Rocky’s Viewings (updated)

Khufia : I liked it a lot. The good thing was that it was not boring or give a feeling of stretched ( except maybe Tabu and her son’s scenes) .
Wamiqa after Jubilee , Charlie Chopra and now Khufia is emerging to be a Top class actor. Her solo dance performance in a Bikini ney dil jeet liya , by god kee kasam, kya curves hain.

the actor who played the mother is just too good, what a find. The BGM is very effective. I am so glad that unlike in Charlie Chopra VB did not recruit anyone from Naseer khandaan.
Overall, I was able to finish it in one setting with some single malt. Ending was satisfying, no artsy – woke type jhamela in this movie for a change.

Will add that the actor who played the role of mother will win several awards, I think Wamiqa should too. Tabu as cigarette smoking Raaaa agent is extremely effective. The movie has been funded by Government of Alberta. Recent events in Kanaddda have an uncanny resemblance to the event shown in the climax of the movie, i.e. if you swap Khalistani with Bangladeshi .

Watched Jawan last night.
MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOLERS , BUT NOT REALLY !!!!!

Except for the scenes when Papa SRK is around this movie is only for SRK fans. Not one single memorable song or dialogue.
The just before pre interval scene is really good and gave me vibes of Kamal Hasan’s Indian.
SRK looks old and tired in the pre interval portions, the bald look makes him look cartoonish. I was getting irritated by his mannerisms.

The action scenes are good except for in the climax. and look similar to Jailer, a movie I just watched on Prime. Both are Jailers …lol

The father son theme is now in Gadar-2, Jailer , Vikram and Jawan. Just as how the Gadar -2 climax action scenes were hilarious, Jawan too they are way OTT. Bullets flying around and Father -Son ka milan ho raha hai !! Also, why are so many action scenes shot in the dark??
I had no issues with the plot but most of it seems to have been picked from the daily headlines with no effort to go into detail the reasons for it. (Case in point- allegedly China sponsored protest- ensured closure of the Copper mining in TN ). This movie will do wonder at the China BO. Also I don’t think a Sarkari Bank Babu would/ can behave the way the babu is shown to be behaving with a farmer. Kuch Zyada kar diya .
The women army is just for show, rescue hamesha SRK and men hee kartey hain. The music is loud and unnecessary with Masssy Massy Maasy being played in the background. Haan bhai, maasi hai, classy nahee hai. The set of the jail is so so fake .
Vijay Sethupati is very effective, but I think Arjun Rampal or Neel Nitin Mukesh would have suited the role better. Nayantara did not impress – her role also is so confusing – (uff tumahery usool – tumharey Adarsh). Deepika in a brief role shines. Priyamani and SRK’s daughter reminded me of The family Man web series.

Overall, I was not able to finish Pathaan beyond an hour, but Jawan IMO is much better .
P.S.- Akhshay Kumar ka naaam bhee chura liya !!! LOL
Rathore- VIKRAM RATHORE !!!!
P.S.- Sunil Grover has been criminally wasted in the movie.

Watched The Vaccine War.
It is an extremely well researched movie based on book titled Going Viral by Padma Shri Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director General of ICMR.
Nana Patekar plays the role of Dr. Bhargava, and he excels. His climax speech gives goosebumps.
Pallavi Joshi plays the role of Dr. Priya Abraham, director of the National Institute of Virology, and she nails it too. There are several more women scientists who are equally shown to be responsible in developing the Bharat vaccine. it highlights the power of women scientists in a very powerful yet subtle way.
The movie itself is full of real instances taken from news cycle from 2020 to 2022.

The antagonist is Rohini Singh Dhulia (played brilliantly by Raima Sen) who represents all the “toolkit” media combined into one.
The dialogs are crisp, the direction solid and does not let the movie be too preachy or boring.
The only issue is there are too many technical jargons and a large portion of the movie has spoken English which could be a problem in interiors. I also wish they would have shown the seamless distribution/ administration of vaccine also.
Anupam Kher, the lucky mascot of Vivek has a small cameo in it too. I believe this movie should have tax free status all over India . It will motivate lot more people to choose this field.
The movie does not hold back punches in naming and shaming companies and people responsible to put road blocks in development of indigenous vaccine. I think it will be a big hit in the cities and small to medium towns.
Matlab Must watch hai !!!

Back from Gadar 2.
Sunny Deol is terrific , Ameesha has a very small role, Utkarsh annoys, the guy cannot act. The villain just shouts and shouts and shouts., one misses Amrish Puri a lot.

Screenplay is a bit sloppy. Some parts are brilliant and some middle parts are extremely boring and slow down the movie, make you impatient. The action scenes are a joke but whenever Sunny is there you really don’t care. They can easily edit out two songs of Utkarsh which are within 30 minutes of each other.

The Pak army is shown as buffoons’ . They have touched upon the Bangladesh and Baluchistan issue a bit. Sunny’s dialogs are superlative.

The theatre was 80% full and there were Taalis at a few places. The handpump scene is brilliantly mounted and shot. Maza aa gaya .

Overall , Gadar-1 kee 50 percent hai, that too because of mainly the superb use of songs of Gadar 1, brilliant use of footage from Gadar 1, and Sunny Deol. He excels as Tara Singh.
Ek Baar theatre mein dekhna toh banta hai!

P.S. – Both my daughters disagree with that, they were like we could have easily watched this one on OTT.

Watched Rocky aur Rani.
Enjoyed it overall.
The biggest winner are the subtitles. very apt and witty. When Ranveer says kkrazy- they appear as Krazy , and Alia’s of course as crazy. All other punjabish english by Ranveer has been subtitled brilliantly . ( except pencho has been subtitled as MF)
The second biggest winner is the beautiful use of old songs , maza aa gaya .

The two families are so so cartoonish. The Chaterjee house looks so fake and looks like a set. You can clearly see that the screenplay is by a bunch of SOBO kids with the sensibilities of KJO. Bengalis as classy ( my foot) and Punjabis as gaudy ( overdone)
The dialogs are top class however, Ranveer Singh excels in emotional scenes. Dharmendra is wasted , the few scenes he has , ussko mindless ajooba dikha diya, ek toh emotional scene dey detey ussko., Jaya ko gayab hee kar diya post climax sey ( actually good for us).

The movie itself is a bit boring in the beginning but once Ranveer gets serious it gets interesting . Alia Bhatt ka Khoobsoorat( Rekha) act in Ranveer’s house looks forced and not classy at all.
10% of the dialogs are in English which will not go well with B and C centers.
Saala Bra na ho gaya , wokeness ka medal ho gaya.
P.S – For all its wokeness, the last song in the movie about being of solah saal is so regressive . LOL !!

Oppenheimer
Watched it. I did not get bored even for a minute throughout the movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly . The IMAX seats are pretty inconvenient for a 3 hour long movie but the explosion scene and the BGM made up for it. The theatre was sold out except for the front row. The audience clapped at the end of the movie.
I really liked the countdown like music coming from behind up to the explosion and then complete silence on the explosion , only visuals , and then the deafening sound. Maza aa gaya.

***********************************************
Watched MI- Dead reckoning . Maza aa gaya. One thing I noticed that in the initial scenes India is given so much importance and is constantly mentioned at par with other super powers.
Yeh Naye Bharat kee haqeeqat hai.
# Modi Hai toh Mumkin Hai.

Satyaprem ki Katha
——–SPOILERS ————-
I liked the movie lot, too many songs though . Both my daughters and my wife teared up as well. It is an issue based film in a massy taam jhaam.
My two grouses were -1. – He should have not insulted his father the way and in the language he did in front of everyone., you don’t do that to a dad who has been your friend and your biggest supporter.

2.- The relationship between Kiara and her dad also needed some depth as well as some closure after the big reveal. I guess they stretched the movie so much that towards the end they kind of rushed everything .
P.S.- My elder daughter commented that He should have first taken Kiara’s permission in private and not surprise her the way he did in public.

*****************************************************
Adipurush
Overall letdown by the huge expectations from Om Raut and Manoj Muntashir Shukla.
In order to make it kids friendly they have created a joke of a movie. The songs, the BGM and some sequences ( like Shabri, Jatayu and the Lakhshman Rekha Kavach with Swastikas were nice touches.
Jai Shree Ram !!
******************************************************
Finished watching City of dreams season 3. Good watch. Season 2 was the best IMO.

MILD SPOILER !!
Every season one Gaekwad family member tapak jaata hai !!

**********************************************************
Watched TKS. The theatre was full. It is a brilliant, well made, well acted. well researched and superb production values movie.
The BGM, the songs etc. are so well done that it does not give a feel of a sub standard or shabby movie.
It should be watched by everyone of all faiths , specially the kids with impressionable minds.
It is far from propaganda movie .
Baaki marzee aapkee hai ….

What was interesting was in the end credits it showed Vipul Shah as – “Producer and Creative director” and Sudipto’s was- A film by Sudipto Sen.

There is a superb scene in the movie where the daughter of a commie tells her father that part of the fault lies with you too, you taught us imported ideology but never taught us our own culture and sanskriti.
Hope it is a wake up call for the Johnys.

**********************************************************
Finished watching all 10 episodes of Jubilee . Overall it is a god watch. Thoda Buniyaad ka yaad dilaya . I am so glad that Vikram has moved away from the saaya of Khapshyap’s habit of mixing his politics in his movies.
This one is a pure bollywood drama .

  2. Couple of more points-
    1. IMO Ranveer’s energy was like Hritik in MPKDH , whereas his Energy should have been more like Prem in MPK.
    2. Both times the staging was so obvious and I could tell a mile off – the abhee na jao chod kar song sung by Dharmendra and by Ranveer. Matlab Itna obvio !!!
3.The entire Bra sequence IMO was KJO fulfilling his Fantasies of seeing Ranveer in a Bra.
4.The BGM and Chorus of the Durga Festival song was so so good. Maza aa gaya.
    5. Why show Dharmendra Paa jee like a zombie . I think his climax scene was cut on the editing table.
and lastly thoda controversial question –
Why is Hijab always a choice and Aanchal an imposition for these SOBO kids?

So here are the lyrics of the song , will the bhadraloks approve of Solah Baras being Bali Umar in today’s woke times, batao bhala?
    Kudmai meaning- Celebration of an engagement, • शादी के पूर्व रिश्ता पक्का करने के लिए की जाने वाली रस्म, सगाई, शादी तै करना, रिश्ता करना

    The Song:
Solah Baras Ke Do Kadam, Chaukhat Ke Bahar Kya Gaye
Teri Kudmayi Ke Din Aa Gaye

Haaye Banno Pardesiya Ke Desh Ke, Chaubare Tujhko Bhaa Gaye
Teri Kudmayi Ke Din Aa Gaye

Haan Genda Gulaabo Se Saji, Doli Teri Taiyaar Hai
Teri Kudmayi Ke Din Aa Gaye

  7. The great bong reviews Oppenheimer .

I am not what you would call a Nolan fanboy. I might have been once. But over the years, I have grown increasingly tired of Christopher Nolan as a director. That is because he, in my opinion, has taken his audience for granted. He has eschewed the telling of a story in favor of directorial pyrotechnics. As a superstar himself, he seems compelled to somehow put himself in front of his own movie, like a person in the theater standing up right in front of you when you least want him to.
Dunkirk was a visual spectacle, made for Imax, but it did not last in my mind. I absolutely loved it when I saw it, but quickly forgot.
Tenet was an absolute trainwreck, not merely a bad movie, but inscrutable, and deliberately so, as if Nolan is saying to his audience, “I give a flying fuck if you understand this movie or not. By the way, if you do not, you are a stupid person anyways, and not worthy of my genius.” And because he is a brand, no one in the studios has the cojones to temper his arrogance. So Nolan’s greatness survives purely on the Emperor’s New Clothes syndrome: “Everyone else says his movies are great, so I must say so too, else I will be labeled stupid.”
Oppenheimer is a fascinating, multi-layered study of conflict. There are many conflicts going on–between the “small minds” and the “big minds”, between husband and wife, between Communism and Capitalism, the Allied and the Axis, and laying bare each strand of the conflict is beyond this post.
But let’s look at the most important conflict of all, a conflict that rages inside Oppenheimer’s mind.
It stems from guilt. Anyone familiar with the Oppenheimer story knows this. On seeing the test detonation of an atomic device, Oppenheimer has a change of heart. The terrifying realization of what he has done dawns on him, and he utters those lines from the Bhagavad Gita: “I am Death, destroyer of worlds”. Seized upon by remorse, he becomes a public spokesman for nuclear arms control. At the height of the cold war, his continued opposition to the nuclear program leads to whispers that he was an agent of the Communists, with whom he had association years ago, ultimately resulting in him, a once-national-hero, losing favor with the ruling dispensation. President Truman even calls him a “crybaby”, an incident that finds its way into the movie, except that the President did not say this within earshot of Oppenheimer. Though Oppenheimer’s legacy was subsequently exhumed, post-McCarthy years, he never quite recovers from the very public attacks on him and died, with a cloud over his head.

For Oppenheimer is both, depending on where you stand, a destroyer of worlds or the winner of the war, assembling other Avengers of super-scientists to create a united front against evil, or Thanos himself with his dark army, drunk with the hubris of having the power to exterminate humanity in a blinding flash of light with a flick of his mind.
    An amazing work of art.

  9. This is really pertinent –
One cannot but find parallels with Geoffrey Hinton, the father of AI, quitting Google and then criticizing his past employer for research he did for them. Did he suddenly realize the impact of his work? Did he suddenly develop a conscience? Or did he, at the end of his career, on seeing some of the large language models in use today from other corporations, that have definitely drawn on his work, have a hydrogen bomb moment?

VA basically dedicated the movie to the women of India. as shown in the movie too, most scientist in the ICMR and the NIV are women who work round the clock. They have work as well as household duties to fullfill.

  15. Nice reviews.

Also, just watched Rocky Aur Rani, overall a fun, massy entertainer that’s been put together with some craft.

Ranveer is easily the best thing about the film, Karan has basically created a character around his real life persona and crazy off-screen dressing style and antics, and done it tremendously well.

Btw I completely agree that the families were too cartoonish but on the flip side, subtlety would have killed the box office. In other words, the odds are stacked against anyone trying to make a film in this genre. Because in 2023, one certainly expects more deft handling and nuance, and critics (the unpaid ones)/audience are also not as forgiving as they are with imbecilic actioners like Pathan or Gadar 2. Don’t even get me started on the south masala crap like KGF making upwards of 400 crores.

Karan will probably have to find cheaper ways to make such films (especially if he wants to flex his creative muscles) or switch to other genres.

Best dialogue in the film – made me chuckle.

Yeh Rabindranath ko dada bolta hai
Toh Mamta ko toh didi bolega

    • I will also say that a film like Rocky aur Rani is just as unrealistic as a Pathan or Gadar 2…a Rocky Randhawa in real life will be a completely spoilt Dilli f***boy, not some dude with a heart of gold simping after one chick.

I also did not mind Dharmendra this time around. The miscasting of Jaya and Shabana however still stands, as does the entire Bra sequence and Alia’s Khoobsoorat act at the Randhawa house. I so wish they had Dharmendra say a line to Tijori that save Rock and Rani’s relationship before tapkaoing him.
P.S.- The Title ( illuminated with lights) on the car , when Ranveer comes to pick Alia in the climax is spelled- Rocky aur Rani ki prem Kahani .
The actual title of the movie is Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Notice the extra “i” in Ki and an extra “a” in Kahani.
KJO did mention this in his interview with Mayank recently that he believes in numerology . The title must have been changed subsequent to the movie being shot.

  20. OMG-2 is a good time pass watch. Akhshay Kumar is very good in the movie and IMO he is better and more confident here than in OMG-1.
Pankaj Tripathi is good too but is very predictable now. However, The kids, the wife , the lawyer , Brajesh Kala ( as doctor) , Pawan Malhotra as judge are all just top class. And above all is Yummy Gautam Dhar , she is too good and a treat to watch.
The story, script, songs and the locations are very good, but do have a few unnecessary- typical ( considered mandatory ) scenes like neighbors making fun of the boy in front of the mom etc.

I was very happy that they have taken a lot of care in maintaining the sanctity of Maha Dev and Nandi. The court room scenes between Pankaj, Pawan and Yami Gutam are very entertaining with liberal usage of Hindi. I loved the fact that they mentioned the Sanatan knowledge and culture and how the British goal was to dismantle it .
Good watch, but I would have felt a bit uncomfortable watching it with my daughters.
