  1. If the trade can see the positive results of lower admission rates on the box-office, why don’t producers unite and reduce ticket prices?

    – Unite? Multiplex chains decide ticket pricing, not the producers. It is not so easy to reduce admission rates. PVR-Inox, Cinepolis and several others don’t find it worth their while to reduce admission rates as, according to them, their overheads are way too high to permit permanent reduction of admission rates. But yes, it is likely that the multiplex chains might now see reason in reducing the rates for small and medium star-cast films. Warning: if the low rates become a regular feature, footfalls in multiplexes and cinemas may not always be high. Today’s (May 31) brisk ticket sales may also be because it is a one-off price reduction scheme.

  2. A hat-trick or hat trick is the achievement of a generally positive feat three times in a match, or another achievement based on the number three.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat-trick

A traitor is a person who commits treason. And hopefully our worthless Bollywood can make a few more films portraying traitors being hanged in order to wake up the hat trick tricksters to take action.

        • All I know is that couch potatoes save their hard earned money and a lot of time/effort that is wasted on watching mediocre films in theaters.

          Like

        • Not my problem if couch potatoes have no intent of knowing how to have the theatrical experience for less than a 100 bucks or use credit card brownie points, especially in an era when theatres & TV/web are competing on whose more useless. No wonder most movie/TV stars find the need to exhibit their pointless socio-political opinions to stay relevant.

        • You need a lot of free time to actually pay attention to socio-economic commentary of stars! LOL

For me Its a matter of saving time that I don’t go that much to theaters anymore to watch mostly mediocre films. And on OTT one can fast fwd boring bits to save a lot of precious time.

OTT is here to stay while theaters will shut down more and more in future.

        • Yes as per 2020 predictions there were “supposed” to be precisely 2020 screens left all over the world by now and as per 2018 IPL commentators, test cricket “should” have been in the crematoriums by now while Netflix “should” have been the globe’s largest conglomerate by now as opposed to making losses of over $18 B in a single fiscal year. But then as per a certain few joining hands with donkeys to form an alliance of pony’s should also have been good enough to stop a political juggernaut 🤣

        • That is a meaningless comparison – BJP alone will get 350 seats this time as per many exit polls.

Anyways, even after the merger of INOX and PVR, they are shutting down as many multiplexes (not single screens) in 2024 that they did in 2023!

As for the box-office, we know what is happening out there. Let us not bring up the so-called 500 cr grossers of 2022 which were actually frauds of the highest order, with corporate booking scams running into hundreds of crores.

Even Dunki had corporate bookings of 30 cr last year, lets forget the likes of Pathaan, Jawaan and Salaar.

Anyways, Bollywood box office is a dead story already.

It further said, ”We are firmly on track to open a total of 160-170 new screens in FY24, and will fund this growth through internal accruals.”

bo ups & downs are part of the game. Indian cinemas hv withstood far worse in the past including disaster FYs like 2002 & 2021-22.

    My little note on Panchayat:

The charm of the first two seasons might have rubbed off on the third, but Panchayat Season 3 has now taken up unchartered territory. The focus is now on the cat-and-mouse game between a local MLA and the Phulera gang.

What intrigued me about the first season was the local, slice-of-life struggles and the ‘a-day-in-the-life-of-a-village-secretary’ format, each episode a supremely entertaining anecdote. This has now turned into a political game and not the series I fell in love with.

The characters and actors still propel it forward. Some parts work well, like the facade around the PM Awas Yojna and the fiasco involving the pigeon, and the woman playing the daadi is fun to watch. But the writers now seem to have run out of ideas. How I wish this had steered clear of going the Mirzapur way.

  5. Considering the fact that Kalki 2898 AD is an event film, and it’ll enjoy the benefit of Prabhas’ crazy stardom, the biggie is expected to do monstrous business through advance booking itself. Speaking about the highest opening day pre-sales at the Indian box office in the post-pandemic era, Yash’s KGF Chapter 2 is at the top with 80 crores gross.

Meanwhile, after KGF Chapter 2, RRR is at the second spot in terms of day 1 advance booking in the post-COVID era, with 59 crores gross. Salaar is in the third position with 49 crores gross.

    • Even after 4 consecutive flops/underperformers, if Prabhas can still get 50 cr gross advance for Kalki 2898 AD, then his reported renumeration of 100+ cr per movie may actually make some sense.

      Lets see.

Both the “OTT” type urban films Srikanth & Mr & Mrs Mahi doing well for their cost. Rajkumar Rao is making the most of this dull phase and delivering at higher levels than Iconic star Kumar & Superstar Shroff.

    • They are doing well only ‘relatively’. With 50 cr investment on each of these two films, both will be average fares at box-office with ~50 cr lifetime total.

Iranian and Malayalam cinema are sheer joy to watch.

Also, korean dramas, all of them riveting. Watching Flower of Evil: nail biting suspense series.

Finished recently with Asgar Farhadi’s Salesman: starts off as slow and subtle drama, with the lead couple’s theatrical acts complementing the turmoil they face in their personal lives. Ends up as highly unsettling, despite little to no violence. It’s an extraordinary feat.

I wanted to be floored by and love each frame. I’d done so had it released 20 years earlier. Everything’s technically right: the details are spot on, the frames rich, the editing sharp, the finale crowdpleasing. I’m sure it was a delight in theatres. But it pans out exactly as expected: the Chak-de-like struggles with the federation, the standard villains mocking the team’s failure (for no apparent reason here, except an inflated ego), the wins, the losses, the personal struggles, the return, and the thumping win that it all leads up to. And of course, the more-than-necessary focus on the coach than any of the players.

Devgan is a sincere actor and a fine performer. But hardly makes any effort to reivnent or surprise his viewers. He does well here, but his is the same old persona of the regular strong and silent, expressing-through-the-eyes, no-nonsense protagonist. It’s like Vijay Salgaonkar decided to move to Bengal and change his career to escape the drudgery of Goan life. Or Bholaa was given a second chance to mend his criminal ways and become a coach. He’s not uninhibited, he does not surrender. He is performing for the camera and looking good with those expressions, probably giving a nod at the end of each scene to his director: “now, wasn’t I amazing?”

Very much watchable, and pretty sure it was loved by everyone who saw it, including itself. It’s like it decided to give itself a pat on the back all through the scenes.

I think this issue has arisen because malayalam cinema has caught the attention of several film stars and cinephiles across the country this year. Many films were big hits, out of which Aavesham, Manjummel Boys, and Brahmayugam didn’t feature any female character. At the same time, Premalu had a very well written lead female character, representative of many young and independent corporate women. But 2024 has been an exception because there are otherwise several films with women in strong roles having a major impact in how the film turns out: Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, The Great Indian Kitchen, Sara’s, Joji, Nayattu, Sara’s, Helen, 22 Female Kottayam, C U Soon, Bangalore Days, Nayattu, Uyare. The list goes on.

(still there are many I am missing out on)

  15. Watched BMCM. I liked it quite a bit – Full entertainment. Its far from being unintentionally funny. Quite baffled that it was a box office disaster. Should easily have been Akshay’s biggest blockbuster yet.

Will put it in the same category as TOH – Decent blockbuster films that was surprisingly rejected completely at the box office.

  20. Watched about 15 to 20 minutes of BMCM last night, had to turn it off as it was so boring.

I can see why it was rejected outright.

Movies like BMCM shows how superior Pathaan was in every department and why Pathaan is the most successful film in it’s genre. The problem with BMCM is that nothing really works. Even the action which was talked so much about before it’s release, was something out of the movies made like 30 years ago.

  23. This August 2015, we may be witnessing another couple of wash outs just like it was the case with LSC/RB. Very underwhelming releases this year, with KKM and Vedaa looking like upcoming disasters.

John Abraham has never been a BO star and Vedaa will only be another flop from him, but Akshay Kumar must smell the coffee and reinvent himself. He must go for bigger and less volume. Those small multiple releases won’t be doing him any good. I can understand him signing BMCM, Welcome, Housefull or Hera Pheri sequels as they are big projects. The hype of the previous films certainly help. OMG did work as a sequel. But small films like Khel Khel Mein are not going to do it on their own anymore.
