Farah Khan confirms Abhishek double role in Happy New Year (older post updated)

“He’s one of the finest actors with great comic timing. He just needs somebody to push him. He can get a bit laid-back. I am like his mother – younger mother – who can slap him out of bed. When I miss my son, I call Abhishek. He’s got a double role in the film and he’s done such a fine job of both roles.”

Quietly, Abhishek Bachchan has slithered forward to a place under the sun. Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan got the underrated actor a renewed box office endorsement. After saying no to a slew of almost-accepted offers Abhishek has finally given his nod to two major projects this year. The first of these is Farah Khan’s Happy New Year which Abhishek starts shooting in the first quarter of the year. Abhishek would be sharing the marquee in Farah’s film with Shah Rukh Khan. The two were supposed to come together in Farah Khan’s directorial debut Main Hoon Na. Abhishek was supposed to play the role that eventually went to Zayed Khan.

Now in Happy New Year SRK and Junior AB are being cast in parallel parts. Farah would be Abhishek’s second woman director after Revathi in Phir Milenge, not counting the cameo as himself in Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance and Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om.

In the second-half of 2013 Abhishek goes into Oh My God director Umesh Shukla’s film. A solo-hero project with a serious social issue underlining the humour, the two have zeroed in on a script that Shukla describes as a “social comedy.”

Elaborating on the project Shukla says, “This time it’s not based on a play or any other external source. It is an original script. It’s the story of a son and his relationship with his parents. I can’t reveal too much at the moment. But like my OMG it will address an important social issue in an engaging humorous mood.”

Bachchan has got a chance to work with Shah Rukh Khan again in `Happy New Year`. He says SRK took “too much time” to work with him again.

`Happy New Year` is being directed by choreographer-director Farah Khan, who had directed SRK in `Main Hoon Na` and `Om Shanti Om`.

“I am very excited to work with Farah. Farah is a dear friend and I am very excited to be part of `Happy New Year` and I love Shah Rukh,” said Abhishek here.

“I worked with him in `Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna` and I think he is taking too much time to do another film with me. It is going to be a lot of fun,” he added.

While the male leads of the film are in place, Farah has yet to finalise the female leads.

Abhishek will be flying to Dubai in September for a schedule of `Happy New Year`.

Now this one has to be mother of all developments and perhaps the flip-around of the decade. Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan, who had found themselves on the ugly side of affairs not too long ago, have decided to let bygones be bygones. The duo has made their patch up stand out in a big way by deciding to do come together again. The film in question? Happy New Year.

“Yes, Shah Rukh and Farah have hugged and made up. They are indeed coming together for Happy New Year. The decision was taken very recently and there would be an official announcement soon”, confirms our well placed source, “The director as well as the actor are extremely excited about the film as it also brings them back again after delivering two blockbusters – Main Hoon Naa and Om Shanti Om.”

This move has indeed shocked even those close to the two Khans since after the fracas that happened at Sanjay Dutt’s party a few weeks back, it had seemed like the handshake between Shah Rukh and Farah Khan/Shirish Kunder was a quick ‘let’s-bury-it’ move that didn’t perhaps hold much weight. However, what happened in days to follow only proves the adage that ‘there is no permanent friend or enemy in Bollywood’.

“The turnaround has taken place quicker than expected. Yes, they hugged and made up but no one would have imagined in their wildest dreams that there would be a professional liaison soon”, adds an industry insider, “Farah hadn’t mentioned anything at all about Happy New Year going on floors soon. In fact she had cut herself off from the outside world for full one year and was concentrating on getting the script in place. On the other hand Shah Rukh too got busy with his yet untitled film with Yash Chopra. Moreover, he is also committed to work with Rohit Shetty on Chennai Express.”

In fact in one of the earlier conversations three months ago, Farah had confessed that getting the perfect script in place was of paramount importance. Though she had the basic draft of Happy New Year in place for quite a few years, she didn’t want to take any chances for her fourth film and reworked on it in entirety before she was truly satisfied. In the middle of this all there were also rumours of her approaching Salman Khan for the role and the buzz only enhanced further when he made a guest appearance in ‘Wallah Wallah’ [Tees Maar Khan]. However with the latest development, it is Shah Rukh who has made the cut.

“When the dust settled down on the Shirish episode, Shah Rukh and Farah had a heart to heart chat. All was forgotten and this is when Happy New Year cropped up into the conversation again”, the source adds, “Without blinking an eyelid, Shah Rukh committed to Farah that he was doing the film with no questions asked. Farah too has the script ready and it is now time to close on logistics around other cast members and shooting schedule. The film is expected to kick-start once Shah Rukh is through with his film with Yashji.”

When contacted, Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan were unavailable for comment. Hopefully they do break the silence soon and let the whole truth come out in open.

  1. Would be quite a ‘comeback’ for these two after the husband getting slapped by SRK!

Of course this is a Joginder piece so I am treating it with some extra caution!

  9. As for Farah-SRK comeback. I liked MHN; and OSO was JUUST tolerable [excluding a few scenes which were pretty good, esp. the climatic scene]. TMK sucked…and I MEAN IT FREAKING SUCKED SUCKED! Not even the sucky sucking, but, the “Holy hell, I’m going to kill myself if this movie is over 10 minutes long!” sucking!

Hopefully, a better script and if it is a good script, I don’t have many doubts of Farah Khan as a director. It’s just the crappy scripts she directs.

      • REALLY? You liked TMK? Of course you have your own viewpoint on the movie, but, here’s what I think.
I think the movie was just extremely over the top. Only 1 out of ever 20 or so jokes worked with me. Akshay Kumar had a decent timing, but, the jokes were so silly that [i realized after watching the movie] I was actually laughing at the stupidity of the jokes. And the script was just outrageous. Seriously? A fake movie? Convincing a huge star that he’s gonna win an Oscar? And the facts are all wrong. Aatish [Khanna] said that Anil Kapoor won an Oscar, but, Anil Kapoor didn’t even win an Oscar for the movie. The police is shown to be the stupidest people ever. More than half an hour of the movie could have been cut and it would have made just as much sense [or nonsense] and it woulda been much less torture.

Despite the brouhaha over Shah Rukh Khan joining hands with Farah for Happy New Year, the project will have to wait till end of 2013 due to the actor’s choc-a-bloc calendar

Shah Rukh Khan will work with his once best friend Farah Khan again. In the project they had together thought of, years back. But not in the next two years. That’s right. We are sorry to douse the dreams of the many excited to see SRK recreate an OSO or a Main Hoon Na on screen. They will surely have to wait for a while.

While certain sections of the media have been busy creating brouhaha over Farah joining hands with the actor, Mirror has learnt that Khan’s calendar is choc-a-bloc for the coming months.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is currently busy shooting for Yash Chopra’s directorial comeback with Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, will start his project Chennai Express with Rohit Shetty soon after, in August.

Though the female lead for the film is yet to be finalised, sources reveal that SRK is keen on starting the venture as soon as he finishes Chopra’s project in July. And after that, he will have to choose between his childhood friend Anil Senior and Bollywood buddy Farah’s projects ABCD and Happy New Year respectively.

On October 8, 2011, Mumbai Mirror told you how SRK had already chalked out plans for his next, ABCD – a film to be made by his childhood friend. And according to sources from the industry, after Shetty’s Chennai Express, SRK would most probably opt for this project. This however, leaves Farah standing last in the queue.

“Till now, SRK was scheduled to work on Rohit Shetty’s film Chennai Express first and then Farah Khan’s Happy New Year. However, now he wants to work on his childhood friend, Anil Senior’s film ABCD. He will be an actor and producer for the project. Also, Khan wants to start work on his mythological opus based on Karna. If things go as planned, Farah’s plans will be pushed further. And Happy New Year will not start before end of 2013,” said the source.

According to the source, SRK after finishing Yash Chopra’s film will start Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express and then move on to Anil Senior’s ABCD. “The rest of the creative calls will be taken only after the IPL season next year. In all probability, he will start work on his mythological,” added the source.

We sent a text message to Farah Khan who chose not to revert.

It can get awfully lonely at the top. That’s what Shah Rukh Khan had told Farhan Akhtar’s character in Luck By Chance.

And having lost a handful of friends over the past couple of years, Khan seems to have decided to follow his own onscreen advice. Having mended bridges with Farah Khan and more recently Juhi Chawla, the star has now extended the olive branch to Abhishek Bachchan.

Mirror has learnt that Bachchan Jr in all probability will join the cast of Farah’s next starring Shah Rukh, tentatively titled Happy New Year. Now, SRK and Abhishek have never been sworn enemies. In fact, they have worked together in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna as well.

However, the two actors have never been good friends either. Shah Rukh’s equation with Abhishek’s wife Aishwarya Rai had been a little rough. Since SRK dropped Ash from his home production Chalte Chalte, the two had maintained a distance. The rift widened when SRK and Gauri got dropped from the Abhi-Ash wedding guest list in 2007. But at one of the famous Karan Johar parties a couple of years later, the actors had reportedly patched up. But last year in May, when Abhishek graced SRK’s house party wearing a Mumbai Indians jersey (that too when Khan’s IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders had been knocked out of the tournament for the fourth consecutive year), a lot of tongues started wagging again.

Interestingly, Abhishek, despite the cold vibes shared with SRK has always maintained that the elder actor was like a big brother. A source close to the film explained, “SRK and Abhishek share a rather curious equation. However, now they are all set to work together. The project Happy New Year is turning out to be a reunion of sorts. First Farah and SRK made up and now SRK will work with Abhishek.”

According to industry insiders, Boman Irani will also play a pivotal role in the film. And while the two leading ladies have not been decided yet, Vidya Balan may bag the role opposite Shah Rukh.
And though the exact date for the film to go on floors is not known, industry insiders revealed that Farah may get a five-six day window to shoot her first schedule with SRK before the actor moves on to Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express this October.

Despite repeated attempts, Abhishek and Farah remained unavailable for comment. Boman too did not reply.

According to sources, Amit Mehra – who will be directing the remake – wants Abhishek Bachchan to reprise the role of the protagonist Sikandar played by his father Amitabh Bachchan in the original.

The worldwide rights of the movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Vinod Khanna, Rekha and Amjad Khan, belongs to the three sons of Prakash Mehra – Sumit, Punit and Amit. The three brothers have decided to remake all the hit movies of their late father.

Farah Khan’s much anticipated next film starring Shah Rukh Khan will apparently have five leads. While Boman Irani has been finalized for one of the roles, the other three heroes are yet to be decided. Apparently, Farah is also planning to introduce a new face in this film.

Both Farah and SRK are extremely excited about this film as it brings them back after delivering two of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters – Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om.

The film will be produced by SRK and will go on floors by the end of this year.

Now that she has her best buddy SRK on board, Farah Khan seems determined to cast her net wider. The latest being she has signed John Abraham as one of the male leads in her ambitious next Happy New Year that also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani.

While John remained unavailable for comment, his friend told Mirror, “Farah wanted someone with a very cool body language for the fourth male lead. She had been toying with the idea of casting John for a long time. The deal was sealed a few days before John flew off to Turkey to shoot for Race 2.”

As for John, “He is very happy he will be working with Shah Rukh for the first time. And he is excited he will share screen space with Abhishek, with whom he enjoyed great camaraderie during the making of Dostana and has been good friends with ever since,” said the actor’s friend.

Shah Rukh for his part is very comfortable with Farah’s decision to bring both Abhishek and John on board, revealed an insider.

SRK and Abhishek had last worked together in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006. Their friendship soured after Abhishek married Aishwarya, whom SRK had dropped from his home production Chalte Chalte in 2002-03.

So much so Shah Rukh’s name went missing from the guest list at the Abhi-Ash wedding in 2007. It was only at photographer Dabboo Ratnani’s calendar launch party in January this year that the duo patched up.

Happy New Year is expected to roll by end this year. No leading lady has been finalised yet.

    • Not approached Sonakshi, Parineeti for ‘Happy New Year’: Farah
      Agencies : Mumbai, Thu Jul 26 2012, 11:37 hrs

Farah Khan’s re-union with Shahrukh Khan has put the long impending project “Happy New Year” on track but the choreographer-turned-director insists that they have not yet decided on the leading lady.

The 47-year-old choreographer-filmmaker said she had planned “Happy New Year” (HNY) even before her directorial debut “Main Hoon Na” and was preparing to HNY immediately after “Om Shanti Om”.

“We are not in talks with Sonakshi and Parineeti. We have not approached any one of them yet. I do meet Sonakshi regularly, she is beautiful and lovely. But we have not yet taken a call.

“Shahrukh has just come back from London so we need to sit and work out figure out as to who is right for that role. It is a big role and then there is only one heroine in the film,” Farah said in an interview.

Cracks began to appear between the friendship of Farah and Shahrukh, when the latter refused to feature in “Tees Maar Khan”, which was directed by Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder.

Shirish was allegedly beaten up by SRK at a private party hosted by actor Sanjay Dutt in January for taking a dig at “Ra.One”.

Post patch up, Farah and Shahrukh decided to start work on HNY. So far, Shahrukh Khan has been confirmed for the male lead and the other actors including John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan are expected to play pivotal roles in the film. “We were going to take John that time. But we have not yet met him now. Things just keep coming in newspapers but we have not met anyone of them yet.”

Farah says she is extremely excited about this film as she will be back again with SRK after two blockbusters – “Main Hoon Na” and “Om Shanti Om”.

“I am very excited. We are hoping to create the magic that we did with our earlier films. We have Shahrukh and Boman Irani in the film and the other cast is not finalised yet. I can’t talk much about the project,” Farah said.

“There are like four heroes and one heroine. Boman is there in the film. We have Shahrukh, Boman and two more heroes. Boman is a full hero now (referring to ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’ where he is playing the lead),” she added.

The shooting for “Happy New Year” will begin from December and then next schedule in January.

Meanwhile, Farah is all charged up for her debut film as an actor “Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi”, where she is paired opposite Boman Irani.

“I am happy that I did ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’. Its a good thing as when you get an opportunity to do something new and different in life one should do it,” she said.

Directed by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s sister Bela Sehgal ‘SFKTNP’ is the story of a 40-plus unmarried man and a woman.

“If somebody is making a film where the hero and heroine are 40 plus and it is a romantic comedy, is a great thing to do. For a 47-year-old mother of three, married, making a debut as a lead heroine is a big thing. Looking at this it feels that Indian cinema is changing. I think everyone should be proud of this thing,” she said.

The film, co-produced by Sanjay Bhansali, will release on August 24.

  19. Abhishek-John ‘jodi’ not together for Shahrukh’s HAPPY NEW YEAR

    August 25, 2012 03:42:15 PM IST
    By Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial

Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham formed a terrific ‘jodi’ in DOSTANA and it had seemed that this would be one pairing for the keeps. However with the sequel to the film being forever jinxed with talks of the whole idea being dropped, it had seemed that at least in Shahrukh Khan’s HAPPY NEW YEAR they would be seen together. However as things stand, even that is not happening now.

”Abhishek and John belong to the same age bracket and both have bounced back with BOL BACHCHAN and HOUSEFULL 2. Even though DOSTANA sequel seems almost out of question now, there was silver lining in the form of HAPPY NEW YEAR. As per latest developments though, it is only Abhishek who is close to signing the film while John has not even been approached so far,” says a source.

Now this seems to be a far cry from the news that had floated around very recently when it was said that Farah Khan had finalised John for HAPPY NEW YEAR much before he flew off to Turkey for the shoot of RACE 2.

‘Leave aside finalising, there haven’t been any talks either,” the source continues, ”John being a part of the film is sheer speculation. He hasn’t even been narrated the script yet.”

Well, all we can do is remember the adage of ‘there is no smoke without fire’!

  21. Some relevant bits once again. First Farah has confirmed many times that it’s not a regular hero role for SRK and that it’s “brave” of him to do it. There were other pieces suggested Abhishek had a parallel part including the current one. Given that the media is usually pretty anti-Abhishek Farah Khan has clearly tried hard to put this word out early! Here’s one of the quotes:

“It’s not like Shah Rukh is the hero and four people are on the back. Hats off to him to want to do it so eagerly, as a lot of people want to see themselves solo on screen. It’s going to be a fun ride for everybody,”

More recently there were rumors that Abhishek has a double here.

Though I can’t say I’m thrilled with this choice on Abhishek’s part (once again better things could have been attempted with SRK) as Farah Khan just makes these huge circuses I’m very confident about his ‘show-stealing’ abilities on this sort of terrain. Yet another rumor suggests that SRK has a quieter, darker role. Sounded a bit like the Mohabbatein part.

In any case Abhishek has D3, the Umesh Shukla deal, then Happy New Year and Dostana 2 (not sure which comes first). the latter schedule still seems more uncertain than the rest! It’s clear in any case that he’s going for all the big numbers on all this stuff. The more important question is the degree to which he can pull off a Bol Bachchan in the films that matter. Which is that irrespective of the media narrative whether he can be seen as getting the better of his co-star. This certainly was the case in KANK, here even the media admitted as much more or less. This question really matters most in this Farah Khan film. With D3 it’s far less likely to happen the way things are set up. Here Abhishek needs to just not repeat D2 and it will seem like an improvement. If it’s a proper face-off here he can do more than this. Still the way these films now seem to be set up it’s hard to do better than the co-star. Either way I have no doubts that these projects combine to give him big numbers and pull him out of the woods (the Shukla film being neither a multi-starrer nor a sequel is more key in many ways). The question yet again is: what does he do with these numbers? Does he move on to the interesting stuff again albeit in a more pragmatic mix? All of this is only worthwhile as far as I’m concerned if that is the end result.

  22. @ Satyam –this film( srk farah abhishrek-if it gets made) is my ‘birthday gift’ to you (& your abhishrek fandom!)
Irrespective of what u say about ‘prestige’ & ‘shelf life’ etc, the fact is that for ‘prestige’ etc to matter, an actor first needs to be in ‘circulation’ first ie at/near the top brass…
The ‘bread n butter’ component of any job is indispensable,
For a mainstream lead actor (holly/Bollywood) working in big productions, the box office remains an essential committment-the rest is ‘luxury’ which can be accommodated as well…

It’s also a question of ‘responsibility’
U can’t just work on someone else’s money, go for reasonable/big budgets and show no respect for the finances…
If abhishrek or any other actor, wish to do away with this responsibility, he is free to PRODUCE those projects himself(besides being ready for career harakiri!)
But as u saw with paa, it was made on a very low budget and suddenly the same bachchans were avoiding every single expense and heck not including their own fees (not even reduced fee) while declaring the budget of paa!
Ps: there are avenues to show/satisfy ones creative impulses —got for indie budgeting or tellyvision or theatre
Or else have the acumen and film sense of aamir(which abhi doesn’t /won’t have) or respect other peoples who are investing big funds in your budgets as producers
Ps2: the above is true not only for abhishrek but for all others who have creative /quality issues to satisfy …

This film should do a minimum of 125 crore plus and 200 crores is not ruled out! For someone like abhishrek that’s a great thing at this stage (& infact it’s good that he’s getting another ‘piggy back’ project to latch onto and score another biggie)–they all count,,,
After a cushion of such hits, abhishrek can try out other stuff ‘on the side’ !!!
Satyam—it’s ok of u to ‘desire’ that abhishrek works in a particular sort of film that u like –but if they end up being raavan esque duds on the box office, one can’t pass judgements on the hapless producers to change course and go for more box office friendly stuff.
@ the end of the day, the producer is hiring abhishrek and the ilk to deliver financial returns ( to begin with!)
One needs to respect the food chain or else the ‘rug is pulled’
( as nearly happened before Bol bachchan saved abhishrek)
Btw what projects does amitabh have in hand currently!?
Had heard of loads of various projects including Balki, rishi vidya project etc but none have actually started–
Lack of box office catches up with the biggest of em all….(forget abhishrek ) 🙂

  26. apex: to answer your questions from tomorrow:

You can call me Z, I’m about 45 to 50. Love Hindi films. A huge fan of Bachhan while growing up. Mid 70’s to early 90’s. Off late the interest in bachhan have gone down due to his choices of films. Not sure the age of most of the poeple on this blog but let me tell you, all this stardom of SRK, Salman, Aamir, Hrithik put together pales in comparison to what Bachhan had in late 70’s to early 90’s.

I moved to US in 1981 and almost started studying hindi films. At age 14 I watched Mera Naam Joker and fell in love with old movies. From here on my interest in old movies and old songs grew.

As far as fav movie is concerned, it depends on what type of movie you’re asking about. If it’s a love story then probably Bobby, if it’s pure Masala film then Naseeb and so on.

I’ve seen the structure on hindi cinema thru 70’s, 80’s and then when i moved to USA, saw how hindi film market grew here, hence the overall knowledge of hindi films and it’s boxoffice.

Going back to talks from yesterday, times have changed, structures have changed, economics have changed, people thought process has changed.

If D3 collects 175 in week 1 and then another 75 in rest of it’s run, then it’s a grand success at 250 crore.

In any business, you want to earn as much as you can in shortest time with less labor. Today’s multiplex culutre provides that avenue to filmmakers.

    • you can talk to me about any Hindi movies from late 40’s thru current and I can give you inside/out of it.

Growing up in USA in early 80’s, Hindi movies was about the only thing we had which gave us sense of home land.

I used to purchase every single movie magazine which included Stardust, G, Movie, Cineblitz, Screen New paper, etc… and read/study it from first letter to last. Of course as you get more knowledge you start understainging that everything has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Manoj is explaining that there’s a very small gap of time where a boy becomes a man and that short time/phase is the most confusing, frustrating time of person life because of all emotions changing. Check it out, it’s brilliant on how a movie so old captures the process of life so beautifully.

  30. Coming to this movie, HNY, This is a perfect follow up for Abhishek after D3. Most likely HNY is guarantted to make 150 crore assuming it has solo release like most big films. I think this is where most of SRK big films have suffered, the release stratgy.

Ashoka with Indian (Sunny coming after Gadar)
Veer Zaara with Aitraaz, Naach, MogulEAzam
    OSO with Saawariya
    Don with Jaaneman
    JTHJ with SOS

There maybe others too. Except for Ashoka/Indian, SRK won hands down in all other release but at the cost of not getting max it could have out of solo release.

Abhishek should fire the agent he has and get a new one. He is not in the league of Naseer, Irfan Khan, etc who do off beat films and found success in it and he is certainly not in top 10 in the commercial films. He is perfect example of somebody who is neither here or there.

Bol Bachchan was perfect starting point, followed by D3 and then HNY. there’s nothing like success, you can do off beat films later in life or do one off assuming you have something like D3 and HNY in your pocket.

He has to maintian his body too, no six pack but be lean.

Dhoom 3 will be over 250 crore for sure. Close to 300 crore assuming there is this group of audience which people talk about. This is the only thing i’m not too sure about, what is the cap for good hit movie. D3 will give us clear indication to what that cap is. Again if the movie is like 3 Idiot then it won’t really tell us the cap since you can’t make assumtion based on something that is an exception. Saemthing with 3I, we can’t compare boxoffice of all big movie with 3I because it was an exception, not a norm.

K3 and D3 will tell us clearly if about 100 crore weekend, 150 crore first week is a norm for real big movies.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan are all set to begin shooting for choreographer turned director Farah Khan’s ambitious project Happy New Year from September 1.

Besides Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, the film also stars Sonu Sood and Boman Irani.

Malayalam superstar Prithviraj, who was last seen in Aurangzeb, is also part of the ensemble cast.

After much anticipation and speculation it was revealed that Deepika Padukone will play the female lead in the film.

This is the second time Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan will share screen space after Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Farah Khan tweeted Abhishek Bachchan: “@juniorbachchan: @TheFarahKhan YAAAAAYYYY!!!”R u Ready 4 the ride juniour?!

To which the actor replied: @TheFarahKhan are YOU ready for me Farahbia?

The film, which got delayed due to Shah Rukh Khan’s shoulder injury, while shooting for Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express, will now commence shooting in September.

Actor Sonu Sood, who was last seen in Shootout At Wadala, is super excited for the film.

He tweeted: @TheFarahKhan coming bare feet all the way from bangkok just to hear those magic words from u “A C T I O N ”

Farah replied: @SonuSood: @TheFarahKhan Hav nevr waited 4 a Sunday sooo much. Buttrflies doing their bit. SUPER EXCITED.” Sonu u only shooting frm Monday.

Shah Rukh Khan also welcomed co-star Sonu Sood on Twitter: @SonuSood welcome aboard…we will all try and make this a happy experience for u.

The movie revolves around a bunch of male friends and how situation forces them to participate in a dance competition. Deepika Padukone will play the role of a bar dancer, who will help these friends win the dance trophy.

    • the plan for both stars seems to be clear. SRK wants the strongest possible followup to CE and he might be fast-tracking this. Meanwhile this might release before Abhishek’s Shukla venture in which case he’d have BB, D3, HNY followed by the Shukla. In other words at that point the solo release will have been preceded by three very significant grossers and that release itself looks to be a safe subject with the right frills attached to it. So he’d get the right initial here. It’s not a bad plan at all in the commercial sense except that beyond the Shukla film he will have serious choices to make in terms of the mix that he decides on following this sequence. In a commercial industry success often damages the actor more than failure. Often you can ‘t just walk away from big grossers. the more you do them and get the desired results, the more you are seen as being great at comedy and so on the more people come back to you with more ‘blockbuster’ fare. Meanwhile the quirkier directors decide you’re not going to do the smaller, riskier stuff and stop showing up after a while (unless of course you send strong signals to the contrary). My larger point here also is that all of this could have been done right after BnB or that entire phase when he had a lot of success. if he never returns to a better mix the years lost in between because of the riskier projects will have been a waste. So my bottom-line remains the same — if all of this leads to something better it’s worthwhile. I’m not exactly in the game of wishing to see Abhishek do a Salman! I know most star-fans are like that. They don’t particularly care how their favorite star gets a success, whether he dances with jadoo or jumps on the Rohit Shetty bandwagon! But that is simply devotion to a star and nothing else. I have always been about the ‘idea’ that Abhishek represents and in more ordinary terms in the actor I believe he is and can be. So yes I’d feel vastly more happy if sometime soon I heard a Ratnam was in the offing or a Rohan Sippy or something comparable. Obviously I don’t consider Shukla to be that sort of director though he’s perfectly alright as a transitional point.

Now hopefully you will not bore me with the usual ‘he needs hits’ and all the other stuff that demonstrates you often have a problem following English.

      • Incidentally this is not a knock on those stars who make purely commercial decisions. That is entirely their will and wish. It’s a commercial industry and the greatest legends have often succumbed to box office logic. I am here attacking the fans for their utter hypocrisy. And so on if one can equally support KHNH or OSO or CE or CDI or whatever this is a bankrupt position. Because even within that commercial group Rohit Shetty’s politics (which I’d easily take over that of the others) is preferable to KHNH’s and so on. But there are those who become fans of meaningful cinema when it’s about CDI, who are all about the gross when it’s CE or OSO or something. I can certainly understand wishing one’s favorite star to always do well whether one agrees with the choices or not. That’s a defensible position. What isn’t is this chameleon-like set of arguments or shape-shifting claims that are deployed to defend and celebrate any given choice. One shouldn’t be an intellectual prostitute (with all due respect to prostitutes).

Note by the way how on the other side of the equation and even though I haven’t seen it yet I have no real objection with respect to CE. Because the Rohit Shetty world never offended me even if it leaves a lot to be desired at other levels. And so whether it’s SRK doing it or Abhishek I don’t have an issue. On the other hand the Karan Johar world is problematic to my mind irrespective of whether the films are hits or not. I’d rather have Shetty more successful than Johar and of course it’s a nightmare for the latter that his long-standing buddy is now getting the kind of success doing Shetty that he himself hasn’t been able to provide him for more than half a decade! Beyond this it’s of course a rather different world where no one who represents that 90s aesthetic can get close to Shetty’s track record! The wheel eventually turns. Which is why self-induced Alzheimer’s when supporting a certain star or a kind of cinema is never a good idea! Hasn’t SRK met Salman half-way with CE?!

Hopefully abhishrek shouldn’t /won’t forget the raavan/players/drowna days so easily.
He needs to be ruthless and pragmatic…
As I said before, he has a dream run (by chance or default in the box office way)–bb followed by d3 and now hny…

U have to live by the rules of the land—
It’s ok to come to the USA and expecting to live by the Middle East ethic (!!) but then there are problems …

To think about prestige, meaningful projects, one has to be IN the game & be viable as a solo star…

    Other things will follow …

Ps: don’t like the looks of this omesh Shula project–he seems an old-world director–I don’t know… Don’t like the looks of him lol

    • Apex, a prostitute (again with all due respect to prostitutes) doesn’t exactly need advice if she’s selling herself to any and everyone. She needs it only when she decides to become more selective about her clientele. Your advice entails converting stars into prostitutes (which many are anyway in line with many of the fans who appreciate this logic but that’s another matter..). But that’s rather too obvious. Your advice is not needed for this (unless of course you have some greater expertise in the matter). Luckily there have always been actors and directors who decided not to take such mob advice in their time which is why their names live on as do the names of many of the films while many successful stars of their age having done nothing more than the obvious belong to the dustbins of history.

I enjoy my commercial popcorn entertainment as much as the next person. I consume it more than most people I know if not all. But if one cannot tell the difference between Dhoom and Talaash I’m afraid it’s entirely one’s (Philistine) problem. I do not look down on commercial cinema at all. But I do have contempt for a viewpoint where there is no higher standard except than that set by the box office. And again people are simply factually wrong here. it’s not debatable that many much dismissed films became important over time. Similarly it’s not debatable that even as commercial industries are always about the box office the worthwhile film (not just offbeat but even meaningful entertainment) comes about by ignoring box office pressures for a while and hoping things work out. You don’t get a production like Sholay just by doing things the obvious way. You don’t get Lagaan doing the same. There are great failures on this path but also great successes. Sometimes the former become the latter over time. Or not. Either way the filmmakers in question are always willing to risk things. As are the actors. More power and glory to them. I wouldn’t care if Aamir never did Dhoom. But I am very glad he enabled Talaash.

Your ‘prostitute’ argument holds true for any ‘professional’ engaging in ‘private practice’ be it a surgeon, lawyer, financial consultant..
Yeah they all need their ‘careers’ handled in a certain way..and there’s nothing working about it

    Like

    • In any profession one can choose to be mercenary in that way but it is hardly necessary to go to this extreme. One can be very successful not doing this. The other thing is that paradoxically even though fortune and sometimes fame can follow one in these professions one cannot go into it for just those reasons. In other words no important surgeon worth his or her salt is in it just for those reasons. Much as you can’t be a great sports figure if you’re only in it to sell your talent to the highest bidder!

Of course the contradiction in your argument is this. The system allows Abhishek Bachchan a certain flexibility. Whether it’s because of his brand-name or because he is respected as an actor or considered a star or because he has great personal relations with many industry figures or all of the above or some combination of the above is scarcely important. He has the space to do risky stuff and get back on track even after great box office failure. he’s getting these parts for a reason. It’s not as if every actor who struggles gets these chances. Hardly anyone does actually! At every point he’s still been master of his fate in the sense that when he wanted the interesting stuff he got it, when he wanted outright commercial stuff he got that too. Relative to his box office strengths or weaknesses he’s not done badly at all at any stage in terms of attracting these projects. So you can’t have it both ways! There must be a reason why he gets these opportunities. However you define those reasons as long as he has them he can keep testing the limits of the paradigm! Now of course there are some absurd folks who think these roles don’t mean anything. But we’ll leave those anxious types to their anxieties. They’re also mostly those who hide in caves when their favorite stars don’t get enough attention.

  47. Abhishek joins SRK in Dubai for Happy New Year
Bharti Dubey, TNN | Sep 2, 2013, 12.30 PM IST

SRK is riding high on the success of Chennai Express which has broken all records at the box office. Now, the actor has geared up for his upcoming film Happy New Year.

Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan flew to Dubai on Sunday for the shooting of Farah Khan’s film Happy New Year. Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder, who is not involved in the film tweeted, “Happy New Year starts shooting today! Wishing @TheFarahKhan All The Very Best. Love You Farah.”

Some of the other actors like Boman Irani and Sonu Sood left on Saturday and Deepika Padukone will join the unit on Monday. A source said, “Deepika is in Europe and will be joining the unit directly. It is a 15 day shooting schedule.”

Sonu Sood was the last minute entry to the unit. He has apparently replaced John Abraham in the film. Plans for the making of Happy New Year had begun in 2005 but the script needed some changes so was put on hold and Farah made Om Shanti Om. There was a slight tiff between Shah Rukh and Farah after the director decided to make Tees Maar Khan instead of Happy New Year.

Common friends helped SRK and Farah resolve their issues. Today we see Farah Khan directing Shah Rukh Khan again!

Bachchan did it of course in Great Gambler along with Prem Chopra. So there is an ‘Arab’ archive in Hindi cinema. Unfortunately Farah Khan basically creates these circuses where she pretends she’s offering homage to Desai but is miles away from any important achievement of that often remarkable filmmaker. let’s hope things are different here but she’s a mediocre director who mixes Johar-like instincts with certain masala elements. As for this press conference it’s more than a little silly. Just another way of advertising I suppose.

        • Spot on about Farah Khan. I was watching Naseeb the other day, so much of MHN is inspired from it. As for the press conference, if there’s one thing I don’t doubt it’s SRK’s publicity/promotions skills especially after he learned his lesson from Ra. 1. He basically perfected it with CE.

    • this is what cinema has become these days. All the advertising about HNY so far has been about Dubai. Dressing up like the locals, doing this sort of thing etc. This is what the audience shows up for.

  50. Vishal-Shekhar doing the music here. They’ve got a big one after a long time. They did Tees Maar Khan too which I found atrocious. Didn’t think OSO was anything special either though one was forced into submission on some of the songs by sheer repetition! Not that I like most Hindi soundtracks these days anyway.

Mere Apne (tentative title), starring Abhishek, Asin and Rishikapoor will go on floor tomorrow (October 1st). Its a musical film with family drama, Abhishek will be playing a Singer role for the first time. I am excited about this project. Music by Himesh Reshmaiah. He will be composing six songs for the movie. As per him, will going to be one of the BEST album of Abhishek. We can trust him, as Bhushan kumar (T Series), producer has a good ear for commercial music. I think Bunty aur Bubli /Guru is the last bachchan films which had decent Music. He may also agree to do Masoom remake because HR. He will shurely do happy anniversary (probably madam might have given the nod with out abhi’s concent, so he is little upset), no body will do such a big announcement with out leading pairs concent. there are also strong rumors that, apart from Dostana, he will also star in Mani ratnam’s next, Rajkumar Santoshis film, businessman remake, Rakeysh Mishra’s movie with Big B..also AB corp movie with Big B directed by Amit, again Idea Ad director.

  53. So, the rumours of a double role turns out to be true. Glad for Abhishek and hopefully he gets a good deal here. Give him something decent in this terrain and he can really deliver.

I don’t expect Sonu Sood to have anything significant here because it’s a role rejected by John Abraham.

I am not too excited about the plot but let’s hope there is more in it than it seems to have. Farah Khan has been successful but i’ve never been bothered with her films.

MHN worked for me for the family and relationships parts but when it came to the military vs terrorists bits, it was a huge let down. Lots of unbelievable loopholes there and those parts ranged from plain stupid to downright amateurish at times.

I found OSO very boring except for the awards portions where Akshay Kumar was very good.

    TMK was a poor effort.

Amitabh’s answer on his future projects for DNA & bollywoodhungama.

What are the film projects that you will begin during the coming year?
I have just started Bhootnath Returns, being directed by Nitesh Tiwari, with B.R.Films and T-Series as joint producers. Then hopefully by the beginning of the next year will start R. Balki’s, Sujoy Ghosh’s, Shoojit Sircar’s and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film. There are several others like Rumi Jaafrey, Anurag Kashyap, Abbas-Mastan, Umesh Shukla, Sudhir Mishra… And of course KBC by the middle of 2014 again .

  59. don’t know how dependable this is in terms of the details of the double:

“There is a lot of curiosity around Farah Khan’s Happy New Year and the role of the actors in the film. While it is known that Shah Rukh Khan, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah play Team India who participate in a dance competition, we have learnt that Jackie Shroff plays an affluent owner of a top hotel in Dubai. The actor will be seen as a towering personality in tuxedos, jelled hair and specs who is always surrounded by three-four bodyguards. It is also confirmed that Abhishek Bachchan has a double role in the film. Interestingly one character plays Shroff’s son! In this role, he will sport a moustache while the other character will be seen as a Muslim guy. For this, he will be dressed in a kurta pyjama and will have a beard. “Their looks are a complete contrast to each other,” revealed a source. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane Dias will play the publicist for Shroff’s hotel. However, when contacted Shroff messaged back, “You seem to know more than me, but I can’t speak now. Protocol does not allow me to speak.” ”

  60. Happy New Year earns Rs. 200 crores before release? By Bollywood Hungama News Network, April 02, 2014 – 08:21 hrs IST#
After the success of Chennai Express, all eyes are now on Shahrukh’s next big release, Happy New Year.

Talking about Happy New Year, it seems that this film has already started to prove to be a proverbial goldmine, even before its release. If the buzz is to be believed, then, the multi-starrer Happy New Year (which is being directed by Farah Khan) has been committed a Minimum Guarantee (MG) of a whopping Rs. 125 crores towards the worldwide theatrical release by YRF, whereas the satellite rights have been purchased by Zee for a wholesome amount of Rs. 65 crores and the music rights being sold off to T-Series for Rs. 12 crores.

Attempts to establish contacts with the spokesperson of Red Chillies to confirm this news did not yield any results.

    • One thing I’m sure here is that SRK will not take Abhishek on a ride like Aamir did in Dhoom3. Aamir called him up and asked me to accept D3 and then finally made him look like a guest appearance in his own movie!
