  1. Actually managed to get to the cinema for a couple of movies, missed out on drishyam 2 because the one show was sold out on 7th Friday!
Avatar 2 – I did enjoy this but definitely it could have been trimmed by at least 30mins. 3 hours is too long for this kind of story. I’m not surprised it is showing legs. Much better story than the first movie.

Whitney Houston I Want To Dance With Somebody – I do like the musical drama format. A great great voice for the ages but a pretty average film overall. Should have been darker given the story.

  2. Saw The White Lotus (Season 2, HBO) ; the sea waves symbolism and it’s juxtaposition with story, is good. Liked the last episode. It is more of a talking comedy. Every thing revolves around sex (and consequent relationship dynamics) which could be problematic to many.

She Said – Based on sexual abuse allegation expose against Harvey Weinstein. Quite bland; you don’t emotionally feel for the victims. On similar topic, Spotlight was a much better movie.

    • Saw The White Lotus (Season 1); Story is set in a Hawaii resort. I found it better than Season 2 in terms of plausibility. Well acted. It is entirely possible that you don’t like such dramas because it is based on quirkiness of the characters (each one of them) and their interaction dynamics.

  3. Happy Valley – strong show. The Yorkshire setting is very reminiscent of lots of British TV shows. Gives the show an edge on humour side which is there in conversational exchanges throughout. A great set of performances from the 2 main lead protagonists. I preferred the first season the most.
Plenty of masala, drama moments. The setting and backdrop is very much like a Soap drama setting and even the storyline could easily belong in a TV soap. What’s different is it’s very hard-hitting moments and a bit of gore.

  4. The Romantics – In end this could just be called ‘the making of YRF’ and it would make more sense…First 2 episodes are better. Rest is pointless.

  5. Highly recommended; Happy Valley, Severance, Bad Sisters & Slow Horses. Latter 3 all on Apple TV. Former is on BBC.

  6. The Valhalla Murders – Icelandic show on Netflix. I really enjoyed this. Excellent production values, scenic background. Story takes a while to unfold, last few episodes are full of twists and turns. Recommended!

Watching The Consultant starring Christoph Waltz. Evil incarnate. An interesting premise with a twist at the end of every episode.

  8. Black Bird – must watch! What an act by the actor who plays Larry. One of the best single seasons of any show I’ve seen.

  9. John Wick – did not think much of the 1st film and won’t carry on
Boston Strangler – recommended. Keira Knightley is really good in this crime thriller set in 1960s based on a true story.
Ted Lasso – watched first 2 seasons. The show has had so much praise. I’m finding it an easy watch with the US/British language humour the main amusing ingredient, otherwise pretty average.

OTOH Chor Nikal key bhaga is a superb thriller with so many twists and turns. Maza aa gaya .

This one is a pure bollywood drama .

Blue Lights [BBC] – Good show based in Belfast. Cop drama with office dynamics and mob backdrop.

Different atmosphere vs Line of Duty, latter more around interrogation techniques and Blue Lights I felt little lighter in tone till the fantastic final 2 episodes.

    Definitely recommend!

The Last Thing He Told Me (Apple TV) – decent watch. Just a very different genre, thriller/mystery – not use to watching it and maybe why I enjoyed it. Production values on Apple TV are the best.

  15. Rewatched “Thirteen Days”, a political thriller on Cuban missile crisis (quite liked except showing military people as stupid/war mongers). Also rewatched, “Bridge of Spies” in similar genre. If you like thrillers with lots of talking drama, they are quite good.

  21. Avatar: The way of water…I think movie is okay..there is too much of water scenes of no consequence ..movie is more than three hours! I think Cameron was smart to move from Forest to water..so visually it is a different movie. But I think fighting and scenes to get out of tumbled floating vehicle reminded of old movies including Titanic. If I am Cameron, I wouldn’t go this path of multiple movies on same/similar theme. Ending has enough fodder for next installment.

  23. Back from Oppenheimer. It’s masterful storytelling and great acting. Thorough in all details. It could have been leaner is my only quib. 3 hours non stop is difficult though here the pace picks up so it keeps you captivated.
Excellent casting too. So glad Cillian Murphy got such a role and he’s practically in most scenes.

    • Saw Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX…was blown away at start of the movie but after some time I could see many scenes are regular 70 mm..there is seamless transition between IMAX and non-IMAX scenes. Story is engaging but very long..You need to be aware of senate confirmation and political part of an investigation. I think Science was not complex..Apart from Cilian and Downey, I don’t think there was scope of acting for others. There are too many things happening at thriller pace. Emily Blunt was effective only when she is repudiating the charges. Florence Pugh’s Gita scene was fleeting, and not needed.

Also saw Brendan Faser’s The Whale..It is a little difficult watch but in end quite a satisfying drama on relationships. I think acting was very good throughout (Brendan, Daughter, ex-wife, missionary, nurse).

  25. Neeyat starring Vidya Balan is so frikking bad that it was a task to finish the last hour.
How are these projects given a go ahead. Vidya Balan- first- Gaslight and now Neeyat , what has happened to her.
Shefali Shah in a two minute role was far more effective than Vidya.
Guns and Gulab- the worst series that I wasted my time in recent times. Raj and DK went too overboard in trying to recreate the 80-90s.

  29. Forced viewing RARKPK- I read a few reviews and knew my dear wife would like it and I wouldn’t. She went to watch it with my sister, her 2 aunts and 3 cousins – all women. Thank god I avoided that evening. Ever since then the 5 girls have egged me to watch it.
These types of movies really irk me because they are more wannabe than genuine. Ranveer is OK but there is hardly any chemistry with Alia. Kjo cannot make a movie without a reference to a past movie.

This is convoluted progressiveness. It deserves nothing more than **
As usual KJo delivers another manipulative attempt that drags on. First half light and fluffy, second half an attempt at something progressive that ends up superficial.
There are attempts at creating Mohabbatein level conflicts between Jaya (narayan shankar) & Alia (Raj Aryan) and countless references to YRF/dharma films. You may as well watch the Romantics!

  32. The Glory (Korean) Web series – highly recommended. 16 episodes and a wonderful revenge saga. My first adventure into K Drama and it’s a very easy watch. Actors all look so young and the story is excellent. The show has everything from the carthatic emotional revenge to a bit of gore (but not too much), the underlying theme of bullying and a silent central romantic track.

    • Try ‘Stranger’ (Korean) and ‘Signal’….

          Like

        • Glory is a fun show and mainly a revenge saga. Stranger is much more and also a lot more difficult to follow. Subtitles for Glory I could follow easily but with Stranger it moves a bit quicker. But no doubt Stranger is amongst the best OTT stuff I’ve watched ever.
I’m into Season 2 now and it’s different to Season 1. But Season 1 is something I may have to watch again one day.

  33. Stranger (Korean) Season 1 – scintillating, intricate, intriguing, tense. Just wow! The show is a crime thriller, it’s full of drama. 16 episodes and if I recall only the 3rd one had a little dip but every other episode was superb. Episodes 13 onwards leading to the end are full of emotions especially as a lead character is killed off.

    • Second season is quite good in terms of drama and tussle between departments, but thrill element is no match to season one. I hear third season is sanctioned with different cast. Next you can try ‘Signal’ and ‘Beyond evil’.

      Like

    • Stranger (Korean) Season 2 – the pace in Season 2 is slower and the first few episodes are pretty much teasers to set up the excellent last half dozen or so episodes. Everything slowly clicks into gear. The heights of the first season are too tricky to reach considering the characters lost. Still if I was to compare both seasons…Season 1 is one of the best seasons of any show I’ve watched and S2 is highly recommended.

  34. Finally caught Thiruchitrambalam on Prime. A lovely emotional movie with Dhanush and Nitya Menen as leads. Nitya Menen is an inspired piece of casting and manages to steal the movie from Dhanush which is no small feat. Bharatiraja as the grandfather and Prakash Raj as the father are very well cast too. What i liked about the movie is how simple and understated it was even in the emotional scenes. Some nice family sentiments, natural dialogues and the chemistry between Dhanush and Nitya menen makes it a good watch with family and friends.
Was a blockbuster on release but was not found on any OTT for over a year..

  35. Kaala Paani on Netflix…decently made for sprawling and complex relationships; I think it excels where characters have to make decision when they are in certain situation; it doesn’t shy away from reality of life which involved morality questions….. Scheming Young police officer, Father (of kids) acted well…

-It could have become better if they trimmed 1-3 episodes; I was not sure about how people were travelling between islands..

    – Ending is somewhat vague, so there is possibility of second season or they could end it after season 1..

    – Ashutosh Gowarikar is there as LG and did a decent job..

  38. The Railway Men (Netflix) – Mostly fictional web series around Bhopal Gas tragedy of 1984 (also has 1984 Sikh riot embedded in story). Uneven in screenplay. Kay Kay is good, so Is Babil Khan..Madhavan and Juhi roles are not properly written.

  39. Beyond Evil (Korean):
Another superb show. The first episode is misleading but thereafter the show has incredible highs in the middle. The mid season reveal is a great peak. The Korean shows know exactly how to mix drama, comedy (brief light moments), tension and emotional punches. Even brief moments of exploring romantic angles and falling into that trap are avoided. The pace is slower than The Glory & Stranger, the storyline is grimmer but still a very topsy-turvy show. Highly recommended!

    • Once you watch Korean TV shows (especially the thriller dramas), others look second grade.

Try “Signal”…”The Good detective” is not bad but not at same level.

  41. Watched ‘The Railyway Men’. This is the best work ever on the Bhopal tragedy. I’ve seen earlier movies and documentaries on this subject but this is truly outstanding work and YRF has really hit it out of the park. The director, long time assistant in YRF is son of Rahul Rawail and has got right genes and really is perfectionist in the sense of creating the setup and extracting performances. Everyone really did well but top 2 performances are easily KK and Babil Khan who really gave a nuanced performance and really deserves to get more work.

  42. Crash Landing On You (Korean) – A very popular TV series. This is in the teerjerker genre. The show’s backdrop is against a South Korean heiress who accidentally lands in North Korea and is taken in by a North Korean army man. What follows is quite a lengthy saga.
There is a lot of comedy, tongue in cheek humour poking at the socialist vs capitalist background of the two countries. Though this is quite lengthy. The show could have been trimmed, each of the 16 episodes is well over 1 hour. Still the 2 central characters deliver a cute love story aided by several sub plots.
It is quite Bollywood in treatment in parts. Overall a light, sometimes intense story.

Mixing sport, into a high school setting across 3 generations with rivalry, friendship, family backdrop both sides of the coin (functioning families, dysfunctional families, families with different needs/desires), romance – all loaded with talented performances, tons of cheeky/funny moments, grief, tension…show packages so much – takes you on a journey that we’ve all been through in part.
