Tangential note on Fashion

(these views first appeared on NG)

Fashion is much better than I expected it to be. Quite engrossing from beginning to end and also it’s not as stereotypical as I expected it to be based on some of Bhandarkar’s other stuff. Kangana Ranaut is definitely a scene stealer here as some pieces on the film earlier suggested. But Priyanka ultimately has the job of carrying the film and she does this rather well.

Being obsessed with Bombay film history I found a moment in the film rather moving for reasons entirely ‘other’ to the film. There’s a scene where Priyanka Chopra is in a high rise looking out at a massive billboard with her on it. The site is Marine Drive. The way the shot has been set up it more or less mirrors the legendary moment in Deewar when Bachchan looks out of the window after becoming ’successful’ and pictures his past (walking with his mother and brother in a state of destitution on that very road when he first arrives in the city). An index of the distance traveled from the older India of Deewar [not ‘old’ because that India was ‘new’ in the 70s and that movement from the ‘Independence’ generation to the first post-Independence (or post-Partition) one is in many ways what films like Deewar or Trishul are about] to this new 90s and post-90s one of Fashion.

Where Bachchan sees his mother Priyanka Chopra sees herself. A measure perhaps of a greater narcissism (hardly surprising since consumer economies often go hand in hand with such).

By the way there’s a scene here where Bhandarkar also mocks himself. I thought this was a nice move.

  1. Agree with reading of movies. I saw it recently after Ashutosh’s comment at IIFA. And Priyanka deserved all the accolades for this role. Kangana was good but unidirectional role which I think she has mastered it to perfection. All the three ladies carried the movie with elan which is a rarity in male dominated bollywood. Only grouse I have with the movie was Rohit Khanna’s characterization of gay. They could have made similar to Samir Soni’s.

  2. I hated Fashion. It was cliched melodramatic claptrap. Bhandarkar is officially a one note director. Priyanka was way overrated in the role. I felt nothing for her character but irritation and annoyance. And Kangana has made a career playing these roles so nothing new. The gay portrayals and racist tone were offensive to me.

Next up Jail with all the usual jailhouse stereotypes.

  3. Nice note on the Marine Drive moment, but this film I really, deeply disliked. It completely lost any sense of truth for me the second Priyanka realizes the error of her ways upon sleeping with (horror of horrors!) a black man!!!!

  4. Totally agree with Tyler…absolutely pathetic movie!! If Kangana does another such role she might as we commit suicide for real this time!!! The movie was lame, predictable and the dialogues…totally laughable!! As for Priyanka…am still trying to figure out why she deserved best actress…
Madhur Bhandarkar is totally overrated. If one has to compare him with the likes of Vishal Bhardwaraj, Rakesh Mehra, Hirani, Imtiaz Ali, he seems totally amateurish compared to these guys!

  6. Thank goodness I didn’t go to to Regal and opted for Dvd which is still to finish and perhaps never will finish. Thank U Satyam revisiting this and give many of us (Surprisingly) a vent to take it out frustration for this over rated, truly pathetic cliched melodramatic claptrap (Thanks Tyler for that phrase). MB is indeed a one note director and AB put a mirch on wound by calling MB a new age Hrishikesh Mukherjee-that’s great insult to Hrishida and rare stupid utterance from AB.

  7. Here is an excerpts

“Last Saturday, on 21st June, Amitabh Bachchan felicitated Madhur Bhandarkar as the best contemporary film director. In a
ceremony organized by ‘Spandan Art’, Big B presented the title in the form of a Memento to Madhur for winning the National Award
for Best Director for his film Traffic Signal. This is his third National Award after Chandni Bar and Page 3.
Well, if receiving the Memento from the legendary actor wasn’t good enough, there was more to come for the filmmaker who is
busy wrapping Fashion. In front of a packed audience, Big B said that Bhandarkar was the new age Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
“What can I really say about appreciation like this and that too from a person of the stature of Big B”, says Bhandarkar who is still
trying to come to terms with the comment made by Amitabh Bachchan”.

  8. [Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is on cloud nine after scoring a hat-trick with her latest release “Kaminey”.

“Thank you guys (audiences) for your positivity on ‘Kaminey’! And yes… it is a hat-trick… Yay,” elated Priyanka posted on her Twitter page.

The 27-year-old has delivered three hits in a row – first she wowed the audience with her power-packed performance as an ambitious model in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion”, then as a chic girl in Tarun Mansukhani’s “Dostana” and now as a typical Maharashtrian girl in “Kaminey”, a dark thriller by Vishal Bharadwaj.

In her next “What’s Your Rashee”, she will be seen essaying 12 different roles – arguably no other actor has attempted. Priyanka is also busy shooting for Yash Raj Films’ “Pyaar Impossible”, in which she stars opposite Uday Chopra.]
