin maaf karoonga main’ have different number of syllables and don’t even rhyme properly.

‘ nahin maaf karoonga mein’ is areal lame line anyway.

And what is this ‘ tera saayonka’? How many shadows does a person have? it is ‘ Mera Saaya’ and nort ‘ Mera Saayon’ right?

I can take any bet this is not written by Gulzar. He has not turned senile yet.

    Like

    • I’m not expressing my opinion of the poem – just an understanding of the lines.

      >β€˜ tera haath se haath chhodna”.

In this case the complete phrase “haath se haath chhodna’ is a noun. It is better understood in English where the gerund represents the verb. *your leaving of the hand*

It’s like tera + any gerund (tera jaana, tera muskurana, instead of teri muskurahat)
So, your problem here is your insistence on using a verb. This use of gerund is common in poetry.

      This song has some examples

      >tera saayon
It’s the same problem as the previous one, also the plural seems to confuse you.

If you take the complete line it makes sense.
      “tera saayon ka rukh modna”
tera + saayon ka rukh modna

More than one shadow perhaps denotes that her turning away from him (to go away?) puts their *shadows* facing in opposite directions.

      >THen β€˜ … nahin bhoolonga mein’ and β€˜ …nahin maaf karoonga main’ have different number of syllables and don’t even rhyme properly.

Not getting into details of haiku, alternative rhyming etc here, but he seemed to have taken a 1st line =4th line syllable way
      7-8-9-7
Yes, sounds more like a lyrical/serious limmerick

      @Tonymontana
In these days of Hinglish to mostly English, an attempt at writing poetry in an easyily understandable hindi is laudable.

Leave alone Gulzar’s urdu, even passable hindi becomes difficult to understand for many – as my earlier part of this comment indicates. πŸ˜‰

Urdu in poetry DOES make a poem sound superior (even if it isn’t) – so lets not fall into this trap.

And none of the clips you have posted has the usage ‘ tera haathse haath chhodna’.

I can challenge you to find any in the whole annals of Hindi / Urdu poetry / lyrics.

    • I don’t have the time nor the inclination to get into an argument with you. At first I had thought perhaps the words are confusing you, which can happen to anyone, but I think you ‘want’0 it to be wrong LOL

I’ve spoken hindi all my life and the poem may have struck me as nothing great, but not grammatically wrong.

Haath se haath chhodna only indicates that it is the haath that has been disengaged from another haath.
It could have been Tera haath se baal chhodna, tera haath se baahn chhodna……

If one can say ‘haath mein haath’ why not ‘haath se haath’?

I was just forestalling any argument about chhudana and chhodna where the former is used as ‘pulling away’ and the second as ‘disengaging’.
It turned out to be a leading statement, so I won’t say anything more about it.

‘sayon ka rukh badalna’ is perhaps one line which I find quite poetic in the whole piece.
It could even mean ‘total change in everything’ brought about, thus the plural.
But admirers of genres like GOW and that Deepika/Diana/Saif film couldn’t possibly see anything in this except silliness – which is the norm here for such things, anyway.

I mean if someone says . ‘ I will sent you home’, it is plain wriong even if the speaker is from heart of London.

      • *sigh* People who don’t agree with your opinion on cinema are ‘lids who think they know cinema’, people who don’t agree with your Hindi grammar need to ‘prove that he or she knows the language and its syntax well’ in order to gain the privilege of being taken seriously by you (or else they will be dismissed as a mere ‘street yokel’)- don’t you think that you are becoming a bit dogmatic?

And a mere ‘street yokel’ from London might not be able to match Rushdie/ Ghosh’s literary efforts- but if, say, you had somebody who grew up in East London or Liverpool they will have a more accurate grasp of the colloquial accent/ syntax- and what seems right to them might not seem right to Rushdie.

“You don’t have to use wrong grammar and wrong physics ( tera saayon’) to be accessible.”

Yes- but you also do not have to use the RIGHT grammar in order to write a literary masterpiece. There are plenty of internationally acclaimed, award winning writers who use grammatically incorrect, regional variations of English- Junot Diaz’s Spanglish, for instance and there countless other examples.

        • And for someone who seems to be so rigidly judgmental about grammatic rules- it is ironic that much of your writing could be considered incorrect if interpreted using the same didactic standards that you use to judge other’s use of ‘proper syntax’.

For instance in this very comment you have mangled the idiomatic phrase ‘by the same token’ and instead typed ‘by your token’- now I could use this little niggle in ‘proper syntax’ to dismiss you as someone who cannot speak English properly- but I will not do so because it’s obvious that you are an eloquent writer and you have written some wonderful comments and any minor grammatical errors that you make (like ALL of us do!) do not in anyway take away from that.

        • BTW- I’m not trying to pick on your grammar- my own use of punctuation whilst commenting on this blog is absolutely abysmal, and my comments are full of typos that I am too lazy to correct- so criticizing someone else’s language would be very hypocritical of me. • Saurabh- I did say that Utkal is a good writer- and that I was only pointing out the little error he made to underline how inconsequential this sort of mistake is. But I also think that his recent comments are quite presumptuously dismissive of anybody whose arguments he disagrees with and I don’t think that pointing this out constitutes a ‘childish game’ in any way.

Why don’t you have a problem when Utkal says that most Indian bloggers are lids who wrongly think that they know cinema or when he says that incorrect use of grammar indicates that people have ‘sub-standard minds’ and need to prove themselves? How is anything that I have said any worse that such intellectual snobbery? OG also says that she finds his comments arrogant, why didn’t you say anything about that?

No offence- I’m sure that your defense of Utkal’s comments is well intentioned but I do find it unfair. I’m not annoyed or anything- but I know that you are usually quite impartial- and I am unable to understand why you have a problem with my comments but not his.

I’m not a very fluent Hindi speaker so I’m not going to debate whether this particular usage is correct or not- my problem was with Utkal’s dismissive tone and his insistence that flawless grammar is central to the literary merit of a work.

Sanjana- It’s true that you don’t need to be skilled in something in order to crique it- but when a person insists that being grammatically incorrect indicates a sub-standard mind and that others will have to prove their knowledge of proper syntax to him – it then behoves himto not commit any language errors himself!

BTW- I know I sound like I am hounding Utkal here but that is not what I am trying to do- I disagree with many of his more hyperbolic statements but he does often come up with very informative, passionate comments and I’ve generally found his behaviour on the blog to be gentlemanly- which is why the tone of his recent comments suprises me so much.

Ami: Yes- but you also do not have to use the RIGHT grammar in order to write a literary masterpiece.

    Oh, yes, you do.

There are deliberate breaking of rules of grammar and coinage of new words in literature.every day. Shakespeare has done it. Joyce has done it. But there is a difference between someone who knows the rules and breaks it and someone who does it out of ignorance. It takes someone who knows to differentiate between the two. Many people ignorant of modern art look at a painting of Picasso and say my 7 year old daughter can paint this. No, she can’t. Picasso could draw perfectly realistic human face or body if he wanted to.

Bob Marley can say. No woman, no cry’. Mick Jagger can sing, ” I can’t get no satisfaction’. Gulzar can say, ‘ paani, gila gila paani.” But they know what they are doing and why.

If the poem is in the language of a mistake-prone yokel, there has to be a consistency in the kind of mistakes, making it obvious that the mistakes are deliberate. But you cannot have a poem in the form of a high-sounding classical poem and make some basic mistakes of usage.

Ami again: “..but if, say, you had somebody who grew up in East London or Liverpool they will have a more accurate grasp of the colloquial accent/ syntax- ”

Yes, but this poem is not written in a Liverpool dialect but the Queen’s English.

    • Just to be clear- I am not saying that this poem is a literary masterpiece- it’s quite clearly not. What I was objecting to was your attitude of intellectual snobbery. I was responding to your earlier comment:

β€œYou don’t have to use wrong grammar and wrong physics ( tera saayon’) to be accessible. It just shows what a sub-standard mind Aditya Chopra has got.”

I was simply disputing this, since some great authors and poets have written with a blatant disregard for grammar, so it doesn’t mean you can condemn people as ‘sub-standard minds’ and β€˜mistake-prone yokels’ simply because their language is not flawless.

Aditya Chopra created an enduring, iconic classic with DDLJ. It’s not β€˜high culture’ by any means- but that doesn’t take away from his achievement. He has always spoken in a language of cloying sentimentalism and that is the same tone that he employs in this poem- any pretenses at being classical are purely at the surface so he’s not attempting to write in the Hindi equivalent of Queen’s English as you claim.

He’s not trying to write in the Queen’s English and failing out of ignorance- he is creating a world that is pure Scouser/ Cockney with a superficial dusting of the Queen’s English on top- and this is something that anybody who understands the mechanizations and pretenses of the Indian film audience should be able to see (to rephrase your own comment on how it takes someone who knows to differentiate between the deliberate rule-breakers and the ignorant). I highly doubt that he is so unbelievably ignorant and deluded that he actually thinks that this poem is a marvellous literary effort.

If you accept that it is wrong, but Aditya is using it , then it is another matter. It goes into the area of poetic quality, which is subjective. And I will give my opinion that it is abominably bad.

As per Aditya’s iconic classic DDLJ, I will say it is no such thing. In due course of time it will be known as the contrived mediocrity that all his films are. Let’s not forget he is the man behind such unmitigated crapfest as ‘ Mohabbatein’ and ‘ Rab Ne Ban Di Jodi’. Almost any film of Imtiaz Ali is a better love story than the best of Aditya Chopra.

β€˜ ..he is creating a world that is pure Scouser / cockney..’., you say. Not true. He is not espousing the feelings that are at heart street-smart Bombaiya or rustic Bhojpuri. This is what I meant when I said it’s pure Cockney/ Scouser with a thin facade of the Queen’s English- the street-smart Bombaiya is equivalent to the street smart East Londoner, the rustic Bhojpuri to the Scouser and the the Malabar Hill candfloss folk are the anti-intellectual Chelsea socialites, maybe? πŸ˜› It’s a pretty convulted comparison but I only brought it up to dispute your London street yokel vs. Rushdie point.

“You say DDLJ is an iconic classic. I say, hardly. It is a pretentious mediocrity that will show up in time.”

Whether you appreciate DDLJ or not is your personal opinion- but there is no denying that it is an enormously widely loved film and was extremely influential in 90s Bollywood- and you have to give Aditya Chopra credit for that.

      • Oh sorry- I misread your statement- I will admit that you have a point about him not catering to the street-smart Bombaiya or the rustic Bhojpuri- that was my mistake.

But my other point still stands- it is probably the Malabar Hill elite who have the weakest knowledge of Hindi- and he is merely speaking their language and catering to them! Again- I do not think that this is a result of his ignorance. Pop culture the world over uses slang, colloquialism and grammatical error in order to endear itself to it’s audience. While I agree wth you that this is not the ONLY way to make work accessible to the general audience- it is ONE of the ways to do so.

  86. For an insight into the true craft of poetry at the hihest level, you should take a look at what Vikram seth has just done for absolut.

Meter, rhyme, elegance, imagery, depth, playfulness… it’s all there.

I especially like the play on ‘ piya sa’ meaning ‘ kind of intoxicated’ as well as ‘ like the beloved.’

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/books/Vikram-Seth-paints-a-suitable-bottle/articleshow/16514658.cms

    The green painting
    Hindi/Devanagari – Pyasa Pyala – Shringar rasa

The emerald cup, the music high above,
The dreaming earth, all thirst for hidden love.

The vertical lines, Seth says, “continue into the lines of the musical staff. The ‘pyasa pyala’ itself can be faintly made out in the top left corner.” The words ‘piya-sa’ in the lower left corner of the painting could mean ‘kind of intoxicated’, Seth says, referring to the ‘sleeping’ bottle. Or it could be “‘like the beloved’, referring to the mysterious bottle standing to the side of the solid couple.”

    The red painting
Chinese – Jiu – Vir rasa

The character embraces what is his.
The character embraces what it is.

Jiu, the Chinese character for wine, is bold, almost flamboyant. The seven smaller characters of the colophon, with Seth’s seal below, mean ‘Vikram Seth wrote this in Delhi’.

    The blue painting

Let me make a last ditch attempt to try and explain what is wrong with β€˜ tera haathse haath chhodna’ and β€˜ tera saayon ka rukh modna’.

Firstly, it is not that Aditya does not know what si wrong here. It is just that with his limited abilities, he cannot think of anything better or different to complete his rhyming scheme, and let these remain.
Now as to what is wrong. Some of the explanation is in English because it is pain to type and read Hindi words in Roman script.

    As I said before,

Chhodna’ needs an object. Tum kisi cheez ko chhod sakte ho, kisii chhez se nahin.

Tum ghar chhod sakte ho. Naukri chhod sakte ho. Haath chhod sakte ho.

You are the subject. What you leave is the object. The object can be qualified. For example, Tum koi company ka naukri chhod sakte ho. β€˜ company ka naukri” is the object here. But tum company β€˜se’ naukri nahin chhod sakte ho. Campany se istipha de sakte ho.

The β€˜ se’ is the problem here.

Haath se haath chhut sakt a hai. Haath se haath chhudaaya ja sakta hai. Lekin tum haath se haath chhod nahin sakte ho.

Let’s construct the actual scenario. The boy and the girl are holding hands. The girl disentangles her hands, turns and goes away. The boy looks on. The girl does not turn back to takea look at him.

So what happened. Ladki ne apna haath chhuda ke cali gayee.
Ya ladki ne ladke ka haath chhod diya.

Or, ladke ka haath se ladki ka haath chhut gaya. The implication here being is that the act was not totally a willful action. It happened. Or at least you want to see it that way and don’t want to put the blame on her. Any which way.

But you just cannot say, β€˜ Ladki ne ladke ka haath se haath chhod diya.”

You cannot leave an object β€˜from’ the same object.

Imagine someone saying , β€˜ Maine ghar se ghar chhod diya!”
That is a simply an absurd, logically untenable construction. Be it Cockney or Queen’s English. Be it Bombaiya or chaste Urdu.

Actually while going through the poem again to see if I could find something in Aditya’s defense, I found the translation done by Shahrukh as well. Quite certainly Shahrukh was privy to what Aditya wanted to convey before he undertook to translate the poem and went public with it.

This is how he translates those two lines:

β€˜ Your hand slipping from mine
    Your shadow turning its gaze”

If I have to reverse translate this keeping the key words of Aditya’s original poem in place, it would read ( the bracketed word is implied) :

β€˜ Tera haath ( mera) haath se chhutna
    Tera saaya ka rukh modna’

Please note, the shadow is singular. There are no shadows. And of course the lines don’t rhyme, and that was Aditya’s problem. He could construct the first line differently so that it ended with ‘ chhodna’ while remaining correct in syntax. But he wasn’t up to it. Why bother, when 90% of the target audience won’t even notice? Why bother with perfection?

    I rest my case.

  99. Good song…hope the film is worthwhile as well. I’ve never felt so disinterested in BW- so much so that I’m hoping a YRF romantic with SRK in the lead with Katrina and Anushka will at least go some way toward restoring my faith in it.

The grotesque reality where the BO has become the alpha and omega of a film’s worth is really pitiful. Earlier at least there used to be some sort of distinction, now there isn’t even that pretension- it’s all about 100 cr/200 cr total or opening weekend or whatever. When someone like Salman Khan with his worthless flicks is the reigning deity, it’s time to question that religion!

    Like

    • The worthless getting success started long back. One cant decide what is worthy and what is not worthy. Entertainment is what matters. Cinema is mainly about entertainment. The appeal of the likes of Salman Khan and Rajnikant is due to the fan worship to some extent. And even non -fans try to watch the movie due to all that buzz. Its a win win situation. In this context Barfi’s success is heartwarming but then it is a well made movie with some novelty factor.

Are Yash Chopra’s movies anyway better than Salman’s movies? Thats why even Chopra camp took Salman in ETT.

The people who are making differences without worrying about BO have also an audience and their low budget films gives them a breather in this cutthroat 100 crore mania.

      • Indeed Sanjana, worthless films getting success isn’t a recent phenomenon. IMO what’s recent is that the industry doesn’t even put up a facade that quality matters, it’s all about crores these days- a sort of monomania.

Are Yash Chopra’s movies better than Salman’s? Well I’ll answer this question in a roundabout way. Chopra has at least an incentive to make JTHJ to the best of his abilities. With someone like Salman I get the feeling there is a negative incentive to make ‘good’ films- it’s just a one man circus. His stardom seems to hinge on doing ‘bad’ films- he gets celebrated because he somehow manages to make blockbusters out of what most people agree are ‘worthless’ films.

  101. Like the song a lot. The video is par for the course. There is an unintended irony here. The whole film is being advertised as Yash Chopra’s last and so on but there is also a ‘bathed in nostalgia’ element here when it comes to SRK himself. In a strange sense it almost comes across as the swan song to his own iconic (genre) history. And this is ‘odd’ even in terms of sequencing. Because one saw for so long the SRK who attempted reinvention with Don and Ra One, the one Johar tried to unsuccessfully ‘upgrade’ in KANK and MNIK, the one Aditya Chopra tried to make more ‘rooted’ in RNBDJ. But here it’s back to square one. This kind of deal might have been better some years back inasmuch as it seems to turn the page on a history. But after doing that other stuff in between this ‘return to roots’ has a kind of ‘wistfulness’ about it.

Which incidentally is the ‘note’ SRK was hitting even in that long conversation with Yash Chopra where the latter looked less like the retiree than SRK! Why? Because as Yash Chopra was going through the highlights of his career it was hard not to detect that twinge of envy (or more than this) in SRK. As I’ve always said SRK for all his narcissism has nonetheless been a much smarter guy than his fans and he’s known how to read the tea-leaves. He knows that iconic as his peak period has been, the most so among his generation of stars, and even a bit beyond, he has not been a ‘defining’ the star the way he once might have thought ‘drunk’ in the success of those post-KKHH events and suchlike where he really ran award shows as a private party. He has not had the films and the lines and the moments that will echo through film history. He just doesn’t have a body of work that will mean very much. At best he might have a shelf of ‘classics’ that audiences revisit. Even this isn’t a guarantee. But this is not that bad a fate unless of course one had greater ambitions which SRK decidedly did. At this point it’s not about comparing oneself to the hallmarks of the historical record but also realizing that the game even against one’s peers has not necessarily been won, Aamir being the obvious specter here.

SRK knows all of this. For all his investment in selling the media story he has not been delusional. For any truly ambitious star SRK’s record wouldn’t be enough. Not even close. And SRK has been an ambitious man.

        • There is an expiry date on everything.. you have incidentally defined my ‘nostalgia’ point in different language!

By the way I enjoyed very many of the SRK movies in the 90s. I always say this and I mean it completely seriously but I have never come across a SRK fan on a blog nor do I think I will who has seen more SRK films more times in the theater than I have!

There is a sad but surprising for many truth about time.. you can’t go back… it will never be the 90s again. we are 17 years away from DDLJ, 14 from KKHH. Doesn’t mean you cannot still sell a package and jack up the numbers and so on. But to quote a certain Vijay in Agneepath the past won’t return if you start walking backwards! And again it seems to me you’re not disagreeing with my original comment very much. If this film is a museum for those who loved SRK’s iconic history well that’s precisely what I’m saying! Because by engaging in such an exercise SRK highlights a certain narrative that is not entirely intentional (I think), specially given his other reinvention efforts. It would be one thing if he had done this some years ago and then done Don and so on. This is happening a bit in reverse and it carries the sense of a larger failure of reinvention. What does the audience think? ‘yeah the Don, Ra One stuff didn’t cut it so he’s back to basics’! Even if the film is a big success even the lovers of the film won’t believe this charts a path forward for him. Which too has been my point for a number of years. It’s not the failures but the successes that have failed to mean very much.

          Like

        • The time for re-invention was the early 00’s. The perfect time. As the timing would have broken SRK’s image at the height of his popularity and when his competition was most vulnerable. Aamir was in a hiatus. Salman delivering duds. Hrithik after a promising start struggling with poor choices. SRK had the audiences at his mercy. The opportunity was there to stamp his authority.

Now it’s too late. In fact his best bet now is this type of terrain. Tried and tested, add a Katrina for a β€œnew” factor and the back to basics at least guarantees a very good box office start. The reality is you only return to this terrain to get the box office results. There is nothing β€œcreatively” that can enhance SRK’s career here because he and his audiences have seen it all before. And the biggest thing is his competition is ahead of him and has been for a few years. Not catching up now, just trying to keep up.

    • You speak from your own narrow perspective, Satyam. All these thoughts about SRK trying to “reinvent” himself and how this film is a failure as it goes back to square one are only your personal opinions, not revealed truths. So there’s no point to stating your opinions as though they are verified facts.

I think this film is for those who fell in love with SRK during DDLJ and want to see that “magic” again. Hence the invoking of the iconic gestures and locales from those types of films (I’m including the later SRK romances with both YRF and Dharma which were very successful.) For such people, I think this song and picturization just fill the bill, even SRK’s acting does. People want to see Raj again, and he has given it to them.

SRK used to say in his older interviews that, since he’s not very good looking, he has to “act handsome and sexy.” I think he succeeded in that very well in the early 2000’s. Here he’s also “acting young”, and succeeding in that, too.

For me personally, I think it’s a pity that Yash and Aditya Chopra seem so afraid/unimaginative to break out of that DDLJ mold (much as Karan Johar insists on invoking KKHH each time). They’ve got a more than capable actor, with plenty of charisma, why not give him a different role that could become a new icon? So I blame the makers far more than SRK here.

Blame them both. SRK does not have to do the film if it does not fit in with becoming a “new icon” theory. The problem as an entertainer SRK has here is his obligation or his “need” to continue to do films for those who have supported him without looking at the scripts. It’s clearly a nice gesture and of course a “nice thing to do” but ultimately and creatively its quite foolish.
Clearly SRK owes some of his stardom to Chopra’s/Johar’s but they too have made an awful lot of moolah off SRK’s attachment. I guess its a win win for them but really with SRK’s clout in the past he could have scripted a much better path to success.
This constant “aping” of DDLJ is nauseating. The film is some 17 years old now! It’s magic was and is still visible at most weddings! To re-create, to create or invent something similar is impossible. History does not repeat itself that way. For one, its been tried by SRK himself. DTPH, KKHH, K3G, V-Z, Mohabbatein etc are incarnations of the same vice. But none matched DDLJ.
For all the attempts, by the same folk, maybe evolving SRK into something more real on screen, instead of the foolhardy fantasy of a 20 something year old is a better option. Aditya had a decent idea in half of RNBDJ. Or even someone like Aziz Mirza had a better attempt in Chalte Chalte where at least you had a deglamorised version of a marital split then the one you get in KANK.
Ranbir would have been better suited here. In fact would have made a lot more sense.

He’s had many strengths as a director but he’s for decades been behind the curve when it comes to understanding where a star is in his career. Put differently he’s still interested in somewhat off-peak stars (even if they are great stars) when the ‘market’ clearly signals in other directions. But I do agree that SRK could certainly have insisted on a strong script here and something more different on this terrain. Even if it’s hard to come up with a radically different script at least the visuals shouldn’t seem as ‘been there done that’ as they do here. In one sense though it’s not surprising. SRK has always claimed not to have been a fan of the love stories. He even said he never believed in DDLJ. He went along for the ride for the obvious box office reasons but I doubt he’s ever changed his mind about them. If you have overall less respect for a genre you’re not likely to think too much of distinctions within the genre. It’s like those who don’t like masala think all masala films are the same. The big missed opportunity on this score was VZ. They could have done something special with a cross-border love story.

Anyway, what’s the big deal about not giving bound scripts? Isn’t that supposed to be the mark of professionalism, which YRF is aspiring for?

Also, as Satyam said, it’s a well known fact that both Aamir and Salman (to name two stars) have refused YRF’s film offers in the past.

Though I don’t care for their “candy floss” romances, I do appreciate the fact that YRF/Aditya have given a chance for many new and different directors — Kabir Khan, and the director of Ishaqezaade (sp?), to give two examples. I think they have a more diverse set of directors than Dharma at this point.

I loved Chalte Chalte BTW- I think that SRK actually had better romantic chemistry with Rani than with Kajol/ Madhuri/ Preity.

On that note the same director made a much better Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman with SRK and Juhi and also Yes Boss and PBDHH where he repeated the same pairing. • That’s fair Salim. And to be honest I probably like it a lot less than Satyam, but I do like it. On the first few listens I found it to be a bit too reminiscent of any other YR soundtrack in recent years but Rahman has a tendency to grow on repeated listens.. My greater concern with this soundtrack is that it will be very homogeneous and disposable. Though Rahman is rarely if ever disposable in the way a lot of the typical YR composers are.

Incidentally while I find the song pleasant enough, the actual video is quite mediocre and might do more damage to one’s “hearing” the song than might have otherwise been the case with a more interesting visual.

But because a lot of us hold Rahman in such high esteem, we feel he does deserve not to be treated the same as everyone else, and that his music should at least be assessed with more effort than usual.

But I don’t agree that Rahman’s songs just grow on you because you listen to them repeatedly. Sheila and Munni were ‘catchy’ but I wouldn’t return to them now. Whereas once I’m hooked on a Rahman song, I value it more and more with time.

[Just realized this but the Yash Chopra film has more competition than Son of Sardar. I don’t expect too much from the latter for reasons I’ve pointed out before but nonetheless it’s competition and it’s the remake of a superhit so it might surprise me but beyond this Aamir’s film releases just took weeks later. what this means is that Jab Tak Hai… has to start out huge, hit it out of the park essentially, and then sustain very well in week 2 at which point the competition in week 3 will hurt it but won’t be a killer. In other words this will have to trend well. SRK needs an OSO deal here. Of course he also needs Son of Sardar to not do much. Once again the Rahman here is key. A big soundtrack could really drive up the numbers here and there’s no reason to believe Rahman won’t come up with one. But the film nonetheless has competition in more ways than one.]

Vocals, lyrics n music are expectedly good ..
The picturisation could have been much better –but there again, I think, the design is to keep it simple n accessible.
Apparently some (esp old timers) may find the jump cuts and over eager editing too gimmicky–this does it away and keeps it basal.
Also the premise is that nostalgia, srk and the song will be enuf.
Ps: srk does seem to be in his third gear here…
The problem isn’t his age etc but confidence and hunger. But knowing him– he will make up in crucial junctures here
    Ps2:
All this talk about career advice to srk seems interesting. And those stars who spent majority of their careers trying to catch up srk and have finally attained ‘parity’ after couple of decades (!) –suddenly are his role models hahah
One may or may not like srk–and I’m not exactly a fan but as an observer–there hasn’t really a bigger success since bachchan (barring maybe aamir with some disclaimers!)
Even on an anti srk forum like this–every random link on his film generates more comments (even if negative) than the rest of threads (including the rest of khans and non khans put together).

    http://networkedblogs.com/CT0Hf
First of all, the voice is just so not right. Rabbi is a brilliant singer, but is just not right for SRK. You know who suits well for SRK – Udit, Sonu, Abhijeet, Sanu, Shankar, even Shafqat. But NOT Rabbi. Also, the song sounds like a derivative from the singer’s own Bulla Ki Jaana. It probably has to do with Rabbi’s instantly recognizable voice, and this does all the harm.

Secondly, SRK is getting old, and throughout the video, he does seem out of his age, to be playing a busker, (fake) strumming his guitar around Trafalgar Square and South Bank. I just didn’t buy it. As much he looks aged, he seems like he overdosed on Prozac. He’s too jubilant to be roaming around a busy Trafalgar Square, Canary Wharf, train stations across London and what not! Oh, and he’s happy washing cars, passing fish baskets to fish mongers and earning his β€œmehnat ki kamai”. Is that the message behind the song?

Yet they continue to get the biggest projects and prance around with ever younger heroines. Yeh Bwood ka dastoor hai. A hero does not wither until he reaches 50 at the least.
When all these 5 guys hit 50 almost simultaneously, apart from Hrithik and Ranbir, there really wont be anyone else to shoulder the burden which will be left behind.

Sanjana, talking of heroines coming to their own, two films that are giving me good vibrations : English Vinglish and Aiyyaa

Firstly because they seem to be created around genuine ideas at the core rather than films concocted to conquer the box office. The director, in each case, is making the film because he or she has story to tell.

Second, they have two very talented actresses playing two real characters rather than predictable stereotypes ( a la Heroine in Kareena Kapoor) It is a very wise decision, especially for Sridevi, who is showing her acting chops rather than trying to reprise her old charisma like Madhuri tried in Aaja Nachle. Precisely why Iliked Vidya so much in The Dirty Pictureβ€”not to foget both rani and Vidya in No One Killed Jessica.

Thirdly, both these films seem to have been written with a lot of detailing, with attention to the narrative, to the supporting characters, to the writing, composition and placement of songs.

Fourth, a kind of personal reason, they both have music by Amit Trivedi.

    • This is slightly OT, but since we’re talking of heroine centric movies, one thing I’ve wanted to say ever since “Heroine” released is: Why are the stakes so much higher for “heroine centric” films in terms of demanding that they have no male lead star of note? In other words, why must Kareena carry the entire film on her own without any salable heroes and be expected to make a 100cr film to prove her worth at the box office? For all the talk of “flowerpot” roles for heroines, even in the “male dominated” films they do contribute substantially. Two recent films of Salman’s — since he’s the one accused most of giving no chance to heroines — both show the importance of having the right heroine. In both Bodyguard and ETT, the presence of a popular (box office wise) heroine helped increase the film’s overall box office collections. Even while everyone is going gaga over Barfi cracking 100 cr, why forget that it had a very popular and salable heroine in Priyanka, even if Ileana is new to Bollywood? Similarly, would either Ra.One or Don 2 have done as well as they did without Kareena and Priyanka? You can probably make a case that the heroine (or rather, lead female actress, since the role was hardly that of a “heroine” in the traditional sense) in 3 Idiots was not that important, and the film would have done just as well with any other actress in the role, though even here I would maintain that Kareena brought some audience in.

This seems to me to be a new trend. After all, isn’t “Seeta aur Geeta” considered to be a heroine-centric film, and an iconic one at that? And yet it had two of the biggest male stars of the time as co-stars. That only added to the film as a whole, without taking away from Hema Malini’s importance to the film. Why are today’s heroines being handicapped in a major way by the demand that they have no recognizable or salable heroes in their films? If such a demand is made, the collections of such films cannot then be compared with those of hero-centric films with salable heroines to dismiss the former as unworkable. The true comparison should be to films with a focus on the heroine, but also with strong heroes present, or else to films with heroes but no heroines at all. I’d like to see how well those work at the box office!

The comparison is being made with Kahaani and DP, and not with male-centric 100cr grossers. IMO, no producer in bwood would actually believe that a heroine-centric project could even cross 50crs, all the production dynamics are geared based on that outcome. But it seems Bhandarkar overspent on Heroine and is now repenting. Kahaani and DP certainly did not have successful male co-stars. Maybe Hashmi pulled in some in DP. But Kahaani was a total Vidya show all the way. Kareena with Heroine and Priyanka with SKM could not even crack 40crs, where Vidya had 2 70cr grossers.

When it comes to commercial success, undoubtedly, Hema/Sridevi/Madhuri were in a totally different league. None of the present heroines have achieved the ROI which those 3 did. They were real audience pullers. The present gen has a long way to go to match those results.

But Anushka Sharma is very upset that Yash Raj Films did not actively involve her in the promotions of the film. When Katrina Kaif came to know about this she called Anushka Sharma at 3 am.

According to Bollywood Life, “Katrina Kaif didn’t want to be portrayed as the villain! So Katrina decided to pick up the phone and set the record straight. Anushka Sharma who sleeps quite early at night, was shocked to hear her phone ring at an odd hour. She was even more stunned when she saw it was Katrina on the line. Kat asked Anushka if she was upset with her.”

“She also cleared the air, saying that she hadn’t meddled in the promotional and marketing strategy for the film.Β AnushkaΒ was quite receptive and heard Kat out. The discussion went on and on, and the two girls spoke for close to two hours. Finally, the two decided not to pay any attention to all the idle talk and stories about their rivalry.”

β€œOn the flip side, Kareena Kapoor’s Heroine that was made for approximately ` 24 cr with an additional P & A cost hasn’t given its investors any reason to rejoice.”
Hmm I hope Kareena bids adieu to films now.
It’s time for Kareena to hang her boots !

Well Aamir has done Raja Hindustani πŸ˜‰ (it was hit movie if my memory i correct)
Well Aamir has done Dil, fanaa etc so i wont buy the arguement he cant do Body guard ETT etc… Btw those film which u say are around salman’s image. Every Actor has his image where he works aamir has none, he has done Street Romeo, Ghulam, Taxi Driver, to subtle and highly intelligent movie.

I wanted to enter the discussion about after Big B there is SRK, but didnt as i find such discussion cliched and too regular, but just to drop my words i will say as person of this generation Aamir belongs to class of his own, in which i did say Big B will fail to enter and belong, forget SRK. Vidya (after all it was abt her)

Could Vidya have done Don or Don 2 ? what was there to be done? both are movies with disaster script, and i dont even find roma character enchanting πŸ˜‰ as i will tell u seriously vidya wouldnt have done Don 2 (as PC the dumb actor) accepted a role to love the guy and not killed Don, who killed his own brother in first part. Without any remorse.. and ulta she falls for him and has sympathy for him!!

Agneepath : havent seen cant comment.

Kareena’s crapfest : I dont know which are u speaking of.

But i will conclude every actor has some selling point or image thing. Whether that is good or bad, that is the point, If doing a role by priyanka where by one has sympathy for killer of ones own honest brother (patriot police cop that was his brother) well than indeed Vidya cant do that role my friend πŸ™‚

  119. Ha rooney–I have been making the exact points that u outline (for ages) –But it’s more about the ‘scratch the surface’ deal here–so lets take these points one by one–
Firstly , im not anti aamir or anti vidya at all but this is an analytical dissection of the routes to their successes
Also Aamirs success has been much more in magnitude to vidyas so not entirely comparable!
I have myself loved n admired Aamirs range and choices & agree that even bachchan now doesn’t compare in those respects.
Same for vidya ESP in kahaani, dp etc
But the point was different ( & wasn’t to belittle their achievements)-
Both of these (more so vidya ) haven’t been the ‘natural successes’!
aamir has (to his credit) charted ( or had to take) an independent route–not the way folks like Salman has been with his easy effortless appeal (with his fans like sm) forget srk who defined an era (like it or not during his ddlj/kjo days)!
There are some ‘rules/fine print’ in aamirs modus operandi–he does v few films, takes ages to do them, works on the script hard n tight –which in itself is creditable but a ‘different’ somewhat painstaking process. One can keep arguing the egg n chicken argument here –but an aamir doing number /type of films like askhay /Salman would have been quite different –yes-this ‘discretion’ should not be taken against aamir though…
    As for vidya —
“what was there to be done?” It’s easy to say that but for a conventional heroine–don’t folks expect em to do a Sheila, Chickni chameli, deepika cocktail job, halkat etc ? Yes –they love it !
(whether one denies or not) -and vidya simply can’t really crack that –though it shouldn’t be the be-all of someone’s capability but unfortunately is an Imp facet of the job requirement
-and this in addition to the requirement for good emoting, histrionics etc–that’s why madhuri was the last such female star ..
So vidyas has been a ‘special’ case wherein certain ‘clauses’ have need removed –or let’s say, she has forced (to her credit) those clauses to be taken off to enable and expedite her success.
To add, aamlrs success has obviously been more ‘complete’ and ‘wholesome’ than vidyas –& though I myself admire and celebrate their successes, the ‘uniqueness’ and the ‘independent path’ both had to chart (more so vidya) does need to be kept in mind when comparing in a ‘like for like’ scenario πŸ˜‰
Ps: also if barfi has made 100 crores with a deaf mute hero, an autistic heroine–is talaash more ‘auteuristic’ than that???
—why the hell were aamir fans scared of even 80-90 crores target for talash for their script adept star coming after a three years break with two established heroines (one in a lapworthy prostitute role)& the other ‘drowning with a kid’ aimed at the tear ducts in a moustachioed cop thriller film ????
Why? The answer is Aamirs films tagline

When the Khans hang up their boots he’s in pole position to take over. He’s getting the awards ala SRK and the BO success is happening, slowly but surely.

Hrithik is the biggest loser here imo because he also took the Aamir route but restricted himself to 1 film a year – not enough in your early years, especially if they are not mainstream. (Kites/Guzaarish).

As for easy success of SRK and Salman, it is more to do with audience preferences than any intrinsic worth of those actors.

Although world renowned musician and singer AR Rahman is known for his original composition, but this time his originality is under a cloud.

Swedish musician Eagle-Eye Cherry’s popular song, ‘Save Tonight’ from his album ‘Desireless’ is identical to Rahman’s ‘Challa’ song from his latest movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan, especially the opening notes of guitar.

‘Save Tonight’ is one of the best known songs of Cherry and has gained popularity worldwide. The song is considered Cherry’s signature song.

On the other hand, ‘Challa’ song is sung by sufi singer Rabbi Shergill, who has first time lent his voice to Shah Rukh Khan for this Yash Chopra’s film. Though Rabbi has sung the song in his own style yet his pitch and tone will also remind you of Cherry’s singing.

Listen to Eagle-Eye Cherry’s song ‘Save Tonight’ I Listen to Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s song ‘Challa’

AR Rahman and Gulzar have teamed up for this Yash Chopra’s last directorial. The song ‘Challa’ has already become a viral on the YouTube like the movie’s trailer.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is scheduled to release this Diwali on 13th November, 2012.

Cheer up sanjana–what’s your take between Kat n anushka & sari!

Beautiful actresses flaunting chiffon saris have always been synonymous with veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra’s projects. But with two leading ladies – Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma – in his new directorial venture, the big question is, who will drape the six-yard wonder?

In the past, the evergreen Rekha adorned a white sari during a scene in Mr Chopra’s 1981 film Silsila, while Sridevi wore it in Chandni.

A source from the set of Yash Chopra’s yet untitled, Shah Rukh Khan-starrer reveals that the filmmaker has not decided as of now as to who will wear the popular attire – Katrina Kaif or Anushka Sharma.

However, both the ladies, are excited for it. If the reports are to be believed, Katrina Kaif plays Shah Rukh’s ladylove, while Anushka’s character is more of a tomboy in the film.

“Katrina will be seen wearing a lot of saris in the film. But that doesn’t mean that Anushka wouldn’t,” said a source close to the venture.

“One of them will surely get to wear the white sari. But right now it is undecided,” added the source.

The movie, set to release on November 13, has so far been shot in London, Ladakh and Kashmir.

Katrina just doesn’t work in this kind of setup at all. leaving this aside they’ve made London look a lot more ‘precious’ than even in their peak films with SRK. There it was more of a consumerist jaunt. Here it the Yash Chopra who normally makes a fetish out of Switzerland doing the same with London.

    • I liked the first song a lot but having heard snippets of the other four songs I must say I am underwhelmed. I never judge Rahman too early so I will obviously wait to hear this a few times on CD but it isn’t quite promising as much as I expected at this point and not least because one suspects he’s been asked by Yashraj to stay ‘traditional’ in certain ways. Never a good idea to do this when you have Rahman on board. You can’t trade on his strengths this way. Still I’ll listen to it properly but I liked Rockstar a lot recently and I’d be surprised if this came up to that level. And again I think the songs don’t offer enough ‘surprises’ but also aren’t complete winners on that traditional terrain the way the Ghajini song (Guzaarish) was (in fact that whole soundtrack is rather underrated) and in a different way the Challa song here is. To be clear I was never anticipating a Ratnam or Mehra kind of very interesting soundtrack here but an excellent one for the terrain and can’t say I’ve heard that so far.

The more routine dance numbers with the two female leads were par for the course for Rahman but still very energetic and enjoyable. Here the same ‘Northern’ genre stuff doesn’t do much. And it’s not about using a very rich soundtrack (even if it’s not one of my favorites) like Taal as the model. I’d say so far it sounds significantly inferior to Pukar or Thakshak.

Now Ghajini music wasnt bad but on hindsight it wasnt great either. I wsnt a fan of Rockstar music either but i know enough people liked it so i will put it down to my poor taste.

  151. OK … I heard the album twice…and it is disappointing by ARR standards… YRF have succesfully managed to dilute ARR..

So as of now, SUBHASH GHAI remains the only HIndi director who succesfully experimented with ARR to bring out terrific north indian milieu to his music..

The Punjabisation project by YRF and ARR has failed….except for CHALLA…

  152. Very pedestrian effort by ARR standards. Except Challa, no tune that catches you by the collar and forces a re-listen. Challa too has a strange overhang of Rabbi’s “Bulla Ki Jaana”. Was ARR trying to jepardize Yash Uncle’s swansong?

I think it’s interesting that everyone is blaming YRF for the music not being amazing, saying that they must have restricted Rahman. I actually think Chopra has inspired most MD’s to come up with great music for his movies.

Rahman lately for me hasn’t been consistently amazing.

People have been speaking pretty condescendingly about the music of VZ and Chopra’s 90’s movies, but personally I liked each of those albums and they were hugely popular with the public too.

    • Fair points Salim. My own sense from Rahman’s relationship with his directors is that the directors who offer something in their narrative or their vision that truly inspires him often end up getting the best (or at least most interesting) music out of him. This has been the constant in much of Rahman’s stronger works in the later years. He’s of course given good music to total turkeys but I think in the past decade or so it’s been the opposite. I tend to think that with most MDs, not just Rahman, the movies often (not always) get the music they deserve…

      Like

      • to add to to this if it’s a by the numbers soundtrack he tends to be fine in Tamil but gets flat in Hindi. So I can’t really think of too many mediocre soundtracks of his (by his lofty standards) in Tamil that I don’t enjoy but in Hindi this is almost never the case, has never been the case.

To further amplify something you’ve said there might be very commercial directors like Ghai (who was incidentally praised by Rahman for his understanding of music) who’re willing to give their film over to Rahman’s music and shape the texture and tone accordingly who can then still get something valuable out of him even when the film is run-of-the-mill. So Murugadoss just wanted 5 numbers for Ghajini and probably wasn’t bothered about what those numbers were and Rahman produced a strong ‘middling’ album. On the other hand Yash Chopra probably wanted Rahman to match his kind of ‘feel’ which is rather hard to do if you’re Rahman. You can’t quite reduce yourself to DTPH or VZ level or whatever (on the latter Yash Chopra pilfered old tunes from Madan Mohan but they all sounded much more tired in the redoing.. the double disc here featured snippets of the studio originals and they were better in every single instance) because even though some of that stuff might be enjoyable it is so in a nursery jingle way.

Finally Rahman has just been more interested in the international scene for some years (unfortunately as far as I’m concerned) and so he tends to avoid a lot of projects in India. He always shows for people he’s had a long association with and he’s interested in someone new like Imtiaz Ali who again gives over the film to him. But otherwise he probably just signs onto something like Jab Tak Hai Jaan without any great commitment.

Otherwise the guy who’s done Rockstar, Enthiran, Vinaithaandi…., Raavan, among others over the last couple of years or so is very much on his A game irrespective of what one prefers. And here the Ranjha song from Raavan is a classic example of how he produced a superb number doing something fairly traditional (Ghajini’s Guzaarish is an even better one). So it can be done Punjabi accents et al.. but on this soundtrack it just doesn’t sound like he was very motivated. To repeat what I said the other day there’s a gulf between Rockstar and this. a massive one. Among his major Hindi soundtracks I never much cared for JA but it was way better than this one.

Don’t want to sound completely definitive either but though it can sometimes take some listens to start liking a Rahman this doesn’t sound like the kind of ‘interesting’ soundtrack where one would change one’s opinion completely.

        • Well said. It’s certainly true that his Tamil works these days are by and large more consistently interesting/stronger than the Hindi works. I actually think Enthiran (even with some of Shankar’s obsession with corny English lyrics) is his most underrated work in the past decade.

    • I have mostly enjoyed Yahraj/ SRK combo movies except Veer – zara , but this movie looks so stale…IMO it will go RA1 way..huge opening with steep decline in the following week….

      Like

      • I’d say it gets a big though not sensational opening. And it then stays more stable. Because even if WOM is relatively poor on such a genre it’s unlikely to collapse as much (unless it’s KANK). Assuming of course a decent effort at the very least. But yeah the staleness factor is huge here. I doubt it can trend as well as RNBDJ (another film that started good enough but not great and then trended well) unless they have a really good narrative in place. of course the film faces two other problems. There’s competition with SOS (which itself doesn’t look too promising to me.. admittedly a Telugu superhit but something about Devgan’s Sardar look doesn’t work and Dutt looks frightening.. still I haven’t seen the original and could be wrong about all this) and then two weeks later Talaash releases. So JTHJ has to be really strong in the first two weeks.

          Challa – 3.5/5
          Title song – 3/5
          Ishq Shava – 2/5
          Saans – 3/5

Probably a decent soundtrack compared to most albums today but on the Rahmanator one of his disappointing ones. Challa is the best one for me in the album, title song and saans may grow as the former has a nice middle section. Ishq Shava sounds like a dud to me and Heer is a nice enough song. Not a bad album just would have thought for a “romantic” film there is no Tere Bina, or Ishq Bina or even close in this album. Or jashe ne behara or Kaise mujhe. The exclamation mark Rahman song is missing.

(?). with all this, it will only be considered a success if it does 225 cr. anything less is a failure! but don’t worry, i am sure srk can do it. don’t be so insecure.

  157. Rahman falters @ the final frontier -‘north’ ?-initial impression

The ‘?’ Is bcos I’ve heard parts only once and knowing rehman tunes can grow & he makes u backtrack later lol
Infact when his tunes do not do much in the first listens, it can be ominous and these sometimes really grow more later!
Rahman has done “north’ Indian stuff v well in the past as well but this is a different ball game
With the chopras, he is as far in the Indian scene from his innate style, as can be possibly.
Also for the first time, I sense a ‘subservience’ in arr wherein he is willing to negate/throttle his own style to please or conform to a makers vision
That this style is neither his natural style nor sensitivity wise is obvious.
Subhash ghai ( taal) and Imtiaz Ali (rockstar) had an adept musical sense and could actually ‘guide” him in the right direction, still leaving him ‘incharge’
Rahman does start out well here in his quest for the ‘north’ by employing some grossly emphatically ‘ north flavoured singer’ who by their own vocals could take care of any weakness of this aspect –

    Case study 1
Rabbi here fulfils the role daler mehndi performed in rang de basanti
But while in the latter, only one such song had this ‘requirement’, here all of them had to be ‘yash-ised’–thus ‘exposing’ Rahman a bit more

    Case study2
A much more Bollywood music literate ghai guided him and facilitated two v good albums musicall -taal , yuvraaj
    But musically, yash isn’t ghai

As of now-chhalla, title song, heer..sounded good
Most of these and the other songs should get better with repeat listenings –

Ps: Rahman seems to have left a lot for srk,Kat/anushka , and the chopras to salvage …
Though the latter are capable of recovering from this …
