2.0 crosses 400 cr net..ending less than 700 cr gross as per BOI in this phase

    • 415 Cr all India nett post GST is in similar range to the 387 Cr Dangal in a pre GST scenario, this being a 500 Cr multi lingual production releasing in 7000 screens while Dangal was a 100 Cr production releasing in 4500 screens across all formats. Even post the China release (which BOI prefers to discount for vested interests as that makes Dangal India’s highest grosser worldwide ) I doubt 2.0 would cross the 900 Cr worldwide gross of Bajrangi or the 850 Cr+ gross of Secret Superstar. So much for being “India’s biggest movie extravaganza”, an over rated heap of crass masala junk with childish logic, an over the top (as always) superstaar and a Bollywood star desperate to get his first major huge grosser (at which he’s failed here too).

      • Bajrangi is 925 cr ww gross and SS 900 cr if you consider concurrent currency exchange rates during their respective theatrical run in phases.

But agree on what u said on 2.0. Its an under-performing disappointment – no escape from that. Producers are claiming 700 cr ww gross, boi may have 650, while some are reporting 600 cr only. Problem is that the upper end of this spectrum also does not do justice to such an investment.

Tagline for this effort – ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’.

  3. Reducing runtime of TOH to 121 minutes from 164 minutes in China is really smart move. This should help more towards its bo prospects there.

  6. Zero has been cleared by CBFC (Central Board Of Film Certification) with U/A certification (Unrestricted Public Exhibition-But With Parental Guidance) and running time of 164 minutes and 15 seconds i.e. 2 hours 44 minutes and 15 seconds. Also, the board provided some suggestions like the cuss words ‘haraami’, ‘haraamzade’, ‘peechwade’ and ‘bhen*****’, were asked to be muted and replaced.

One interesting thing to note is the replacement of Monkey’s name to Diya. If we note the timing, the Chimpanzee will exist in the second half of the film.

Talking about the duration of the movie, Zero is the longest one for director Aanand L. Rai. His Raanjhanaa (2 hours 11 minutes), Tanu Weds Manu (1 hour 59 minutes) and Tanu Weds Manu (2 hours 8 minutes) were way shorter when compared with Zero (2 hours 44 minutes 15 seconds).

    • What was the name of the monkey before that it has to be replaced by name Diya?

      Like

    • Too long. All previous Rai movies had been shorter and entertaining for most parts. This may drag and bore.

      • Rai can bore in 2 hrs itself. Remember that abhay deol film? Even madhavan’s part dragged in TWM films, albeit him being a far better actor than what u hv in zero. Kangana managed to save those 2 films with her quirky characters. Here we have anushka’s terrible handicap and kat’s non-acting. Maybe the chimp will save the day, who knows?

  7. R Madhavan and Abhay Deol will be seen adding to the remarkable performances of the film with interesting characters. However, details of the same are yet undisclosed. R Madhavan, who has earlier worked with Aanand L Rai for the successful franchise of Tanu Weds Manu, would be seen in a special appearance playing an important part of Aafia aka Anushka Sharma’s life. While not much has been revealed of Abhay Deol’s character, the actor will collaborate with the director again after Raanjhaana for a special role.

  8. the makers added that they have made alterations to avoid hurting religious sentiments of the Sikh community. “Despite the fact that the film and its poster depicted only an ornamental dagger and not a ‘kirpan’, steps have been taken by the respondent to alter the relevant scenes. The portions in question have been altered through visual effects to depict an ornamental sword,” read a statement by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

  9. Wonder why we have a thread even before the film’s released. Not that this one’s a potential 500 Cr or even a 300 Cr grosser. If KGF (Hindi) gets a Bahubali 1 kind of word of mouth (80-100 Cr nett) and with Simmba releasing on 28th, Zero might have to rely on positive audience review to get to even 200 Cr.

  16. The sheer rejection of Padman in China has surprised me because in india it was loved more comparatively. The ratings for Padman China remains very high which means the small number of viewers are liking it.

However it is not a movie that is easy to watch or take your family. There were no kids in the theatre where i watched and very few women. Few young college going girls were there.
Many in India, specially women avoided sitting in a theatre with men looking for entertainment in Padman.

A great cinema. Not even close to entertaining me the way Andhadhun did, but a movie which made me look at certain social things differently. These movies are rare.

  17. New adventure

Bollywood star Aamir Khan starts to promote his latest film on the Chinese mainland.

In a room with big windows through which you can get a spectacular view of the sea in Sanya, the city in South China’s Hainan province, Aamir Khan showed up, wearing a gentle smile.

A couple of hours later, the Bollywood star walked onto the stage at the closing ceremony of the first Hainan International Film Festival with Jackie Chan to announce the best feature winner.

It was Dying to Survive, an acclaimed social drama about the moral struggles of a medicine smuggler, which ultimately took home the festival’s top honor on Sunday night.

It is perhaps appropriate that Khan had the honor of presenting the award, given that some of his highest-grossing films in China-such as 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal-poke fun at social prejudices or reflect the struggles that people have to face in their daily lives.

But Khan says that tackling social issues is not his motivation or criteria for choosing movie roles.

“When I’m selecting film scripts, I’m not thinking of social issues. I’m not selecting a film based on a social issue, because I feel that my primary responsibility to (the) audience is to entertain them,” Khan tells China Daily at the festival.

“The audience buys the ticket and comes to the cinema, as they want to be entertained. If they want a lesson in sociology or psychology, then they’ll go to college,” he adds.

The 53-year-old star, with a film career spanning over three decades, hopes his latest film, titled Thugs of Hindostan, will entertain in spades.

Among India’s most expensive films produced, with an estimated budget of $47 million, Thugs is set to open across Chinese mainland theaters on Dec 28. Khan says the film does not have “a social message”. He plans to promote it in Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Xi’an, Nanjing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shanghai and Beijing.

Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Katrina Kaif and Lloyd Owen, the action-adventure film, adapted from an 1839 English novel, is about a band of thugs who aspire to free India from British rule.

Khan stars as Firangi Mallah, a con man recruited by the British forces to steal information from the thugs’ leader.

Khan describes his character, Firangi Mallah, as unpredictable, and with conscience, but no moral values.

“He can sell his mother for money. But I’ve found he’s really an interesting and entertaining character,” says Khan.

The star had discovered a resemblance between his new character and a household name in China’s martial arts world. Two months earlier during the Taihu World Cultural Forum in Beijing, Khan revealed one of his favorite Chinese characters is Wei Xiaobao, the fictional protagonist penned by late Hong Kong literature master, Louis Cha, in his classic novel, The Deer and The Cauldron.

When Khan was in Hong Kong around eight months ago, he met a local filmmaker who gave him a copy of the novel, which comes in three volumes.

Spanning the political conflicts during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in 17th-century China, the martial arts story follows Wei, a teenage hooligan born to a prostitute mother in a brothel to become the best friend of the emperor.

“The Chinese boy is 14 years old. He is sly, funny and a bit like my character (in Thugs of Hindostan),” Khan says during a brief interview.

The influential star also talks about the popular Indian TV show Truth Alone Prevails, which he has hosted since 2012. The program examines some controversial issues in Indian society, such as child abuse, child marriage and dowry.

“I believe that if somebody protests against me, it’s a good thing. I want to know why the people are not believing in me,” Khan says.

He says he feels lucky as many Indians like the show, but he adds “there are a few people who don’t want things to be changed because they benefit from things remaining the same way”.

Having visited China many times in recent years, Khan says he expects to cooperate with Chinese filmmakers, actors and actresses to shoot a Chinese story.

The star even reveals that-should such an opportunity arise-he will spend at least three months preparing, as he would want to memorize the Chinese lines.

With more and more Indian films coming to China-nine imported this year-Khan also says he has contacted China Film Administration, the country’s top regulator for the sector, to express his wish to have some Chinese films screened in India.

Kung fu giants, such as Jackie Chan and the late Bruce Lee, have been the best known Chinese film stars in India for a long time. Now, Khan wants Indians to know more about Chinese cinema.

  18. ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Top IMDb’s List of Most Anticipated 2019 Movies

With the top three spots secured by Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Dark Phoenix, the rest of the list is filled out largely with genre movies. Spots four through 10 are taken, in order, by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, It: Chapter Two, Glass, Joker, Aladdin, and Hellboy. It’s worth noting that a handful of other films that fans have been looking forward to, such as Shazam!, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and even Men in Black 4 failed to make the top ten.

For the first time, a Kannada film dubbed in four other languages is releasing in over 2,000 screens across the country this Friday. Touted as the ‘costliest film’ made in Kannada, KGF, starring Yash and directed by Prashanth Neel, has been dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.

Tamil star Vishal, Telugu producer Korrapatti Ranganatha Sai, noted distributor and producer in Bollywood Anil Tadani, Global United Media of Thiruvananthapuram are distributing the film in their respective languages. The audio rights were bought by Bengaluru-based Lahari Audio by paying a sum of ₹3.60 crore, which is said to be the highest for audio rights.

Vijay told The Hindu that while the Hindi version is being released in over 1,000 screens, over 400 screens will show the Kannada version.

Here is something more to chew – negativity or positivity does not matter, what can happen will happen. How not focus on the product? From the trailers, posters and songs it looks bad. Why not talk more about that? Instead of giving pseudo-gyaan like fake babas?

All 3 khans (even akshay) have accumulated enough success, fan following and wealth over the years to keep producing their films now and successfully fund the PR machinery to keep themselves relevant. And its not about Ranveer or Ranbir catching up. Nor can Rao/Anshuman participate in big game hunting.

The threat lies in increasing market share of hollywood films. And the constant threat of increasing penetration from southern industries – Baahubali films, 2.0, Saaho, RRR, etc etc. Sooner or later they will compete with Khan grossers. BB2 (2017) and AIW (2018) are already showing the way, while Khans have slowed down considerably.

Only Khan film in 2019 is Bharat. Dont be surprised if its competing with Avengers Endgame, Lion King, Spiderman or Saaho for the highest grosser title. And all these may fare a lot better than Shamsheera or Gully Boy.

To be precise, its upto Zero to beat AIW’s 227 cr nett in India – by real collections not fraud PR figures thrown by Red Chillies.

KGF Chapter 1 has made people sit back and notice not just the film, but Kannada industry itself, says Yash
The cinematic mantra this month seems to be KGF. There were whispers about the grand sets, the budget and how rocking star Yash was overworking and putting his all into this project that is now one of the most talked about films — KGF Chapter 1. It is directed by Prashanth Neel and the best part is that KGF is not just creating waves in Karnataka, but across the country and also overseas. In a talk with MetroPlus, Yash confirms the film, which releases on December 21, will be screened in over 2,000 theatres on the national and international platform. The film will be simultaneously released in five languages. “We’ll be able to give you exact numbers on the eve of the release,” says the actor, who sits down with us after a tough press conference.. Questions were shot at him like sharp arrows from every corner of the room — some flattering and some accusing him of “ignoring” the Kannada media, but Yash patiently answered each one with a smile.

  35. Watched 2.0 and came back with mixed feelings; joyful more of course. There was no Hindi version left here; only Tamil. One thing is for sure; Shankar aimed literally for the skies…I mean, birds here! The only hero in this film is his visual imagination put into action. This is one of the worst outings of Rajinikanth. Even that Hrinayakashipu-isque laugh of his that is a wolf-whistle SOS to his fans is a sore visually and aurally. It is truly an Akshay Kumar show all the way: He’s just not worried about his image and it shows. This is not great acting, but for sure this is a fine divorce from Akshay the actor, of course aided by prosthetics and visual effects. Shankar comes up with highly innovative ways to make a handsome man look ugly, and AK gleefully submits to the director.

Some of the visual effects are fantastic and heart-stopping; notably the stadium scenes and Akshay’s taking over of Vaseegaran’s body: Akshay’s transformation into a bird glued with mobiles and his walk along with the busy street at night with a robust back-ground score is terrific and got the most whistles — in a Tamil film where he beats up Rajinikanth, with Tamil audiences watching!!

Frankly, there’s nothing really here-in the stadium scenes, Shankar uses a couple of trade-mark scenes like cigarette flipping or the bullets’ swirling — that Rajinikanth adds, except of course, his mania in Tamil Nadu. In the first part, Shankar used Kanth’s iconic status to the hilt and so it was actually a joy even to non-fans to see the contrast between a timid inventor and a volatile robot that is cleverly depicted through the robotic frame-work invoking his fan-fare moments. Here, I seriously felt one could have used anybody else instead of Rajini and it would have made more sense and driven home the fact better that Shankar really wanted technology to do the talking.

Some lines are corny, and the less said about the wafer-thin plot, the better. However, it for sure is a great one-time watch in 3D on the big screen given the constraints — some of the aerial sweep-shots are really corny — and resources Shankar has worked with. I did not find much of a repeat value.

Shankar has a better imagination but a weaker story-teller; while Rajamouli is a better story-teller with a weaker imaginative mind visually. The contrast, couldn’t have been clearer as it is here.

    • My review of 2.0.

I happened to watch 2.0 last night. Nothing much to say about the film. Its not bad nor good, plain average. and nothing much remains with you the next day. Its less masala than a regular Shankar film, at least till the point where an irritating 2.0 or 3.0 version of Chitti show up (and Rajni starts his usual antics that he is famous for). Rajni was fine in the first half though. However, Akshay Kumar has done well here (and he shows up in the second half to save it). I think that is the main reason why hindi dubbed version is doing relatively better at box office. Akshay deserves all the credit for that.

This film needed to be an outright Rajni vehicle from the get-go to make it really big in TN/Telegu/Kerala belt. And to make it work well in high-end plexes all over india (referring to 227 cr nett from Avengers a few months back), it needed to mute Rajni in the second half. So its neither here, nor there – dangling somewhere in the middle.

I think in hindi version it will do 170-175 cr nett and be a plus film in the end. [ I am hoping it does 200 cr in hindi and gets certified as a hit. If Devgn could get a 200 cr film with the last Golmaal, then Akshay surely deserves to get there with his effort here.] However, in south its downward trend is likely to continue.

As for being a visual spectacle, Shankar uses his imagination better than he did in Enthiran. But the vfx execution is not as great as his imagination (probably budget constraints). There is a cartoonish feeling to the vfx execution here that it somewhat dilates Shankar’s visual ambitions. Hollywood extravaganzas are all beyond such amateurish feel. One needs to check the visuals from the upcoming chinese sci-fi production – The Wandering Earth, whose trailer recently released. Even our neighbors have cracked the vfx code much better than us.

The best thing about the film is Akshay by a margin. He has a good role, and performs v well. But his ‘message’ gets belittled by 2.0 – quite literally. Dont know why Shankar decided to trivialize the issue with cell-phones by the end of it all. He seems completely confused about what he wants to say in the film. Again a middle ground.

I wont recommend it as a visual spectacle. But wont discourage anyone who wants to watch it either – just for Akshay. For his message here and of course the way he entertains. And no, I am not an Akshay fan.

I wud prefer this film over ‘Katappa Kyon Maara’ sequel anyday. But its not a patch on Baahubali The Beginning either. Yet, its an upgrade from Enthiran – and a lot better than bollywood’s krrish series or any such sci-fi attempts from north.

I still think 25Cr is happening but really this should be north of 30Cr. Yes no marketing blitz but even here SRK fans have been positive in main on trailer, songs and juxtaposed with YouTube, bla bla (fyi never give a crap for) this is pretty average so far! Let’s see, never say never! SRK might pull a rabbit out of the hat still!

The Salman SRK song is terrible, considering the promo since EID has practically created some kind of hype for that moment.

    250+ cr – Hit!

      • I think if the movie gets to 225cr it will be called a hit by most..the verdicts after recovery are usually just ranges…..and when the amount being earned back is huge the hit verdict will be easier to get…so a 2.0 would have been called a hit even if it was just recovery because recovery itself was a massive 375 crs…

        • But isnt that convenient double standards at display?

          Like

          • Usually trade looks at the money flowing…so a movie with distrubion cost of 10cr needs 25 cr for hit..20 cr for recovery…and 5 cr is the profit made which is actually 50.percent of distribution..but the same standard cannot be applied for larger budget movies. For ex 100 cr distribution cost will still be 200 cr recovery but even if it earns say 225 cr the person has earned 25cr which though is a lesser proportion of distribution cost visavis the smaller movie just making 225cr itself cannot happen if the movie is not liked..and he has also made more money here..that’s why if you see addatoday their hit is at 205cr for zero..but yes I think at 225cr it will be called a clean hit…

            Like

          • 225 cr means that 25 cr nett over that recover target of 200 cr, which will yield a distributor share of 10-12 cr (depending on how long the film takes to get there, as distributor share reduces in plexes after week one). So 10 cr profit for distributors is justified in ur books for a Hit verdict when the distribution price is 100 cr???

10% ROI and you will give a ‘Hit’ verdict? i hope u r kidding urself.

            Like

          • I think what Krish is saying in layman’s terms it’s a profit model. If you make 10Cr on 10Cr cost or 100Cr cost it’s a hit. I don’t personally agree. I think somewhere in middle, decent profits and ROI.

The 100Cr cost film is like a bluechip stock and the 10Cr cost film is a penny stock. Either way profit is good. But one model is infinitely better. You’d rather make 10 10Cr cost films but you risk winning and losing, but risk is spread. Zero is boom or bust! This is why it’s critical and prestige for Zero to get to at least 180Cr-200Cr, it gives everyone associated whether paid or not to spin it positively. And of course the bigger carrot is beating Race 3 and TOH!

            Like

          • That’s how they do the calculations..even TOH needed only around 250 cr only for a hit verdict which was pretty close to recovery amount..expectation wise it would have been bad but that was enough for hit…..as you pay more and more for distribution cost the percentage required to get to hit will reduce..because that small.percent itself will be a big amount..

            Like

          • Yes Jay..basically what I am saying is that the percentage profit made on distribution cost will not be the same for all budget movies…it is easy to make a profit of 50 percent on distribution cost when budget is smaller rather than when the budget is bigger….bahubali 2 was an exception which gave 300 percent profit even though distribution cost itself were huge…

            Like

          • But this is pretty bad way to think about business in general. Big companies obviously can’t grow as fast as small companies. So you can’t expect similar ROI’s I agree. But for example if a small film makes 2Cr profit on 10Cr cost it should not be penalised either. That’s a decent return.

            Like

          • I am not expecting 100% returns or even 50% when i am saying a hit verdict is sacrilegious below 250 cr nett. @250, the distributor profits will be around 20-25 cr which is decent returns in the given scenario. Why set the bar so low Krish?

            Like

          • Even at 250Cr,TOH would be awful. Expectations need to be accounted for. Otherwise film business is just that, a business. It’s disconnected to reality and perceptions.

The world is such that EXPECTATIONS are critical. It cost Manchester United some £18mm to sack Mourinho yesterday but the ‘value’ of brand Manchester United increased by some £125mm according to experts. So sacking him increased value. I say it’s important to refund losing propositions if you’ve cheated or looted fans as It future proofs your brand. Critical for Zero to make 180Cr by hook or crook as it can paint it’s beautiful fake public picture!

Protecting your brand is a business itself.

As Jay says, its better to buy smaller stocks where the returns can be much greater than investing huge amounts in reputed brands. For example, I am so fucking fed up and become impatient with my current role in leading a dev team for a branded MNC due to its lackadaisical dev efforts, that I am happy to take up an architect designation for a startup where the pay is even greater than what top brands are offering in the market (like amazon). The advance booking for Zero got some momentum this morning after an average response since it opened. The advance is well short of the likes of Thugs Of Hindostan and Tiger Zinda Hai but it is pretty much expected as those films were big action films and this is more of a love story.

The advance booking over the first few days were around the levels of Raees and Tubelight but since yesterday evening there is stronger momentum which has followed through today which means it should beat these films. Raees was an action film but as it had a regional feel the advance and even box office was always going to be restricted. It did have a clash but even with a solo release it could not have gone too far as business was going to be Mumbai / Gujarat mainly with Shahrukh Khan strongholds like West Bengal, TNK and Mysore helping a little.

Zero is a far superior product than Raees going by the trailer so if the advance was just at the level of Raees it would have been disappointing even though with Raees it would be said that it has more of the so called mass elements for an initial. But that is not how box office works and a universal looking film is more important which Zero potentially is.

The best advance for till date a Shahrukh Khan starrer (in terms of collections) till date is the Diwali release of 2014 Happy New Year and there is a chance that Zero should be able to beat that. Obviously the ticket sales will be less but the collections should be able to edge past Happy New Year if this momentum keeps pace.

The biggest advance for an outright Hindi film ever is Thugs of Hindostan released on Diwali this year and Zero has no chance of competing with that. It is also well short of films like Sanju and Race 3. Sanju the public just took a liking to the trailer and even the songs which was a first for Rajkumar Hirani film while Race 3 was a mass film with Salman Khan on Eid.

The advance will not be huge like a Shahrukh Khan starrer should get but its going to be a good number for the type of film it is which is not the huge bumper opener type but a film which builds momentum. The advance is building momentum slowly and more importantly the momentum should continue on Friday and through the weekend and there will be no looking back.

        • This doesnt need to do much to match Race 3’s opening. Race 3 was tracking 25 cr throughout the day till evening shows (check the usual sites), then producer Sallu gave us 29 cr figure the next day. I am sure Red Chillies will easily overdo the misreporting, if not the collections.

Zero Advance Booking Update: How Things Are Changing For This Shah Rukh Khan Starrer!

But is it big enough for a movie having stars like SRK, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma? Let’s analyze!
    By Koimoi.com Team -December 20, 2018

Zero Advance Booking Update: It has started since a couple of days and there have been many developments from day 1. Many cities are just buzzing up and thanks to the Shah Rukh Khan factor; many regions are already filling fast. But is it big enough for a movie having stars like SRK, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma? Let’s analyze!

Mumbai is sleeping! The advance booking has still not picked up here since yesterday. It has boiled down to the last day of the booking scenario and today should possibly give a clearer picture. It’s somewhere similar to 2.0 (a day before) and as that movie picked up on the last day, expecting the same for this one too.

    Delhi:

Delhi is better than yesterday but still, it needs a lot to attain the expected day 1 from the film. Mass centres would come into play in Delhi and usually, it’s seen they rely mostly on spot bookings. The oranges (fast filling) have increased but not enough as expected.

    Bengaluru:

Bengaluru is SOLID! Better than both Mumbai and Delhi. Despite Yash’s KGF, Zero has managed to rise and shine in this area. The advance booking here is a sight to see which also hypes up our hope for the other regions as well.

Pune is getting better & that’s good news for the film. It will eventually get better for sure but it’s decent till now. It’s low if we compare it with Race 3, Sanju and 2.0 but then all of those 3 had a much better pre-release hype than Zero. Still, if we see all the regions combined, Zero has a great chance to outshine Race 3 on the 1st day.

    Hyderabad, Chennai & Kolkata:

All these are few of the regions which are doing amazing than the rest. Hyderabad, especially, is the best of all and could help in adding a huge chunk in day 1. Chennai & Kolkata are very good too, but still, many cinema halls are yet to open the booking.

    Like

    • Hyderabad, especially, is the best of all and could help in adding a huge chunk in day 1

LOL this is such a freaking joke. Hyderabad is always on the higher side for each film. It was high for Race 3, 2.0 and even smaller films.

Hyderabad is the only metro I see that has a very high occupancy rate for Hindi films, no matter who stars in them! Another BOI lie busted, thanks to twitter.

            Like

          • Comparing apples to apples. Based on the data that I have, which comprises all the metros and about 7-8 Tier 1 cities, I can give out a good estimate of what the total is.

The universal standard for everyone here is BOI. So I have chosen Race 3 numbers as the starting point. Everything and every film is compared to that.

If my totals are off compared to BOI then it can mean one of two things:

            1) The first day total for Race 3 was wrong

            OR

            2) BOI is using different metrics for different films — nay, different stars.

            Liked by 2 people

          • And this isn’t some kind of exercise to refute BOI. It’s primarily to bring some form of consistency to Box Office metrics.

If BOI gets exposed in the process, or the producers for that matter, it’s not my concern — although I don’t mind that one bit!

The issue is about inflated numbers. But ultimately the star also becomes part of the debate.
The debate is also about how much a film needs to be a hit or superhit. Boi, Taran have given superhit tags to 2.0 which can be disputed and which was disputed.
While we agree that Toh was a monumental disaster. And even if it was a hit, these debates would have gone on.

Bank Holidays in December 2018: Apart from December 24, banks will remain closed from December 21 to 26.

By Express Web Desk |New Delhi |
    Updated: December 20, 2018 2:44:08 pm

Bank Holidays in December 2018: All banks will remain closed for five days this week.

Calls for a strike by bank employee unions, coupled with public holidays, are likely to cripple financial transactions across the country between December 21 to 26. Apart from December 24, banking services are likely to be affected on December 21 and 26 as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) have threatened to go on strike to protest against the merger of three PSBs, respectively.

The banks will remain closed on December 22 and 23 on account of fourth Saturday and Sunday respectively and on December 25 in view of Christmas, a national holiday.

Citing the reasons behind the strike, AIBOC Assistant General Secretary Sajay Das said, “We called the strike on December 21 demanding full and unconditional mandate for the XIth bipartite wage revision talks based on a charter of demands submitted in May 2017. No headway has been made in the process so far even after 19 months since the discussion on wage revision began.”

Around 3.2 lakh officers are expected to participate in the strike.

But will say this — the Aankh Maare remake is better than the original. It’s not really surprising because the original wasn’t exactly a classic to begin with. Neither was the original shot in an imaginative fashion.

Just an FYI: Aankh Maare is a dance number and many places play such songs in a loop. The numbers will be eventually crazy. You just cannot compare that to regular songs like Mere Naam Tu or Tere Bin from Simmba itself.

Imagine Swag se swagat craze? Its trending over 667 million now. Even Befikre songs were craze – Nashe se chad gayi is almost 500 million! All such dance numbers will always be huge and it needs to be compared to Apples to apples. Nashe se chad gayi did over 250 million before release I think.

The reality is any production house looking at YouTube views should change profession and count sheep, go to sleep.

IMDB ratings – such a farce. My father won’t know IMDB, his rating is excluded. It’s a passionate lover of films vote and filtered by ones who can first access internet, then know how to use it, then care enough to log on etc. It’s age demographic ruins it. Nonsense stuff.

As you said, one cant give equal value to ratings of Bachchan’s older films in imdb as one can for Aamir films due to the demographic that frequents a platform like imdb. Even for Aamir his nineties stuff may be under-represented there.

  62. Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Aquaman has been making waves at the box office for the last two weeks prior to it finally opening in the U.S., having crossed the $300 million mark already. The film is expected to ride that wave to box office success once again with a forecast of around $82 – 85 million in its first three days before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The film is expected to perform quite well thanks to mostly positive reviews from critics.

As for Paramount Pictures’ Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, that film is expected to debut with around $22 million in its first three days. Heavy competition from Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may play a factor in its overall totals this weekend, but the film has received great word of mouth from critics and is the Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, so it is expected to have massive legs in the weeks to come.

Interesting read. While the biggies in India, a land of over 1.3 billion hardly generate 30-40 million theatrical footfalls, the biggest Hollywood grossers sell over 50 million tickets regularly in the domestic market despite being 1/3rd the population.

    Like

    • Sholay sold 50 million tickets more than four decades ago! That too when the population was less than half of what it is now.

The problem lies in the current pricing. A huge section of the audience is simply priced out of the market.

But there is another issue — films are no longer universally loved. In a masala universe, there’s something for everyone, and hence the possibility of attracting a diverse demographic. Since this genre is no longer popular (chiefly because there are no directors who are able to pull it off organically), we are left with good trending genre films. And they seem to have a ceiling on the number of people flocking to watch ’em.

      Liked by 3 people

      • Both are v relevant factors. Indian diaspora is perhaps more diverse in nature too, so we end up hating one genre and loving another. Maybe states and china markets are more balanced in that aspect.

        Liked by 1 person

        • I can’t seem to find the link right now but recall Ravish Kumar recounting that dubbed South Indian masala films are more popular in Bihar than anything else.

Stars like Allu Arjun, Nagarjuna etc are more popular in the heartland compared to Aamir, SRK or Salman.

People, in effect, settle for second-grade masala cinema at the cost of multiplex hits.

It’s not very surprising. We have different tastes in different parts of the country. And our multiplex hits are barely covering the different strata or our society. Pretty much in line with the different societal concerns in the metros vis-a-vis the small cities.

In the metros, traffic and air pollution is a major concern. In small cities and villages, adequate rainfall is perhaps the biggest reason for people to worry.

          Like

          • Hindi film makers seem to have forgotten the art of making universally appealing entertainers which can cater to an audience as diverse as the one’s in B/C centers to the urban multiplexes. Its a formula that SS Rajamouli got perfect in the 2 BB blockbusters. Even the biggest Hindi hits like Dangal and Bajrangi are not exactly universal mass entertainers in the Sholay or Bahubali domain. The Allu Arjun/nagarjuna being more popular than Aamir and Salman in the Hindi heartland is an exaggeration though. TV viewership is not a yardstick to measure mass popularity. Dubbed telugu films make inroads in Bihar and UP alone because that brand of cinema is missing in Bollywood nowadays. If an Aamir or Salman get a truly universal blockbuster franchise like Bahubali, the collections in the Hindi market would go over the roof for sure. Perhaps even higher than BB2 in a franchise scenario.

Reviews are better but that is offset by weaker initial (probably) and a worse position, throw in Simbaa and the cocktail of a potential loser is possible. It always was but I thought Rai’s confidence would work here. He seemed bullish, but I’m not writing it off on 3-4 reviews. Not a promising start IMO.

      • You were expecting 4 or 5 stars from everyone?

        • I expected at least what Rai has dished out to date. Nothing spectacular but something that doesn’t fall apart. Like Chennai Express at least. I’m fed up of big films failing via one half being good and second bad. This is basic stuff. I can say the same of PK but at least the narrative and style is in sync. It’s not like Hirani goes drunk.

          Like

          • If PK had a poor second half, it would not have trended like it did. And since poor is a subjective argument, let’s just say that for the paying public, PK did NOT have a poor second half.

            Like

          • Let me correct myself. PK is like a 4 on 5 first half and 3 on 5 second half. It’s good enough.

With others it’s like a 2 on 5 first half and for me a 1 on 5 second half for TOH. If second half is 2or 3 on 5 for TOH it’s acceptable.

PK is weaker in 2nd half but a weak Hirani film is still better than most!

            Like

          • I don’t want to open up on PK here. I’m simply saying a film like that I prefer both halves to practically any big film since barring Dangal or Bajrangi Bhaijaan. But it having a weaker second half IMO doesn’t hurt it as it’s first half is so good.

Football wise, if Spain knock in 4-0 at half-time and second half they lose 1-0, 4-1 against Brazil say is very good. But if Spain knock in 2-0 in first half and only 1-0 in second half against San Marino it’s disappointing as everyone scores 6’s and 7’s against San Marino!

          • I love football but it’s bizarre when a team plays well for 45mins and then capitulates for no regular reason just 15mins later. These directors should be seasoned enough to start, middle and finish a story is all I am saying.

I hated TOH for this. And Rai from his TWM and TWMR didn’t do this there.

            Like

    • The issue arises when it comes to evaluate one’s own movie than ‘others’ as it’s very difficult to be objective while judging your own work. If KRK were such a great ‘judge’, shouldn’t he be making movies than ‘tearing them apart’ based on his whims and fancies??

      Like

But I agree with vijjie and Z, basic feedback should be a norm. These directors are a bit too precious IMO. Getting feedback is only good IMO. Listening, changing a bit is good.

This is where I love the Joshi/Hirani way of working. It’s trusted collaboration, I’m sure it’s conflicting at times but overall it seems to work.

        • How do we know that they don’t show it to the people who matter to them?? As film-making is such a subjective thing where it’s very hard to create a piece of art which is universally entertaining but meaningful as well as most of the times it’s either the former or the latter but seldom an amalgamation of both!!

          Like

          • I agree that in it’s purest sense it’s art. But with the sums of money involved vetting it, refining it to a wider audience is some logical thing to do IMO. Otherwise make the film you want with no outside interference without baggage and cost hanging over your head.

When a big star enters a project, unfortunately the first casualty is the script. An organic script that suits a distinctive milieu is altered to give the star his due importance. Signature moments of the star are forcefully thrust in, the vision gets distorted to appease the star’s fan-base etc. A lot of compromises are made to make the star fit in rather than the other way round.

If Anand L Rai has never made a film that lasted more than 2 hours, then why exactly is Zero clocking 2:45?

          • True I get it. But is this not a directors ultimate medium? Do Bollywood have strong headed directors who work on convinction rather than stardom? When a star reaches a certain status does it create such a massive problem? I’m truly baffled by how many big films fail.

There is a holiday on the 25th but by that time the WoM would be fully out.

For WoM, the best trackers are the numbers from Bangalore and Pune. If it’s bad, these cities tend to drop very quickly. If these cities don’t drop, then the film can be stable or even see an upswing.

This is precisely what happened with 2.0 recently. And even after a positive WoM, 2.0 is ending its run at 9x its opening day number.

          • This is a box office answer. D3 is a bigger brand, glitzy, glamourous etc relative to a Talaash that is genre handicapped, dark and mysterious. It’s like saying why does a Badhaai Ho make more than Andhadhun.

This is not apples to apples. Talaash is just as accepted as D3. The scales, productions and expectations are different. No one would compare how a Titanic does with a Departed.

Talaash for it’s genre did good business. D3 too. But the latter if little better could do even better. A Talaash kind of film has a ceiling to some extent.

          • We are going in circles as D3 did achieve what was expected from it as nobody expected it to be a classic as Dhoom universe is more about style than class which it delivered. • My only response to D3 is a non box office one. As villain, cop films go it could have been way better. Any number of reviews would say the same.

And my box office answer is simple. It could have been a 300Cr film just like D2 could have been a 100Cr film.

I get the mass belts on the main must have got their monies worth otherwise the film would have trended badly. But basically even if you look at numbers of D3 it’s historic upto 10 days. It’s what I call a 2-3 week film. TZH for whatever reason (haven’t seen it) was stable for much longer.

Else I concede whatever point you are making as it’s bedtime for me.

D3 did what was expected but I say it could have done more. Even I prefer Dhoom and D2. That’s the gap basically. The gap is VKA!

  86. Reviews look poor, I think Rajeev and Anupama will give this a 3/5, with their last line being “an extra star for SRK” which just means that the film is very average. Opening day seems to be <30, WOM will kick in on Wednesday, and it should have 20+ days on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. Lifetime <150, flop.

Watching this tomorrow, but these initial reviews are making me go into the theater like I did TOH and JHMS. Hopefully its more like TOH bc that didn't make me yell at the screen unlike JHMS.

I heard rumors he might team up with Sriram Raghavan. That’s a good start I think. Start with a solid 100 crore grosser and woo the Multiplex audience again. Unless Raghavan also messes up and puts a SRK romantic track into a serial killer movie…

  89. Zero movie review: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina’s impressive performances lift Aanand L Rai’s film from average to ambitious

Charm and Shah Rukh Khan go hand in hand. Even the staunchest of his critics cannot deny he has a unique way of making people smile. In Zero, you will find it hard to stop smiling at SRK’s Bauua Singh. This is partly due to his effortless performance, and partly due to Hemanshu Sharma’s witty screenplay.

The story starts in Meerut, Bauua’s home town. Where he lacks in physical form, Bauua makes up for with affability and ambition. He’s the city’s sweetheart, but has a huge crush on Bollywood actress Babita Kumari (Katrina). He meets Aafia Bhinder (Anushka Sharma) — a differently abled scientist — through a matrimonial portal and slowly, they fall in love. Anushka gives an impassioned performance as Aafia, and kudos to her for picking offbeat roles time and again.

Zero is an extremely self-aware film (to the point of being hilarious), at least in the first half, which goes by swimmingly with jokes and heart-warming moments. Bauua’s ambition, though, takes him from Meerut to Mumbai, from Aafia to Babita Kumari. In Mumbai, he is introduced to the world of glitz, glamour and heartbreak. The references in this section of Zero are smart and engaging. Credit for this goes to Katrina’s whole-hearted performance as an emotionally unstable but ballsy actress. She’s sassy, seductive and gives no f*cks, and yet is vulnerable. It’s refreshing to see Katrina play a character that isn’t an NRI or some other excuse to explain her choppy Hindi. But she rises above her stereotype. Katrina pulls off complex scenes with ease and almost makes you forget you’re watching someone who has been criticised for her acting skills through her career. This is a side to Katrina that I love. More of this, please.

Bauua’s ambitious journey eventually takes him from a small town to the stars. Literally. And in more ways than one. But what goes up always comes down. And despite its inherently pleasing quality, spot on performances (special shout out to Tigmanshu Dhulia and Zeeshan Aayub), cameos by several celebrities and chucklesome one-liners, Zero falls prey to the second-half curse.

The less I say about the second half, the better, for no words can express the surreal feeling I felt while I watched it. The plot takes many cinematic leaps and liberties, and at some point you are bound to lose track. It’s also a very long film, that tests your loyalty to its protagonist.

While the VFX in Zero is not seamless, the effort is visible and one must laud Aanand L Rai, Red Chillies and the man himself, Shah Rukh Khan, for executing an ambitious project like Zero. You may or may not like the film, but you will most certainly fall in love with Bauua Singh.

This is a first impression review of Zero. Our critic Anna MM Vetticad’s movie review will be published soon. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, watch the trailer here:

In a romantic movie, second half is slow means family is going to love it. To watch a fast paced second half, go for a porn movie or an action flick.

      • Not really. SRK films tend to go melodramatic in second half, not slowdown. KJo syndrome, IMO. Something has to happen like some greek tragedy. Either he’s dying, someone else is, someone is finding him, he’s finding someone, brothers lost, sisters lost, mum finds him, dad loves him again or he’s trying to fool his future in laws into getting his girl. Whatever it is it embodies the SRK goodboy act whereas the neutral just wants him to clock his girlfriend off the top of the building or just be some kick ass bad guy from 93, or do something like Swades, strip him bear of every mannerisms possible and see where it goes.

Instead every director wants to reboot DDLJ in some sick and twisted way.

Naseeruddin Shah said he fears his children because they will not have an answer if a mob surrounds them asks them are whether they are Hindu or Muslim

Actor Naseeruddin Shah says that he is worried for children in today’s India. He’s worried because he imagines a situation where his children may be surrounded by an angry mob and asked: “Are you Hindu or Muslim?”

“My children will have no answer,” Naseeruddin Shah says, “Because we chose not to give a religious education to our children.”

Naseeruddin Shah also says that there is a “poison” that has spread in the Indian society. “It will be very difficult to capture this djinn [genie] back into the bottle.”

“There is complete impunity for those who take the law into their own hands,” Naseeruddin says. “We have already witnessed that the death of a cow has more significance [in today’s India] than that of a police officer.”

Naseeruddin was referring to the recent Bulandshahr violence in which a police officer was killed by a mob. The violence was sparked by the discovery of cow carcasses.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested three people in connection with the alleged cow slaughter. The policeman’s killers remain free.

Naseeruddin Shah’s comments were put online by Karwan-e-Mohabbat India (Caravan of Love) a travelling activist collective that is focussed on highlight and combating instances of hate crimes and lynching.

In a short YouTube video put up by Karwan-e-Mohabbat India, Naseeruddin Shah says that he worries for his children.

“I was given a religious education…But Ratna [Pathak Shah, Naseeruddin’s wife] did not get any religious education…[And] we chose not to give a religious education to our children,” Naseeruddin says.

Naseeruddin adds that he believes “good and evil have nothing to do with religion” and so his children were not brought up in a religious environment.

“So I fear for my children…Because if a mob gathers around them and asks them are you a Hindu or Muslim, they will not have any answer…Because they have no religion,” Naseeruddin says, before signing off with: “I am angry and I believe every right thinking man must be angry and must not fear.”

SLB can succeed with a Ranveer Singh because he isn’t a superstar, and no one expects a Ranveer Singh movie to be any particular way. Put SRK in there and you get…Devdas.

In terms of big budget movies, honestly just looking forward to South Indian movies like Saaho, Dhruva, the Chiranjeevi one, Rajamouli’s next

Don’t know how far Zero Goes as far as BO in concerned but my problems with Zero right from the trailer til now is, As Shubhra Gupta written on her Indian Express Review

1- That vertically challenged bit should have been the differentiator. But it’s nothing but window dressing, a hook on which hangs nothing.

2- But all too soon, the film abandons its minimal air of rootedness, and flees towards preposterousness.

I mean don’t go sympethetic on vertically challenged bit but still show him real. Here Bauva singh is doing everything what SRK does in his most of the films.

  104. TOI review : 3/5

The film’s first half is spent on setting up this unconventional romance. While the ideas are unique and appreciable, the narrative doesn’t connect all the proverbial dots in the arc of the story. The plot of Zero, neither engages you, nor does it offend you.

In second half, It’s here that the graph of the movie and the characters just does not add up. The writing by Himanshu Sharma, has its moments, but it does not translate into the larger-than-life love story that it aspires to be. It swiftly goes hurtling out of orbit and at 2 hours and 25 minutes, the film definitely feels too long drawn.

The good part is that director Aanand L Rai’s characters never let their a physical challenges overpower their spirit and resilience. There’s no rocket science to the fact that Shah Rukh pulls off romantic moments and he does that here with charm and intensity. He is excellent as the short but charismatic Bauua in a story that relies highly on special effects. Katrina Kaif appears in a smaller part, but she totally impresses in the performance of a conflicted Bollywood star, who is also heartbroken. Sadly, while Anushka Sharma’s character had wonderful potential, the mannerisms employed by the actress to portray the handicap, don’t always look consistent or convincing.

The same inconsistency plagues the movie, too. At one point, Zero dazzles with moments of colour and vibrancy, but then it also follows up with dull scenes that fail to launch the drama in the zone that it’s supposed to be in. Some of the comedy moments between SRK and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub stand out, so does the song Mere Naam Tu with SRK dancing in a storm of colours. While the film has a wealth of references to Bollywood and its stars, these details don’t compensate for a story that starts with a beautiful plot, but takes off on a bizarre ride. At first go, the film makes you light and easy, which is good, but the problem is that it doesn’t really take you on that flight of entertainment, which you set out for.

    • Don 2, Raees and Dear Zindagi were decent attempts from him in the last 10 years. But none of these worked that well for him @BO. When a star is facing a downturn, then even decent to average films tend to under-perform and one needs a real good film to recover in all aspects, be it critically or box office wise. Sadly Zero never looked like that film, despite fan rants.

      Like

    • How to define simple as dear Zindagi was low budget and fell into simple category by Shahrukh’s standards, but despite Alia’s presence with Shahrukh, it couldn’t make the desired impact at the box-office. The biggest issue Shahrukh has been facing that neither his strength genre is working for him nor the experimental stuff. His over dependence on his lover boy image is now harming him as he is well past that phase and also the generation which loved him in those roles is replaced by a new generation which has moved on to Ranbir, Ranveer, Tiger, Ayushmann, Rajkumar. With Swades and CDI, he tried but half-heartedly, had he persevered with those kind of roles & films, probably he would have been in a better position than where he is right now fighting for his relevance.

      Like

      • Agreed. Never understood why he chose NOT to follow-up the leads he got with Swades, CDI. Swades was a bo flop and that may have deterred him. But he himself to chose to follow Oso/Rnbdj route instead of recognizing the gold in CDI. Chasing mindless BO money eventually leads to ur downfall.

Moral of the story – Never boast abt ur paycheck. Some one else is always earning more. Just focus on ur work and get the job done.

  109. Zero Movie Review: A Surreally Bad Shah Rukh Khan Starrer, But A Worse Aanand L. Rai Film

The Bermuda Triangle is the only triangle that comes to mind with actors Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, mostly because the audiences that dare to enter their story never find themselves again

Early on in Zero, we see Bauua Singh, a 38-year-old Meerut resident with an offensive sense of humour, leap onto the seat of a crusty movie theater and dance with gay abandon. He enjoys an item song. A half-naked Katrina Kaif writhes to music on screen. I think: How quaint, a metaphor detailing Shah Rukh Khan’s fierce post-2010 desire to win over single-screen audiences. An analogy for his accessibility, perhaps. Further proof arrives in the form of a dance-off with Salman Khan, the ultimate single-screen messiah, at a venue that looks like a renovated MMA dungeon. The subtext is undeniable. Even Kaif is playing herself; she obsesses about an ex named Mr. Kapoor.

I find some more subtext: Bauua is a huge Bollywood fan, which is why he behaves uncannily like Shah Rukh Khan, spreads his arms, sings romantic songs, flashes his dimples and references them extensively, woos a girl in the corniest ways possible, sees stars in a polluted night sky, and then flakes on the girl because cinema has given the small-town man an unrealistic perception of love and physicality. “But you drink alcohol; girls like you are not supposed to get serious about guys like me,” he explains. And he chases the glamorous, arrogant larger-than-life superstar instead. I think: How clever, a nod to Gaurav, his starry-eyed counterpart from Fan. Further proof arrives in how he sees everyone from Alia Bhatt to Kajol to Rani Mukerji to Deepika Padukone and the late Sridevi at a randomly placed promotional event.

Once the 580-minute-long second half begins, however, I realize that maybe – just maybe – the writer didn’t quite intend for subtext, or even text at times, as much as I set about looking for some. I saw what I wanted to see, like the cerebral version of that shallow chap from a crass Hollywood comedy who sees people’s inner beauty reflected in their frumpy outward appearance. At one point, a couple argues while floating emotionally in a zero gravity chamber. Zero Gravity. No. No more. That’s when the rose-tinted glasses come off, and it hits me: Is Bauua…a dwarf? Does Afia have…cerebral palsy? Is Katrina playing an alcoholic superstar named…Babita Kumari? Are Alia, Katrina and Deepika really in…one frame? Is this film not called…Hero?

I never thought I’d say this, but here goes: Katrina Kaif is the best thing about Zero. If not for her love affair with Jesus Christ, she might have been the best thing about the god-awful Jab Tak Hai Jaan, too – the last movie starring this doomed trio. The Bermuda Triangle is the only triangle that comes to mind with these three, mostly because the audiences that dare to enter their story never find themselves again. She drinks herself silly, almost as if she can foretell the fate of the film. Almost as if she can see a scene ahead that involves an angry monkey, human baby, gun, wheelchair and R. Madhavan’s haircut on the same stage. A dramatic scene, no less. Followed by a mugging at Times Square and a free-for-all “competition” to qualify as the first human to reach Mars. Maybe she could almost hear Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Ridley Scott (The Martian), Ashutosh Gowarikar (Swades) and Damien Chazelle (First Man) collectively gasp at the prospect of realizing that “Liftoff” in their shuttle-launch countdowns is Zero for the country that invented zero.

I never thought I’d say this, but here goes: Katrina Kaif is the best thing about Zero. If not for her love affair with Jesus Christ, she might have been the best thing about the god-awful Jab Tak Hai Jaan, too – the last movie starring this doomed trio.

Kaif has the most able part in a film that thinks disability is merely an accessory designed to enable an actor’s stature. This isn’t all that surprising in an industry where ambition is measured by the pectoral scale of six-pack abs and protein shakes. Bauua Singh is a gimmick, as is (a horribly performed) Afia. Khan tries, but he has clocked way too many years as a witty conversationalist and dream interviewee to reconnect with the craft that put him in those seats. The more I see him struggling to undo his self-reverence within movies, the more I feel like going back in time and appreciating Fan for its aspirations. It might, after all, be the last Hindi film to feature Shah Rukh Khan as we’d want to remember him: audacious, edgy, talented. As for Anushka, she always swings hard, but it’s only opposite Khan that she spectacularly misses. Afia is a half-Afghani scientist for NASA – which is enough of a “condition” in contemporary cinema. She didn’t need more of our sympathy.

I’ve always maintained that writer Himanshu Sharma is better at colouring a scene – with banter, energy, personality – than connecting them. He is terrible at forming a coherent screenplay out of them; this was especially evident in the Tanu Weds Manu series. Here, this flaw is amplified tenfold, much like how most storytellers’ flaws these days seem to amplify tenfold when Shah Rukh Khan is occupied in their vision. In fact, even the texture of his scenes might have been handicapped if not for the characters’ disabilities. Bauua and Afia are shown to partake in the kind of chemistry where they openly mock each other’s deficiencies – a ‘romantic’ trait that makes us thankful for Barfi being deaf and mute around an autistic Jhilmil.

Some of the film’s best lines, again, belong to Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, who plays the little man’s best friend. But he, too, is half-blind. You get the gist. On another day, I’d have looked at his partial blindness as a metaphor for Bauua’s half-ticket stature or Aanand L. Rai’s half-witted film. Or maybe because he can sense two imperfect halves yearning to form a perfect full. But as they say: subtext lies in the eyes of the beholder. Today, his blindness exists only so that a glass eye makes him the comic in the group of pariahs. Maybe, though, there is more to Bauua’s cosmic gesture of love: he can conjure up shooting stars by simply tracing his finger across the sky. In other words: A star, falling, once the count reaches zero. And crashing down to earth.

  110. KGF MOVIE REVIEW
    TIMES OF INDIA
Sunayana Suresh, Dec 21, 2018, 08.22 AM IST
    Critic’s Rating:
    3.5/5
Rocky is an ambitious boy, who wants to die as the richest and most powerful man. From the streets of Bombay to the fields of KGF, he embarks on the mission. And his tale is being retold by a journalist who chronicled his life in the 1980s.

Prashanth Neel’s KGF, which stars Yash in the lead, has become arguably the most spoken about Kannada film nationally. The expectations have been enormous. Does the team deliver? Yes, they do. The film has a fast-paced first half, which does seem a little long, but the second half and the climax sets up the right premise for the second part of the film.

The screenplay is the most interesting part of the film. The non-linear pattern keeps the viewers engaged, with the growth of Rocky being shown in a steady fashion. While there are a fair share of scenes and dialogues that bring out the hoots and cheers from the masses, the makers have still maintained a clever story telling pattern that assures one to also keep pace with the narrative. The film traverses from 1951 to 2018, while maintaining a sense of curiosity as each character is unveiled.

Adding the extra edge to the film are the cinematography, art direction and the locales. Everything looks top notch and one is often left spellbound at the scenes. Be it the dark dreary world in KGF to the more glitzy nightlife scenes in Bangalore, all of them are shown beautifully. Yash, as Rocky, lives his character to the fullest and his screen presence definitely has the viewers cheering alongside him. The ensemble cast play their respective parts, with each of them playing minor building blocks in setting up Rocky’s character.

The narrative in the first part builds the character of Rocky as the maverick mastermind who will not stop for anything until he reaches his mission. While there is a sense of temporary closure in the first chapter of the film, one also leaves the hall yearning for more. KGF surely seems to have delivered what it set to achieve.

All eyes on Isha Ambani’s new 50,000 sq ft multi-million dollar mansion
After the wedding, Isha Ambani, 27 and Anand Piramal, 33, are into Gulita, a 50,000 square foot mansion that the groom’s parents gave them as a wedding present.

Gulita, a bungalow which according to local media will be the marital home of Isha Ambani, daughter of the Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani, is seen in Mumbai, December 7, 2018. REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File Photo(Reuters Photo)
As the celebrations from what many in India are calling the wedding of the year wind down, all eyes are now turning to the multi-million dollar mansion that Isha Ambani, the daughter of India’s richest man will move into with husband, Anand Piramal.

The 50,000 square-foot mansion, which stands in the swanky locality of Worli in South Mumbai and has sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and the Sea-Link bridge is still a step down for the bride, given her father’s home is more than eight times that size.

Isha’s father is Mukesh Ambani, a telecom and petroleum magnate whose net worth is pegged at $43 billion, and whose 27-floor, 400,000 square foot Tetris-tower-like residence is a prominent structure on the Mumbai skyline.

It was in that house that Isha got married to Anand Piramal on Wednesday, the culmination of week-long celebrations that included a private concert by US singer Beyonce.

The wedding was described by some as a mini-Davos summit, as it was attended by two former U.S. secretaries of state, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, along with Saudi Oil Minister Khalid Al-Falih, private equity doyens Stephen Schwarzman and Henry Kravis, CPPIB CEO Mark Machin, and WPP Founder Martin Sorrell, along with dozens of Bollywood celebrities.

The Piramals, who have interests in real estate and pharma, bought the property, previously owned by Hindustan Unilver, at a reported price of $62 million in 2012.

Marked by a stunning glass facade and three glazed steel structures, Gulita has seen hectic remodelling work in the months leading up to the wedding.

The largest of the steel structures is 11 metres tall and it was constructed using 3D modelling tools, according to Eckersley OCallaghan, a London-based engineering firm which was involved in the project.

The Mumbai Mirror newspaper reported that the house has three basements, multiple dining rooms and an outdoor pool.

Many in India, where tens of millions live in dire poverty, have followed the wedding, for its dazzling display of wealth and influence.

Isha’s twin brother, Akash, is set to marry fiancee Shloka Mehta early next year.

So the absurd leap of faith that bollywood movies used to take will not work anymore. I’m guessing that’s what happens in the second half of Zero. Are you watching it right now?

‘Zero’ film review: Null all the way into the void

Shah Rukh Khan shrinks to conquer in Aanand L Rai’s Zero, a movie that probably sounded interesting at the concept stage but ends up being irretrievably outlandish in its execution.

The romantic comedy about a vertically challenged man’s attempt to balance his love for a cerebral palsy-affected scientist with his adoration of a movie star ends up as an unintended circus act. It involves A-list actors, respectable performers cast as extras, a swooning Ajay-Atul score and cameos by Bollywood royalty. The presence of a chimpanzee completes the feeling of the film being a freak show whose main attraction is a severely diminished version of one of Hindi cinema’s most outsized idols.

Rai’s grand folly of a movie, based on a story and screenplay by Himanshu Sharma, is about Bauua Singh (Khan), a Meerut resident who measures less than five feet. Always the shortest man in the room and a frequent target of ridicule, especially by his father Ashok (Tigmanshu Dhulia), Bauua has adopted a John Wayne strut and a devil-may-care attitude. Bauua is 38 years old and unmarried, and when he sees a photo of Aafia (Anushka Sharma) at a matchmaking agency, he decides that she will do.

Aafia’s photograph offers an incomplete picture of her. One side of her body twitches uncontrollably, she speaks with difficulty and uses a wheelchair. If Bauua overcompensates for his lack of height with brashness and derring-do, Aafia has braininess to offer: she is a mathematics genius and an acclaimed scientist who is steering a mission to send humans to Mars.

Bauua is undeterred by Aafia’s condition. Reasoning that two outliers can unite against a cruel world, Bauua woos Aafia in a manner reminiscent of a certain movie star, the one who flings out his arms to express his love and makes women offers they can never refuse. Lost in the sweet music of wedding bells is an alarm bell that goes by the name of Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif). Babita is a troubled movie star, struggling to recover from a broken heart. A chance encounter between Babita and Bauua sets him on a journey that winds through Mumbai’s film industry and ends up in a rocket that blasts off to Mars.

Mars is where the future of humankind lies, Aafia declares, and Zero takes her advice very seriously, blasting off unto the unknown without a care for the consequences. Written without any irony and turgid for the most part, Zero comes through in only a handful of scenes. Better than the cringe-worthy moments between Bauua and Aafia are the scenes involving him and Babita. Katrina Kaif is spot-on as Babita, a cynical and shambolic celebrity who adopts Bauua as her mascot and forges a relationship of empathy and mutual understanding with her knee-high friend. Kaif has rarely been this good, and she emerges as Zero’s surprise element.

Shah Rukh Khan’s earnest performance is always undercut by the visual effects that render him as a pint-sized version of himself. Bauua is meant to be a doughty fighter whose dreams cannot be contained by the borders of Earth. But the visuals of a shrunken Khan are never anything but a distraction, and undermine Khan’s effort to convey Bauua’s romantic troubles. Like a meme or a gif inserted into a serious study, Bauua never quite blends into the backdrop, and feels less a real person than a product of slick machine-aided trickery.

Among the bits that belong on Mars rather than in this movie’s universe are the songs in which Bauua prances with children and dances for the benefit of Salman Khan, and Bauua’s attempt to impress a bevy of Bollywood beauties, all of whom have appeared with Shah Rukh Khan in his films.

Bauua might have been more credible if he had been played by an actor with less wattage than Khan. Like Khan’s 2016 movie Fan, Zero provides a side commentary on Khan’s recently troubled career graph. In Fan, Khan played a movie star modelled on himself and a deranged admirer who looked just like him – an idea that probably sounded fascinating on paper but confused audiences who didn’t quite get the meta-analysis joke.

Khan’s fanbase will possibly be even more perplexed with Zero. By trying to play the man next door rather than a larger-than-life personality, Khan has all too literally let himself be cut to size. The romantic declarations are less effective, the conviction with which Khan has carried off more modest romances is missing, and the package is smaller than before. As the space rocket blasts off towards Mars, the superstar is transformed into a supernova, and it’s null all the way into the void.

  116. So it’s come true wahi I am saying from day one and I will stick to it even if zero does 300 cr. The dwarf part is gimmick. Haven’t seen any dwarf who acts like baba singh. Infact haven’t seen a small town guy who acts like a monkey. I belongs to a small town of uttrakhand. I have some relatives in western UP(Meerut and adjoining area). Who acts like a fool (Baba) in this day and as. But here I will put 70% blame on Director and script writer. 30% on SRK b/C even after acting over 25 years he doesn’t get basics right. SRK and Amitabh both are pathetic in thier script sense. Even Salman has better sense then them. Look at even John abraham and his choice of films.

    • I’m totally with you, this nonsense Red Chilies VFX will be the end of him. There’s no reason to have VFX in everything! And I can’t judge his script sense because to have that you would at least need to read the script! It sounds like he still does movies based off 2 line summaries and with people he feels comfortable/gels with.

But he’s also delusional- I thought JHMS was rock bottom and he would change, but looks like we have not gotten there yet. He is on track to have a 300 crore movie (in terms of losses).

I’m imagining the climax of Zero and the space scenes like the climax of RA. 1 lol

Similarly, Tapsee in Manmarziyan is just head and shoulders above everyone else.

Special Mention: Abhishek Bachchan in Manmarziyan; Pankaj Tripathi in Stree and Tabu in Andhadhun.

Radhika Madan and Sanya Malhotra in Pataakha are also quite good.

Twitter Filled With Pics, Videos Of Strange Light Seen Over California
The bright light was seen over California skies.

Photos and videos of a mysterious light that appeared over Sacramento and the Bay Area in California filled social media on Wednesday – throwing up more questions than answers. The lasso-shaped illumination led to many conspiracy theories, according to CBS News.
“It was far too big to be a firework,” said Gus Graves of San Francisco. “I’m thinking it’s some sort of high-tech rocket that they’re working on, possibly? Or aliens. One of the two.”

The Sacramento Bee reports that a Delta IV Heavy rocket, carrying satellites, was supposed to launch from in Santa Barbara County on Wednesday evening. The launch was cancelled at about the same time the light appeared and has been rescheduled for Thursday evening.

This MAY give room for KGF to do some decent business with its hindi version and Aquaman shud now be able to get to 50 cr mark.

  134. Zero had an average advance as it picked up around 13 crore nett before release. This is the second best total ever for a Shahrukh Khan starrer after Happy New Year but the ticket count is far lower than that film and also lower than Raees.

The advance is less than 50% of Thugs Of Hindostan and 30-35% lower than Race 3 but these films had more going from them in terms of initial due to the action factor and as they had holidays over the first three days. On On one hand the advance should have been better considering its a Shahrukh Khan starrer but on the other hand it looked like it would not even get to this level on Monday and may just hit double digits.

A 17-18 crore nett figure would have been a good result for this film but this film was never going to be about the initial but more about the public reports wnd where it lands up on Sunday and that is still the case. the to advances of all time in terms of collections pre release are as follows.

Kedarnath did well in its second week as it picked up 18.75 crore nett apprx. This takes the total business of the film to 61 crore nett. The drop in the second week is 55% which is very good trending though it will be stopped in its tracks by the release of Zero.

The second week is better than films like Veere Di Wedding, Dhadak, Parmanu – The Story Of Pokhran and Pad Man. The film is at around 17.50 crore nett in Mumbai circuit and at around 14 crore nett in Delhi / UP. Generally all circuits have done decent be it Mumbai or Assam. It remains to be seen where the film goes as the screenings have dropped to 1 or 2 shows at the big multiplexes..

    Thursday – 1,75,00,000 apprx

    Second Week – 18,85,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 61,01,00,000 apprx
