  2. The film’s overall tone is obviously high on patriotism. Many combat scenes don’t reflect the large canvas that the film is set up on, perhaps more deserving of a big screen experience. Yet, as an industry, Bollywood has seldom churned out epic war films that have been critically and commercially acclaimed. By those standards, ‘Shershaah’ ranks high than most of the recent war dramas and tells an inspiring story that needs to be told.

The source material of this film is so strong that it is bound to grip you once the men in uniform take it upon themselves to drive out the enemy and reclaim our land. ‘Shershaah’s biggest victory is its effort to recreate one of the most important chapters of our recent history with characters, who lead the way to a rousing climax.

Only Hindi cinema’s capable of giving a war martyr a tribute that’s so much of a sham. Last year it was Gunjan Saxena this year its Shershaah, don’t be surprised if he casts Arjun Rampal as Sam Manekshaw in his next based on 1971.

Finally done with watching Scam 1992. If ever there is a swadesi online classic in the true sense, this is the one. A stellar cast led by a flawless Pratik Gandhi & co (brilliant cameo by Rajat Kapoor in there), a breezy edge of the seat screenplay and memorable dialogues with a no nonsense apolitical approach that calls a spade, a spade. After Raj & DK, Hansal Mehta’s the next Bollywood director whose proved that making elaborated content is his forte and comfort zone than making 2 hour films. Scam 92 however leaves every other Indian television show far far behind by leaps and bounds. Not only is this the best of 21st century Indian television, it wouldn’t be an understatement to call this one of India’s greatest web/TV shows ever. 10/10

      • Delhi Crime is very predictable and politically correct. Nothing much to watch there apart from stellar performances from the leads. Better to watch a 1 hour youtube documentary on the Nirbhaya investigation than the 8 episode series. Haven’t watched Asur.

Urban parents would be pretty happy to leave their kids at the mercy of online learning (making them retards in the process) while suicide rates among rural kids would exponentially increase (and go unreported just like today). The west would learn to move on with life (UK & Europe already have) while our crooked politicians would continue with bogus tactics like weekend & night curfews driving more towards bankruptcy until the working class take matters up in their own hands & start a riot.

  11. Suberbly articulated !! Still remember the release of Mohra in 94. It was the biggest opening on 94.

    Liked by 1 person

    • This was one of the best movie of my childhood where only thing that mattered was fight. I was small then and remember watching it in theatre. The songs used to play every where. It was an even film. With virtually newcomers as stars and coming close to Khalnayak (’93 release) black market ticket sales was unheard of.

This was possibly the biggest opening (Day 1) that the next gen Salman/SRK/Aamir/Akshay got. Akshay/Suneil were then not even in Top 10. Of course same year HAHK came but it had a different box office trajectory as the WoM took over the smaller release. But Mohra still ran for 15 weeks + across several mass centres.

Naseer was the surprise packet as we thought Gulshan grover and Raza Muraad were the main villains. The twist was outstanding.

The climax where Naseer beats the hell out of the top 2 action star of that time was unbelievable. Before the movie Tu cheez was the craze. After the release Tip Tip became more popular.
Na Kazare ki dhaar remain one of my favourite till date as a dim and wine moment song.

  28. Baiju Bawra, the 1952 megahit starring Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari, ran in theatres for 100 weeks. The storyline of this classic movie is melodramatic in the extreme, with as many unlikely twists and turns as the Yamuna river. The tragic, ill-fated, over-romanticised romance won Meena Kumari her first Filmfare award, and the audience couldn’t get enough of Naushad’s immortal music. Given the emotional peaks of the narrative (besides the royal setting of Emperor Akbar’s magnificent court studded with his hand-picked navratnas), a contemporary remake was inevitable.

The one for the woman didn’t have the prices and the one for men did. The first time we went together we had like ₹400. We went for this dinner and we just started out in life and we hardly had any money. By mistake, I got the menu card with the money and Naseer got the menu card without the money, so he was ordering left and right. With facial expressions, I was trying to warn him about the bill. Each regime change makes continuity not possible even to save women and kids of other countries. Ghani should have consolidated his hold on the army while he was ruling. Too much dependence on other countries in matters of defence is a sign of weakness.

        • @Sanjana, this was initiated by Trump. The Democrats had all the time to assess the situation on ground. If each and every decision, taken by Trump, is/was wrong, then why did the Biden admin not sit down and weigh the pros and cons? If Trump was dumb, what were you doing after you came to office?

It is true that Ghani had to work hard; he didn’t. You think the US didn’t know Ghani’s strong and weak points?

@Aman: *Easy to say with a Green Card. At least corpses were not floating in the Mississippi.*

Really, Aman? When I was so enjoying your debates and writing, you come up with this? You resort to the favorite weapon of the ‘liberals’? What-aboutery? And the Green Card comment is below the belt: But that’s fine, I have faced this barb and far worse even from Satyam, so am cool. However, since you have brought it up — I am presuming it is for me — let me state that I don’t have a Green Card, and NEVER on God’s not so green earth am I going to relinquish my Indian citizenship. I care a hoot about being an American citizen. Just not interested.

My broader point is the number of mistakes the US has committed in its foreign policy. It NEVER LEARNS FROM ITS MISTAKES [there’s a reason I put out the Charlie Wilson War’s clip];  be they Democrats or Republicans. They are known, and will continue to be known, with this mis-adventure, starting with the loot and murder of innocent Iraqis with false, ego-fattened maniacs like that Dick ‘Cheney.’ Then they went to Afghanistan and screwed it up. Then they came in a chopper and killed OBL right around 10 miles from a Pak military base, where the asshole was comfortably watching porn and fornicating for 5 years. What do they do? The DON’T impose any sanctions, they don’t punish the Pakistani government, but present them with more outdated planes. Hillary Clinton has the gall to say, ‘If you breed snakes in your back-yard, you cannot expect them not to bite you one day!’ Yeah right! And then you sell them arms the next day, to fight ‘extremists’ which they conveniently use against India!

They deserted Saigon, they deserted Afghanistan now. You say this is ‘expected.’ Really? Then what the hell kind of an intelligence operation US has? In July Biden says a complete overtaking of Afghanistan by the Taliban is just not possible. What changed in 30 days? How does it matter that Vietnam and US are allies now? How many lives were lost? How many tax dollars? What’s the tangible benefit?

Either way, the US has to face the issue now of Delhi-to-Daulatabad and Daulatabad-to-Delhi a la-Tughlaq. It is ‘fleeing’ back its soldiers to Afghanistan and it is laughable to say the least.

Forget me, even CNN and its ilk are questioning Biden! When CNN and Wa Po get pissed, Biden better beware! This will be a big wake-up call for Biden. How he handles the ‘eastern’ part of the world, who are his enemies, and who are his friends.

And for the so-called statement that America takes care of its citizens: Yes it does, we have seen that with African-Americans. Also, that ‘taking care’ comes at the cost of murder and loot of civilizations across the world…

Oh BTW, the playboy-turned-puppet-Mullah PM from Pakistan claims this is an ‘independence’ achieved. So let’s wait for the day when the ‘good’ Taliban doesn’t meet up with Pakistan and its cohorts JEM and whatever the hell the names those ‘freedom’ fighters keep..

Meanwhile, it’s been close to 6 years, am waiting for the concentration camps in India …

And please, bring on some matters of geo-strategic politics: Not dumb stuff like lynch-mobs, ‘Jai Shree Ram’, ‘Love Jihad’, massive CV-19 second-wave failure, yada yada yada…It’s been understood, recognized, and has been spit on the face of the current ruling establishment, including people like ME who will never forgive them for this unpardonable blunder ….

        • Aman,

The reference to corpses and India’s 2nd wave is not a true representation of government.

It is a cultural issue where society due to rumours were not allowing cremation of bodies departing due to virus.

Cremation grounds for Muslims, Hindus, Christians etc had huge resistance from locals living nearby who claimed that the virus may enter their home via soild, air etc.

Hence even those who can afford cremation did so in the river.

          So have an understanding.

Also, the 2nd wave was like a cloud burst even. With thousands lining up at hospital, it was not possible for any government to be prepared for the tragedy.

The overnight cases shot by 20 times at places which were already working at 80% capacity.

I think we undermine our work in failures.

The first wave of Covid was a cloud burst. When countries like the UK and South Africa went a horrific second wave despite handling the first wave well, this Govt had no contingency. Deliberately structuring the WB election in 9 phases so that our prime minister could have his fun campaigning with a Tagore beard and tastelessly boasting about the size of his crowd at a time when we were already witnessing 2 lakh+ covid cases.

Not starting vaccination at war foot level was a mistake aided by callous opposition raising questions on credibility of vaccines akd spread of rumours among Muslims that this BJP vaccine will make them infertile (As if Jannat ki hoprnis ready for the mankind).

However no expert were able to tell when and in what capacity covid 2 was coming.

Consider these elections etc were not there in 7 phases. Would it have made covid 2 less painful ?

          No. Not at all.

          “spread of rumours among Muslims”
There is no widespread report of this, and even if this happened, the fact that you compare this with a party handling the administration simply shows how hard it is to defend the Centre’s negligence.

“However no expert were able to tell when and in what capacity covid 2 was coming.”

The SBI report got it accurately, IHME was already pointing to a second wave at mid March, so did most other models. When the second wave was in full swing, with 2 lakh cases per day, our Prime Minister was boasting about the size of his crowds. It was after Rahul Gandhi suspended his rallies, that this overblown, power hungry maniac stopped his campaign.

“Consider these elections etc were not there in 7 phases. Would it have made covid 2 less painful ?”

So you’re saying it wouldn’t have saved lives if the election was quickly done?

With 6,000 U.S. troops expected back in Afghanistan guarding its airport this week, Biden will have much to answer for, including: how could the U.S., with all its military might and intelligence infrastructure, so entirely fail to see how quickly the Taliban would take over the country? How could an Afghan military built up with more than $80 billion in U.S. taxpayer support collapse in just days?

After he announced his decision in April to withdraw forces by September, Biden said the U.S. would maintain an “over the horizon” capability to step back into Afghanistan if needed to counter terrorists.

But America’s mission in Afghanistan, realistically or not, was long pitched as being about more than going after the perpetrators of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Aid workers and contractors, backed by American and NATO military forces, poured billions of dollars into infrastructure projects and efforts to wean Afghan farmers off poppy production, the basis of the opium trade.

  39. However, diplomats in Kabul blame British Army Chief Nick Carter for blindsiWhile India is awaiting its turn to evacuate its diplomats and key people, reports from Kabul indicate utter chaos with the Taliban cadre firing bullets to even regulate traffic and with no government to enforce the law. “The Taliban is trying to tell everyone that they will not take retaliatory or vengeful measures against anyone but the public is not convinced. To add to their fears, the Taliban is going door to door in Kabul with a list of government officials and journalists who wrote or spoke against them in the past,” said a civilian on phone from Kabul.

ding the US and cutting out a bad deal with the Taliban, leading to the ensuing chaos. The Chinese, Pakistanis and Russians, on their part, are enjoying their schadenfreude moment at the cost of the Joe Biden administration. It is another matter that the first decision to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan was taken by then President Barack Obama (Joe Biden was his Vice President) in June 22, 2011, speech on surge and then withdrawal of troops by 2014.

According to Kabul watchers, the situation in Afghan capital is extremely precarious with sundry extremist and terrorist groups affiliated to so-called Islamic state, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Tayebba (LeT) setting up road-blocks all over the city and making outlandish demands on hapless commuters. That a large section of Kabulites want to be evacuated is also a reflection on the popularity of the those who according to Pakistan PM delivered Afghanistan from 20 years of slavery.

“Salman approached me at a stage when I was in talks with Junglee Pictures. He wanted Shershaah to be Aayush’s [Sharma] debut film, and wanted to partner with me on it,” he told Mid-Day. However, the family ‘unanimously seconded’ on the idea of Sidharth playing the Param Vir Chakra awardee by then and a meeting between the actor and the family was already arranged.

“It would have been highly unethical to drop him for another actor. When Captain Batra’s family gave me the rights, it was a big moment for me. They showed immense trust in me, and I didn’t want to go wrong at any step. I explained [my predicament] to Salman, who was understanding. Aayush was sweet and sportingly said that playing a double role in his debut movie might be [a tall order],” he added.

Israel – Anyone in power who has supported / encouraged Nazis

South Africa – Any one in power who has supported / encouraged racial abuse

Same way in india who who have done atrocities on religious lines is not the name you would want to have for your child. Again this is totally parent’s choice. But u do keep local sentiments right?

Indian catholics have overcome this name problem by naming their kids Vikram, Shyamala, Pavitra, Suguna, Sunanda, Pratap, Raj, Anand, Vijay etc. Remember Amritraj brothers? Ashok, Vijay and Anand?

Hindus dont name their kids after Raavan, Duryodhan, Shurpanakha. I dont know about Srilanka which is the place of Raavan as a King. Lankesh is a popular name in Karnataka.

I was browsing Quora and I found some interesting comments.

“Not at all popular. You may come across the name Ravana very rarely. Indrajeet , you may find more. I don’t think anybody names their children Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna, surphanaka or mandodari. Of course Meghna is a popular name and you may take it as a corrupted form of meghnath, another name of f Indrajeet. Ravana’s son who died fighting Hanuma on his first visit to Lanka is Akshya Kumar which has s a popular name, but now body recalls it as the name of a son of Ravana.”

“Look at Mahabharata. Does a proud mothet like Gandhari name her children Duryodhana, Dusshasana, and a daughter, Dusdhala. ”
