Thugs Of Hindostan has seen a big fall on day two as collections come in lower than earlier estimates at 28 crore nett apprx. The film has seen a big drop of 45% on an all India basis but most places have come down 50%. The drop is around 30% in UP, Gujarat and Bihar but that is due to post Diwali.

This takes the two day total of the film to 78 crore nett which is a good total but the drop in collections is a bad sign Prem Ratan Dhan Payo released in 2016 on the same day as Thugs Of Hindostan grosed 39.32 crore nett on day one and was 29.90 crore nett on day two which is a drop of 24%. Here it is 45% which is far more than it should be.

The drop had to be around 15% if the film was to meet its huge expectations and somewhere between 20-30% would have been called a normal drop. The places that are holding better will eventually drop when the holiday affect is over. The collections of Thugs Of Hindostan till date are as follows.

    Friday – 50,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 28,00,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 78,00,00,000 apprx

    • PRDP – 39 to 29 ( 24% drop)
      Thugs – 50 to 28 (45% drop)

PRDP was also fine at places but I didn’t like it overall but some scenes were very good and that struck the chord in interiors and dragged the movie towards 180-200 crs. In that sense, I don’t see Thugs going over 200 crores.

        • ?? Who am I to accept or not? If they say 50 cr and 2nd day 28 cr – thats 45% drop. Other figures floating are 43 cr and 23 cr – which is more than 50% drop. BOI is still less.

Above I just responded to BOI and doing comparison with PRDP with their own numbers.

My first argument was about 28 crore after such an unprecedented negative publicity which PRDP did not elicit.

Repairing that will take some time. No Padman or whatever will be spared. Aamir fans are true to form. They are not like Salman ones who expected Sultan to do blockbuster business in China or those that thought Bahubali 2 would work. Hindsight is what you get with China. Delayed release helps, best not to release it at all.

          • I dont believe that what happened here will happen there. In that case Baahubali 2 would have been the biggest hit and Hichki would have tanked on day 3.
Aamir’s prestige in china is the fond imagination of aamirians.
I will rather go ahead with china release than worrying about imaginary prestige which in reality is fan following.

          • In this global world, China probably already knows the news. It would be political suicide so to speak. When we think of previous Aamir films to send there, Mela or Raja Hindustani wouldn’t be on there. It will last a few days and it’s not a prestige decision but one about commercial acumen. Otherwise it’s just an academic exercise to see what the bottom line market is for AK film.

It did decent business in India and with the very strong female protagonist angle with child abuse it was bound to strike a chord. TOH doesn’t do anything of this. It will hurt the future market of Bollywood more than any movie ever sent to China.

    THUGS OF HINDOSTAN MOVIE REVIEW
    Time of India

    **1/2

Thugs… is one of Aamir Khan’s worst films in recent times

Thugs Of Hindostan Story: After the British company’s officer Clive (Lloyd Owen) takes over the kingdom of Mirza (Ronit Roy), princess Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Khudabaksh aka Azaad (Amitabh Bachchan) form a band of rebel pirates who swear to defeat the English officer and win their freedom back. The British Company in return, hire the wily thug Firangi (Aamir Khan) to track Azaad’s gang and thwart his plans.

Thugs Of Hindostan Review: Action, adventure and fantasy is a genre that you associate with Hollywood’s big-ticket movies. So to watch India’s answer to films like Pirates Of The Caribbean, at the onset, seemed like a novel experience. While Thugs Of Hindostan has the aspirations to be a big-budget entertainer, it can’t quite emulate the same thrills of a Johnny Depp swashbuckler. The film has the look and feel.of a top grade adventure film but the lacklustre writing and the tedious narrative dampens the whole experience.

The story begins in the late 1700s, where a conniving British officer named Clive deceives the honest king Mirza and dupes him off his family, life and kingdom. The young princess Zafira is the only one who escapes, along with the king’s trusted guard Khudabaksh, and many years later they form a gang of pirates who are basically a bunch of goodfellas. Their only mission is to get their kingdom free from Clive and his Company rule. Thugs Of Hindostan is based during the British rule in India, when the English used their trading position to dominate India’s princely states. But the fact that the heroes of this tale are pirates, doesn’t quite fit into the Indian context, given that Indians never gained notoriety as pirates. The Maratha navy under leaders like Kanhoji Angre did gain bandit status during the 1700s, but Thugs Of Hindostan (TOH) doesn’t quite look like it’s a story emerging from the coastal regions of the country. Historical inaccuracy aside, TOH is an adventure movie and you need cinematic liberty to setup a swashbuckling story. While the production design by Sumit Basu and cinematography by Manush Nandan are excellent, the predictable nature of the writing by writer / director Vijay Krishna Acharya doesn’t help the movie at all. You can guess every plot development and the fact that the movie doesn’t throw up a single good surprise or twist, just rocks the boat. The tiresome screenplay features scenes that are too prolonged and overtly dramatised, as a result the story hits choppy waters. What’s also funny is that the British officers speak in fluent Hindi, even when they’re talking to each other.

Another disappointing aspect of the movie is the music by Ajay-Atul, that doesn’t add to the narrative. While the individual performances by Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are noteworthy, the rest of the cast just never comes together. Aamir is good with the physical comedy and banter, however an Aamir Khan film generally comes with mammoth expectations, so will the disappointment of this movie leave his fans high and dry and impact his brand value, only time will tell. Mr Bachchan pulls-off the heroics and the intense dialogues well, but the rest of the cast isn’t able to rally up any serious effort. Katrina Kaif is limited to two songs and a few lines of dialogue, while Fatima Sana Shaikh is left at the mercy of some badly choreographed action sequences.

Apart from the stray funny moments and consistently good visuals (thanks to decent CGI efforts), TOH doesn’t really have the punch or the thrill that is required to pull off a film of this scale. At 2 hours and 45 minutes, the film feels a little too long, blame it on weak editing. The grand canvas of the film does hold sway in terms of the visual experience, but at the end, this one is all show and shallow in substance. If you are expecting TOH to give you a dose of entertainment this festive season, this one will leave you all at sea.

    • “.. Mr Bachchan pulls-off the heroics and the intense dialogues well..” Like I said in my brief during interval yesterday, this movie is for original BigB fans, who can see him in his swansong action role. Here he does everything he did in his heydays, with convincing effect, suitably aided by great vfx. It is after very long (perhaps since Mard) his signature action foray. From the mid 1980s, his age started showing up, and limiting the effect of his physicality. All those under-performers after Shahenshah were primarily because at 45+ he couldnt pull off those 25-30 yr old characters. But here he is a 70+yr old playing a 70+yr old. All the gravitas, majesty, baritoned dialogs and action are rolled into the performance. People talk of Eklavya, but that was nowhere close to this. And it has to be experienced only on a big screen. IMHO, he is never going to ride a horse, or jump off from tall structures, or hit a punch and swing a sword again; at least not on a grand canvas like this one.

Having said that, there aren’t enough BigB fans to add 100crs to its BO!! So therefore, the disappointed Aamir fans can reject it en masse and leave it reeling.

“…an Aamir Khan film generally comes with mammoth expectations, so will the disappointment of this movie leave his fans high and dry and impact his brand value,..” So now they are going to write obituaries for Aamir’s brand value as well!

“..But the fact that the heroes of this tale are pirates, doesn’t quite fit into the Indian context, given that Indians never gained notoriety as pirates. ..” Blatant intellectual dishonesty. It seems the constant comparison to POC has confused this reviewer. Not once do they show them as pirates! All they do is steal a British ship which is used for war against the Brits. Pirates plundered and looted merchant vessels and ports, and lived off the loot (like they do in Somalia). In fact, neither are they pirates, nor thugs. The only thuggery is Aamir’s constant cheating.

  5. If folks want to see real honest person in such games, I’ll bring to you an incident of SS Rajamouli.

The producers of Magadheera are the biggest and most reputed ones in the Industry. SS Rajamouli made a movie for them and gave them the biggest blockbuster in Telugu film industry in Magadheera. It already was the biggest hit and still producers kept over reporting the collections and centers where it completed 100 days(as was the trend in Telugu film industry). He had told them, lets stop this game and stick to true collections as anyways our movie will become highest grosser. The producers didn’t care as they are veterans and still announced inflated figures. They had a grand function for 100 days. Guess what? SS Rajamouli skipped the event and said collections are inflated even though its the biggest grosser!

Well, that kind of honesty is rare in any industry of India!

    Like

    • Lol, you could have just put the video instead of own interpretation or picking up from whats written in media. It was from RK Open Heart interview.

The biggest turning point in the career of Rajamouli was Simhadri, his second film. It was a huge blockbuster and established him as a mass director. Unfortunately, the movie is remembered for the wrong reasons. It was dragged for 175 days to create a Silver Jubilee record in the state. It took over the entire narrative on the film and is what the film is always talked about. Rajamouli was not happy with that.

The same Simhadri scenario was getting repeated with Magadheera for 100 days and could have been avoided as the film was anyway a historical blockbuster, is what Rajamouli felt. There was no “over-reporting” or “inflation” in either collections or the centres, 20% of Hundred days centres were ‘dragged’ is what he said. Both Simhadri and MD are like lifetime records for direct silver jubilee and hundred days centres in TFI.

And there was no grand 100 days function for Magadheera. For such a historical success the makers were rather muted post the release of the movie. They did not even officially announce it was an Industry Hit (ATBB equivalent) until the director of the previous IH confirmed so. The only official number that was out was presented by Allu Sirish (son of the producer) on his blog, long after the film’s run was over.

the law of averages got to Aamir, finally
Talaash was a really good film, but was a disappointment to many
Dhoom 3 was a below average film, but kept earning millions
his first after Mangal Pandey that has got severe backlash and will ultimately lead to a disappointing total. But good news in disguise
Vijay Krishna Acharya needs to now realize that you cannot get away with a weak script just coz you have the countries biggest superstars at your disposal. Not everything can be a Dhoom 3
Aamir will hopefullget back to his modern day masala tropes so effectively utilized in films like PK, 3 idiots and Dangal
And we must not jump the gun in predicting crazy numbers just on the basis of a trailer and the presence of an actor who’s had successes before. Bias is a very powerful and, at the same time, a very negative aspect
No star is not fallable, and everyone can be at the mercy of the audience. A star or his fans’ overconfidence sometimes seals the fate.

  13. During Bagubali 2 release, I commented that no film will be able to break its records in forseeable future including TOH. TOH is really turning into a disaster and it takes a while for Amir to get over this failure. The wrath of the paying public is burning this picture in terms of collections. TOH failure is needed for Amir to do a course correction and take s break like Amitabh did and do some elderly character actor roles. If he were to do Mahabharath, he should not do Krishns at all. He suits well for Shakuni. He should rope in Salman for Dussasana and Sharukh for Shikhandi as all those characters are short in physical appearance and these 3 will perfectly fit into their roles.
The reviews coming in for TOH are hilarious and I don’t how this so called perfectionist Amir failed with his assesment. He proved that he is like any other.

He’s delivered the industry 5 ATG’s. No other Bollywood star in the period has done this. So get it all out. This is your moment to cherish.

Sunny Deol and Hrithik and SRK only. Even Salman hasn’t despite a hot streak. And by in large the major milestones are all his (Bahubali 2 withstanding). And compared to SRK and Salman he’ll have easily better films in this period.

        Like

      • You are replying for no reason. I meant Aamir won’t have another release in this decade and if we need to count his good movies, he’ll end up having 3 which is very small number and even 5 is less.

        Like

        • Well my point is simple. His 3 is better than the combined 20 years of efforts by SRK and Salman! Plus summarising his work like this is silly. He’s produced Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, produced and starred in Secret Superstar and Dhobi Ghat too.

          Like

      • Its funny how Fan is being compared to Thugs again n again. Its full on experimental movie and they messed it up but Fan or JHMS are not event movies like Race 3, Thugs or Tubelight. There’s a difference if you can’t figure out. Ra.One was an event film and you can see the backlash which can be compared with Thugs or Race 3.

        Like

        • I can replace Fan with any number of forgettable films. Ra.1, JTHJ, plenty of others. Again you protected SRK as usual. And I said this ‘period’…not decade. So start from Mela onwards. • So what happened to the deal between BOI and YRF overnight where they both decided to do massive manipulation for Thugs? BOi were always using their own data and they gave their estimates last night unforunately the actuals this morning came out lower. If Aamir wanted he could have easily inflated Dangal to 400 cr and Talaash to 100 but he isn’t into this sort of thing. As i said there are too many people who wants to see Aamir fail this time and they are not just on twitter but on this blog too.

            Like

          • I was open to a scandal as it’s quite possible. But it doesn’t seem like there is one here. I disapproved it with some basic maths anyway. 50Cr first day is possible and 30Cr day 2 too. I’m more suspicious of how BOI can go from 34 to 28 in few hours. And how some were aware a revision would happen. Why print articles you are not sure about. If you’re range is 32-34 Cr how credible can you be if you come in at 28 Cr? Many public companies would have huge selloffs based on this, with BOI they are congratulated!

But you are right with Talaash & Dangal close to milestones, if Aamir was like this, these 2 could have been pushed above 100 and 400 easily. And PK to 350Cr.

Unfortunately RCE and Filmkraft invest in flogging dead horses which is pretty stupid. Better to save the fraudulent activity for something big. If you’re going to cheat why steal a Tata car, surely a Ferrari no? Especially when you know you’ll be caught.

Now same jokers are happy with 28-30cr 2nd day and fighting for few cr here and there. They are saying hey Aamir just having fun, and now comparing thugs with crap like sultan, raone, fan. Great.
Next time you guys look down on others, just look at Aamirs last few movies, poor mans memento, B-grade horror movie, bad OMG copy with slapstick, SS zzz, Dhoom 3 which killed the franchise and Dangal. Basically 1 good/ok movie which is just a normal sport movie.

I have always said that Aamir’s body of work since Lagaan cannot be matched by anyone. Right from RDB, Ghajini, TZP, 3 Idiots. This was his best ever phase for me. Afterwards, PK, Talaash and Dangal were very good cinema as well.

But the only complaint I have from such huge talent is the lack of volume. Because with his model, he cannot afford to go wrong.

Dangal came out in 2016. Before that you have PK in 2014. Now TOH in 2018. He has nothing lined up.

His next release will most probably be in 2020. Which means in a span of 4 years, he delivers a dud (TOH) and an under-performer in a cameo (SS).

During that phase, Salman will most probably have delivered 4 blockbusters and 4 duds (going by his current form). Akshay will have delivered 12 100-120cr grossers. From Aamir, it is going to be 4 years of nothingness or under-performance.

With his model, he cannot afford to go wrong. Amitabh will probably have a social film lined up in 3 or 4 months time. He will move on easily. YRF will have another poor quality product lined up for release within weeks or months time. Katrina has a film lined up for release within weeks. But Aamir is the only one who has devoted full 2 years of his life on this dud. So, he is the biggest loser in this deal.

I have always said 1 year for a film is not asking for too much. 1 big film a year. He has done it at the times 3 Idiots/Ghajini or RDB/Fanaa.

If he continues at the rate a film every 2 years time, he cannot afford to go wrong. Because between Dangal in 2016 and his next release in maybe 2020, this is no doubt a lean spell. His audience and the those neutrals who love his cinema in India have been disappointed with SS and TOH. And it is 4 years and precious lifetime lost.

It is an important, socially-relevant film about domestic abuse. I wouldn’t compare it to a farce like Toilet, which really is a pile of garbage and a mouthpiece for the current government towards the end.

I haven’t seen Padman but I highly doubt even that film is close to SS.

          Like

          • YOU love SS. It’s your choice and your own opinion. I found it as a small movie made for MTV. I found it insignificant, not worth a watch on the big screen. For that matter, a film like Mirzya worked more for me. For me, it was a film deserved to be watched on the big screen. That’s my own opinion. But my opinion doesn’t matter.

The 62cr earned by SS for a wide release during Diwali time points towards very limited appreciation. The general core Indian audience’s verdict in India. This is what counts. So many small films with more limited release and no stars have performed so much better this year. itself

It’s not a dud. But an underwhelming performance at the BO. This is the core Indian audience verdict and this is what matters. They much preferred GA at that time.

Let’s not talk about the Box Office alone. Let’s look at the after life that both films enjoy. That is if you wish for this to be a sensible discussion in the first place.

          • Btw I was the lone ranger who stands by Secret Superstar’s release policy despite it getting mauled by Golmaal Returns. My justification is if a small film cannot stand up to a big one with Aamir as a banner which film can? Aamir was sane enough to realise on Day 2 that Golmaal Returns would lose out so screens were exchanged. In reality if SS had only 1,000 screens the film would have been overwhelmed and forgotten like so many films do. If he can’t do or attempt this then who can? Nothing was lost in the end, maybe 3-4 crores for GR on Day 1 and SS gained 1-2 crores more. He chanced it and he’s one of the very few who could have the clout to make it happen.

The China business ultimately vindicated his own judgement on his film.

Obviously I’m aware the first choice was GR and it’s fine. This doesn’t mean SS is a TV movie. Again China massively proves the opposite.

And smaller films can take confidence from such bravery or stupidity (whichever you believe). Bottom line a 15-20Cr film did 62Cr business. It’s not bad at all. Aamir would take that now than go through this TOH Tamasha.

          • The films that have done better this year are light-hearted movies. None of them carry a dark streak about them. Comparing Badhai Ho to SS is false economy.

Even in Andhadhun or Stree, the comedy element is quite powerful. It’s certainly not an apples to apples comparison.

Secret Superstar is a serious film that takes its content seriously. I don’t think it’s flawless by any means but compared to other commercial films, it’s more of a dampener mood-wise at least.

It’s like comparing a Hirani film to an Anurag Kashyap film. Obviously the former will win the battle at the box office, even if it’s not a better film per se.

            Like

          • If it was TZP it would have been fine as a clash as it’s an uplifting movie. SS is quite dark, grim and not fair to compare to Badhaai Ho, which I saw last week and is an out and out laugh riot. Maybe it can be compared to Raazi or something like that.

Cinema is a business. Aamir as a producer must use his muscle & clout to get screens. He actually exchanged on Day 2 after realising GR was kicking SS all-over, so he’s not stupid.

            Like

        • I can’t speak for others but I’m fine with Aamir’s model. 1 every 2 years is too long but 12-18 months is fine. If it doesn’t work he loses but if it works you get better films. That’s the only game in town IMO.

So taking Salman for example – yes a very big superstar, 8-9 big openings in a row but probably 2 films that are comparable to Aamir’s. Bajrangi Bhaijaan and possibly Sultan (by popular demand, I haven’t seen it). I hold my hands up on Akshay’s career for last 5 years, I’ve only watched 2-3 films and missed a bunch as I don’t find him interesting at all.

And if its about box office than I will draw a line and say it interests me to the extent that I like numbers and only when the big films come or small films do well. Salman delivers more revenue, so does Akshay but it’s not the game in town that interests me most.

5 of those movies you listed turned out to be ATGs, and 2 of them smashed records in China. A holiday release and 2 yr gap cannot just propel movies to such collections. Period! Enough number of Holiday Release disasters have lined up in the last 2 decades. TOH will only add to that list.

Doesnt Sallu and SRK follow this though on a lower limit? They used to do 2-3movies/year, then suddenly just 1movie/y and that too on holidays. Thats the only reason they are still relevant. Look what happend when they tried 2movies/y again, their average fell hard, from usually 200+ to just 140 and less. Now they are back to just 1/y.
Yes China is the yardstick for great movies, they love classics like Transformers and Fast Furious.

It takes a certain amount of honesty from Aamir fans to even call out ToH as a bad film. I certainly don’t recall a single SRK, Sallu or Akki fan calling out their favourite star’s films. How many SRK fans were around when JHMS wrapped up within one weekend? How many were even willing to call Ra.1 a misfire?

In fact, apart from Aamir, there isn’t a single star whose films have appealed to the critics as well as the masses. There simply isn’t anyone else.

And it takes some amount of cheek to make fun of PK, Ghajini or even Secret Superstar when your own favourite is busy making films like JHMS Raees, Fan or Dilwale!

All those movies I mentioned are not really that good if you compare with other foreign movies and if the viewer is neutral. Can you imagine showing Ghajini to a neutral person who doesnt watch hindi movies regularly? He would prob walk out in 10min.
A good movie is a good movie irrespective of who is watching it. Khakee for instance is a great underrated movie, acc to me.

          • Foreign movies? Why shouldn’t we compare Aamir’s films to global classics while we are at it?

And the very fact that you mention foreign films itself puts Aamir at a higher pedestal than others, you do realize that, don’t you? Or do you compare SRK’s films to foreign cinema as well?

I am quite ‘neutral’ having sat through cinema from across the globe — from Tarkovsky to Godard to Truffaut to Bergman to Kurosawa and yes, our own Satyajit Ray. This is not to brag, but yeah, I know a bit about foreign cinema — not just Hollywood.

I agree Khakee is a great masala film. I absolutely love it but I also love Ghajini — it is unabashedly masala, but it’s also a very emotional love story. How can one not be moved by it? Even the songs in Ghajini are tastefully done — every single one of them, except for the Jiah Khan number.

  26. Every actor goes through phases in his career. Sharukh had his zenith, Salman had his zenith and Aamirr had his zenith.
Quality of a movie is in the eye of the beholder. Mass circuits think Salman is more than Sharukh and Aamir, for those who like romantic stuff Sharukh is more than Aamir and Salman and those who prefer experimental cinema with perfect script sense Aamir is better than Salman and Sharukh.
Men also, I feel, go through Male Menopause Trauma(MMT) at which point they may not be prudent enough to judge whatever best they do. Aamir’s choice of TOH may be the result of that. Salman and Sharukh had already gone through multiple times earlier. Now is the turn of Aamir to suffer that.
If a movie is Crap then we will call it a Crap only. Even if TOH does 200 crores then also it is a Crap. Money comes by due stat power for couple of days, later content is King. That’s why Baahubali is such an event film in India as with no recognizable stars and dubbed version it was able to erase all the records of established stars as it relied on content.

  27. Mild Spoiler alert

Thugs of Hindostan (TOH), irrespective of whether it goes down as a money-maker or a dud, will for sure go down as one of the films that divided the critics/audiencesas though one were witnessing an Indo-Pak partition again. An audiences that have grown up on the masala traditions/tropes, and even more so, those who have grown up listening to those stories that one heard from one’s grand-parents as a kid of poetic justice, is bound to like this film; if not love it. More than anything, I was pleasantly surprised that Victor managed to get his bearings almost right and understood and presented the ’70s and ’80s cinema for what it actually represented.

TOH is a simple enough story of rebels versus the Company; of a stoic metaphorical figure (Amitabh Bachchan) representing freedom; of a turncoat using one’s wittiness to slither toward riches in life and then toward a cause, and more importantly, of achieving poetic justice that is beyond the self’s life or death, all moulded within the masala tropes with the respect this radition of story-telling of the Hindi films of yore command, not demand.

More than anything, this  is a very good tribute to the man who heralded and soared to unconquerable heights in this tradition, Amitabh Bachchan. Both Victor and Aamir have utmost respect toward Amitabh and they show it, sometimes subtly, mostly unabashedly. There is an Allah-Rakha-esqe falcon as in Coolie–heck, there’s even a throw-back to Oberoi’s cool sun-glasses–that protects the rebels here and swoops around whenever Amitabh’s character and/or his gang is on screen; there’s a great tribute to Amitabh’s refusal to pay हफ़्ता from Deewar with Aamir’s introduction shot[very smartly, Victor/Aamir include a sub-tribute to Lagaan via the tax back-drop that’s used as Aamir’s introduction scene here]; there’s Amitabh’s Bhagwan Dada-inspired steps in the Vashamalle song, there’s Amitabh in shackles as in Kaalia; there’s Amitabh singing a lullaby to Fatima, and of course, there’s his name itself – two of them in fact; Khudabaksh and Aazad.

Aamir salutes him in the first scene, and Aamir again does that in one of the pre-climactic scenes — symbolically signifying and accepting that this is what we loved about his films when we were kids; and this is what inspired the masala tradition– where he tries to fall at his feet but then Amitabh asks him to hug instead. The film is sparkled with many such homages and it’s a delight to spot, see, and enjoy them.

Needlessly to say, with less screen-time but with the most impact, in all probability, with Bachchan’s last outing in his masala avatar, this is a treat. And this is indeed a fine homage. This isn’t the ‘Buddha Hoga Tera Baap’ collection of scenes from Amitabh Bachchan’s films’ collected as post-stamps passing off as a homage; it’s a very true, sincere, and from the heart reverence to the story-telling in this format and what Amitabh meant to that format. It’s simply thrilling when Bachchan speaks and espouses freedom with the dignity and aura which inspires followers and makes each one of them leaders. His introduction scene is an ultimate ode to his grand entry from the ’70s and ’80s flicks.

Aamir is truly enjoying this outing, and stays within the ambit of the movie-style, rarely getting trapped delivering a false note, except for the Chaplin-esque idiocy during the सुराय्या मेरी जान song. Katrina is wasted but she dances brilliantly and has oomph and lightning rising through the screen uptil the theater roof [having a lightning rod on the theater roof-tops might be a good idea]. Her dialog-delivery is flat as usual and unfortunately, the British generals speak better Hindi than her. Fatima has a small role but has delivered accurately.

The action scenes and battles on the ship are very well-staged in slow-motion–which was the bane of Dhoom 3–are used very smartly here to convey the energy required and to be savored by the audience. Boarding onto the enemy ships by ropes, by ladders, and the usage of a ship’s props in the action sequences are finely used. Frankly, they are on par with the Babhubali action scenes, and in scenes, actually better: At least, they look better on screen.

The songs — there are 3 of them — are a big let-down; only the VASHAMALLE song is short but effective. The 2nd song, Vashamalle is way better.

The first half flows like a breeze. It is the 2nd half where Aamir’s chameleonic act/role gets a bit comedic, monotonous and out-of-sync when it comes to the totality of the movie. His flip-flops get a little monotonous. But the face-off moments between them are superb.

If you don’t understand — don’t want to understand/see– that Bahubali is Chandamama, while TOH is pure Hindi cinema masala, then think twice before watching this movie. And if rather than enjoying the wholesome poetic justice and flow that the film provides, you are going to focus on how Fatima’s eye-brow scar keeps changing its size, then stay at home and watch, as Box Office India puts it, European cinema. Holistic, over-arching emotional crests and troughs are the hall-marks of masala cinema, and if you don’t enjoy this form of story-telling and movie-watching, well, stay home and watch…whatever. If the navarasas  from Natya Shastra, are not neither your cup of coffee or tea, please rop this.

But if not, this movie is a fun ride.

And no, Aamir hasn’t lost it. He’s much smarter than we are. And if we are not as emotional as him, then it’s our mistake, not his.

itna discussion hum agar andhadhun jaisi filmo pe kar lete to Satyamshot pe ek critical culture develop ho jata which is encouraging for good cinema of its kind

AnJo I respect your opinions and it is precisely for this reason that I have somewhat overlooked the weaknesses in plot. but to excuse the non-existent storyline in the name of “homage” to masala or whatever is being unfair to tens of other better-executed and much well-written films who are vying for our attention. But they do not warrant discussion of any kind on this blog except two-three people who catch them early. Andhadhun, except Saket and I and a couple of others had no discussion whatsoever except how it trended very well and how it is a game changer for Ayushmann et al.

Imagine if TOH were made on a lesser scale with lesser stars. it wouldnt have garnered any discussion at all. A washout from day 1 itself. but lesser stars and directors with limited effort cannot get away with such storytelling (as someone mentioned earlier). Masala itself is an overused term here: while I appreciate the fun that comes along with it, it signifies the death of art and innovation in filmmaking, and I doubt if it is carrying forward cinema in the right direction. because with masala we do not just talk of crowdpleasing cinema that in an obvious way appeals to the senses. Masala also comes complemented with the tradition of having bigger stars ruling the proceedings, which is the death of revolutionary storytelling.

Right? in TOH, AB/Aamir/KK/FS/Clive all deliver their best – and lift the otherwise one-line story line to great heights….but when the treatment from director is just not passable, how much more u expect? still it is an enjoyable watch and that is what AnJo has put very nicely – something which even if I wished could not pen down….

  35. Thugs of Hindostan

Prior to Dhoom 3, the post-Lagaan Aamir Khan seemed unfalterable, but after conning his fans with ‘this is the best script of my career’ in reference to Dhoom 3 promotions, one must have tempered expectations even when watching Aamir’s films. And low expectations are probably what helped me to enjoy his latest offering (my first foray to the cinema in several months).

There is nothing memorable about the film: the performances are tolerable (thankfully Katrina isn’t expected to do more than a few frenetic twists, Aamir and Amitabh plod along in roles that add nothing to their ouvre, but it is Fatima who really seems ill at ease), the plot (with forgivable holes) is twisty but predictable, the dialogues are never applaudable, and the songs are dreadful (some have compared this film to Manoj Kumar’s Kranti but at least that offered us Lata’s immortal Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi…Pyar Karle Ghadi Do Ghadi).

There have been comparisons to Pirates of the Caribbean but the initial portions and climax rather made me think of Bahubali, whose ‘epic’ success perhaps there was some effort to replicate, but TOH is no more than a pale wannabe.

But inspite of all the above, Thugs of Hindostan was not unwatchable, but actually a relatively fun few hours (the duration is just under the three hour mark) though I’m struggling to type out anything particularly positive or redeeming. The fact that we saw it in IMAX, had free tickets (with accompanying free popcorn and drinks!) probably helped – certainly I would have had no patience for seeing this at home. But I’m not sure the film deserves the scathing reviews it has garnered (probably owing to the unavoidable expectations raised with the coming together of Amitabh and Aamir). But some of us have long accepted that we were simply not born in an era of good films…so back to the DVD player.

“Top star, give a frank response. If you find a lizard inside a packed food product that has all certifications, will you throw it away or consume it saying it has the required certifications,” it said.

It asked the veteran star to “advise” the film’s director, AR Murugadoss, and not defend “a mistake” by showing the censor certificate.

Even if a “misinformation” in a film passed the censor test, it “has to be stopped”, it said in an apparent defence of the protests against the scenes and the demand for their removal.

I have not seen TOH so can’t comment on if it’s good or bad; but as i had stated earlier (and of course some of the aamir jumped on me for no reason), I would love to see aamir in a movie with aamir being aamir. Enough of this using prop, be it either low haircut, or too much hair, or growing mustach or putting on weight, etc…

Take a cue from bachchan, he didn’t need to have all these getups to stand out. I understand for film like TOH, where you need certain look but you don’t need to work on your hair for most of the films. Role doesn’t demand it.

I would love to see him back to the way he looked in QSQT, sarfarosh, etc… that pure, inoccent look.

What difference would it have made if she had watched the movie, hated it, and said dont’ watch it? I am just trying to understand her motivation. A ‘strong’, ‘independent’ woman after the great #mine too movement saying, oh I am so scared I am in a theater where they are showing a PG-13 movie, not a seedy theater, but what if 5 Shakti Kapoors come at me? The movie is weighed down by the expectations from Bachchan to do what he could do in his sleep in his heyday but here he looks and feels tired.
The second half of course was all WTH and if the movie had ended at the interval point , It would have been a much better movie. Agree with Idea that this movie would have been better off with a different director. Prabhu Deva should be banned from choreography for ever and of course so should VKA .

It should at least touch 200 crores or so. Even the most rejected films make 4 times the opening day figures. That puts it easily above 200 Crores.

          • “That’s an extreme outlier. It dropped 67% on its second day. Clearly that hasn’t happened to ToH. So, what conclusions can one draw?”

As I said, its not easy to explain in few words for people who don’t want to understand it. Besharam released on National Holiday Oct 2 on Wednesday. It was not festive release. Then next day Thu is regular working day, so the drop will be much higher. Thugs is on festive release and even 2nd day is holiday most of the places. Even regular working day, ppl will take off as its festival times. Its not Gandhi Jayanti or some other kinda holiday. There’s lot of difference.

Besharam had 5 day weekend. Released on Wed, then Thu, Fri and again had Sat/Sun. Still it couldn’t recover and even Sunday was in single digits after almost 20 crs on Wednesday.

          • Please try harder next time. And stop this condescending tone.

Friday was only a partial holiday for ToH as well. It wasn’t a holiday everywhere.

And if you understood numbers as you claim to, perhaps you’d know/understand that Besharam dropped 67% off a 21 crore number whereas ToH dropped 40% off a HISTORIC 50 crore number. There is no way ToH dropped like Besharam, even taking into account a partial holiday.

Since you have a massive bias or an agenda to boot, you don’t even wish to admit that the numbers being posted around don’t add up.

  47. I had posted some months back about clubbing all Aamir fans or clubbing all SRK fans or Salman fans or Akshay fans as one group. If suddenly Aamir delivers a flop, the initial reaction is ‘ we Aamir fans.. ‘ we are classy, sympathetic and very high taste and we don’t encourage sub-par product, etc. The whole argument is silly. Even for SRK, one fan can be a uneducated rickshaw driver, another can be CEO of a company. You can’t club both of them in same place. I had mentioned that folks who are good for nothing just join Aamir khan fan club and just try to pass themselves as more intelligent than they are. Its easy to ride on the bandwagon on the top start currently and looking down on other stars and their fans. The more secure fans are the ones who don’t switch sides. There was a Hrithik fan and he should be proud to be one irrespective of the flops he had. Similarly, Naveen sticking to Akshay has nothing to do with intelligence or taste. He’s better and more intelligent than some dumb fellow claiming to be Aamir fan and tagging all bigger/senior Aamir fans all over the net.

I’ve mentioned multiple times. For me a favourite is when that actor connects on screen. I like Srk and Big B and many others. They may do multiple bad films, occasionally bad performances, etc but when they connect or give a good performance that connect is way beyond any other actor, that’s how the favorite is defined for me. If there’s a best performance or SRK vs another one’s best perf, I would prefer to watch SRK on screen. Similarly, Aamir is easily the best star to give great movies but it has nothing to do with his being a fan or not. If the movie is good(which it has been always in recent times), there is no way in hell I’ll miss that on big screen. He does give good to great performances on and off but its never connects to me at individual level and its too manipulative and method and calculated performance. It is great performance as per book and critic but there’s no connection and I can’t lie to myself. If that connect was there, he would have been my fav actor and not SRK. Likewise, everyone has their individual connect to watch an actor on screen irrespective of the quality of movies delivered.

There is always 2 sides – You need to first love movies and that’s superset and in that we have favorites which are subsets All star and actors and movies come under that superstar. Srk’s movies is just a subset in the big superset of the movies I watch. I watch any good movie out there and some bad ones as well just out of my curiousity. I might miss other star movies but I don’t miss out any of the top 3 khans or Hrithik movies on big screen for any of their releases. I don’t miss any small movies which are very well reviewed and appreciated. But some fans are just living in the subset of their star and think that’s the whole universe. They don’t even care movies as much as much they care for the star alone. For them the day starts and ends with their star. For them the star is their superset and every other star is not even in that superset. I just find it pathetic life when I see that happen.

Its not about movies. People don’t care about cricket will die for Sachin or Virat Kohli and claim he’s greatest cricketer of all time. I ask, do you know stats or follow any old cricketers. They say they don’t follow cricket much but just huge fan of Sachin or Kohli (as they appear to be in the news of being in top position). I see many Aamir fans such category. I don’t see Akshay or Salman or SRK fans in that category.

Am done with my post. Phew!

In addition we are grateful you have supported the small films that get good reviews and it’s a truly humbling lesson you have taught us with this post.

But basically I can see through this facade or halo you want around yourself as some amazing psychologist of human behaviour. It seems you are the only one along with non Aamir fans that loves movies. What a highly generalistic classification, the very thing your whole drivel is about. Thankgod for small mercies like reviews that allow the human public to choose which film to watch. Otherwise if we were all robots like you and names you mentioned we’d be signing up to Rahul version 1000 or Salman’s Tubelight every 6 months.

I just want to watch good movies. If you like the Salman or SRK or Hrithik ones you watch, write about them and point out the great things we are missing in the likes of Kites, Tubelight, Jai Ho, Dilwale, Ra1, Mohenjo-Daro, Agneepath etc. You have plenty to judge us on so talk about these movies instead of your useless lectures like a teacher of cinema. That includes huge flops and duds like Mohenjodaro, Shivaay, Mirzya, Tevar, Force 2 or even smaller hits like Mardaani etc. Either ways, if that didn’t convince anyone, I see no reason it would anytime in future. So, what you said I’ve already done it.

You basically are saying you watch everything and we don’t. ‘That’ gives you ‘more’ and it gives us ‘less’ or whatever. It’s just plain pompous. You can list every film you wrote reviews for, it further enhances the point. The fact you are ‘listing’ it says it anyway. Like some kind of self congratulory tap on the shoulder for oneself. I don’t have the same kind of obsession you have or motivation for cinema. I don’t ‘need’ to sit through trash to be at your level.

Ps. I don’t have sour grapes for such things. I’ve seen the movie and anyone with reasonable bandwidth can *read* I’ve not liked it for 2 days. I’ve said where it is headed. And it deserves it. I don’t need to be sour by this. Don’t confuse sour with disappointed.

He did the same thing when dhobi ghat fell hard on day second and was on the verge of flopping. He announced dhoom 3 then to deflect attention. If a film is performing well, he tends to throw a few parties and gives half a dozen interview. He’s not the kind to just move on. So this deflection is an acknowledgment of the film’s failure and a sly move to take away some attention from it.

I think there is much more expected from Aamir compared to others, specially when he invest 2 years in a big budget movie. There is far bigger gap in expectation vs result in case of TOH compared to Race 3 etc. I think Dangal increased this gap … which was a really serious movie without any regular bollywood thing.

All his fans expect ATG from him now. I think it is better to go back to low profile again for him and give us more movies like RDB, TZP, etc

I would prefer him to produce all his movies himself now. He is much better at controlling budget, script changes, reshooting etc

These 3 top stars should give way for the newer generation graciously. It will be painful to watch these 3 stalwarts dishing out one dud after another from their zenith. What kind of logic is that I wasn’t around during HNY so I should not comment now? That’s freaking 4 years back. I guess those rumors before the film about Aamir being nervous as hell and not believing the film didn’t meet his expectations came out to be true. I hope there will be some self-reflection from Aamir…let’s see what his next project offers his fans. I was planning watching the film in London on Thanksgiving weekend trip…but not sure now…maybe will wait until online stream couple months.

Movie had sub par plot and no fluidity in terms of screenplay/editing. Some scenes were executed well but again, with no proper links between one scene to another. No soul to the movie. Dont think anyone even cared or connected with Zafira, to actually be interested in her revenge saga.

Aamir should have known better. Big B picks any script under the sun, so he probably has no clue to differentiate between good/bad. If there was anyone’s reputation at stake here, it was Aamir’s.

Stay away from YRF and likes of Viktors in future. So sad to see the response that ToH and how sorry its BO seems.

  55. Thugs Of Hindostan Goes Down Further On Day 3
    Sunday 11 November 2018 01.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan took another hit on Saturday with collections in the 22.5-23 crore nett range. The drop is in the region of 15-20% and it has taken its three day total to 100 crore nett plus. The three day weekend is in the same range as Race 3 but that film had first day falling on pre Eid.

The film is just about the first day where it smashed almost very record in the book but since then the downfall has been rapid. It reminds one of the 1996 film Trimurti which also did the same but went down fast. The film may well show a further drop on Sunday.

The film has not only had a ditto 3 day weekend as Race 3 across India but the collection break up is almost ditto which is sheer coincidence. If we look at the three main chains of PVR, Inox and Cinepolis and this is were bulk of the high ends are. Race 3 grossed 34.80 crore nett in these chains in 3 days and Thugs of Hindostan has done 34.25 crore apprx from the same three chains.

Another coincidence is the single screen business of the two is same over the first three days. Thugs Of Hindustan is 29.50 crore nett apprx and Race 3 was 29.05 crore nett. The edge here is that Thugs of Hindustan got the big holiday on day one when single screens are mad and the second day also where again single screens remain at high levels. Race 3 was pre eid so missed out on single screen business on day one at many places otherwise it would have been better in single screens despite Thugs Of Hindustan having the better date.

The all India business of the two is same give or take a few lakhs and the break up of multiplexes to single screens is also the same.

I hope he doesn’t try make this one some sort of classic/cult/iconic film too 🙂

For me, only movie that really made me feel like how I did back in 70s movies is Rowdy Rathore and Dabaang. A movie with decent story, good action, very good songs and a hero who acts “mardana”. As you walk out the dark cinema hall, you want to be like that hero. You dream about being like that hero.

If you are referring to me, I did not. You can take my name. Again, if you are not referring to me, please ignore any comment hereon. I do hope you understood my review: Because nowhere have I called this film a cult or an iconic film. I use terms very carefully — including words like pogroms, genocide, lynching, and ‘superstars.’

Firstly, I do not know if you even saw the film. I am open to whatever questions you have with regard to what I felt if you have seen it.

With regard to your statement that this is as good as the masala films of  ’70s and ’80s masala, it is completely wrong. I meant for the most part, this film got most of those registers right; especially the masala of films like Coolie, Mr. Natwarlaal, Mard, Desh Premee, etc.,

I was very skeptical of watching this ever since I — in fact, I think all Aamir fans — realized that he had again agreed to work with Victor. The trailer had interested me, but with the shocking 0.5 ratings — a 0.5 or 1 rating for me means you walk out of the theater mid-way or start looking at their mobile — I had decided to stay away. I thought this was a mis-fire of truly epic proportions. Only after Nykavi’s feed-back did I decide to watch this film. With Marcus’s history and disdain for masala, I though the was just pulling our legs, or worse, single-handedly trying to salvage a botched attempt :). But Victor really surprised me here; and I meant only in comparision to his previous outings. [I normally don’t write on films that are out and out bad. I think the harshest review I have ever written which, to me, was the worst for DHOOM 3 and it was on this blog. I can’t search for it now {it’s difficult searching for comments on this blog}  but it was in the comments section. I love films which are interesting; they need not be great. FAN was brilliant till the interval and then it just segued into a poor man’s copy with the thriller element. RAEES was striking all the right notes — with a terrific trailer to boot– but by the time the film-maker began glorifying Abdul Lateef, using masala tropes of ‘peeth pe gooli mat maar’, I lost interest. However, there is no way I would give these 2 films ]

My writings are my reactions, that’s all; not reviews. I am not qualified to write reviews. And my reactions are just a ratio of what the movie set out to do versus what it achieved. That’s the only parameter. Any other audience might go with a different expectation, maybe they want to have a rollicking time from start to end; maybe they just do not have any respect or interest for the movies from ’70s or ’80s. [For example, in my case, if someone were to say that there’s a film coming out that pays tribute to the ’60s, I would run miles away. I hate that Rajendra Kumar decade, even though there were some gems by the likes of Vijay Anand, etc.]  Yes, with Amitabh-Aamir combo, of course the expectations rise and the makers and Aamir could have been more responsible with the second half and could have worked harder on it.  If they really wanted to make it a fantastically memorable experience, they could have maybe hired someone of the caliber of Rajamouli. But we all know that YRF always aims at the low-hanging fruit.

This is how Vitor makes his films. He is a type of director who makes massy films and masses are liking this one as well but the Mount Everest level of negativity is killing the film. If i am not wrong this negativity was started before release of the film on social media. The reason being Yash Raj film’s arrogance/ wrong strategy. First they hardly promoted this film on media platforms after projecting it as biggest in Hindi market which irked media . Second they avoided special screening for media and other concerned which irked all trade journalists and most of them wrote reviews before seeing the film. Third they edited Bachchan’s role to a large extent which irked his fans who also went negative about the film and only praised Bachchan’s part in the film which in reality was praiseworthy.

        • Krish it’s a bit untrue. You only need to follow the #thugsofhindostan Twitter handle to know ‘during’ the first show, bad reviews were coming out minute by minute. This is my first experience of following Twitter like this. I’d already pre booked tickets.
I knew I was walking into a disaster the moment many such feedbacks were out. The film was gone from first show. Hardly a single positive response.

Then I watched it. I wrote at halftime that it’s quite fun (my fault, should have watched it all before commenting but felt a possible witch hunt at play). By the end of the film the general public reviews I can identify with. I can always accept a ‘scathable’ element for any major star. But this was always a unique film like Mohabbatein or K3G. They come once in a lifetime. The size of the overall resentment here is catastrophic and anyone’s scathing should be taken seriously. It’s an epic failure and yes Aamir (I mention his name first as he tends to be mentioned when it goes right) deserves a fair whack of the criticism. I even said this to Satyam and it was somewhere in my initial feedback comments. I’m not going extreme like many online elements. But naturally we have a lot more new bloggers and older ones returning to enjoy the wake!

I don’t buy that for a second. There is definitely some foul play involved here.

          • It proves the obvious. Most people turn up for Aamir, all fans are disappointed. With Race 3, who out of other than Salman fans turn up first 3 days? This is also to a point Master made.

TOH like Master said, the bigger they are the harder they fall. Psychologically the people who watch TOH are fans across the board. I haven’t watched a Salman film in cinema since PRDP. I’m no Master to watch every film around. I don’t have this choice or time in my life. Even if I did I’ve got better things to do then to watch Tubelight or Race 3. With Aamir, it’s different. Master already proved this. If you compare him and me. He watches all 4 stars. I cherry pick all 4, but will watch Aamir. So you extrapolate us (very crude as it’s only 2 people but I assure you even on this blog there is indicative nature of this) you realise a greater % of non Aamir fans watch TOH till now and a greater % of Salman fans watch Race 3 till now.

It feeds 2 outcomes. Salman is a bigger star and Aamir is a bigger overall composite star. The flack for the latter is greater as everyone in the system is disappointed. The former mostly Salman fans are because mostly it is only them that turned up!

I have a hard time buying the argument that Race 3 did not completely crash after its first day. Even Rajnikant, with all his mega following, can’t guarantee this type of trending for an outright poor product.

There is blatant box office manipulation going on in this industry and this has happened for a long, long time. But this selective bias against some stars is what gets my goat.

            Like

          • I agree. It’s multipled here but it’s obvious why. TOH is anyday a much bigger film than Race 3. The fact that new fans have turned up to the blog just for the sake of bragging proves this. In fact in a sick way it’s a compliment! It’s like that thappad Big B gave to Hrithik in K3G. It proved his love for SRK! Here the new joiners are just proving the same. They watch Aamir films expecting more than their own favourite star! We do too! I can’t think of a better compliment. Nearly 2 decades of angst is coming out right now from very extreme quarters. Normal fans trash a film – they don’t suddenly arrive, set up ID’s to do the same. Unless they had such ID’s for years but didn’t comment as they had nothing to cheer for.

Just 6 weeks ago we had a SRK World Cup – these ‘fans’ were silent then but are here cheering the losses of TOH! In fact so called ‘haters’ like Satyam, Qalander and I (others too) played a freaking SRK World Cup! If these people turned up, if only, we’d have had a ball with KKHH Vs K3G final!

There was negativity around the time of PK as well but it went on to smash all records. I think people should just accept, that in general this movie isn’t being liked so much by people out there.

3 days b4 release I had posted that this is an aamir movie with absolutely no buzz..at that time people were discussing if bahubali record will be safe or not..ofcourse the movie can still be great but the fact that there was no press shows was a big indicator of what followed..the only sad part is we need to wait again for 2 years for another aamir movie and that’s a long wait.

The no buzz is a good point. I saw it FDFS and in an audi of 450 people, it had about 40% occupancy. Whereas a Bajirao Mastani, Sultan, PK have all been full. Even a Badhaai Ho was almost full. And here ticket rates were not higher… 150 for a morning show. I think the music really hurt the buzz.

Because you said ‘whatever that means’ I am ‘explaining’ to you.

It means, that Aamir knows what’s the kind of ‘investment’ required when one works in a masala film. There are vast sections of today’s audience — especially the ‘cool’ younger generation — who have a snobbish attitude toward the film-making style of yore..Aamir doesn’t. I had posted a comment about the Amitabh-Aamir fight where he had spoken irresponsibly about Amitabh’s fans coming out of theaters and acting as goons: That was one of the idiotic statements ever made by him but I also said that it was something he said at that time and maybe, he has evolved over the years with a greater understanding of how cinema works and Amitabh’s career trajectory.

He has shown more ’emotional’ interest in the masala trope than many in the audience and that has worked in this film. It reflects in his performance. If he didn’t believe in the masala world, it wouldn’t be the case. You can trace an actor’s insincerity somewhere if he’s not interested and doing it just for name-sake or the cash.

Hopefully I am clear; else, I will leave it at that.

Some of positive views here don’t represent the overall opinion. You take any outside metric, IMDb/BMS/average of Indian critics/whatever, this film is scoring very low – maybe 1.5/5 on average and once you identify that score with the people involved here in the film + higher ticket prices – people will be absolutely right if they want to, to kill this film.

I did not see this coming – people can jump on me and say it was in the trailer (whatever). But I’ve accepted the fate. The numbers are just going to represent this overall opinion. Any number of words can be used; debacle, disappointing, disaster, horrific, carnage… whatever. For me I’m pretty disturbed in the end. And shocked that a seasoned pro like Aamir couldn’t translate the script onto screen. There is nothing surprising about VKA’s failure. But Aamir signing his hackjob again does hurt Aamir’s credibility a lot.

Again the film is not the worst ever, there are some improvements from VKA over D3. I prefer TOH to D3 ( I think) but it’s like choosing to being eaten by a lion or tiger. It’s just not a choice I want to make!

2 years was not a complete waste though. Apart from the fact that the movie is enjoyable, this one needed time to be made due to its scale (building ships, vfx and all that jazz). Maybe this experience will help him when he does his own stuff on such a scale (the scale of lagaan, tzp, dangal, etc were a lot smaller).

Current rumors suggest he will be make a 7-part MB web-series next, so maybe it will all add up in future. Its a great move since we are at the cusp of moving into digital entertainment space in a massive scale in India.

Satyam’s view on this will probably in line with Jay and Saket. NyKavi has loved Bachchan in this and I think this is Aamir’s best role in a long time. Not sure if any of these 2 characters will resonate so much with Satyam or Q …

    • And lets get to some basic maths (which trolls cant understand).

Addatoday had 43% avg occupancy on Day 2 and collections were 29 cr. Same site has 35% avg occupancy over Day 3, which is 7% less than day 2. So if ticket prices are same, their day 3 extrapolation shud be 0.93*29 = 27 cr. Now plex prices (i have personally checked this) are 15% more on Sat compared to Fri. So extrapolation becomes 27*1.15 = 31 cr.

However, addatoday has given a projection of 23-25 cr on Day 3. Why? How did they get to that projection? Is it based on their own tracking (but that cant be justified as above calculations show).

Now if producer figure comes out 30-31 cr for Day 3, then its consistent with whatever data sample that addatoday has tracked through last two days.

Jay, Munna – Any comments on this?

      Like

      • Now BOI may have additional data from single screens where it may have dropped a lot more than what addatoday’s plex samples are reflecting. So their projections of 23-25 cr may be closer to truth (we dont know their data or methodology due to lack of transparency).

But can Jay or Munna please justify how Addatoday got to the same 23-25cr projection on day 3 based on their own tracking?

I find this quite interesting …

        • Here is something more interesting …

Check out the occupancy data in the link below over day 2 and day 3. Day 2 average occupancy through out the day was 38.6% and for Day 3 it is 34.6 %. That is a marginal drop.

According to this data day 3 occupancy is 94% of Day 2 (this is indeed consistent with addatoday’s occupancy data!) I think there is an overlap of samples here.

Anyways, both sets of occupancy data suggests day 3 is 27 cr range with Friday’s ticket prices. Considering hike in ticket prices (roughly 15%) it will be in 30-31 cr range.

          So whats going on ??!!

      • the maths is not right..if 43 percent is 29 then capacity is 67..then 35 percent of 67 will be 23 for day 3..

        • Haha … If 38.6% occupancy is 29 cr, then 100% occupancy is 75 cr on Friday by simple math (no rocket science!). Thursday/Sat pricing is 15% higher, so potential was in the range of 85 cr.

          • I was referring to first comment..the maths is wrong..you cannot remove 7 percent from.43 to get 35 (its different matter altogether than removing 7 from 43 doesnt get you 35, you need to remove 8 for that)..either ways the 43 percent is on overall capacity..if 43 percent of something is 29 crs then that something is 67cr..and 35 percent of 67 cr is 23cr…there you go fixed it for you

These are sample data and just averages, 1-2% means nothing. Other data set i posted has 38% ‘average’ occupancy. We will get into stats to explain you further details. But for your limited processing power, these data sets do not support 23-25 cr day 3 total. Its that simple.

Have to agree with one thing that social media, though not the originator of felling TOH, has definitely added a 1000 more quick cuts and bled the movie to death. Like that idiotic tweet by Suchitra Krishnamoorthy. On this blog itself, Satyam and myself were in 2 minds whether to even watch it once! Satyam infact canceled his tickets I believe.

Today, when people are wiping their ass with one hand and with the other tweeting, with attention span being so short, isn’t it but true that they can affect a movie’s prospects hugely? Based sorely on these tweets, another team in my company – around 25 members were all gung-ho about watching TOH but as soon as the memes and forwards started coming onto the whatsapp group, they immediately changed their mind and decide to watch, OVERLORD!! Oh Lord..

If a whatsapp forward can — as is believed to be true today — kill somebody, can’t it kill a movie? Or at least, drastically cut it down to size, pull the final plug?

The digital space is becoming exponentially significant in India. I sincerely believe this is a great time for Aamir to get into web-series. Produce it, act in it, direct an episode or two if possible … As Saket said one can take a lot of creative liberties, reach out to a different set of audiences. Business wise also it makes sense and one can avoid lot of controversies too.

    • Whatsapp can kill for sure. However, the true destroyers are the inflated costs associated with patronizing cinema these days.
One can certainly imagine the frustration of audiences after the First Show, who went in after having spent at least $20/head (including tickets, snacks, etc.), thinking they would be treated to a masterpiece, but coming out not at all satisfied.

One can also understand frustration/disappointment of the core Aamir fanbase (most of whom were just teenagers when Aamir started this almost 2 decade long run of quality cinema). Barring a Ghajini/D3, most of his movies have been ‘message’ ventures, and portray him as a change-agent in which ever social scenario he has explored in those movies. This con-man gig was a complete departure from his firmly etched portrayal in the minds of his fans. Really wonder if they were prepared for it, or if they allow him the flexibility and latitude for such portrayals anymore.

He did go all out in this Firangi avatar, breaking various taboos. Flirting with the much younger Fatima (who is still etched in memory as the daughter from Dangal); or trying to bed Katrina, the courtesan. Especially scandalous double entendre conversation with her on top of him, eg:
“Mera dil dhadak raha hai tumhare liye”, with her responding “Woh dil nahi, kuch aur hai”
And add to it the confusion caused by Firangi’s frequent U-turns through the movie.

A few SRK/Sallu fanboy-trolls trying to diss the movie from the First Show cudve hardly caused the harm that the WOM generated by the disgruntled core of the Aamir fanbase itself did.

      • Firangi’s characterization is the USP of this film (apart from Bachchan’s swashbuckling gig at 75). Loved this Firangi character and its v well-written. But I said this before also, not many can connect. Maybe ideological issue or just an alien syndrome. Also, the overall film quality is not that great which is likely to disappoint his neutral audience.

But you are right on price. The price has to be right. Here Twitter would have given every payer a reason to hit back. I didn’t pay a huge price. So glad UK cinemas have one fee per chain generally across the country.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan saw another drop in collections on Saturday which pretty much seals its fate as the film will doing very low numbers post its extended weekend. There is a good chance the film may also drop on Sunday as there is a big downward trend in collections.

The collections on Saturday were 22.75 crore nett apprx which takes the total to 100.75 crore nett apprx which is the same as Race 3 had collected in its first three days. The problem for Thugs Of Hindostan is that around 50% of its weekend collections have come on the first day and the three days should have been much more going by that.

The collections are being held up Gujrat, UP and Bihar and while these places also dropped 15% on Saturday they are at high levels due to Diwali and they will come off at one point of time. They are adding an extra 12% to collections everyday going by the normal ratios. The collections of Thugs Of Hindostan till date are as follows.

    Thursday – 50,00,00,000 apprx

    Friday – 28,00,00,000 apprx

    Saturday – 22,75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,00,75,00,000 apprx

It hope was this film would be one of the better Diwali performers due to the names involved and the mega budget but it has turned out the other way as is the biggest Diwali disappointment in recent times.

Race 3 was an Eid disappointment earlier this year and if that expected Sunday drop comes with this film then it will be pretty certain that Thugs Of Hindostan will not reach the lifetime numbers of Race 3.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan grossed 100 crore nett plus over its first weekend making it the seventh highest weekend of all time and the second highest for Aamir Khan after Dangal in 2016. If we look at the top fifteen weekends of all time then Salman khan has six of them and Aamir Khan has four of them. Between them they have 10 of the top fifteen with Shahrukh Khan having 2 and one each for Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor. Then there is the epic Bahubali – The Conclusion.

Salman Khan and Aamir Khan have dominated the initials over the last few years but neither of them have the top two and surprisingly both the top two (Bahubali – The Conclusion and Sanju) are non holiday releases. Thugs actually should have been at the top of the pile if not every close if the film had worked considering the opening day numbers.

In terms of GROSS figures the weekend of Thugs Of Hindostan is at the level of PK and Happy New Year. The top fifteen opening weekends of all time are as follows.

  82. I will speculate what might be going on based on what Marcus and Saket are looking at. I don’t want to get involved too much.

It might be that YRF have 1) inflated day 1 2) they are compensating for this by systematically reducing following days.

Don’t be too shocked by this. Day 1 was extremely important here. To break records was a clear motive. You only need to read the tone of the leaked letter to multiplex theatres to increase ticket prices. Some stuff like ‘this is the biggest film ever and we want the biggest collections ever’. Keep an open mind to this kind of foul play by YRF.

I’ve described how it is possible to get to 50Cr day 1 quite easily with data out there. It’s even possible to be at 45Cr. I won’t press this theory further, just a passing thought that this is in deflation mode to compensate for inflation. Either way 2 wrongs don’t make a right.

Following TOH numbers now is just an exercise of interest or ridicule.

It will be a flop either way. It’s a disaster for public.

    • Your speculation may be on the mark. The data indicated that day one would be 45+ cr but its a bit suspicious that hindi figure was exactly 50 cr. So they have tampered a bit. Now I am skeptical of this too as I dont think Aamir will indulge in this no matter what. Nor do i think Yrf can do it behind his back without his knowledge. But 10% inflated reporting on day one here is a possibility in theory.

Taran is going with exact BOI’s number for Sat and Yrf may have stopped feeding numbers by now. So both BOI and Taran may be desperate now to bring back some credibility in the eyes of trolls who are their major chunk of followers in the first place!

This is MP of this decade for Aamir.

      • Reading between the lines here I think this is an exercise in correction now. It puts the Day 1 number under the radar.

And it puts BOI too under the microscope.

People should decide what they want – a clean system or not. I actually envy those that don’t care about box office a lot now. But I can’t let go of my interest here, it’s sadly some form of addiction.

I’ll always follow the evidence. Aamir’s productions and reporting are in line with trade data, even Hirani-Aamir films plus Sanju. So unlikely he is involved but this is even more reason to distance himself from YRF (if true).

Even though I liked #TOH with all flaws, but I I understood how glaring are such flaws and how much better this movie could have been with more sensible handling of script , screenplay and direction. How I wish Amitabh not agree to this project , just like he rejected race-3, Houseful-4, Welcome back and Humshakals. Probably he trusted Aamir .. but. I hope everyone get right lessons from its failure and apply to next projects. Brahmastra is one i am scared of since its inception. Indian audience don’t buy fairy tales or fantasy fictions unless told extremely well. Probably Baahubali was first of its kind successful movie. But dishing out same quality every time is hell lot of task, and i have full doubts on likes of Ayan Mukherjee.

I encourage trolls to extend their efforts cause they will be 10 years older before they get another chance like this. Lage Raho.

    • For fans I will emphasize this. Please remember that MP lead to the arc starting from RDB to Dangal. Lets see what TOH leads to …

Catch it in theaters while it is still there, coz IMHO this is one of his best roles in 30 years so far.

    • And as the trolls continue their efforts (at least in this blog), the MP reference is a good one i guess cause it would have done 160-170 cr in today’s money and thats pretty much the range ToH will end too. Some Aamir supporters still cherish MP and some will have similar sentiments regarding this. However, the paying public has shown the same finger to both.

      • MP had decent reviews and international reviews even better. The review pool here has really ripped the film apart. Public too. It was a flop while I was walking in to watch it! But I don’t regret watching it. It had it moments but is a poor film overall. I’m envious that Salim watched this in IMAX for free with popcorn and drinks. YRF should look at such occasional gifts for the public.

        • I also maintain with TOH, some basic editing and a few scene changes, one true blue blockbuster song – the difference between 180Cr and 400Cr would be made up. It’s similar to D3. VKA just lacks this talent overall.

With PK the second half falls beneath the first. But it’s like 4/5 to 2/5. Here IMO it’s like 3/5 to 1/5. It’s enough to kill the WOM. I haven’t recommended this film. The only bit I miss here is the +40’s who like it so if this supports an older school of cinema I am not in a position to advise based on that. Coded messages I will not get if there were any as AnJo’s review said. So open to how this could find an audience with this segment.

          • Both half of ToH is 3/5 for me. D3 was 1/5 both halves. D3 was beyond any salvation, but this cud have been better. Any Mela reference is BS. None of Aamir fans like Mela. Here many have liked it or found it watchable. Both TOH and MP are way better than Mela or D3.

Hilarious that some are blaming social media and didnt know this website has so much power, YRF should just have given a nice gift to you all. How about that Dhoom 3 was uber crap, people hated it. Imdb 5,4 (mostly gives and idea to see pos or neg). Yes it did a good total, but it alerted people for next time Acharya and friends, wait for the reviews and reception. Die hard fans will always go first day no matter what.
So with 10%+ ticket hike, lower tax, 3 open weeks, it will fold under 180cr. Movies rarely drop on Sundays.

  86. A few friends were urging Bachan fans to watch it for his sake as the film is something like a tribute to him. I went to watch it for Bachan despite the negativity.

The less said about the movie, the better. But as a Bachan fan, it is everything I was expecting from a YRF production, contrary to what the teaser suggested.

Saying that Bachan got a good deal here is scrapping the barrel. I posted here some time back presuming after the early intro, the film will be all Aamir with Bachan appearing here and there as something symbolic rather being offered really substantial.

It is a YRF and for them Bachan is not that powerhorse of a performer and tremendous talent. To them, he only adds additional face value to the film and thus can bring in additional collections to the table.

To tell those who have watched Bachan regularly during his prime and even lately that this film is worth watching for Bachan is being really wide of the mark.

Bachan gets a raw deal here. It is as poor a role as in Hindustan Ki Kasam.

Given something good to work on, Bachan can give you something like Khakee. Elevating a film to absolutely much higher levels through his performance. But above all, it’s a film where everyone has well written parts and a screenplay that grips you till the very end.

It’s not about adding faces to nothingness just to boost collections.

TOH is nothing but a lazy money-making scheme. It is plastic. The efforts made at the writhing stage seem minimal. It is a bore-fest which is criminal when it is supposed to be an adventure film.

Rangan is right when he says even Dharmesh Darshan could have done a better job here.

    • Not a chance. The box office is developing a hit or flop model which is being fed by online, WOM. We are either seeing more extreme successes or flops. The middle ground is less. It’s better in some cases. The hit ratio is high this year and so is the flop ratio. You have a few like Gold, Padman, Hitchki in the average or above zone. Race 3 and TOH the big hopes that flopped.

First week probably 140-145Cr. After that it will be lucky to collect 20Cr. Give this 160Cr target. 2nd week will be 90%+ drop. The box office shows no mercy here. It’s more vociferous because people have been left disappointed, some I’d say very hurt. See the Instagram post from yesterday. This was a huge opportunity for at a minimum something fun and exhilarating, with the box office to fire up but it’s like a Diwali firecracker without gunpowder.

The one thing thats its lacking is twists and turns, the story is predictable. This is a fun film that isn’t pretentious, watch it for a decent action adventure romp. I also found that Aamir Khans character is the weakest point of the movie, he gratuitously over acts in some scenes to the point where he is annoying and in the worst kind of way, not really sure what his agenda was for doing this film, except that in his defence, this is a character he hasn’t played before. Bachchan and Fatima Sana Shaikh walk away with the best performances, great to see Bachchan still active at his age, and Katrina is eye candy.

  91. So, looks like social media is to be somewhat blamed for toh failure?
    – Would it be true than same can be blamed for race3 failure or for that matter any big budget films failure?
    – Would it also be the reason for success of big movies? I mean it has to go both ways, no?

    New term to Satyamshot “troll/trolling”.
    – I think troll/trolling has always been there, just go thru any other boxoffice posts and you’ll see it.
    – aamir fans do it all the time to other stars/fans, and take great joy in it, now the tables are turn around and a term was introduced.

By the way, please go thru zero trailer, 2.0 trailer or any boxoffice posts for reference. If you need help, let me know, i can cut/paste at least 50 comments from each thread which qualifies for trolling/spamming.

Now, coming to Amitabh/Aamir, I really want them to do another movie together. Because both are great and it would be shame to have this in history book as their first and only collaboration. Amitabh/SRK first was Mohabbatin which was very liked by many (of course the aamir fans on satyamshot will have different opinion but after TOH, it gives a whole new meaning to mohabbatain). Their 2nd together, K3G was not liked like mohabbatain but nontheless, was a good hit film. They also had couple more. Heck, even salman has a good one with baagban. thou salman didn’t have a big role in that film but people will remember that it was a good movie.

Amitabh/aamir has to remove this bad taste from peoples memory.

Imagine if Shakti was a crappy movie like toh, wouldn’t it be sad for the history book that dilip/amitabh came together in a movie like that?

I don’t think bachchan is in position to make a move at this stage so aamir has to take the steps. If he is doing MB, then make bachchan part of it and erase TOH memory from peoples mind. It’ll be good for the history book.

Maybe TZP Bachchan could have played Aamir’s role and I think he would have been perfect too. This pairing works and is in the end the film’s core strength. Otherwise I would hesitate again as it would be a questionable move from day 1.

Any mention of Baghban makes me roll my eyes. Even if it was a hit, I’d run a marathon to avoid that film. Not because of Salman who is okay…just the entire premise.

two cents from me on Thugs of Hindostan, the Aamir factor and BOI:

    ——

Yes, the film has not been liked and I can understand the disappointment of the general, unbiased public towards it.

The endless and mindless trolling will continue. how many of these constitute those who were waiting for Aamir to fall — we will never know. But I’m positive a good section of media and trade have been involved.

A thing worth noting is the BOI stand — They have played smart, very smart in all this fiasco.

The first two days, they acted as Aamir partisans, to give the impression they support any big budget masala film, throwing and giving all sorts of impossible numbers (which could be true, btw).

But now, they’ve kind of shifted gears too soon, their latest articles on the film aren’t even defensive in the way they are for SRK or Salman films. It’s as if they are gladly expecting TOH has crashed.
incidentally, the very last writeup they come up with have them comparing it with Race 3 where they have expectedly exaggerated on the Salman factor while ignoring Aamir’s presence completely.

I was suspicious when they started on a positive note on TOH. But now they’ve lived up to their name. playing smart so they could appease every star fan without blatantly showing their bias

That dumbass mass entertainers. Aamir got the real stardom by doing quality movies and not these massy entertainers. So he should quit trying to become Salman Khan.

      • I don’t agree. The most dumbest films of Aamir’s hits in 90’s were Raja Hindustani & Ishq. He is a star who is a bit more refined but also Salman himself would be stupid in TOH. He couldn’t play such a role. Tapping into this audience is the equivalent audience of Fanaa and Ghajini in the 00’s. He can do dumb films but they need to be a higher bar.

Plus I seriously doubt Aamir apes Salman. Salman the other way. He smuggled in Sultan before Dangal released and something like Bajrangi Bhaijaan Aamir could easily do.

Aamir’s model seems a massy entertaining film to capture the audience and hoping that audience likes films like Talaash or RDB.

Not that I think Ghajini or Fanaa are completely dumb films.

Also, its not about aping Salman. You don’t take it literally. It means, he wants to become the crazy boxoffice star who just stands and sells the movie. He has told multiple times that. I’m unable to put you across well but if you can understand the point I’m making is not Salman khan literally but that kind of stardom where you don’t need to do anything and make a movie hit by just sheer presence.

(Aamir) needs to do a lot as a star, like script selection etc. That doesn’t interpret as him wanting to be a pure superstar of presence, it is more a quality of Salman’s he’s identified.

And yes he is not this kind of star. But I don’t see that as his intention.

  95. Too many comments by the time I slept and gotup. Just skimmed few of them. Few comments

    – Folks expecting Big B and Aamir to again do a quick movie to wipe out this memories is not practical in reality. Aamir doesn’t work like that. Big B is too old even for Mahabharat (if he’s making one). So, I think that’s all we’ll have with Big B and Aamir combo in our lives (at least as a movie)

    – Folks are confusing WOM vs media outlet. If your friends watched the movie and send you whatsapp message its not whatsapp killing the movie, its the negative WOM. Surely there are tons of memes and jokes but that’s still all part of the negative WOM. If there are friends who watched it and didn’t like and that dissuades a person from watching it. That’s actually NEGATIVE WOM doesn’t matter how they pass the message to them. And WOM is the only thing which impacts a movie. Now, that used to be shared in person earlier or papers and now we have more ways to spread it and it happens at faster space than 10 years back.

    – Too much blaming media and too many comments on that one; so won’t add much to it. It simply doesn’t’ work that way. It can add the speed to drop faster but it can’t make a good film drop and turn into disaster.

    – All small things do matter. There was hardly any real buzz of the movie. I posted some youtube views and its shocking to say the least. What it did in 1 month, Zero did it on 4 days. Dangal was huge on youtube views as everyone wanted to watch it multiple times. TOH watching once was more than enough. It didn’t sets the views on fire. Yes movie would have opened good and then picked up if great WOM and all that would have been forgot.

    – I was gathering and senior folks are like.. Is that Dangal daughter his heroine? Why is Aamir suddenly trying to act young? So he don’t get stuck in Dangal image? That U-turn was hard to digest. I don’t know how many of them think so but it gets added. Good he didn’t kiss Fatima in the movie (that would have been gross).

    – I also felt that Aamir picked up this project to move away from Dangal image and this was ready made fun role (being developed for few yrs with Hrithik) and quite departure from the social image he built over the years. But its quite a departure in public’s view. You can do such movie but if you give it 2 years, expectations will manifold.

    – Previous film with same team/director always helps. During PK, it had all the goodwill of 3Idiots and it opened as it was sequel kind of benefit. Same thing here. people were very confident after D3. All were apprehensive and then little slip, people will avoid it. So, all the D3 issues added to TOH. People will not give chance to such a director. If it was Hirani, still the fall would have not been as drastic as the goodwill will continue for a week and then will fall.

    – Finally, I might still watch it soon. I remember watching Mohenjodaro in 2nd weekend when it was done and dusted. Though my watching will not help anything to its boxoffice. 🙂

Even VKA as much as a hackjob director he is has at least done a bit better than D3.

The director was always a major issue here. But the impression was Aamir may add more here which overall hasn’t happened. Or what he has added has not worked.

I am specifically replying to MASTER and to Z, and generally to all. I am talking for me here:

In the example I provided regarding what happened within my company, where 25 folks decided to bail on TOH at the last moment, none of them got a feed-back from folks they knew. It’s a different thing and completely believable if Jayshah or Master or anyone here tells me that it’s worthless; don’t step out. But if I take a decision of not venturing out without anyone I know telling me and merely on a whatspp forward — that’s whatsapp felling a ticket. On any day, with a 1000 whatsapp forwards to me and memes, if even a single person — like Master’s capsule reviews that he used to prove — tells me it’s worthless, I will take his/her word over the 1000 forwards. Again, in the example I provided, I told the other team that my team is watching today, I can let you know after watching if it’s worth visiting or not. They replied, and I paraphrase: Nah look at the feed-back on social media man. It’s done.
The next usual insinuation: If it happened with an Aamir film here, doesn’t the same apply to the 2 other Ks? Were you sleeping then? No I wasn’t sleeping [I did sleep in many of their recent films though]; and yes they do apply to other stars.  It’s just that with the other 2, I am the least bit interested in their career! I don’t even know or care to know when Salman’s films release. I don’t see his films in theater as a matter of principle: I will watch it for free if I get a chance. In SRK, I am invested a little if I find the projects intriguing and if he chooses to work with directors like Shimit or Ashu or obviously, Mani. If it’s a film where he stretches his arms, I run a 100 miles away from those arms! So I never say, or I have never said that this applies only to this film, or films that I am interested in. It’s just that I am so uninterested in the others, that I really don’t care.
That earlier WOM existed through papers or in person and it’s now replaced by whatsapp or SM isn’t exactly fair. Because in person, if you lie, your agenda is exposed. If I tell someone to go watch TOH and I know that it’s crap, and you know me, I have to face the music tomorrow. If one’s a coward, one will use SM and these kinds of things just to vent one’s frustration or even more dangerously, get things done for which you don’t have b@#$s to do yourself. How many of those ‘lynchers’ actually sat down, verified that some person was actually doing what he was accused of doing, and decided to take law into their own hands? I am not being facetious here comparing a movie with a human life, just saying this is something maybe to think about.
This is unrelated,or maybe related in some way, but I absolutely and categorically abhor social media; face-book, twitter, and the like. Unfortunately, today, it’s become the way of life. People have become so insensitive, making fun of people’s God-given/gifted/cursed attributes that it’s pathetic to even get a glimpse of them. Anybody can write anything and escape! Social media is the literal translation of what Sunil Dutt tells the thief caught on the railway platform in MUNNABHAI MBBS: ” Please remember, anybody with any amount of frustration will hit you; someone is angry with his wife, someone is angry that India lost a cricket match, someone is angry with something, and beta, unfortunately today you will bear the brunt.” All these things of people posting a pic of their kid lost, of somebody needing a blood tranfusion, somebody needing money for an operation and such information spreading fast, are just collateral benefits and nothing else. These ‘smart’ phones are turning people dumber day by day.
When I was a kid, and I used to stay in a hostel for my engineering studies, I used to make it a point to visit my grand-parents and uncles and aunts every Sunday in the afternoon. I didn’t need to, but I wanted to see them, spend time with them. I could have just called them on the phone and made some idle talk and finished it off. Just last month, my cousins were near my father’s house, eating vada-pav, enjoying. My father lives alone and the vada-pav stall is 5 minutes from his house. Instead of visiting him, they just decided to say ‘hi’ to him in a whatsapp group. My father had stepped out for something and he saw them. They didn’t know that he had seen them. I was pissed off with them and lashed out at them. Really?
I beg to differ that DOOM 3 was better than TOH. I have mentioned before in my thoughts, in a reply to Z, and again I say, that Victor has improved when compared to DOOM 3. A film that has a scene where a cop comes from India to nab a thief and the ‘Detective’ tell him about the progress that the American police has made by saying: ‘All I can say now is that he’s a thief!!’ cannot be compared to TOH.  But I do understand the total disappointment that neutral folks have with this film, what with Aamir coming on board.

These guys are more upset this time as YRF didn’t invite them to some poxy events or they didn’t get some free goodies. They haven’t been so vocal in past about basic ‘allowed’ manipulation. BOI reduces or increases collections overtime and continually revises verdicts. Under what logical reasoning can this happen?

I’ve flogged this dead horse for a dozen years, the best answer I get is BOI is spot on or they are the best we have. Now it’s quite possible they have forfeited there own collections for an inflatable YRF one. Does that not convince anyone?

Horrendous trend for #ToH during the weekend.

#ThugsOfHindostan – SUNDAY Collection would be in the range of ₹ 15-16 cr Nett . Film is registering 25% fall compared to Saturday, night shows will fall further & many late night shows might get cancelled across India.

  98. For box office historians, when was the last time a big film of this kind failed in such a manor?

    Like

    • It’s not happened in a very long time, a film of this scale and ambition. There were some disappointments in the early 80s but they didn’t ‘mean’ as much within those contexts. The Burning Train is the best example I can think of (the film was edited after release as well) and even that film didn’t really have the biggest star around. Shaan was disappointing after Sholay but was otherwise a significant grosser, even by Bachchan standards. There were some big failures that wiped people out. Jeetendra’s Deedar-e-Yaar with Rishi but this film wasn’t otherwise big enough. Kamal Amrohi’s (Pakeeza) Razia Sultan was again a huge failure but once more wasn’t exactly awaited with bated breath. Now having said that I’d add that even TOH, and without denying the obvious, didn’t quite have that sort of buildup. And in today’s age the narrative changes quickly too. Even when it was under-production you didn’t quite feel there was something special brewing. Put differently had MP done this badly it might have ‘meant’ more than this film doing the same, if that makes sense. Much as Ra One was a huge failure but just doesn’t mean as much at that stage in SRK’s career. It’s always a combination of scale, the buildup to the release, the scale of failure and so on. Of course TOH was the biggest film, certainly the biggest since K3G, all things considered but these days things are not quite mythologized this way. Again not understating the obvious, just that what we get is this frenzy of twitter activity that disappears after a while. It won’t be easy for Yashraj or Aamir to live this down, less so Bachchan, given his age and all his other questionable choices over the years, but it’s otherwise just too distracted an age for even the biggest failure to quite become fabled the way things did once upon a time. And even with Aamir in a perverse sense the very fact that this doesn’t seem as much his kind of film (like D3) as many of the stuff he otherwise likes to do perhaps saves him. It would be harder to live down a film that defines Aamir in a more core sense. The same for other stars too. Imtiaz Ali’s total flop with SRK is much worse than Ra One.

Getting back to the Burning train I love the film! The unedited version of course.

          • Add Ghai and you easily had the biggest movie of 90’s.

            Like

          • Yes, Trimurti released right after DDLJ and Ram-Jaane but it was not considered as pure SRK movie as it was signed in one of his earlier years in 1993. Then Sanju went to jail and then huge delays and Anil signed as backup and then fight between Ghai and Mukul Anand and Ghai completed some portions. Finally it released in Dec 95 but it was too late and too messy. The movie opened great coz of huge promotion by ghai but couldn’t keep up after day 1 like TOH. Both Ghai and SRK went and made a quieter Pardes in 2 yrs.

        • true but by the time the film released both leads were on a downswing (the film took forever to make) and I don’t think too many people were realistically expecting big things here. But yes it was still an important release.

      • Satyam, thanks for this, good to read thru it. Agree with it. The Burning Train flopped big time. The other you’ve listed, they were flop but like you said, those movies were not big enough.

I would add Mera Naam Joker to the list.

MNJ came after after Sangam (a text book for many romantic films to follow for years, a huge hit). MNJ was made with huge budget, huge star cast and it flopped big time.

I would probably add Ajooba to the list too.

        Like

        • Yes absolutely. MNJ was a colossal failure and a film that almost broke Raj Kapoor. of course he returned with Bobby even if I’d argue he was never that sort of ‘artistic’ filmmaker again. Ironically MNJ became years later one of RK’s biggest money spinners if not the biggest on reruns.

On Ajooba true but at that point most Bachchan films were underperforming anyway. But yes this didn’t work at all. This isn’t the worst film around but again quite flat.

  99. Has Yash Raj had a recent film that has been universally accepted? Like a 3 Idiots or a Bajrangi Bhaijaan? I can’t seem to recall a film that hasn’t come out of Yashraj not having an inherent flaw, there biggest grossers have run on a half decent script and the presence of Salman. Even a better offering from yrf like Chak De India, though well made, was predictable.Thugs, imo, suffers from that same ‘flaw’ that exists in all yrf scripts, this time predictability. It’s hard to see why Aamir okayed this, maybe he was overcome by the grandeur of a Bahubali type film or the opportunity to do a different role, though he doesn’t appear to be that sort of actor, he always appears quite grounded and intelligent in his interviews. I’ve always thought of Aamir as a filmaker, not so much an actor, though he excels in that facet too. He’s directed a cult classic like TZP and produced good, offbeat films like peepli live, so for me if he stars in a film, theres usually something great in the script for Aamir to say yes, with thugs this wasn’t the case, it’s a decent film but nothing extra-ordinary and hence the backlash.
Contrast that to SRK/Salman. I see SRK as an actor (on the basis of films like CDI, VZ, even Fan, a very good actor who for some reason hams it up periodically) who has no clue about the art of film-making, when he stars in a film, you know that the quality is dependent on the director, e.g. if SRK stars in a film by farah khan or karan johar, you know it’s going to be trash, I knew that a Ra. One, for example, would tank because of the directors record at the box office. With Salman, I see a muscle man who made it big, not dissimilar to a Sly Stallone, his films don’t carry an inherent quality, he plays himself and if he’s lucky he’ll get a good script like BB. Again, his success is dependent on a combination of star quality and the quality of the film, much like SRK. I think Aamirs films carry alot more expectation at the box office, unlike his contemporaries he offers something different at the box office every time, unfortunately TOH wasn’t something different.

  100. WOW, it’s in 16 to 17 crore range for Sunday.

    https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=4428

Thugs Of Hindostan continued the downturn on Sunday as it dropped around 25% from Saturday. The drop is bigger than the drop on Saturday from Friday which was around 18%. The film collected around 16.50-17 crore nett on Sunday which takes the extended weekend to 117.50 crore nett.

The film has been in free fall since Friday after the huge first day and weekday business will be scary considering what has happened over the last three days. There will be some holiday leftover but that will not help much as Gujarat is feeling the pinch and is not as steady as it should over this period.

The best circuits will be Mumbai and Delhi / UP due to Gujarat and UP respectively while the South India is where the film has fared worst compared to other circuits.

Day by Day the total is coming down to probably 150Cr now. This is some doing!

Desperately feel sorry for Aamir and co now. It’s not as bad as this.

The expectations were huge here. This is like a well oiled Barcelona side that got clobbered by Bayern Munich few years back. It’s a one-off event when anything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

I hope people don’t do something stupid here. I’ve never seen numbers move in this way – insanely remarkable drops.

evenif it does a lifetime of 150 or whatever, entire credit for that goes to Aamir’s BO power – from Monday onwards, it is the film’s merit (!) which will take over. Aamir has said this often that first 3 days is the star-power and then the content…..SRK is totally gone as his star-power has faded considerably, Sallu has been given a warning when his Jai Ho, Race 3 etc. sank….so audiencs are smarter these days.

Its always the case in such huge flops. Even Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja was not that bad especially for a debutante director – Satish Kaushik. Same with Prem but bad lead hero Sanjay Kapoor ruined it. Same with Trimurti. Even Ra.One had its moments and some novel concept of superhero. I could go on and on.

  101. This year looks good for young stars or small movies. Public seems to be rejecting even khans movies if they are not good. First Salman and now Aamir. Next could be Zero although SRK is not the same star once he was and hence Zero bombing won’t be that shocking. On the brighter side small movies like Raazi, Stree, Badhai Ho, Andhadhundh have done shockingly well and many of them did over 100crrs. Don’t think anyone expected them to do this kind of superhit/blockbuster business. Aamir will off course comeback stronger (didn’t liked D3 which was meh and was surprised when Aamir repeated with the same director). Hopefully the trend of small good quality movies (without superstars) doing blockbuster business will continue in 2019 and keep getting stronger.

  103. It was about time that Aamir would falter, it came with TOH but was impending to happen sooner than later as it’s been almost 17 years since Mela in 2000, when he gave an outright flop both commercially and critically. One more thing which is very significant is the behavioural pattern of Aamir fans which has brought about this kind of ridicule & vicarious fun making at the cost of TOH’s debacle as they used to be indulging in the similar kind of mocking & jeering at other stars flops and failures thinking Aamir to be this invincible and impregnable entity at the box-office which was always a ‘reverie’ pending to be broken as none can escape the cyclic turns of success and failure, though some like Aamir have incredible run and fortune to have escaped it for so long but not always!!

Aamir should retrospect on this fiasco and work at a much faster speed than his usual 2 years gap between a movie as he will be 54 next year!! And I’m also not in favour of Mahabharata at this point of time as he can easily make it after he turns 60 but devoting all his energy and time in a single project wherein he can easily make 4 to 5 movies in this time span. A mix of big, medium and small budget ventures during next 6 years is neither improbable nor too much as his 2005-12 releases did fall under this category, eg big budget movies in MP, RDB and Ghajhini and medium budgets in Fanaa, Talaash and 3 Idiots and small budgeted TZP and DG. After 60 he can direct and produce full time and act once in a while. Also one advice and suggestion for all Aamir fans is not to behave condescendingly and patronisingly towards other stars and their fans as Aamir would never approve of such childish comments under the garb of defending him!! And why stoop so low where there’s no distinction between other stars fans and Aamir’s which is why Aamir is Aamir who is not insecure, jealous and scheming!! I hope members don’t look at it as sermonising as I’m just penning my heartfelt views.

    • This is a good comment MyselfAamir though I’d disagree in this sense. The fans who get carried away deserve all the criticism but they shouldn’t be more sober for this reason (that a film like TOH can always happen). Because otherwise if this sort of thing doesn’t come around the attitude seems justified. Of course other fans are hardly in a position to preach to Aamir fans considering their own insanities (let’s be frank.. anyone can be ‘overrated’ but given how many other stars get overrated I think doing so with Aamir is still the most respectable enterprise). Yes some Aamir fans went crazy over time but they just followed all the other fans. And the latter are also now ‘enjoying’ TOH! So very few fans of any kind are honest brokers even if they always pretend otherwise.

But on the rest yes TOH was a colossal miscalculation from Aamir. Maybe he felt this wasn’t good enough, a D3 like deal, maybe he had misgivings when he saw the final version which explains some of his more recent statements (here one must also remember that such big scale films cannot be fixed suddenly even if one senses problems). Either way even if one wants to blame him for a being a bit asleep at the switch here it’s not really the end of the world. It’s a huge embarrassment yes but it hardly negates his 18 year record since Lagaan. No star is invincible but hey that record comes pretty close (and in all kinds of genres). Eventually everyone fails. Whether out of hubris or not. It’s just the nature of the business. It’s just incredible it took Aamir this long to have a true blue failure of this kind. Certainly no one, no one at all expected this film to be that failure, still these things happen. I wouldn’t overread things here. It’s a huge failure no doubt, it’s a huge embarrassment too, but it’s one bad decision on his part at the end of the day. Yashraj though is a different entity altogether and here they earn my disgust for the very same failure.

My larger point is, I’m not disputing the obvious but TOH shouldn’t be read as some huge morality tale on Aamir.

Totally agree. When I saw that role comment in Karan interview and that long post whatever fate of movie I enjoyed working. Its clear sign he was not confident of the final version. I’m sure Aamir will confess later down the road as he knew film won’t work. That’s going to happen sometime in 1 year or so.

But such flops definitely dents any star. Imagine the career trajectory of Srk post Ra.One. It impacted his stardom majorly.

    • And this blind loyalty and fanaticism is more detrimental to one’s favourite star than his competitors as it fills him with smugness which is more damaging to his or her career than sincere criticism which keeps him/her grounded and awake not to fall in the abyss of complacency which is very difficult to overcome. Aamir’s USP has been his ability to listen to even his harshest critic, though constructive and not circle himself with yes-men & sycophants who keep feeding his ego. Dhoom 3 was a red herring yet Aamir couldn’t see it and continued his association with YRF & VK Acharya despite the criticism even from his fans who were not at all happy with it, so once it was fluke and fortuitous but can’t be repeated each time. Aamir would make a very strong comeback after this setback as he did after Mela in 2001 with Lagaan and DCH as his entire career is testimony to it. I wish Aamir and his fans all the very best!!

      • All you said is noble, Myselfaamir; But it ain’t like that in the real/online world. You just need to check the ‘tone’ of comments, whether here or anywhere outside, and you will get the gloating going-on inside. Had this combo of Aamir-Amitabh succeeded critically and financially, this would have given permanent heart-burn to many. Amitabh has worked with SRK, Salman, Hrithik, Anil, Jackie, etc., but the A-A combination never happened and it’d been 30 years since QSQT! [I am so glad RISHTA did not materialize in ’97, what with Inder Kumar at the helm, but it was a bloody dream cast: Aamir, Amitabh, Madhuri!] This was a double bonanza for some-one like me on a Diwali and hence this kind of failure is obviously truly disappointing: 1) For my selfish reason of seeing 2 of my favorites together, and it’s bloody too late in the day 2) With Bachchan’s age, things are not going to fall in place for these 2 to get ‘together’ again. This was the opportunity; and it’s done but not yet dusted – for Aamir at least.

But one need not change one’s stance just because 80% of the public didn’t like the movie. I would still say it’s way better than D3 and both the A’s have aced it. At 76, this is one of the best 30 minutes a Bachchan fan could get. And this is an eye-opener for an Aamir Khan fan — what with the bulk of his career devoted to message movies hidden in entertainment — to guage how reverential he is toward Bachchan and what he meant for those who watched him in theaters at his peak. One would though, think that Yash Raj and Victor would pull up their socks and get to work like their life depended on it, as though this was not about money, but prestige at stake. If you get the prestige right, 95% of the time, money will follow. YRF could have done more, got selfish, got rough and tried to hire a better director, or maybe given Aamir a free hand or asked him to check on things as though it were his production, but no, they depended solely on AA to do the heavy lifting. They had a huge lottery ticket waiting in their hands, all they had to do was strike the right numbers in the right spots, and more of them. It didn’t happen.

I still question the harshness with which this has been met, but it’s time to move on; and nobody can deny that while this has given a chance for many to gloat, for the fans, it could have been a universally treasured cinema

p.s.: I know this is not Bharat matrimony but Satyamshot. However, the first time I watched an Amitabh  movie was in ’88 and it was SHAKTI — running to packed houses, in a re-run, in its 3rd week, in a theater in Kolhapur — and I was taken to see that movie since we couldn’t get tickets to STAR WARS playing in a theater bang opposite. And that’s how I got hooked to Amitabh. I am still on the left side of 40 and short of 4. My favorite all-time performance is Dilip in FOOTPATH . In other words, my tastes are quite at odds with my age, and quite regressive at that, I guess!

  108. The signs were there from SS. Aamir hyped it so much that we expected more from that film. Then we thought its a good film but nothing more.
A Badhaai Ho type of film and success will not do for aamir.
For Toh also he misled us by saying Fatima has the most important part.
You cannot relegate female characters to glorified extras in a big film. In Sholay, Basanti was the hero for many and she had a very strong role.

    • Fatima is the soul of the film story-wise. But she acted so bad that no one can connect with or feel for the character. Victor’s plasticity did not help either.

Nothing wrong in Aamir’s comment (even Big B said the same at some point). Fatima has no future in cinema, at least not in commercial cinema.

      • Casting Fatima was because of aamir’s blind trust or whatever.
Extracting a good performance is the director’s call.
I wish he comes out of his fascination for his Dangal girls.
Osho will be another blunder if it takes place.
Does he listen to anyone anymore?

        • So you think he will have time for Osho now?

Casting Fatima was a blunder, but then they did try to get Aaliya but she refused.

          • But there are better actors than Fatima even if Aaliya had refused. Even Zaira would have acted better.
His fondness for Fatima cant be ruled out.

      • Fatima is honestly god awful here compared to Dangal. Absolute miscast. Sanya seems legit so far, she’s very cute in her Badhaai Ho role. And I’ve forgotten Ss’s name, she was solid there (this is the ultimate problem here, they are the ‘dangal’ girls. I haven’t cared enough to even get their names or spell them correctly. It’s unfair of me but that’s what Dangal has done. The industry typically produces ‘stars’ but here it was decent, good actresses who now are working to be stars. It’s very difficult this way)

    • Good catch Sanjana!! Aamir always talked of Fatima the central character in TOH yet she seems to have an inconsequential role as per the reviews and feedback. Also Katrina’s role has 2 dance numbers & nothing else, so is Amitabh’s role which is comparatively shorter than the expectations. Here it seems Aamir just cared for the length of his character and left others at the director’s mercy which proved to be fatal as most of Aamir films have strong characters for other actors as well which make his films a wholesome entertainer.

  109. Now that I’ve had some more time to think about ToH, I’ll jot down a few more thoughts on the debacle.

    1) The problem with Viktor isn’t about his intentions. On paper, this sounds like a real fun project. The problem lies with his incompetence – as An Jo has pointed out (also NyKavi), he knew what he was attempting; he did not misuse Bachchan’s presence in the film at all. And Bachchan isn’t just another character in the film. There is a justified, albeit misguided, attempt to recapture his past glory; to relive some of his most iconic moments in this film – but, and this is a big but, it’s quite a superficial exercise. The gesturality does ring hollow because there is no strong emotional core behind it. Khudabaksh, at best, is a mighty and glorified presence – there is nothing else beyond that. With all due respect to Baahubali, you don’t sign up Amitabh Bachchan to play Katappa’s role – and then try to relive his past through some signature moments. That does sound as hollow as it appears hollow on screen. I agree there are financial considerations and Bachchan isn’t the Box Office draw he once was – but that’s all the more reason to use someone else in his place.

    2) This might sound controversial but you can’t make a character like Firangi Mallah the focal point in a masala universe. Beneath the laughs and the character’s idiosyncrasies, there lies a deeply duplicitous person. One whose actions cause a loss of lives and it just makes no sense that everyone from the British to the gang of Thugs treat him with such warmth and affection. Even after he is found out, multiple number of times. This is just bad writing. In a true-blue masala universe, a character like Firangi would occupy a side hero’s role. Think Mithun Chakraborty in Ghulami. Firangi would be a very interesting side character but one doesn’t see reluctant heroes in a masala movie, let alone double-dealing ones. Of course, Firangi’s character ties in with YR’s long list of duplicitous romantic heroes (all the Rajs, be it Malhotras or Aryans), but that’s a different can of worms.

    3) I agree that Aamir probably had the time of his life playing Firangi Mallah. But for some reason, he misread the scope of his character. Firangi isn’t a hero, he’s an anti-hero, much like Jack Sparrow (this is where the PoTC reference finally comes to life) but ToH is by no means a Hollywood fantasy-adventure. ToH is decidedly a masala film, warts and all, and in this universe, one simply can’t connect too much with such a character. When the stakes are set up high and the spoils include revenge and independence from the British Raj, one needs a hero as the chief character, not a buffoon. Again, this doesn’t mean Aamir has done a bad job or anything, it’s in fact the opposite, but this is contrary to the film’s own initial build up.

    4) And so, ToH ends up being a massively confused film. It’s mostly about a Thug-like character (Firangi Mallah), who isn’t exactly a Thug but imbibes some of the characteristics associated with the erstwhile Thugs. However, it also tries to up the ante by attempting a revenge-fuelled melodrama, and this is where the chickens come home to roost. It’s not the first time this has happened to a Viktor film. He’s had this problem since Tashan. He doesn’t realize that his self-winking (while writing a script) creates a massive imbalance for the audience. And no one can blame them either – it’s difficult to laugh and deeply care about a serious cause at the same time.

    • Also note that masala is not his forte. He likes that genre but does not understand how it works. His entire career record is a proof of it. This result should make him realize it and stick to his strengths. MB wont be masala. Masala simply wont be co-funded by netflix.

    • Good post; I wanted to say that earlier but missed out. Aamir’s character is the real reason people are not connecting with the movie. His character should have been no nonsense guy who will bail out Zafira’s character and help reclaim their throne. Instead of going all the tropes and fun, it should have been always the serious tone. Imagine how Sivudu is head over heels over Tamanna in Baahubali part 1. Just to save and get her love, he promises to go and completer her mission in rescuing Devasena. It’s straight to the point.

Also, we always see 2 characters in place of Firangi in such movies. Mela had 2 (1 serious, 1 comic) which also comes from Sholay(Jai, Veeru). Here, they just can’t skip the serious and make the whole movie with comic character. You will lose the seriousness of the core fight happening. You need to just do serious or can add another side kick as comic. Just selecting the comic version in such a masala universe will give not give you fantasy feeling. Also, its not just comic here but all the dicey charcter if he’s good or bad person which further adds and irritates to the film’s core theme.

    • Perfectly summarised Saket. Astutely described, can’t disagree with anything. Firangi is no more or no less like Uday Chopra like character from Dhoom 3 except with different shades. Once you can’t take him seriously AFTER serious things happen to him it becomes pretty silly.

Even if it did average business it’s a very meaningless exercise. Aamir’s investment in China has boosted the entire industry. He can’t be remembered for helping create this new revenue stream and also killing it.

It’s the one thing that must not happen at any cost.

1- He didnt tried to mislead viewers. He told before hand that it is a fun film. No deep massages are in it.
2- Didnt overpromoted it. Infact he didnt promoted it.
3- He does so much hard work in his every film. A lot of time and energy.

    He didnt deserve this. But….

It takes a while for Aamir to come out of this monumental mauling. I think course correction happened to Aamir the way it happened to Amitabh, Sharukh and Salman. But this is worse than what happened to above three and the tag of Biggest Disaster of Alltime will hurt him more. His hubris and overconfidence that whatever crap is thrown at audience is accepted has boomeranged on him. His stature diminished, he will be like Salman and Sharukh, as one among may actors doing movies to stay relevant but not as Numero Uno.
Some are commenting that people are here to vent their opinions only when he is failing is not right. Hardcore fans will have time to analyze, dissect a movie and bash other Actors. Others just express their viewpoint about a movie.
As for as Mahabharath is concerned I feel he should not do it as a web series stretched over 7 to 10 years. I feel he should do 3 to 4 content movies in next 6 years until he reaches 60. Later he should settle in character actor roles.
