  1. Runway 34 is releasing this week too..Won’t be any competition to Jersey..Looks like not much interest/discussion on this forum or buzz for it? Hopefully it will turn out to be sleeper hit.

  9. Musk was presumably referring to the OTT giant coming under fire in the recent past for content that was deemed exclusionary in ways more than one. For instance, last year, Netflix was criticised for Dave Chappelle’s standup special The Closer, which was deemed by many as transphobic.

And, this is not the first time when the Tesla boss has compared being woke to a virus.

Earlier, the tech billhttps://www.ndtv.com/world-news/elon-musk-says-woke-mind-virus-is-making-netflix-unwatchable-2902818#pfrom=home-ndtv_topstoriesionaire had stated that “wokeness” is the “biggest threat to civilization.” Speaking to the satire website, Babylon Bee, Musk had argued that political correctness is one of the greatest threats to civilization. In particular, he also called out attempts to cancel Dave Chappelle and went on to criticise “woke agenda” and “cancel culture.”

  10. KGF 2 is setting the domestic and international box office on fire. But there are indeed a fair few illogical scenes in the film. For instance, there is this one scene in which Rocky Bhai aka Yash opens fire inside the Indian parliament and shoots ex prime minister who is seated right behind the then prime minister. Then there is this one crazy far fetched ship sequence set in international waters. This sequence isn’t the most convincing one as far as novelty goes. Recently, the ship sequence in Radhe Shyam was badly trolled and even KGF’s ship sequence might have ended up as troll worthy one, such is its content. Luckily for KGF 2, these illogical scenes were outweighed by the commercially packed high voltage scenes. Had any Telugu mainstream star done those scenes, they would’ve been trolled badly for the same.

  13. Some basic data I have compiled via sacnilk
    For 2022

    Hindi Net in 2022: 1003.33 Cr / 16 Movies
    Kannada Net in 2022: 167.64 Cr / 10 Movies
    Malayalam Net in 2022: 126.37 Cr / 11 Movies
    Tamil Net in 2022: 384.65 Cr / 14 Movies
    Telugu Net in 2022: 830.965 Cr / 24 Movies

Above story is language which is little bit hiding origin of industry

    But here goes…
    At India level 2022
    Top grossing industry
    Tollywood – 1,120Cr
    Sandalwood – 604Cr
    Bollywood – 554Cr
    Kollywood – 327Cr

    The best gross/film (WW/film)
Indian – 118Cr (radhe shyam but only one film so ignore but maybe it belongs to an industry)
    Tollywood – 112Cr
    Sandalwood – 101Cr
    Bollywood – 79Cr
    Kollywood – 47Cr

Best total gross/ budget ratios (WW/budget)
    Sandalwood- 4.5x
    Mollywood – 3.1x
    Tollywood- 2.2x
    Bollywood – 1.5x

Nothing I’ve said is wrong. Based on only 4months of data so far in 2022, Bollywood is a bloated industry. High cost, lower return relative to peers.

Sandalwood and Tollywood have grossed more per film and have better gross to budget ratios. This is WITHOUT XMAS, EID OR DIWALI

I’ve ignored Hollywood as overseas will contaminate a bit.

On top of above Bollywood will have TKF which will have probably highest gross to budget ratio on list at 17x (Ww gross / budget) yet Bollywood still is below Marathi, Mollywood, sandalwood and Tollywood.

I don’t think the data is lying. There are some truths here. Instead of ignoring them, man up and rise to the challenge!

      Like

      • It’s a natural concern. It’s what my childhood was more about film wise. Also feels like a big spin has been applied by Bollywood. I have several thoughts on this. Not purely box office.

I’ve said that here all we’ve been fed is chips (Bollywood) and now someone said pasta was always there (non Bollywood).

I’m not saying chips is better or vice versa. But surely you can see the spin.

Just look at a site like BOI. The B is actually Bollywood in reality. There is no narrative till they have been forced into action by South and Hollywood to report more broadly.

        This is ultimately fake news.

I am merely pointing to better information for all at all India level. You can still stick by your story as to why Bollywood deserves % credit etc.

  16. Prabhas will next appear alongside Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone in highly-anticipated movie ‘Project K’. Sources suggest that the creators are to incorporate a new technology in the making of this movie. The film is being shot with Arri Alexa technology, making it the first Indian film to use this cutting-edge technology. Arri Alexa Technology is a digital motion picture camera system, which is used in the cinematography of sci-fi thrillers. The goal is to enhance the visual experience, while the technology will not interfere with the emotions in the drama.

‘Project K’, directed by Nag Ashwin, is expected to be one of the most expensive projects in Indian cinema. Billed as a sci-fi thriller, the makers have collaborated with top IT company Mahindra, to deliver the best output possible. Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and other biggies are to play major roles in the film.

  21. On any other day, Jersey could have taken the opening of 15-20 crores, keeping Shahid Kapoor’s stardom. However, with KGF 2 being the first choice of moviegoers, Jersey, might reduce to the opening of 5-7 crores on the first day, which will be considered a decent start. The advance of the film till April 20 is around 70 lakh, which is very low. The makers are looking very confident about their product, and if it meets with the audience’s expectation, then it could build upon that and score a healthy weekend of around 25-27 crores.

This is v surprising. Shahid’s last film Kabir Singh opened at 20 cr, did a weekend of 70 cr and ended at 278 cr. A true blockbuster. Jersey’s trailers and songs are good. Shahid seems to have acted well. Its a remake of a good film and the reviews so far has been good. Its getting healthy share of shows as far as i can see in bookmyshow.com.

So how come everyone is expecting such a low opening?

    • I wouldn’t worry about opening too much. WOM spreads so quickly that 6Cr prediction can easily be 10Cr+ if movie works.

But larger point is these openings are not good signs. The good signs are reviews seem positive so in the end as long as audience matches reviews the collections are bound to clawback whatever the opening has lost.

      Like

      • I can understand an usual 20 cr opening to be downplayed to 15 cr or so because of the KGF2 wave. But predicting 5-7 cr is over the top imo. I think the predictions are just wrong. It shud take 10-15 cr opening day. The rest can be compensated with growth over the weekend. But with a 5-6 cr opening you basically loose too much ground to recover. Also next week there are double releases in Heropanti 2 and Runway 34 – so shows will decrease a lot. Dont see much scope for great trending even if the movie is good. It will need a decent opening at least.

The team effort behind him is strengthened by the performances from Mrunal Thakur, who lends a quite grace to conveying both the inner turmoil and the fortitude of a woman holding firm amid many an upheaval, and Ronit Kamra, a confident child actor who played the same role in the Telugu original.

Although the character of the hero’s cricket mentor, a man who has never graduated beyond being the assistant coach of the Punjab team, isn’t etched out with sufficient clarity, Pankaj Kapur, being the actor he is, sails through the role with aplomb.

In one sequence, when the character has gone from being old to very old, Kapur effects a sharp intonation change and holds a consistent line with it. Pure magic. Had Jersey packed more such strokes into its repertoire, it would have shone much brighter.

Pankaj Kapoor delivers a lovely, relaxed performance, which shows up the constriction of the son, who appears much more in command when he is smashing fours and sixes on the field, and too morose off it. The reason for his sliding off the scale is left as a big reveal in the remake, but it comes too late: the original version had let us in on it right in the beginning, and that had helped us understand the depth of the hero’s pain.

The movie has some extremely good moments and it will work very well in normal circumstances. I am not surprised by the low opening as these kind of genres dont open well but still 5 cr is too low here. I will be disappointed if this doesnt have legs. The Bollywood distributors are happy to make their profits out of dubbed southern films as long as they make profits. The exhibitors just need audiences, regardless of which film is running. The current lot of Bollywood directors hardly give a dime about delivering big mega grossers (barring the likes of Bhansali and Shetty who’ll continue delivering their Hits and Semi Hits). The likes of SRK, Aamir, Salman, Akshay, Ajay and even Hrithik to an extent have already delivered what they had to over the last 2-3 decades and their box office filmography doesn’t matter anymore. The biggest losers from this southern onslaught on the Hindi hinterland are the new generation Bollywood stars like Ranbir, Ranveer, Shahid, Vicky, Varun, Tiger and Ayushmaan who were expected to carry the legacy of stardom forward. Its a common saying that the generation of the Khans, Kumar and Roshan were the last gen of true Bollywood superstars. The next gen might well be the likes of Prabhas, Allu Arjun and Ram Charan even in the Hindi hinterland!

    • I was thinking on the same lines.
How long can the south stars keep up the heat and steam? What stories are they going to tell in VFX? Do we need more theatres?

      • What VFX? Bollywood itself is terrible in VFX. South will deliver pan india masala. Salaar and Pushpa 2 loading for 2023. Some other south film may also find audience in the hindi hinterland this year.

Its more about storytelling and narrative, the writers and direction. None of the actors dubbed in Hindi anyway. Bahubali was helped immensely by Sharad Kelkar’s voice and Pushpa was a Maharashtrian rage thanks to Talpade’s voice alone!

If it is a flop, it’s a flop. Which review of JHUND talks of its box-office moolah? All that the reviews talk of are the coming together of two greats; a director and an actor for decades/centuries. Let the people who are paid to worry about the balance sheet worry about them. Why you? And what’s the sadistic joy in enjoying an 80 year old actor’s film not doing well?

This has depth and can have many interpretations than what we watched in cinemas. We are created and our lives are a big drama. Famous people have biographies and films on them and we watch the real drama on reel. From Gandhi’s bio to Thatcher’s. From Dhoni to Dangal. From Mahanti to Sanju. So on and so forth. At the end of it, the bios are either whitewashed or half hearted. But reality tv is different. Bigboss showed the dirty side and people want to watch those fights. They are also manufactured.
Apart, how live tv and reality tv can go to any extent to get those ratings. What we see on the screen maybe inspirational or exploitationof emotions. The chilling callousness of the producers and the ordinary citizen’s voyeurism. Betrayal by all and indifference towards the pain being undergone by the victim.

The choice is to be made. Become plastic puppets with no growth or go out and face the world and growup naturally. Enjoy the challenges without others watching every moment of it.

A lesson to overprotective parents too. A lesson to dictators. A lesson to communists. A lesson to capitalists. A lesson to reckless marketing.

A debate on freewill and preprogrammed fatalism or destiny.

But there is only one actor who once he became a lead has never relinquished that position. That, according to a new study of how interactions in Bollywood can predict actors’ success, is Amitabh Bachchan.

“None of our theories work for Amitabh Bachchan,” said Sarika Jalan, an associate professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Indore, who led the study. “We cannot define whether he is a supporting or a lead actor because he always comes out as the lead and defies all predictions and theories. He is very different from others.”

  58. Tendulkar even refused to participate in the ‘Oo La La La Le O’ commercial – which had a plethora of cricketers across states and countries and clubs. The reason was quite simple. The company that was running the advertisement also produced alcohol.

Back in 2020, Sachin Tendulkar also revealed why he stayed away from any association of brands that produce either tobacco or alcohol. He said that it was a promise that he made to his father long ago before making it big in the field of sports.

At Aaj Tak’s ‘2020 Salaam Cricket’, the Masterblaster said, “This was a promise I made to my father. He told me I am a role model and a lot of people will follow what you do.” The legendary skipper understood the impact he had on people as a leading sportsperson who was playing for Team India.

Even during the 90s era when most of his colleagues were promoting brands of tobacco or alcohol, Sachin Tendulkar stayed away from it. He even refused to put a single sticker of any such brands on his bat. “In the 1990s my bat didn’t have a sticker on it, I didn’t have a contract. But everybody else in the team was endorsing 2 brands in particular … ” he said.

“I have stayed away from these two things and have never broken the promise to my father,” the former Team India cricketer said.

A Times Of India report from 2010 reveals Sachin Tendulkar was offered Rs 20 crore from UB Group to promote their product but he rejected it. Maharashtra Government at that time even lauded the legendary cricketer for setting the right example. This is not the first time he turned down a commercial like this.

  65. Saturday Box Office Update: KGF 2 And Jersey
    Saturday 23 April 2022 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jersey is heading towards growth of around 40-50% on its second day and should collect around 5.25-5.50 crore nett. The growth on Saturday has come from the higher end properties from metros as a place like Chandigarh sees 73% growth and the bigger properties of NCR are similar to give that area big growth as well. Bangalore and Mumbai should also see big growth.

If this sort of growth had come across India then the film would have been on a stronger footing. Now the film will get growth of around 40-50% at an all India level and keep the hope that the film can have a Monday near the Friday number which is a must for any sort of run. If Monday cant get over the 3 crore nett mark then it will be over. The audience profile of this type of film gives some hope that Monday can be near Friday, if its a film like Attack then you know there is little chance The likes of Maharashtra, Gujarat and MP are not performing for the film and these places are coming down hard on the more urban content post the pandemic.

KGF 2 is will have an extraordinary Saturday and growth can be do around 17-17.50 crore nett. The multiplex growth all over is phenomenal and could end at around 70% but the film has a huge ratio of business coming from mass pockets where the growth will be less.

If the film manages to get 17 crore nett or higher it will take the film to a huge 291 crore nett and it could be a second weekend nearing the 50 crore nett mark which is a huge number. The film was lower than RRR (hindi) on Friday but has caught that film on Saturday. This number also keeps it course for a 375 crore nett plus number lifetime but the test for thsi will be from Monday as we start the pre eid week. KGF 2 is on its way to becoming the biggest BLOCKBUSTER of 2022

I am doing a Heropanti 2, I have also done No Land’s Man. So when people question my decision of doing Heropanti 2, then I’d request them to watch Land’s Man. This has always happened to me. When I did Kick, I had other films going to festivals around the world. Films like Raman Raghav, Manto, how many people actually watched it in cinema? Today they watch it on OTT is a different thing, they are appreciating it, but when it released in theatres, only a certain type of audience saw it. The majority didn’t go. It pains me, but also I am happy that thanks to the industry, I have got an opportunity to play such varied roles in different genre of films. I have been offered so many different kind of roles — a millionaire, a billionaire in commercial films, and at the same time I am being offered an artistic film as well. What else do I need as an actor?

  70. The opening day numbers of small and medium budget films post the pandemic paint a gloomy picture. The Kashmir Files has been left out as that is the exception and their were various external factors that pushed the film to a different level.

It can be argued about the content of these films below but irrespective of that and going by results before the pandemic all these films should be getting higher collections. In 2019 there were films Junglee, Thackeray, Jabariya Jodi and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga opening to around the 3 crore nett and surely most of the films released post the pandemic are superior products than these and have more potential but it is not reflected in the opening day collections.

There is actually not much to say and the numbers below tell the story themselves. At the moment it is looking like numbers are very difficult to come by if you cannot penetrate the mass circuits and sadly very few films before the pandemic were able to do this and it is that same content releasing now as the pandemic delayed releases. The next month will also see similar medium budget films hit theatres and it remains to be seen one or two can breakout and get some sort of respectable start if not good. Below are the opening day numbers of the medium to small budget films released post the pandemic.

    Roohi – 2,73,00,000

    Mumbai Saga – 2,64,00,000

    Bunty Aur Babli 2 – 2,50,00,000

    Satyameva Jayate 2 – 2,92,00,000

    Antim – The Final Truth – 4,78,00,000

    Tadap – 3,78,00,000

    Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui – 3,02,00,000

  72. Sunday Update: Jersey Flat – KGF 2 Another Huge Day
    Sunday 24 April 2022 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jersey was flat on Sunday as it picked up 5-5.25 crore nett for a weekend of nearly 14 crore nett. The film has not moved much in mass areas from day one and it was again similar on Sunday which meant no growth for the film. The metros where the film was doing better do not grow much on Sunday anyway.

The film managed to grow 45% on Saturday thanks to good growth in metros so that gives some hope that maybe it can do something but with Sunday being flat its is now pretty much impossible for Monday to hold anywhere close to Friday levels.

KGF 2 continues to dominate the box office with Sunday likely to be in the 22-23 crore nett region which will give the film a huge second weekend of 51-52 crore nett. This will take the business of the film to around 314 crore nett after its second weekend.

The second weekend business of the film is similar to RRR (hindi) and only behind The Kashmir Files this year which had a near all time record second weekend. The film created history today as it became the first film to cross 10 crore nett in Odisha. It is the first lifetime circuit record for the film and there maybe a couple more to come.

  77. KGF Chapter 2 has emerged a hit as per the trade pundits. The film has performed exceedingly well in the first week all over. But the second weekend sees a huge drop. KGF 2 is maintaining superb collections in the Hindi belt, but the pace has come down drastically elsewhere. The Telugu states have also witnessed a sharp decline in the collections. The film performed like a big star hero film in AP-TG in the first week, but after the initial euphoria died down, the collections fizzled out. The trade pundits say that the film will eventually achieve break-even, but the blockbuster tag in Telugu will be a distant dream. The trend is very poor at the U.S. box office as well where there is proper tracking for collections. Many in the trade feel that the film had no proper story and it lacked the novelty of the first part, which is why the collections have seen a downward trend. Hombale films posted a picture on Twitter where the producer, hero Yash, and director Prashant Neel are seen celebrating the success of KGF Chapter 2 by cutting a cake. They have captioned the pic saying, “It’s just the beginning.” Are they hinting towards a new project or KGF Chapter 3? Your guess is as good as ours.

And they have to be an allrounder whether they want it or not. Good in sports, good in academics, peer pressure etc. This is why there are so many dropouts from poor families. To make one person shine bright, the system sacrifices hundreds. Parents spend insane amounts on tuitions.

    • South heroism is same as 70s bollywood heroism which went far ahead in 80s and almost bought Bollywood down until late 80s and 90s revived the interest back in movies and changed tastes. Folks who are jumping with joy calling that Indian cinema is not catering B,C centers but those were the same movies which made Bollywood laughing stock. South has not matured and continuing the 80s formula but with latest technology and presentation and suddenly folks are crying why Bollywood is not doing the same. Coz we already did those and don’t connect with the movies as such and prefer little bit logic and not 1 person fighting 100 folks kinda action. I don’t want to see illogical movies back again in Bollywood. Yes some masala fare like AB’s Agneepath is welcome change but not his Mard kinds movies.

      • Rajamouli is a one of a kind who caters to A, B and C centers entirely and all audiences. KGF is a direct tribute to Agneepath and Deewaar. No one wants Mard and Tohfa kind of cinema back but Bollywood cannot afford to get stuck in a rut where half the films are Gehraiyaa’s and Chandigarh kare Aashiqui’s. Bollywood needs a lot more of Hirani’s and Bhansali’s or the likes of Chopra, Sippy, Mehra and Ghai in order to sustain the commercial aspect of films.

        • That’s the issue that once you have huge commercial blockbuster you’ll have 10 subpar copy cats and cringeworthy commercial movies in the name of masala which Wil kill the value of the original. SMJ2 being prime example. We do have few film makers but they make movies sparsely and you end up having only Rohit Shetty who makes movies at regular pace. I think only Yashraj has been trying to make big screen spectacles in recent years and even now have Prithviraj, Pathan, Tiger 3, Shamshera etc but you still need subhash ghai for today’s time who saved the 80s when everyone else was making crap.

Same appears with Radhey Shyam. You need to have little brain to retain that stardom as well. Some good projects falling into his kitty like Adipurush and Project K with Deepika, AB is his luck and not his brain. I think Salaar is also gonna be good for him.

    • Nawazuddin is forgetting one simple fact that Hindi movies are not regional. It’s just being made in Mumbai but then regional language of Mumbai is Marathi and you’ll see the same in Marathi industry where everyone speaks in Marathi. Similarly if you go to Kolkatta, it’ll be Bengali all over the film set. Hindi on the other hand is exception as majority of technicians, crew comes from all over the country to make a Hindi movie, so the common language ends up being English in majority of production houses. If you take cinematographers like Ravi K Chandran, Santos Sivan, V Manikandan or choreographers like Prabhu Deva or even actors then they all need to speak a common language. I wonder what did SSR speak with Alia & Ajay Devgn while making RRR? Does that make him less honest about his intention or craft. I don’t think so. Yes, there are many film makers who speak English but gets the Mumbai culture. For example, Hrithik Roshan being prominent star of Bollywood don’t give interviews in Hindi as he’s not comfortable as English. I do understand folks like Farhan, Zoya Akhtar or even Reem Kagti who speak in English but I don’t think it matters for their movies or even where Nawaz was there like Talaash, Reema did great job.

Folks are taking this point beyond his intention, I don’t think you can enforce Hindi anywhere forcibly.

      • He’s perhaps referring to the regular debate of multiplex vs universal cinema in Bollywood now wherein majority film makers are more inspired by western narratives and techniques than Bollywood’s own glorious legacy of the 60s and 70s. Only the likes of Shoojit and Sriram have consistently delivered with this west inspired brand of film making. The likes of Motwane, Kagti and Raj-Dk have either faded or gone the ott way. Even a Vikas Bahl had to reinvent himself with masala props in Super 30 to sustain.

      • The way you speak Hindi also varies with region; Hindi In Maharastra is different than Hyderabad or in Delhi. People are different. But the larger point is if film maker/writer doesn’t know the language; would he/she be able to show story authentically? Is it necessary?

Musk has been vocal about his intention to make Twitter a haven for freedom of expression, and has derided content-moderation decisions the platform has made in the past. That has led to speculation that a Musk-owned Twitter might allow more offensive or dangerous content to proliferate on the site.

On Monday, Agrawal acknowledged that will be Musk’s choice, saying the company makes decisions for the health of the public conversation every day, according to one person on the call. Once the deal closes, he told workers, he doesn’t know which direction the platform will go.

The drop on the second Monday is just 30% plus and it is on course for a second week total of 75 crore nett plus. The second week of KGF 2 (hindi) is very similar to the second week of RRR (hindi)

So the film is looking at a total of 335-340 crore nett after two weeks which will mean that the 400 crore nett mark will be tough to reach due to big releases over the next few weeks be it Heropanti 2, Runway34 and Dr Strange. The last one named looking a sure shot HIT due to the advances picked up already.

The pre Eid period has not affected the film much as the drop on Monday is pretty much normal for a second Monday for an accepted film though as Eid gets closer it could see drops in Muslim dominated centres. The collections of KGF 2 till date are as follows.

    TOTAL – 3,22,25,00,000 apprx

But when it comes to footfalls, RRR and KGF 2 are not even remotely close to the mighty Baahubali 2. Of the limited data that could be sourced, in North India, KGF 2 has 1.75 crore footfalls and RRR has 1.6 crore footfalls. As for Baahubali 2, the film had registered a whopping 5.1 crore footfalls which is almost 2.5X that of RRR and KGF 2’s. While RRR and KGF 2 could benefit from the ticket price hike advantage, Baahubali 2 had the mass pull thanks to the “Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali” hook point in the first part. To put that into perspective, here is a brief look into the footfalls of straight Hindi films. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 3.2 crores, Dangal – 3.1 crores. This also shows the kind of patronage Baahubali 2 got in the Northern belt. As for the box office stats, RRR and KGF 2 collected Rs 250+ crores and Rs 321 crores nett till now. Baahubali 2 had collected a sensational Rs 510 crores nett.

After the record-breaking success of the sequel to KGF: Chapter 2, the sequel to Pushpa: The Rise has stopped short in its tracks.

The news from Hyderabad is that Pushpa 2, which was being shot at breakneck speed for an early release, has been halted on Director Sukumar’s request.

“Pushpa 2 was planned on a much bigger scale than the first part. When the first part succeeded beyond all expectations, the budget was increased and the action sequences were improved. But now, with KGF: Chapter 2 breaking all records, Sukumar wants to up the ante,” says a source.

It is likely that leading man Allu Arjun will begin shooting for another film while Pushpa 2 undergoes scriptural and visual upscaling.

  101. Jersey Box Office Estimate Day 5: Faces rejection BIG time after further crash; collects Rs. 1.36 crores
By Bollywood Hungama News Network- Apr 26, 2022 – 10:41 PM IST
The Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey has crashed further on Tuesday as the collections went down by 15 percent on Tuesday as compared to Monday. According to early estimates, the movie has collected in the range of Rs. 1.36 to 1.45 crores on Tuesday to take the five day total collection to Rs. 17.81 crores.

The movie will now fold up around Rs. 20 crore mark and is a major flop at the box office. The lifetime collections of Jersey would be similar to the lifetime collections of Rangoon [Rs. 20.68 cr.] and Chance Pe Dance [Rs. 20.62 cr.]. Also Jersey’s lifetime collections is the same as the Day 1 earnings of Shahid Kapoor’s last film, Kabir Singh [Rs. 20.21 cr]. The film will be discontinued from major properties this Friday to be replaced by Heropanti 2 and Runway 34.

Shahid Kapoor has seen two extremes in his last two releases – the biggest blockbuster in Kabir Singh and one of the biggest theatrical flops with Jersey. It would be interesting to see his move from hereon on the feature film front.

The utter collapse of these films is indeed shocking. 83 among these were most loved for sure. But still did 50% of pre pandemic business. Others ended with 30% of so. Covid surely changed the preferences.

These were not bad movies…but lacked scale. Suddenly the days of 8-10 cr opening, 35 cr weekend and 100 cr+ nett for most of these movies are gone.

      Another factor-
Most of them had their releases after 2 years and certainly looked jaded.

Scale, scale, scale….show it and audience would come.

The only exception is the kashmir files. But for its genre, it had the biggest scale. Still ranks as my best film of the decade.

They needed their movies, done at a certain cost to do over 100 cr. Their movies usually dont have scale and high production value. Off late, even their film’s music sucks. It’s a course correction time. There are still few leftovers of covid delays and mayhem would continue for few more months.

Star’s fee have to come down or go outcome based. Bollywood listen. Act. Renew.

Cinemas will be big scale movie experiences, at least for sometime now. This shouldn’t have been surprise that who’s from the industry. OTT platform is here to stay and just by the trailer one can decide if this is an OTT movie or big screen movie. Especially if the movie premieres on OTT in 4 weeks, is hard to spend money and justify the expense. For some, it’s not about money but convenience..I would rather watch such smaller movies like Dasvi, Jersey late night on big screen when I feel like, instead of wasting so much time and make a trip to cinemas. There was a time I used to watch every movie in cinemas as it usually took around 3-4 months for satellite premiere or DVD release and that’s the only option. If they announce in 4 weeks you’ll have it on OTT, many, like me, will drop out easily.

        • Agreed but that cannot bring down a Mission Mangal or a Kabir Singh from 200 to 20. There’s obviously huge pent up demand for tentpoles that has led to back to back releases for RRR and KGF2. Kashmir Files turned out to be the dark horse. Its not always that films like Gangubai, Kashmir Files, RRR and Kgf 2 release within 45 days. Let things stabilize. OTT was present in 2018-19 too yet the likes of Stree, Badhaai Ho, Good News etc did excellent business. There might be a 30-50% impact on such films post pandemic but a 90% impact is obviously temporary.

          Like

        • “OTT was present in 2018-19..”
This 4 weeks contract on OTT started after the pandemic, Pushpa released on Amazon Prime after 17 days of release. Now it’s either 4 weeks or 8 weeks for big movies. Earlier it was coming on its own sweet time after 3-4 months. Also more movies releasing directly on OTT which didn’t happen earlier too, which spoilt the public.

          Like

        • But I agree with the point that it’s too many big movies impacting. If there’s no movies released for 2 months and then you release a movie like Jersey or similar, folks will throng to cinemas just to watch it. Timing is important but if you have busy calendar, which looks like for sometime, smaller movies will take huge beating in theatrical business.

The only realistic solution to the language issue in India is a 2 language formula with the regional state/district language being the primary language and ENGLISH being the mandatory second language across the whole of India. All this vile about English being a firangi language by the Sangh and its supporters is completely irrational. India cannot run away from its colonial past and nor can we live in denial that English is the 2nd most popular language in the country after Hindi.
