  1. OMG2 moves to OTT. I think Apart from BMCM every movie of his will go to OTT

    • I thought OMG2 was one of his safer projects and Akshay will have guest/supporting role and not blamed much if it flops but get lot of goodwill of it becomes success like part 1.

      • OMG would have never got a release in these times. It got a release because the times were different. Now OMG2 is not a safe project anymore specially if it is in same mould and if its not in same mould audience will get cheated.
If you are a spokesperson for a certain kind of politics (whether right or wrong is a moot point ) then the chaff gets grinded with the rice too from time to time. You cant play lord shiva now and get away with it easily just like you could get away then playing Krishna.

        • The topic is gender equality and sex education and shouldn’t be as controversial as godmenol of part 1. But the movie doing well is unlikely, so going to OTT. Other movie is Suriya’s OTT movie remake is ready and again going to OTT is funny. Other movies are Capsule Gill and Shivaji in Marathi. They only BMCM.

The new movies signed by Akshay are HP3 and Skyforce, another movie based on air force after Fighter and on the lines of Maverick.

No matter what one says about Akshay Kumar, he is a genuine guy with a strong moral core. He arm twisted YRF into reporting only genuine collections of Samrat Prithviraj even when it turned out to be a resounding flop. Needless to say, YRF threw their ethics out of the window when SRK entered the production with Pathaan. Call it ridiculous, but I think Adi Chopra intentionally produced a flop in Prithviraj and reported a hit in Pathaan to show that SRK is bigger than Akshay.

But you can only fool the trade and media and public for so long. Ultimately the timing of the OTT release spills the beans.

I’ve done some mind boggling calculation to derive the lifetime collections of Pathaan.

Prithviraj OTT release date: 28 days after its theatrical release
Pathaan OTT release: 56 days after its theatrical release
    Prithviraj’s lifetime collections: 68 crores
    Hence, Pathaan’s ACTUAL lifetime collections = 68 * 2 = 136 crores.

YRF have overreported the film by a minimum of 280 crores by buying all these tickets by freezing their pocket money funds to Uday Chopra to be able to afford this.

And even that is double the lifetime’s collections of Pathaan.

  3. TJMM plugging away at lower level.

The 8-day total now stands between 87.71-88.01 crores.

Not sure how Sazam 1 did but I assume kids (along with parents) will go for part 2 taking away audience from TJMM.

I think 125 Cr is still possible.

Everyone assumed it’s front loaded but it proved all wrong with such long legs and even 6th week ended up being highest than huge blockbusters like Baahubali 2 and others. So, movie opens biggest and still trends the longest and yet it is similar to just another hit of pre-pandemic. Kuch bhi!!

Agree with everything she said. Especially about men who are constantly under pressure to financially deliver and take on responsibilities right after they complete education. The rat race is real and can easily break one under pressure.

The marriage market certainly doesn’t help. While dowry is a justifiably evil practice, I have seen a lot of women ‘hunting’ for IIT/IIM graduates even on Tinder! NRIs are certainly at the top of the heap for potential brides. I’m sure Z and An Jo and Naveen and Rocky and munna were hot property before marriage with too many rishtas coming their way.

      • Tony,

Glad you asked this question. I was a Super Hot Property but I had somewhat of an unpleasant experience with this.

This is going back to 90s and my 2nd trip to India since migrating to USA early 80s.

So there was a lineup of looking at about 6 to 8 girls daily for few days. It was exhausting with heat and travel. India (or should I say some of the places in Gujarat) in 90s was not as well as it’s today in terms of facility and convenience. Overall I must have looked at atleast 50 girls and with so many families like throwing their girls at me. I really got annoyed (almost depressed) when a 15 or 16 year old girl was shown. I understood that for families this is a golden opportunity to have their daughter go to a better place and have a better life as well as make it better for other family member down the road but I was just so taken back by it that I told my uncle I didn’t want to see anymore girls and went back to USA unmarried. Mentally I just couldn’t take it when this very young girl was shown to me.

Then next year I had warned my uncle, no minor. Luckily I had already seen a girls pic before going 2nd time and was set on it and that was the only one I looked at and married.

Some of my Patel friends say that there were parents waiting at the airport with 25 lacs in briefcase at the airport for them to marry their daughter, like make a deal at the airport. 25 lacs was big amount back in 90s. I have even heard stories of 50 and 75 lacs.

Today the craze is not there but even today the not so well to do families, and there are millions and millions of them in India who will marry off their daughter/son to USA even today (of course the kids have a say in it now more then they did back in the days).

Is that a norm in Gujarati families to line up their girls for NRIs like that? I’ve heard this from some other Gujarati men too.

In North India (especially baniyas), the marriage is almost like a business transaction and it’s sickening to see the dowry car (displayed at the very entry to the mandap) being brandished as if it’s something to be proud of.

But while thanks to awareness the number of families demanding have come down the reverse is happening for women. You don’t stand a chance with the women if you aren’t residing in a first world country outside India or have your own house/earn below 2 lakhs in the city

No, I had heard this for few Patel families, not all Gujaratis. And this was back in the days, I assume it’s not the case anymore.

It’s sad but it’s the truth. If life was all that great in india back then, no one would parade their daughter/son to get them married to some unknown person and send them away thousands of miles.

Today, india is thriving but there are still millions and millions of people who are poor/very poor with no help from government so going aboard is still a dream of millions.

You should se the poor in USA. They eat better food then we do due to them getting food stamps (now it’s credit card where government deposits money into their account), apartment money, free medical and so many other free stuff from government.

Here in US, you do everything from driving own car, cleaning utensils, laundry, cleaning house (you can pay someone to do that) and many chores where you can easily employ someone in India to do the job. The key is access to money. If India growth trajectory is good for next 15-20 years, I think people going out for work, would become less.

Times are changing. SRK was considered too old to be playing the romantic guy in KKHH

By mohabbatein he moved on to counselling college students on love and by MHN (before he turned 40), he had a running joke in the film about his age .

Ranbir’s looks are in his favour. He is handsome and women won’t mind him playing the lead in a romcom for some time more.

        • How come these women dont show up in theaters for Ranbir’s films? His fans may have at max 10 films or so to talk about in his entire career so far, but they are mostly average fares or semi-hits at best. Even Brahmastra and now TJMM are not clean hits even with inflated collections. How many clean hits have this guy delivered? 3-4 at the max.
So what kind of fans does he have when he cant fill bums in theaters? I have always maintained Ranbir is a media hyped star and the hype is mainly because of his surname.

        • SRK has ordinary looks tbh. Yet it the body language, arm spreading shenanigans, dimples & dialogue delivery that stole feminine hearts. Looks alone cannot do the trick. They need to be complemented by a certain gesture or dialogue that makes you endearing on screen (think Rajesh Khanna to Salman in MPK, Srk etc). I do not know whether its personal turmoil or the inability to handle family life etc, but this chap seems completely out of sorts nowadays, almost bordering on cardboard. Compare these 2 and you’d know what I mean!

        • But isnt a ‘star’ supposed to fill bums in theaters despite poor choice of films? Isnt that what salman has been doing again and again over last 35 years? Srk’s female fan followers used to get to the theaters dragging their bfs and family along to fill seats. Call it nautanki or whatever, but srk delivered 10+ clean hits in the romance genre based on that only. Females may say ‘ oh ranbir is choo cute’. But they are not that excited to watch his films. So thats not really a fan following in my opinion. Same goes for Kartik Aryan, whose hype is a lot less since he isnt a Kapoor. But these guys hardly have the fan following of Khanna or SRK. One can argue that theater going audience has dwindled over the years. But TJMM not getting even 1 cr footfalls is a disappointment for a so-called romcom star.

They seemed to have better opinion of Ranbir, but wont be going to the theaters to watch TJMM. Thats the difference between a star and a wannabe. One can have a certain amt of likability, but unless he can fill seats in theaters he isnt really a star. The last star that bollywood produced remains Hrithik, although Ranbir may be a better actor.

Blame it on the times. It’s the era of big event or action films. How much did LSC or the last few Akshay starrers earn? Is Aamir not a big star?
at least TJMM has managed to gross 80+ crores and the first week isn’t over. Luv Ranjan’s highest grosser is Sonu ke titu and that just about did 100 crores.
Minus Ranbir, the film wouldn’t have attracted any traction at all.

          Like

        • Ranbir does not have any ‘historical’ data that he can fill bums in theaters. Barring 2-3 hits all his movies have been average to semi-hits. He never had a string of hits even before BV or any other disasters. Comparing a guy like Ranbir to established stars is a joke. As for ‘times’ its yet another excuse. What happened with the visual spectacle called Brahmastra? Why cudnt it do Hit business at all? As for TJMM, had Luv done this film with Kartik it wud still have done 100-120 cr in the end. Ranbir has added zero traction to Luv’s brand. Quite unfortunate.

As for Akshay and Aamir – both have now hit record lows in their career. One has become a OTT star and the other cant decide what to do next. Such has been their downfall. But they have a record of filling bums in theaters previously, again and again – which something like a media hyped ‘star’ does not have.

          Like

        • Most stars and superstars are genre based (unless they carve a niche beyond their home genre like Dilip Kumar or AB or are content based stars like Raj Kapoor or Aamir). Ranbir started off trying to emulate SRKs success in rom-coms but somewhere down the line decided to try and emulate the content based stardom of his grandad (without realizing Raj Kapoor was a genius film maker) and now is trying to get back to domestic domain even though he’s missed the bus. Brahmastra was more romance than SciFi yet had lower footfalls than Akshay’s pet genre in Sooryavanshi despite Sooryavanshi running at 50% occupancy. Its alright to have flops in experimental genres that aren’t your identity (like Prithviraj, Zero, Vikram Vedha or Runway 34) but if you cannot get enough appreciation for your own cup of tea, there’s something going seriously wrong or lethargic with your on screen acts.

The best thing about the IMS is the ease of approach and availability. The best thing about t he AMS is the presence of Doctors and nurses and other professionals who are damn good. [Of course, you know how many of them are Indians; and all my doctors and specialists in the US are Indians.] The WORST thing is the mafia: The triangle between the hospitals/insurance companies/and the White House is horrific; it will put to shame Agneepath’s ‘biziness’ or SRK’s ‘Dhandhe se bada koi Dharam nahi hota.’

You should see the documentary by Moore:

This hipster hypefest is an adventure in alternative existences and multiverse realities from writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – the “Daniels” – who in 2016 gave us the Jonzeian comedy Swiss Army Man. Everything Everywhere All at Once has been critically swooned over in the US and pretty much everywhere else, so it’s disconcerting to find it frantically hyperactive and self-admiring and yet strangely laborious, dull and overdetermined, never letting up for a single second to let us care about, or indeed believe in, any of its characters.

Not for everyone, I agree. It’s insanely over the top and an assault on the senses. You can either diss it as one of the most ridiculous films ever or be blown away by its sheer originality and ripe imagination of the artists. To actually get the idea stemming from an overactive brain executed exactly how you wanted is in itself a major, major success. To make a film like this back home is not just risky: it’s suicidal, considering viewers feed on what they want to be fed and have set notions on what entertainment is and should be.

I had a ball watching this in theatre. It has pushed the boundaries for sure

    • It was an average fare even by the standards of its time of release. It took a bumper initial but could not carry on much.

How i wish the TG/FI scans were available from those times. Its a shame that Taran/Komal has made no attempts to bring those verdicts of TG/FI online till now. FI has been retroactively posting FI verdicts once a year, but they started with 1993. Whereas FI has been around from early seventies.

And all the movies that Aamir is currently producing should go for direct OTT release. Else they will all be theatrical flops. It is going to be really difficult for any content based star/superstar to survive in current times. Be it Ayushmann or Aamir.

The dad’s role was soul and finding dad him in the climax of his story really gave a great feeling by the end of the movie. It has some slow moments but overall brave effort but should have made the movie with tighter script and shot in one go of 1 year instead spreading 3-4 years.

    • Seriously doubt it. Sid Anand is in contract to direct Prabhas for a film with Mythri Movie Makers next after Fighter. That film may have Hrithik in a parallel lead role (as rumoured) and is expected to go on floors by next year and release in 2025. I doubt if Sid Anand will postpone that film and direct War 2 instead for YRF.

I personally think that if Tiger 3 turns out to be as big a hit as expected, then its director Maneesh Sharma may direct War 2 and Sid Anand may comeback to Spyverse to direct Pathaan vs Tiger film after he has done Prabhas film.

Anyways, Hrithik now has a formidable line-up with Fighter, War 2, Krrish 4 and perhaps Sid’s next film with Prabhas. How quickly these films get completed for release is the question. It will be over next 4-5 years I believe.

In the same year (1978), MKS was an ATBB (10+ cr gross), Trishul was a Blockbuster (7+ cr gross) and Don was a Superhit (6+ cr gross).

        • Kasme Vaade was Hit as well. He had 4 among the top 5 of the year. Trishul would be an All Time by today’s liberal yardstick where every random 2 Cr footfall grosser is a BB and anything above 3 Cr admits gets an All Time tag regardless of distribution costs.

4 successful films in 2005 at the age of 63. Including a Semi Hit from a dark brooding half English drama film like Black with zilch commercial value. This at a time when well received content films with reigning superstars like Swades were flopping right on day 1. Ranbir on his debut and HR at his peak 30s tried the same genre with Bhansali and both films bombed. 11 years later he went one step ahead and delivered a clean HIT in an unconventional courtroom thriller like Pink with no known director or faces apart from AB. Its quite amusing when folks question his achievements post his 50s.

Pardes was an overflow while Ram Jaane and Yes Boss were commission as per original data. Funny how BOI calls Pardes a Super Hit now and the other 2 as legit Hits. Its a verdict that’d surprise the producers of Ram Jaane themselves.

Year (# of Hits) – Details

1973 (3) – Zanjeer (Blockbuster), Abhimaan (Hit), Namak Haram (Hit)
1974 (3) – Benaam (Hit), Roti Kapada Makaan (Blockbuster), Majboor (Hit) [Note: Kasauti was Average]
1975 (3) – Deewar (Blockbuster), Chupke Chupke (Hit), Sholay (ATBB) [Note: Mili was Average]
1976 (4) – Kabhi Kabhie (Superhit), Hera Pheri (Superhit), Adalaat (Hit), Do Anjaane (Semi-Hit)
1977 (3) – Amar Akbar Abthony (ATBB), Khoon Pasina (Superhit), Parvarish (Blockbuater)
1978 (6) – Muqaddar Ka Sikander (ATBB), Trishul (Blockbuster), Don (Superhit), Kasme Vaade (Superhit), Besharam (Semi-Hit), Ganga Ki Saugandh (Semi-Hit)
1979 (3) – Suhaag (ATBB), Mr Natwarlal (Hit), Kala Pathar (Semi-Hit) [Note: The Great Gambler, Jurmana & Manzil were Averages]

If we overlook the 4 semi-hits, even then he delivered 21 ‘clean hits’ in 7 years with an average of 3 hits in a year!

1997 (2) – Dil Toh Pagal Hai (Superhit), Pardes (Semi-Hit) [Note: Yes Boss & Koyla were Averages]
1998 (1) – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (ATBB)
      1999 (0) – [Note: Baadshah was Average]
