B.O. update: ‘Patiala House’ starts poor, sends shock waves
– By Taran Adarsh, February 11, 2011 – 15:49 IST
The opening figures [morning + noon shows] of PATIALA HOUSE across the country were shockingly low, in 10% to 15% to 20% range. This, despite PATIALA HOUSE being a solo release, with no major film to contend with. Even the holdover titles had more or less exhausted their run [with the sole exception of YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, which fared well at urban centres].
Akshay Kumar’s last release TEES MAAR KHAN had opened to a fantabulous response, also because it was Farah Khan’s next release after OM SHANTI OM, boasted of the hugely popular ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ track and of course, the Christmas period contributed enormously. PATIALA HOUSE was expected to start slow and this was evident when the advance booking counters opened and the film barely managed to sell few tickets in advance at prime properties.
However, the film should pick up in evening/night shows on Friday and also perform well on Saturday and Sunday, if it has to stay afloat.
Patiala House opened well below the mark with average morning collections at multiplexes around 30-35%. This was expected as emotional family dramas don’t tend to take big openings, single screen response outside North is likely to be lower than multiplexes.
Saturday and Sunday will be very important for the film and a big pick up could mean a good run at the theatres as family drama’s which work normally have longer runs at theatres. North India was best due to Akshay Kumar following in North and Punjabi factor in the film. The openings at some major multiplexes is as follows.
Patiala House Has Disastrous Opening At Single Screens
Friday 11th February 2010 17.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
Patiala House has taken a disastrous opening at single screens across the country. The collections at single screens ranged on average at 5-15% which is awful for a film like Patiala House. Even the 4-5 good single screens in Delhi were just 25-30%.
The collections in single screens of places like Maharashtra, CP Berar and Rajasthan were disastrous with some shows collecting just 700-800 rupees.
The multiplex response is much better than single screens but still poor. There is not been much of a pick-up in the early evening shows. If the 10.00am show was 20% then the 4.00pm show was 30% and where the 10.00am show was 30% then 4.00am was 40%.
Sports movies dont do that well, the exception being Lagaan and Chak De. Need a charismatic hero to carry the film. Akshay’s love for cinema is just limited to scoring at boxoffice.
Sick of punjabi based themes which obviously mean loudness and big drama.
How can one accept the ever romantic Rishi as the obstinate father in a turban?
Wish Akshay played the strict father’s role and Rishi played the fat cricketer for a change.
this whole punjabi is so overdone that i sometime wonder if punjabi people themselves must have been feeling irritated to see this “hamming” and “diabetically sweet” avatars of them – whereas they are just normal people like from any other state……..these days, if i hear that the film has punjab/punjabi familiy as the backdrop – i simply refrain from watching that 🙂
To me it is less irritating than watching these urbanized (euphemism for westernized) youth in their wannabe avatars in every other film.
I’ll watch the punjabi loudness any day when given a choice.
– Zor Ka Jhatka fails to impress: Shah Rukh Khan returned to television this month with the show Zor Ka Jhatka on Imagine TV. Though Imagine TV spent a lot of money promoting the new show with Shah Rukh Khan as its main draw, opening week ratings averaged at 2.6 – that’s lower than Rakhi Ka Swayamwar, which opened with of 4.1 and a lot lower than Shah Rukh Khan’s previous shows Kaun Banega Crorepati and Kya Aap Paanchi Paas Se Tez Hain. Animesh Das reports that though the numbers are low Imagine claims it has tapped into a new audience.
Surprised that patiala house opened so bad…
Did not expect it to be a blockbuster anyways, but not this bad.
anushka is coiming after bbb but guess the 3maar khan effect was too much to counter.
Anyhow, feel that any top hero should have atleast six months gap between releases—the no of releases akshay comes uo with, is difficult for any hero to sustain……
Liked the title song of patiala house—a beat totallly atypical of shankar ehsaan loy and suits the vocals of (an otherwise worthless) jassi…
although the ‘9/11 was life-changing for me’ is again classic colonized self-imagining for Sidhwani! Why was it life-changing? Because he was stuck in Fl for 4 days?!
Patiala House was better on Saturday than Friday but the pick up was not very big. The approx business on Saturday is in the 5.10-5.30 crore nett region as compared to Friday which was around 4.15 crore nett. The jump is around 25% on an all India basis.
The jump came in circuits dominated by multiplexes as single screens had a very marginal jump. The film still has chances as family films take time to settle at the box office. Sunday will be important as the afternoon and early evening shows are dominated by families but more importantly it will be Monday-Thursday business which will tell where the film is going. The two day business of the film is in the 9.25-9.50 crore nett region.
Patiala House Starts Very Slow, Panic In Trade
2 days ago by Komal Nahta
The film trade is in shock. Today’s Patiala House has taken such a lukewarm opening that even the hardcore pessimists have been left speechless. The initial response to the Akshay Kumar starrer has been so poor that the trade people can’t believe their eyes as box-office figures are flowing in.
On an average, the first show’s collections have not been more than 20%. Point to be noted is that a lot of multiplexes keep their ticket rates lower in the morning shows to attract the student community. Even the low admission rates have not pulled the youth to the cinemas. Whether it was Delhi or U.P., Gujarat or Rajasthan, C.I. or C.P. Berar, Punjab or Bengal circuit, the story in the shows till 2 p.m. was the same: the film had not taken a decent start. Many cinemas reported just 10-15% opening show collections.
As compared to this initial, the start of Akshay Kumar’s last film, Tees Maar Khan, was historic. Said a trade person, “‘Tees Maar Khan’ was a very well-hyped film as compared to ‘Patiala House’. Plus, it had a Sheela ki jawani which this film doesn’t have.”
In recent times, this is the worst opening of an Akshay starrer. The initial of not just ‘Tees Maar Khan’ but also that of Khatta Meetha, Action Replayy and De Dana Dan was far better than that of Patiala House. The film’s leading lady, Anushka Sharma, was considered to be a lucky girl as all her three films before this – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Badmaash Company and Band Baaja Baaraat – have done well at the box-office. In fact, when a television channel had asked Akshay soon after ‘Tees Maar Khan’ had not gone down too well with the audience, if Anushka’s luck would rub off on him in ‘Patiala House’, the star had pompously replied, “Maybe, my good luck rubs off on her.” Seems, his bad luck has indeed rubbed off on the lucky girl! It must be mentioned here that Anushka’s ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ had also started very slow but it picked up later.
Patiala House Fails To Pick Up At Box-Office
1 day ago by Komal Nahta
The dull opening of this week’s Patiala House on Friday has sent shock waves in the industry. Collections did not pick up much in the latter shows too.
I think the idea of “shock waves” is really dispicable and unfair. Akshay Kumar had a rough 2010 and Nikhil Advani has two big flops in a row so a big opening was hardly on the cards.
But still the opening is still poor. No one can hide behind that fact. It’s not the so terrible to send out shockwaves. Akshay is definitely losing his steam at the box office – but it seems the movie is probably better than his usual stuff. Just gone past the stage of feeling sorry for Akshay, his poor choices have caught up with him.
rahat fateh khan is a v good singer and have enjoyed his recent songs a lot..
Thats naive of him to do that (if he has done it)
has he been detained or arrested.
Interesting to see the comments from readers esp 1st and 3rd below this writeup!
About patiala house—have not seen it since it is surprisinlgy not showing in the local uk multiplex—surprising bcos of the UKcentric theme..
Read a few sporadic reviews and they were more positive than akshays usual ones.
akshay , of all people, seems to have “underplayed” his part well..
And now, if nikhil advani gets the ham-king srk to underplay in his next one, advani should be given an oscar!
i would never call lagaan a sports movie as the backdrop was entirely difficult and the cricket part mostly came as a shock to viewers which was hardly there in promotion but even though its still the best sports movie which has emerged from india
akshay tried to milk the sucess of monty panesar(loose adaptation) and his rise in u.k but just like what aditya chopra did it with the life of mir ranjan negi in cdi and in both cases movie where highly dramitized
the presence of nasir hussain( the second generation immigrant from chennai) and his help to akki is symbolic though
even the famous 70 min dialague in cdi was the direct rip off from miracle( a cult movie on ice hockey)
hopefully indian director and producers should realise we have enough legendary content on sports life which if produced originalaty can become cult
one wonders when we would see the life history of flying sikh(milkha singh) or p.t usha in celluliod that has the potential to be real classic
>any way anti india activities in indian land will not be tolerated by indians
What’s anti India about it? Stop spreading such poison.
He was just unfortunate to have got caught. Do you think the others don’t have lakhs of undisclosed dollars?
lol u mean to say smuggling money out from india from other destination without informing to customs is an ethical act
dude it comes under anti india activity and it has been done from indian land( provided he is caught)
and ya its not me but the toi who is spreading the so called poison ( the same rehat who is the pillars of aman ki asha and got the toi’s franchise filmfare awards
“Stop spreading such poison. He was just unfortunate to have got caught.Do you think the others don’t have lakhs of undisclosed dollars?”
While i will give raahat fateh ali(who atleast looks like a true gentleman!) the benefit of doubt, im surprised at how oldgold has the default “liberal” reaction of trivialising indian law.
Im not aware of the exact details but am sure oldgold does not know b4 jumping into “defence”. It is this arundhati roy–nandita das stance which needs ot be curbed.
Try breaking the law in the states, middle east and u will see what is so “unfortunate” about it!
iffronfire—thans for the other informative link about pirated cds funding nefarious deals. If true, then the likes of oldgold should come out against these as well!
Iffronfire—was keen to see oldgolds reaction to the above..
But it seems she had to rush to help out rahat fateh ali, who we hear now has been released…lol
have not seen PH yet..was planning to but some of my Friends suggested not to watch it…I was getting mixed reaction for it on the internet….Still confused….
BTW Akki is in real trouble here…He has become Govinda of this era..Anything apart form Comedy..it’s failing at the BO….One thing he can make sure is good script for his comedy movies at least..TMK was biggest misfire of his career…The movie had everything except good script…It could have taken him to no 1 spot…
He should concentrate only in comedy or action comedy now…well for good script he can follow Salman down south…
i think it is late for akki as for next 2 years, his films will keep releasing at this rate…..and by the time he becomes choosy – people wud have made up their minds NOT to go for any akki movie….he is going rajesh khanna / govinda way – point of no return!
Well Rajesh Khanna atleast had Avatar, Kudrat, Rajput or a Swarg…Akshay’s last decent movies were Bhool Bhulaiya nd Namaste London way back in 2006….
Among Akshay’s future projects I am curious about Joker and OUATIM 2…
Joker: How Kunder is allowed to write scripts (and direct) again n again…
OUATIM 2: Akshay doing role of a DON…
Patiala House grossed around 15.75 crore nett approx over its first weekend. The territorial breakdown is as follows. East Punjab was best followed by Delhi/UP and Rajasthan.
Kind of disappointing. This was never going to be a massive opener but even with tempered expectations, these are on a low side. Which is sad, IMO. Hope it has legs. Mon is crucial
Box Office: Patiala House opening weekend collections lowest ever for
AkshayHETAL ADESARA
14 February , 2011
MUMBAI: The box office collections of Akshay Kumar’s films have seen a steady decline. The actor’s latest film – Patiala House, which is directed by Nikhil Advani and has Anushka Sharma as his co-star, failed to create magic at the box office.
With net collections of approximately Rs 151.5 million (Rs 15.15 crore), this is the lowest opening weekend collections for an Akshay Kumar movie.
Akshay’s recent release Action Replayy, which was also a dud at the box office, saw a better opening weekend than Patiala House with net collections of Rs 167.50 million (Rs 16.75 crore).
The weekend break-up of Patiala House is as follows: Friday – Rs 40.5 million (Rs 4.05 crore), Saturday – Rs 50.5 million (Rs 5.05 crore) and Sunday – Rs 60.5 million (Rs 6.05 crore).
Patiala House’s first weekend collections are low even when compared to some of the other recently released films like Raavan, Anjaana Anjaani, Peepli [Live] and I Hate Luv Storys. Barring Tees Maar Khan, which did net collections of Rs 375 million (Rs 37.50 crore) in its opening weekend, most of Akshay’s films have failed to find flavour with the audience.
It remains to be seen how the film fares over the week.
On the other hand, Sudhir Mishra’s Yeh Saali Zindagi’s total net collections after 10 days stand at Rs 88 million (Rs 8.80 crore), whereas Madhur Bhandarkar’s romantic comedy Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji’s net collections in the first week were Rs 207.5 million and that of the second week were Rs 50 million (Rs 5 crore), taking the total box office net collections to Rs 257.5 million (Rs 25.75 crore).
The revamped unit is also floating Tipping Point Films for youth-centric features.
NEW DELHI — Viacom18 Motion Pictures has announced its slate for the financial year 2011-12 (ending March), which includes 10-12 movies, with nine titles already in various stages of production.
One of Viacom18’s major releases is Players, an official remake of The Italian Job starring top actor Abhishek Bachchan and actress Sonam Kapoor. Players is directed by brothers Abbas-Mastan who are known for their stylish action capers such as 2008’s hit Race.
Iconic Bollywood superstar and Abhishek’s father Amitabh Bachchan will star in Buddah (Old Man) directed by Puri Jagannadh, co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures with Bachchan’s banner AB Corp.
Owned as an equal joint venture entity between Viacom Inc. and diversified broadcasting group Network18, Viacom18 Motion Pictures acquired Network18’s film unit The Indian Film Co. last year.
Founded as a specialist film investment entity, TIFC was listed on London’s Alternative Investment Market in June 2007 where it raised £55 million ($83.4 million) to fund its portfolio of films, which included last year’s Indian arthouse release Road, Movie and British director Gurinder Chadha’s latest It’s A Wonderful Afterlife. TIFC’s earlier releases via affiliate Studio 18 included Bollywood hits such as Ghajini, Singh Is Kinng, Jab We Met and Golmaal Returns.
Following the takeover of TIFC and a revamped management structure in place, Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ first release will be romantic musical Tanu Weds Manu that opens February 25, followed by collaborations with acclaimed writer/director Anurag Kashyap that include Gangs of Waseeypur, Michael (working title) and Shaitan (Devil).
“Our release slate for the financial year 2011-12 is a reflection of our direction in the Indian film industry – to establish a significant presence across various spectrums of this business. We have an unparalleled slate with films which span diverse genres right from rom-coms to action, from thrillers to drama,” Viacom18 Motion Pictures COO Vikram Malhotra said.
The company has also launched an affiliate banner Tipping Point Films which will cater to urban and edgy youth-centric films co-produced with film financing entity iRock Media.
Patiala House had steady collections on Monday of around 2.75 crore nett as per early estimates. The drop is around 35% from Friday but the problem is that Friday was low and although Monday is steady the Monday collections are still pretty low. East Punjab and Delhi/UP were best with 25-30% drop from Friday while rest of country fell 40-45%.
If the rest of the weekdays remain steady then the film could get close to 25 crore nett first week otherwise it will finish at 23-24 crore nett. An Akshay Kumar film is expected to get much more than 25 crore nett in the weekend let alone the week.
Two years back films like Kambakkht Ishq and De Dana Dan were doing the Patiala House first week business in three days and considering the healthy market expansion over last two years these are low numbers for Patiala House.
Patiala House does not look like going anywhere theatrically but producers managed to make the film at a reasonable cost thanks to Akshay Kumar on profit sharing deal and rebate that UK government gives for films shot in the country which will mean small losses for some distributors as a worst case scenario while producers have good profits.
Update: ‘Patiala House’ maintains well on Monday
– By Taran Adarsh, February 15, 2011 – 16:19 IST
Mondays are crucial; you get to know which way the film is proceeding – Northwards or Southwards. PATIALA HOUSE, which had a slow start on Friday, but picked up well on Saturday and also on Sunday, maintained steady collections on Monday. The film collected approx. Rs. 2.75 cr on the fourth day, taking the 4-day total to approx. Rs. 18 cr nett. It may be recalled that Akshay Kumar starrers have, in the past, done Rs. 22 cr to Rs. 25 cr nett business in their opening weekend. Keeping that in mind, the 4-day total of PATIALA HOUSE may seem low, but the fact remains that the film is holding well.
PATIALA HOUSE is not only faring well in North India [Delhi-U.P., Punjab], but is maintaining a steady run in Mumbai circuit as well. The Mumbai circuit figures are as follows:- Fri 1.60 cr, Sat 1.80 cr, Sun 2.40 cr and Mon 1.28 cr.
Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
Akshay’s brand value erodes
February 16, 2011 – 08:23 IST
‘Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap’… In simpler terms it means, as you sow so shall you reap. The bitter truth is that Akshay Kumar’s last few films have eroded his brand value and that, I genuinely feel, affected the box-office prospects of PATIALA HOUSE to an extent. Riding high after NAMASTEY LONDON, HEYY BABYY, BHOOL BHULAIYAA, WELCOME and SINGH IS KINNG, five Hits in a row [except TASHAN, which was released before S.I.K.], Akshay was running neck to neck with SRK at that point of time. But Akshay slipped from his position post SINGH IS KINNG, delivering one flop after another. Hits and flops are part of the game, I agree, but it’s his choice of films that has gone against him, when one reflects on his body of work.
PATIALA HOUSE is a good product and deserved a better fate. Of course, the word of mouth is extremely positive and the business also showed an escalation with each passing day, but the fact remains that it has under-performed in India. Ideally, the film should have netted at least Rs. 20 cr in its opening weekend, but the figure it has posted [Rs. 15.25 cr nett] only goes to prove that Akshay’s fan base has eroded over a period of time.
PATIALA HOUSE suffered for one more reason. Like I pointed out in the review of the film, ideally, there ought to be at least six months’ gap between two films of a major star, while PATIALA HOUSE is Akshay’s fourth release in six months [KHATTA MEETHA – 23 July, ACTION REPLAYY – 5 November, TEES MAAR KHAN – 24 December, PATIALA HOUSE – 11 February]. Besides, a lot many people I know weren’t too keen on watching PATIALA HOUSE because they felt that this was yet another mindless entertainer from the actor who enjoyed a virtual monopoly of working in mindless laughathons. He may/may not have realized it, but Akshay had got appallingly typecast and PATIALA HOUSE bore the brunt of it.
Strangely, whenever Akshay has acted in serious films that emphasize on drama, like DHADKAN, EK RISHTAA, AITRAAZ and WAQT in particular, the audience has embraced him and his films warmly. Of course, family dramas do take time to grow at the box-office and that also explains the below-the-mark start of PATIALA HOUSE. A section of the industry also feels that PATIALA HOUSE lacked Hit music, which comes as a surprise since the film is produced by a music company.
Now let’s discuss its economics. The total cost of PATIALA HOUSE stands at Rs. 45 cr [includes Rs 9 cr incurred on P & A]. The producers have already recovered their investment by selling India theatrical rights [Rs. 23 cr], Overseas [Rs. 7 cr], Satellite [Rs. 15 cr] and Music + Home Video combined [Rs. 4.5 cr]. The onus falls on the distributors, who acquired the film at reasonable prices. The film has to sustain on weekdays and also in its second weekend, so that the respective distributors can recover their investment.
PATIALA HOUSE is akin to a fresh start for Akshay. It is amongst Akshay’s finest works and if the actor continues to pick and choose his films diligently, instead of working in same genres, he would once again claim the title of ‘Darling of the Masses’. There’s a lesson to be learnt!

Patiala House fell very badly at on Tuesday with around 1.90 crore nett business. Multiplex business had held up on Monday probably due to Valentines Day but collections came crashing down on Tuesday. Single screens have low since day one.
The film has so far collected around around 20.50 crore nett in five days and could add another 3-3.50 crore nett to finish the week on 23.5-24 crore nett.
The year which started on a very good note with No One Killed Jessica and Yamla Pagla Deewana seems to be petering out with 2 more major releases to go before the break for the Cricket World Cup.
After No One Killed Jessica and Yamla Pagla Deewana, Dhobi Ghat and Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji were saved by low costs and satellite rights despite failing at the box office but with Patiala House the producers will be saved by satellite rights costs but most distributors who did not even pay big money will still be in the red.

Are these his ratings???
Seems like he is heavily biased towards bachhans…
Raavan, Sarkar Raj and D6 …4 stars…where as movies like rock on or rocket singh got 3.5 from him…
Drowna is accompanying movies like 3 idiots, Avatar, Peepli live, guzarish, MNIK nd OUAIM in 3 stars category…
Don’t have regards for any of these critics who are biased….And this person got national awards…

Saturday Update: Patiala House
Sunday 13th February 2010 11.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Just gone past the stage of feeling sorry for Akshay, his poor choices have caught up with him.

i would never call lagaan a sports movie as the backdrop was entirely difficult and the cricket part mostly came as a shock to viewers which was hardly there in promotion but even though its still the best sports movie which has emerged from india
akshay tried to milk the sucess of monty panesar(loose adaptation) and his rise in u.k but just like what aditya chopra did it with the life of mir ranjan negi in cdi and in both cases movie where highly dramitized
the presence of nasir hussain( the second generation immigrant from chennai) and his help to akki is symbolic though
even the famous 70 min dialague in cdi was the direct rip off from miracle( a cult movie on ice hockey)
hopefully indian director and producers should realise we have enough legendary content on sports life which if produced originalaty can become cult
one wonders when we would see the life history of flying sikh(milkha singh) or p.t usha in celluliod that has the potential to be real classic

India’s Viacom18 Announces 2011 Movie Slate

Patiala House Has Steady Monday
Tuesday 15th February 2011 11.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Patiala House Falls Flat On Tuesday
Wednesday 16th February 2011 12.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
