  1. Top Hits In First Half Of 2014
    Thursday 17 July 2014 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The first half of 2014 saw business drop compared to the first half of 2013 to the tune of 8% mainly because there was no release that emerged a blockbuster.

The top hits were Ek Villian and 2 States while Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty was the biggest nett grosser. Jai Ho had the highest share but was the white horse as the film lost for distributors who all paid premium prices but the profits of the producers far exceeded the loss of the distributors. The producers made the sort of money with Jai Ho that very few releases manage.

There were nine films that did well in the first half of the year and they are as follows. The top ten of the first half of 2014 were as follows.

    All Time Blockbuster

    Blockbuster

    Super Hit
    1. Ek Villian (share – 49 cr expected)
    2. 2 States (share 48.75 cr)

    Hit
    3. Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (share – 56 cr)
    4. Queen (share – 25.75 crore)
    5. Heropanti (share – 25 crore)
    6. Ragini MMS 2 (share – 23.50 crore)

    Semi Hit
    7. Jai Ho (share – 58 cr)
    8. Gunday (share – 37.75 cr)
    9. Main Tera Hero (share – 26 cr)

A 126 crore film is declared a semi hit while below 100 crore films are called superhits and hits. The word superhit will lose its sheen if is used like this.

  2. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania To Dominate This Week
    Thursday 17 July 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania will dominate the box office again this week and with kick releasing next Friday the Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt starrer will need a good second week if it is to get near the 75 crore nett mark .

Hate Story is the probably the best of the new releases in terms of initial but the film is mainly for single screens and business in in most circuits is down in single screens due to Ramadan. It is not the best time in the year to release a single screen film and will basically act as a one week filler at single screens before Kick.

The other two releases Amit Sahni Ki list and Pizza are multiplex films dependent on word of mouth but face strong competition from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania which has mainly done well at multiplexes.

  4. BO update: ‘Hate Story 2’ starts well!
    By Taran Adarsh, July 18, 2014 – 15:03 IST

The BO performance of Riteish Deshmukh starrer Marathi film LAI BHAARI was an eye-opener for most in the industry as it reinforced the fact that even non-Hindi films can affect the overall collections of a Hindi entertainer — HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA. However, the films have fared very well at the ticket window.

Amongst the three films that opened today — HATE STORY-2, AMIT SAHNI KI LIST and PIZZA 3D — HATE STORY-2 embarked on the best start, with certain circuits opening to 40%-50%-60% occupancy. However, AMIT SAHNI KI LIST has opened on a below average note, while PIZZA 3D has garnered a better start at places, but the overall biz is pretty low.

Meanwhile, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA and LAI BHAARI are certainly proving to be tough competition for the new releases. Both films continue to attract audiences and are expected to dominate the box-office, with HATE STORY-2. AMIT SAHNI KI LIST and PIZZA 3D will have to rely heavily on good word of mouth to post decent collections over the weekend.

      • Pizza is a wonderful little film in tamil. One horror film in which you will be genuinely scared or at the very least jolted. The end rug pulling is also nicely done. But I wonder what prompted UTv to go for such a thankless release date.

  6. SS has been pretty boring this year to be honest! But it’s justified, nothing has really excited the box office yet. Hopefully Kick changes that. And October and December will be huge, I just heard Arjun Kapoor’s Tevar and Abhishek Bachchan’s All Is Well will be clashing, and PK releases and HNY and the BB/Haidar clash so SS’s server will probably crash

SS is not boring but quite sober with less fights.

I think the first half provided much variety giving opportunities to newcomers and really young crowd.

  8. Many are suffering from selective diarrhea after UPA 2’s defeat. Katzu is one example besides the likes of Baru. If some of supreme court judges are like Katzu, so frivolous, then Supreme court is facing very bad days. Watch Katzu’s interview with Karan Thapar. And his walkout during NDTV interview. If he was interested in the country’s future, What prevented him from spilling the beans earlier? He would have full support from AAP and BJP at those times. Even now he is teasing by saying that he is having so much information and he will not disclose. A supreme court judge speaking like this!

Azad played with mom Kiran Rao, who was part of one of the teams and Abhishek Bachchan. Azad’s dad, Aamir Khan played in the opposing team at the match. The event was organized by Azad’s older half-sister Ira Khan for an animal welfare organization.

  14. FADING GIGOLO

i ususally don’t miss one of these ‘art house screenings’ that i get access to. Also I increasingly (& surprisingly) pick up my ‘pen’ only when something ‘inspires” me to do so.
Many have tried to do a Woody Allen. This is an Allen flick not made by Allen himself! Now its not a classic and will label it as a harmless fun adult comedy flick. But the maker knows his job of not only being a ‘gigolo’ but of being a ‘filmmaker’. John Turturro, who is the (unlikely) lead and the director is an accomplished miniaturist capable of suggesting entire lives in the briefest of screen time. Having said that, there was a bit of ‘nothingness’ to him and his casting that i couldn’t shrug off. However he does well if one considers his twin role of a director & also male lead.

Allen needs money and persuades his friend Turturro into becoming a gigolo. This idea comes to him out of a quirky random request from his dermatologist Sharon Stone, who is later joined in by Sophia Vergara. A man give fulfilment and pleasure to women here which is quite a departure really, isn’t it? With Murray acting as the ‘manager,’ the expected dilemma of love vs money soon unfolds. The involvement of a ‘dermatologist’ and Stone-Vergara indicates a ‘skin flick’.

But lemme clarify this at the outset-It aint one! and thats why I’m bothering…

The crux IMO, though is, Vanessa Paradis, a rabbi’s widow. Turturo uses his sensitive hands to coax her out of her grief. In a telling moment, while he is in the middle of a threesome (with stone & vergara no less) , he suddenly stops ‘functioning’! The thoughts drift to the Paradis issues torn between her plight as a widow and her conservative jewish community and her ‘needs’.

The music jus like the setting has a euro feel drilled into it. The Dean Martin feel starts lending itself to Jazz blended seamlessly into the narrative. But the star of the show wasn’t sharon stone nor Sofia Vergara ( i haven’t been a fan of their overstated charms esp that of the latter!). Vanessa Paradis gets the graph right and lends her ‘vocal skills’ to good measure…in whats probably the best performance of her life (oral or practical)

  16. Hate Story 2 Has Good First Weekend
    Monday 21 July 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Hate Story 2 did well in its first weekend as it grossed a little over 14 crore nett. The film always had a chance of doing well at single screens but it is the multiplex business which is better than expected and helped to a good first weekend total. The weekend business is as follows.

    Friday – 4,85,00,000
    Saturday 4,30,00,000
    Sunday 5,00,00,000

    TOTAL 14,15,00,000

The film did not grow much on Sunday as it had nothing for the families. The Sunday collections were similar to day one. The film would have probably emerge a hit if it was not for the release of Kick with collections of 30 crore nett but now it will have to settle for lower unless it surprises with good numbers after the release of Kick.

    • Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Is Steady In Second Weekend
      Monday 21 July 2014 12.00 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania had a good second weekend of around 13.25 taking its ten day total to around 64 crore nett. It was again North india leading the way with Delhi/UP grossing nearly 3.50 crore nett and East Punjab around 1.60 crore nett. The drop from first weekend is just a little over 60%.

The film did fall in mass circuits like CPCI, Nizam and Bihar as these circuits are dominated by single screens and Hate Story 2 has scored very well in these circuits. The film will cross the 70 crore nett mark but it is likely that Kick will stop it going to 75 crore nett.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is the fourth biggest hit of the year till date after Ek Villain, 2 States, Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania saw a fairly big drop on its second Monday. Normally film which have worked colledct similar figures on second Friday and second Monday but Humpty Sharma Ki Duklhania was around 40% less. The four day second week business is as follows.

        Friday – 3,00,00,000
        Saturday – 4,25,00,000
        Sunday – 5,75,00,000
        Monday – 1,75,00,000

        TOTAL 14,75,00,000

The film has grossed 65.50 crore nett in eleven days and should be around 70 crore nett by the end of its second week and probably finish at around 72 crore nett for its lifetime business.

  17. KICK – The Pre Eid Effect
    Wednesday 23 July 2014 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The year has not been an impressive one with box office collections down 8% in the first half of 2014 compared to the corresponding period in 2013 but that first event film releasing for the holiday period is here in the form of Kick and expectations are humongous with talk of opening records and challenging Dhoom 3 lifetime.

The film is that big grand action film with a superstar which appeals across the board but eventually it is pre-eid and a film can only do what the period allows it to do. The makers probably had a tough decision as to whether come on Friday as it is coming now or Tuesday (Eid) when it probably would have set an opening day record.

It is probably better coming on the Friday as it is a fourteen day window rather than that ten day window it would have got if it came on Tuesday. The advantage for a Tuesday release would have been momentum gathered right from day one but its unlikely it would have covered all of Fri-Mon business that it missed with a Tuesday release.

A challenge to Dhoom 3 lifetime is hard as that film had 21 days till two films released which had potential to find an audience and give it competition. Kick only has fourteen days and four of them will see some of the audience staying away. It is hard to say how much it will be affected by pre eid but a Krrish 3 released pre-diwali managed less than 19 crore nett day one. In that period many Hindu’s stay away from the theatres and with pre-eid its the Muslim population that stays away.

There is a lot of talk of opening records but its an unlikely scenario as it would a huge shock if pre eid does not affect it. There was a case of Ek Tha Tiger (2012) which released pre eid to set a record but that was on a big national holiday where business improves by 60%. The next day saw Ek Tha Tiger fall below 15 crore nett which was a normal day though obviously business has gone up since then. Realistically a first day above 20 crore will be very good and if goes towards 25 crore or higher then it would be extraordinary.

The record which Kick can aim for is the most days over 20 crore nett. So far films like Chennai Express and Ek tha Tiger have gone over 20 crore nett on three days while Dhoom 3 went over 20 crore nett on five occasions. Kick should beat Chennai Express and Ek Tha Tiger on this count and challenge Dhoom 3 as it will put big first week with weekdays putting up huge numbers.

For many of us who thought ‘Once’ was not enough, Irish director John Carney serves us a second helping of his delicious musical delicacy, and a chance to ‘ Begin Again’.

I don’t remember seeing a sweeter looking woman on screen than Keira Knightley as far back as I can remember. She sings quite well too. And you won’t have seen a more lovable loser on screen than Mark Ruffalo either. Scraggy beard, soulful eyes and all . They are absolutely natural on screen and rustle up a charming little story that we can carry home with a lot of affection.

The story is simple enough. She is a songwriter of sorts who have broken up from her singer boyfriend who has left her behind to chase stardom. He is a music producer who has been fired by his studio for not having created hit in years. He lives separately from his estranged wife and a teenage daughter who wears clothes that ‘ leave nothing to the imagination’ and tells him that she spends all her pocket money on condoms ( Maybe she is saying that for effect.)

He goes to bar to get pissed where she is singing one of her songs during an open mike slot. It’s a good song and he is touched. Magic happens in the film at this point as he starts imagining, visually, different instrumental accompaniment to the song, a complete track is born before our eyes. He wants to get his ex-studio to sign her. She reluctantly agrees. But the studio boss wants to hear a demo first. He decides to lump the idea and convinces her to record an album without a studio, without any money, using talented out of work musicians from his old contacts, playing outdoors at different locations of New York city, ambient sounds and all.

Magic happens once again in the film as they record different songs, the epiphany coming when his daughter joins the band on the guitar, playing a mean lead solo.
They take the album to the studio but decide to lump the deal once again, choosing to distribute it on the Net one dollar apiece. They both have achived redemption and the chance to begin again, thanks to the music.

In the meanwhile the star boyfriends wants her back. He is beginning to work things out with his wife and daughter. So do they get together in the end. He and she? May be. May be not. That’s not the point. The point is …they made this beautiful music together. And rediscovered the will to live and be happy.
If you love music, musicians and the process of music making you just cannot afford to miss this. You missed ‘Once’. But not again. Because it is playing in a theater near you…at Inox and PVR.
