    • Enjoyed Army of the Dead. It’s pop-corn entertainer and nothing serious but well does well for its genre and brings something new. Maybe there will be sequel. Entertaining.

No, the guy who kills Moosa is not Ashwin Kunder. He’s the guy who kills Pasha and attacks in hospital. Moosa is killed by Sajid, who is played by Shahab Ali.

The entire essence of the story has been completely lost thanks to “Power Star’s” non sensical antics and steroid action. And of course last but not the least since this is Tollywood they’d surely have a heroine (however unnecessary to the plot she is, played by a predictably cardboard Shruti Hassan) and a caricature antagonists played by the ever reliable 2 bit clowns Mukesh Rishi & Prakash Raj. Lagaan was indeed Aamir’s 10th box office hit. The road to Lagaan:

          1. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
          2. Dil
          3. Dil Hain Ke Manta Nani
          4. Hum Hai Rahu Pyar Ke

          6. Raja Hindustani
          7. Ishq

          10. Lagaan

        • Shivaay Says:

Ghulam & Sarfarosh were semi hits elevated to Hit by BOIs skewed methodology. Not sure about DHKMN as well. Anyhow trade methodology is a never ending debate. AKs come a long way from ordinary hits to record breaking historic BBs.

          Like

        • BOI’s classification is a joke. I remember when Mangal Pandey released they had it as Average. A few years later they revised it to Below Average and now they have it as Flop. Its box office collections (30 cr nett) did not change over the years, did it?

For reference, Komal Nahta’s FI had given the the verdict ‘Overflow’ to films like DHKMN, Sarfarosh and Ghulam. It translates to box office ‘Hits’ in common parlance.

Yes, movies like DHKMN, HHRPK, Ghulam or Sarfarosh were not big blockbusters. Does not mean regular hits can be downgraded for not being all time grossers.

          Like

        • Shivaay Says:

Nahta’s methodology has changed over the years with more lucrative satellite & digital deals for production houses of films. The overflow of the 90s is not the same as overflow of today. 90s overflow films were mostly the semi hits. By FIs method even Ghajini is meant to be an overflow due to record breaking acquisition costs. Nahta still went ahead & called it a super hit due to record breaking deals for the producers & bo numbers (production deals were never part of FI classifications in the 90s). Same for Singh is King, 2.0, War, TZH etc. By 80s & 90s yardstick of FI all these films would be Semi Hits/Hits.

          Like

        • Nahta’s FI classification is quite consistent over 90s or today. The really big grossers and profitable films make it to ‘A’ category of hits in FI. Most ordinary hits find their way into the Overflow or ‘B’ category. The huge acquisition costs dont exist in a bubble, it comes with various revenue streams available now apart from theatrical revenue. Semi-hit films actually go into the ‘Commission Earners’ category in FI.

Rather than acquisition price, more often its the COP that is taken into account.

Btw, dont see the relevance of talking about only blockbusters and downgrading smaller hits when talking wrt to Lagaan. Lagaan was a small hit, nothing in terms of box office as the blockbuster Gadar.

          Like

        • With several examples, i claimed, proved and shared in SS that BOI’ s opening reporting are better and faster, Komal’s final numbers are good and Taran’s classification is best.
All three exceling in one of the areas of BO.

So for Classification, pls see Taran’s.

          Like

        • Taran’s classification is good. But his classifications are not available for anytime before his twittering days. Do you have any archive of Taran’s verdicts? If not, then Komal’s FI verdicts are the ones we have and will have to do with.

          Like

        • Taran’s classification is even worse than BOI. Case in point, Ready being an ATBB and Sultan being a BB. Anyhow when it comes to Lagaan, its a far bigger Hit than we credit it for (partly due to the overshadowing box office run of Gadar). For a predominantly niche narrative catering mainly to metropolitan & semi metropolitan audiences the movie’s gross outshined the likes of Rang De Basanti, Chak De and ZNMD.

          Like

        • Even leaving behind the comparison with Gadar, Lagaan was not exactly that big at box office. It was made with a big budget of 25 cr and did around 35 cr nett in India. In that terms, it was a smaller hit than the likes of Sarfarosh, Ghulam or DHKMN which did nett business that was twice their respective budgets. Its strange that you are downgrading the box office hits like DHKMN or HHRPK and uplifting Lagaan. Actually these were all small hits and not a patch to the recent 5 All Time Grossers that Aamir has delivered.

And all this is strictly in box office terms. An iconic film like Lagaan cant be evaluated only in terms of box office. Its counted as one of the finest films of 21st century coming from Bollywood. It will have a much longer shelf life than just 20 years.

Lagaan might’ve had high costs (20 Cr+ if I remember correct) but had zero face value barring Aamir Khan. Director Ashutosh was an unknown till then with a dismal track record leading up to Lagaan. With the entire film solely banking on AKs shoulders the collections & theatrical footfall was a far greater achievement than the likes of Sarfarosh & Fanaa which had added face value & better known directors. All that with a Gadar clash! As for the timelessness, completely agree on Lagaan. Its second on my list of AK films after Dangal (tied with Sarfarosh).

          Like

        • Not sure what you mean. Sarfarosh was by a first time director with no previous track record. Also not sure what face value Sonali Bendre brought in box office terms.

Sarfarosh was the first content film from AK that worked well at box office. But it was a medium budget film made with 8 cr which did a decent 18+ cr nett at box office.

Lagaan on the other hand was the first big budget movie with content of AK (COP around 25 cr including P&A) that did well at the box office. But it was not a bigger hit than Sarfarosh in terms of ROI. Both Lagaan and Sarfarosh were regular hits, but their offbeat nature and strong content laid the foundation for AK to work on for the later stages of his career.

Referring to Naseeruddin Shah as an antagonist who was well within the commercial domain through the 80s & 90s. ROI is only one of the multiple yardsticks to judge a film’s success and from an audience perspective it has little to no value.

        • Shah was a box office force? If only such dreams of his was true!

        • A slightly more recognized face than the rest of Lagaan’s cast for sure. Ditto for Sonali compared to Gracy Singh.

          Like

        • ‘Slightly more recognizable’ does not really help in box office terms. Sarfarosh was as offbeat and risky as Lagaan. Fortunately, both did well at box office and were clean hits. Claiming any of them to be more than that (a superhit or blockbuster) is simply not the truth. And they were both legitimate box office hits, no matter from which methodology one judges their trade outcome.

Same goes for other smaller hits of AK in the nineties – HHPPK, DHKMN, Ghulam, etc. Aamir may not have been a top box office draw in the nineties like he is at present, but he was still a superstar with many box office hits in that era (as i have listed above). Not every hit has to be a blockbuster like Dil or Raja Hindustani. Every superstar’s filmography is checkered with small hits and superhit/blockbusters. Thats the way of life.

        • JJWS collections were not bad. 4 cr nett, before HAHK changed the trade dynamics, was a decent haul in its time. But it had high costs associated with it due to reshooting of almost the entire movie. Also it was Mansoor’s next after the superhit QSQT, so expectations were quite high.

          Like

Indians love the idea to the core. Something similar was achieved in Vicky Kaushal’s URI, another no expectation small movie which did unbelievable business. Common theme Indian winning and Pakistan losing. Actually the first country which used the word Pakistan as negative and villain was Sarfarosh and that laid the foundation and then Kargil war and then Gadar and now we are in the age of Uri.

The pandemic has hit businesses hard and the entertainment industry has also had to bear the brunt of it. One more South Mumbai cinema hall will now soon give way to a mall. Dreamland Cinema, situated in Grant Road, is going under redevelopment. The owner of the cinema Yunus Supariwala, when contacted, informs, “It is going to redevelopment and a mall will be built here but there will be a small theatre which will continue screening of films”. Supariwala had taken over Dreamland Cinema 35 years ago. “When I took over the cinema hall, ‘Tezaab’ was the first film that was screened there and it ran for 50 weeks. The last film that played here was Tiger Shroff’s ‘Baaghi 3’,” he shares emotionally.
Dreamland Cinema was one of the more prominent theatres in Mumbai for film releases during the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Films like Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Baazigar’, Jaya Prada’s ‘Sargam’, and Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Tezaab’ were screened there. A film critic, who used to frequent the hall, adds, “This theatre made Madhuri Dixit, Shah Rukh Khan, and Jaya Pradha into stars as all these films ran for several weeks and drew an audience from all around the main city of Mumbai. ‘Bhuvan Shome’, one of the first art films, was screened in a matinee show here”.

    Excerpts

On the first day of my job, I went to the make-up studio and switched on a tubelight. Ramanand Sagar, who worked there, told me that extras could not use the lights.

I felt bad, and told him that one day, I will become a bigger actor, and he would come to me.

A voice from behind me said, ‘Great! Maintain this spirit.’

It was Prithviraj Kapoor. From that day, we became friends.

There was a government scheme in those days called the Annuity Policy (the policy allowed one to save money for retirement).

In those days, Income Tax taxed higher income people more than 90 percent — it was like taking away the whole income.

Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Bharat Bhushan and other actors took Annuity Policies instead of their salaries directly from the producer. Then there was a scam, and the government withdrew the policy and the money. So the actors would hold meetings after meetings to get their money back. Still, nothing happened.

Since I was president of the Cine Art Association then, I had to go to Delhi to represent the actors. I told them we would go to the Supreme Court if the money wasn’t returned.

The money was eventually returned, and all the actors in the industry hailed me!

I would have attended kavi sammelans with Jan Nisar Akhtar (Javed Akhtar’s father), Sahir Ludhianvi and Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan was a child then, and would often accompany his father.

The best thing about those times is that actors did not have vanity vans, so we would all sit together and chat.

The trio of Rangeela, Ghulam and Sarfarosh was instrumental in breaking the chocolate-boy image of Aamir in the late nineties.

As for box office, ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ was a rage and it took a bumper opening. Its business in Mumbai circuit alone out grossed 95% of Akshay films in the nineties. Looks like you have taken a cue from Shivaay to downgrade Aamir’s hits. Ghulam was actually a bigger hit than Sarfarosh as per ROI. Nahta had it AA(Superhit) in Mumbai circuit, which was a big deal even in the nineties and not just now.

Rangeela was a bigger hit, but that had a lot to do with Urmila’s body show.

“Sunny Deol was a loud-mouth idiot whose dumb films were a pain in the arse to watch” – Rajkumar Santoshi’s trio of Ghayal, Damini & Ghatak were solid content oriented masala films of the 90s that molded Sunny the way he was meant to be (far better films than Gadar imo). Santoshi’s one of the better film makers out there & hence no one else could make the most of Sunny’s limitations. Rangeela was more of a tapori version of a chocolate hero, good performance in a mediocre film. Haven’t watched Ghulam, Sarfarosh was & remains one of the best action thrillers from Hindi cinema ever (only held back slightly by Sonali’s dumb antics).

Ghulam was more a mediocre movie but with an outstanding khandala song dance perfomance and a good train sequence in first half. The entire second half was unconvincing.

Anyway, this purpose of posting old movies of Aamir khan and eliciting response was a jice attempt. Wake me up when the release date of Aamir’s next is announced. For.old movies i have OTT. Dont need to chat here.

On The Waterfront is a classic. Ghulam is an Indianized adaptation of it, which was quite good. Whereas, Rangeela maybe a meta film, but it was quite mediocre as a film; although perhaps one of Ramu’s better films. Sarfarosh is an accepted classic in its genre.

Adaptations/remakes have their own value of reinterpreting the source material. A film does not become any less just because it was an adaptation/remake. Aamir had the best filmography among his contemporaries even in the nineties, but many of them were remakes, which does not make them any less:

          QSQT
          DHKMN

Talking about Rangeela, I think the hype around its 25 years is enough to prove that it along with AAA and JJWS are Aamir’s most iconic films from the 90s. Ghulam is essentially a carryover from Rangeela’s Munna. There hasn’t been a film that depicts the Bombay film industry, specifically in the 90s in such a fantasy manner while still covering a great deal of the happenings. The music, the songs are simply extraordinary both as audio and visual. The cinematography, lighting and technique were first class. It’s essentially plot-less, but each part is so great and even if fluff, it’s brilliantly made fluff. I think you and Shivaay are simply not fans of the genre.

Since you are a self-proclaimed regular theater viewer of the nineties, one does not need to explain the what section of audience these Sunny Deol/Akshay Kumar flicks used to cater to.

Leaving that aside, even in today’s terms there is a stark difference of ‘cinematic difference’ of watching Sherni and Black Widow in theaters.

Not every film is a Avatar, which needs to be hailed as a true cinematic experience. What really matters is the ‘shelf life’ of a film. Lets view it this way, how many Sunny Deol/Akshay Kumar flicks are watchable today? None is the frank answer you will get from most cinema lovers. Ghulam is a much more refined take on the genre that is watchable even today. Partly because it was an adaptation of a classic.

Revisited Gadar Ek Prem Katha on its 20th anniversary.

I hadn’t liked it much at the time of its release, but thought maybe it would change my opinion now. But its mega success still eludes me.
The best thing about it is its first half, where everything falls into place nicely. However, the fluency in the narrative here is still no match for Sunny’s better films like Ghayal and Damini.
And the second half is where it magnificently falls apart. Its loud, brash, and melodramatic with the sensibilities of 80s potboilers. When Tara Singh escapes with his family, it becomes laughable. Maybe it would have been still made some sense if Anil Sharma’s direction was assured. Even the action scenes, supposedly the highlight, were not convincing.

The film’s mega success can be attributed to Pak bashing and the jingoistic flavor that the masses fell for. To compare this film with Lagaan, a far more superior film in every aspect, be it acting, directing, music, cinematography, production design, etc. would be a travesty. I suppose Gadar is still remembered for being the biggest success of the 21st century, but it was a very average film that rode on the ‘nationalism’ wave.

Basically, if you don’t watch cricket, you really can’t enjoy this movie at that level and then it becomes 2 hours cricket match without enjoying the details about cricket. I don’t see how an interior audience is supposed to find that entertaining movie when almost the whole movie is about cricket match. Both DCH and Lagaan, I have no issues if outside city audience don’t love it. They had to make this movie as per the subject and better to not add variations to cater to interiors.

A hyperbolic over the top Uri with Sunny Deol like dialogues & caricatures still rakes in millions while a far more refined, technically brilliant (and labored to an extent) Lakshya would have tasted moderate success even in today’s era. Lagaan was predominantly a metropolitan city film that didn’t penetrate well into the tier 2 & 3 centers (for unknown reasons). As for Gadar, the Ghayal or Ghatak yardstick is too high for this movie. It does not even light a candle against the equally jingoistic & cringy Border predominantly due to Border’s exceptionally well shot and choreographed battle scenes.

Cant say this film has aged well. Incidentally both blockbusters of Aamir in nineties (Raja Hindustani and this) are hardly a comparison with his other films in the nineties, but they were the biggest hits.

Among the early romantic Hits of Aamir, I wud anyday take the trio of QSQT, DHKMN and HHRPK over Dil/Raja Hindustani. JJWS was the best, but was not a Hit film.

I don’t think that’s true, it’s just that Aamir or Hanks’ films in the romcom genre are simply not iconic films, with the exception of QSQT. Formula can never fall out of favor, all it needs is just freshness, like Crazy Rich Asians which would’ve been a 80s hindi film or a 90s romcom. The films that paved the formula get a life, even if the formula is HAHK.

Now that I think of it, both Sleepless in Seattle and Mann are inspired by An Affair To Remember. It’s also strange that Aamir is not called serial kisser.

          Like

        • A film first needs to be good to have shelf life. Being ‘iconic’ is more relevant to the time of its release, doesn’t necessarily imply long shelf life. QSQT has a timeless appeal rather than being a ‘iconic’ film.

But those who care abt old films will care abt QSQT, MPK, DDLJ (in order of release). Romance genre as such don’t age that well, except a rare few timeless films. Romantic stars are the most easily forgotten ones once their time is up. Its the nature of the genre.

I have a strong belief Aamir will end up making the biggest contribution to 21st century Hindi cinema. Check out the IMDB lists as well as the other favourites of cinephiles over the years: Lagaan, TZP, DCH, RDB, PK, 3 Idiots, and Dangal. At least two of these were turning points, inspiring filmmakers to unlearn what they knew about mainstream cinema and affecting change, quite like what we know about Hindi cinema off late.
Possibly and indirectly also killed the star culture to an extent, with the exception of Salman. While we were getting some good films thanks to Aamir’s sensibilities, we also got to, parallely, witness a ton of trash that started post Wanted/Dabangg, where commercial filmmakers were also trying their hand at masala filmmaking by remaking South films.

Star culture will never die, not here and neither in Hollywood. The model closest to what Aamir is attempting is like Dilip Kumar or Raj Kapoor. Perhaps Raj Kapoor is the better comparison in terms of the impact and “brand” they both have (also the China fanbase). That Aamir killed the need for a star to have a genre is debatable but partly true.

    • Regarding Lagaan, I do think it very much is one of the most superior films Hindi cinema ever made.

On the Gadar posts shared above, however, there is one thing where everyone here has missed the point completely: the performance of Sunny Deol. He absolutely rocked in that role. Tara Singh was made for him. You cannot imagine anyone else in there and his performance lifted the film by several levels.

Remember we are talking about times when after Ziddi and Border, for more than a decade, there barely was any action film working universally. At a time when no action film was working (it was the culminating period for Johar, Barjatyas, SRKs and action heroes were to turn towards comedy to survive), the audience were cheering and applauding for this man single handedly taking on a whole army on their land, defying them, roaring at them and vanquishing them all. His performance was perfect: gentle, affectionate, kind n caring in the romantic portions. But when his family.was threatened, he roared and as Rangan said ‘could move mountains’ on his own to protect them.

It has a huge part with how it worked big with millions of people. When Tara Singh challenged 1000s of men, the audiences believed it. Someone else in there, people would have laughed out of theatres and it would not have worked.

Another gem from BOI: Lagaan had a weak story, was mainly a Mumbai and South hit.

If this is the biggest box office site in India, god save the trade

Gadar – Ek Prem Katha is twenty years old today and still after twenty years of release it remains the last true blue mega blockbuster of the Hindi film industry. Yes there was Bahubali – The Conclusion which came in 2017 and is of similar stature but that film was from the Telugu film industry and not the Hindi film industry.

It actually looks the Hindi film industry may never give another blockbuster of the magnitude of Gadar but that is what it looks like at present due to the type of cinema being churned out but things can change in the future so there is always hope. No doubt there have been some huge blockbusters since Gadar like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal but despite being very good films they dont have that epic feeling of a Gadar or Bahubali to take them to to an even larger audience.

Gadar released on 15th June 2001 and it was a blockbuster on day one with packed housed across the country which remained through the first week. The second week collections came in even better as more prints were added in week two despite having a high print count in week one itself. In the first few weeks of release India had never seen such large crowds at theatres before. In 1994 Hum Aapke Hain Koun had become an insane blockbuster but that was in a different way as it unfolded slowly and over time.

Gadar Ek Prem katha eventually went on to do business of 77 crore nett and a share of 55 crore and this was at a time when a 25 crore nett number was good. The film did face negativity and even in the industry these NFDC type actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi were said to have made derogratory comments in the press about the film but these people would hardly know much about peoples cinema considering the cinema they had tried to drive or maybe it could have been some other agenda.

It was said to be anti Muslim but the biggest out performance of the film came in UP and Gujarat and in centres where there was a high percentage of Muslims. It performed even better than Punjab and Haryana in these places especially the Muslim centres of UP.

The film clashed with another film Lagaan which also scored well and was extraordinary in Mumbai and South but could not do that well in the Hindi states. It was said this was because of Gadar but that was not the case as at that time there was not a screen issue as both films got their respective screens on release and it was about how they would go on. Lagaan had a problem with its story as India had a huge struggle with British for years but here the makers were trying to tell audiences that the British would settle issues over a cricket match. This was okay for Mumbai and South but not for North, Central and East India where you need much stronger content in terms of the story.

The director of Gadar Ek Prem Katha had given major HITS before like Hukumat, Elaan E Jung and Tahelka but they were all in that the normal commercial action format but in Gadar he surpassed himself by some distance by deleviring a film with the action format but with such high poowered emotions.that it was unstoppable at the box office.

It’s simple to pick up your phone and scroll, or to get up and do some chores while half-watching what’s on screen. Interruption is everywhere, even if you have the best of intentions. • Got to learn how to live with this virus as a society now. Cannot stay in a permanent state of restrictions & lockdowns as mutations are a never ending process. Vaccinating the population asap and organized structured reopening is the only long term solution (in spite of mini spikes). UKs adopting the right route in my opinion despite a 3rd wave right now. As for India, I don’t see theaters reopening full time till 80% of the population is fully vaccinated and that’s till next summer (partial re-openings in the south might happen on an on-off basis).

        Like

        • UK is cautious, now, finally. They made a cock up with Delta in Apr otherwise we’d be open now. They know about delta plus too but vaccine is now offered to anyone above 18. So they have done spectacularly on that front. So Jun 20st is pushed back to July 19th. That Apr mess up added 4 weeks.
I believe about 30 odd cases from piloted events over past couple of months.
You are right in that in long run given mutations people will have to find a way of living with this.
It’s crazy – my kids school is closed from Jun 18th for 10 days due topositive case, then we get told it won’t reopen on 29th June as it should but the week after on Jul 5th. This kind of stuff is not easy to manage.

The main aim for any country is to get levels down to the point where hospitals can cope and work close to normal. That will only happen once 70-80% are vaccinated.

          Like

        • But UK had its numbers rising too last week and despite leading in vaccination, we can see the numbers rising again.

We are fighting an unknown, getting the know a bit and before we rest, a new unknown appears about the same.

          Look at this rise..

Well aware of rise and data but predominantly under control. The key figures are whether cases translated into hospitalisation or severe illness. Most people affected are not vaccinated and that is the younger population here – The population that has better chances of recovery.

        • Shivaay Says:

The cases are rising because UK is back to near normal lifestyle to a 70% extent. Vaccine’s are primarily gonna help reduce hospitalization & mortality, the case load is bound to fluctuate unless a high proportion of 80% population is fully vaccinated. Its still gonna take about a year for us to completely learn to co exist with this pathogen & there are gonna be waves & hiccups on the way but the process has very much begun.

      • Yes, having one movie on the works is the best situation now. It can be released when the market becomes normal. I expect biggies like LSC, Pathan, Tiger 3 to release only in the last half of 2022.

A fair analysis if watched with a sane mind.

Lets see if they can wrap up this last schedule before the third wave hits badly enough.

Pathan has also resumed shooting and is trying for a Eid release if things fall in place by then.

The demand side is not bothered while the supply side is worried.

The people are more worried about jobs, schools, salaries, travel, well equipped hospitals, vaccinations, travel etc.. The last thing on their minds is watching films in theatres. The youngsters are hooked onto their smartphones. There is nothing new to watch even on OTT most of the time.

Actor Payal Rohatgi Arrested For “Threatening” Neighbours: Report
Actor Payal Rohatgi allegedly abused society members during the meeting and posted an abusive message on the society’s WhatsApp group, the FIR claimed.

An FIR or police case was registered against her on Thursday based on a complaint filed by society chairman Parag Shah, inspector AS Roy of Satellite police station said.

The 36-year-old actor, who has been living with her parents in a posh society in Ahmedabad’s Satellite area for the last over one year, was charged for uttering obscene words (IPC section 294-b), intentional insult (504) and criminal intimidation (506), said inspector Roy, quoting the FIR or First Information Report.

According to news agency Press Trust of India, in his complaint, Mr Shah claimed that Payal Rohatgi has been harassing society members including children for some time, and she once even threatened children that she would “break their legs” if they played in the common area of the society.

Although she does not own a house in the society herself, she attended its annual general meeting with her parents on June 20 and refused to leave despite being pointed out that she was not a member, Mr Shah alleged.

About Lagaan, let me say that even after watching this film so many times, when the final match still has me jumping on my seat in anxiety and I get goosebumps when it finally rains in Champaner as Ghannan Ghannan plays, that ARR’s music and score still evoke the same freshness despite its familiarity, that I still marvel at its frames, its pace, its performers. On a lighter note, it seems Aamir romancing a firang to AR Rahman’s music makes the film a classic.

The first one with ali fazal was good and it reminded me of Chekhov’s stories. The Kay Kay Menon one was spoilt by the last makeup given to him. Excerpts

The Andhra Pradesh government is doing an unusual experiment in the education sector. In 2019, it introduced English as the medium in government schools from class I to VI — a move stuck in legal trouble. Now the government has made English the medium of teaching in all UG colleges. The state’s young and ambitious chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had to fight several battles to do so.

The hypocrite intelligentsia of the state, who educate their own children in costly private English-medium schools, opposed the move and made it a huge ‘mother tongue’ issue. They shouted ‘mother tongue is like mother’s milk’. When the shouting did not cow down Jagan, they went to court.

Jagan also made one Telugu subject compulsory in private and government schools, and ordered all textbooks to be printed in bilingual mode. The same lesson will have the English version on one page and the Telugu version on the other for all subjects. His critics had no option but to keep quiet because this also pushed their own children into learning two languages, even in private schools. Many private English medium schools till then were not allowing Telugu learning at all.

        • Pitt was a bit of a boy scout through the film and his reaction towards the end was not entirely organic. He did passable but he’s perhaps the weakest link in the casting. Thanks to Freeman’s masterclass & Spacey’s brilliance, Pitt’s partial ham up can be conveniently ignored. Its the exceptional narrative of a shock inducing story that really kept the audience hooked from start to finish. As is with most classics, director David Fincher is the star of the show.
