  5. lol agree !

Ranbir for all the hullabaloo for being most talented actor around has easily got typecast now. This is so much the same he has done before. Imtiaz Ali has never made a fully realized and fulfilling movie until now and though JWM worked with the crowd it was too simplistic for movie to stand out.

On Ranbir , the minute he tries to step out of this comfort zone he exposes his shortcomings so this and the next KJo movie is the route he will take until he reestablishes himself which takes him to 2017/2018. After that its still a wait and watch approach.

  6. Mine thoughts are same . From Bachna A haseeno till YJHD..Don’t know how many times Ranbeer has done this. Future Superstar Huh ! Even Deepika is doing same role. Still she is doing some intrestin work in between. But sala apna to bad luck hi kharab hai i am backing Ranveer singh wo bhi nahi chal raha hai. Finger crossed for ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Even there Bhansali’s ego could backfire. They should not Release thier film with ‘Dilwale’

  7. So tired of this been-there-done-that Ranbir act now. His attempts at breaking out of the mould have backfired in the last cpl of yrs, soon he will find himself lagging behind Ranvir/VarunD. One does wonder though with all these contemporary under-30 heroes, when will they have a breakout moment like DDLJ/HAHK/RH or even a Deewar by a longshot? Or perhaps this is a new paradigm, where none of them will become true mass superstars of yore.

  8. If this one doesn’t work then Ranbir is in trouble coz Jagga Jasoos won’t work, certainly not after infinite delays. Then it’ll be too long without a hit (last would be YJHD in 2013) before Karan Johar’s next in Diwali 2016. Karan’s movie can go eitherways as well and is not a sureshot hit as earlier especially if Ranbir is not on success path. Nothing officially signed after these movies. That Superhero movie gotta stop, certainly not when you are not doing well.

    • but this looks to be the sort of deal that will do well.. how big of a success Imtiaz Ali can come up with is another matter.

      Like

      • Almost unanimous reaction is the deja-vu feeling and uninteresting. This it not a sureshot blockbuster anymore. It can do well around 150 crores at best but Ranbir needs a solid 200cr hit to get back on track.

        • 200 isn’t a fair bar at all for this sort of film. YJHD would have done this much in today’s money, more or less, but that film surprised with a very strong performance. There’s almost no multiplex deal that does this much. It’s usually a much more mass-oriented subject. Of course there are enough multiplexes for such films to do 200 routinely but it just never happens. Because these genres are largely empty. But also if 200 is the bar here what should the bar be for other important stars in mass subjects. One should begin counting at 300!

150 would be more than enough here. Anything beyond this would be a bonus. With this genre they could probably even get away with 130 or something assuming most of it doesn’t come in week 1.

          Liked by 1 person

        • I’m saying 200 cr for a ‘solid hit’ without any doubt to just get back Ranbir on track. Blockbuster(250, 300) will be something else. YJHD is a blockbuster and doesn’t happen with every film especially when he’s not even able to get a small hit after that.

        • I think people have become a lot more unforgiving as well. Stars do the same genres for years and years. What was SRK doing for so long? I think the bigger issue might be that the media has oversold him for a long time as a sensational actor and star. So when a couple of films don’t work (admittedly not ordinary failures) if you then get back to business-as-usual this is of course not as interesting. But then the interesting stuff doesn’t work most of the time. Even Rockstar was just about ok all things considered. I’m no fan of this genre but I’ve seen plenty work along these lines. This should get a good initial one way or the other. but yes I’d be surprised if it’s half the film that Rockstar was and that’s not the highest bar imaginable. It might also be that directors sometimes push these things a bit too far and it starts becoming ridiculous. Corsica? C’mon!

          Like

        • I don’t think anyone has pointing out about the genres here. I would think no one react the same for Karan’s movie with Ranbir even if its the same genre. But here the characters are looking from other movies like Kabir from YJHD wants to break routine life and goes to Paris and Deepika being part of it. Deepika’s Cocktail character(also written by Imtiaz Ali) also reflecting here. So multiple things contributing to the Deja Vu feeling.

All things said, this is just reaction of the trailer, movie can be different and actually has very good story different from any of the previous said movies.

        • Funny to hear HNY collections. Obviously it didn’t too well but even BOI calls its Superhit and at 178 crores (180 apprx). Producers numbers are 203 crores. Which is apprx 10% difference which is same as Chennai Express where BOI is at 208 crs and official figures at 227 crs. Usually 10-12% is the norm between Producers and BOI numbers. Only in the case of Hrithik’s movies, it is very large number.

Btw, YJHD did about 177 crores at BOI and HNY did 178 crores.

          Like

        • Whatever the fight over the numbers the idea that this is a super hit film is just absurd, for multiple reasons, all of which would be simply too tiring to rehearse. What does happen though is that fans of a particular star hold on to these ratings desperately (hate to put it at bluntly as this but it’s true) and cherry-pick stuff. The problem as always is about the larger spectrum. So if HNY is a super hit at that total (even leaving aside questions of trending) what does it say about similar films that do much more or lesser films that do the same. Somewhere the ratings just become absurd when you put everything together. Which has of course been an old point of mine. To then ‘solve’ the absurdity that arises people come up with even greater absurdities. These are arbitrary numbers across the board on budgets and so forth. Anything that makes the original absurd claim seem reasonable but which then creates a new kind of absurdity. Again won’t rehearse all the examples here. Not least because this isn’t rocket science. It’s fairly obvious what’s going on but again if the desperate fan wants to cling on to anything and everything that’s another matter. Let’s now move on to ‘Dilwale would have done 300 without BM’! Because of course CE did this without the same competition!

        • Satyam: Now you are shifting the argument. I’m not contesting with the Super-hit tag and actually doesn’t accept BOI’s claim. The point was about totals and when I put that across you’ve moved to its super-hit status.

          Like

        • Not shifting anything. Neither side cites these things innocently. When people want to they focus on the tags, otherwise they go with the numbers. And so on. One has to look at the larger contexts. To say that one is simply quoting numbers without attaching any greater meaning to them is not something I buy. If those who are against SRK use the numbers to say he’s not big enough well then the fans also use the numbers they like to make the opposite claim. No one’s an honest broker in these debates. And the fans prove this at least as regularly as those who argue against the same stars. And again speaking for myself I’ve made the very same claims whether it’s HNY or ETT before it. On the numbers, on the ratings, on how the ratings are calculated and so on. For me it’s always an ‘all of the above’ deal. When one selects one thing or the other one is just trying to select the narrative that suits one. And so I am not really interested in one ‘limited’ claim or the other. I am more interested in the framing given to these ‘limited’ claims.

Agree he is in decline but I have heard that 15 years ago and every year since than.

Would you agree he is in top 5? If your answer is yes, is that a bad position to be in (top 5)?

With Dilwale, Raees, Fan coming up, do you see him dropping out of top 5 next year?

SRK, Aamir, Salman and HR will stay in top 5 no matter how you slice it. And I don’t see them dropping out of top 5 in next 3 years at minimum. By than SRK/Aamir/Salman will be like what, 53?

How many are in position like that?

          Like

        • but ‘top 5’ is rather arbitrary isn’t it? Why not ‘top 2’? why not ‘top star’? When SRK was doing better than Salman were you thinking of a ‘top 5’? Again your comment offers perfect evidence of what I’m trying to say. I’m not saying he’s in a ‘bad’ position though the decline point is proved by your own comment. You’re just negotiating the ‘top 5’ at this point! But in any case to repeat what I said maybe I just want to talk about the ‘top 2’!

    By Subhash K. Jha, Oct 21, 2015 – 10:41 hrs IST

Former lovers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone won’t allow their current relationships (with Katrina Kaif and Ranveer Singh, respectively) to come in the way of their professionalism.

One has now come to know that Ranbir and Deepika share an intense raw and lengthy love-making sequence in Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha, of the kind the two actors have never done before in their respective careers.

Says the source, “The sequence comes at a crucial point in the plot and there was no way that (director) Imtiaz Ali could either remove the love-making scene or tone it down. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone did the sequence like thorough professionals. Hopefully the censor board would treat the sequence with equal professionalism.”

Every time they do that I wonder whose idea was it? The Director’s or the DP’s?

At least with Anurag Kashyap you know it was his because he steals so many. In fact, I think that he probably reverse engineers scenes so that he can write a situation where he can have these set piece-y/show-offy shots, in the process imposing a false shape on the material, just so he can produce the desired effect in the viewer.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s steamy kiss from Tamasha axed!
    November 9, 2015 Seema Sinha 32266 reads 25 comments

Former love-birds, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone share a great chemistry on-screen and have a steamy lip-lock in their upcoming release, Tamasha. But now it is heard that the kissing sequence has been deleted from the film as the Censor Board found it too hot to handle.
According to reports, Imtiaz Ali’s movie has been certified with a U/A Certificate and has been issued five cuts. One of these cuts is a lingering kiss between Ranbir and Deepika. Sources in the Censor Board said that it is the lengthiest kiss — even longer and more passionate than the one that was seen between Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor in 1996 hit, Raja Hindustani. Reportedly, the remaining cuts in Tamasha have been made on the basis of dialogue. For instance, the term, ‘Apna Haath Jagannath’ and a character making a veiled reference to masturbation, has also been chopped.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Tamasha is all set to hit the screens on November 27.

not everything is done or made for the box office

if it was so, Imtiaz wont habe that ending (or treatment) as in Rockstar and wont have followed it up with Highway with Hooda when Ranbir was begging him to take him

If it was so, Bhansali would not have made Bajirao Mastani more than a decade after its shelving
he wont have chosen this release date (though i think he should move it to do justice to his own efforts & ‘passion’)

ps;; as for deepika, theres something personal in doing this film (and these deleted ‘explicit’ scenes)

Deepika is certainly the girl with the golden tattoo oops no, the ‘girl with the broken heart’

  35. Its just 1 week to go and I don’t see any buzz or interest about Tamasha. If I’m not busy, I’m planning to watch it 1st or 2nd day of its release. Don’t have much hopes and looks like this one’s a goner unless it has superlative content and springs a surprise hit.

  36. Ranbir’s last few movies have taken a toll on the buzz of this movie. Imagine this one coming after YJHD and even with the same promos, the movie will be ultra hot. This is now a true test of Ranbir’s star power. This would have opened 15 cr + when RK was hot, now am not so sure. Imtiaz though is yet to make a bad movie…There is always something interesting in his movies so I think movie might still be decent…A true test of star power is always after a couple of flops….The khans have done it before – SRK opened Don 2 pretty well after the debacle of Ra-1 and more so after the negative press he got, Salman has come through his bad phase…Hritik struggled a bit on this count (ZNMD was a poor opener which came in his bad phase), interesting to see what RK comes up with..
