With ‘hindostan’ it seems like a period set up.Is this the movie Aditya Chopra was planning with SRK which would need preparation to play a warrior and had told him to block his date diary in 2017 ?

If Salman gets his usual Eid release suddenly 3 dates for 2018 are blocked….so let’s speculate for 2019 now….lol

May be it is done on purpose to keep Diwali clear as Devgn is pretty aggressive in booking Diwali and will not shy away from naming his own Son of Sardar for 2018 and willing to take panga with SRK.

At the moment only Salman and to an extent Aamir now ably aided by Bachchan combo hype may be a no go area.

Btw, I am pretty sure this Tiger 2 is all a hoax and Salman is not going to oblige yrf anymore. The end part of Sultan was not very smooth and Salman clearly looked very unhappy & yrf is trying their best to do all these media stories.

I feel Salman should do a quick fix Dabangg 3 for Christmas 2017 as that project has been ready and pending salman’s approval.

  5. 19th Century India was largely feudal; much of it was under the boot of British imperialism. Terror in the contryside was rampant. Ameer Ali, was one of the most notorious of the Indian Thugs, who were equivalent to a guild of pirate bands on land complete with passwords by which one group recognized another. They captured and killed travelers for booty. They spread terror for centuries before being wiped out by persistent and classical police methods over the course of a decade.

The anti-hero protagonist of Confessions of a Thug is Ameer Ali (based upon Syeed Amir Ali, a prolific Thug who turned King’s evidence). As a small child his parents are murdered by Thugs, but one, Ismail, chooses to spare him and raise him as his son. After Ameer forgets his parents and learns his stepfather’s vocation, he is initiated into the cult. The ensuing narrative reads much like a conventional adventure story of a boy heading off to sea, or running away with a band of gypsies, except for the stark fact that the protagonist is repeatedly committing acts of cold-blooded murder.

His victims are sometimes villains in their own right, but they are just as often hapless merchants, as well as the women and children who accompany them.

Either way, it makes most sense for Amitabh to be in a “thug” role and Aamir to be in a cop role (assuming that is indeed the story).

Now that will make the movie a bit interesting and hope that is the case. Somehow Aamir and Bachchan in same frame do not gel. There are numerous pics of them together on the net and not even one seems graceful and the stature looks all too funny visually.

On that front, I would at least commend SRK for being able to stand up to Bachchan stature in Mohabbatein / K3g and Veer Zara but then that was his peak and he was not a self indulging megalomaniac and overacting ki dukaan.

LOL, you’re probably the only one you thinks so. Or let me correct that there are possibly some SRK diehards who imagine this. If one doesn’t think Bachchan is taking SRK to school in Mohabbatein or both him and hrithik in K3G in the most obvious physical ways let alone in performance terms one really needs eyes!

But call it tweak in the script or those movies his favorite hunting ground or even closeness to kjo/yrf, the guy ended getting all the accolades coming out and his stardom unscathed by Bachchan and Hrithik too was a big shot back then.

Mohabbatein relaunched Bachchan in terms of the look et al and if anything most people found SRK a bit too understated here. In any case I never said he was damaged as a star. On Hrithik I actually vastly prefer SRK to Hrithik in K3G. But I personally (!) don’t think that’s just my personal opinion on Bachchan in those films. Forget the father, people even preferred the son (over SRK) in KANK!

      • Mehra is great but I think this film requires a more masala somewhat less ‘auteurist’ treatment. Shaad Ali would have struck the balance. Actually an in-form Santoshi would be great too. He has worked with both actors and Khakee shows that with the right script he can always do great things (in fact this film is possibly the best marriage of a certain masala-thriller format and the auteurism of its maker than just about any film I can think of in the post-Ghulami universe, i.e. in Hindi). But this is where a lot of ‘Bollywood’ and its fans go wrong. The aesthetics of a subject have to match the ‘message’. If you try and shoot a Desai film like Mehra you lose the entire film. This doesn’t mean that some of the masala films of the 70s could not have been better shot. Certainly Ramesh Sippy shows how it is possible to do both (but Sholay like so much else seems a one-off in this sense). However if one has to choose one should respect the ‘mass aesthetic’ of those films. And the same with other subjects. The visual choices aren’t something tacked on to a subject but part of the ‘message’ if you will. The way DCH was shot was perfect for that subject and its coming of age themes and so on. On the the other hand Hirani has a much less showy, much more ‘solid’ (in a traditional sense) approach which is perfect for his kind of filmmaking. Again you can’t shoot Munnabhai like RGV! And so for all these reasons a Shaad Ali who did BnB would have been good in my view though of course there could be other choices. Ketan Mehta too handled things well in MP, was in fact better with the masala and/or dramatic registers than I would have thought given his background.

Because they’re just really looking to create the biggest bang as opposed to doing full justice to the script. Hopefully Aamir can fix some of this but you can’t change the essential nature/aim of a production house. Now if Aamir had produced this and done a Lagaan on it it would have been something truly special.

Amitabh’s character was a protagonist as per screenplay and he did outstanding job and rose highly behind the script, scope of his role but still Anand = Rajesh Khanna. He won the awards, acclaims and added to his rising stardom. No debates exists IMO.

  10. Graceless?

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan are not playing husband and wife. Mind you, Amitabh playing husband to his short wife in some films. Did they look graceless?

Aamir acted with Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan who are many inches taller than him. But they did not look graceless in one frame.

The director did a good job with Dhoom 3. Both emotional scenes as well as making twins dissimilar in their body language and the way they behaved. The cop did not waste time after girls. He meant business.

  11. I agree ‘graceless’ is a poor choice of word. It is more like they don’t ‘complement each other’. But all this depends on how the roles are written and whether script justifies their presence. Personally I am not enthused by the plotline and if by chance movie is is on the lines of pirates of the caribbean ( esp gear & getup ), then god save us. Aamir is a limited actor though adequate when underplaying. Anything loud and ott , he becomes unbearable. His forte is playing the ‘smart alec’ but this being a period drama, i don’t see that scope here. Btw Bachchan too has forgotten to do the loud properly and jackie dada is well known for hamming….so god help us from this trimurti if movie is not written well.

Btw Devgn is gearing up for his own period literature too –

IMO, its exactly the opposite, Aamir Khan was and is at his natural best in OTT desi roles, one that channels Dilip Kumar in some ways. Dil, AAA, Raja Hindusthani, Rangeela, Ishq, Ghulam, Mann, DCH, Fanaa are some of the example (again their is variation in these roles even though they all are “loud and OTT characters”). Some of the ads too can be included. His comic timing is impeccable. People (masses) easily connect to these roles but he has done very few films of those kind if we look at his entire career. He has stayed away from repeating them frequently. Would love if he is in similar mode in Thug.

  12. All those movies listed above fall under the ‘smart alec’ role except Fanaa which too had him playing smarty pants with Chand Sifarish et al in the first half and that is where the movie was working. Unfortunately later half shows the conflict of a father with terrorist bend and that is where his portrayal fell flat and came across very forced and movie went downhill and turned into an avg fare.

  14. Amir a limited actor? In fact just the oppposite. He has a really wide range of performance arsenal. Look at the roles he has played with shining success : fron school student and college students to a villager, a taxi driver, a tapori, a police offcer, a terrorist, an avenging killer and an alien. And some he has underplayed, some he has gone OTT, depending on the vision of the film.

  15. And the majority of those listed roles, he essentially takes the mr smarty pants route and tonal language is very similar one way or the other. Only Ghajini which was beautifully underplayed in first half and then the transformation for retribution was a stand out performance. But here too Suriya had already laid out the blueprint for the character. So there were well established do’s and don’ts.

Myselfaamir there was no need to bring salman to the discussion but since someone above talked about AAA this can be put across as a good case study for Aamir. Santoshi in trying to do an Archie comics to Indian audience had worked out a perfect script and cast, however Jughead, Veronica , Betty all fell in place and performed exceptionally well except for the Archie enactment was very parodic / caricaturish and Aamir theatricalize the whole character to be accepted by general audience resulting in movie failing to take off. There is a very thin line between over play & hamming and may be Aamir being under pressure and trying to outsmart Salman got carried away. Salman was on a high and the bigger star there after MPK and string of hits to his name and Aamir had drastically fallen behind with Awwal Number,Tum mere ho and Love , Love kind of trash falling like ninepins one after the other.

Please go back and learn the history of Andaz Apna Apna before making inane comments. The biggest reason the movie didn’t take off was because it took freakin 3 years to make. Raveena and Karisman had a fallout. Salman had a minor accident which also delayed it. As for Salman was on a high, MPk came in 1999 and AAA was released in 1994 (right before HAHK I believe). I don’t need to remind you of Salman movies between MPK and HAHK but you can look it up yourself. As for Aamir, he had Dil in 1990, DHKMN in 1991, JJWS in 1992, and HAHRPK in 1993….all of these movies from moderate to big success. He also had some disasters like Awwal Number, Daulat ki Jang and a few others but it’s not like he was the next Rahul Roy!

At the very least i expected from a Salman ‘fanatic’ to ”STOP GIVING LECTURES ON ACTING” but that proved to be a ‘Utopian dream’!
Second, Aamir did those movies right after QSQT and they began releasing between 90 to 91 and flopping one after the other. But after 91, he did do 2 or 3 movies at max and as thecooldude pointed out Dil in 90 was the biggest grosser and DHKMN,JJWS,HHRPK came before AAA, which were successes all along refutes your bogus agenda as Salman also had string of flops before the release of AAA! Below is the list of Salman’s ‘MASSIVE HITS’ before AAA to make Aamir insecure to the extent to force him to deliver ‘OTT & HAMMING’ masterclass in AAA, where Salman ‘the thespian’ taught Aamir’s how to act’!!

      1993- Jaagruti
      1993 Chandra Mukhi

    • The fact is that neither Aamir nor Salman were riding high at the time AAA came. If they were as strong as today, their mere presence would have ensured a blockbuster. Comedies were not doing great as a genre as well.

Salman had 6 consecutive, successful movies from MPK to PKP. Love was his first set-back. He was on a string of flops when AAA released. Aamir was inconsistent. Had 4 big hits (QSQT, Dil, DHKMN, HHRPK) and share of big flops as well.

It is also said that Aamir wisely accepted to play in a cameo (song) for Santoshi in Damini and did not charge money for it. Ensured he was on good terms with Santoshi.

I think Aamir had a slightly meatier role but Salman had moments that bailed him out. Overall, it is known that they didn’t share a great working relationship. Aamir did not like Salman’s indiscipline.

Raveena and Karishma were having a war of their own. It is also said that Salman and Karishma (they shared good friendship) used to gang up against Raveena.

Santoshi’s film was 6 hours long. So, there was a lot of trimming to do for his final cut.The film was declared a flop at the time of its release.

  17. Clueless Hrithik Roshan dropped from Thugs of Hindostan

The actor wasn’t informed about Aamir Khan replacing him in the YRF film.

Hrithik Roshan was in for a surprise when he came to know that he wasn’t doing Aditya Chopra’s Thugs of Hindostan. The actor apparently wasn’t formally informed about his ouster from the project or about Aamir being roped in as his replacement.

According to a well-placed source in Yash Raj films, here’s how things transpired. “The entire project was planned with Hrithik,” he informs us. “Hrithik and Aditya met over many sittings, discussing the film and Adi clearly told him that the film wouldn’t be made without him.” The script however, as it was shaping up, played villain.

Adds the source, “Hrithik was not happy with the script. Some of the characters he thought were underdeveloped. In fact, the role of the leading lady he believed, was so sketchy that no major actress was willing to do the role. He suggested to Adi that they rework the script for some more time, as it didn’t justify the film’s Rs 160-crore budget. Adi agreed and told him that the script will be further developed before contacting him again. Hrithik told Adi to take his time and that it didn’t matter if it took two months or a year. That he would do the film whenever the script was ready.”

Meanwhile, director Victor Acharya met Aamir. The two had previously worked in Dhoom 3. “Victor narrated the subject to Aamir, and he loved it as it was — without any changes. So Victor grabbed the chance to work with Aamir again.”

Anand was nowhere his downfall. His 1st major hit with Shakti Samatan in ’69 – Aradhana and then the same team coming in early ’71 with Kati Patang. He had numerous hits in between them as well and Anand released just 2 months after Kati Patang in ’71. There was no downfall trend yet. Right after Anand, he gave Haathi Mere Saathi, a huge blockbuster and the biggest hit of that year!

            Like

          • I am not saying his downfall per se with Anand began. I am talking about the beginning of ‘competition space’ with Amitabh; of seeing someone who could take-over the super-star status later..

            Like

          • During the making of Anand there was a stir between rajesh khanna and amitabh but no way rajesh khanna was threatened by amitabh take-over.Yes Namak Haram was the film that amitabh over-shadowed rajesh khanna.

Although Amitabh had a huge influence after this film, what really helped after namak haram was self-confidence of Zanzeer becoming the huge boxoffice blockbuster.

rajesh khanna downfall began 1974 and declined where as amitabh stardom begun to climb towards superstar status.

Khanna could not cope with his superstardom. Later he admitted that he had not been mature enough to handle it; success made him arrogant, forcing producers and directors to give in to every whim and fancy, and when they saw a similar spark in Bachchan many shifted loyalties.

Convinced he could do no wrong, Khanna made bad choices, taking roles that exposed his limitations; his mannerisms became an embarrassment and without strong stories not even he could salvage poor films. He became a parody of the former superstar and audiences laughed at his attempts to pull off action roles, with which he was never comfortable, and at his maudlin sentimentalism.

Biggest mistake by rajesh khanna was to reject ” zanzeer ” , later yash chopra also got convinced by salim-javed to take amitabh for deewar because the orignal choice was rajesh khanna.

    • This is interesting discussion and very important as well. Each one is correct in their perspective and in today’s context Amitabh role and presence in Anand was nothing special … so why it was made such a bug deal back in 1971 that even Rajesh felt insecure first time ever from his co-star ?

Actually this is more about Bachchan impact when someone introduced to him first time ever. Let me give two weird examples in close context , when bade miyan chote miyan released, me as a bachchan fan since very long , can clearly see him getting old, little tired and not in his best form. But my cousins who were age 7 and 9 respectively saw him act first time, both carried different opinion than me. They were in awe of Amitabh and though he did better job than the younger one Govinda. Fun fact here is, after a year or two, Bachchan started playing old characters and kep beard and both my cousins surprised that how can Amitabh became so old within a year ??

Second example is, when I show Veer Zaara to two different American friends and first feedback which I received is “Who was that old dude uncle of Veer ? He was so energetic and magnificent, we missed his presence when veer left village” .. and believe me I didn’t show them Veer Zaara to showcase Amitabh .. this feedback was a surprising and enlightening to know bachchan impact on strangers.

Now coming to Anand, when movie released in 1971, Rajesh was at his peak and Amitabh was just trying to felt his presence in Bollywood. Audience didn’t knew him and no one could imagine if anyone can grab attention within same frame of Rajesh Khanna, first time audience heard that voice and experience the performance which was not that big in length, but snatched some great attention which was very big deal if it is Rajesh Khanna movie.

Now after seeing Amitabh since four and half decades and hundreds of performances, if someone go back and watch Anand for first time, Amitabh was no big deal there. But little did one realize how much it was a big impact if Anand was your first bachchan movie, or for that matter any movie as first bachchan experience would give you good high, now matter how bad is product.

PS : Sanjog was my first bachchan movie (on doordarshan) and I became instant fan as a kid.

MATCHSTICK MEN and THUGS OF HINDOSTAN hardly can be considered on the same thematic level.

In any case, BLUFFMASTER was heavily inspired by MATCHSTICK MEN and I really doubt they will want to make another MATCHSTICK MEN when BLUFFMASTER already nailed it.

I have always found it insulting to an artist when they perform and those that sit and watch, to not be paying attention to them, to show respect .. nah ! no respect …

The craft of music desires a silence … a concentration of mind and heart .. one so that the principle can be maintained of some basic ethics and manners when events of the sort take place .. if ever I were to be professionally equipped with the art of music, and it were to happen to me, I would walk away, than be dissuaded, by bunch of people ..

Music is not mechanical – at least not for me – it has a soul and when you insult it you insult your own soul .. that is pathetic and undesired ..

And those that perform at public podiums .. perhaps look even more seriously at the mark of heightened ridiculousness, when such occurrences materialise…

But there is adulation too, from genuine music lovers or .. players .. to keep it survived in places where it was not earlier ..

  20. ** Ramu has a golden chance here to redeem himself like he did to an extent with RC double. I just hope he stops with his penchant for ear-blasting BG and shoving cameras up people’s arses or the lavatory pipe-lines or the car’s steering wheel..**

    Images look good here…
    —————————————————————-

In the solitude of the filtered lights of smoke endeared environs, lives this strange character SARKAR .. shifted from his previous home and accommodating his sparse clothing sense and habits, to another larger and perhaps more sophisticated roof .. there is much to contemplate about, and there is much to look forward to ..

I saw the first scene of ‘SARKAR 3′ edited by the RGV of Ram Gopal Varma .. and shared it with some … a stunned silence preceded the gushing praise that followed … from common house wives to seasoned head of work departments .. if this is the first scene they said wonder what will happen after this and how will the strength of the first scene remain in such prominence compared to what shall follow later ..

I think that with RGV having a lot of time to think, and not rushing through like a factory in motion, this one will be more audience friendly .( The sudden removal of Abhishek in SR was a dumb move box office wise)

          • yes and that’s what ruined the franchise. Because if he was going to make that sort of film he shouldn’t have built it up like that. Now in one sense the narrative shock of that move worked but to justify it the franchise needed to be much more serious than it is. Similarly in the Godfather trilogy the third film and despite the loss of the daughter at the end (which was supposed to constitute a morality lesson of sorts) doesn’t really add to the world of the original films in any meaningful way. Getting back to SR even if RGV wanted to kill Abhishek’s character (which incidentally I think is one of his very impressive performances, i.e. SR not the first one) he should have taken us further into his world. So this character becomes a heart of darkness Marlowe kind of figure in some ways in the second film and then he also has more human moments otherwise. But then his death should have been framed a different way. The gesture seems near romantic in some ways which then argues against the logic of that character’s development. So the second film is much more interesting if also more muddled. With the third one he can certainly fashion an engaging narrative but that’s beside the point. Of course I should repeat here that I’ve never been a fan of the Sarkar Bachchan (Sr). This kind of authoritarian persona has never done it for me when it comes to him. I also see it as a total misreading of his history but that’s another debate.

    • yeah saw this.. unfortunately when philosophers get into politics the results are quite often dangerous and there’s a long history to such decisions. Of course his position is a bit complicated here but nonetheless there’s no excuse for even considering such an option.

  22. Aamir Khan and Aditya Chopra at loggerheads, courtesy Alia Bhatt and Vaani Kapoor.

Alia Bhatt and Vaani Kapoor have caused a rift between Aamir Khan and Aditya Chopra – find out how.

As reported by Filmfare, Aamir is impressed by Miss Bhatt and is keen on having her in Thugs of Hindostan. Their source has revealed that the 51 year old actor has recommended her name for the project. But it’s not gonna be easy for Bhatt to become a part of the film as Aditya Chopra is still persistent on having Vaani in the film. The film is supposedly going to be quite an expensive film, as our sources have confirmed the same. We can already see how Adi is mighty happy with his YRF girl, Vaani. They’ve worked together in Befikre and that itself explains why Chopra wants her in this big budget film. But knowing that Aamir is one stubborn actor, will he be able to convince Chopra to bring Alia onboard for this project?

Already we’re seeing how Alia is extending her arms to reaching newer heights in her career graph. Alia Bhatt has created a brand of her own as she doesn’t need to bank on any actor’s name to sell a film. Just as her Dear Zindagi co-star Shah Rukh Khan said, “She is too good too soon.” We too agree with that statement. So without a doubt opportunities would flood by her doorstep, right? In fact, if the 23 year old actress bags this film, it would be too good to be true. Already Thugs of Hindostan has two powerful actors such as Aamir and Amitabh. With inclusion of Alia in this project, the actress can strike off Shah Rukh and Aamir’s name from the list of the three big Khans in terms of work! (ALSO READ: Alia Bhatt on being too good too soon according to Shah Rukh Khan: I need to be BAD now – watch video)

The plotline of Thugs of Hindostan is quite intriguing as it is in similar lines with Pirates of the Caribbean. Although reports of the script undergoing change and matching to Matchstick Men also cropped up but no confirmation has been given on the same. For all we know, the film is about pirates and their adventurous voyage. Yes, the plot is super interesting and with Mr Perfectionist sailing in this project, could it be more exciting? But we’d definitely like to know who finally bags the coveted role to romance Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt or Vaani Kapoor.
