Sachin joins Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil has approved the Rajya Sabha nomination recommendation for cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and he will now be a Rajya Sabha MP. Sachin Tendulkar accepted the Rajya Sabha nomination proposed by the Congress and became the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

The Home Ministry had recommended four names including those of Tendulkar, Bollywood actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Agha for the Rajya Sabha. The President has also approved the recommendations for Rekha and Agha.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had written a letter to the Home Ministry on the issue. The Congress had offered to nominate Tendulkar under the President’s quota.

The cricketer who just turned 39 on April 24 is yet to retire from international cricket, and is expected to be away on cricket duty through 2013.

The 39-year-old master blaster who has brought many a laurel to the country through his exploits in the game, and Rekha, known for her brilliant and emotional portrayals in Hindi cinema in the 80s, will become members of Parliament under a provision of the Constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the Upper House.

Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service.

57-year-old Rekha was one of the top heroines of the 80s in Hindi films and had won several national awards in her acting career.

Tendulkar’s nomination to Rajya Sabha came as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. He completed the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries in March this year.

Tendulkar along with his wife Anjali met Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi.

Although officially the Congress said that Sonia wanted to meet Tendulkar and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries, but sources say the main agenda was his nomination for the Rajya Sabha.

The move to nominate Tendulkar was welcomed from every quarter of the political spectrum, from the Congress to the BJP.

Reacting to the reports of Sachin Tendulkar’s proposed nomination, BJP leader Najma Heptulla said, “We are very happy that Tendulkar’s name has been proposed for the Rajya Sabha.”

“Tendulkar is a great player, we are proud of him. If he is being nominated, surely he would devote some time to Parliament,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

However, the proposal didn’t go well with people from the cricket fraternity. Cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle said, “I don’t think it is the greatest idea. He doesn’t have the experience of governing or doing social work. People are trying to gain mileage out of Tendulkar.”

Meanwhile, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) welcomed the government’s nomination of Tendulkar as a member of the Rajya Sabha, saying that the iconic batsman deserves such an honour.

BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Prof. Ratnakar Shetty said that the Board was happy with the government’s move. “We (BCCI) are happy that Tendulkar’s services as a sportsperson has been recognised. He’s been a true ambassador for the country and he deserves it,” he said.

In the past, eminent personalities like directors Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar had been the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.

enuf!!! will be politically incorrect and declare that am a bit fed up of sachin being awarded everything–does it really matter to him now..
in this case, it matters more to the particular political party…(to catch him while he is still playing n relevant)

WOuld want sachin to give something BACK to sport in general (not his sport since cricket doesnt need any more help!!)

ps–its surprising why and how nobody talks about saching new hair–is that a hair weave or some new ‘gel;’ treamtent or collagen fillers…
    of,lets not talk about it—hes sachin u know !!!

    10dulkar–are these ‘early’ signs…?

Beforehand, ine must know that this is in no way to belittle a person who i consider one of the most iconic symbols of not only an entire country but a region!

Amidst all the familiar, infact ‘default’ sachin-congratulatory tones coming from anywhere–wasnt really satisfied with this..
This signifies a certain ‘corruption’ of one of the biggest recent icons of his country and couldve done a lot in areas needing his iconic support
But what does he choose to do
Accept a ‘cushy’ job wherein theres neither the ‘vote responsibility’ and nor any ‘duties’
and a job where by the very nature one becomes subservient to a particular political party ‘anointing’ u even without any ‘voting’ process

The path he is choosng for himself became evident on the recent indian teams trip to london
Amidst all the humiliating thrashing by the england team, the biggest ever cricketer was seen spending time making enquiries about how to get ‘tax exemption/concession’on stuff like ferraris and
also making groundwork for his own ‘cricket academies’ and setting the cornerstone for his sons inevitable cricketing career
For ANY other sportsmen, would say–cmon spare him now
but expect better from this man

NO doubt one of his ‘close friends’ has similar things to say–irrespective of jealosy
    “Manjrekar shocked by tendulkars decision”

Am surprised that NOBODY anywhere in the media mentions this about 10dulkar
Now when one looks back, the ‘politicisation’ of 10dulkar started a few years back!!
No ‘normal’ sportsmen irrespective of his ability and sheer numbers can choose when to play and against whom and when to rest

Admit that my ‘outburst’ against 10dulkar is definitely excessive and looks unfair but if one really looks ahead, there maybe a parallel to bachchans entry to politics in eighties!
Now one can argue that 10dulkars sporting career is soon over unlike amitabhs due to the sheer nature of their careers.
But my point is exactly that-
a 10dulkar even when not in active sports has lots to give and need not join so soon what is the last refuge (for scoundrels)

    • There is a difference. Bachchan was elected by the people of Allahabad to Lok Sabha. And Sachin is only nominated to Rajya Sabha. Bachchan had many adversaries like late V.P.Singh while Sachin has no important adversaries who can make life difficult for him.

        • The opposition is taken by surprise by this googly. They cant express hostility openly as Sachin is too popular. As for his financial deals, I think his advisers must take the responsibility more than him. Mountains are made out of molehills in his case.

    Agree with that LS
Sanjana-yes there is nothing working with it, in general
For any other person, would be absolutely fine
But if one considers sachin ‘extraordinary’ the standards also should be ‘extraordinary’
More than this act of accepting this post, it is the general ‘direction’ which is a concern
Also the concern would’ve been less had he done it around the age of 60, even 55….

  7. There are 2 sides of the debate. One side : Politics is rot and gang of dishonest bedfellows and other side says, it will be like that unless people of standing n stature will join and be participatory…

An ounce of action (good) is much more greater and powerful than volumes of empty talks/cribbing or writing…

Sanjana -“As for his financial deals, I think his advisers must take the responsibility more than him”- hahaha
But who will take the moolah
Sachins not a minor imbecile and from my impression, is more than a shrewd cookie in financial investments
He even got away with tax exemptions for some no-no stuff like ferraris etc
Have seem folks try everything for this sort of commodity at the highest level and couldn’t
If anyone sees his itinerary in London when his team was getting debauchered (I’m aware of it) : resembles more an investment consultant making smart pre emotive moves
But again this is relative-none of this is inappropriate but as mentioned, standards from him are different
Not long ago, there aaa clamour for awarding him the highest award of his country-the din is not really the same now somehow (all in less than a year)–the public does notice, maybe

  9. What about Rekha? What will she talk about? When she speaks there wont be need for the speaker to say silence silence. She is going to make RS more glamorous. The older male members will be in a trance. And the likes of Renuka Chaudhury will have severe competition.
