  1. Satya 2 Opens To Dull Response

    Friday 7th November 2013 14.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Satya 2 opened to a very dull response of around 5%. The film stands practically no chance at the box office. Krrish 3 continues to dominate but even if there was no Krissh 3 this film would have struggled. There was audience count in single figures at some Delhi multiplexes and Delhi multiplexes tend to start better than most other big city plexes.

Satya 2 is a sequel/series to a film called Satya released in 1998, that film itself was a box office flop all over India apart from Mumbai and South so its beyond reason why a second film is made as results are pretty obvious even before release.

The collections of Satya (1998) were very low outside Mumbai and South but Satya 2 will go one step ahead and be a total washout all over India. The film has already seen a release in UAE and the results were no different.

  2. Krrish 3 Has Third Highest First Week

    Friday 8th November 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Krrish 3 recorded the third highest first week of time only behind Chennai Express and Ek Tha Tiger over the first seven day run. The film has collected a little over 123 crore nett. If the film can break the second weekend record it has chances of becoming the highest grossing film of all time but in order to that the drop on its eight day has to be much less than the drops over the past two days. The business of Krrish 3 so far is as follows.

    Friday – 18.75 crore
    Saturday – 15.50 crore
    Sunday – 15 crore
    Monday – 31.50 crore
    Tuesday – 20.50 crore
    Wednesday 13 crore
    Thursday – 9 crore nett

    TOTAL – 123.25 crore nett

A dubbed Telugu and Tamil version of the film has collected around 7 crore nett with most of the business coming in Telugu. The film is a record grosser as far as dubbed Hindi films are concerned as Ra.One and Don 2 grossed around 5 crore nett each in their entire run.

So 36 crores ahead of BOI if you add their dubbed version totals.

        • The thing is that Bollywoodhungama has started putting up these tables for various films. The numbers are often not the same as Taran’s though sometimes they are as with Krrish here. On CE Taran went upto 225 or something. Obviously that was a producer number. Here the individual numbers seem to be the same as what Taran put out on CE even in the initial stages. Not sure what the deal is. But in any case here it’s just 200. BOI had it a bit higher. Also remember that once the hype dust settles these guys don’t often care about lowering their totals. BOI has done it regularly in the past. Less so now.

      • It dont think it is big drop. CE was 5.5 cr second friday on BOI. From there, it went to do 22.5 cr second weekend and surprisingly very big 38.5 cr second week helped by failure of OUTIMD.
Anything above 6 cr friday will be very good, though it should drop big after weekend in the anticipation of Ramleela. And i think Singh Saheb will impact big in single screens. From There on, all the big films in successive films will dent big.

  3. Wonderful, wonderful article. I had most of the same points to write about this stuff but obviously, could NEVER match Rangan’s lucidity and clarity..

Lights, Camera, Conversation… “The metrosexualisation of muscle”

    ———————————————————————————-

Six-pack? Eight-pack? Or make it a round dozen – twelve-pack? How fit do we want our heroes to be?

When Aamir Khan acquired a six-pack (or eight-pack or whatever) for Ghajini, it was still a novelty, It was the first time a serious actor, as opposed to, say, Salman Khan, took to such obsessive body-sculpting – and it turned into a great publicity gimmick. Suddenly, we were hearing all about this exercise or that one, this diet schedule or that one – it was the same with Kareena Kapoor, when she went size zero – and the film was constantly in the news. But what did the washboard abs do for Aamir Khan’s character, who suffered from memory loss? You could argue that his fanatical exercise regimen gave him something to do while he blanked out, that it was a reassuring routine, but did we ever see him at the gym? Besides, given that memory loss, how would he remember what exercises to do, how many reps, or even where his gym was? Wouldn’t we have accepted him even without this chiselled form? This is, after all, a film about the mind.

And this craze – maybe we should call it madness – is now everywhere. Every hero is expected to bare his torso in front of the camera, from newcomers like Arjun Kapoor in Ishaqzaade to established stars like Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. (And of course, Hrithik Roshan in Krrish 3, which is the reason behind this piece.) You could argue that there are reasons for these bodily enhancements – that the Ishaqzaade character is a small-town boy who perhaps worships Salman Khan and therefore hits the gym reverently, that the Om Shanti Om character is perhaps spoofing this muscle mania, that the Krrish 3 character is a superhero and therefore deserves those super muscles. But, as in the case of Ghajini, would these characters have lost anything if they’d been normally built? Did all that ab-flashing – for just a few minutes – change the way we looked at the rest of the story? I’d say no.

When Hollywood stars get all testosteroney, there’s usually a purpose. In all-action movies, we want to see mountains of muscle like Schwarzenegger or Stallone or Dolph Lundgren. Stallone was a boxer in the Rocky films, and those painfully sculpted muscles made sense. Schwarzenegger was an unstoppable killing machine in the Terminator movies, and that almost-alien physique made sense. Lundgren played He-Man in Masters of the Universe, and it makes sense that he’d have those he-man muscles. You can make a case for James Bond or Ethan Hunt (from the Mission:Impossible movies) to have that kind of body – they are spies, after all, and they need to be in peak condition. You can argue that Sunny Deol or Dharmendra, too, could have used some extra definition in their bodies in the films where they uprooted hand pumps from the earth with their bare hands.

But why take all the trouble to beef yourself up for Krrish 3, when you’re just going to open a door and stand in profile so the audience can see your abs, and, later, walk around shirtless during a song sequence? It’s this use of one’s abs as a super-cool accessory, this metrosexualisation of muscle, that’s annoying. There’s no narrative context for today’s heroes to look this way. It’s just a glamorous selling point on posters and glossy magazine covers, and the actors get to add a bit of “credibility” to their process by saying things like “I gave up gulab jamuns and gnawed on a strip of chicken for eight months, and also woke up at 5 a.m. and spent five hours at the gym” – what’s left unsaid is “so please, please like me, and like my performance.” Perhaps there’s some subtext here. Perhaps, in the absence of a solid character, these actors seek solidity in other, superficial ways.
It’s gotten to a point where we’re hearing about Kareena Kapoor building a six-pack for her upcoming film with the director Karan Malhotra. A tabloidy news item posed this breathless question: “If Kareena has been asked to build a six-pack, how many packs has Karan asked of Hrithik. Any guesses?” From proudly flaunting curves to proudly flaunting the lack of them, the Indian heroine has sure come a long way, baby. That’s why it’s refreshing, sometimes, to turn to Tamil cinema. When we see a big hero like Ajith (in the Diwali release Arrambam) show up with a slight paunch and greying hair, we sense a solid man, someone who fills up the screen in more ways than one. Even better is the hulking Sharath Lohithaswa, who plays the villain in Paandiya Naadu (another Diwali release). When the villain looms this large, it’s all the more satisfying when he falls. If you asked them about six-packs, they’d probably head to the refrigerator.

      • This is a fine, but I disagree with Rangan’s ‘defence’ of Arnie and Lundgren- for each of these beefed-up folks, there was a Bruce Willis with perfectly ‘normal’ (non six-pack) physique. He is also mistaken on Sunny and Dharmendra- both of them never had a gym-body, their sturdy physique was the result of their natural body architecture. They NEVER built their physique for any particular role or whatever.

And this six-pack culture is their in Hollywood as well- I can understand Arnie flaunting his pecs in Conan, but when Jeremy Renner does the same as Hawkeye (Avengers) it seems completely unnecessary (in any case Hawkeye in the original comics has a very lean physique). The same goes for Chris Hemsworth in Thor

        • Yes I’d agree that even in Hollywood it’s more the norm than not and in fact it’s really become by now a global norm. Having said that he is right that irrespective of the kind of part it is vulgarly flaunted in Bollywood.

On Dharam and Sunny though you’ve misread him. He’s not suggesting they built up their physiques.

Whilst it is absolutely fine if somebody has major objections for the beefy look and x-packs etc (though that also needs examination as to why but will come to that later!)
But another thing to attack one while condone the other for the SAME thing AND trying to come out holier than thou AND KEWL together while doing this shady job…

So according to Rangan, it’s ok to beef up for being just a ‘boxer’ as in Stallone but not for someone who’s playing a goddamm superhero who is apparently gonna stop ‘trains’ not opponent boxers….

          What a shallow hollow defense!!!

And why does he not take into account Cavill in superman (whom I otherwise like!!). Is he not beefed up ?

And why this covertly attacking sunny and dharmendra who have never really been gym addicts (as we know of now)

There’s this subtle undercurrent of attacking north overall, it seems

Dhoom3 is built on the BIGGEST franchise in bolllywood.
The ONLY A-grade hero having being associated with dhoom has been hritik !!
aamir is only BENEFITTING from that franchise(& he knows it!!)

Dhoom3 has loads of ADDED box office friendly FRILLS-
Like Katrina –who is not much less than an a-grade hero currently ….
Like glorified sidekicks like abhishrek and uday…
The marketing acumen and power of the BIGGEST banner in Bollywood –yashraj

Compared to that Krrish3 is JUST hritik
With part contribution by Rakesh /filmkraft

Yeah, Satyam will point out –krrish is ALSO a franchise.,,
True –but THIS franchise is BUILT AROUND the BACKBONE called Hritik !!!

Take out aamir from dhoom3 -put in ANY top hero –results won’t be much different
Take out hritik from K3-put in ANYBODY–I mean ANYBODY from Bollywood–or even rest of the Indian fraternity–results won’t be half !!!!

So if dhoom3 makes more than krish 3 -is it of credit to aamir —
      A big NO

The big question first is though–let aamir make that much first !!
There’s stuff ready even for that 🙂

      • You’re quite right. Abhishek had not come off his best career point when D2 released (Dhoom, BnB, Dus, Sarkar, BM, Guru to follow). He was not called ‘The Rising Prince’ for this reason on an India Today cover in mid’2005. Aishwarya just happened to be in the film. The first film in the franchise just happened to be a hit. And of course D2 didn’t have any other frills either like Bipasha Basu showing up.

As we all know Abhishek is in a better box office position right now. Aamir has just been struggling for hits in all kinds of genres for about a dozen years now (soon he’ll struggle more with Hirani).

And what’s your hilarious logic here? Not that the franchise gets credit but that Hrithik gets it for creating the franchise? Even by the Alice in Wonderland standards of the blogosphere that is pretty amusing.

Finally, yes, Krrish has no frills. It’s a serious drama where Hrithik the actor performs in every scene and if you don’t like this there’s nothing else there.

You’ve gone pretty goofy in recent times! Not very surprising, if you don’t like the results you see try and change the subject. Guess who’s making excuses now? LOL! What happened to the public being the final deciders and all that? Not apparently when it comes to D3!

Seriously though Sanjay Dutt deserves the credit for 3I.

I must also thank you for pointing out all such frills when Agneepath released…

Two Titans Of Cinema, Under One Roof

You know you’re in the presence of a legend when the audience, which has been eating out of your hands so far, begins heckling you when your questions run longer than they should. It is a sign that the audience will not be satisfied until they see and hear as much as humanly possible from the man they came to see. That the audience firmly believed that every moment Amitabh Bachchan spent silent on stage was a moment of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity they would never get back. If TEHELKA Editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal, who hosted the session, had ended it at the scheduled time, there might have been a mini-riot. Wisely, when the bell rang, he immediately assured the crowd that the talk would go on.

It was, as Tejpal said, the most starstruck session in THiNK’s history, as Bachchan and Robert De Niro, two titans of cinema whose names are known to millions, were both present under one roof. De Niro, who will formally take the stage on Sunday afternoon, was watching in the audience; and when the session finally ended, he came onto the stage for a photo-op for the ages.

Bachchan, who said that the presence of a live audience “always brings fear” of not being acceptable, of making mistakes, was reserved, but engaging. He spoke of his childhood in one of India’s most elite families, growing up in an atmosphere of literature and poetry (his mother let him follow his acting dreams since “one poet in the family [was] enough”), to parents who came from two entirely different backgrounds. Of his early struggles in the industry after being rejected as a newsreader by All India Radio. Of the heights he reached once he broke through as a leading man in Zanjeer and Abhimaan. Of the fall from his perch and bankruptcy, of his reinvention on the small screen through Kaun Banega Crorepati.

It is a cliché, but what shone through the session was Bachchan’s utter humility and the legendary work ethic (he made sure, he said, that he would never miss a call time). Asked repeatedly to describe what goes into his decision to choose which films to do, he replied, “I’m bad at picking scripts; I just took work whenever I could. I just wanted what I was doing to be acceptable.” The younger crowd, he acknowledged, was more organised, more choosy when it came to their films. He talked about the blind faith he placed in his directors, how the only disagreements he’d have with them would be registered when the script was being narrated; once shooting would start, they would be boss.

At one point, Tejpal asked him whether the rumours of Indira Gandhi getting him his first break by writing a letter of recommendation were true. “I never saw the letter or anyone who got this letter. But,” he said, asking De Niro whether he agreed, “even a letter from God can’t get you a role in a film.”

Hrithik is not ahead of Aamir in any terms, not by a mile, not by a meter, not by a kilometer!

In his 25th year as a leading actor in cinema, Aamir Khan is on his way to have the highest grossing film in the history of indian cinema. Hrithik is a star, but the guy is limited by his acting and stardom. Ranbir has MUCH more potential IMO to become the next true “super star.” Actually Ranbir has already caught up with Hrithik amongst the younger generation. The 90’s (age group of 25-35) generation still belongs to the Khan’s and Aamir is a huge part of that following.

        Like

        • Agree about Aamir but Hrithik has a HUGE mass audience following, bigger than Aamir, and maybe even SRK. Ranbir is a long way from having this and by the looks of his next few movies, it doesn’t seem like his mass audience will grow. Plus his recent attempt at a wooing the mass audience was an epic disaster. Ranbir is a great actor but there’s something about him that makes him seem like a sissy/too feminine. I get the same feeling from Imran Khan. Ranveer Singh seems like the only young actor capable of developing a mass audience but the guy is damn annoying and a semi-buffoon.

        • After pretending that it was only about the box office Apex suddenly introduces these qualifiers when it’s Aamir. Genre for genre the man gets the biggest initial around but we’re supposed to believe that Hrithik somehow has the bigger following! Which of course cannot be verified in any box office sense! Not my terms but those Apex has chosen for so long. And it’s particularly curious to launch this argument because Hrithik has been extremely mortal the moment he moves away from a very commercial genre. And even within these there’s a big difference between Filmkraft and everything else. The only big success he has since his debut is D2 (hardly a solo!). Other than this Agneepath opened big but didn’t sustain. But ok by the standards of today it worked but this had lots of frills to it too. It’s even more curious to make this argument when the Krrish 3 numbers make quite clear that it’s light years away from any standard that the previous Krrish lived upto! Forget this, it’s in all probability not even going to touch CE (leaving aside Taran’s numbers.. and even here it might only touch those) which is hardly SRK’s biggest film the way that OSO was or perhaps HNY will be (again in the sense of having a lot else going on in the film). It gets to a point (and this happens with many fans) where any kind of result somehow makes the star! And these are the guys who were making fun of me for saying that a 90 crore gross for Talaash all said and done was pretty good. Not optimal, might have done a bit more but no one else could have done more with this genre. And again the idea that not Aamir, not even the franchise history, but Hrithik deserves the credit for whatever D3 does is completely daft!

        • I think there is some insecurity suddenly in apex’s views.
Excuses are already being prepared for D3 whatever result. Anything less than Krrish 3 and we will be hearing the Hrithik is better than Aamir. Anything slightly more and pretty much the same. Anything significantly more and Hrithik will begin to get the credit!!!
          Ha!
It’s like saying Aamir’s Lagaan made Gowariker and than Jodha Akbar’s success should be attributed to Aamir.
          The logic is flawed.

Come Dec 22nd, most of apex’s questions will be answered one way or the other.

the KEY point here is that Hritik is more than TEN years JUNIOR than aamir and NOT exactly a contemporary at all..

And with due respect, aamir has been brilliant and has excelled in his choices and moves…

To start with–I love aamir on most of these films but NOT in the ‘worshiper fanboy’ mode that’s been pedalled here…

          Ghajini–remake of South Indian HIT

Tzp-the writer/director amol Gupte was chucked out and aamir ‘took over’ the responsibility of ‘direction’

Three idiots–took over from Sanjay dutt who clicked big time in munnabhai, with perhaps the best all-round contemporary mani stream director hirani coming off two blockbusters
          (Talk about risk taking!)
‘Originality’– ‘adapted’ from chetan bhagatsalreqsy successful novel—spat with bhagat over crediting issues!!

Peepli live–aamir did not act in it-though creditably ‘backed’ it
spat (again!) with the female director over crediting issues !!!

And I am wondering if there is a secret, special ‘Reema Kagti’ Director’s Cut where Kareena indulges in ALL the bed-room/chair antics of a prostitute. How did I miss that? It has to be. If the desi men keep getting hard-ons merely for the fact that Kareena enacts a prostitute’s role, man, 3 cheers to our libido. At least we are ‘up’ above the rest of the world at least in one area!! And I also never knew that ‘family ‘people would flock to Aamir’s film expecting BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR!

well, it’s been a long time since box office figures have been trivialised and made fun of here. Boi is supposed to be biased, have agenda, modify commentary and so on

Live never been interested in these box office minutiae not only because I don’t see the point in fighting over 10 crores in a total of 200(!)) but also because the box office ‘food chain’ is v complex esp in India, so there are many others factors that we can’t take uno account
Aldo lots of tweaks are fine for income tax liability purposes…

This is NOT to condone taran and his ilk, but it’s interesting how in the discussions of krrish 3 box office, suddenly the SAMS Box office India figures are being quoted and held up by the SAME usual suspects who dissed them earlier 🙂

The SAME guys who wrote paras and long essays in discrediting ‘box office India’ are suddenly claiming BOI is the ultimate gold standard (!)

And it doesn’t take rocket science to figure it why…

This sudden elevation of boi as the GOLD standard (even when they haven’t even included the dubbed versions!) and are being alleged of under quoting figures is really somethign worth watching

Actually this is the ultimate admission of the box office force of Krrish 3 and ultimately Hritik Roshan 🙂

She also correctly picks up the character graphs of the lead characters here and finally nails it as to the type of actor HR is…
          Bravo filmigirl —
And as usual, filmigirl rips apart her pet hate PC 🙂

          Exerpts—

Hrithik Roshan is a very deliberate actor and very physical actor. Watching him over the years, you can see how he fully inhabits the body of his characters. So, it was fascinating to see the indifference with which he played his scenes with his on-screen wife Priya and this indifference fully set the tone of the character of Krishna for me. Krishna is a man ripped from an idyllic life in the countryside and thrust into an urban, upper-middleclass lifestyle that has no meaning to him. Priya is happy as a clam, with her career as a TV news person and endless stream of designer frocks but Krishna takes no pleasure in it and, worse, he can’t seem to find the knack of holding a “normal” job–security guard, waiter.

Moving on to the two ladies of Krrish 3, Priya and Kaya, heroine and vamp, respectively. I was dreading Priya’s role going in, if for no other reason than she was played by Priyanka Chopra, but the two things that have bothered me the most about Priyanka’s screen presence where neutralized quite well here by Rakesh (proving yet again that he knows exactly what I like in a film). The first is her propensity to wear way too much make-up and way too few clothes for characters that are supposed to be ordinary women. This was successfully poked fun at within the first ten minutes of the film, which combined with Priya’s fancy TV hosting job, was just a nice acknowledgement that Priyanka’s glam act is an act, and one put on by wealthy women. The second is that she seems incapable of acting like a mature grown woman, putting on a grating “cute and girlish” act that has only grown worse as she’s gotten older. What’s tolerable at an adorably dim 22 is far less so in a woman over 30 and there is a scene late in the film that has–for plot reasons–Priyanka acting as Kaya acting as Priya. The sarcastic edge this gives Priyanka’s usual flighty heroine act was really effective. I’m not sure if Priyanka intended it this way but I thought it worked very well in the film.

As for Kaya, her character was the closest I’ve seen to the vamp with a heart of gold in a long time. Besides the fact that Kangana Ranaut is just electric on screen, I thought Kaya was a fascinating character. She is a manimal, created by Kaal to be obedient to him, even as he treats her like shit and orders her around like a robot. When she meets Krishna, she’s touched by his kindness–literally touched. Physical contact done with love and tenderness is something she’s never experienced and neither is praise. When Kaya, who is unconsciously becoming more sympathetic to Krishna, pulls a Krrish and helps a small child, she’s stunned by the applause and gratitude of the crowd. She asks, “What did I do?”

Perhaps I’m biased because the non-human who finds a soul and learns to love is one of my favorite science-fiction tropes but I loved Kaya. And I appreciated that she got to make her own decisions in the end and use her life in the way she thought was best. I also have to say that the bizarre picturization for “Dil Tu Hi Bataa,” filmed in Jordan and featuring Kangana decked out in some elaborate headdresses, makes a lot more sense when it’s clear that the song is from Kaya’s point of view. The desert can be seen to represent her previously empty heart and the odd styling… well, who am I to judge what a manimal would find fashionable?

The last two major characters are Rohit, the father, and Kaal, the villain–two different faces of wisdom. One has morals and the other is concerned with profit. You can guess how that confrontation goes; making money is not an end in itself in Rakesh Roshan’s world. His message is simple: Love, Peace, and Hrithik.

Wherein the reviewer (irrespective of his/her antecedents) tries to get the tone/texture/target audience of the film and gets the ESSENCE right
The rest is usually peppering with jokes/anecdotes and I don’t mind them for eg here filmigirl lambasts PC excessively though the reality is that poor PC did not do anything wrong
But it’s ok to have these likes/dislikes
But it shouldn’t distract from the overall ‘schemata’

        • No one elevated BOI or anyone else here. At least not for anyone who can read and understand English. You’re unfortunately following the well-trodden path SRK fans first developed. Of attacking the messenger when the news isn’t to your liking or when you feel that the slightest bit of credit is being taken away from your favorite star. I don’t think that people who try to give credit to Hrithik for D3’s potential success and pretend Aamir is reaping the benefits really have a leg to stand on when it comes to questions of honesty! Every single thing I’ve said in my comments you’ve more or less proved. Being a partisan of a star (which is different from being a fan.. how? a partisan tries to alter ‘reality’ to shape his or her perspective) perhaps all of this is wholly natural to you but what you don’t realize is that you’re not really making a case here. You’re just confirming with every comment that you are ‘fanatical’ about Hrithik. And you’re hardly alone with this kind of attitude because many stars have these kinds of fans all of whom think that simply attacking anyone who dares to question the star in any way gets one to the desired goal. Taran or BOI or whatever narrative one favors isn’t one’s savior because those guys will easily move on to the next film in a matter of days or weeks! And so even here the ‘honesty’ is lacking on your side because if you want to go by Taran you can’t then unilaterally decide that Ranbir isn’t comparable to hrithik at the box office (when everyone was asserting the opposite after YJHD) nor can you unilaterally say things about Aamir. If one is not available to any kind of reasonable debate in these matters one cannot suddenly pretend to be more ‘subtle’ when it’s about stars one doesn’t like or at least is anxious about. Nor can one play this ‘hey I’m just quoting one important source Taran’ game. Specially when he’s just quoting producer totals himself! Forget BOI, why is it that from BoC to NBOC all of whom have numbers closer to BOI you’ve never made much attention? Aren’t you also showing a desperation to somehow have Hrithik get to 200, the way SRK fans were earlier or Salman fans or whoever? Taran could be adding a 100 crores and calling the film at 250 right now and you’d still say the same thing. Why? Is one forced to simply accept things this way? When one clearly knows there’s something very dubious about these claims? Again you are free to do all of this but let’s not pretend others are being dishonest and what not. If I were a true Hrithik fan, which I’m not in any sense (not even a fan of his), I actually would find the Krrish result somewhat dismaying, not least because it would confirm in my mind a certain stagnation on hrithik’s part but furthermore it would also tell me that even in his strongest genre he’s falling way behind his earlier benchmarks. Is he a top star? Absolutely. But that was evident after his first film! The rest has been about a fits and starts career where despite having this box office potential no one has ever (yes EVER) put him ahead of whoever his strongest peers happened to be. Desperation can’t cover this gap. Assuming that one still maintains some contact with reality (always a dangerous assumption on a blog I know). I still have nothing against Krrish in any ideological sense (the way I sometimes do with SRK’s films) but I found it an appalling piece of cinema (I did not at all mind the older Krrish), about as unwatchable as Ra One. Appalling as narrative, appallingly handled SFX, so on and so forth. Compared to this the last Krrish was a great classic. I’m not partisan when it comes to judging this stuff. I found CE quite engaging recently. And even though YJHD was watchable for the genre I found it every bit as poor as many other films from the Johar camp in this context. And yeah I haven’t liked a major release more than Talaash in recent times (might be forgetting something). Krrish is utterly awful. An embarrassment in my view much like Ra One. Yeah I’d rather watch both in the same day than sit through Drona. But that doesn’t mean much!

‘Krrish 3’, Hrithik Roshan’s Bollywood superhero film franchise, with sensational box office collections has entered Bollywood’s elite Rs 200 crore club on the seventh day (November 7) of its release.
Noted film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted the box office collections figures: @Krrish3 collects 13.44 Cr on day 7. Domestic Total 166.52 cr. Overseas 36 cr. Worldwide 202.42 cr.
As of November 7, ‘Krrish 3’ has collected Rs. 166.52 in India and with ‘fatal’ reviews of the only release this weekend, it seems that ‘Krrish 3’ is still in the running!
‘Krrish 3’ now joins Aamir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’ in the Rs 200 crore club. However, King Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’ still retains its spot as the fastest film to reach the Rs 100 crore mark, in just 4 days.
On the fifth day of its release, ‘Krrish 3’ had already entered Bollywood’s elite Rs 100 crore club.
Third film in the series, ‘Krrish 3’ created history by registering the highest collections ever on a single day, having garnered Rs 35.91 crore on Monday.

        • there is an elementary error in this article. Even Taran has it at 200 crores at that point only with a worldwide gross. But with 3I or CE only the domestic totals are being referred to. CE for instance must have reached its worldwide 200 much earlier than its domestic one! Also if one is just going by a worldwide 200 many other films would join such a list!

Now it’s a different matter that Taran being 40-45 crores ahead of other estimates at this point the film will cross 200 even domestically. But it’s not there yet. The article is simply false even going by Taran’s numbers. of course going by these other estimates it’s still unlikely to do much more than 185.

I am sure this movie has done closer to the BOI numbers than the producers. But who can prove it anyways?. One things certain though, the movie has been liked and has trended well after that start and is a hit at the very least. Think this will end around 190 crores in BOI and around 270 crores in Tarans book…

  13. Krrish 3 Holds Strong On Day 8

    Saturday 9th November 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Krrish 3 held up well on day eight with collections around the 7.50 crore nett mark. The Gujarat area is still on holiday which is an advantage to the film. The weekend collections should go to 30 crore nett or higher. The record for second weekend is 33 crore nett by 3 Idiots. The business of Krrish 3 so far is as follows.

    Friday – 18.75 crore
    Saturday – 15.50 crore
    Sunday – 15 crore
    Monday – 31.50 crore
    Tuesday – 20.50 crore
    Wednesday 13 crore
    Thursday – 9 crore nett
    Friday – 7.50 crore nett

    TOTAL – 130.25 crore nett

K3 will now going to beat 3 idiot 2nd week record.

Better trending than ETT of course but not at CE level. Can’t recall what YJHD’s first week was, if the trending was better than this but in any case that film over performed given that it was just a multiplex deal and hardly a film of the scale of ETT or Krrish.

thing is give credit where its due atleast jodha akbar a historical worked and some great actors didn’t managed it with mangal pandey or ashoka

hrithik is still a close to a decade younger than his so called so called senior actors

    Like

    • True Hrithik is younger. The conjecture I would say is that by this time the equivalent for Salman (13 years in the industry in 2001) he already had a MPK/HAHK, SRK (in 2004) had DDLJ/KKHH and a streak going on from 2001-2004 and Aamir (in 2001) had RH and the Lagaan moment.
Hrithik in comparison has never been as “hot” as a commodity than post his debut! He also has not had a “monster” box office hit in the ATBB side. Still plenty of time on his side, but he won’t achieve much with K3 going forward, age will catch up on these types of films.
He simply is a big star but at no point in his career has he been considered #1. The closest was 2006 and than he took an 18 month break.

The “Khans” can at least lay claim to some kind of golden patch. SRK (01-04), Aamir (07-09) and Salman (10-12) where most what they touched was successful.

But this whole #1 debate or which star is bigger is rather vague nowadays. The idea that an actor not associated with a film can get the credit for its success is pretty amusing!

      • And if your going to compare Aamir and Hrithik compare ZNMD and Talaash. Not a big difference in gross, but the former considered a “hit” and the latter considered a “disappointment”. And compare the genres, the former a multiplex movie – coming of age type and the latter a psychological thriller with a pretty grim dark theme.

A true STAR is one who can pump life (& box office!) into a project like krrish3 that’s stale, cheesy, dated, risky (no other superhero film has worked in Bollywood ever!!) and take it to safety and beyond ….

    NOT one
Who takes UNNNATURAL breaks and employs his excellent script sense, timing and undeniable grip over film financing into film choices and PIGGY BACKS choicest projects,,,

I know the above description is UNFAIR for aamir who is an above average actor( can be brilliant at times) and I’m a big fan of his satyamev Jayate initiative
    BUT
when one compares Aamirs pull and STARDOM to someone like hritik and even srk and Salman, the fan frenzy generated by aamir falls short ( to blogs like this!)
And aamir being an intelligent guy knows it more than his fans!!

    • So fans of stupid films which are successful have bigger stars then ‘good’ films which are successful. What does that say about fans of stupid films?
The box office is not always pure stardom. There is a premium in certain instances or goodwill and aamir has earnt that. And mind you aamir has done some poor stuff of the srk, hrithik standard. Fanaa, ishq, raja Hindustani. All were hits.
Guys like you try to create the impression of ‘knowing cinema’ … Admit to the cheeniness of a krrish3 and then attempt to celebrate it as well. Lol what a confused soul you are.

  20. Krrish 3 Has Huge Jump On Second Saturday

    Sunday 10th November 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Krrish 3 had a huge jump on Saturday of around 40% with collections of around 10.50 crore nett. This makes the two day second week total 18 crore nett. It will be the second film in history to go over 30 crore nett for the second weekend. The first being 3 Idiots.

The second weekend record is 33 crore nett plus of 3 Idiots which may be out of reach of Krrish 3 as it will have to collect over 15 crore nett on Sunday which looks tough.

Krrish 3 in Hindi has now collected around 141 crore nett in nine days which is the same level as lifetime business of films like Dabangg and Bodyguard and by the end of its second weekend it will be the fifth highest grosser ever.

As predicted best trending movie since 3 idiot.
Sunday can be between 12-15 crore.

Anil Kapoor’s 24 hours has caught the imagination of viewers who are fed up of saas bahu nonsense. And there are stars from anil kapoor to shabana azmi rubbing shoulders with tv stars. While in films he is more of a baffoon , on TV anil kapoor is quite good.

Colors is really offering something different and better than Star Plus and Zee which are depending on staple saas bahu stupid dramas and boring costume half baked mythologicals and historicals.

This time KBC is not doing that well. Too much competition. But it is holding well and is the sole star on Sony at present.

Marvel’s ‘Thor’ Soars to Top of U.S.-Canada Movie Charts
    By REUTERS
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK — Marvel superhero Thor pounded his box office competitors over the weekend, muscling movie sequel “Thor: The Dark World” to the top of U.S. and Canadian charts with a hefty $86.1 million in debut ticket sales.

The 3D film starring Chris Hemsworth trounced last week’s top movies. Raunchy comedy “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” finished in second place with $11.3 million from Friday through Sunday, according to Hollywood.com.

“Free Birds,” the 3D movie featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as turkeys who team up and travel back in time to get turkey off Thanksgiving dinner plates, earned the No. 3 slot with $11.2 million, just ahead of senior citizen buddy comedy “Last Vegas” which took in $11.1 million.

“Thor: The Dark World” also hauled in $94 million from international markets, where the movie began playing on October 30, distributor Walt Disney Co said. IMAX showings added another $11 million globally, and its combined global sales through Sunday reached $327 million.

The new “Thor” installment co-stars Natalie Portman as the love interest for Thor, the mighty god of thunder who battles to save his homeland of Asgard from evil forces. Tom Hiddleston plays Thor’s villainous brother Loki.

“Thor 2” fell a bit short of industry forecasts that it would kick off with up to $92 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters. But the sequel opened stronger than the original movie, which debuted with $65.7 million in May 2011.

Thor also appeared in 2012 smash hit movie “The Avengers,” which helped stoke interest in the character. According to a poll by the Fandango movie website, 72 percent of ticket buyers said fond memories of Thor in “Avengers” influenced their choice to see “Thor: The Dark World.” The “Thor” sequel cost $170 million, Disney said.

“It’s a great start,” said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, adding that Disney would have considered “anything north of $80 million to be a good result.”

Hollis also noted that the film was playing especially well with family audiences.

“Marvel has transitioned,” he said. “This is an everybody picture.” Business ticked up as the weekend went on, and he said Disney was anticipating an especially strong performance on Sunday and Monday, given the Veterans Day U.S. holiday on Monday, when many schools and businesses will be closed.

Second-place film “Bad Grandpa” stars comedian Johnny Knoxville in disguise as an 86-year-old man who travels cross-country with his 8-year-old grandson, pulling pranks on unsuspecting people they encounter on the way.

Animated movie “Free Birds” tells the tale of a pair of turkeys that try to keep their kind off Thanksgiving dinner plates, while “Last Vegas” follows four lifelong friends who reunite for a bachelor party. It stars Oscar winners Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline.

Last week’s winner, sci-fi thriller “Ender’s Game,” dropped to fifth place, taking in $10.3 million after a steep drop-off of 62 percent in box office receipts.

Two films in limited release expanded to more than 1,000 theaters each. Drama “12 Years a Slave,” starring British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, brought in $6.6 million, while “About Time,” a romantic comedy starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson, collected $5.2 million.

“Bad Grandpa” was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. CBS Films, a unit of CBS Corp, distributed “Last Vegas.” “Free Birds” was distributed by privately held Relativity Media. Lions Gate Entertainment Corp released “Ender’s Game.” Fox Searchlight, a unit of 21st Century Fox, released “12 Years a Slave.” “About Time” was distributed by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp.

  28. Krrish 3 Second Weekend Business

    Monday 11th November 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Krrish 3 collected 31 crore nett in its wecond weekend to take its business to 153 crore nett. It is the second highest collection ever for the second weekend after 3 Idiots which collected around 33 crore nett.

The weekend breakdown was as follows

    Friday – 7.50 crore
    Saturday – 10.50 crore
    Sunday – 13 crore

The film will be the highest grossing film ever in Rajasthan, Bihar and Orissa, a couple of other circuits may join the list but it still remains to be seen if the film can get to 200 crore nett. The third will probably determine whether it gets there or not.

Interesting report. Here they claim producer is over quoting and BOI is low and the real number is actually 170 crores for 10 days.

    Like

    • on the BOI points they’re making I remember most of them. In fact many of us have talked about this stuff over the years.

The bottom-line is that there is simply no way to precisely account for all the numbers in India which is where all this stuff comes in. There is simply no data collection source that has everything the way it’s done in the West where every single ticket sale is accounted for in every sense. Now while this was always the case there are two reasons why the problem has become more acute in the contemporary age. First off because of online and cable TV consumers you have a market for obsessively focusing on the figures. More importantly because trending patters on 99% of even successful films are rather mediocre (to put it kindly) this is a way of changing the subject and making it about absolute numbers.

    • By the way even in this piece note where they end up:

“Any source, any figure you take.. Krrish 3 is still one the biggest blockbusters of the year. It’s a hugely profitable film for all its investors.”

This is a completely dubious claim. it’s clear that the film has certain been liked enough by people to get to a certain total (whoever you believe) but to go from here and suggest that this means it’s been hugely accepted and is hugely profitable or what not is clearly false. The film in its second weekend still fell somewhat short of the 3I mark, this 4 years after that film. Much as these 200 crore grossers are either made-up ones or barely scratch that overall 3I number. So a film gets to 200 off 80, another gets to the same off 150, in each case you say it’s the same kind of blockbuster and that it’s hugely profitable and what not. In other words production costs and distribution prices must be completely static and for all kinds of subjects for this to be the case (i.e. for films to be equally profitable or whatever as long as they all clear some absolute number)! Leaving this aside there are also never proper numbers forthcoming for production costs et al. Producers often exaggerate these to build up hype before release and later on move away from the very same once the film releases. It’s simply not possible to assess how profitable Krissh or any other film is without knowing these numbers. But even without this information the idea that this is a big blockbuster is absurd. The same was true for CE, the same for ETT and so forth. CE and Krrish clearly trended better than ETT. Even to get to ETT’s level you need some sort of audience acceptance in the initial phase. All of this is obvious. But the Bombay definition of a hit these days is ‘any film that gets an initial, doesn’t totally collapse and then gets to a big enough number’. Around this basic formula all kinds of games are played. Whether it’s about the hyping of numbers or fabricating them, whether it’s about a narrative that is even more false than this, whether it’s about using centers selectively, so on and so forth.

        • The range runs from BOI’s 153 to Taran’s 206! Now in the former case the dubbed totals haven’t been included but they usually weren’t in the past. Then started being specified separately. Now even that has stopped happening.

The problem once again is that there’s a market for this stuff. It creates a big news story online or on cable or wherever. And then there are fans so desperate to get to these totals that they don’t really care how these numbers have been brought about.

          Like

    • will also add here that leaving aside a concern with the factual in these matters, which of course the guys doing the spin or the fans/partisans don’t have, the irony here is that even coming at it from the other side the theory of the case is self-deconstructed. Whenever I bring up these questions or comments (and I have for years) I invariably have partisans of one star or the other popping up and saying I’m doing it to pull someone down or that I’m frustrated or whatever. Because most people in these cases have apparently had their mental maturity arrested at the kindergarten stage this kind of sentiment has many takers. The idea that whether one likes a star or not, a film or not, one might still be interested in the ‘actual’ box office picture is conceptually rocket science to many of these folks. But the point is it’s not about whether I or anyone else on a blog like this asks these questions. From Taran to BOI the narratives are deconstructed by these very same folks. Because first off all they change numbers, play loose with them in ways that ought to be obvious to anyone. But even if there is always a group of fans willing to buy into them (for instance the SRK fan might have had a problem with exaggerating ETT’s numbers but not Ce! The Hrithik fan similarly with respect to both and so on) for a given film there is also this larger narrative. A dozen times every year the likes of Taran get up and exhaust their vocabulary hyping these films. Two weeks later everything’s back to normal and on to the next one. This keeps happening. All kinds of figures are submitted to this same hysterical commentary. every film is historic, every film is Sholay, if you take a bathroom break a record is broken. What this does is eventually make the commentary meaningless. As a fan of one star or the other how happy can you possibly be when in a month or so the very same things will be said about another film?! In fact they’ll say more. So if YJHD is historic it’s presumably beating everything else, then if CE is doing the same it’s better than YJHD, then it’s Krissh’s turn and so on. So even for the greatest partisan there is no ‘permanent’ achievement here. And I do think we’ve reached a new low with Krrish as the numbers are so much one excess of what anyone else has calculated that this too will start happening more often going forward. The Tarans of the world meanwhile get what they’re paid for (!), they hype up things, these stories are spread in the media, you see the 100 crore or 200 crore headlines, they can say they’ve done their job! But again this happens every month!

Now of course a complete failure cannot be sold like this except that Ra One was. SRK made fun of its flopping at the Filmfares, otherwise Taran and others never conceded this. It’s just the way things are. I think looking at everything and based on experience in these matters one can judge how a film has done and what range the numbers most likely occupy. But that’s about it. Otherwise it’s just a circus routine overtime a big film releases. One just has to put up with it.

Krrish 3: Love, Peace, and Hrithik
I apologize for this review coming so late! I had two functions to attend last weekend and just barely managed to fit in a screening of the film itself. I’m going to try and keep this as spoiler-free as possible, respecting Rakesh Roshan’s wishes, but really I would suggest just seeing the film if it seems at all like something you would enjoy.

If you are the kind of person bothered by the fact that there is no Krrish 2, then Krrish 3 is definitely not the film for you. Much like Rakesh Roshan’s numbering of the series, his narrative is more concerned with what feels right, as opposed to what would make logical sense. Fortunately, that’s exactly the way I like it. What Rakesh Roshan (and co-writers Honey Irani and Robin Bhatt) have given us is a wonderful mix of science-fiction, family drama, action, and good old-fashioned masala dil. Krrish may look slicker and more musclely than heroes of days past but his heart is firmly anchored in the time when we cheered for Vijay, not Don.

Krrish 3 opens with a recap of the first two films. Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan), a young man with a good heart and an intellectual disability, is given the Flowers for Algernon treatment by a mysterious alien named Jadoo. The second film has Rohit’s orphan son Krishna (also Hrithik Roshan) being kept in a state of edenic innocence, which is shattered when flighty city girl Priya (Priyanka Chopra) stumbles into his world. Krishna follows her to Singapore where he uncovers real evil, embraces a secret identiy as superhero “Krrish,” and finds out that he’s not an orphan after all.

Now, in the third installment, Krishna and Priya have moved to Mumbai with papa Rohit but trouble finds them in the form of one Mr. Kaal (Vivek Oberoi), head of Kaal Pharmaceuticals. You see, Kaal is running this scam where he has his troupe of elite manimals (yes, I said “manimals”) release a deadly virus into some area and then sits back and waits for the world to come begging for an antidote. Guess what happens when he sends his most elite manimal Kaya (Kangana Ranaut) to that very same Mumbai with a vial of deadly virus? Guess who she runs in to?

The themes of family and social responsibility raised by Rakesh, as well as his use of the full masala palate (including a comedy track with Rajpal Yadav), make Krrish 3 feel more like Shankar’s recent work in Tamil films like Anniyan and Endhiran than with contemporary Hollywood superhero films like The Dark Knight. Unlike the typical Western superhero these days, Krrish isn’t acting out the desires of the lazy male teenager with a superiority-inferiority complex but grappling with issues of what it means to live in the modern world, of how to fit into society.

Krishna finds joy in helping people as masked hero “Krrish.” He’s not a vigilante, acting outside the law to bring violent revenge on those who would dare harm another’s property. No, Krrish is a friendly antidote to accident and mishap. Let the law handle the law-breakers; Krrish is going to use his powers to save people who would otherwise die. And he makes sure to tell the audience that they shouldn’t imitate his stunts but should imitate his modus operandi–we can all be Krrish, if we reach out a helping hand. The contrast of Krishna, the boxed up husband riding in the private car, to Krrish interacting with people on the street cannot be an accident.

In the end, Krrish doesn’t want adulation or garlands or even to “find himself.” Krrish–and Krishna–just want to do what’s right, to help their fellow human beings because they can. It’s a beautifully uncynical message and the type of small ‘r’ romance I wish we saw more of these days.

  34. in the same year we had man of steel and a certain nolan angle so in comparison it pales if one is grown on hollywood movie but in indian context its a step forward(will easily be the best indian superhero movie) though i didn’t liked the movie but kids are liking it

thing is such genre provides employment (to technocrats)along with masala(to lesser skill technician)

imagin hrithik roshan in somthing like man of steel…pity he is wrong industry…lesser acting talent but he improved only but a big spirit
