Congratulations Manoj Kumar for Dada Sahab Phalke Award !

Veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar on Friday said the Indian government’s decision to honour him with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, comes as a “pleasant surprise”. He said it will take him some time to digest the news.
“It’s a pleasant surprise. I was sleeping, and I started getting calls from my friends. I thought they were kidding, but when I read the news myself, I realised that it’s for real,” Manoj Kumar, 78, told IANS over phone

Bharat ko finally Bharat Sarkar ne credit de hi diya.
Songs of Sanyasi were popular in those days, movie was a hit as well. Pran had one of his early good turns here.
Clerk was extremely horrible, followed by his Kalyug ki Ramayan.

Preferred his pre jingoistic Bharat avatar.
Liked his following films;
Himalay ki Godmein – was idealistic and much better than his desh bhakti jingoism.
Hariyali aur raasta – has lovely songs
Upkar – The only desh bhakti film of his I didn’t mind
Gumnaam – a thriller quite well made
Woh Kaun Thi – a mystery
Anita another mystery.
His later films became too violent.
After Shor I stopped watching them.

Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chairman
Pahlaj Nihalani as Censor Board Chief
Anupam Kher getting Padma Bhushan
Now Manoj Kumar getting Dadasaheb Phalke
Something is definitely wrong with the BJP government. Should keep politics away from cinema and give awards and recognitions and important positions to those who truly deserve.
Ab Manoj Kumar is award ko leke 5 daal tak bolte rahenge

Absolutely. This award is the annointed domain of Congress boot lickers only.
When Shashi Kapoor can receive it before Amitabh, to phir Manoj Kumar kya cheez hai?
Anyone remotely patriotic or displaying any leaning towards Indian Nationalism has to be sidelined by all means. And God forbid if anyone crossed the paths of Congress, woh to history ke dustbin ko relegate kiya jayega. Bechara Amitabh, jeetay ji apne ki sidekick ko award miltey hue dekhta rah gaya.
Hopefully BJP confers it on Amitabh next year and rights a few wrongs.
Btw, just for laughs, SRK received this for his performance in HNY!!

Cool! I dont think tony is supporting congress.
Amitabh was with congress for a long period. More explicitly than Shashi Kapoor ever was.

Shashi got it last year. But then Pran has also received it. It is very subjective. Now when Acedemy is termed racist with 6000 voting members then whatever you do with 2-3 certainly can be questioned.

Too Hindu??
So a mere observation on the lack of talent being awarded makes me a congress supporter??
Seriously people? You support gajendra Chauhan and thinks he’s worthy of that position? Or pahlaj nihalani muting every word remotely hinting to a sexual connotation?
On manoj Kumar — most of his performances were laughworthy and films were unintentionally hilarious. Awarding him the country’s most coveted honour in film deserves to be ridiculed. Period

I don’t think it is good for country to see everything with polarized view. I find most of the movies of that era not to my liking.
People can give same argument about Dev Anand or Pran or Shahshi Kapoor. Manoj Kumar acted and directed some iconic movies of his time. Are there more deserving people, sure. But he was also good during his time. Reading his wiki page will give enough ideas.

It’s so not classy to ridicule #ManojKumar and his work just cos you disagree with the govt. He’s a veteran actor who didn’t ask for this
You have issues with the award slam the govt its jury. Leave an old man whose work was relevant to post independence nationalism wave alone
Some liberalism is just disgustingly déclassé. Someone prob phoned him and said sir award come accept n he said great someone remembered me
Speaks to an era that a manojkumar\ motherindia were as iconic as a Bimal Roy\dobheegazameen. Nationalism today wd be laughed out of town
Elkazi was a nationalist. Dubey was a nationalist. Problem is not with the filmmakers but this belief that only liberal icons can exist
Outrage speaks more of modern prejudice than of quality then. Nationalism & liberalism coexisted then. So laugh at ourselves why don’t we
And if you must judge him for his bad films judge him in context of his time, his contemporaries, previous winners & their bad films.
This random he was nationalist I don’t like nationalism I don’t like the govt so let me pillory him is unfair and deeply illiberal.

Manoj Kumar’s jingoistic desh bhakti is like Sanghis (theirs is much much worse though, bagal me chhuri munh me vande mataram) – That’s why he got the award- LOL
His film Purab Pachim was extremely ridiculous.
Today the present govt along with their satellites are STILL all about this Purab Pachhim mentality while secretly envying the pachhim.
But I do like Manoj Kumar in his earlier films – when he was normal.
Though his acting was nothing to talk about.

It is not envying, it is called cultural conflict, there is nothing to envy west where culture is less developed and still on the way of evolution. Yes, there is insecurity of being influenced of westernization which is sometimes misunderstood or unexplored or prejudiced, but western culture is more wild and less values.
They dont have understanding of words like Dharma, Maryada, Guru, though they sometimes show interest try to adapt or understand.
Envy is beheading of people because they live different lifestyle, calling them infidels, executing and attacking everyone else like coward. It is that beast wild nature all over the world, which is spreading like cancer spreading from a corrupted book. Followers of such books see everything through glasses of envy, murder, killing, cowardice.

You are using a contemporary perspective to evaluate 40-50 yr old cinema, which was quite regressive. By that yardstick most of the Phalke winners did not deserve it, because they were all associated with cinema from that era. Why just attack Jingoism? Why not sexism, chauvinism, regionalism, and host of all other isms that existed in those movies?
The racism of Gone with The Wind would be skewered when viewed with a contemporary lens, yet it is celebrated as a classic.

munna, I never post links that are views of other people. Just news items.
The two links I want to post were the ones related to my response to ‘beheading’ etc brought up – not by me.
One is a picture of posters offering 11 lakhs to anyone who would shoot Kanhaiya Kumar, posted all over in Delhi.
The other from a news channel showing BJP youth leader offering money in lakhs to anyone who would cut the tongue of Kanhaiyya.
These two links were important to refute the charges of someone boasting of a superior culture.

Exactly. Thats what has been done above.
But my tweets were of a pictures of what I’m talking of.
I have been coming to this blog for so long. First I used to visit naachgaana and knew you all there, then here, though I never posted for a long time.
It’s discouraging to be dealt with in this manner when clearly the person doing this holds a rabid opposing view.
At least you and satyam are fair.
Please don’t allow this person to take over and bring the kind of atmosphere that is prevailing in the country because of the highhanded behaviour of govt and their sattelites and supporters

His name was unanimously recommended by a five-member jury comprising of singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Nitin Mukesh, Anup Jalota and writer Salim Khan. “Every award I’ve been honoured with, be it the National Award or the Padma Shree, has been big, but this one is the biggest, officially,” asserted Manoj Kumar, admitting that the feeling has yet to sink in.
He owed the name, Manoj Kumar, which he was to be known by in reel life and later in real life too, to his childhood idol. In Filmistan’s 1949 film, Shabnam, Dilip Kumar had answered to the call of Manoj and the name had remained in his memory bank for years.
However, the biggest gift Upkar gave him was the name Bharat. Three days after the release of the film, Manoj Kumar bumped into Filmistan studio’s boss, Sashadhar Mukherjee who thumped him hard on the back and boomed, “Hey Bharat, how are you?” The name stuck.

It should be revolving chair jury with people from say last 5 years national award winners in all category are voting members.
I am not sure why jury is small? Also it should be secret ballot. You don’t have to justify within shortlisted candidates.
