Hope the above turns out to be a good film…maybe never too late. Having said that, I feel Amitabh should have done the film with Kamal Haasan which Hassan’s talking of here…but I can understand his concerns with not getting the nuances of the Tamil language..

    **************

As chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, she expressed her excitement on how the publishing houses and film studios are coming together to collaborate on the ‘Word To Screen Market’ platform of the gala.

“We are humbled by the response, and it is great how the publishing houses are actively participating. I remember two years ago when we started, we had to really encourage the film studios to come forward and try out the idea of Word to Screen Market.

“But this year, the response is so overwhelming that we had to extend the programme into a two-day event,” said Rao, who has produced several films like “Delhi Belly,” “Dangal” and “Secret Superstar” along with her husband Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan.

Word to Screen Market is an initiative to bring authors and publishers close to film production houses and studios to encourage adaptation of books into films.

Aamir Khan to return with Satyamev Jayate

“Once Aamir finishes the promotions of his Diwali release, Thugs Of Hindostan, he will start focussing on the show. His team has begun the research, but the actor, who covers all aspects of a topic, wants everything to be perfect before it goes on air. This time, the superstar will deal with broader topics and those that affect GenNext like depression and unemployment, etc. The show, comprising around 10 episodes, will air post Ted Talks India.

  6. Rajkummar Rao gets a chance to dabble in a new genre and he excels thoroughly. He genuinely gives an earnest performance and is a treat to see him getting spooked, delivering monologues and behaving madly in love. He is sure to bring the house down when he loses his cool in front of Jana and Stree. Also watch out for him in the second half sequence when he’s trying to analyse Stree. He’s terrific. Shraddha Kapoor delivers a fine performance and has a mysterious air about her as per the character’s requirement. In the second half she gets better. Aparshakti Khurrana gives a great performance and he doesn’t get overboard. Same goes for Abhishek Banerjee. In fact he’s superb in the last one hour. Pankaj Tripathi is hardly there in the first half and he rocks big time in the second half. Vijay Raaz (Shastri) leaves a mark in the lone sequence. Flora Saini plays an important part with elan. Atul Srivastava (Vicky’s father) brings the house down in the scene where he talks to Rajkummar Rao about sex. Nora Fatehi is sizzling in the item number.

Stree Movie Review: Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao Are Terrific In Madcap Film
Stree Movie Review: Aparshakti Khurana steals many a scene, Pankaj Tripathi is in cracking form in this spine-tingling film.

The quality of the performances that Kaushik extracts from his actors lends Stree infectious flounce. Rajkummar Rao is terrific. Whether he is flummoxed, frightened or simply going along with the flow, he delivers with minimum apparent effort. Shraddha Kapoor is suitably icy as the enigmatic woman who traipses into the protagonist’s life and sets off the tremors.

Aparshakti Khurana, full of beans, steals many a scene. Abhishek Banerjee delivers a high-energy yet controlled performance as the friend who suffers the most at the hands of the eponymous ghost. Pankaj Tripathi is in cracking form, giving the narrative a booster-charge whenever he is on the screen. Atul Srivastava in the role of Vicky’s father leaves an impression in the handful of scenes he has in the film.

Stree plays an unwavering hand in demonstrating that dread can be unbridled fun when it serves a larger thematic purpose. Go watch this spine-tingling film. It is completely madcap but there is method in its manic madness.

  9. Came across this GoodReads review of Cofessions of a Thug:

    *************

Originally published in 1839, this is the book that gave the word “thug” to the English language and is the first novel to make Thuggee its central theme.

[The word thug means deceiver, from the Hindi verb, thugna, which means to deceive. Thug is correctly pronounced Toog, slightly aspirated. From Col. Philip Meadows Taylor, Confessions of a Thug, Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., London, 1839.]

Unlike most, if not all, later books to incorporate Thuggee, the hero, or anti-hero in Confessions, is a Thug with the story told from his POV. The plot gimmick in later novels are generally from the Anglo perspective, i.e., trying to stop the violence of the evil Thugs, sometimes with the English hero working under cover as in the John Masters novel, The Deceivers, which, if you are reading only one novel on Thuggee, Masters’ work should be the one.
In the Merchant-Ivory movie of Masters’ novel of the same name, they suggest that the English hero, working under-cover, has sex with Kali herself by showing shadows of the prostitute with whom the hero is stuggling which suggest she has four arms, as does Kali. (The Temple of Doom episode of the Indiana Jones series is a ridiculous portrayal of Thuggee which the Thugs were able to have the Indian government ban the showing of the movie.)

Confessions is a good read. Taylor was an East India Company officer who lived in the world of his novel, and who was also a friend of William Sleeman, the officer who is credited with crushing the Thuggee. [See Major W. H. Sleeman, Ramaseena, 1836, which describes the secret language used by the Thugs to communicate, and also includes transcripts of some of the confessions of captured Thugs. Sleeman came to be called Thuggee Sleeman for his successful work in suppressing Thuggee.]

I incorporated Thuggee into Shadow of the Tiger, the second of my Adventures in Second Sight series, set in 1896 in which my 17 year old heroine, Kyame Piddington, learns to use the yellow Ruhmal, the weapon of the Thugs. That required doing some fascinating research on Thuggee. Fortunately the Boston Athenaeum, of which I am a member, had the Taylor and Sleeman books in their original editions.
The most current books on Thuggee focus on whether the Thugs were the Kali devotees as portrayed by the East India Company, or were they just one more gang of violent dacoits, thieves? More opportunity for some fascinating reading.

So, may you experience: “Ultra Auroram et Gangem … beyond the dawn and the Ganges” … a sacred place of dreams.

It has trended worse than most Akshay Kumar films. His films usually open at around 12cr and finish at 120cr i.e. 10 x opening day. Gold has done alright only during holidays and 1st week end.

  15. Is it really true that Gold is distributed on commission basis? This is not a SS or Padman kind of topical film.

    Like

    • I think munna posted a tweet from a AA guy claiming Gold was distributed on commission basis. That is only half of the story. Excel (producers) sold the film to AA at all-india distribution price of around 60 cr. AA in turn gave it to sub-distributors in different territories on commission basis.

Gold is folding up at 105 cr nett cume. AA films has surely not recovered their investment, even though sub-distributors have not lost any money. So ultimately, it is a loss maker for its all-india distributor.

It needed 130 cr or so to ensure no one is in red. IF this is not a flop, then what is? Can the resident BO experts (and BOI fans by default) of this blog please explain???

      Like

      • And I have said the same thing m,any times before. Films like RaOne, Raees, Dilwale made losses at sub-distributor levels. Their All-India dalaal were in black. Yet, these films were classified as ‘average’ ignoring all the losses.

Now gold has all-india dalaal in red, sub-distributors in black. This is also ‘average’, ignoring the losses. Can appreciate the consistency here!

And on top of all such nonsense, the same parties will claim that films like SS or Padman are also ‘average’ because sub-distributors made only peanuts on commission basis, ignoring that all india distributors (the producers in these cases themselves) made enough profits. Wah!

        Like

        • And the worst example of such ridiculous verdicts was RaOne. Red Chillies was producers and All-India distributors themselves. Even with that kind of advantage, they somehow managed to break even (if you believe SRK’s PR) but sub-distributors were all in red after the movie fizzled out by first monday. But since it made ‘100 cr’, it was labeled as a ‘hit’ by certain quarters.

          Liked by 1 person

        • It was even more hilarious when you consider the pre-release rhetoric of SRK/Red Chilies and their well-wishers: PRIOR to release they would tout it as one of the most expensive films ever made in India, with stratospheric price tags like 150 or 175 crores; AFTER the film’s release it seemed the film was made for ten rupees and even 43 rupees was enough for it to be deemed a hit. (Meanwhile, the price tags of films of even smaller stars were deemed so high that no gross could ever make anything a clean hit, much less a super-hit!)

          Like

        • Expecting the same thing from Zero. With it coming so close to mega budget extravaganzas like TOH and 2.0, SRK’s PR is already trying to push it into that bracket by publicizing 180 cr budget for Zero. If the movie fizzles out on Monday, the budget will drastically come down 50 cr due to concessions from the government of Honolulu. And guyz like Taran and Nahata will be paid to endorse such claims, while BOI and its fanatic followers will keep ranting about it for next 5 years …

  21. Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao said that new avenues for filmmakers have emerged which is like an oppotunity for them. She said that if her 2011 debut directorial venture “Dhobi Ghat” would have released today it could have done better business primarily due to the changing taste and preferences of the audience.

Kiran received critical acclaim for “Dhobi Ghat”, which had her superstar husband Aamir Khan in the lead, besides Prateik Babbar and Monica Dogra.

“The world has changed in the last five to seven years hugely. My film released in the beginning of January in 2011 and it was beginning of multiplexes. Today, opportunities are endless and people are accustomed to watching different kind of cinema thanks to the internet and OTT platform. There is a better universe for small films. I think ‘Dhobi Ghat’ would have certainly got different reception if it would have been released seven years later,” Kiran told PTI.

As a director, Kiran thinks, with the emergence of new avenues for filmmmakers to show their work, things have changed for the positive.

“Today one can make a feature film, documentary, short film, something for the OTT platform and there will be someone who will watch it. There is whole new world for us and I am happy,” she said.

But her approach to cinema has not changed much, as she believes every creative person is drawn to a certain kind of subjects.

“…There is something that we are more interested in. I find it a bit odd. I have tried to bend myself by trying a different genre but I am interested in same sort of things and then you make peace with it and you realise ‘I am an excavator of this kind’,” she said.

She said, “I am interested in marginalised… in women. They will find reccurrence in my work.”

Kiran said that she is not someone who would get lured by the commercial trappings of cinema. “I don’t watch that kind of films myself. I suspect one tends to make a film that one likes to watch. I am not into big potboilers,” she said.

Kiran, who is currently busy with Jio MAMI film festival’s ‘Word to Screen’ initiative, is also close to finish writing her next directorial venture.

“I am writing something. I will have a script well before the end of the year. I am hoping to have something new. I will have human drama in my film. At the moment no actors are in my mind as I have not finished writing,” she said.

  24. It seems Bhansali may work with Tiger for his next as Ranveer dont have dates in near future. Also, this rubbishes Salman’s PR articles that his next after Bharat will be Bhansali’s film. Bhansali has moved moved on from his Salman fascination days long back. Also, whether Adi Chopra will greenlight another sequel to Tiger franchise will ultimately depend upon if Bharat can mint money or not.

The way things are progressing in the industry, Ranveer and Tiger are increasingly getting the best deals. If Zero cant live up to expectations, Dhoom 4 will fall from SRK’s wishlist into the laps of Ranveer/Tiger. In fact, big budget plans of Salute and Don 3 will not take off if Zero makes losses.

    *****************

After ‘Padmaavat’, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to start his next project. However, unlike his last three films, this one would not be with Ranvee Singh but Tiger Shroff. The film will apparently be based on the book of author Amish Tripathi.

According to the reports, contrary to the speculations, the book is not ‘Immortals of Meluha’. The book is reportedly yet to be released and would hit the stores at around the same time as the film’s arrival. Tiger and SLB have had several meetings in this regard. Although nothing has been finalised yet, Tiger is working on his schedule as he apparently does not want to miss out working with one of his favourite directors.

The actor will next be seen in ‘Student OF The Year 2’, which also stars debutantes Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.

In many ways, these 3 films (TOH, Zero and Bharat) are v crucial for the future of Khandom. While Srk/Salman may be fighting for immediate relevance in the face of Padmaavat/Sanju (and probably Simmba), for Aamir its the next decade of his career in line.

[Aside: not that Kiran Rao needs to “make” anything of Aamir, she is a serious and talented person in her own right: I really really liked Dhobi Ghaat (the oddness of casting Prateik Babbar notwithstanding).]

        • Kiran, a liability…!? Even as a joke it is a terrible thing to say.

Kiran has played a big part in his life, career, his social sensibility and activities…she is in fact a big part of his post Mangal Pandey ( 2005) success story. I do hope that Aamir has sense enough not to get distracted by ittybitty ‘ gilahariyaan’ around him. But Aamir himself has continuously acknowledged both Reena and Kiran. Watch his recent interview with a Chinese media team that came all the way to Maharashtra, did shramdaan in the interiors, had a fabulous interview session with Aamir at his home. The lady asked the right questions, Aamir answered freely and all in all it was probably one of the best Aamir has done. He spoke about his career, his family, the two ladies…it was fun, a revelation.

Kiran ‘s new film …I am not sure if Aamir will do a role in it. Methinks she may wish to test whether she can attract audience without having Aamir. But I will be happy if he does at least a small cameo.

        • The whole charm of multi-starrers has been lost because contemporary stars are for the most part too insecure to do a genuine multi-starrer (they trot out contractual clauses about who will throw how many punches; can’t even imagine a star of Bachchan’s stature doing Kaala Pathar or Amar Akbar Anthony today), if they appear in a film with multiple meaty roles they will ensure the casting is such that it gets tagged “an ensemble cast”. The last film I can think of that might qualify was Rang de Basanti, and even there the other actors were not major Hindi stars — but still must give credit to Aamir for being OK with that kind of set-up, where some of the best moments etc. belonged to others in the movie (culminating with Siddharth towards the end). By contrast, for all the fake love for ’70s cinema that SRK/Farah Khan professed, we’d have co-stars like Zayed Khan or Shreyas Talpade in Main Hoon Na or Om Shanti Om. It’s a free country so one can do what one likes, but it does lead to a more impoverished cinematic experience for the audience….

Same was the case in Kabhi Khushi Kabie Gham where Srk played role of Bachchan’s elder son quite efficently and Bachchan’s role was limited in the film.

Now comming to Thugs of Hidostan, i think Amir will hardly leave any stone unturned to prove himself better as far as performance is be concerned.Bachchan at this stage of carrer has become a caricature and nothing else. He should consider himself lucky for this role alongwith Amir..Neither he is a good actor nor any star anymore..Just see the openings of his solo films which usually are in the range of 10-15% only,..So please be within limits while trying to prove that Bachchan is still on the top of current generation.

“The five films include ‘Woh Kaun Thi’, an official remake of 1964’s original. It’s very close to our heart. Then there is ‘Radha Kyun Gori Mein Kyu Kala’ which we will start filming soon,” Kapoor added.

The new production house will collaborate with none other than Amitabh Bachchan for one of the films.

I watched Stree and definitely reccomend it, even though the second half has some loose moments where the makers try a little too hard in evoking laughter out of situations that seem a little stretched. Nevertheless, its a rather unique genre blend which has never been explored properly in hindi cinema except for an occasional GoGoa Gone or Bhoot Bangla. And this is a story from an urban Indian legend which is so rooted. It also makes for some interesting social commentary that deserves to be seen.

Some fantastic humour and genuinely creepy moments make this a good weekend watch. Andboth Rajkumar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi are a hoot, the former especially who derived thunderous applause for his facial expressions towards the climax. How often do we get to see something like that?

      • I saw Bareilly ki Barfi the other day and it was a pretty poor film: began on a relatively strong note but went downhill, with some shoddy characterisations and a silly ending. And the character of Bitti just seemed “off” to me, in the way that Deepika was in “Cocktail” (it isn’t about being liberated or unconventional; it’s about being utterly unaware of what the social conventions are — that’s what makes these characters NOT a refreshing look at a “spunky small-town girl” but in fact the product of some male fantasy). Even apart from that there was more than a little condescension at “small town” folks (the idea that a character like Bitti, who is educated, works in the electricity department and routinely watches Hollywood films, would think that “I want to break up with you” means “mein tumhe todh doonga”, is absurd — certainly not in the era of the “break-up song”!). Definitely would agree that Rajkumar Rao was the best thing about the film, he was quite funny…

  34. @Qalandar — you have written that Kiran would have added intellectual rigour to Aamir’s persona. Let me add what I have gleaned through a decade and half of following the star (and his personal life on display).

Aamir has spoken once about growing up with a feeling that Hindi cinema was looked down upon, and his own wish to do something about it. He has spoken about seeing South Bombay kids laughing at Hindi films of the time. So cousin Mansoor and Aamir decided that they would make Indians respect Hindi cinema, not laugh at them. Aamir did lose his way for a while post QSQT, when he did those terrible early nineties disasters, but he has also spoken about crying while he realised what he had got himself into, of resolving to make cinema he believed in, or leave the industry ( it is there in the Chinese interview). Sarfarosh, Lagaan …these were his baby steps in the right direction. Then Kiran came along post his divorce ( late 2002)…and steered him, assisted by her own sensibility. Aamir has spoken laughingly about Kiran being a typical Kolkota- Mumbai- Delhi product, an art film aficionado. He helped her understand fifties Hindi cinema, it’s importance….I have a feeling theirs is a marriage of minds.

The Tom Cruise flick earned another $1.56 million (-31%) on Friday to bring its cume up to $198.9m. So, yeah, it should be passing $200m domestic by the end of this sentence. And it opened with a boffo $28m in China on Friday, so unless it dropped dead there on Saturday (not likely) it should be sailing over the $600m worldwide mark today or very early tomorrow. At a glance, it should earn $6.345m (-22%) over the Fri-Sun frame and $8.2m over the Fri-Mon frame for a new $205m domestic cume. That puts it within spitting distance of the (unadjusted) domestic total of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ($209m in 2011).

Meanwhile, Disney reissued Incredibles 2 into 2,890 theaters over the holiday for the intent of getting the Pixar sequel over $600m domestic.

    • Nepotism in any private enterprise is the sole prerogative of the private enterprise. If it harms, it will only harm that private enterprise, and if not controlled it will bankrupt the enterprise. But it does not harm the public in any way. So if KJo decides to bet his precious money on any starkid, its his risk. Why should public be concerned. As for entertainment and fans, starkids come and starkids go, rarely 1-2 have stuck beyond 5 yrs. Movies like Stri with no Godfather-backed actors prove that talent and script will always win.
IMHO, Public Service (ie Government) is the only place where we ought to be concerned about Nepotism; as it directly affects each and every citizen of the country.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Actually nepotism even in private enterprise DOES harm the public: not only because employment and advancement opportunities don’t get decided on merit, but also because, more broadly, it fosters a culture where corporate success is a function of access to networks rather than to innovation. And that is something we see in India everywhere, with most of our corporates succeeding based on access, insider opportunities, NOT because “hey we are just better than the competition.” And that is what is behind, perhaps not the initial success of something like Reliance or Adani in its initially chosen field, but their expansion into every area under the sun — complete crony capitalism.

        • “…, it fosters a culture where corporate success is a function of access to networks rather than to innovation. And that is something we see in India everywhere, ..”
Agreed, and this proves my point. Nepotism in Indian enterprises harms them because it does not foster innovation. Which explains the abysmal ranking of Indian companies on any index or scale of Innovative Breakthroughs. They essentially remain me-too enterprises, and by-an-large wither away from any global competition. They then only compete in the domestic Indian market, and survive through corruption and nexus dealings. Something similar goes on in China as well, except that their Government has banished unions and created a huge labor arbitrage cost advantage vis-a-vis the West, and have thus made a mark globally. If the West starts demanding equivalent labor conditions of Chinese companies, they too will wither away.

Take IT for example. Its been a solid 30 yrs since Indian IT mushroomed, yet they are nowhere in innovation. Labor Price Arbitrage is the only reason for Indian IT to have lasted 3 decades. The top players actively foster regional or parochial networks amongst their employees; that hinder the rise of un-connected talented individuals. But again, the harm is to the organization itself. As Artificial Intelligence takes over, the margins of labor arbitrage will also dwindle, and thus Indian IT will find itself amongst withering industries in the global marketplace. They then will only compete for a shrinking domestic pie.
But, all of this nepotism still did not harm the taxpayer in any way. These are self-inflicting wounds to companies themselves. You and I do not lose our money, as long as we are not invested in these companies.

          Like

        • Nice summation of Chinese and Indian scenarios. China is actually much better placed due to its cheap labor advantage in manufacturing sector (although robotics will change all that in coming decades) and the current huge investment by its govt in AI. As far as Indian IT is concerned, the ripples are already being felt everywhere. As we move into ‘smart’ development era of software, the indian bench-strenth is increasingly becoming redundant and pretty useless. What the next gen of apps will require is highly specialised set of few skilled people. Indian IT will die out in next 2 decades (at least its massy appeal will).

    My review of Searching:

It’s amazing to see how there are newer filmmakers and ideas that refuse to cater to the tried and tested and are always keen on pushing boundaries to give us rather unique and immersive experienes. Searching is one such film which is the first one of its kind and carries the story forward through conversations and events entirey through social media.

Made by debutant Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho who had made a name for himself in the American Pie and Harold & Kumar series before, Searching is a taur and engaging thriller that doesn’t compromise on pace right from the firstscene. This kind of film is more difficult to conceive and realize than what the effortless direction and fluidity in the narrative flow would have you believe. Even as the writing is crisp and sharp, the film benefits greatly from creating a scenario that the social media generation would so relate to. A father’s search for his missing daughter is the basic premise that leads to a satisfying conclusion, and the background score which presents a curious mix of dread and mystery is one of the major highlights along with Jim Cho’s natural and convincing performance.

The film is also filled with some extremely smart and well executed shots and can be easily called the Film of the year. Lets just hope this low budget, small film finds enough takers across the world. If watching different and exciting cinema is your forte, watch it by all means and serve your inner cinemaholic some much needed fodder!

Ranbir Kapoor was great and he had to be. Not surprised. Paresh could have done better IMO. I now understood why Hirani wanted someone who can give more to that role. Sunil Dutt deserved a better performance. I mean Paresh Rawal wasn’t bad. But Sunil Dutt is pretty much the Hero and savior of Sanju’s life. Somehow that got reflected more from Ranbir’s or Vicky’s Kaushal’s words/actions rather than Paresh’s performance. Maybe it’s Hirani’s fault here. I mean I felt very emotional when Sanju gets a chance to clarify with Kamli but didn’t feel much when Sunil Dutt dies. Something missed here. Vicky Kaushal was fantastic. Despite Ranbir pretty much mimicking a well known and charismatic personality Vicky was never over shadowed. Dia Mirza and Anushka Sharma had nothing in their roles though.
Finally I would say this movie DID it’s bit to clarify Sanjay Dutt’s stand especially in blast case. 50% of the movie was around the blast case with Sanju getting a chance to clarify regarding why he had gun or his involvement in the case. So when Mr. Hirani says he wasn’t clearing dirt, it’s a straight lie. He was. Nothing wrong in it. But if think you are honest you should say it IMO,

As face-off between Sonu Sood and Kangana Ranaut escalates, it has now emerged that what was called patchwork shoot in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi has now blown into a major reshoot and will take about 45 days, Mid-day reports. Sonu Sood, who left the film which will now be directed by Kangana, has been replaced by Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.

The report said what was termed as a 10-day patchwork shoot has now become a 45-day schedule and many scenes from director Krish’s original cut will be shot again. Krish had reportedly left the film as he had already committed his dates to NTR biopic down south and Kangana stepped into his role.

“During the first screening, the producers noted that the movie didn’t adhere to the script written by KV Vijayendra Prasad. There were glaring discrepancies in character establishment,” a source is quoted as saying. After the reshoot began, they felt “they would have to re-shoot several portions, if they were to be honest to the script”. After a meeting with the producers, an additional Rs 20 crore were sanctioned for the shoot.

Hollywood action director Nick Powell is reportedly onboard to shoot certain action sequences and a special song with be added to the film.

There are affairs with co-stars, fall-outs with co-stars, taking other people’s works credits, or then she re-writes the film or re-directs the film mid-way through.

It was always very obvious that this time around she has fallen out with the director (who she has now replaced herself) and the main hero (Sonu Sood- who she has replaced with another actor).

Talks of Kangana doing only patchwok as director or Sood being unwilling at work with a woman as director always sounded like lame excuses.

  61. Stree Has Huge Monday – Set To Be SUPER HIT
    Monday 03 September 2018 22.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Stree has had a an excellent Monday as collections look set to be in the 8.50 crore nett range as the Janmashtami holiday has given the collections a boost. Even if we take out the Janmashtami factor it is still a fantastic hold and the film is likely to emerge a SUPER HIT. The Monday business of Stree is higher than the day two business of Gold and Satyameva Jayate

The film will be around the 40 crore nett mark in just four days and the first week can easily go to 52-55 crore nett depending on what level the film settles post the Monday holiday. A big Monday was on the cards after that huge Sunday which clocked over 14 crore nett but with 8.50 crore nett apprx it has surpassed the expectations.

There have been two other runaway SUPER HITS this year in Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety and Raazi and this film looks on the line of those as the fair value for Monday looks a drop of 20% which is extraordinary. Where the lifetime goes comparatively with Sonu Ke Tito Ki Sweety and Raazi will depend on how the releases over the next few weeks affect the film but on this trend the film could go anywhere.

I like his films from the seventies, most of which are multi-starrers where he unassumingly takes away the limelight from established stars – not only with his baritone, but also his silences! But once he became ‘one man industry’ (that his fans gloat about), he was quite intolerable. Coolie was in 1983? He was around 40 at that time and that his last peak as a ‘star’. Not much to talk about in the next 20 years till his comeback as grand old man of bollywood, that too riding on adi chopra and kjo films! (And we look down upon Salman for spending 10 years in limbo between 1999 and Wanted.) He has done some interesting work since then – no doubt, although interspersed with many nonsensical acts and silly films.

I think He is v lucky to get this ToH deal at the age of 75. If the film lives up to its expectations (lets just focus on BO aspect since its an Acharya direction after all), it will give enough fuel for him to go on acting till his eighties (or till his physical strength holds up).

Aamir (on the other side) has actually done the best work of his career starting from forties (same age when Bachchan tumbled into oblivion with flops and politics and bankruptcy and whatnot). If MB series happens, he will be acting till his early sixties for sure. But I wont be surprised if he goes into full-time direction and production after that. Hanging around as a grand oldman onscreen may not be his cup of tea …

      • Must add that Bachchan as old man is nowhere near to the hamming of Dilip Kumar as grand old man! The edge he had over the likes of Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor in his peak, was hammed away to glory!

    Monday, 3 September, 2018, 02:20

The clear winner this week at the Chennai Box-Office is Nayanthara’s Imaikka Nodigal, which had a late release. The film which was supposed to release on Thursday had a late release in select screens but opened in all screens by Friday. It has grossed approximately Rs 1.63 Cr in three days and is number one.
Nayanthara has pulled off the impossible as her Kolamavu Kokila, a proven hit entered third week and still holds on to the number two position. The film has grossed a whopping Rs 4.73 Cr in 17 days. Nayan is the real Lady Superstar by a mile.
At number three is Prakash Raj – Vikram Prabhu’s Radha Mohan directed 60 Vayathu Maaniram, which is getting good reviews.
And at number four is the Hindi horror film Stree, which is carrying good reports. Geetha Govindam continues to hold good at number five.

I blame KJ for his inability to keep his flock together, chosing lousy folks over committed and dedicated colleagues.

      • Kejriwal has also succumbed to the autocratic approach that characterizes most Indian political parties, with very little room for dissent — his “technocratic” bent was always a bit problematic from his earliest days, but quite sad to see old-timers from the party leaving in droves.

        • Even in significantly big parties, i have not seen their 90% senior leaders quitting within 2 years of its power. Its like BJP/Congress losing its entire leadership barring Modi/Rahul (which might not be a bad idea).
This looks to be more than a case of just dissent. None of his colleagues left him because they disagreed with the idea of KJ as their leader or they had selfish motives. Usually this is the case, but not in AAP’s case. It has to be with all the factors that a leader should not have.
The fact that KJ is mostly silent over arrest of left wing leaders is shocking for me. He should have been on the roads or on strike. However he only choses to do so when he finds IAS officers not respecting him/his ego hurt. When was the last time he agitated for the people of India/Delhi/Punjab?

  70. Top 5 stars at Box Office

No 1: Aamir Khan – Despite his absence which is like a curse in showbiz, he remains of top. The competition is unable to followup of their hits.

No 2 Salman Khan – The competition. The halo is gone. Is this momentary?

No 3 Ranbir Kapoor – Sanju. 300+ Cr.

No 4 Akshay Kumar – 9 100+ Cr. Prestige Films. But has a glass ceiling, which undermines his stardom. Will 2point0 be able to break? The world believes so.

No 5 Ranveer Singh / Ajay Devgn – Their next is looking HIT on paper already.

    • How is Ranbir #3?! Sanju was 300, but after a string of disasters and under-performers!

PS — much as I can’t stand SRK, to not have him in the top 5 is a bit much! He is a bigger box office draw than Devgan, and probably has been at all points for nearly a quarter of a century.

      • Q, It’s more to do with Akshay who unlike last year, is not able to get a superhit this year. The perception that he cannot break the glass ceiling is helping Ranbir.
There is also a case of Ranveer Singh here who had a huge hit in Padmaavat. I am waiting for Simbaa which i think can upturn all rankings as we might see a new No 2.

        Like

        • One point on Ranveer is that the leading lady — more often than not Padukone — plays a huge role in his hits. This is relevant given the kinds of films these are; ie whatever one may say about Deepika in a random film, on terrain like Bajirao Mastaani or Padmaavat she is obviously a major draw. That isn’t something you can say about (eg) Anushka in PK or of course any of the actresses in Salman’s recent films; same with Akshay. Take those historicals with Padukone away, and “Gunday” might be Ranveer’s natural level; no one even showed up for films like “Kill Dill” even on the first weekend…

For these sorts of reasons — how many can stars pull in for their bread and butter film, just any film they show up in — hard to argue with Aamir and Salman on top, with SRK, Hrithik and Akshay in there behind them (admittedly the question of what the “regular” Aamir or Hrithik film is is not easy to answer, in the former case because Aamir often tries to do quality films, in the latter case because Hrithik is from Bizarroworld)…

But Sangharsh was brilliant in its own way. The song – Sonu Nigam’s Mujhe Raat din, Aashutosh’s over the top villanous act, Akshay’s sankritised dialogs which got claps and whistles in theatres, Preity’s fiesty character and Tanuja Chandra’s direction was good.

Ghoul (Netflix), another good series. Would love to see more of India/Netflix connected series. Sacred Games and now this, both very well done. The setting and mood is very well captured. Interesting concept, anyone that is Muslim is by default a terrorist unless proven otherwise. It certainly feels like we’re not that away from this concept.

Welcome 2, not like the first part. How the hell does John Abraham became an actor? He makes Akshay Kumar look like Dilip Kumar. Guy has no expression, no body language, nothing, except steroids body. Having said that, do have to give him credit for producing some decent films and carving out a space for himself which is very hard to do in this dog eat dog Bollyworld.

PadMan, had no expectation from this film based on most of the comments (typically aamir fans) on this forum. I thought it would be waste of time but wife wanted to watch it. Turned out to be a decent watch. One thing for sure, I would rather watch an Akshay film than SRK film (and this is coming from a SRK fan). At least there is a good message/story in many of recent Akshay films. Of course some of it is politically driven but, they’re decent films.

MOM, another good film. Sridevi owns it and I don’t think there are many who can pull it off like how she did it. Madhuri has nothing on Sridevi.

    Comments:

I wish there was little less discussion on boxoffice, actually less pulling down of other actors and films (and this is usually done by fans of a particular actor, and let’s not pretend like they don’t, just go thru any thread); and more progressive talks. Let’s talk about movies, songs, actors, etc of yester year and current and put up information and talk/debate about it. With such a rich history of films we have, I’m sure it would be a good conversation instead of constant crore talks and constant bashing of other actors/films.

Donald Trump; Probably the dumbest president ever in the whole world. This guy is a pure fraud, can’t believe good 30% of USA still believes blindly everything this man says.

Cow: Not sure how much of it is true or false but there are many incidents which are reported of Gaurakshak lynching/killing people in the name of protecting cow (I assume many incidents goes unreported/undetected). I’ve seen forwarded messages on social media that 9 out of 10 biggest slaughter house in India are owned by Hindus. How are they able to run this business legally when you have government banning consumption of beef in some states? And why aren’t these Gaurakshak going after the mass killer of cows and instead taking lives of loners? Just doesn’t make sense how this Gaurakshak business works.

Another thing I find odd is that in USA, there are many Subways owned by Patels who thinks like Gaurakshak, sends money to India for Gaurakshak but has no problem selling Cow meat in their own store, go figure.

I eat beef but if there’s a law passed tomorrow that says no beef eating in USA, I would be perfectly okay giving it up. But then don’t tell me that USA will be the biggest supplier of beef.

    • The rich — those who own large companies — are always able to get away, only the poor and weak are targeted, and for most of the victims even charges of cow slaughter or smuggling aren’t even established. Thousands of traditional pastoral communities (some Muslim, others Hindu) herd cattle, but in some areas these are the people who are being targeted, even though for these people there is no question of slaughtering cattle as that is their biggest asset (conversely, many farmers of all communities are upset at cow protection efforts because earlier they used to sell aged cattle, but now that market is collapsing; the “gaushalas” that are acquiring cattle are owned by local bigwigs but there have been scandals around over-crowding, ill-treatment, and just “housing” of cows without any regard to their welfare)– but what happens is that when some bigots hear a Muslim name they feel emboldened because for consumers of TV news who are unfamiliar with ground realities in rural India they jump to only one conclusion (i.e. many of these gaurakshak groups are auditioning for greater publicity and visibility, and with bigotry on the rise they can always count on at least some support; an extremely ugly climate)– I have met multiple people from big cities who told me that until these lynchings became an issue they weren’t even aware that there WERE Muslim pastorals, LOL! [Meanwhile, out of fear of attacks, many Muslim pastorals have given up their cattle — which of course are then acquired by others who get an asset at distressed sale prices; it’s a sordid conjunction of extortion and expropriation.]

      • what happens when you read incendiary biased western media narrative and get excited!!
“What is different from mob violence and the Christian lynchings is that their lynching had the approval of society. Just look at the crowds collected to witness and enjoy the lynching (photos available online). In contrast, Indian society has not approved of lynching. It is simply another mob-violence crime. But given their guilt, the Christians under Congress and Christian-influenced media-western media cleverly and mischievously planted the “Lynching” concept in the public domain only after ModiSarkar came into power. During the ten years of Congress also there were many killings by mobs but there was no such ranting and raving about “Lynching” as a terminology and label as it is now. The US has a history of over 4000 lynchings of blacks and that figure may not be accurate as there is no proper record of these crimes:”
“The Congress and the media inserted this term into mob violence that existed in India long before ModiSarkar came into power. In fact, the incidents of lynching under ModiSarkar are far lesser in number than under the criminal Congress during their term. A tweet by A.Ranganathan shows that there over a dozen lynchings under the Congress in 2013 alone. So, if one digs deeper into the ten years of Sonia and Congress, they would exceed the number of incidents in the four years of ModiSarkar. This is not to justify any killing but to indicate how the media and the Congress have labelled and created a terror-syndrome called “Lynching” which has managed to fool even the SC. This is nothing but mob violence and mob frenzy which has existed for a long time but has surely been declining with greater awareness among citizens.”
“And there is technically no lynching in India because society does not approve it as it did in Christianity. Our society does not hold public hangings or beheadings or burning at the stake as a socially-approved practice in any state or in any society in this land. ”
“Either way, a law on total ban on cow-slaughter is required across India. That itself will stop a lot of crimes. But on priority, a law that punishes cow-theft and cow-smuggling severely will by itself deter criminals”

Jack Dorsey said Twitter was meant to be a ‘public square’, but fell victim to ‘abuse, harassment, troll armies, propaganda through bots’.

Twitter Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey on Wednesday told United States legislators that the social media network was “unprepared and ill-equipped” for the misinformation campaigns that have plagued it for the last few years.

“We’re now removing over 200% more accounts for violating our policies,” the Twitter CEO added. “We’re identifying and challenging 8-10 million suspicious accounts every week.”

He added: “And we’re thwarting over a half million accounts from logging in to Twitter every day.” Dorsey also rejected allegations that Twitter operates on the basis of political bias, AFP reported.

Democratic Party Senator Mark Warner said that he was skeptical that Facebook and Twitter would be able to address the problems of manipulation on their own. “Congress is going to have to take action here,” he said.

  99. Watching Mangal Pandey for half an hour a day. Surprised to see a well made movie touching social and political issues with a passion. The caste conflicts, the religious taboos, woman’s status and the way the rulers treated the natives.

Watched the first half of Tubelight and liked it to some extent because of its emotional appeal and the pleasing visuals.

Not all failed films are bad and not all hits are good. One can like certain things about a movie and may not like the full movie.

    • I watched Mangal Pandey in the theatre, 2005, liked it quite a bit. It is a well scripted, directed, enacted film, with terrific music from ARR. And yet, something off …perhaps the Bollywoody fictional retellng of MP’s personal life? Well, not much is known about Mangal save a page of bare bones material,so the makers had to work on that and fictionalise it in a popular manner. But I loved all the details of the time, and in fact ( in retrospect) find it less Bollywoody compared to Bhansali’s loud melodrama, the more recent Bajirao Mastani.

For BM, plenty of material was available — and yet they chose to Bollify the film to a laughable degree. There was no mention of Bajirao’s use of guerilla warfare tactics in the marshes and overgrown hills of Maharashtra. I loved the character of Bajirao’s wife, found Bajirao himself good only in patches — and was totally unimpressed with the characterisation of Mastani. She was an athletic warrior, fine. But there was little depth of passion in a woman supposed to be in love. And yet this film was a huge hit, where Mangal Pandey failed. About MP, I remember being intrigued by the story of the Parsi opium merchant and his involvement with shameful British trade in this regard. Later, reading the novels of Amitav Ghosh, I got a clearer picture of the opium trade topic.

      Must check out some’failed’ films.

      • MP didn’t quite fail. This was always exaggerated at the time. Put differently today the film with that opening (biggest of its time) and trending would do a lot more than Bajirao did! I’m serious. Now of course one has to ‘adjust’ for many things across this time period but my point is that you can easily calculate what a massive opener today would do in week 1 (let alone the biggest) and then what it would do on the same trending. Put differently Sultan has much worse trending and it’s a 300 crore film. TZH is more or less the same (factoring in GST) or maybe somewhat better. So again we have to move beyond these common perceptions first of all. Now it is true that the standards prevalent at the time MP released were somewhat higher on trending. But still this film wasn’t a failure (or I am willing to accept the ‘failure’ of this film if we re-calibrate so many ‘successes’ over the last 20 years or more). A disappointment for sure (again using the standards of those days) on trending. Clearly it wasn’t loved or anything. But there isn’t quite the gap between it and many other ‘hits’ sense that one might think. The only thing that has happened is that standards have been lowered dramatically. Now it’s a 100, 200, 300 cr and no questions asked deal. If anything smaller releases still have to show enough trending. This is the perversity of Bollywood.

Getting back to the film again this is a historical or period drama with masala elements rather than a masala film outright. And the ‘balance’ perhaps didn’t please anyone entirely. But also, and to repeat, an older point, you cannot get this kind of film to be a huge success anyway. It doesn’t end well for the hero! In contemporary India it’s just extremely hard to make very major successes out of major films that end this way. Or that offer dark commentary on the reigning ideologies of the present. Talaash is a classic example of this. MP among other things also offers at points a dark commentary on what today we might define as a certain kind of corporate logic. There are a few key scenes in this sense.

But all of this still gets back to the larger point. We automatically adopt a kind of defensive posture with films that we think are good but that didn’t work at the box office (in some sense). The opposite is also assumed. This is just completely the wrong way to judge the worth of a film. Sure, the box office tells you something about the audience, it also illuminates all kinds of ideological issues, it certainly can be read as cultural commentary. But all this is still different from the question surrounding the value of a film. Even if audiences didn’t take to MP in the true sense this too is hardly surprising. There are much greater films that the audiences didn’t take to and not only in India. It’s always unfortunate when this happens but it’s just reality. Cinema is such a commercial medium that there is always this perennial struggle between the more meaningful film (large scale production, middle cinema or even at the arthouse end) and its box office fortunes. It’s just a medium that requires too much investment even for the smaller film. The maker of a movie is therefore always compromising. Even the most celebrated directors in history rarely got the chance to makes the films they truly wanted without any consideration for the box office. Yes, many directors have created extraordinary works working with such compromise but that’s a different matter.

KANK opened at 28 Cr and finished at around 44 Cr. Budget 48 Cr. Verdict Semi Hit.

All figures from our beloved BOI.

I’m very sure BOI has systematically reduced MP’s verdict – I’m sure it’s been semi hit, above average, average (what Wikipedia says BOI has) and now flop – even Wikipedia can’t keep up with BOI. Point is MP can hardly be termed a trade flop, maybe audience rejected it but then KANK and many others should follow the same logic.

      • Mangal Pandey is actually constructed fantastically well, precisely because just about everything we know about him comes from the records of his trial (hardly the most impartial forum). The film’s writer does an excellent job in using every one of the elements mentioned in the trial records — the bhang/Mangal Pandey’s intoxication, the way he fired the shot, etc. — but in imbuing them with a different “meaning” than that construed by the tribunal. The subtitle of the film’s English version — “The Ballad of Mangal Pandey” — needs to be taken seriously, as the film weaves dry trial testimony into the stuff of legend. More broadly, as LS you note, a lot of the stray elements also tie into broader themes from the period (stated differently, they aren’t just there because they mean something to us TODAY — a huge contrast with something like Bajirao Mastaani — but because they meant something BACK IN THE DAY): the implication of Indian merchants in British colonialism (not just Parsis; opium, for instance, doesn’t just explain what Britain was up to in China, but ALSO how Rabindranath Tagore’s grandfather made his money, why Bombay was so important, etc.); the strangeness of the corporation in the form of the East India Company on Indian terrain (an entity like that was completely alien to Indian life); even the easy camaraderie between the British and Indian soldier is a historically grounded dramatization of the fact that Anglo-Indian social relations were much more relaxed in the 18th and early 19th centuries, “hardening” under the influence of the rise of conservative theories of race/society/inferiority of the non-white races/religions, and of course by the impact of 1857 as well (Toby Stephens beds an Indian widow; that would be hugely hugely frowned upon BY THE BRITISH 20 years later, in the 1870s, whereas there are very many examples of Anglo-Indian marriages in the pre-1850 period). Very many films have represented the political oppressiveness of colonialism (some in more outlandish form than others), but few popular films have represented the strangeness of the Company’s enterprise, and that mixture of desire and humiliation that is the lot of the colonized, in the way that Mangal Pandey did. Superb stuff.

      • I had enjoyed Mangal Pandey when it had released. However i couldn’t watch it second time.
Mangala Pandey had a very linear narration like Mohenjodaro.

I will take 3 examples of historicals – The movies like Bajirao, Bhagat singh or Jodha Akbar. These three had a great aura to the hero. That was missing in Mangal Pandey. It may be intentional but the movie couldn’t involve the way the 3 films i mentioned did.
Maybe that part of history, as correctly pointed by Q, is unknown to most Indians as we only have imperial records. Hence we only imagine based on TV series like Sword of Tipu Sultan, etc. Mangal Pandey unfortunately did not also have enough drama and the climax was underwhelming.

I agree that if Aamir were to make it today, the movie would be have more to it. Those were the learning days.

        • @ Naveen — I am sorry that you speak of Mangal Pandey and Mohenjo Daro in the same breath. In my humble opinion, Mangal Pandey was a bit of a masterpiece that fell short somewhere. It had fabulous music from ARRehman, fitting the mood and tone of the film. The words, the voices — I totally love the music, like it more than the film.

Mohenjo Daro was a well intentioned disaster.

The trailer opens with visuals of heavy rains filling up reservoirs and the voices of government officials discussing the risk of opening the shutters, which will submerge many parts of the city. As the memory of catastrophic floods that wreaked havoc in Kerala is still fresh, the scene immediately strikes a chord.

Going by the trailer, NOTA seems to follow a rich, spoiled brat, who come of age after getting exposed to the horrors whipped up by politics of corruption and greed. The film is written by Shan Karuppusamy and is directed by Anand Shankar of Iru Mugan fame.

NOTA has a stellar star cast including Sathyaraj, Nassar, MS Bhaskar and Mehreen Pirzada among others. Budding actor Sanchana Natarajan seems to have played an important role as a young politician leading the opposition against the Chief Minister, played by Vijay. While she has appeared in a few movies, she made a mark with her performance in Balaji Mohan’s web series As I’m Suffering From Kadhal.

NOTA is simultaneously being made in Telugu. Interestingly, Vijay has himself dubbed his lines in Tamil.

Vijay is currently basking in the success of his recent film Geetha Govindam. It is his second consecutive blockbuster at the box office, following Arjun Reddy.

NOTA is fast nearing completion and it is expected to release in October. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited.

In every thread, one person from the team of 5-6 people, attached to AK films, discusses on one of the 3-4 movies of Aamir Khan – Talaash, Mangal Pandey and DCH. 102. I think some films can be enjoyed by just watching them. And some films make us think and discuss even though the enjoyment quotient is less. Especially if it is semi historical like MP or Padmaavat. Even in MP none of us is praising aamir khan. We are discussing about those times, the social structure, the politics of the ruling class and sati. Curiously Sati and Johar in the above mentioned films made us think about how women must have felt. And selling women to the highest bidder reminds us of similar things in other countries.
Only some films make us discuss about them. And no one is preventing others to discuss their favourite films without too much focus on the leads but focus on the issues dealt with. When one starts praising the lead, the focus shifts to fan worship. How many commercial films have so many layers in the first place? In recent times Sairat is one such film dwelling on contemporary issues of class and mainly caste.

    • I don’t disagree with your point but I’d still resist such a dichotomy. Again I see where you’re coming from but for example I didn’t ‘enjoy’ many of Aamir’s hits (just sticking to his career) more than MP. In more recent times I didn’t enjoy the Hiranis more than Talaash. I think there is tendency to equate enjoyment with a more passive kind of viewing and/or one that gives pure pleasure in a very obvious sense. Defined this way of course one enjoys 3I more than most other films. But again I didn’t ‘enjoy’ TZP less than PK. One could come up with other examples. I’m not against pure or even mindless entertainment but the film I enjoy most is still more meaningful than less. I’m leaving aside those Hollywood productions like Gravity that are so extraordinary for their technological strengths that they overwhelm all other considerations (though here there is an art to how technology is deployed, Avatar would be another example). But it’s also not just about meaning. A film doesn’t have to be deep or anything. It can just do something relatively simple extremely well. QSQT is a good example. Nothing profound here but very well-handled. It has to be one or the other for me. I’ll watch very many mindless films but I ultimately dont’ ‘enjoy’ them to the same degree.

Naveen, basically i guess this is the whole point of this blog that boxoffice discussion and number discussion can only happen so much. We will have to talk about movies that are revisited and are liked. Case in point Stree, in my opinion is better than all the sleeper hits this year and will also take the critical cake, really good movie. It has now been compared to Akshay Kumar movie Bhool Bhulaiya, this was 2007 October, Eid Release. Bhool Bhulaiya opened big andi infact the numbers were comparable to other biggies of that time.

Akshay has lost that edge since past few movies, you need to have a screen presence driven entertaining and strong plot film. The half baked movies like Gold wont do him any good.

  104. Why his next film is expected to do 400-500 cr at BO even at the age of 53 after 30 years as a top star in an otherwise dumb stereotype commercial industry:

    *******

“I see myself as someone who is trying to learn. Each film I try to do, whether I do a film, do something for Paani Foundation or ‘Satyameva Jayate’ (TV show), it is a journey for me.

“I see myself as a learner, someone who has got curious mind. I am a student of whatever I am dealing with and everything is new to me,” Aamir said here at an event on Thursday.

“I get lost in my head. When I sit in a meeting, it is usually for an hour but it goes on for two hours or so. And then I remember there is something else I have to do. So my day becomes longer. I get lost in my work,” he said at the launch of Vivo’s new smartphone.
