Aamir to do a wrestling film with ‘Kushti’?

Actor Aamir Khan, who will turn 50 on March 14 this year, is the eldest of the Khan trinity. And while age is just a number, he is perhaps going to be the first one to embrace it. Sources claim that for his next film, tentatively titled Kushti, Aamir is preparing himself to play a character based on the life and struggles of Mahavir Phogat – the father of Indian women’s wrestling stars Geeta and Babita Kumari Phogat.

“Aamir will be undergoing a lot of training to play a wrestler who trains his daughters to take up a sport. It is a rather difficult role to play. He needs to look like a wrestler and also sound like one,” said a source.

The Phogat sisters were also part of one of Aamir’s Satyamev Jayate shows recently and it’s perhaps this show that inspired Aamir to take up the role. The last time Aamir Khan starred in a sports film, he was seen walking the red carpet at the Oscars. And if the plot of Kushti is what the sources would have us believe, then another blockbuster from Aamir Khan seems to be lined up. It isn’t often that a superstar plays 50 at 50. Aamir would be the coolest Khan if he were to pull that one off. But it seemingly won’t come easy. Kushti would perhaps release on Christmas next year. A pretty long wait indeed for all Aamir Khan fans.

  1. Looks like another great choice from Aamir…

I like the idea.A great variation from the earlier line up. And the title ‘ Kushti’ is better tan ‘ Dangal’.

  3. I am sure the choice will be fine, but I think Aamir is falling into the trap since Ghajini. Beefing up his body for that movie has almost become an excuse to find some physical roles like D3 and now this. I’d also say PK was quite a physical role in a different way, in 3 idiots he needed to play someone half his age and Talaash he had a different physical appearance. All in all, it’s pretty genuine but I’d like to see him just do a normal role soon. Not in a silly film but just a normal physical appearance, a bit like TZP or Fanaa.
A film on wrestling though – I am UP for that. Following WWF/WWE since the age of 7, this will be interesting. And physically it will be OK even given his height because wrestling is a field for all sizes.

WWF/WWE is not kushti yaar…lol…it was soap opera for men/kids. I was also a fan of WWF/WWE growing up but now its as lame as ever..cant relate to it so I watch old ‘matches’ on youtube. I have the WM 6 dvd that featured Hulk vs warrior…colossal match by two very un-athletic men. BUT real kushti is boring to watch IMO.

on this film…again something of a new role for Aamir…i like the plot of a father training his two daughters a ‘mans’ sport…lots of potential to be great and have great moments in it. Would like to find out who the director will be though.

    • I agree more or less with what you’re saying but I think what happens is that sometimes success overtakes you and it’s hard to then subvert that logic. For instance it’s becoming harder for Aamir to look regular in any film, even in Talaash there was a different look for a character that didn’t really require it (though I liked the look). On the other hand when he was much younger he did Sarfarosh that way and here a look might have benefited him. of course he can have a different look without beefing up. But in contemporary India it’s hard to divorce the two, specially when every other peer of his generation is also doing the same. So it’s partly that he has to keep doing different (except when it’s something huge like D3), partly the fact that ‘different’ means certain things in the contemporary context, and finally the sense that everyone of any age in Bollywood finds it necessary to beef up. Having said that I do sometimes miss the Aamir of the post-Lagaan period who was doing lots of stuff without necessarily playing with his look all the time. But it does become a trap. Kamalahaasan was the first to fall into it years ago. Beyond a point it was very hard to get ‘normal’ Kamal in a movie. But again I do agree that even if he has to do this it might be a good idea to drop the body for a while.

I think now is the best time for him to direct his 2nd movie. Hopefully something bigger than Taare Zameen Par but not too big. It would be more interesting if it’s a non message movie. Surprise the janta!

I think you missed the precision cut mohawk hairstyle in TZP 🙂

I think Aamir is going to take this year off……like he did after 3I (where he took 3 years before starring in a big film). We wouldn’t see him until sometime later next year. Now is the time for him to save Imran’s career….again.

  5. he needs to do a mature romantic love story

  6. I hate this sport,Wrestling.
As for mature love story, I am all for it. With Rani or Kareena who suit him best.

Aamir Khan “may” start Nitish Tiwari’s #DANGAL , based on Haryana’s wrestler Mahavir Phogat, then he plays a baddie opp Rajni Sir in #ROBOT2

    • AamirsFan Says:

seems like another rumor…initially reported in Nov 2014…it would certainly be a huge cross over for the Aamir fans who do not watch any South Indian cinema. Also Aamir and Rajni would be reunited after the horrible Aatank hi Aatank. I’ll be honest…the only two Rajni movies I’ve ever seen are both hindi and both because of AB: Hum and Andha Kanoon. Not sure how this onscreen chemistry would work.
