Gulaal:my take
With gulal kashyap enters into the arena of political set up targetting youth on the backdrop of corruption ,education ,anger and disgust (represented in form of separatism) but one thing soul of gulal lacks that is script though characterisation and performances are on mark.
Movie revolves around two d’s ( another one after dev d)dillip singh and Dukey Bana.
While bana represents the strong willed guy who is brought up on revolutionary ideas who beleives in pride(portrayed by k.k) and beleives only in his ideology and its imposition dillip is just the opposite(and ironically he is a student of law.
On its backdrop kashyap took a dig on cuel ragging still rampant in various colleges and on student politics where money and power are being misused frequently.
With character of Ransa(dillip’s roommate portrayed superbly by abhimanyu singh) he devotes a modern independent youth who hardly carries any baggage of past customs and beliefs and want to persue politics for development .One feels there should have been more exposure to his character which is interrupted shortly thanks to his illegal brother(karan) who kills him to promote his sister(kiran) a pattern which is visible in indian politics where siblings from political dynasties are fighting nasty battle in election among themselves. What follows is the obsession of money and power and the fight for it and its dilip who is being used always first by bana and then in form of love by kiran(masterminded by karan).
Various sub characters in form of Jadwal(typical college bully),anuja(supermodel jesse randhawa who has a liking for dillip) ,bhatti and prithvi singh ( bana’s trustee portrayed with ease by deepak debopriyal and his mad brother by prithvi singh)
Its the abhimanyu, deepak and and prithvy who ends up being show stealer and provides superb support and moments to this film.
There are various mismatch of tribute ………………..kashyap shows the relation between bana and his wife on the backdrop of sahib biwi aur gulam (with addition to mahi gill who portrays the another women)and in climax with breakdown of dillip mentally and his furstration with another gurudutt’s classical song from pyasa(yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye). There is a modern take of sarfaroshi ki tamanna hai as well as some really popular folk rajasthani song as well as the scarcasm on it on how u.s has occupied iraq and destroyed afghanistan.Room 69 where both ransa and dillip stayed and his backdrop is again a tribute to chunking express as well as hanging of ransa in street(ala nazabdulla in afghanistan)
Though the film does not have a proper script and loses some steam in 2nd half its a must watch thanks to great performamces ironically its the trio(abhimanyu, deepak and prithvi who steals the show) though kk provides the intensity and angerb and dillip the freshness…kashyap direction’s is on mark aided by decent music( some great one liners as well as deep meaning)
rating :7/10)

Another enlightening review….I wasn’t aware that the movie also pays tribute to Chunking Express. Anurag packs his films with a lot of stuff to chew on….
