Karan Johar to direct Aishwarya, Ranbir and Anushka in ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’

“Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will fulfill my big dream to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: KJo

I had two ADs with me there, to research my other husband-wife film. I called them and said, ‘Change your plan. I am going to do that later. For now, get your dictaphone out.’ And I narrated the film in detail to the both of them and from what they recorded, they put it down as a screenplay. When they say that a film is born within you and it comes right out, it’s true. I landed back in India a day before Diwali. And I spoke to all three of them one after the other (Aishwarya, Ranbir and Anushka) and they were all on. All three of them sat on the same spot of my house and I now consider it my lucky corner.

Why Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma?

I had got to know Ranbir and Anushka really well while shooting Bombay Velvet. And I saw their chemistry. Bombay Velvet had tapped into an unusual part of their chemistry. This film will tap into another unusual part of their chemistry.

How come Aishwarya and you have not worked before?

I have always wanted to work with Aishwarya. She and I have missed working with each other on several opportunities. I had first offered her Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and at that time, she was doing Jeans. There was a juncture when I thought Kajol would not do Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham as she had just got married. But I remember Kajol and I had this emotional moment. She did the film and I landed up not calling Aishwarya. Then at one juncture, I wanted to cast her in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and things didn’t work. It’s been a hit-and-miss scenario with her literally. This time we hit it, literally. And it’s a very special role.”

  1. This is big. First time ever he’s working without SRK..

Obviously a huge deal for Ranbir..

She’s apparently signed Rohit Shetty’s next with SRK as well

        Like

        • Maybe SOTY isn’t serious but its the sole project in decades which really benefitted the industry by the amount of project Alia, Varun and Siddharth has been signing. It created new stars and brought so much freshness to the mundane same 5-6 stars lineup. We need such films and more stars to the game so that the dependency of same 6-8 stars reduces lot and brings diversity to movie watching experience.

          Like

        • Two of those stars were again from the industry. So I’m not sure what ‘freshness’ means in this context! As for the same 5-6 stars otherwise I’d disagree. If one does it by stars who’s been around for three decades, then two decades or less, then a decade or so, you will find about 10 names (roughly) that seem to be hanging around which I would say is more or aligned with the industry’s historic averages in this sense. So you have from an older generation Aamir, Salman, SRK, Devgan, Akshay (the only guy before this generation with some relevance still was Dutt), then Saif, Hrithik, Abhishek (Saif of course debuted closer to Devgan than Hrithik/Abhishek), then Ranbir, and a number of other younger stars today. Whether anyone other than Ranbir can put in that many years remains to be seen. I might be forgetting someone here perhaps but my point is that no one else from those older generations is around today doing films consistently at a relatively major level. Now if one went back to for instance the 70s or 80s one could draw up a list which could more or less look like this. Including on the longevity factor.

But even assuming that we’ve been seeing the same faces for a long time that’s again upto the audience. No one’s forcing them to keep watching older stars! They can give Ranveer Singh bigger initials than Salman if they wish to!

          Like

        • I don’t think it matters if they are from the industry or not but just introducing new stars is step ahead than making another film with major star. Also, Varun and Alia were not like Ranbir where lot of film makers were queuing up to launch or even like Anil Kapoor’s son (Rakeysh Mehra). Varun was almost given a supporting role and didn’t get the top billing in SOTY and he didn’t look like he could ever become a solo star but there is a growth and promise from future films. The whole of Bhatt clan(including Pooja Bhatt) and their films are now considered B-grade and if Karan wouldn’t have launched, I doubt anyone would be fighting over launching Soni Razdan’s daughter. Basically Karan made stars out of 3 nothing actors which is a good achievement.

          Like

        • I don’t disagree but that’s not the point. Surely one’s definition of freshness ought not to be about the dynastic principle And when Johar really gets to a serious project he goes to Ranbir not Varun Dhawan!

  2. SRK-KJO are definitely done now. Probably best for them both- neither KANK nor MNIK were big hits (actually debatable clean hits) and now KJO can continue making Romcoms. I wonder if SRK will be in Aditya Chopra’s next now…If BV is a hit and Aishwarya’s comeback film(s) are hits then this will be even bigger. Although Ranbir seems to be doing back to back romcoms- Tamaasha and then this. However this seems to be more “mature” ie KANK than candy floss like KKHH…

    • This is true, barring a couple of films Aishwarya’s filmography does not do justice to her stardom/talent. And in terms of “big” hindi films of the time she’s only had 3 of them- Devdas and Mohabbatein and D2. Her hit to flop ratio is 7-8:28. Katrina in a similar time span (~11 years) has been part of 8-9 “big” films and has an outstanding ratio of 15:22. Her last outright flop was way back in 2008 with Yuvraaj! But Aishwarya imo is in another class, if the SRK-RS film is confirmed then her upcoming filmography is better than/as good as any current actress!

Youngsters loved it when it came out and have loved it since – and that is precisely why it bothers me a lot.

As someone who grew up on a steady diet of 1970s films, the inherent conformism of DDLJ and much else that came after is troubling. One of the great cliches of the 1960s Hindi film was the stentorian father declaring to his child – “Yeh shaadi nahin ho sakti.” This was usually on the basis of class – rich boy-poor girl or vice-versa – but it could very well also imply caste or religious differences.

  5. Aishwarya is a case of media hype and nothing else. Go over all her filmography and you won’t find more than 2-3 moderately memorable performances let alone remember movies because of her.

She is a decent actress and nothing more. The media glorified her and slow cooked her “most beautiful in the world” recipe to its limit. The truth is neither does she have a cult following because of her acting skills nor does she command Indian audience.

Someone mentioned Katrina Kaif above. In my opinion Katrina Kaif hardly qualifies to be an actress let alone a good one but there’s no doubt about the fact that she is the female Salman Khan as far as the star power is concerned.

Aishwarya’s biggest success is Dhoom 2 (just like Katrina’s is Dhoom 3 and we all know why did these movies become as successful as they did)

Barring a HDDCS and Raincoat (and to an extent Guru- but that was mainly AB) she’s nowhere as far as acting achievements in Hindi cinema is concerned. Her Box office achievements are even more dismal.

Most of her recognition is just owed to the super glorification of her so called “most beautiful woman” in the east and the west. Her so called Hollywood films ( which were utterly forgettable anyways… Bride and Prejudice and mistress of spices.. LOL) and then the all important clan frenzy India favorite “bachchan bahu”.

      • What’s this “Married with a baby” non-sense.. How’s her marriage or baby have anything to do with her acting skills or her film buddies..(Besides you guys say that as if Ash is some poor fisherwoman who takes care of baby the whole day without help and then cooks and serves a husband who comes drunk after work) Do you go to a movie judging the stretch marks on a woman’s belly or how she acts.
On that stupid Marriage note–Vidya Balan is married too and she carries movies with more élan and commands audience in a way that Ash never has. Kajol (even though she has become very repetitive in last few years) has acted in movies after and marriage and kids too..and btw Kjo may give her another movie too.

I like the way you said toplining the biggest film”s” all of a sudden this became plural out of nowhere.

Rani, Preity, Karisma, Madhuri, etc.? Anyone? Vidya commands audiences? What happen to her last few films? I”m a VIdya fan but don’t pretend everything she does has the audiences running to the theatres.

Kajol came back a few yrs ago but she was in her early 30’s when that happen.
Aishwarya is 41 and hasn’t done a film since 2010.
If she’s just ‘media hype’ its a wonder why she’s still getting big offers.

As for your comments on her as a mother. If Ash wanted to get back to work and leave her baby to the nannies she would have returned to movies sooner. She quite clearly stayed home to be with her daughter.

        • And yet again,..whats her being 41 year old has to do with anything.. Right now you don’t even know whether she’s playing Ranbir Kapoor’s aunt or same age lover but you have decided that already.

Vidya does command audience, but she can’t be the sole reason for the success of a film- no one can be..Cast Salman khan in No Smoking and it still won’t be a hit.. The comparison of Vidya and Ash is in the people they attract because of their “talent”..While Ash may get some eyeballs because of the “return of Bachchan Bahu” shebang, Vidya on the other hand is a rockstar factor behind Kahaani, TDP, NOKJ etc.

          Like

        • and btw I didn’t say she’s getting offers because she’s a bachchan..I said she may get some eyeballs which means audience who have way too much interest in what actors are (dating who or married to who..or married at 41 with baby and cooked rajma chawa today) than how they act.

        • Talent is subjective but you keep ignoring or just missing my point regarding your ‘media hype’ comment

So what if she’s playing a middle aged woman. I hope she’s playing her age. Thats the point!

          Like

        • If she’s playing her age then what’s the point of bringing up the 41 years old line about 41 times now. Many actors play their age ..so what ..big whoop!!.. Amitabh played his age in Nishabd,, Rekha just played her age of 141 in Super Nani recently..

My “media hype” comment was regarding the media glorification of hers where they portray her as some super talented actress with a whole lot of success in her kitty..while the truth couldn’t be more distant. You have to read more newspapers (particularly newspapers from 5-6 years ago to understand this)

The whole “west acceptance” of hers is also a big show off many a times pivoted by the PR (she is not the only one who has such a PR..but she has her share of luck, looks and a gurvinder chadda movie).. People in the west know her mainly because of the Oprah episode where again she was portrayed as some super achiever !.. Its laughable that she gets to attend Cannes every year with no movie of hers ever coming remotely close to the distinguished one at the festival. She lands up there due to her cosmetic brand and does her quota of “I am popular in the west too” act. (Sonam Kapoor is following closely)

Within the limited framework and scope of churning out classics in BW, I would give her credit for trying her best in doing different roles ( raincoat ). • Way too harsh about Aishwarya, IMO. I really think you’re letting your hatred of her compromise your objectivity. Case of media hype and nothing else? Well, the same can easily be said of 90% of actresses in Bollywood at the moment. Nothing more than a decent actress? C’mon. Its as if you’re talking about Katrina Kaif here.

Sure, Aish isn’t a great actress, never has been, but she’s definitely a good actress. I’ve seen enough of her work to say that she’s better than “decent”. Judging by just “Raincoat” alone, she’s capable of being even better. Her talent has remained largely untapped, if you ask me. I’ll take her any day over the likes of Deepika, Sonam, Nargis, etc.

Her biggest handicap is unfortunately her very extreme, distracting beauty. Its very tough for people to take you seriously if you’re considered “too pretty”, especially if you make your living as an actor.

      Like

      • My judgment of her talent is based on her work. She was very good in Raincoat and good in HDDCS but beyond that she’s plain decent at the max. Its not my or your fault that her talent remains untapped. I will comment on what I see rather than what I don’t hate Ash. I don’t even dislike her let alone hate. I do find her decent and hence stated that. Her expressions are limited and her dialog delivery often gets monotonous. she resorts to a similar shrieking act in her emotional as well as anger depicting scenes. On that note I absolutely detest Katrina because she has the expressions of a lamppost. But I can’t deny Katrina’s success and I can’t deny Ash’s more or less an average to below average career- both acting and success wise.

Btw I agree with your statement that- “same can easily be said about 90% of the actresses” . But just because its true for 90% of the actresses doesn’t make it any less significant.

“Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” also features Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The movie will have Ranbir and Anushka paired up together.

Karan had earlier said that the movie is not a conventional love story or love triangle. It’s a film that dwells deeply on relationships, heartbreaks and how love completes you, defines you and yet leaves you wanting for more.

“Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” is slated to release on June 3, 2016 and will be shot in New York, London, Paris and parts of it in Delhi.

  10. Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil to release in Diwali 2016
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, July 06, 2015 – 18:23 hrs IST

Couple of months ago, Karan Johar had announced his next venture Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which will have Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for the first time playing the lead in his film. Also, the film will star Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Kapoor.

While Karan Johar will don the director’s hat for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, he recently also took to Twitter to talk about the release date of the film. He tweeted, “My next directorial film #Aedilhaimushkil starring Ranbir, Anushka and Aishwariya will release Diwali 2016… @AeDilHaiMushkil @foxstarhindi”

Though the story of the film is yet to be known, there are rumours that the film is a remake of Doosra Aadmi (1977 film starring Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and Rakhee) and also, that the film will have Saif Ali Khan in a special appearance. However, Karan Johar and the cast are keeping the plot of the film strictly under wraps.

Apt dialogue in Munna Bhai lingo ‘bollywood kya ghanta develop kar raha hai ….’

We recently saw May considered the dullest month due to IPL and market lethargy turn out to be one the most active month in bollywood with earnings beating periods like even a Diwali. Just consider if BV had even a half decent run, Indian box-office would create a record of sorts. Clearly something more is required than just a release strategy…..

    • It’s true that these days Bollywood has become almost entirely about the ‘modalities’ of marketing and release. Obviously these are important aspects of film production in this age but when a film is made keeping entirely this logic in mind it’s hardly surprising that you get a big bang initially and usually a weak if not downright poor follow-through. Very few commercial directors in India are really even trying to make a sincere film. One would think there would be more takers for Hirani’s model (he’s not even that big on advertising, certainly his trailers are almost always underwhelming, at least relative to the strengths of his films) but amazingly there aren’t. And there’s a simple reason. many people can make a passable film which with the right combination of factors can race to a big gross but it still requires authentic talent and sincerity to do what Hirani does. Now there are sincere directors at the small film level but hardly any at the blockbuster end of the spectrum. Which is again why you get poor trending. The moment these films are launched it’s easy to figure out what’s going through the minds of the filmmakers. And at that very point it’s easy to predict what the film’s going to do. There are relatively few surprises one way or the other. Because when trending is taken out of the equation and an absurd or absurdly corrupt system decides it’s just about the big bang or an absolute gross completely decontextualized from anything else then you will also have filmmakers taking such decisions. Rohit Shetty himself and despite all his 100 crore grossers could have far bigger ones in most cases but again he’s content with the low hanging fruit. He’s being celebrated for this and he has no reason to try more.

And even if money making is the only criteria for modern film-making even then Hirani / Aamir model works to be a better deal in wealth accumulation. One cannot beat 600-700 cr even by dishing out more volume and quality still works out to be a better deal than qty.

So many movies in the recent past which sounded interesting during launch of these promo missed a mark not because of paucity of funds or budgetary considerations but taking short cuts in writing and presentation. Being a movie buff one can easily pin point those moments sitting in the theater and cringe. A bit of polishing and presenting a scene differently and testing / respecting the audience would go a long way.

    Like

    • True but the Hirani model is also more of a challenge. Because you can’t replicate it cynically. You really have to be a talented person to make that sort of film. Certainly you can do Hirani-lite or aspire for that sort of thing but even that would require a certain authenticity and talent and then the right choice of subject and so forth. On the other hand you put together blockbusters that are basically intended to be ‘extended trailers’. You feed the audience these stimuli, they don’t love them most of the time but they usually don’t hate them either. And even in the worst case scenario you make that initial killing. This is the sort of model lots of untalented people can replicate! So while it’s true that the Hirani model is vastly more profitable in a system where the worst kind of mediocrity gets institutionalized you don’t really have the pool to pick out more Hiranis. And/or the system doesn’t incentivize this sort of thing. Hirani then seems like the exception to the system where the Rohit Shetty kind of figure is much more the norm.

I think not investing proper time is more of a cause for many pedestrian stuff being dished out. It survives due to lack of competition and lack of credible challengers which again results due to industry soaked in nepotism and being heavily guarded to outsiders.

Though I agree that one must be a talent like a Hirani to churn out sound movies, but even he works within his own limitations and being best tackling genres/ societal issues to the extent we may term as uni dimensional (disclaimer: what we have seen until now).He may have more up his sleeve but we will have to wait for that.

In that respect each individual has his own unique strength but what is required for excellence is time and discipline to nurture it to the fullest extent and forego the chalta hai attitude and being afraid of repercussions presenting half baked stuff. Even if one is not doing path breaking work but atleast try to be true within the genre created and to hit the right notes and find sensibilities in that make belief world. We find that example in hollywood so many times and if enough time was not spent in transporting us to their make belief world all those Hollywood superhero / blockbusters would seem absolute shams and one could never marvel at a TDKR! and what we are bound to get is kitschy Ra1

  14. Karan Johar reveals all on Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Anushka Sharma’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, Jul 18, 2015 – 03:20 IST

Ever since Karan Johar announced that his next directorial outing, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, would comprise of a stellar cast headed by Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma, there have been speculations galore on what the film is all about. Since the film is a love triangle, Ranbir and Anushka belong to the same age group, and Aishwarya is elder to both in real life, there was an instant assumption made that the film would be a remake of Yash Chopra’s production Doosra Aadmi.

Reason being that Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor had featured in the said film with Raakhee and Neetu Singh.

Though Karan Johar kept quiet on the entire insinuation for last many months, he has had enough. He recently declared that Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has absolutely nothing to do with Doosra Aadmi (even though he loves that film), and is instead an absolutely original film, just as has been the case with his last four directorial outings – Student Of The Year, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

He also said that rumors like these have accompanied him right through his career as whenever a high profile film is being put together, people love to form their own assumptions, most notably being Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which – till its release – was expected to be Silsila revisited. Reason being that Abhishek Bachchan featured in the film and decades back, his father Amitabh Bachchan had led Silsila – a film on extra marital relationships – from the front.

When prodded further, Karan also said in his own characteristic humor that in current times, people somehow find it tough to believe that something original can actually be put together. Even though he is making an effort to tell an entirely different story in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, such rumors are part and parcel of a filmmaker’s life and the best way out is to just carry on with one’s work and let the final product do the talking.

Well Karan, as long as it is an entertaining film from you which indeed gives Ranbir, Ash and Anushka their right due, audience won’t mind that at all.

  15. Red Chillies and Dharma Productions to co-produce Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

“I am not doing a film directed by Karan as yet. If I am not wrong, he is doing a film with Ranbir (Kapoor), Ash (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Anushka (Sharma); and I am not part of it. We (SRK’s production house) are co-producing a film with Karan, which, I think, will be quite interesting because the script is interesting. I recently heard the story. Karan has chosen the script, and he has a good mind. I like the fact that he is joining hands with my company,” says Shah Rukh, adding that they have “been in talks” for some time now.

    • LOL, love the way he starts that response with “if I am not wrong…”! As if he doesn’t really know what’s going on after Johar has already announced this and the whole world knows!
