Here’s to the Gandhis fucking it up again. This Punjab election just might end up revitalizing the Khalisatani movement, and then, welcome back to the 70s/80s.

When I checked in the morning, the Imdb score of Haseen dilruba was around 5.3. Now it is 6.2.
It is a sort of comedy thriller and nothing more. The mother in law provides some comic relief. And the circus at the police station.
    Too much blood and gore.

Sure would be interesting to know how a Kiran gets her alimony rights without converting. Liberals off course wont offer any opinions. Reena didnt convert and has been living in dirt poor conditions for her sin.

        • UCC’s time has come, but otherwise, in most Hindu Muslim marriages, conversion happens on paper for civil purposes while the couple follow faith as a personal matter. So, technically she still has her alimony rights.
I don’t think Reena is in dirt poor condition; she is the COO of the Paani Foundation. Aamir was said to have given her an alimony of 50 crore, which is a huge amount in 2002.

Among the character actors, Yamini Das as Rishu’s raucous mother, brings good comic relief and innocence. Music (Amit Trivedi) and cinematography (Jayakrishna Gummadi) compliment the film’s contrasting tone.

β€˜Haseen Dillruba’ has its moments of being preposterous and unbelievable, but it never stops being a delectably dark and defiant love story with a thrilling twist.

Ever since Kiran came to Aamir’s life his creative brilliance excelled. From Lagaan till Dangal, Kiran was a pillar in their creativity. I always thought they complemented each other and a lot of Aamir’s decade long success had Kiran’s influence directly or indirectly. One can see the difference in his films before, during and after Kiran.

Issues started post Dangal and we can see the downfall is evident. What Aamir does from now would decide if the fall will be a crash or a gradual fade. Tragic for fans!!

In fact, you look at Jeetendra in the mid 80s and Akshay today, the similarities are dead on. So, yes I’d prefer to be a fan of Shah Rukh and admire Aamir than blindly love Akshay (which even Twinkle is smart enough not to).

Being in open status will suit him better imo. The announcement has been made now as LSC has been pushed to aug next year. The buzz around his divorce will die out over the next year.

Incidentally, whenever there is a gap of 4 years between his releases, he has a divorce!

I dont think Aamir is not supporting his first wife and kids in some way. These things are personal. Aamir himself is not living a King’s life. Anyhow this will die down in the wake of other new news coming up.
Better to separate than live an unhappy life together.

Recently a spate of news items coming about murders, suicides among couples. The red suitcase case from Tirupathi, the doctor couple suicide in Pune, elderly couple suicide in Delhi,a mumbai father poisoning his kids after a fight with wife and so on. Due to unemplyment because of covid lockdowns and other reasons.

Husband and wife relationship is the most delicate and it needs maturity and level headedness to handle marriage. Nuclear families also lead to couples fighting without any restraint as there is absence of elderly parents intervening and counselling.

    • I don’t think anyone is forced to change name in the industry anymore. Reema Dutta was known as Reema Khan all the years but she also used her original surname. During Lagaan’s release she specifically wanted Reema Dutta in the credits as the relationship was on the verge of breakup. Kiran Rao didn’t change . Ash Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor Khan also added husband surname but without removing their family surname. Adding Khan is trendy in Bollywood like Malaika Arora Khan or Guari Khan. Anyways doesn’t say much, it’s either your dad’s surname or your husband’s surname.

In my family and many families we’re particular to not have father’s or husband’s surname to girls. They should have their own surnames.

This proves that we are too patriarchal that the very thought of husband changing his surname looks odd and ridiculous. He may wash dishes to help wife but he will not think of changing his surname after marriage.

It is good to know some women are allowed to retain their father’s surname. Here also it is mostly father’s, not mother’s.

        • I think, in the Indian context although I’m not a lawyer, conversions happen because the Muslim community has its own separate Law Board. Being a non Muslim married to a Muslim, one might not have the same inheritance or alimony rights. The Non Muslims (basically 1) I know convert on paper but follow their own faith. A similar thing happens in Bollywood afaik.

          Sounds complicated.
I’ve seen it play out here. Interracial marriages are not easy. First the hurdle of accepting each other, then getting support of families, then dealing with whispers of extended family. A lot of drama. Seen it work, seen it fail but failure not because of interracial aspect but just failure for other reasons.

Where it’s successful – the non X (the entrant into the new culture) puts up with a lot of change. Marriage is the last step. They’ve spent a lot of time together – less of what is to come is a shock. Where things happen hastily it’s always possible things go pear shaped.

Today you don’t have to accept ridiculous demands (unless you’re truly desperate – but then better to be single IMO).

It’s a level playing field if you desire that kind of fight.

On a separate note, Sanjana I would 100% take my wife’s surname….it’s the same as mine πŸ˜†

The Asian IMO has a lot of comforts but is dealing with all the looks of relatives and whispers. It’s all swings and roundabouts but if the couple are fearless and truly in love – nothing really can stop them from being happy.

There is good comedy talent in some sitcoms. While TMKOC lost its sheen long back, there is Wagle ki duniya 2 with Sumit Raghavan.

Though it gets too preachy sometimes, the comedy by actors is good to sustain it. Sumit and Deepak Pareek are good. They are shooting in some resort in Silvassa and without the older Wagles due to covid fear. Need some patience to watch some episodes.

And not so recent Sumit Sambhal Lega based on Everybody loves Raymond is also watchable. Namit Das, Satish Kaushik, Bharati Achrekar need special mention.

  42. Some interesting comments on Aamir and marriage above. I have not read all comments carefully so I may be misspeaking on my comments below”

While I’m no fan of aamir, I can easily say that you can take love-Jih@d out of the picture. He didn’t marry reena or Kiran for that. And if anyone suggests that, it says more about that persons thought process than aamirs.

I think most young people here won’t understand this, you have to age little bit and go thru life experience to understand this but I think aamir is somewhat honest to his marriage. By this I mean, if he was interested in someone else, he could just have an affair on side and not have to go thru this backlash, etc… He can have someone new every week on side while being married. So it’s not a lust thing.
I think he gets bored with time and wants change in life more than anything. So when he moved from reena, it wasn’t like he married some superhot model/actress. Even now, I think it’s more of marriage becoming stale.
Of course there is a possibility of with him aging, the lust is taking over. After all he is human. But again, he can easily have some young one every week and no one would know about it. With plenty of outdoor/foreign location shooting, anything is possible. But he chose to end the marriage and this is where I think he is somewhat being honest to his marriage.

      • Agree, but we humans are weak, some more than others. Also what good is staying together if staying together can potentially lead to worse life for kids than separated parents.

Celebs lifestyle and i assume thought process is little different but at regular level, the relationship can get very stressful and in some cases abusive. It’s better to part ways than live together where none is happy.

Re-watched this one and still wondering how some folks call this the greatest gangster film ever (even ahead of the Godfather!). Good solid storytelling was partly ruined by the caricature clown Joe Pesci & crooked faced De Niro with a fake Italian accent (he’s so much better just being American). The over the top cringing & screeching make this somewhat feel more like a Bollywood gangster flick (Satya) than the suave poise & flair of The Godfather. Good film but definitely not the greatest I’ve watched by a country mile (like most of Scorsese flicks, a hugely overrated film maker in my opinion).

A conversation between current SS members:

Sanjana: Checked out this *random and obscure* film on OTT. Didn’t like the violence. I don’t like violence of any kind, even when its suggested. The other *more obscure and more random* film on a different OTT platform was more interesting. It was cute and funny. I think I like teddy bears. Also, Aamir. Didn’t know he directed this film.

Munna: There is an interesting analogy about teddy bears and Aamir that I had observed. Check out this 17-year old comment I have carefully preserved:
    http://www.satyamshot.wordpress.com/1672537/noonegivesadamn

Naveen: Talking of teddy bears, did you know akshay kumar has signed 17 more films about nationalistic teddy bears, teddy bears for a social cause, teddy bears sporting a tuxedo, and teddy bears in a period setting. Is there any other actor in the history of the universe with as much versatility in teddy bears?

Marcus: I’m not here to discuss anything related to the topic but I can’t resist trolling Naveen. Jay would you help me out there?

Jay: (ignoring Marcus and replying directly to sanjana) I was into teddy bears when I was younger. Let me revisit sanjana’s film and see if my opinion on them has changed.

An Jo: I feel we’re missing the point here. Sanjana, while most of your observations make sense from a cultural standpoint and the relevance of teddy bears in the context of India’s independence, there’s a lot that is hinted upon but i cannot really pin it down. Allow my thoughts to settle down along the course of my writing so I could put in my two cents.
Oh wait, I’ve already written beyond what was intended.

Munna: An Jo on Teddy Bears and Aamir

Saket: Brilliant analysis An Jo, though though I might say your reading may be a little off from the cultural standpoint. I thought the impact of teddy bears on Indian cinema had less to do with the struggle for independence than it had to do with the Italian mafia of 1920s downtown. I agree with sanjana that violence on teddy bears cannot be justified even when it points to a larger picture of history repeating itself, but I dare say the makers had taken a risk that strangely did not misfire. In today’s world, however, it might be provoking for even the neutral observer because…
    (10 more lines)

Shivaay: Ha! Teddy bears. It’s a wannabe concept made by a downright pathetic filmmaker who has no idea about cinema and dreams of bringing Indian cinema to a global audience. He doesn’t even deserve any discussion but ridicule. Shame shame!

Aman Basha: Do you even know what you’re talking about? How can you simply disregard teddy bears just because you don’t like anything. Tedyd bears also deserve love.

Z: Forget it, I stopped expecting love on this blog the day satyam left. Now its filled with an army of teddy bear haters. I don’t want to name anyone, but I hope you get what I’m talking about.

SRK has become a miserable fellow. I remember he was trying to pitch Devdas as some sort of an all-time classic at the time of its release (along with KJo promoting it more than SLB!). He was clearly insecure after Lagaan’s release and probably during its making too. Makes me wonder why he chose a film with a period setting during that time when no one else was doing it.
If you notice the Chak De poster, it was very similar to the Lagaan one. (close up shot of the actor, and a picture of the team below).

And now after 20 years of Lagaan, SRK feels the need to put Devdas in the limelight too for its 19 years. I don’t really think the film has held up well. The music was fantastic, though

But had it not been for him, millions would not have seen Devdas. Remakes are fine. Its hard as an actor. Some credit to make an attempt should be given.

Songs were brilliant. Aish looked her best ever. Mads danced like a queen, despite looking a bit old. She looms better nowadays.

Devdas story is difficult for new gen to digest. But they did watch and SRK should get a large credit. He did entertain.

Settling for obscene mediocrity as always. Neither is SLB a capable film maker and nor is Shah Rukh a capable enough actor to pull off the intense panache that Dilip Kumar exhibited with the original. To remake a classic you first need film makers who can update the vision of the original yet retain the flavor & essence of the story. Sanjay Bhansali has never gone beyond his self indulgence of opulence and fancy dresses/sets towards the narrative or content of a theme. Barring Khamoshi every film of his has been a melodramatic cringe fest beyond the outer million dollar sugar coat.
