Sukumari passes away…
Initially I was reluctant to post this given how truly grim the story of her death was, but she is one of those essential faces and presences of Malayalam cinema, (and beyond) one of the most memorable and gifted voices of its golden age in the 80s, and she has to be some kind of record holder for the sheer number of films she’s been in (some sources claim this number to be in the thousands, and I don’t really doubt this given the kind of production schedules of some of those great working actors of the age) and she deserves a note and a moment of recognition not just for this but because of how she, like Thilakan, like Murali, like Bharath Gopi, like Oduvil Unnikrishnan, was a defining artist of an unforgettable, important age.
In my search for an image, I came across the above gem, and thought it might be a nice bridge for those here who might not otherwise pause.

Wonderful image indeed… sad to hear.. even when my Malayalam film-viewing experience was just a few films old it was hard to miss her..

Found the complete image here, apparently including the actress Seema:
Have no idea what the context for this shot is. It’s always great seeing Bachchan in some of these random moments from the annals of Southern industries.

Thanks for putting this up GF. Another pillar of that bygone era passes by. Unfortunate that she had to endure such a painful end.

AB’s picture did lure me here, and now I do feel sad as I found a connection. She happens to be a cousin of the Travancore sisters Padmini, Ragini (and the lesser known – to me) Lalitha.
RIP.

Yes, she is also the aunt of the actress Shobhana.

Knew of the Tranvancore sister connection but somehow didn’t put that together, that’s right…I always forget this about Shobana.

Didn’t see that second video before, thanks. Both Mammootty and Lal share similar sentiments about her…that their respective connection to her is pretty much familial. It’s no wonder why, of course. Apiece they’ve probably done well over a hundred films with her over the past few decades.

I was astounded to learn she had done 2500 films. It beggars belief!

Yeah, it’s staggering. Even given how prolific some of the actors of that time were, it’s really a jaw-dropper of a fact.
