  1. Avatar2 looks like heading towards a 190cr plus first week. Looks on course to beat TKF and RRR (hindi).
Circus looks like the next disaster, unfortunately.

  2. Avatar 2 has done exceedingly well in India in week one. 190+ cr in 7 days is great. Hollywood releases usually dont do that well in second weekend and 80% drops are common. I think Avatar 2 may hold somewhat better than that. I would expect it to do at least 30 cr over second weekend (8+10+12). Anything more would be a bonus. Worldwide also the movie is faring below expectations; but may hold well over the holiday period.

I saw the film yesterday. A tedious, terrible borefest. Didnt mind the first film so much. From what I remember it was an enjoyable experience in theaters. But not so much this time.

Hype will take it to 1-1.2B worldwide in the final tally and will be a money-maker. But not a record blockbuster like other Cameron films. This is his weakest film in decades.

    • Ever since it came out in the open that the cost of Avatar 2 is $400M, i have been expecting a Brahmastra like scenario where box office collections wont be bad but the movie overall wont be much profitable. And the mixed reactions will hurt the prospects of the next part in the series. Cameron shud have moved on to other projects instead of beating around Avatar imo. Even Battle Alita was a better film than this.

    • Quite surprised by Cameron’s misfire here. 3hrs plus is too long nowadays for Indian films so Avatar 2 makes it a bit of a cock up.

      Liked by 1 person

      • It could have been easily edited into a 2hr movie as nothing much happens most of the time. But Cameron is in over-indulgent mode here. It seems like he took the first avatar success too much into his head to look at the sequel any objectively. I wonder why Studio execs at Disney didnt have much of a say here. I guess either Cameron’s reputation was too awe-inspiring or he is adept at keeping studio interventions away from his work.

The wannabe vibe is so evident in SRK’s new song that it’s unintentionally funny. Trying so goddamn hard

This is probably gonna make viewers laugh in the theatre. Seriously, no one ever thought this was gonna misfire?

Not watching this unless the reviews are good.

    • Even I am skipping Cirkus and Pathaan. Not sure of these 2 movies. There seems to be a lot of desperation from both Srk and Deepika’s end to make a comeback in Pathaan. And YRF is just being YRF, which obviously is not good.

On the other hand, Shetty seems over-confident with a poor product. Cirkus may be a rare flop from him. At best it will be an average grosser like Dilwale was.

The trailer was itself lacklustre for Cirkus. At least that was pretty good for Pathaan.

If Cirkus works, it will be only because of RS. And Given his track record of mediocre films, I assume this one won’t be any different.

God save Pathaan. They’re raising the WTFery bar with every subsequent song. I have a feeling this will be done and dusted before the first day is even over.

    • Obviously anything can misfire. Basically it’s a script written for action star and then put SRK into it. That’s the ‘newness” part. I agree that song is average and badly pictures but don’t see any issue with Srk dancing. That’s not an issue at all. All action movies have a dancing number with hero dancing. The reason movie can dissapoint is they are delivering average songs but then Vishal -Shekhar are done now. Story and action are different domains, let’s see how much That’s impacted. Action will be fine if they hired foreign action directors, rest all is story should be above average.

      • Watched VTK. For the first time, I liked GVM after Kamal’s serial murderers’ movie. I hate that so-called actor Simbaa or whatever he is known as. But he did a good job here. Kudos. A good, lyrical film with underpinnings of NAYAKAN and AGNEEPATH. Definitely watchable, and ARR’s score is magnanimous…

        • Simbu in the right hands/right role is a good talent. He is also multi faceted (music, lyrics, directs, writes etc) which makes him go over the top and try to do monkey tricks causing most people to hate him. I usually avoid his films as well, but his last two are pretty solid (Maanadu a time travel masala film which is extremely fun watch with a terrific SJ Suryah as villain) and VTV.

    • Interesting list, have not seen a few in here. Did not like RRR or KGF2 much and prefer Kantara over both. I saw it in theater in Kanada before it became big or was even posted on here so the hype did not impact my views. As a standard masala output it worked well for me as it has some great moments and I do believe the last 15 mins did the trick, the audience were left hypnotized and in a daze and that is how the word of mouth spread. I do agree it is overated, has some crass stuff in there (which unfortunately was a realistic portryal of Indian youth imho) and I was surprised at the crazy hyperbolic reactions to Kantara a month after I watched it! I would rate 777 Charlie significantly higher and is possibly my best film last year (need to think of my list actually). I also loved Minnal Murali in Malayalam although that came in 2021. Major was good and I always liked Advi Sesh. His recent Hit 2 is decent well made tight thriller, check it out if you like his work.

People are hoping they get such a clean slate for release and here we have SOLO release in Circus for all Christmas and New Year holidays and then further till Jan 25th, like a free month and yet it Circus doesn’t do well, it’ll be biggest flop IMO. You don’t get such free release dates ever! Pathaan should have released this time instead.

    • If Cirkus fails as the advance is indicating, Avatar 2 may as well take advantage of the holidays and beat Brahmastra’s 257 cr total in India. IF it sustains v well over next 2 weeks it can even challenge RRR’s 274 cr hindi total.

Munna was the umpire, and I was the third umpire.
Z, Master, and Marcus team appealed for a run out and the decision went to me, i.e. the third umpire. I mistakenly got Shivaay out even when he was well within the crease. An argument erupted between both the teams on the field. But they ended up fighting on whether AB is the greatest actor of all time or not. 30 minutes later, the argument got political.
Munna tried to defuse the tension but gave up after a while and returned to the stands to have cold beer.

  25. Rohit Shetty will bounce back, for sure. Singham 3 and the next Golmaal are going to work, no doubt about that.

For Ranveer, it is tougher. He will need someone like SLB to back him again. The last 3 flops will have hurt his prospects considerably. With Cirkus flopping, there goes the chance of any Simmba 2 from materialising. Shetty dropped SRK as soon as Dilwale underperformed and moved on to new pastures and returned to the Devgan camp in the process.

When you open a film at 2cr (JJ), it puts into question your fans following. The main problem for Ranveer is that his major few successes have been attributed to SLB and Rohit Shetty. Even if Cirkus was working, everyone knows that the credit would be going to RS.

Right now, only someone like SLB or maybe Karan Johar may pull him out of the doldrums. He may get bit role in Singham 3, but if I were to bet, that may be as far as he can get with any future project with RS.

  28. Rohit Shetty has delivered a flop/disaster after Sunday back in 2008. This wont hurt him as he will get back to Devgn camp and do franchise films in Singham 3 and Golmaal 5 next. Dilwale may have underperformed, but it was still a average/below avg fare at box office.

Ranveer is indeed in a tight spot now and a lot will depend on KJO film with Aliya. Ranbir is in a lot better position after Brahmastra success and with a decent line-up of films in 2023.

Bollywood is ending its disastrous year with yet another disaster in Cirkus. And with its massive underperformance another third class film from Hollywood is now going to do 300 cr or so. This year will be remembered as the year where southern (KGF2, RRR) and hollywood (Avatar 2) films beat the crap out of bollywood films.

“What makes Mukhbir a gripping watch as well as a pleasant one is the way Delhi of the 60s has been brought alive. The vintage cars and scooters look pretty on one side, and the infusion of ghazals in the plot accentuates the visual appeal on the other. Also, what comes as a huge surprise is when a short and straightforward, then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964-1966), says, “Gentleman, Kashmir may be a dream for Pakistan but I want Lahore for real.” Had the series released in a theatre, whistles and claps were definitely guaranteed. India taking a lead in proving that non-violence cannot be misinterpreted as cowardice, that is something the Indian audience has hardly ever seen being realised on screen. Not all from the current generation are aware of India actually crossing the line of control to capture Lahore in September, 1965.”

2022 was off year due to covid, but lets not hide away from the fact that going forward, south films along with films from USA will score big every year in Hindi market.

South and USA will enjoy boycott free release while our own hindi audience/media will be busy pulling down hindi films for one reason or another (mainly due to religion/politics) and in that process, outsider (south/USA) will enjoy success.

        • Rohit Shetty is huge director, if not the biggest director of Bollywood, for the brand value and audience. Most of them accept it without any issue but the issue arises if he himself starts saying that. Even after the tremendous effort in opening theaters and holding off Sooryavanshi, Rohit never claimed fame but this time around it was very different and it was many who noticed the difference. I mean the whole interviews were just how Rohit Shetty is master film maker and his connect. Bollywood Hungama’s interview was like, let’s not talk all about movie…let’s just ask individually everyone what we’re you doing when you received Rohit’s Cirkus movie offer and what was your reaction? Khilnani said, Rohit Shetty can pick anyone from the industry and cast them in his movie, so how hard is the process like whom to give chance now or whom to select now. Everyone went on and on that they couldn’t believe that they got offered Cirkus and whole interview was about Rohit Shetty as some sort of God and not a film maker.

Either ways, Rohit Shetty is intelligent and he’ll be back right away and also change his attitude. Ranveer Singh will be impacted but so far everyone is just calling out Rohit Shetty for Cirkus’s flop. Next is Singham 3 and Golmaal 5 and both will be huge blockbusters as expected.

He needs to think make full on masala movie like south directors instead of half hearted ones. He still have better bet to get a hit out of Singham 3 and Golmaal 5 instead of new ventures.

    Monday 26 December 2022 23.15 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Avatar – The Way Of Water will have a huge second Monday as collections look set to be better than the Friday at around 12-13 crore nett. The film is recording collections better or in a similar range to Friday in most circuits.

This would mean that the film has collections close to 70 crore nett in the second week and with the holiday period on you cannot rule out a second week of 100 crore nett which is out of this world and will be a first Hollywood in India.

Avengers Endgame had collected around 76 crore nett in week two and that record will be smashed easily in just 5 days of the second week. This second Monday also gives it a shot at the 367 crore nett lifetime total of Avengers Endgame. Although it is a long way off it does now have a chance for the first time since it released last week.

Drishyam 2 has also seen fantastic collections on its sixth Monday as collections could finish 50-60% more than its sixth Friday. The film will now have an extraordinary sixth week which will be among the top five in history and maybe even top three.

The film is getting huge benefit of the failure of Cirkus and may even start doing better business than Cirkus next weekend. Cirkus has taken a hit on Monday as expected and collections will be down more than 50% and it may well be looking at collections in the 3 crore nett range and maybe even less.

Exclusive | 20 years of Kaante: Sanjay Gupta reveals how Amitabh Bachchan refused to abuse, his near-fatal accident

Released on December 20, 2002, Kaante acquired cult status over the years and is remembered for its style, dialogues and music. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty and Kumar Gaurav. among others.

So, what’s the origins of Kaante?

The whole world thinks Kaante is Reservoir Dogs, no it isn’t. there are a few similarities in the second half of the film but the genesis of Kaante was the Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri & Sons Jewellers robbery case, which was later made into the film Special 26. Till today that’s unsolved. My idea was, what if they were six boys from Dagdi Chawl, who conduct the most successful heist in the history of India, go back to Dagdi Chawl which is suddenly surrounded by cops.

At what point did the Reservoir Dogs inspiration come in?

There was a producer from Los Angeles called Raju Patel. He wanted to do a Hindi film and suggested to do a film based over there, as he would organise everything. I told Sanju, ‘Ok, so the story could be that all these guys are based out of Los Angeles.’ That’s the time that more than Reservoir Dogs, I was inspired by The Usual Suspects—a group of strangers who meet in a lock up.

And I doubt the makers are going to make substantial profits from global collections looking at the COP. Yes, production, big director vs. small director, big stars vs small, ETC… There are countless way you can dissect it.

End result is, the TOTAL gets looked at, no matter how it was achieved.

It will be like saying Kohli scored century but since 80 runs came from a bowlers who are a batsman primarily and not a bowler, that will not be counted. In the end, the TOTAL matter, no matter how it was achieved.

Despite your ill wishes and bad weather, avatar put up solid numbers on sunday and monday in USA. Lets see how it does coming weekend. 1 BILLION will be reached WW. Not many movies can do that. Just because Shaan didn’t do business of Sholay, doesn’t mean it was a washout.

        • That’s an incorrect statement going in rounds. Cameron said that was in the 1st presentation to the studio heads and they were shocked but it was nowhere close to that. Secondly, as per some other articles, it goes into breakeven after 800 million, which it already has done it.

Secondly, (I posted above)Cameron says that part 3 is 95% shot and it’s been designed in such a way that it part 2 under performs heavily, they’ll wind up with part 3 and end with a trilogy OR else he has parts 4 & 5 to shoot in next 2 years together.

So, even ending with part 3 is also good idea and make only 4,5 after some 5-8 yrs break if there’s demand.

It took re-runs for the film to break even. Either ways, Avatar 2 has fallen well short of expectation and being unable to match Dr Strange 2 kinda poor films in its domestic run is testimony to its underperformance. No one said Avatar is being made for domestic market. It’s reach is world wide. Cameron would be just as happy if 1 billion is made just from USA or from Worldwide, end result is same for him.

This is true for 1st avatar, and a lot of other films, they collect huge globally, it doesn’t need to be blockbuster in USA alone.

Avatar 2 and 3 were shot together so this 300+ budget isn’t just for one movie, it’s for two. They’re making plenty of money on this and it’s not like it crashed, it’s still running good all over including India…

USA, Saturday was $15 million, Sunday was $25 million and Monday was $26 million. I won’t be shocked if Tuesday is close to $20 million. Tuesdays the ticket prices are cut in half in most US theatres but more audience coming in should put it at good total for Tuesday too.

So when a film falters in its primary domestic market (which is always the primary target audience for any industry), give the usual worldwide performance excuse like true SRK fanboys have been doing since the days of MNIK and Ra1. Anyhow the fact that its done $1B worldwide in itself is way too much for a movie as mediocre as this. Not that the first one was anything great but part 2 is a colossal misfire in every way apart from its visuals. As for the lack of Hindi films in the top, Dangal is still India’s highest global grosser for now while the footfall records of Awara, Sholay & Caravan cannot be broken even by the likes of Rajamouli just yet. A couple of poor calender years cannot tarnish an 8 decade old legacy of Hindi cinema.

Of course not, not at all but at the same time, first step of tackling any problem is realizing that there’s a problem. And there is problem of South and USA films making big bucks in Hindi market. Covid didn’t impact these movies. I don’t mean to sound that south/usa films shouldn’t be allowed to release or that i’m against those films but they are doing a damage to our own hindi films. Our film makers needs to realize this and come up with better products. 1 or 2 bad years can’t and will not erase glorious bollywood history but realize that there’s option for public now which wasn’t there before or it was at limited interest and availability. Now Avatar can open on as many screen as Hit maker Rohit Shetty film. That was not the case in 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, etc… until past decade.

Hindi audience is beginning to latch on to south and usa films. There are big hindi films coming up in 2023 but i will guarantee you 50% of those big films will not have a clean release. they will be bombarded with boycott, etc… While south/usa films are enjoying clean up-beat release.

There is a problem and it needs to be addressed with all united. Film makers needs to get back to making good masala films instead many are making films with political tones and most of these film fail because people are fatigued by it.

However, it remains a fun watch for history buffs or fans of the spy genre. In essence, it’s the Tom Clancy brand at its best, which is exactly what you want if you’ve been watching the show from the start.

Without spoiling how the third season plays out, the finale does do justice by vindicating Ryan, the end ultimately justifying his means, and setting up for the fourth and final season, which was confirmed by Amazon Prime Video in May 2022.

As the list reveals, only five of the aforementioned eleven films are made in Hindi, the others being dubbed versions of either regional Indian films or Hollywood films. Interestingly, five of the said 11 films are sequels, all of them being the second parts of earlier hits. The sequels are K.G.F. Oppenheimer and Nolan’s return to character oriented cinema :

As I watched (and rewatched) the teaser of Nolan’s next Oppenheimer, one cannot but help noticing the master film maker’s return to character oriented cinema, a brand of story telling that has made him one of the finest film makers of contemporary times. Not that films like Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet were mediocre by any yardstick (such is the genius of Nolan that even his underwhelming films are perhaps few of the decade’s best!) but the entire idea of building a plot around the central protagonist(s) is something Nolan seemed to have forsaken in exchange for larger than life concepts where characters fitted in as nothing more than pawns.

Considering films like Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Inception, these are stories weaved around a set of characters and their obsessions and eccentricities that make the central characters so intriguing and fascinating that as a viewer one cannot help but stay invested in their (mis)adventures. Back home when we refer to stuff like the commercial masala cinema, they tend to follow the same template of a larger than life protagonist facing off against an equally larger than life & menacing adversary (from the times of Sholay and Deewaar right until stuff like War, RRR and KGF).

With films like The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet, Nolan the film maker seemed to have shortchanged his characters for a conceptual brand of story telling where the entire hypothesis appears to be the main protagonist with the characters fitting in like puppets as per the maker’s vision & convenience (think films like 83, Pink and Zindagi na milegi dobara back home). With Oppenheimer being a passive biopic of Robert J Oppenheimer the physicist, we can hope to witness the character building exercise from Nolan yet again (perhaps for the first time since Cobb’s Inception) which perhaps makes this film as one of the most anticipated of 2023. The fact that the leading man is being portrayed by the versatile Cillian Murphy only makes it better.
