the other point here is about abhishrek–its good to see him exercise caution after BB –but to do nothing else for one year for essentiually a

supporting role where he wont get much credit should be a concern to his fans and apologists
ps–i think with aamir, abhishrek will get the best chance to trump the villian (if there ever was given the genre)
time for abhishrek to ‘avenge’ dhoom 2 esp the the Ash-HR kiss!!
Abhishrek has certain demons to deal with here…lol

    • Yes Dhoom and demon must be synonymous to Abhishek.

Dhoom 1 was the first hit in his already long career – but John got more out of it since the movie made him an overnight youth star for his style quotient. No ramp model could have asked for a better outcome in the second year of his career.

Dhoom 2 was of course the downfall of Abhishek’s promise with which the media went a bit overboard in 2005. Hrithik turned him into an irrelevant side actor while making merry with Ash. The ‘irrevelance’ became more prominent as the movie went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters and not another hit like the first one.

Worse of it all, 8 years after Dhoom 1 – we see John still hogging limelight in Race 2 and also has an interesting release in Shootout at Wadala next year. Whereas Abhishek is reduced to doing one movie a year due to lack of offers – and getting only supporting roles!

Even as producers, John has gone way ahead. While Abhishek managed to ride on his ‘Paa’ – John produced one of the best movies this year which was also a Superhit!

This is an interesting story, Saw this on couple of different sites.

    http://daily.bhaskar.com/article/ENT-aamir-khan-may-put-end-to-dhoom-franchise–4173682-NOR.html

‘Dhoom 3’ might me the last of the Dhoom franchise courtesy Aamir Khan.

As per speculations, Aamir who dislikes to be replaced especially in sequels, as he believes that his character should be immortalized and not replicated, has allegedly entered into a contract with the producers of the film.

The contract mentions that after ‘Dhoom 3’ there shall not be any further franchise of the most talked speedster film.

Taking the speculation ahead, if the producers wish to go ahead with the franchise then Aamir shall be not replaced and would continue as one of the leading star cast like the constant characters of the film, Abhishek Bachchan as Jay Dixit and Uday Chopra as Ali mechanic.

“If this happens, there is no scope for the franchise to grow since Dhoom is known for its adventurous stories with the negative characters playing the surprise element,” adds a film critic who wished not to named.

Meanwhile, YRF spokesperson stated the story as baseless “There is absolutely no truth in any part of this query,” spokesperson concluded.

But, if rumours are to believed, his upcoming film Dhoom 3, which was also set to hit the marquee on Christmas this year, has apparently been pushed forward. The Aamir Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer is said to now release on December 17 instead.

According to the trade, the change of date is to capitalise on the Christmas vacations, with no other major film releasing during the period.

A source from the production house says, “The makers are still in two minds about deciding the exact date. The banner is also considering December 20 for the film’s release.”

The spokesperson from YRF remained unavailable for comment.

    • If it is releasing on 25th Dec then it has two weekdays on 26th and 27th to reckon with. Even otherwise I think CE pretty much maxed the screen count and the 3 day – 100 cr collection is pretty much what one can match. Maybe 110 crs but you need the second and third day to be holidays. With a 25th Dec release date, D3 can just break the opening day record but the 3 day total will be within 100 surely. If anything K3 has a better chance at the 3 day record as it has 3 open days of Diwali and it is smartly releasing after the Pooja day. So K3 – 3day will be greater than D3 3 day if D3 is releasing on Christmas. In the Long run both can go past 3I assuming CE doesnt break that.

      Like

      • CE had an unparalleled release date with friday being a holiday and saturday being day after Eid and then Sunday. You need similar kind of release date for the 3 day record to be broken. Whether D3 releases on 20th or 25th , you cannot match the CE release date, hence breaking the 3 day record is very difficult IMO

  8. There is once again a ‘biggest-film-around’ vibe to this latest one in the series. And one can hardly disagree. It’s the sort of film that’s really beyond trailers and posters in the sense that you don’t really have to produce great stuff on either score to get this the biggest initial around. Of course the quality of the film does matter for the final number. Which is not to say I don’t expect an effective trailer or good posters here. Do think however that this preliminary one isn’t very flattering to Aamir. Not that he’s doing anything wrong but this sort of ‘physique’ shot works less easily with him. The way it might have with Hrithik or someone else in that gym body mould. Not that it matters in terms of raising audience interest. And in any case the real message here is ‘Aamir in Dhoom, ‘Nuff said’!

          • I wish they had set it in a major Indian city. Would have gone well with the times (a return to India moment in many ways) but also would have made for a better film. Yes it’s a Hollywood-inspired genre but it doesn’t have to be set in Chicago or a city outside India. But once again it’s the colonization discourse at work here. It’s not enough to emulate the genre, the ‘Indian’ must be seen as comfortably occupying Hollywood space.

It might seem to be the sort of plastic genre where the city doesn’t make a difference and so on. This is true upto a point. Because when a film is set on more local terrain there are automatically more immediate physical and cultural cues that anchor the subject. Actually after D2 it would have been fun to go more in the other director and do a much more rooted Dhoom. But even if not a big less visited Indian city would have been great. When you do it on South Africa or Chicago it’s automatically the tourist view of these places. The film then becomes about a city onto which the subject is simply grafted on rather than being connected to it in a more organic sense.

Now it might seem that the audience doesn’t care about all this but I disagree. They might not be able to ‘theorize’ about this stuff but this is where a film can be more or less liked. for instance even though D2 did very well I thought then and I do now that it could have been the first film to touch 100 crores. In 2006. But they went in for the low-hanging fruit, the script was pedestrian, the face-off wasn’t really there, it was still enjoyable fare but it could have been more. With Aamir on board I certainly expect the best script of the franchise so far.

But i would still bet on D3 for opening bigger. Aamir’s presence, plus aamir in a negative role for rhe first time ( am ignoring the ice – candy act in earth ). Add to it the Dhoom Franchise.

This one should open huge. It should definitely have the biggest day. I’m fairly sure that it can touch 37.5 easily ( on 98-100 % occupancy ). If this movie cannot get a 100 % opening , none can.

Actually looking at the history of the franchise as well as what other films have been doing it recent times it really shouldn’t do less than 300. But again all of that depends not just on the quality of the film but the kind of product it is.

    Katrina

In other words, Aamirs contribution to d3 success should be even less than his contribution to 3i (though aamir would have definitely made the script better and more water tight in d3!)

As for krish3—it’s just a one-man show (the goodies/gimmicks arent there other than the superhero angle that in itself isn’t exactly safe in Bollywood!!

    • it would be disappointing if both films did not exceeds 200 crores by significant margins. I would expect each film to repeat its previous performance. All else being equal D3 should easily have the biggest initial and final gross. But beyond this it of course depends on the film. However there would be no excuse for either film not crossing 200. If YJHD can do 185 or so largely on the strength of multiplexes a Krrish 3 or a D3 with universal appeal should do way more than this in every sense.

      • I will go opposite to what Satyam says here. K3 will have the bigger 3 day initial than D3 purely because of the release date. Long term i agree both has the potential to go over 200. D3 ofcourse is the bigger film here in terms of pure hype but with rakesh roshan at the helm i expect K3 to be more single screen friendly.

Interestingly no one is talking about the budget of these films. Both should have 100+ cr budget and would be sold for around 200 crs. YRF may distribute D3 themselves in some areas so D3 may have lesser distribution costs. Having said that i am not even sure if 200 crs is good enough for these movies to get into the profits. But no one cares about that, definitely not the likes of Taran or BOI for that matter. Or else Dabang 2 which was sold for 180 crs and made 150 crs would never have been called a superhit!!. And less said about Ra-1 the better.

Ok and something I’ve been meanin to say for a while—

Get aamir and hritik together face to face in any bloody script in dhoom setup

Hritik will rape aamir !!!! Day n nite

BUT I Always felt dhoom2 was one film where abhishrek was unfairly maligned by public and blogs!!!
ANYBODY in place of abhishrek would’ve been overshadowed by HR in dhoom2

Aamir is shrewdly benefitting fro the dhoom1 & 2 momentum which has a lot of contribution from HR & even abhishrek

Aamir however is lucky and safe here (like in 3i)

The roles won’t be fair (forget equal)
    But in a DHOOM setup

    Give them equalish roles

And I won’t even rule out abhishrek giving aamir a run for his money!!

    Like

    • disagree actually.. in a fair face-off he wouldn’t have overshadowed Abhishek..in the earlier MPKDH though the film didn’t work most preferred Abhishek even though he had a supporting role. The thing is when you do these face-offs you have to play to the strengths of each star. Hrithik got his stuff, Abhishek didn’t. But in scenes where he had the chance he was very effective. For instance in the climactic fight where he jumps without a parachute and so on. Hrithik has certain strengths as a star which come out well in certain genres. So Dhoom plays more to his strengths than Aamir’s. Actually even Abhishek is fine in the genre. No one had a problem with him in the first Dhoom. Because he has a certain physicality that in a more restrained way works well against the villain’s flamboyance. But it still has to be given enough space. So while I agree this isn’t Aamir’s genre he has vastly more credibility as an actor and so can bring some other resources to the table. In the same way he wouldn’t have seemed ideal for the Ghajini part but he did very well here.

On D3 here’s the thing. I am quite confident there won’t be a repeat of D2 for Abhishek here. But the media narrative completely favors Aamir. And for obvious reasons. Also this isn’t the Bol Bachchan deal. It’s harder to get the better of a villain who has the cool stunt moments, the big actress and so on. They would have to give Abhishek’s character some real space for parity to be possible. In BB he had the obvious attention-attracting moments with the double and so on. On that note if he does Happy New Year I am very confident he’d get the better of SRK, specially since this doesn’t look to be the usual kind of role for SRK (according to Farah Khan). Plus there’s a rumor that Abhishek might have another double here. But with D3 Aamir is a much much bigger star at the moment and there’s not much Abhishek can do about the narrative.

      Like

      • to add to this the dark brooding type often gets the better of the cheerful, happy guy in this sort of face-off. But again things have to be kept fair. I always thought that the first Dhoom was the better film because it had the right balance. D2 could have made a 100 in 2006 had it been a better script. With Aamir around though I expect the best film of the franchise and I’m also interested in seeing how they deal with the face-off with two ‘cerebral’ types.

        • and here’s another mental experiment on that score. Consider how it would be if in Yuva Hrithik did Vivek’s role (Ratnam apparently wanted him once)..!

The thing is that when you have plastic genres it favors a certain kind of star. But for the more serious star-actor you need a better set-up. Because if it’s about the plastic the relatively superficial actor/star benefits. When it’s about the authentic that’s where the men can be separated from the boys. Could you imagine Hrithik doing a Guru?!

i think abhi will benefit tremendously from D3 because aamir never over-shadows the co-stars and opts for an overall good product. So Abhi is quite likely to deliver a competent performance here.

          Like

          • yes that’s quite true. Aamir for instance would never do a D2. He would of course know how it could benefit him but he’s much more interested in the larger integrity of the script. We saw this in RDB for example where he wasn’t interested in dominating the film in the usual ways. In fact a Hindi star in Siddharth’s role quite easily have stolen the film from him (this role was once offered to Abhishek incidentally as was Aamir’s own part!). But beyond this I think the reason this works for Abhishek is that Aamir isn’t on home terrain with this genre the way say Hrithik was and many contemporary stars could be. So for him too this is something different because he’s actually never done this sort of thing before. Nonetheless if the D2 model is maintained where the villain has the cool stuff and of course the big actress it’s hard to equalize this on the other side unless you either have the star looking physically dominant (which is certainly possible) and/or more importantly if there is an authentic face-off. The last bit is really the crucial point here with respect to the overall film. Aamir has praised the script, the director also seems to be one of those with Bachchan on the mind (Bachchan Pandey in Tashan) so once again I am expecting something interesting here vis-a-vis Abhishek but also in terms of the film. At least my own standard is this — if this isn’t the best film of the franchise and if Abhishek-Aamir don’t have scenes that count here I’d consider the film a write-off irrespective of what else happened, who got the credit and how it did.

someone wrote abt HR and Aamir in one frame and HR dominating – unfortunately this might be true purely from physical aspect maybe – even Abhi has towering personality but can’t blame aamir for that! He has a real disadvantage of smaller height but still he hasn’t managed that not hinder his stupendous track-record

            Like

          • The height only matters relative to one’s overall physicality. Kawaljeet once upon a time was a very tall guy who didn’t get anywhere. Similarly while Aamir, Salman, SRK have all been on the shorter side among the three SRK has more of a screen presence even though the other two are better looking and in a textbook sense Aamir is probably the best of the three. So it all depends. Similarly the height issue became very relevant in the age of masala cinema when you had epic registers and therefore ‘epic’ heroes. In this context having a certain kind of physicality became much more important. Actually the fact that Salman does this masala stuff or even Aamir has done something like Ghajini would have been considered hilarious once upon a time. Trends change even in this sense. But greater or lesser height is not an absolute good or bad. Admittedly Aamir is shorter relative to the standards of any age but still this is not the end of the discussion as his career shows.

He pumped iron and dieted for Ghajini; for 3 idiots he had to shed the muscles; but he played badminton to get a lean look without the muscle; for Dhoom 3, Aamir is said to have been under the guidance of his Dr. Dhurandhar, eaten small meals, achieved an ideal weight of 65-68 kg, with less than 10% body-fat. He plays a gymnast-circus artiste sort of character, so his small frame is probably ideal for the role– a 6′ muscled Hritik or John Abraham could not achieve the desired look.

I just hope his risk pays off. But Aamir’s risks are usually calculated ones — and he ensures that the film ultimately wins along with its team

            Like

          • Not sure if the ‘critics’ are sneering. These types simply follow the box office and Aamir is unimpeachable on these grounds. What does happen is that fans of other stars start attacking him for purely partisan reasons. I personally don’t think this shot works with him. Even though he’s worked on his body once again his overall body structure doesn’t reward this kind of shot (hrithik would be fine here or even a certain other kind of body, not necessarily a gym one, might be fine too). This doesn’t mean he won’t be very good at his role here. But yes it is a challenging part for him oddly enough because he’s never had the ‘lightness’ as a star-actor to pull off the flamboyant parts. With the exception of Fanaa where in the first half he did the flamboyant part very well. The trick on this sort of terrain is for the good actor to pull back a bit. This is hard to do. The superficial actor just does his (or her) thing and that’s enough. The deeper actor however has to get aligned with the pitch of the film without emptying out his greater acting resources. Because then the performance doesn’t work at all. But there is certainly a ‘newness’ here that Aamir almost uniquely brings to the franchise. Because everyone else has either been part of it before and/or has done similar things elsewhere. Aamir hasn’t. Which makes it interesting and ‘risky’ at the same time. Having said that this is a more academic argument in some ways. Because the reviewers are not likely to care nor those who judge purely by the box office. It does make a difference to the audience but this ‘reception’ almost never becomes a part of the narrative in India. In other words if the film works in a big way people assume the audience liked everything and so on.

          • I am seriously skeptical on how much acting chops both Aamir and AB will get to display in this one. I think the tone of the movie will be similar to Dhoom 2 where the antagonist is not out and out evil but more someone who is bad but with a golden heart or something of that kinds. He will sing songs, romance Katrina Kaif (we are forgetting her here) and will get a chance to display his skill in parkour. I think parkour will be the key focus here as that whole gymnast body was built for Aamir to do that convincingly or atleast part of it (am sure there will be a body double as you cannot become a Jackie Chan by training in 1 year) and Indian audiences are not exposed to those kind of acrobats. Uday Chopra will get to play the funny guy again and will have screen time too like the first two parts.
In all this even if there are confrontational scenes between AB and AK the tone will be light. Hand to Hand combat can be ruled out between the two as AK will not stand a chance (on screen due to their heights) in fight scenes against AB Jr as AB Jr is naturally better at that. I think they will retain the essence of Dhoom which is basically to keep the fun factor and not make a gritty kind of movie.
BTW Aamir also played a flamboyant character with gusto in Rangeela

  16. Just saw that the krish3 & dhoom3 diverted into an abhishrek vs the rest debate above…
C’mon folks—one can compare ‘like for like’—
Personal tastes are a different issue–have NOTHING against abhishrek infact feel for his ‘underperformance’.
One CAN compare HR, SRK, SK, Aamir on different parameters and its reasonable for fans to get carried away.
But the FACT is that as much as even I WANT abhishrek to be amongst the names above, he simply isn’t!!!

Aamir has different standards and I gauge him on THOSE STRINGENT criteria and mention the ‘hidden/overlooked points’ like his deliberate infrequent release rate etc.
But that doesn’t take away from Aamirs proven track record.

    BUT
As for abhishrek–he is simply not in the top bunch.
To be honest abhishrek is a good actor but he’s not great shakes even in the acting deptt either imo
I don’t share the view that he is an acting thespian!
There’s this discourse being encouraged that HR is the body and abhishrek is some acting powerhouse!! Don’t agree.
Even in acting deptt, won’t say either of them is superior to the other though they are ‘different’ actors.
Abhishreks problems are that his areas of strength would have fit the person specification of a hero from two decades ago.
In the current climate, he just doesn’t have the all round ability—and we have seen enough of him to say this now
Also for star appeal, box office and even range & suitability to the current Bollywood requirements, abhi simply falls short
Well, this maybe uncomfortable to hear but it’s a fact
It’s proven by his track record and box office imo

Would add though, that now in the given circumstance abhi has done well to sign what an be technically called as ‘second lead’ roles (though Satyam may argue lol) insrk-farahs film or dhoom3 –but the fact is that in the given scenario, he needs to be seen in successful films, stay in circulation and then slowly branch out into lead roles and even production…
Infactots ironical that abhishrek shoudl follow the ‘John Abraham model’–I know this all may sound painful to his fan,but there’s nothing wrong in reality check –I wish him all the best

The PROBLEM starts when fans get so carried away by their fandom that it all becomes about BLACK OR WHITE…
One can be a fan and still be CRITICAL of certain aspects of your ‘idol’–the perspective and issue matters. 🙂

        • agree… there is a kind of cinema that can be accepted as a compromise when an actor needs box office success.. as long as of course this eventually leads to more meaningful cinema once again. Otherwise the dustbins of cinematic history are full of actors (and fans!) who thought the present was everything! We don’t exactly care today about Stallone’s Cobra! Most of SRK’s iconic cinema seems completely passé. What survives over time is that which can have a shelf life. Or at least the great classic. The films that are often celebrated today are neither. Not every important or significant film acquires an audience. This is true in any art form. Some worthwhile works always remain relatively obscure with only minorities willing to seek them out. The iconic or the popular can never be confused with the worthwhile. But in any case only films that can be retrieved by later generations and are not simply those that become stale two weeks after release have a chance at real reinvention. Which is not to say that I have anything against a film that is hugely enjoyable but that will not really stand the test of time. I am a massive consumer of ‘guilty pleasures’. However the problem with a lot of contemporary Bollywood is that it isn’t particularly enjoyable either. And then you have this crazy dominant discourse on the other side which pretends it’s only about 100 crores or 200 crores or whatever. In fairness this discourse does not really represent audience tastes. Because while people might show up for certain kinds of films and while I too have criticized the current audience more than anyone else what gets missed in the media narratives is that people show up for films for all kinds of reasons. And just because a film makes huge amounts of money doesn’t mean that the audience also has the greatest respect for those films and actors. I might show up dozens of Hollywood blockbusters without considering any of them very good or having any great admiration for the actors associated with them. Specially in an age where the industry is becoming increasingly Hollywoodized the package becomes that much more important. Getting back to Abhishek it’s easy to see a path where he appears in some big grossing films, the media narrative might remain negative but he gets his due attention from the audience, there might even be more moments like BB where he’s seen as being the more dominant actor in the film, then he has a film like Mere Apne or whatever which is somewhat more meaningful but still relatively safe and by this point he’s brought back his box office credibility and gets a big initial or whatever, so on and so forth. If this is the limit of what he’s doing then no matter what his skill set might be he’s in a way reducing himself to the level of most of his peers. However if he uses this as a springboard to move onto to truly interesting things again (albeit doing a better mix even at that point in terms of balancing out the Dostana kind of venture with a Ratnam or whatever) all of this will be an acceptable compromise. Speaking for myself and I suspect many true Abhishek fans I’ve never been in the game of just wishing success for him at whatever cost. Because if he were to follow some of those other career paths we’d lose the actor we like and respect in some of the films you’ve mentioned. And since I’ve always been devoted to the actor inasmuch as he’s represented a certain kind of performance or choice of roles and not simply one who’s successful or not in purely commercial terms I can only celebrate choices that read Ratnam or Mehra or Sippy and some others and potentially interesting projects even if with lesser directors. And this is what people miss in a lot of these ‘debates’. Most fans are really about their star getting successful doing ‘whatever’. That’s never constituted my interest in Abhishek, it’s never even constituted my interest in his father! As for those who present counter-arguments they reveal nothing more than either their own dismal lack of taste or their completely ignorance of history in these matters. Now it might be that some of these commercial films Abhishek is doing turn out to be better than expected for the terrain. I certainly expect this from D3. Thought BB was more than decent given the director (though with that suggestive setup a lot more could have been achieved). And so on. But even in the best case scenarios these are works that I’d go crazy over. Similarly I’d still make other choices for the purely commercial if I were in Abhishek’s shoes. I’d look South in a variety of ways. I think even for the purely commercial better choices can be made. But that’s a different debate. Part of the issue here is that a certain tension perhaps remains unresolved in Abhishek’s mind. he’s clearly not ‘with’ the contemporary multiplex program, ethically or aesthetically. but he also doesn’t seem as invested in masala as it exists today in its Telugu configuration. What he is unwilling to do (for whatever reason) is look at more meaningful Tamil variants whether in masala cinema or in their new wave attempts. And this is a great loss because he is ideally suited for those films. In fact this spectrum offers him everything from escapist cinema to even vastly better attempts at the kind of cinema that Umesh Shukla is probably capable of. So it’s unclear why he continues to be boxed into the Bollywood menu. But in any case there is this deeper tension. So neither with the multiplexes nor with the ‘new’ masala. To avoid both alternatives (and I can certainly sympathize with this position, even agree with it) one needs to have the Aamir kind of vision where you really go wherever you think that worthwhile cinema is and more importantly enable it one way or the other. But that’s a bigger project and requires a complete and ‘foundational’ rethinking in a variety of ways. Otherwise whether it’s D3 or Mehra, one is restricted to Bollywood options and the greater problem here if one is Abhishek might not be one option or the other but the frame itself. He really needs a Lagaan-like leap where he really invests himself in a truly different sort of project (not ‘like’ Lagaan but whatever it is that serves his ends) and then builds a very different trajectory from there. Ironically it is precisely because he’s a fine talent who can relatively effortlessly range across the board and be convincing in a Guru or a BM or a Dostana or a BB with equal ease that he always gets his options the moment he makes himself available for a certain kind of cinema (always assuming an essential box office viability). His problem has remained an uncertain box office. Otherwise the industry has always been willing to cast him in a vast variety of things. there are important Southern talents who’d love to work with him in the right film. He still has a lot to play with which is why some of these too obvious choices disappoint me. I understand the compromise but I don’t understand why better things can’t be attempted to achieve the same ends. Alright a D3 is a no-brainer perhaps. But a Farah Khan film, even if he has a double here as is rumored or even if he gets the better of SRK, isn’t necessarily so (and I’m not referring to a negative media narrative here). Similarly there is a risky which has a certain appeal even when it doesn’t work in box office terms and there is one that harms the star in a precise sense when it fails. One can separate one from the other. Ultimately these are things the star can only work out for himself. So there is a debate to be had about his choices one way or the other. Of course this is very different from the crass suggestions that are often made online about what he ought to do or not. Because the people making them wouldn’t be able to separate bubble gum from a fine Indian desert or on the other hand would praise bubble gum more for greater sales across the board! Such opinions can safely be dismissed, one should in fact only read them if one can withstand the assault to one’s better taste!

Again, Nice analysis overall. However, I am a bit confused over at first you suggest that you prefer him doing meaningful cinema with Ratnam, Mehra etc, then you suggest that he is suited for the masala cinema from the south and he should invest his energy in few of those. And then you go on to say that you are least interested in his success at any cost, But you suggest to go look towards south cinema masala format? Isn’t that going the route of low brow masala format? I am a bit confused?
Having said that, As a fan I do want him to succeed not at any cost but when any Tom, Dick and Harry is piling on crores over some pathetic cinema, why shouldn’t jr do the same? Agreed he shouldn’t do it at any cost, upto D3 and D2 are fine, But i dont think he should go the Akshay Kumar way (in the likes of Khiladi 786 and now Boss)??

            Like

          • My point is a)he should continue the meaningful stuff as and when he gets the opportunity but balance it out with safer stuff in a more strategic way b)if he is doing box office just for the numbers one or two obvious films like Dhoom might be ok but he could rely on a more meaningful masala from the South (specifically Tamil cinema) or a middle cinema from the same that would give him a particular signature but also be much more suited for his physicality and so forth. In other words the choice isn’t Salman’s Telugu masala or nothing. There are other avenues. Which doesn’t mean he can’t do Bombay based escapist cinema at all. Just that those films will never play to his strengths in the same way.

There were rumors about Abhimaan, Do aur Do Paanch and even MKS (with saif) remake with him being in the lead ? If others are piggy backing on Bachchan’s remakes, why shouldn’t he do it too? He is always compared to his father from the day he started, It will be nothing new (even though his style is completely different from his fathers and choices). • I personally wouldn’t want him to touch a single Bachchan remake for the simple reason that on the very important films there’s nothing anyone can possibly ‘add’ in any sense. Sure there can always be intelligent films that rework the terrain without literally remaking stuff. But Ratnam has already done some of this. Or Rohan Sippy has in his own way. Either way there aren’t enough people in Bombay intelligent enough or thoughtful enough to do this. If on the other hand you remake the lesser films that’s alright in one sense but still pointless because for a script of that level you don’t need to ‘remake’. You can do original scripts! So then it becomes about just using the cache of the original to get an initial. I can personally never endorse that sort of move. By the way (and though this kind of film wouldn’t work today) I would love a Ganga Ki Saugandh kind of film married to Maoist politics! Would be truly subversive. But no one would see it!

Fair enough on Bachchan’s remake. However, there are other films that he can remake as well. Such as, Saagar (ofcourse the Haasan role here). I really think Sippy should consider this one. It would certainly work for today’s time. Also, always felt Khudgarz is one movie where Roshan and Jr can be pitted against each other and instead of him playing a character from UP he should do a southern act (unlike sinha – Originally it was Kamal Haasan to play Sinha’s role with his Tamil Background against Rishi Kapoor). And I know I will get some gaalis for this but I definitely think AAA can be remade with all the respective Kins of the main characters. Just too tough to get a Pran or Jeevan from today.

Will wait for the first proper trailer to pass judgment on it because the first such D2 trailer was very effective. With Aamir on board I was hoping for something a bit better for the genre but at least on the advertising so far they’ve gone for the most stale approach. The posturing on the poster and so on. Even within this genre it’s hard to say that one couldn’t do something more imaginative. And if you’re taking Aamir and presenting him exactly as you would John or Hrithik there’s something absurd about this too. Not saying all of this matters at the box office but more imagination could certainly have helped! If they’re using the poorest advertising to suddenly spring the best film of the franchise on us they’re even sillier than I thought! Nonetheless will wait for the longer trailer. On Abhishek he looks fine here but he was fine on the D2 images as well (or for that matter the trailer). The way these things are done they have very little to do with the actual footage. And so far we don’t have images from the latter. In any case I’m less interested in this question and more in whether Abhishek and Aamir get some good screen time together and make at least a few scenes work for this kind of thing.

I know this is a franchise but they’re not even putting in some minimal effort here. Think it would be a horrible mistake to simply upgrade the villain but make it business-as-usual otherwise.

    • Given the audience we might be the bigger fools for objecting! What’s odd about this though is that if you operate with the assumption (as I certainly do) that everyone with a pulse will show up for D3 well you don’t then need this amateur hour (as you’ve put it)! On the other hand if the advertising nonetheless matters why not start with some real stuff?! Just doesn’t make any sense either way. It’s one thing to have subpar posters and quite another to have poor motion posters/teasers. And here Bollywood departs from Hollywood even in this regard. When a movie like the Avengers is produced they too know that everyone will show up. But they still do everything professionally to get the most enticing teasers out and what not. So if you are excited about the film you get more excited (!). if you are even slightly on the fence the build-up reels you in. On the other hand the message with this early stuff on D3 or the Krrish song trailers seems to be ‘yeah we know it’s cheap and terrible and/or the songs are miserable but are you really going to miss the film for those reasons?’! The answer seems to be in the negative and so they race ahead with these dubious decisions. Forget comparing this stuff to Hollywood (one wonders if Rakesh Roshan is sometimes referring to some other Hollywood industry in a galaxy far far away.. but wait.. he literally thinks he’s offering LOTR competition on the SFX!), it would be embarrassing to put this up against some of the best East Asian sci-fi/action/fantasy and what have you. But again the audience simply doesn’t seem to care. The true big budget blockbuster should not end up looking worse than much else that’s on offer! D3 or Krrish3 don’t so far have the best campaigns even by Bollywood standards. K3 had a good first trailer and everything since has been terrible. D3 hasn’t even gotten off the ground yet in this regard.

Buzz is that even Aamir Khan cannot go ahead with his plans for his next ‘Dhoom 3’ without the producer signing off on them

Aamir Khan apparently wants to repeat the formula that he implemented in the run up to his film ‘Delhi Belly’ that starred his nephew Imran, for his upcoming release, ‘Dhoom 3’. Buzz is that the star wants to hold focus group screenings for the film, to take in suggestions made by select audiences and later incorporate it into the final cut.

However, insiders say that the film’s producer Aditya Chopra may not give in to his request.

Says a source close to the actor, “Aamir is known for his penchant for perfection. He took a lot of time before releasing ‘Delhi Belly’. He had done the same with Imran’s film and hopes to do the same with ‘Dhoom 3’.”

An insider from the production house says, “He has already forwarded his request to Adi but he is not sure the producer will agree.”

    Express delivery
The shroud of secrecy around his next film, ‘Dhoom 3’, has been so thick that Aditya Chopra is leaving no stone unturned in fiercely guarding the details of the Aamir Khan starrer.. Aamir has been shooting for Rajkumar Hirani’s film in Delhi and Adi apparently has decided to send his messenger bearing the first draft of the film’s trailer for the star’s eyes only. The reason allegedly to send someone personally carrying his package is to prevent the details from being hijacked. Says a source, “Aamir is involved in taking the marketing decisions around the film’s promotions. Someone from Adi’s studio will personally escort the package to the actor.”

So, something like Talaash, he wasnt willing to compromise though he very likely knew its BO implications and keot the film true to his vision. Ofcourse,he might have had a fond hope for it to do better than it did but am sure he was prepared for it to fare even worse than it did. For something like D3, am sure he knows this is all about forgettable entertainment and BO and it will shape up accordingly. Ofcourse, there is potential for it to be better than first two installments due to Aamir’s involvement. So, am not all concerned here. This is not going to be ground breaking stuff but will be more than viable commercially.

    • that is possibly true but the first theatrical trailer was incredibly lopsided.. with D2 the comparable trailer had parity. But yeah he does seem to be in on the action a lot more here, in a qualitative sense. There also seem to be a couple of face-offs. All depends on how everything’s managed in the film.

Akshay was at his peak at that time but still the screen times were good. There’s a similar situation here in terms of the 1 superstar (Aamir, Akshay) vs 1 star face off (Saif, Abhishek).

      • It’s not going to make a difference for sure. Music hardly matters as Krrish 3 showed.
The buzz is here in UK. It’s the only film people are talking about watching (though must say Ram Leela was very popular from my anecdotal observation, much more than any film since CE). There is a lot of expectation and without a real promotion strategy ala Ghajini or OSO.
Not releasing the soundtrack only really works if the soundtrack is good! If it’s bad, it shouldn’t affect the film unless the film is poorly received.
Definitely an effort to not leak anything, but it’s hardly the “kind” of film or genre where much can be kept secret! We know there is a cop and a villain! And the cop usually wins! Talaash would have made more sense, as it was a suspense thriller with an important twist.
How much curiosity can there be in a film like Dhoom or Race? It’s all been there done that.

      • This Malang song is a circus song featuring plenty of gymnasts. Aamir has worked hard to achieve the body of a circus gymnast. He apparently aimed at a body weight with fat less than 10%. He and Katrina have worked hard for their fitness with regard to the cicus scenes. Aamir is also said to have taken ballet cum tap dancing lessons for a month in australia. I hope that all this hard work pays off and the song is worth the effort and expense. Katrina has spoken about one risky circus shot that she and aamir did without safety net. Foolish though brave. Anyway best of luck to team Dhoom 3 — and may the carping cynics get to shut up finally.

    • The first one was 130 minutes and the second one was 150 minutes even though D1 had the better story and script. The Dhoom series are all about being slick; I’m guessing the emotional stuff in D3 made its length this long.

      Like

      • yes the masala past and probably better characterization adds to the length here. I’m once again hopeful that we might get the most substantial film of the series here..

        Like

        • And the length also makes me hopeful that we have a more even battle between Abhishek and Aamir. Also I’m very excited to see how the movie ends especially with this newly added masala element. Since we’re dealing with one of the 3 Khan’s here, will they kill him at the end (and risk angering/disappointing the audience) or do a D2 like ending? Let’s wait and watch!

          Like

          • It might be an ending like the original Dhoom. One of the shots somewhere seemed to suggest this. But it could also be a Batman-like deal where he re-emerges somewhere at the end. The d2 ending was a bit false though. The idea that the cop suddenly goes soft and lets the lovers escape was odd. The first film was better even in this respect.

            Like

          • This may end like D1 but Aamir has no love interest in Katrina here. So it cant end like D3. She just accidentally works in circus with Aamir. Here we will see a group of people working as Dhoom team. Look at the star cast on imdb which may throw some light on it. I think Tabrett Bethell is love interest of Aamir.
Btw, Bipasha basu and Diana Penty are also present in the film.

          • @Satyam are you referring to the scene where aamir rides the motorcycle of the bridge? If so I agree. D2’s ending was false, but I’m also thinking of the last time a Big actor died at the end of the movie and all I can come up with is Agneepath. I’m leaning towards thinking Aamir won’t die at the end at this moment but I’ll be satisfied with either ending.

And Aamir’s love interest is definitely Katrina; you can see snippets of the romantic song in the trailer and also they were filming a wedding type romantic song at Millennium Park last summer. And I don’t think Bipasha Basu or Diana Penty are in Dhoom 3. Maybe a 1-2 minute cameo but nothing more significant than that.

Btw both Malang and whatever little snipppets I’ve heard of the “Tu Hi Junoon” song both have a more sad/dramatic sound to them as opposed to the other Dhooms. I think it’ll work well with the overall feel of the film.

This time it is more realistic and intricate stuff, at least that i what has been attempted here. And thats the only reason why i am interested in this movie.
Aamir is sensible enough not to make mismatch pair with katrina.

But to your “Aamir is sensible enough not to make mismatch pair with katrina.”

Someone on this forum said that the audience believes anything the 3 Khan’s do. It’s not about Aamir being sensible or not (which he definitely is). If the audience didn’t have a problem with SRK-Katrina or SRK-Anushka (in Rab Ne) or any other actress the Khans have been paired with, they won’t have a problem with Aamir-Katrina. I for one when I heard Katrina was in this movie just assumed that Aamir-Katrina would have their romantic angle and did not care about the mismatch. And I’m not even an Aamir fan!

At that point, the narrative was that HR is THE better/best star and actor and that he stood ‘taller’ than every actor and hence Abhishek being down in the movie was merely because of HR’s ‘ability’ – not because of the fact that script was ridiculously one-sided. And nobody had any problem with this wonderful ‘theory.’

The film media is especially bad, while tv chaps like Arnab Goswami and ilk are a spl breed of wierdos. Stardust (Magna media which gave the story mentioned above) — it has little credibility. They are adept at making mountains of molehills. Aamir and Abhishek came together on stage during first promo. Second and third featured Aamir and Katrina since the portions dealt with them.

        • Aamir and Abhishek have a very good personal relationship. But here’s what the deal is. Aditya Chopra has in my view made the theatrical trailer and a lot of the advertising much more one-sided than the film is likely to be. And my point here isn’t that he should be ‘kind’ to Abhishek but that this is simply a crude decision on his part. No one says ‘I won’t show up for D3 unless it’s Aamir for 90% of the trailer’! Plus I’ve long believed that this film no matter how big at the box office can be bigger if it really centers around the face-off and creates an emotional arc in this sense. The first film was balanced in this regard. With the second the problem was that when you given the villain the girl, the cool stunts, the best songs, the get ups and so forth there’s very little left for the cop to do except show up mechanically after every heist. Again in the first one Abhishek had some moments with his wife, the comedy with Ali was a bit more spontaneous etc. I still believe this installment will be a lot lot better for Abhishek compared to the second one. He seems to have some good action sequences, looks good in the stills, has a physical advantage over Aamir. Nonetheless with all of this you still need enough characterization and certainly enough of a face-off. Because now the villain even has the masala backstory! It’s not just a question of footage but the kind of footage the actor has. Abhishek had enough footage in D2, that wasn’t the real issue. But either way the theatrical trailer was ridiculously one-sided and though it was extremely effective I think it would have been better with the face-off highlighted (assuming the film has this).

Of course there have been anti-Aamir stories in the media about how he’s deliberately sidelining Abhishek etc. We never hear this with other stars vis-a-vis Abhishek. But what feeds the narrative is some of the advertising we see. On these events they were probably always planned this way. The more important point is: if they were going to have Abhishek even for a song release that didn’t feature him they would have had more of him in the trailer in the first place! Could or should Aamir have ensured that the trailer was more balanced in this sense? One can argue about this but at the end of the day this is an industry not a charity! I still hold the producer responsible because Aamir would have been fine with a more balanced trailer as well. But in any case it’s amusing to see these ‘sympathetic’ stories all of a sudden about how Abhishek ‘the hero of the franchise’ is being ignored and what not when the same folks are quite happy to go after him in every other sense.

But once again do think, specially given the length and some of the stills I’ve seen, that there’s still a good chance Abhishek gets a lot out of this one. But it would have to be something really worthwhile to balance out the impression the advertising has created. In the industry when you’re down in any sense you get to see and face a lot of such stuff. But even by those standards Aditya Chopra has gone much further than he needed to. My point again is that it makes bad business sense. Then again this is an industry where D2 made 85 crores which was phenomenal but no one paused to consider whether the film might have made 100 then (as I certainly believe).

Ironically Abhishek looks to be getting a BB-like deal in HNY.

Rishi Kapoor had a perfectly fine role in AAA. Even the smallest villains in a Desai film made an impression. Now I’m willing to concede that Abhishek has a good outing here but that should be reflected in the trailer. It’s not a question of ‘deserving’ anything here! Aamir already has the central part in the advertising, it doesn’t have to be 90%!

            Like

          • I think here it’s important to remember Devgn’s magnanimity towards Abhishek in case of BB. NO ONE apart from Devgn would have allowed the film to be released with that title especially considering that Abhishek was at his lowest B.O. phase (not that Abhishek’s position is much better even now. He still needs a solid solo hit. Irrespective of what part he has in HNY and D3, it’s a solo hit which will change the narrative for him. Hopefully the Shukla might turn out to be that) and Devgn himself was riding on a streak of solid superhits. He literally allowed Abhishek to walk away with the film- he not only served him a hit on a platter but also gave him very clearly an author-backed part (which played to Abhishek’s strength. His performance of course was the only good thing about that film).

            Like

          • agreed largely.. I’d just add this.. Abhishek might get a BB kind of deal in HNY. without the title of course! Leaving this aside Devgan is very close to the family. I mean really close. No doubt he was magnanimous here but he (along with his father) also owe Bachchan Sr in certain ways. Not saying he did it for that reason, it’s safe to say the families are close enough for this not to be that sort of transactional deal, but there is history here. Additionally Rohit Shetty started his career with Devgan/Abhishek and wanted to bring them together again. Devgan himself said that they thought of having him before but could never find the right part for him. I’d finally say this — it is absolutely true that personal relationships do matter in this business as in any other (Abhishek has a great relationship with SRK as well.. and here I’ve always got the sense that SRK genuinely likes him) it is also the case that these can never completely override good business decisions (forget everything else.. Devgan invested in BB and SRK of course is doing the same with HNY.. you don’t do this just to be generous because these decisions cost too much). In other words you don’t give Abhishek a double in BB or HNY if you think he matters only as much as twenty other stars. Because a star down on his luck and even one who’s hit rock bottom is very different from one who is never at that threshold level of stardom and cannot be even with success. when you have Devgan or now SRK in a film there is an obvious safety net not to mention the other frills in these films. But the star doing a very central part still has to be credible. It can’t just be about performance, it has to be an actor with enough of a star ‘charge’ if you will. Otherwise the film cannot even be marketed a certain way. All this doesn’t mean I disagree with most of what you’re saying. I completely agree that a solo is necessary (if anything I think it’s a bit problematic to get hits with other stars in completely crowd-pleasing genres where films start off with a bang and then go in for more of a family subject solo where these films even when they trend very well and gross very well are unlikely to start off in the same way) but there is a great misperception about multistarrers in more ways than one.

    C’mon folks… Take it easy…
These news reports are there in lots of outlets not only magnamags…

    Another one…

“specially given the length and some of the stills I’ve seen, that there’s still a good chance Abhishek gets a lot out of this one.”–
I also hope so Satyam –but seems there is no smoke without fire…

Note the sequence wherein aamir and abhishrek are darting towards each other on a bike with a ‘rod’…

Abhishrek seems menacing that is the requirement here and ‘devours’ aamir

Now I have nothing against aamir and when he will do anything good in D3, I will be the first to point it out folks –don’t worry

But is it our or the bachchan fans fault that media outlets are reporting this
And is it our fault that forget Hritik, even Abhishrek is proving too much to handle for aamir in this genre ?? 🙂

  84. It is all about marketing. Whether to market it as aamir’s film or a multistarrer. RDB and 3Idiots were multistarrers in the true sense and yet the films are known as aamir’s, not madhavan’s, not Siddharth’s, not Sharman Joshi’s. Even directors like Hirani overshadowed in his films.

D3 is also marketed in the same way. Even if aamir has a 50 percent part or even a 30 percent part, producers like to present them as aamir’s film. In case, it is ajay devgn or akshay kumar in place of abhishek, maybe things might have been different.

Physicality does not matter. As villains in normal masala films look much more stronger, much better and more effective, yet the hero walks away with all the honours. Here funnily, the villain looks like the hero. In Sholay amjad Khan towered over everyone. The ultimate villain.

      • I find it quite saddening, the amount of dismissal and negativity being spilt against Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3. First supposed Hritik fans have gone on and on about how Aamir was not fit ti take his place in the new Dhoom instalment; and now this drama about supposed snub of Abhishek. Seems fake news to me;I just read this news bit about Aamir’s son’s second birthday party yesterday. Aishwarya and daughter were there . If Abhishek had been snubbed by Aamir during promotion of Dhoom 3,, would Aishwarya have bothered to grace an Aamir party?

In any case Aamir seems to lose either way…he is considered unfit for this role — too short, old, uncool; a ‘how dare he barge into this youthful party’ premise. If the film is a hit, his detractors will be there all over the net, saying it’s the others who did the job and the film worked despite his presence. If it’s a flop or a semi-hit — Aamir takes the blame.

I honestly wish he had not taken this role, but done the sort of films for which he won his original fan following — Ghulam, Sarfarosh, 1947Earth and other such solid down to earth films of substance and value. Instead he takes on this glitzy dhoom 3 thing as a sort of challenge perhaps — a negative role of a circus gymnast with a dark story, burning resentment, the lot; interesting possibilities there actually and he even fits in physically. You don’t need to be tall and well built to do such a role. To play a gymnast your body needs to be small, light and flexible; you can be short and still carry off the role. Aamir could even play a jockey. He has continuously worked on his body to fit his role. That’s dedication, perfection….but his critics cannot see it. All they see is an over aged manipulator, a real villian.

Fictional villians come in all shapes and sizes; and agewise too, it does not matter; is there any rule that all leads (positive and negative) should be of a certain age–maximum 40-45? I don’t think so. Whatever your age you should carry it off without looking ridiculous, that’s all.

Aamir was terrific in Rang De Basanti, managing to shine in a multi-starrer. I love that film in its entirety–especially loved Atul Kulkarni and Kunal kapoor, but for me Aamir was specially good, at age 40, carrying off the role of a 25 yr-29 yr old.

I hope all the leads of Dhoom 3 do a good job that gives them credit, that the film succeeds in its entirety, the way Rang De Basanti did.

          • Unfortunately those banking on a film like D3 getting everything right are hedging their bets on the wrong film! It’s the kind of film that is derivative, formulaic and any suggestion of something out of the box and removed from what D1 & D2 offered would 1) defeat the idea of a sequel 2) confuse the audience.
In essence, the film needs to keep to the spirit of the previous ones and upgrade the content by 10-15%. Expecting more is a different film altogether, one of which the majority of fans who turned up to the first two films will probably get irked by.
Aamir does look a little out of place but it’s not going to matter. Remember Ghajini? If an audience can suspend belief and accept him in that kind of violent, angry role then this street smart cocky baddie role won’t need much to convince! My 10-15% upgrade on this film for what it’s worth would have been less stunts/action and more mind games, where the baddie really gets into the mind of the good guys, almost making them vulnerable – and that to be reversed by the end of the film leaving the baddie a shell of himself.
In any case, most of what I have seen is better than I expected and the target audience will almost surely lap this one up – at this point the trailer and first song are pretty solid in securing and consolidating buzz and one would feel pretty confident this is a film unlikely to fall flat with its target audience. Something would have to be vastly wrong compared to what we’ve seen so far to get this one so wrong. But hey it could be famous last words too!

But he is wrong about the 30 second song teasers. He says that films usually release the full song video before the film releases. That’s just not true. From CE to YJHD to A2, K3, Ram-Leela, none of these films released full song videos. Actually among these films only D3 has released a full song video, the title song.

    • the irony here is that when he was at his absolute lowest point he got BB where he was the ‘star’ of that show in very many ways in terms of the role he got and the attention in the advertising as well. He certainly wasn’t lesser in any sense. Now he has BB behind him, the film worked, he got a lot of attention for the part and he’s getting this sort of deal in D3. On the other hand he once again seems to have a great deal in HNY. Doesn’t make any sense. If anything Dhoom is the safest franchise. The producer doesn’t have to go this far. It’s like LRM after Munnabhai. You don’t have to change anything irrespective of how Dutt is doing elsewhere. Here with Dhoom it’s even better because you already have Aamir on board. Nonetheless they’ve systematically constructed a campaign where pretty much everywhere they’ve left out Abhishek. He still gets a somewhat better deal on the stills (which probably get lost in the larger campaign) but elsewhere from the promotions to the trailers to the videos games, at every point in this campaign there’s been this baffling imbalance which simply makes no sense. D2 had parity whatever might have happened later. Here it’s quite clear that Abhishek’s looking sharp, he will probably still have a much better showing here than D2 but somehow the campaign has been designed almost to efface him. Just very strange. Even in the film he doesn’t have a single song. Bizarre.

  110. Aditya Chopra apologizes to Abhishek Bachchan
    Wednesday, 11th December 2013,06:12

With promotion of the latest Yash Raj action adventure flick, ‘Dhoom 3’ in full swing, it has been noticed that Abhishek Bachchan has not been given the treatment he deserved as a consistent star of the film series. Although seen in both the prequels and an integral part of the third film of the series, he was given a miss at a few promotional events whereas Aamir Khan was focused on in entirety. We heard from a source that at the First Look launch of the film ‘Dhoom 3’, it was Aamir Khan who stole the show with his interaction while Abhishek was reduced to a quiet presence in the background. It was noticed at a few other promotional events too where Abhishek was conspicuously missing, especially at the Music launch of the film where Aamir along with co-star Katrina Kaif were present. It was later revealed that Abhishek had no idea about the event. It is no secret that Aamir loves taking centre stage and being in control at everything he does. But it was surprising to note the marketing team of ‘Dhoom 3’ skipping such a valuable detail.

Being a gentleman, Abhishek Bachchan decided to bite the bullet. Instead of bringing the injustice to the forefront, he stayed calm and let it pass. Another source said that although he was not comfortable with the way Aamir Khan was gathering attention at his expense, Abhishek wanted to keep quiet about it. It was then that the Yash Raj Production Team realized their mistake and Aditya Chopra was seen visiting Abhishek Bachchan to apologize and make amends for the injustice meted out to him by the team.

Abhishek Bachchan had reportedly sustained injury during workout in December. Nevertheless, he appeared for the promotional launch of the movie with his torn elbow and did not make a fuss about it. After such dedication towards his work and responsibility, the kind of treatment he has received is uncalled for. And one cannot forget that Abhishek Bachchan has had a long standing relationship with the Yash Raj Banner and has several Yash Raj hits to his name.

Realizing their oversight, Aditya Chopra with team in tow visited Abhishek Bachchan to apologize and make amends. We do not know what words passed between them. But all seems forgiven and back on track. Well, it is never too late to say sorry, what say, Aditya Chopra?

    • LOL, since your descriptions don’t match anything I’ve actually said, since you’re also ripping out of context some of the things I might have said I don’t feel obliged to respond to all of this beyond stating the obvious on the larger point — a story whether partially or completely true, partially or completely false, doesn’t acquire more plausibility when 10 sources report it if all ten can ultimately be traced to same one (in this case unreliable source). I am not commenting on the veracity of this story or any other. Just talking about the larger point here which I also made with the K3 gross. The same story being spun a hundred times doesn’t make it more true. More importantly these aren’t then a 100 stories but just one!

But would you have said exactly the same thing if Hrithik had been here instead of Aamir? Yes the D2 advertising had parity more or less but when you also love the narrative of Hrithik trouncing Abhishek there or whatever I don’t here you say that Hrithik also had advantages here in a lot of ways including having the love angle and so forth. This was hardly the fairest thing imaginable. D3 I still think will have Abhishek doing a lot better than this. Yes despite the completely one-sided campaign so far. Nonetheless if you have a problem with D3 you should also have one with D2. Abhishek was going through a hot phase then so they didn’t advertise things this way but do you really think Hrithik would have objected if he’d been at the center of this sort of campaign?! He wouldn’t have and you wouldn’t have either!

The irony is hrithik ‘took’ the advantage in d2 and apex will claim it to be his talent or screen presence did it. Its obvious a fanatic can only see through this narrow view. We get it apex. Everything hrithik does is great and everything aamir does is deceitful or cheating. In addition abhishek is rubbish only till the point aamir does something against him. Then lets praise abhishek. There’s a difference between d2 & d3, Satyam in that sense!
    I’m suprised u didn’t note…

Hritik totally overshadowed abhishrek ONscreen but to be fair, most (forget abhishrek!) would have suffered at the hands of hritik there!

But there was NO perverse shady humiliation of abhishrek in the sense if being tagged with uday chopra
Not being invited to events as such!

Abhishrek was still billed as a hero and was presented such (though Hritiks obvious strengths there trumped him big time!)

    FINALLY—
The most shameful thing here is this ‘APOLOGY’ by aditya&/or aamir!!
Even this is NOT spontaneous or well intentioned!!

The insecure aamir and aditya have seen these numerous reports in media
That are growing by the day…
Whatever the impact maybe, they don’t want any negative impact from a certain subsection of bachchan fans or non-khan fans (which isn’t a huge number!) but can affect d3 numbers, since they are aiming to beat k3 as a minimum face saving number

I actually don’t mind if some oeople give big statements to Prop up their film (eg praising vfx etc or in JTHJ, hyping yashs last film!)

Ha Satyam–now u are being a ‘sore loser’
Admit and own up–it’s easy really..
be a man –don’t frantically fish for lifelines here lol

As for hritik -must admit-he Was guilty in participating in the
    EMASCULATION exercise in D2!
Though when it’s ash in the picture to be kissed (!) can’t blame him really !
He would be a non-man to refuse an ash-kiss!!!

The REAL culprit there was again aditya !!
Let’s not say ‘what’s the big deal!’

I will dissect why that emasculation was a big deal.

It wasn’t Europe or even America but conservative india!
We were not talkng about mallika sherawat
    Or a sunny leone
Or even a deepika padukone who is ever willing to ‘help out’ everyone from srk to saif to ranbir or ranveer to xyz on the road with (atleast) a kiss lol

    We were talking about ash
    Who had never truly ‘exposed’
Never really kissed on screen (properly)
Who had maintained a certain ‘dignity’ (unlike those like deepika)

And abhishrek was recently engaged or married or something like that !
And I guess even abhishrek had NOT kissed ash by then
(Since ash had been busy with salman and then Oberoi!)

Then suddenly she was forced to do this marathon kiss and bikini number
(& that too with cuckold abhishrek watching!!)

The FINAL clinching factor that must have KILLED abhishrek is
    That
How can we blame poor hritik
When even Ash visibly ENJOYED that kiss with hritik 🙂

Aamir os alright but he looks tired n old. As for abhishrek, wonder where does all this wit n timing go when he comes ONscreen?

But the important question is–WHAT is katrina wearing? Is it a slit nightie with something she could lay her hands on to cover up?
Or is it a reaction after the previous press conference (pic in the link below) wherein there were upskirt moments 🙂
    ——-

Actress Katrina Kaif, who has finally opened up to the media, made light of Kareena and Ranbir Kapoor’s conversation on Koffee with Karan, by saying whatever they said was a joke.

She said this during the press conference of Dhoom: 3, which is set to hit the screens on December 20.

Watch: Go Kamli with Katrina Kaif in Dhoom 3

Asked how she reacted to Kareena’s comment on Koffee with Karan where Kareena said she would dance to Katrina’s hit songs at Ranbir’s wedding, Katrina said: “Kareena and Ranbir are cousins so they pull each other’s legs. There is no such thing like that. They said it as a joke. I don’t think they were serious.”

She was then asked on which song would she perform at Ranbir’s wedding, to which Katrina said: “If for some reason, I have to dance on a song at Ranbir’s wedding, I would dance on the Besharam song.”

Reacting to Ranbir’s statement that Katrina is a special person in his life and he would like to give his life for her, she said: “I would like to give my life to anyone who needs and who is a dear friend. If Ranbir is ever in need, I will definitely be there for him.”

Additionally, the actress says she has no plans to get married for the next 20 to 30 years. She said, “It’s final and lock it. I am not getting married to anyone right now for the next 20 to 30 years.”

The perfectionist actor retorted saying, “Numbers have been getting fudged since forever. There is nothing new about it. But if one decides to manipulate figures they are fooling themselves. There is no merit in doing that.”

The actor continued saying, “The best yardstick to see how your film has fared is to check how many weekends has the film run. A film that is heavily performed will earn for multiple weekends. In my opinion it shows how consistently the film has earned.”

        • A couple of statements that make sense from Aamir with regards box office. The Krrish 3 box office reports is definitely one for the record books, the record books of how to fool your audience! the “tail” off in numbers is quite dramatic after 2 weeks and is convincing enough to suggest the numbers were fudged highly. No one will know the exact figures, whether it broke records or not. What is clear is Taran mentioned it broke records and then claimed D3 is only chasing Chennai Express in so many words. Also Chennai Express and YJHD “lasted” longer. Also sources out there other than producer suggesting a much lower total than 200 crores! The Roshans haven’t proved their numbers to be “right” but that’s hardly a position of guilt as no one does this anyway!
But Aamir’s comments make sense. A successful film will run, and even in today’s time will run for more than 2 weeks. The “social audit” is more or less “trending” and is a very apt way of describing it.

On D3, this is going to be historic. Some reports on advance booking already around and it’s going to be historic. This is the clearest indication, Friday is definitely D(h)oom’s day for some!

I suppose SRK’s non-stop talk is more entertaining. Yet, occasionally even SRK indulges in what is generally termed verbal diahorrea. He is funny, but he can go on talking in circles — and that can get boring after a point.

I have not seen Salman give memorable interviews. A few now and then, but then the guy is mostly action, in reel and real life.

    • Common sense has truly become uncommon these days. Aamir talks of such simple, sensible statements. But the fans who are clubs-obsessed, who is going to talk to them? It is better to walk away. I think the Roshans were pretty ok with K3 making it to the 100 cr club. But CE spoiled their party. Since CE is supposed to have touched 200 (with lesser variance from different ‘reliable’ sources), they HAD to cross it, by hook or crook. They fell prey to this club-entry, considered anything below 200 a ‘presitige’ issue and they went over-board stressing ON the numbers and motor-mouthing its ‘quality’, and ‘quantity.’

Agreed some people are waiting with bated breath for D3 to fail so that Aamir can be crucified for considering the Roshans to be ‘dubious!’

Agree with Qalandar – Aamir is refreshingly old-school and sometimes his talks sound simplistic – but they are really plain, simple truths which when uttered in these days, count as planned and Machiavellian.

  126. It’s been proven repeatedly that ‘trending’ is important but not without an ‘initial’…
In D3: the initial will be humungous due to the franchise, big star cast, aamir, katrina and so on, but aamir is not really the clincher in that.
‘Trending’ (as aamir has admitted many many times) after the first weekend is more dependent on the content/product and as aamir has said many times, in the brilliant three idiots was due to factors like hirani/abhijat joshi onwards.
Once in a while, a film comes up where a star circumvents borderline content into a big initial and even big trending.
Memento/southern remake ghajini was not one such instance nor was Gupte lifted Tzp (which wasn’t a big hit)
In recent years (past 5-6 years), aamir got a chance to show his star power in talaash–the result is there to see… 🙂

As for dhoom3: it’s uncanny that the likes of aamir have started chirping about k3 now (after Hritiks obvious problems) knowing he or RR won’t be bothering about clarifying about numbers at this stage.

Aamir should be thanking HR for gifting him a 350 crores plus film on a platter rather than this theorising about numbers. When he talks about trending, one should utter only one word –talaash 🙂

It’s ‘risky’ to tag with a big production house excel and use their marketing /production facilities rather than producing this ‘risky’ subject yourselves

It’s ‘risky’ casting another topnotch heroine rani (if one wasn’t enough) and make her play a crowd pleasing ‘domesticated’ (but relatively hot) housewife

It’s ‘risky’ to copy kahaanis style but changing /reshooting it later on when this got picked up and delaying three films in a row for that–talaash, dhoom3, peekay …

It’s ‘risky’ to go with Kareena into a hotel room and then chickening out at the last moment to avoid getting ‘exposed’ due to ‘underperformance!’ 🙂

Not necessarily saying it’s his very best but the one that I liked most. It was also the rare Bollywood film with a major actor that was truly sincere and wasn’t made for the numbers. Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter but with more interesting subjects a greater integrity is required. Most of the time Bollywood does ‘pretend’ different.

A good one year later than initially declared and god only knows the reasons for such a delay….. In the meantime Aamir has tried to keep Peekay as a back up lest things don’t work out here as planned! The gap would be suicidal

I still feel aamir is all wrong for this kind of movie and even the justification of a good script does not seal it unless movie has been made in a really interesting manner. I am sure Talaash for all its worth on paper could not project what it set out to do and that too with some reshoots etc requested by Aamir.

Archarya , the director is interesting and hope he has not made a slow boring torcher in the name of script I wish to be pleasantly surprised and I do want aamir to do well here.

Ideally Akki is the dashing hero for this kind of subject after Abraham and Hritik. Anupma Chopra’s interview was a bit on the mark when she questioned him why the movie is all angry and continuous frown on aamir’s face. Then Aamir – Katrina pairing too is so way off the mark.

In the past two movies of aamir with huge expectation did not do much and one of them Mela was a disaster but Fanaa did hold a bt of audience attention but nothing what the hype suggested. Rest aamir movies do well with surprise element esp RDB , Dil Chahta and Lagaan etc

Anything less than 350 crores domestic net should be v disappointing and infact shameful for aamir and the team.

I chose my words carefully by terming it as ‘shameful’ if it is less than 350 cr(wh)ores!

I’m not here to push angendae like some here. It’s a fact.

And what has aamir being doing all this while since ghajini /3I ??

And when the World Cup comes, u don’t expect him to have diarrhea!!!

Most Indian movies will wind up close to 250cr domestically at most -either front loaded or big tender. This is the market for hindi movies in current scenario. I doubt this is a current Sholay from any angle from the promos.

Hrithik in K3 made 175 crores or for the blind and impaired 230 crore…whatever it is the same assessment can be made.
D3 has to make 350 crore, that too just to avoid being called a disappointment. To be a success it needs to make 400 or 500 crore.

            Hmmmm….

          • yeah i just do not get where the 350cr number is coming from??? if it does 350cr..ill be VERY surprised…220cr-240cr is my expectation for D3.

          • If D3 just makes 220-240 it will have underperformed. Simply no two ways about it. Actually anything less than 300 is an underperformance in my book. 3I did 205 in 2009. CE just did as much or more (if you believe the higher numbers). Here we’re looking at a historic initial by a mile, if the film is liked just as much as D2 there’s no reason why it shouldn’t do 300 at the very least. If you take this sort of film and assume less than Ghajini-like trending let alone 3I-like you’ll get this. Of course films can always underperform but one must separate what is possible for a film versus what might happen if it doesn’t live upto expectations. And again my 300 number doesn’t assume some massively like film. Actually, and I’ve said this before, for D3 to match the D2 numbers in every sense it would have to do 350 or more. It ‘seems’ unreasonable till it happens. Also remember the reason many films don’t do this is because they’re poor works that are enough to draw an initial but are not really liked. It’s absurd to say that 185 or so is a great total for YJHD and then to set the bar for films like Krrish or Dhoom just a bit higher than this. Again remember before Ghajni happened no one thought those kinds of numbers were possible, to an extent this was true even for D2. And of course this was true for 3I. When you have something like ETT doing 140-150 in week 1 and then not even getting to 200 that’s not because this is some impossible barrier but for the reason that it just fizzled out after a huge initial. CE without Krrish or Dhoom kind of billing crossed 200. Decent trending but hardly spectacular in any sense.

All of this is about potential and what seems likely based on the trailers (for instance I found Krrish weak on this score). This doesn’t mean a film cannot underperform. Again less likely here given what we know about the film but anything’s possible. Even a good film can do this if it is ‘good’ in ways not entirely to the audience’s taste. I really don’t see that happening here. I mention only because those possibilities are always there even for the safest films. But yes less than 300 is an underperformer in my book. And given the initial it will generate for it to end up in your range it would basically be doing an ETT if not worse.

          • When Ghajini did 115, most other big movies were doing 80-90. 3 Idiots is an outlier (other big movies were still doing 80-90 crore or even less). If any movie which is liked like 3 Idiots , it would do 400 crore (because current big movies are doing 170-210 crore). I think like other big movies it could do 225 crore and that would be par for D3. If it does more than 250 it would be liked better than current lot. 300 would be good. Anything below 200 would be underperformance.

ps – If it does 250-275 then it would be like Ghajini.

            Like

          • when Ghajini opened to around 55 crores (not counting extended week) the initial for every other film hadn’t even exceeded 45 crores, actually it was in the low 40s in most cases, some of the numbers were cooked. When Ghajini did 115 D2 was the only film at 85. no other film had even crossed 70. Everyone had Krrish at 70. The difference between D2 and Ghajini was therefore very significant. Now in fairness Ghajini released two years after D2 but even in the interim no film had done as much with the exception of OSO which was initial pegged at 80-85 but later numbers were reduced even by BOI. Some had RMBDJ at 80. I think this was high too but in any case still way behind Ghajini both in terms of initial and final gross. When D2 released it did around 32-35 crores (again depending on who you believe) while the next highest initials (KANK, Krrish) were in the 26-28 range. So most big films weren’t doing 80-90 at all when Ghajini released. But leaving this aside consider the metrics of the franchise. D2 made roughly 2.5 times its initial. The first Dhoom did something similar. Even with no stars at that point and even using BOI numbers it was only slightly behind MHN the same year, it did as much As Dhawan’s MSK with Askhay and Salman. The point is this film has always done very well (I got into the Dhoom details sometime back but the idea that this was a small film that went to another level with D2 is something of a myth.. it was of course made bigger with the stars and so on but the first one already had very big numbers). And so if you assume an ETT start or better (I think the latter) you are looking at 150 crores minimally for week 1. Maybe more. Even going with a more conservative number a Ghajini-like graph would give it 300. Which would still be short of the trending patterns exhibited by the earlier two films. I do agree on the 3I number being worth 400 in today’s money. Even a Dhoom is unlikely to do this because popcorn genres ultimate don’t connect in deep enough ways for this to happen. They’re calling this the most emotional Dhoom yet but still it would take a remarkably strong script and/or moments for that to be possible. But my claim has for very long been the opposite one whether it was 100 crores or 200. I think a lot more films should have been able to hit these thresholds without most of it being the initial. In other words a lot more 75 crore week 1 numbers should have led to 150 crores, so and so forth. But no one’s making anything more than half-decent these days. Most of the time worse than this. So if you make a film only for the initial, if you refuse to work on the script et al the stars, the music or whatever will give you that initial but not surprisingly nothing more. One can’t then say the numbers these films reach are a limit because the films in question are just poor. With Dhoom I expect a vastly better film. But I think ETT could easily have done 250 (it would still have done far less than Ghajini trending). Ultimately without substance no film in any genre can truly set extraordinary benchmarks. Now obviously some genres work better than others in any given age but without good writing there’s no film that can last for very long. LRM had amazing trending. Went to 70 from a week 1 of 21 or so. We know what happened with 3I. Other examples could be offered on a lesser scale but the point is that there is a correlation between quality and final gross. And with quality I just mean a film that the audience can truly be invested in and not just ‘enjoy’.

  134. Some wild, arbitrary and inflammatory comments from usual suspects above.
For most people who have their head screwed on right, I think 200 would be a kind of minimum here. I would consider it a non-success if it falls short of 200 crores. Trending would also be important in terms of how it gets to 200 in terms of deciding if it is a well liked film or not.
With a huge opening 200 may not be that difficult but if it trends poorly, would consider it just one more of those front loaded biggies which are profitable but not really well liked.
I am hopeful it will do considerably more but as of now the product is the unknown here.

  138. “Uday & I Are Dhoom” : Abhishek Bachchan
    December 16, 2013

For Abhishek Bachchan as well as Katrina Kaif, Dhoom 3 is their first release in 2013.
“It’s not as if I planned it that way. After Bol Bachchan in May 2012 my career panned out in such a way that there was no release until now. Dhoom 3 kept getting repeatedly delayed for whatever reasons. And unfortunately for my fans and for Katrina’s fans, there was no release in 2013. It wasn’t planned that way. And I didn’t miss myself on screen. I see myself every day in the mirror.”
Abhishek says he felt no career pangs about being away for a longish time. “By the grace of God, I am not an insecure actor at all. And if you see the career-graph of others no major actor does more than a couple of films per year.Aamir, for that matter, has not been in a film since Talaash a year back. So…no! I don’t feel insecure about not being on screen for some time.”
Abhishek Bachchan has been a constant in the Dhoom franchise’s journey from the time it took off in 2004.
Says Abhishek with a spot of vanity, “Pardon the immodesty, but Uday Chopra and I ARE Dhoom. The franchise chronicles the ongoing adventures of Jai and Ali, that’s me and Uday. That’s the format of the franchise. The other characters may come and go. But we go on forever.Like Batman & Robin. Can there be a Batman franchise without Batman?”
Having said that, Abhishek looks back with much affection at the journey. “From Dhoom to Dhoom 2 and now to Dhoom 3 it has been an amazing journey. To begin with it was the story of the adventures of these 3 boys, me, Uday and John Abraham. Our producer Aditya Chopra suggested we try to re-define the action genre in our cinema. We were all young hopeful and enthusiastic , eager to try out this experiment. How were we to know it would turn out the way it did?!”
Now Abhishek feels the Dhoom franchise is watched for being what it it is. “Yes, there are stars in the film.Dhoom 2 had Hrithik and Aishwarya(and if I may say so, my wife was wonderful in the film). And now Dhoom 3 has Aamir and Katrina. But I think the brand Dhoom is a much larger than starcast.”
Abhishek feels the presence of a new director in the franchise brings all-new challenges to the table. “The other two Dhoom films were not directed by Victor(Vijay Krishna Acharya). So there is a new feel and flavour to the franchise that Uday and I could identify and feel since we are carryovers from the earlier life of the franchise. Victor had a different vision. Fans of the Dhoom series would be surprised by the changes in the franchise. Earlier the focus was on making a fun film. This is an edgier and darker Dhoom than the first two”
Abhishek has no leading lady in Dhoom 3. But he does have Aamir Khan.Abhishek can’t stop raving about his formidable co-star. “I must have been 11 when Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak came out. It changed the way we look at love stories. The nation went crazy. We’ve loved and admired him for the kind of cinema he works in. Working with him was great learning experience.”
Abhishek has lots of action scenes in the film. “Dhoom 3 was physically demanding. But I enjoyed all the action. It was like giving fancy toys to a boy to play with. I got to ride around in motorbikes and to ride these sleek motor-boats through these narrow canals in Chicago.”
As for trade voices already predicting a 200-crore run for Dhoom 3 Abhishek opines nonchalantly, “These are expectations from within the industry. The audience doesn’t care about how much money a film makes. Do you know the collections of your all-time favourite film Amar Prem? Audiences go to a film. They like or dislike it. That’s it.”

  139. Have you seen the other films of the Dhoom franchise?
I haven’t seen Dhoom 2. I had seen Dhoom at home with Kiran on television. I found that movie very exciting and lots of fun. I sat till the end. In fact, I loved the music too. I used to dance on my bed whenever I heard the theme soundtrack of the film. Kiran was shocked to see me like this. Unfortunately, I missed the second one. –

Describe Sahir as the villain of Dhoom 3
Sahir is not Amrish Puri kind of negative. He is not actually killing people. It’s not like my role in Fanaa where I am responsible for many people losing their lives. He is the guy who has a past and has gone through an emotional trauma. The script is such that you as an audience and your emotions are with him. He is a character, we are hoping, will win your sympathy.

        • Yeah it is a bit weird. Some of his recent interviews have suggested that when it comes to offering constructive criticism to his cinema and contemporaries, there’s more or less an even split between his candor and his reserve. Think by and large he speaks his mind but also pulls his punches on certain questions, or perhaps is simply being a diplomat. But yeah it’s hard to shake the sense that he simply doesn’t want to field the followup question should he admit he’s seen D2!

          Like

          • that’s probably right because he also goes out of his way to say he really enjoyed the first one. Why wouldn’t you check out the sequel if you liked the initial one so much?! Specially since you’ve had seven years to do so!

            Like

      • Since Aamir is saying that his character is going to win sympathy of audience, that more or less rules out anyone else having a prominent role. Even the faceoffs will have the audience rooting for the ‘bad’ guy. Looks like this will be on the same lines as D2. Yes there will be a greater emotional story but all that will not translate to the other getting a proper character arc. Looks like only Katrina and AK will have bulk of the character development here…

  140. FANS–real v/s pseudo/simulated vol 4–aamir khan

Now @ the eve of the big success called dhoom3, we see lots of aamir fans here n elsewhere
But what’s interesting is it to tease out the ‘pseudo’ form the ‘real’

    Scenario 1
I had put forward the 350 crores minimum target for d3-which is perfectly reasonable give the franchise, stars, genre, production house etc etc

And the REAL aamir fan will agree to that
–as he/she did when he/she admitted that talaash had underperformed big time (& wasn’t aiming to make 70-80 crores!)
The REAL fan agrees that 300 crores should be made around /before the second weekend
ANYTHING less than that, is disappointing

Bcos he/she BELIEVES in their ‘icon’ (whether right or wrong is immaterial!)

    The FAKE/strategic fan
Is the FIRST to get INSECURE/FIDGETY to hear these genuine targets facing D3–why?
Bcos in the heart of their hearts, they themselves don’t have faith in aamir and his stardom /ability
His ‘fandom’ is just a public front due to issues like
    Abandonment
Being ‘orphaned’ eg bachchan ex-fans trying to regain ‘lost glory’ etc

I’m NOT Aamirs fan as such
But knowing the Setting, franchise, genre, production and Aamirs own script sense & judgment, I feel these numbers 350 crores plus are surely ON…

IF AAMIR KHAN IS WHAT HE IS PEDALLED TO BE ALL THIS–

    Time to prove it !!

I feel it is more likely to be achieved than not –wait n watch …

  147. As Dhoom 3 readies to make its stylised entry at the box office on Friday, it seems that it will not just impact audiences visually but financially as well.

As the film’s release draws closer, the IMAX screens have set their prices at Rs. 400-600 for the morning shows and Rs. 700-900 for
the night shows, according to their official website.

If that is not enough, the film is expected to make waves in Pakistan too.

For a family of five, watching Dhoom 3 could thus mean an expenditure of Rs. 4,500, sans any coke and popcorn!

The prices might seem extravagant and uneconomical for a middle class family but advance booking status on the website shows that the seats are filling up fast and have even been sold out at places.

This might be the status for IMAX screens but others are keeping the ticket price affordable. The cost of tickets in multiplexes ranges between Rs.300-Rs.400.

The prices in New Delhi seem to be lesser than those in Mumbai and range between Rs. 200-Rs.250, with the exception of a few theatres where the prices have gone upto Rs. 500.

Smaller cities like Chandigarh and Jaipur fall in the average price range of Rs. 150-Rs 400. However, there are also places like the Gaiety Galaxy theatre in Bandra where you can enjoy Aamir Khan’s grey character in the action thriller at reasonable rates.

“All the theatres might have been taking advantage of the release of Dhoom 3, but we at Gaiety Galaxy have made it a point to not increase the rate. Our ticket prices remain consistent at Rs. 70-Rs 90,” said Manoj Desai of Gaiety Galaxy. Desai added that the weekend is already pre-booked and he is expecting an identical pattern in the following week as well.

Produced under the Yash Raj Films banner and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film boasts of a starry cast with Aamir in a new avatar – he will be seen as a gymnast.

Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles of Jai Dixit and Ali from the last two Dhoom movies and Katrina Kaif will enhances the glamour quotient as the female lead in the movie, which will be Bollywood’s first film to be released in the IMAX format, a specialised film format.

The 2D film is already being appreciated for the stunts featured in the trailer and especially the bike scenes featuring Aamir.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra predicts that the film will surpass the collections of previous blockbusters. “Reality check.. Mark my words…Dhoom 3 will cross Rs. 100 crore in the first three days and it will also cross Rs. 200 crore in the first seven days,” Mehra said in post on Twitter on Wednesday.

Raising the bar of pre-release promotions, the makers have also come up with innovative advertisements with tag lines reading – “It’s Dhoom day…Are you bunking college today”.
