the best thing about the Malayalam film industry is the range in genres, not following a standard formula or template for ensuring success, staying away from gimmicks, and going back to the drawing board and getting the basics right: well-written characters and neat storytelling.

a modern day romcom, a period folklore horror, a survival thriller, a crowd-pleasing mass masala, a tense film about slavery, and a period film about the South Indian film industry have all done rather well at the box office. Some of these had big stars of the industry like Fafa, Mamoothy, and Prithviraj. None of these were remakes or sequels. The industry invests in writers, in author-backed storytelling. And all at a budget.

With all of them failing left and right except for one or two, hopefully it will bring some good scripts for 2025.

I think by 2026, there may be just 2 to 3 such films.

Go back to comedy, drama, action, rom-com instead of saving india from pak.

    Laapataa Ladies:

A good film and finally one from the hindi film industry that conjures up an utterly convincing story from the very heartland. The actors, mostly newbies or unrecognisable faces, do a very good job, and their relatability as just another face in the crowd is what makes helps their characters come alive.

It had a lot of scope of turning itself into a comedy of errors. But besides the basic premise of the two ‘exchanged’ brides, the film steers in a different direction, with the characters’ motives in the often patriarchal milieu becoming clearer as the film progresses. The situations and the characters, from the single motherly figure selling snacks at the railway station to the entitled, obnoxious groom, are a product of their environment.

The film operates in the zone of a social satire, but stays far from preaching or hammering its point across. Its funny and bittersweet, and ends on a surprising high and happy ending. It’s new age storytelling with something old school about it—the sincerity and the intentions, with the women having each other’s back forming the most poignant moments on screen. With the subject at hand, it could have gone anywhere, but Kiran Rao chose to opt for the simple route, telling a story the old-fashioned and non-gimmicky way: the backdrop, the ‘situation’, the conundrum and conflict, and ultimate resolution. To no complaints.

    Definitely worth a watch!

With the big Eid releases having flopped, and not many promising films slated for release this year, what do you foresee for the trade?

    – By “not many promising films”, you mean to say that not many films hold promise of doing big business, right? If yes, you are right! But small films may turn out to be the successful ones this year. Of course, they cannot bring the big numbers one associates with big-ticket entertainers but they can, nevertheless, help the trade stay afloat. Secondly, Hollywood and the South Indian industries just might save the day for the exhibition sector. So, in reality, exhibitors and the trade should be keeping their fingers crossed for small films, Hollywood films and South Indian cinema this year.

The producers and makers of both the Eid releases this year were supremely confident about their respective film’s stupendous success. Then what went wrong?

    – People connected with any film being “supremely confident” about it doesn’t mean much because every producer and every filmmaker gets so emotionally attached to his film that it is difficult to imagine them to be objective at the time of the film’s release. Besides, if they don’t exhibit confidence in their product, who will? Thirdly, the reaction of trade people in preview shows before a film’s release is, more often than not, misguiding because most of the industry people never give their honest opinion if they don’t like a film. This further fortifies the producer and director’s belief that they have made a blockbuster. Frankly, nobody wants to hear negative comments about his film, more so at the time of release. The same was true in the cases of both the Eid releases — BADE MIYAN CHOTE MIYAN and MAIDAAN.

Is it true that Sunny Deol is not completing the films he had started before the release of Gadar 2? Why?

    – It’s true. He is seeking a revision in his remuneration. In some cases, he is demanding a five- to tenfold hike in his fees! In a couple of cases, he is asking the producers to change the script. Both the demands are untenable and so, those f

    • It doesn’t seem like Aamir will even try to out-blockbuster Shahrukh, Salman, Hrithik, Ranbir etc. now. He is doing his own thing with niche films, which is refreshing to see in this day and age for a big star. I think people will get tired of these umpteen action films and his brand of cinema will make a comeback.

And he hasn’t aged too badly, even though he seems very comfortable with getting old as seen in his daughter’s wedding. Meanwhile SRK is looking like Salt Bae (he should totally go for that father Jawan look in real life, and keep a proper beard) and Salman has just gotten too chubby. The best aged stars are definitely Sunil Shetty and Anil.

Failure humbles people, hence Aamir is making this statement right now.

If i’m SRK, i would stay away from aamir and salman.

        • SRK would eat Aamir alive: Compare Lagaan, DCH, RDB, TZP, Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dangal and PK with JTHJ, Fan, Zero, JHMS, Ra1, HNY, Dilwale, with only CDI and Swades (at a stretch) being a notable good film or performance in there and you have the actor with the former films who is called insecure. People have short memories. If Aamir is going through a rough spell right now, with 2 consecutive under-performers, then I wonder what others like SRK were going through during the last decade.

Let’s not forget when we speak of records, Dangal remains the one to be beaten, and I wonder when a Hindi film will beat that. Even a Secret Superstar ( as much as I don’t rate it) kicks the ass of most Hindi BBs WW.

The fact is that both actors are there to stay. As for being insecure, Aamir is doing a cameo in a Rajkumar Santoshi-Sunny Deol film where the latter will hog all the lime lights. And SZP is hardly going to focus merely upon him. I just think Aamir’s ego and want to get records prevailed at the expense of his good script sense at the time of Thugs. We can talk about misfires in Thugs and LSC endlessly, but how many more are there in the last 25 years or so from him? None. Not too many actors have such a tremendous record.

agree with Rahul here. I have seen many, mostly SRK fans, argue over how he is ‘easily a better actor than Aamir’ and is more spontaneous, and I can talk and argue endlessly over why that is a hogwash claim. Aamir has been unfairly judged over his script sense in his past two films, but people keep forgetting his golden run that would put SRK to shame over and over again. He simply zoomed past SRK with Lagaan, and continued to do with his later films.

Im not even getting into proving Aamir’s mettle as an actor with Lagaan or TZP or Rangeela or Sarfarosh/JJWS/Ghulam. Even his subtle Talaash act beats a majority of SRK’s performances.

i have to admit though that SRK’s Fan was truly as astonishing performance. He was miserable and spontaneous and pathetic as Gaurav, but killed it as the Superstar Aryan Khanna. His most consistent and real performance other than Dil Se. Not a huge fan of his overrated Swades or CDI acts.

    Baby Reindeer:

Twisted and dark but also imaginative and well-written. What I love about modern day screenwriters is how they add quirks and backstories of principal characters and explain their motives through the ‘why are they the way they are?’ approach. Result: layered stories told from very simple plots.

Here the hairbrained plot on surface revolves around a seemingly depressed and down-on-his-luck comic who draws the attention and fantasy of a neurotic, extremely volatile, and unpredictable woman in a bar. Soon she becomes obsessed with him and spends every living moment of her day sending him text messages. They range from lovey-dovey to downright abusive, revealing an insecure and possibly dangerous personality on the loose.

Baby Reindeer is stylised and grim but also hilarious and unpredictability funny, and good it is the way it is or this could have turned into a rather disturbing saga. Some scenes are quite stomach churning and might instigate extreme emotions, but are necessary for the context. Being on the receiving end of mental and physical abuse and struggle with repressed sexuality is reality of many people, and glad that there is something that comes along that doesn’t shy away from addressing these issues.

This could have easily ended up being a slasher psychopathic tale along the lines of a Scream or Single White Female, but I did wish, however, that this had another episode or two dedicated to Martha Scott’s point of view too: what went in her mind and what instigates her choices. The focus is all on the abused and the victim: fair enough. But considering the series spent all the time on his personality and career and family dynamics and urges, maybe the woman character deserved some time of her own. Everything is told from his perspective (maybe that’s how they wanted it to be). Several aspects of her personality (like having a law degree but being jobless) are hinted at but never explored, and she ends up being a foul/loud-mouthed creep who does self-destructive things. The final few minutes are poignant and does somewhat explain her fascination with the baby reindeer, but it comes a little too late in the day.

    A few lines on Shaitaan:

I liked it, even though several story developments are questionable. It is later revealed (spoiler) that the antagonist was responsible for the vanishing of over a hundred girls lured against their will. If that was the case, how was he never actively hunted for by the police? How would a criminal who must have been identified by at least a few parents, roam at large and continue to be on the lookout for his next victim?

Secondly, if his verbal commands was all it took to keep his victims under submission and follow his orders, the family could have found at least ten different reasons to keep their daughter away from him. They react helplessly and without any resourcefulness for a major part of the film, allowing the unwelcome visitor to do whatsoever and howsoever he pleases. It is because of this obvious shortcoming that the novelty factor wears off after the first 20 minutes. After that it becomes a medley of tactics and grim tasks that he continues making the girl do. It becomes repetitive and stretched, making me wonder if it could have worked better as a 30-minute Fear Files or Aahat episode.

However, it’s never boring and has quite a few moments of high tension and suspense that keep the interest alive. Besides, the concept of horror in Hindu cinema is often reduced to vengeful ghosts and witches, so a horror/thriller with a regular, seemingly innocuous and smooth-talking face of pure evil in a contemporary world is a welcome relief and change. The performances are also decent. Madhavan especially seems to be having fun. It’s not really an extraordinary performance and he comes across as strangely likeable instead of a villain that evokes feelings of disgust. The last 20 minutes of the film are genuinely good, and the epilogue has a good twist that ends the film on a high and helps the viewer carry a decent impression despite the film’s misgivings. Amit Trivedi’s titular song and BG score also lend the film its eerie feel.

    A good one-time watch.

  27. After Premalu, Manjummel Boys is another Malayalam Movie where superb writing towers over a simple story. This one is a survival thriller as much as it is a movie about friends and friendship. Based on a real life incident which happened in Guna caves in 2006, the movie uses the backdrop of Guna caves and the surrounding Kodaikanal and creates some beautiful imagery with some superb cinematography.

The casting is fantastic, Soubin shines in a role which uses his understated style of acting very well. We know how the movie will end but it is to directors and writers credit that we still cheer for the characters in the end. I couldnt help thinking about Mission Raniganj during this movie , a movie which has the same kind of story and how run of the mill and unimaginative it appears in front of MB. I hadnt minded Raniganj then to be honest but seeing MB you see what a lame attempt it was.

Lastly a word on the music. The movie smartly uses the song from Guna (the reason the caves were called Guna caves) – Kanmani Anbodhu Kadhalan. The lyrics of the original song was meant to convey the spiritual and holy nature of love and the diretcor imaginatively uses it to convey the spirutual nature of love in friendship.

    A must watch, Highly recommended

    Manjummel Boys:

terrific survival thriller with stunning cinematography and great background music: creepy and tense. Have always found survival thrillers to be a tricky genre which can easily fall into the trap of predictability and repetitiveness. The director uses this opportunity to also comment on the system: the police who are supposed to protect and help people out if difficult situations turn to be (sort of) an antagonist here. The men here are irresponsible, of course, but the end scene shows why we often wait for disaster to strike before implementing strict laws.

The film is a terrific ode to friendship; it’s ultimately the close ones who bring us out of misery.

As Krish mentioned, it’s highly recommended.

Sid Anand’s attempts to rouse emotions through a very stereotypical portrayal of the hero and heroine’s backgrounds and personal issues fall very flat. It is a boring and half baked love story.

That part reminds of an earlier film by Sid Anand called Ta Ra Rum Pum where the emotional parts fell flat, while the ‘thrilling’ parts were underwhelming.

2 death scenes stand out in the film. HR symbolises the drawbacks. Capable of much better but hardly leaves a mark.
The main positive of the film is that overall it is much better than what Hindi films like Yodha etc usually deliver. but these are quite low standards. It is better than Pathaan but War remains Sid’s best film for me. It at least delivered what it promised.

Even trying not to engage into comparisons with Hollywood films of the genre, I was quite underwhelmed overall.

Border 2 is envisioned as the biggest war film of Indian Cinema and the sequel, directed by Anurag Singh, stars Sunny Deol and Ayushmann Khurrana in lead.

In August 2023, Pinkvilla was the first to report that Bhushan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta have joined hands on the sequel to the 1997 cult blockbuster, Border. Soon after, we reported that Sunny Deol will get back to the sequel to play his part of Major Kuldip Singh Chanduri, as the makers have locked an exciting tale to take the franchise forward. We also informed our readers that Ayushmann Khurrana will be the new entrant to the franchise and the actor will be playing a strong author-backed part in the Indian Armed Forces, followed by an update that Border 2 will be helmed by acclaimed filmmaker, Anurag Singh.

And now, Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that producers Bhushan KumarJP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta are targeting a Republic Day 2026 release for Border 2 to be directed by Anurag Singh. “Border 2 is targeting to hit the big screen on Friday, January 23, 2026 – leading to the Republic Day holiday on Monday, January 26, 2026. Being a film celebrating the bravery of Indian Armed Forces, the makers feel that there is no better date than Republic Day for the arrival of this Sunny Deol and Ayushmann Khurrana film,” revealed a source close to the development.

The source further informed that Border 2 is envisioned as the biggest war film of Indian Cinema and the makers will be going all out to make a film that does justice to the legacy of the original film. “Border 2 has been in the writing stage for over a year now and the team has cracked a script that stands to the expectations that people would have from a sequel to a mammoth all-time blockbuster like Border. Sunny Deol and Ayushmann Khurrana are very excited to embark on this journey by the end of this year,” the source added

We hear that T Series and JP Dutta Films will be going all out to get together the best possible technical crew for Border 2. “A film of this canvas requires massive pre-production and the idea is to get some of the top talents from across the globe on board Border 2. All the stakeholders are well verse in the fact that Border is not just a film but an emotion and will be going all out to deliver an honest film to the audiences. It’s going to be the Biggest War Film of India,” the source concluded.

Even without an official announcement, Border 2 is already among the most awaited films of Indian Cinema, and is expected to set the box office on fire upon its release on January 23, 2026. Interestingly, the year 2026 also marks 29 years of Border, which was released on June 13, 1997. Over the years, the film has earned a cult status among the cinema-going audience, with not just the characters but also the music standing the test of time
