  3. Sanjay Gupta’s Mumbai Saga has finally released on the big screen, and its two heroes, John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, cannot stress enough the importance of experiencing the big-scale action of the film in theatres. So, in a bid to encourage the audience to watch the film in cinema halls, the lead stars themselves took to the box office section of a theatre to sell tickets to viewers.

Emraan posted on Friday a video of John sitting at the box office counter and selling the tickets. Later, the stars entered a screening to watch the film together.

Dibakar had made three brilliant films (KKG, OLLO, LSD) before he got too indulgent. I loved Shanghai when it came out but haven’t revisited it. Byomkesh Bakshy tried to say a lot of things but it was difficult to finish that film. He’s a very fine filmmaker but a rather niche one

        • KKG was no doubt a good small film. But Dibakar has not delivered something like that afterwards. Rest of his filmography is pretty mediocre. His latest, Sandeep Aur Pinky Feraar has collected just 10 lakhs on Day One and is a disaster for YRF.

        • @Marcus : Box office collections in the absolute is not exactly the best way of judging a film’s merits, but yeah Dibakar’s overrated by the media to an exponent of 10.

        • My point was that a film that does only 10 lakhs nett on opening day did not deserve a theatrical release in first place. This got a chance riding simply on Dibakar’s reputation. As for the film, no idea how good or bad it is. Glanced through a few reviews and it does not seem v promising.

  7. Had the pleasure of witnessing Judas & the Black Messiah on the big screen. Easily has to be one of the most relevant and miserably beautiful films I’ve witnessed in the recent past. Despite the slack pace, the razor sharp dialogues, the relevant theme about the Black lives movement through the eyes of Fred Hampton & Bill o’ Neil and the dingy Chicago setting of the 60s make it a must watch. The narrative mesmerizes yet creates adequate misery in equal measure. The performances are near perfect as all the actors from Daniel Kaluuya to LaKeith Stanfield to Jesse Plemons and the rest manage to leave an impact that makes the viewer transport back to the day & age of the Black Panther Party’s struggle. A definite Must Watch for anyone who has access to this gem. 4/5

  9. Mumbai Saga Collects In Mumbai Circuit Despite Restrictions

    https://www.boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=6188

Mumbai Saga collected 2.75 crore nett on day one despite restrictions and the film did manage to grow in the evening where there were shows. Thew collections are pretty similar to what Roohi did on Mahashivratri last week and a good bulk of the business has come out of the bigger multiplexes.

This is as it got the widest release outside multiplexes as a few cinemas across the country opened up for the film and the numbers in these places are decent considering they have hardly seen any collections in a year. The film has been hit in Mumbai circuit by restrictions but it still beat the number Roohi did last week on Mahashivratri.

Roohi collected around 50 lakhs nett on day eight which was a 40% drop from the previous day and a little more than expected. This is probably due the competition from Mumbai Saga and due to the limited audience out there.

The drop means the film will not go towards the 25 crore nett total and will have to target a 20 crore nett plus total which would not be much if this film released pre the pandemic but at the moment you take it as the collectoions are getting harder to come day by day with more and restrictiosn being applied.

Rani Mukerji’s Tina Malhotra in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai had won over fans. Not many know that the role had been offered to Aishwarya Rai earlier.
However, not many know that Rani – who celebrates her birthday today – was not the first choice for the role. Twinkle Khanna, Karisma Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai had been offered that role before her. Aishwarya, in fact, had spoken about what made her refuse the role a year after KKHH became such a huge hit. Aishwarya was new to the industry at that time and was not sure of the 1998 film will be the perfect fit.
“I’m in a catch-22 situation, really. Though I’m a newcomer, I’m compared with all the senior actresses,” Aishwarya had said a year after KKHH came out, “If I’d done the film, it would have been tittered that, ‘Look, Aishwarya Rai is back to doing what she did in her modelling days—leaving her hair straight, wearing minis, and pouting glamorously into the camera.’ Ultimately, the hero goes back to the more real person. I know if I’d done Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I would have been lynched.”

I do not agree with Marcus that she’s a bad actress; she was FANTASTIC in Bajirao,,,,she literally made me cry – but anyway, I am crier often..so that isn’t a metric.

I agree PC has always been a hustler, and what’s admirable is how committed she is to the hustle, if PR was all it took to make it where she is, Deepika would be way ahead of her, given how her PR even pushed affair rumors with Vin Diesel though she was dating Ranbir (!).
Despite her fake persona, there’s no denying the talent of an actress who was the standout in Barfi and Bajirao Mastani (both of which had ferocious performances from their male leads), not to mention how much eye candy she was during her Don phase.

Salman’s expressionless act notwithstanding (compensated by the fact that he was a seriously good looking guy in his youth) Aamir’s comic timing is top notch and matched almost frame to frame by an outstanding Raveena Tandon (this lady was a diva even during the days of hideous make up & bushy brows!) and a perfectly massy & dumbed down Karishma (a perfect image in all those Govinda films). Unlimited nostalgia…

    • It is a silly song but those days there were a lot of innocence in those bollywood films that serve as good nostalgia. I was watching parts of Ishq on TV a few days back, and felt the same.

These Khans have come a long way since those 90s days. Now at their mid-fifties it will be interesting to see how long they keep doing solo lead films. By 58, AB has shifted to father-figure roles from Mohabbatein – his comeback superhit.

Aamir and Srk have slowed down considerably by now. Aamir will probably have a couple of more releases till he passes 60 (LSC and one more film perhaps). SRK is trying to make a comeback and will probably release a few more. Salman will probably do masala as long as there are decent number of takers, although his films have been regularly underperforming over the last few years.

But at what point do these guys next door from the nineties shift to elderly roles for good? Or will they follow the Rajni graph and do one ups upon AB?

      Like

      • Would Big B have started doing elderly roles or indeed, come back to films after Agneepath if not for financial problems? I don’t think the Khans are going to face any such crisis that might make them go the Amitabh way. Perhaps not Rajni, but the Mammootty/Mohanlal/Kamal route where they play an undefined middle age till 70 seems more likely.

        Like

        • Great question. He would have gone that route I feel, but it wouldn’t have been forced if he didn’t have that 99 crore from Canara Bank hanging over his head. In the case of Bachchan, he needed a drastic reinvention, he was never considered a good-looking guy; so the prospect of him playing a hero was negated. [Remember KHAHEE? where he took off his goatee to reveal to the world his sagging, aged jowls?] My opinion is, he is a workaholic to the core. Being a Libran, like myself, we find it very difficult to displease people. I remember reading an article in Filmfare that the BIGGEST peeve Jaya has of him is that he just cannot say ‘NO’ to people and projects. And it isn’t about money. He just has to say YES and go to work. It pisses off people like us but that’s how he is – he will work with Hashmi rather than saying NO!! Inspite of the fact that Mr. Bhatt had taken Bachchan on in the 80s and ended up with eggs on his face!!!

The KHANS, except Aamir, I really do not see them transitioning into roles aged, but still owning them, like Amitabh in KHAKHEE or BLACK or SARKAAR..

Very happy to see Vijay Sethupathi win, along with Dhanush and Bajpayee, but what is it with giving Best Actor to two performers? Way better in any case than last year’s disaster of Khurrana and Kaushal, one in an overrated film and the other an overrated performance.

      • NO I agree Aman these awards have turned ridiculous. This was one thing I always looked forward to. Kangana did a fine job in PANGA; she actually IS a fine actress who can carry an entire film on her shoulders..be it TWM, PANGAA, or SIMRAN. Her performance in SIMRAN was out-standing. I have no words to describe her act in that movie. After Mads, if any heroine had the gumption to take up a hero-less movie and own it up, it is Kanganga.

I am horribly disappointed with CHICHORE getting the best film. It is one of the MOST mediocre films ever made. And with one of the worst performances from SSR. He was OK as the young guy channeling and imitating SRk. But as the bearded guy, he was seriously intolerable.

As I have mentioned umpteen times before, SSR was an average to below-average actor. To hell with outsider/insider debate, let us be honest to SSR, respect his life/legacy, and tell it like it is. Just as I speak out loud on 3rd-rate privileged ‘actors’ like Farhan Akhthar, Arjun Kapoor, or Hashmi…

        • Instead of Chichhore, they could have given an award to Sonchiriya or even given him a special mention for Sonchiriya and Chichchore (if Mohanlal can win one for Pulimurugan, hey?).

I wouldn’t call him an average to below average actor, he is certainly good, Kai Po Che, MSD, Sonchiriya, Byomkesh and even Kedarnath attest to this. Average would Dhawan, Farhan and Emraan Hashmi. His problem was often that he messed up charm with neurosis (taking the SRK approach and never really nailing it) and he was nowhere a natural.

        • Irrfan K anyday. Rishi was one of those mediocre spoilt privileged Kapoor brats who’d have been a sidekick has it not been for his surname. Although compared to Ranbir, Rishi appears like an AB but putting him in context against an Irfan who in my opinion is perhaps one of the best on screen actors the “world” has seen in the last 3 decades is futile. Irfan’s effortlessness in every genre he played from drama (Namesake, Lunchbox) to comedy (Hindi Medium, Piku) to thrillers (Maqbool, Talvar) was astonishing. He was capable of single handedly elevating the status of substandard films like New York & Madari and in my living memory is the only artist who not just held his own, but even outshone Amitabh Bachchan at times in Piku.

          Like

        • There is no doubt that Irrfan was a great actor, but then this amusing tendency to pull down any and everybody against one is unwarranted. You make it seem as though Rishi was no better than Randhir or Rajiv, which is absolutely false.

As for his lineage, look at his contemporaries, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharamendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Rajesh Khanna, all self made yet except Sanjeev Kumar, can any claim to have made better films or be better actors than Rishi K? The 70s were an era where this nepotism obsession hadn’t seeped in yet. In fact, next to Amitabh, the second best contemporary star in terms of acting skills and legacy would another Kapoor (Shashi). Perhaps you need to be reminded of the time he tore into shreds and ate up a certain Hrithik Roshan playacting Amitabh in Agneepath. He was no doubts a great natural entertainer and a well talented actor who only with Do Dooni Chaar, Aurangzeb, Agneepath and Mulk began finding the right roles.

That the Dadasaheb Phalke is a farce would be well evident from the fact that Sridevi was denied the same honour as Vinod Khanna. Or that only 6 women have been awarded till date.

If I had it my way, I’d give it to both, if only to celebrate two of the ’70s great cinema traditions: the masala and the offbeat and what better way to honour it than by awarding the admired actor and the beloved star after the awarding of the most admired and beloved star actor of his generation across the world.

You are NOT going to get a Haley’s comet like Amitabh who can straddle across Mukherjee and Desai and Mehra’s films! Rishi belonged to that era. He was comfortable in CHAANDI wearing sweaters as he was in EK CHADDR MAILI SI. Inspite of him being strait-jacketed, he truly gave us memorable films and songs; within the parameters of the Hindi film industry in the ’80s ….

With Iffran, I sure as hell connected with him ‘DIL SE’ more than Rishi…But it is not that Irrfan changed the industry…it is just that the industry was MORE open to accept unslottable actors like Irrfan…

        • Sorry, nothing about Kangana makes her a competent performer except when she’s perhaps playing a role that’s close to her own mercurial volatile personality. As for Rishi, he might not be a Rajiv but that doesn’t justify his overrated stature.

          Like

        • I will agree to disagree here. But Rishi needs to be appreciated for his acts in the ’70s and ’80s films.

And pray, tell me, where will you find actors like Rishi or Kamal or Amit to enact songs? Performances from Rishi in songs themselves stand for an ovation! Is it easy to enact to those lyrics? Some of them might be inane, most of them genuine! Why is it that actors like Bajpayee and Nasser suffer when it comes to songs? Give these songs to our Hollywood counter-parts and they seriously will be shaking in their shoes – no pun intended.

Every song that Kishore, Bachchan enacted, that Rishi enacted, is a shining reflection on their talent. Kishore in HALF TICKET, Bachchan in SHAAABI or MKS, RISHI in PREM ROG or COOLIE, these are gems! It takes hell a lot of acting to give physicality to those words and music! KE PAG GHUNGAROO is an almost 8 minute song, and Bachchan pulled it off with the reputation of being one of the weakest dancers in the Hindi film industy!!!

In an absolutely brilliant serious film like HEY RAM, Hassan utilized the Marathi history and Kolhapur and inserted lavanis..Why? Our oral history is different from the west. We cannot/and should not separate these things. Just like the westerns either from Wayne or Tom Ford cannot separate the Indian culture from the white battles…

        • Well, meaningless songs in the middle of a plot in itself is a bad idea. All this talk of “songs being the essence of Indian cinema” has never gone down well unless its either for invoking genuine laughs (Meri Pyari Bindu, Ye Raat aur Ye Doori etc) or taking the story forward (Ghanan Ghanan, Basanti no dance). Anyhow Rishi’s dialogue delivery has always been questionable except when he’s in the romance genre. Perhaps my disinterest in romantic films & love stories without any real theme (99% of Hindi commercial romantic movies) might be one of the reasons.

      • Good conversation on Rishi/Irfan.

Not much to add but I think it’s easy to survive in the type of films Irfan was doing vs what Rishi was doing (70s thru 90s). Rishi had made a name for himself, had few good solo films as well as multistar films where he complemented the lead star very well and held his ground. Not sure but remember reading about it in early 80s that either Amar Akbar Anthony or Naseeb actually had more Rishi screen time than Amitabh.

Rishi had (chocolaty star) tag so he was at disadvantage somewhat but survived 70, 80 and 90s. To finish up, he actually had some very good films/performance towards the end.

Irfan is a good actor but in all his films, i see Irfan. In that sense, i think he is highly overrated, personally I would take Manoj Bajpayee any day over irfan.

On the film’s win at the prestigious awards, director Nitesh Tiwari told indianexpress.com, “It comes as a pleasant surprise actually. We weren’t expecting it at all. We are filled with mixed emotions because on one hand there is the happiness of getting a win and on the other hand there’s the feeling of loss of someone I was very close to. But I am sure Sushant would be very happy with this win wherever he is.”

Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin, who played the role of Derek, also remembered Sushant. “I feel incredibly grateful to have played the part of Derek and been a part of Chhichhore. It will always be a special film to me. Nitesh Tiwari and Sajid Nadiadwala captained this ship, and it was an ace team to have been on. • @Naveen I have no words to describe the incidents in Maha… from SCOTLAND YARD of India to ‘Bhangibhol’ yard — if you understand Marathi — it has come a full circle.

Papa Penguin and Baby/Kaccha penguins have ruined the city for good…Har Har Mahadev!!!

And then, there is that Ben Stokes Tikait who claimed that protests are apolitical, and now, he’s asking the ‘Barton’ manjo Bengalis to not vote for BJP…Go figure …

      • If at all one has to do corruption, here are my thoughts:

Vasooly from common people is so 80s now. Hafta, tolabaazi etc is on the face hooliganism.
I mean in a city like Mumbai, you can make money via working on welfare projects. Take a 10% cut but spend 90% on welfare or capacity building. Kam se kam kaam to hoga despite corruption, similar to what happens in corrupt free countries.

However, what just came out in Maha is an uneducated style of making money in Politics. It is regressive and devoid of creation.

  29. Top Fox producer dies from coronavirus

    By Oliver Darcy, CNN Business

    Updated 2106 GMT (0506 HKT) March 22, 2021

    He is only 52.

Spinato is one of several prominent news staffers to die from the coronavirus. A longtime NBC employee died last March, as did a CBS News executive.
Since the outset of the pandemic, Fox has downplayed the severity of the coronavirus. The network’s hosts have peddled misinformation about the virus and railed against restrictions put into place to protect public health. While Fox did air a Sunday night special in February devoted to the vaccines, the network’s top host, Tucker Carlson, has most recently used his nightly show to undermine public confidence in the vaccines.
Fox as a company, however, has taken precautions to protect its employees, following CDC protocols for mask-wearing and social distancing. Lachlan Murdoch, the chief executive of Fox Corporation, said in a memo recently that staffers should not expect to return to work until after Labor Day.

  33. Kangana is great in new trailer! Rocking!

  34. I thought Vidya Balan was perfect choice and was in talks till very long until the writer recommended Kangana and I was also not sure if she will suit the role especially as older Jayalalitha. But this is great trailer and Kangana is first rate especially for the younger portions and looks to be huge winning act! I do have some issues with makeup and speaking in the end. Overall the trailer is very well cut and though expected lines those who are aware of Jayalalitha’s life but this should do very well all over India and huge in Tamilnadu! One more National Award in the basket.

    • Another trivia: Kangana was 1st choice for Dirty Picture and Vidya was first choice for Jayalalitha’s biopic.

  38. Godzilla v Kong racked up very good first day collections as South India recorded strong collections especially Nizam / Andhra and Tamil Nadu. The first day collections of the film will be in the 5.5-6 crore nett range and may well finish up towards the higher end of the range when final collections come from the South.

The Hindi markets are struggling as we are looking at one third of the business coming from Mumbai, North, Central and Eastern markets while the South contribution will be 60% on a worst case scenario. The final numbers of the film could go above 6 crore nett.

Tamil Nadu leads the way for the film with the highest numbers across the country followed by Nizam / Andhra and then it is Mumbai and Karnataka. The film is easily the highest number post the pandemic for a Hindi or Hollywood film but it cant really be compared as business again is mainly coming from circuits where Hindi films have a limted market.

  41. One of the most intriguing spy dramas in recent times. The depth of the source material perhaps deserved an 8 part TV series however, the writers & the director have done a fine job in packing in an extraordinary tale of a British spy collaborating with a KGB agent in a near unbelievable tale of bravery and self sacrifice. Benedict Cumberbatch proves yet again why he’s one of the greatest actors of our generation. From Sherlock to Imitation Game to Strange to Courier, this guy just keeps outdoing himself over & over again. 4/5

    • The rebooted technical version of SHERLOCK HOMES is pathetic — to me at least. I understand it’s a big hit. The ENTIRE essence is lot; Holmes had dedicated a specific part of his brain to analysis; he was as per Doyle, damn good at CHEMISTRY, but HISTORY, he cared a crap. His thing was always that I have a limited brain, but I want to utilize it to 200 percent capacity! The whole thing about HOLMES was that he didn’t depend on the lab; he depended on his instincts to solve a crime … not much technology! In that sense, I would go with ELEMENTARY starring Jonny Lee Miller who brought about a perfect balance of brain and technology…

Jeremy Brett, to me, remains the ULTIMATE Holmes…

      • Sherlock working in the lab does find reference in a few of the novels every now & then. Season 1 & 2 were actually an extremely relevant adaptation in the 21st century context. But the silly characterization of Moriarty, the sexualization of Irene Adler & the fiasco called Mary Watson completely ruined the series for me. In fact its the underrated episodes are the one’s that do not involve any of these 3. A Study in Pink, Hound of Baskerville & the outstanding Lying Detective were the show stealers. For the mismanaged Moriarty & Mary Watson, Sherlock, Watson & Mycroft in particular were brilliantly enacted by Bemedict, Freeman & Gatiss. As for Elementary, the lesser said the better. Americans ain’t capable of a Sherlock as well as the Brits especially with howlers like a platonic female Watson 😉

  45. An excellent show hosted by the ever charismatic Naseerudin Shah (on screen charisma!) showcasing how Indian cricket has been synonymous with the Independence movement to the abolition of the caste system (an untouchable Palwankar Balu played with the elites long before Gandhi Satyagraha and Ambedkar’s reservation sham) to how the game we learnt and adapted to from our colonial masters (an image of Vinoo Mankad shaking hands with the Queen) has now become a medium of India’s economic prowess and self respect. For anyone ardent cricket lover who wants to know the legacy of the likes of Ranjit Singhji to Vijay Merchant to Vijay Hazare to Vinoo Mankad to MAK Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar, the spin quartet, Sunny Gavaskar to Kapil Dev and the modern masters Sachin, Dravid, Kumble, Azhar, VVS, Ganguly, MS Dhoni to Kohli.. its all in these 26 binge worthy episodes.

  47. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, T-Series head and son of late Gulshan Kumar, Bhushan Kumar, gave an update on the tentative timeline of the film. He said that Aamir Khan is currently focussed on his upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha and will start with Mogul after Laal Singh Chaddha’s release. “Tentatively we will start the film in 2022. I cannot give you an exact date right now, but in 2022 the film should go on floors. It should be a 2023 release or end of 2022,” Bhushan said.

    • Every year Bhushan Kumar gives this annual update that Mogul with Aamir will happen next year. Doubt if this will ever take off. Even the director is not waiting for this to happen anymore and has moved on to a project with Akshay Kumar.

Aamir at this point has better options for biopics – Bhavna Talwar’s Guru Dutt biopic and Anand L Rai’s Vishwanathan Anand biopic. Would be ridiculous if Mogul is chosen over these two. And if Aamir is looking for a more box office friendly film, then RS Paranna’s Champions remake suits the bill.

Anyways, seriously doubt if Aamir will announce his next anytime soon.
