Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser landed in Mumbai on Monday to shoot for Rohit Batra’s American film in which he takes on the role of an under-the-radar arms dealer based in Delhi.

Brendan Fraser who played Rick O’Connell in The Mummy trilogy and is equally well-known for comedies and fantasies like Encino Man, George of the Jungle, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Inkheart, as also dramas like The Quiet American and Crash, landed in Mumbai yesterday for an eight-day shoot of Rohit Batra’s American film, The Field. He will start from June 17 and they will be filming around the city. The American-Canadian actor who loves India but is here this time to work, will be in the Maximum City for around 12-13 days before he flies back to the US.

The film is a cops-and-robbers story featuring actors from around the world. Brendan reportedly plays an under-theradar arms dealer settled in Delhi and The Field is the name of the undercover operation.

According to a source, the actor liked the script immediately which is dark, with thrill elements, and is a good balance of drama and comedy. Even though it is a character role it has all the attributes of a leading role, with plenty of scope for histrionics and a depth to the character. “India is very special and he wanted to be a part of a good project. The Field was right up his street,” adds the source.

The film is very Indian in its story which is about family and obligations but the way it has been structured and will be presented is very Hollywood. It also features Ronit Roy, Neeraj Kabi and Prem Chopra and while some of the characters speak in Hindi, Brendan will be required to speak only in English.

  5. All the very best to Rohit and Rajen. Wasn’t aware that this was in the works. Had the privilege of being a part of Rohit’s first film that he shot in India. Glad that he’s returned for a second outing, and with a noticeably bigger cast and production.

And Anna, how the sudden jump to becoming a producer? Always harboured a interest?

  6. This was supposed to be done in 2014 but its been in works for long and then Ray Liattoa looks out and comes Brendan Frazer. Both are same type actors and actually Frazer is a bigger (in comparision) star, so finally good with the final cast.

Besides him, the Indian cast is very good as well. Ronit Roy(got Nationals in Udaan), Neeraj Kabi(Ship of Thesus , Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! & Talvar) , Vineet Singh(Gangs of Wasseypur – 1st son of Bajpayee aka Sonny Corleone) and actress Radhika Apte(many movies but loved in Badlapur).

Alll the best to Rohit and Rajen!!

Seriously, this movie needs a name change. Its like you won’t remember the name even 2nd day after hearing it. We need something catchy especially with this small budgeted movies.

  9. Rajen: name the movie something like The Desi Mob. It is intriguing and I feel like seeing it already. The current title is tacky.

Ray Liotta was earlier attached to play the role when the project was first announced in 2014, but the director said script changes led to Fraser’s casting. “The more the script evolved, the more obvious it became Brendan was the best choice for the idiosyncratic role of Charu,” said Batra. “For a director to explore this journey with him in a place like India is nothing less than a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The Field is produced by Guy J. Louthan, whose credits include 2013’s Halle Berry-starrer The Call. Brillstein Entertainment Partners’ Jai Khanna is among the executive producers along with Adam Rosen. The film will feature dialogue in Hindi and English.

Fraser is already in India for the shoot, which begins on Friday at locations in Mumbai and Delhi. Batra is repped by Brillstein, while Fraser is repped by CAA.

  16. Saw the movie Line of Descent , it is on Prime.
It has such an impresive cast- Prem Chopra, Abhay Deol Ronit Roy, Neeraj Kabi and Brendan Fraser.
Very boring and confusing movie. Ronit Roy was totally wasted in the movie, I think his role was cut at the editing table. Neeraj had a bigger role and he overacted as if there is no tomorrow. Prem chopra was really good. Brenden was loud and obnoxious . Abhay deol was good as well.
Overall watched it till the end only for Rohit Karan Batra !!!!

    • TBH, since the movie was based in Delhi, there was really no need of Brenden’s Character. The editing was very erratic.
Hope Rohit’s next is a good one and is a hit.

      • Saw it some six months back on Sling; Some comments to Rajen who is one of the co producers:

Uneven film. Tried to be Anurag Kashyap kind of movie but if you haven’t lived in India , dialogues sound incongruous. There was no need of Brendan Fraser.
It could have been a dark crime drama but running time was small , so in starting, scenes were small and they cut to next scene abruptly.
And You have prem Chopra bas elderly patriarch who is in masala mode dialogue delivery. You have French , some what Russian sounding Brendan Fraser and Hindi cuss word spouting characters.. there was too many .. in front of kids, ladies..
