Been really busy after watching. Will jot down few comments . Simply put – Aamir rocks and movie sucks! The movie should have been named ‘Adventures of Firangi Mallah’ with few twist to the current story. Few portions are very well directed but the 2 biggest flaws of the movie are no emotional depth, connectivity and TOO loud background music ruining everything. Even though Aamir is the only good part of the movie(baring him in Suraiyya song which was unwatchable), his presence actually ruined the script. It became too much about Aamir and less about the story it was supposed to tell. Aamir’s character just overshadows the script and that is never a good thing. Like, Prabhas was not number 1 star prior to Baahubali but SS Rajamouli still took him and made the most expensive budgeted movie without worrying about the returns. You can’t take megastar like Chiranjeevi and try to make Baahubali, he’ll simply overshadow the script. So, basically Aamir’s character is great but simply in the wrong movie. There are way too many flaws which I think everyone already pointed but I would like add that editing is not bad at all. I don’t think you would want an epic movie to be around 2 hours, there is not many useless scenes especially on script or paper. The execution was the culprit with no attachment. Apart from Aamir.. no other actor was even given a well defined character. I mean you don’t need to go back in 70’s to get basics right.. even recently Baahubali made sure that all characters are well written. You can’t just flush out 1 character and expect movie to do wonders at boxoffice. If anyone watches just 5 mins of movie and watch the Manzoor-e-Khuda song and you’ll figure out that this movie will flop. That is one of the cringing songs out there.

All the antics done by Aamir’s character are good to watch but it hardly adds anything to the story. Its like the ball is already in the air and Aamir is running very hard to make as many runs possible and in twice the speed. But dude, if that ball is caught, your running is gonna be waste and not useful for the team. Samething happened. All his side antics and flipping will go waste if the movie’s main story doesn’t work.

Overall not the worst movie ever made but if people don’t like it completely, it’ll flop and nothing could have saved it. Just wasted one of Aamir’s good characters in this movie.

This is just a poor excuse for what is a poorly written, edited and directed film. Aamir was perfect as Firangi Mallah but a poor script cannot be salvaged. I don’t think Aamir is the kinda actor who would cut into other actors’ portions at the cost of the final product. Viktor Acharya has messed up for the 3rd time in a row.

  3. I should probably even write review for Mohalla Assi but its been around 4 years since I watched the movie. YES, that’s true. I watched this movie almost 4 years back with full DVD purchased at movie shop. There was news later that movie got leaked but I didn’t even realize that movie didn’t release. This would have been debut movie for Sakshi Tanwar (who eventually debuted with Dangal).

Sunny Deol is pretty good but obviously too different from his image so doesn’t get to you with his performance. The topics are good and not too controversial and can easily be watched without controversies (IMO). But still no wonder it stuck in censors for so many years. Overall movie is worth a watch just for simple reason that its been directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. Yes, he’s the same guy who made the famous Chanakya TV series and then made a movie – Pinjar with Manoj Bapyee. Extremely talented but not getting foothold in movie industry.

This reminds me another movie on similar lines – Dharm (2007)> Dharm is way better than Mohalla Assi with extraordinary performance by Pankaj Kapur.

  4. SRK on JHMS’s failure!

King Khan opened up about Imtiaz Ali’s Jab Harry Met Sejal- which flopped at the BO. Shah Rukh Khan said, “I let people down with Jab Harry Met Sejal, which was an utter flop. But I didn’t want to let anyone down; I just liked the fact that koi story nahin thi, sirf ek ring ke chakkar mein the two people (SRK’s Harry and Anushka Sharma’s Sejal) kheechey chale jaate hain… it was very organic, slice-of-life thi. The other day I met a director who mentioned the term ‘slice-of-life’ and I said, ‘nahin, poora pumpkin do mujhe iss baar.”

Haven’t watched Race 3 and am 100% sure its not even as good as TOH but if Race 3 had Eid holiday on Thur/Fri instead of Sat/Sun, it would have done 200 crores. It lost out both holidays and still made around 165 crs.

I don’t have any data for regional (dubbed) versions.

          • I have used the same centers for comparison, with a detailed list of number of shows and percentage of occupancy.

I have assumed the same ticket prices across all metros. And the same occupancy across each multiplex as well.

But I now have some data for average price and size of multiplexes as well, at least for the major metros. I’m pretty sure even if I run those numbers, the comparison won’t change much.

The centers where Race 3 did well (Hyderabad and Ahmedabad) have lower ticket rates compared to Delhi and Bombay. It might just turn out to be worse for Race 3!

          • There were 5,000 screens I believe for TOH? If each screen is 4 shows a day, that’s 20,000 shows. Your data account for total of how many shows? If you’ve account for at least 15,000 shows then that’s great. If not, then you’re running on a lot of assumption.

It’s only after BOI put out TOH 1st day number that aamir fans fell in love with BOI and didn’t question a thing 🙂

So again, unless you can tell me you accounted for 15,000 shows out of 20,000 then i guess you can make an educated guess, otherwise it’s just a guessing game and we’ll get into if it’s SRK/salman/hrithik movie, it’s this and not a penny more and if it’s aamir film, it’s this and not a penny less. I’m sure you’ve followed boxoffice here enough to know that.

Saket – carry on, your data has more dhum than BOI as a BOI fan can’t even prove how or why BOI is better! Simple as that. Let a BOI fan come here and give me 10 bullet points on how and why BOI is better than Saket! I’ll give you my life savings!

Saket, don’t think i’m trying to question you but i’m questioning the logic. I’m an analyst by profession and on most projects, we’re given 2% margin. Here we’re going to say that out 20,000, we’ll take like 2,000 and assume 100% result out of it. With this depending on which side you are a srk/salma/hirithik 200 collection film can be easily made 180 and same of aamir can easily be made 220.

I’m not protecting BOI, in fact like i said earlier and this can be varified by few previous boxoffice thread where i was questioning aamir fans why we talk so much about BOI, why give it a free publicity. There are other sites like koimoi, addatoday, taran, etc. Use their number.

I just don’t understand why BOI get so much time here, ignore it. If it’s not reliable than why keep bringing it up.

And on Saket number, i still stand by it that his number will be no better than BOI or koimoi or anyone else, it’s all guessing game and of course it can be played with based on how you want the numbers to be.

In fact, Sunday wasn’t up on Saturday but was lower. That was a clear cut sign and by Day 5, the occupancy levels were below 20% in all metros, barring Hyderabad, where it hovered in the mid 20s.

Let’s be clear — Race 3 lasted not more than 3 days at the Box Office.

  16. Race 3 and TOH are different films. The former was ridiculed from trailer onwards. The latter at least had mixed response to trailer. Fundamentally ridiculous to compare Salman to Aamir. Salman fans will turn up to see Salman come out of jail and throw fireworks for it. Aamir fans won’t do that in masses, basically we will probably petition for longer jail term if we felt he was guilty.

A very loved Aamir film will overshadow a similar Salman one.
A crappy Salman film will overshadow a similar Aamir one.

Salman’s a bigger star but fans expect more from Aamir (all fans in general). Aamir falls harder but he rides higher all things being equal. He’s at the ends of the bell curve whereas Salman’s more in the middle zone. Unsurprisingly TOH tumbled quicker than Tubelight and Race 3. And likewise Salman still chases PK and Dangal.

And what ToH made over its first 4 days is what Race 3 made over 6 days.

Compare equal type of movies. And you want to become resident boxoffice expert? How will your commentary be any different than BOI?

Except, it wasn’t. Imtiaz Ali does not make small films — Rockstar, Tamasha aren’t small films by any means. If these are small films than the likes of Anurag Kashyap make nano-films. We’ll have to devise new nomenclature for the entire industry.

I did not compare Dear Zindagi with ToH. That would be absurd.

As for Secret Superstar, it made roughly 118 million dollars in China. If I compare it to ToH, it’s the latter that will be obliterated. Not SS!

Shock value from ToH is bigger than Trimurty or Roop Ki Raani or even Mera Naam Joker. More than the financial loss it is the unbelievable reality of Big B + Aamir doing such a bad movie. If it had been any one of the star, it would not have been so worse. But the hype generated by asking audience to pay via a highly priced tickets to see the two greats got completely shattered.

At least I am optimistic about it, though Rajnikanth in a masala avatar is nails-scratching-on-chalkboard for me. I am not a South Indian, so I don’t care whether this one is a hit or flop. However, making a good-looking person like Akshay look ugly, unless and until it is justified, is a no-no for me.

True. That’s the project’s biggest risk in hindi film’s market. Hopefully the transformation is justified and our audiences accept.

“I am not a South Indian, so I don’t care whether this one is a hit or flop. ”

I think the makers from south india quite ambitiously have tries to make this a pan india movie and this plan was in place even before Baahubali 2 became all India blockbuster. 2.0 was supposed to release before BB2 and already was more ambitious in its attempt.
For Akshay and his fans, 2point0 is like a lottery. I don’t see any mainstream heroes playing a villain. This makes 2.0 unique with a mainstream hero playing a villain in the biggest movie. Gan go wrong for sure..making it risky but will get the rewards if done well.

  30. Thugs of Hindostan super flop, but YRF will still make money!
    November

It will be the exhibitors and smaller distributors who will take almost 75% of the hit.

“The Rs 1.5 billion to Rs 2 billion deficit in the film’s collection, to allow everyone involved to make money or at least break even, will hurt the exhibitors and distributors the most. Many of the deals have been signed on a minimum guarantee basis. This means the risk is primarily taken by the exhibitor,” says another film executive in the know.

While it has hedged its risk through its distribution model in India, YRF has also fortified the ancillary revenue streams for the movie.

It has an ongoing deal with Amazon Prime Video for OTT streaming rights, and has also sold the satellite rights of the film to Sony Pictures Network India. The two together are estimated to fetch YRF close to Rs 700 million.

In addition to this, the film’s distribution rights in China have been sold to distribution firm E Stars for an estimated Rs 1 billion.

This means that the studio will be able to break even and make profits with the help of ancillary revenues.

Additionally, the film has been released abroad as well, and has collected around Rs 400 million so far, further adding to YRF’s kitty.

While YRF may avoid huge losses on account of the film, the industry is disappointed in Thugs of Hindostan given its star cast (Aamir Khan Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh), the time of release and the scale of release.

“It’s not enough for the producer to make money. The various stakeholders — distributors and exhibitors — should not suffer, or at least the risk should be the same,” says another distributor.

“Theatrical (business) is still the bread and butter for many in the eco-system, and if films don’t do well in the theatres and have to depend on OTT and satellite revenues for profitability, then there is something wrong with the model.”

What a surprise this perfect little movie with stories for urban middle class. From small kid wanting his room and the family making a makeshift bed next to the bathroom sink with bedsheets hanging to create a room, to nosy neighbors asking questions like “where are you going?”, to cute aunty maroing line on neighbor’s grown son, to nukkad ke boys making fun of you, to those useless relatives who never help out with taking care of senior citizens of the family and yet never miss a chance at sarcastic remarks, to kanjus dad giving a mango as tip, to school bullies in middle school and overwhelming feeling of “log kya kehenge” in all aspects of ones life, everything in the movie feels like part of ones own family and familiar. The theater was semi-full and we all laughed through out the movie. The best part of the movie, of all the ensemble of amazing actors, is Gajraj Rao. Never have I ever in hindi cinema known anyone who can emote embarrasment, shame, attraction or flirting glances, fear and myriad of emotions, so subtly and so beautifully, so perfectly without exaggeration. It was perfect screenplay, editing, acting and a character appearing for single scene left impact. Every dialogues were cracking and dadi’s dialogues got lots of approval and support from women in audience! Amit Sharma has arrived with this movie! I expect great things from him in future.

One can watch this one once it’s on TV; and quite not a mandatory theater visit — at least for me. They have indeed captured the Delhi middle-class pulse quite well. With the exception of Khurana’s MTV style of acting, all the actors have uniformly acted well, with great turns by both Gaja and Neena.

Yet from examining his 10-picture filmography, one gets the sense that he is a man obsessed with pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling both narratively and structurally. As such, obsession seeps into his creative work: His most astonishing efforts all feature protagonists consumed by similar thinking, whether it be rival magicians risking everything to beat one another or a caped crime fighter suffering from a cracked psyche. In the end, Nolan may place a greater emphasis on form over pathos, a style that may not appeal to everyone. But that style has resulted in some of the biggest, most entertaining and most influential movies of the past 20 years.

  37. Another great trailer of Alita.

    Like

    • Fans of the manga and anime have awaited the live-action version of Alita: Battle Angel with trepidation. Past live-action versions of beloved anime staples, including Death Note and Sailor Moon, have failed to meet expectations to various degrees. Considering the limitless nature of a cartoon special effects budget, this isn’t particularly surprising. However, the latest improvements in CGI are changing all of that.

The fact that Robert Rodriguez is directing this adaptation is heartening for people who know his work. The famed director of El Mariachi knows how to squeeze a lot of action out of limited resources. Rodriguez long ago left the world of secondhand equipment and medical testing behind him, but he clearly retains the instincts that he originally honed on a $7,000 budget. The Alita trailer is snappy, fast, and already shows off several separate battle scenes that display Rodriguez’s trademark passion for quality action.
The script is another story. Despite a competent cast including Christopher Waltz and Michelle Rodriguez, the acting already looks bad and Alita (Rosa Salazar) won’t be bringing home any awards for this. Critics watching the trailer already cringe at the painfully corny, stilted dialogue. But this isn’t a movie about talking. The combination coming-of-age story and teen romance that the film will likely focus upon won’t be particularly deep or original fare. That’s OK. This will be a shiny, fun movie and there will be little reason to take it seriously.

Alita: Battle Angel will release on February 14, 2019.

EXCLUSIVE: Exhibitors of Thugs of Hindostan in mental trauma; demand REFUND against the Minimum Guarantee

Thugs of Hindostan has proved to be one of the biggest disasters of this decade as neither the producers nor the actor and not even the exhibitors have made money from this magnum opus starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan film directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. The only party for whom the film has proved to be a profitable venture are the sub-distributors of YRF who distributed the film on commission basis, as it has been the norm for all their films. Before getting into the actual issue, let us first explain the business model of Thugs of Hindostan.

All Yash Raj Films are distributed in different territories by their own set of distributors on commission basis i.e. the distributors get 10 to 12% of the distributors share whereas the rest is pocketed by the producers. Same was the case with Thugs of Hindostan. Since it was on a commission basis, the sub-distributors didn’t lose money however the exhibitors had to face a burn in their pocket. At almost all territories in India, the sub-distributors signed a Minimum Guarantee deal with the exhibitors and quoted an amount just a little under Baahubali 2, thereby pocketing a major chunk of the profit. By doing so, the sub-distributors made hefty monies thereby hedging their risk by passing it on to exhibitors. But the exhibitors have lost out on more than half of their investments. Our trade sources have confirmed that the losses entailed by the exhibitors on this film are higher than Tubelight, thereby making Thugs of Hindostan one of the biggest loss makers of this decade. A few examples of theatres which lost money are mentioned below:

    Madhav Talkies (Bihar)
    MG: Rs. 4 Lakh
    Collection: Rs. 1.96 Lakh
    Loss: 51%

    Sangeet Cinema (Bihar)
    MG: Rs. 4 Lakh
    Collection: Rs. 2.15 Lakh
    Loss: 46.25%

    Nutan Cinema (Sitamrdi)
    MG: Rs. 7.50 Lakh
    Collection: Rs. 4.20 Lakh
    Loss: 44%

This is the uniform scenario all across the country and the same has resulted in a lot of exhibitors going into a MENTAL TRAUMA and SEVERE DEPRESSION. We spoke to exhibitors who had bought the film out of trust on Aamir Khan and Brand YRF, however, due to the dismal content, they felt cheated and totally let down. “We had lost a similar amount on Tubelight as well, however Salman Khan refunded us the money. We plan to approach our territory distributors to claim refund because we know that they have made ample monies from this film due to the minimum guarantee contracts. We hope our message reaches out to Aamir Khan and YRF, who will help us get back our money from the territory distributors,” said a trade source.

Another source revealed that this scenario is different from films like Tubelight and Jab Harry Met Sejal because in those cases, the producers had made humongous profits. However this time around, even the producers have lost money and it is only the sub-distributors who have managed to get some amount of money as they entered into a several contracts with exhibitors. While the exhibitors across the country have lost around 50 to 60% of their investments, the producers Yash Raj Films too have lost a substantial sum of their investment. However, they still stand a chance to enter into a break-even situation if the film performs well in China.

      • Exhibitors watching full movie is out of question. In current times, even distributors don’t get to watch full movies. They get to watch some footage that too only for some movies for negotiation purposes. I don’t think TOH needed to show any footage at all as it was one of the hottest productions in recent times. Everything is belief game but its like lottery. You win some and you lose some but sometimes losses can be huge and impacts distributors or exhibitors. In the current situation of TOH, Sub-distributors should refund some money to Exhibitors.

Yes, but if you read the article you’ll realize that here producers are also in loss and only sub-distributors are in green. So, if any refund, it has to come from sub-distributors and I don’t think they are as generous as movie stars or big production houses.

          • Yes it’s different but I’m sure YRF can apply the pressure. This is a massive disaster.

        • These are serious losses. From this report it seems exhibitor losses are in the range of 45-50% after ToH doing 145 cr nett. So 300 cr was needed just to have everyone in green in the food chain. I guess the case was similar for Race 3 earlier this year.

And with their current standings, srk’s zero needs 200 cr to get even and 2.0 needs 160 cr nett. This says a lot by itself.

Who needs any star ranking systems? If the MGs and distribution prices for biggies are made transparent, that will pretty much say everything.

I think the trailer and subsequent posters focussing majorly on Akshay is doing the trick and making hindi audience/ analysts feel like Akki has some decent role. Else the teaser, focussing only on Rajni, was a disaster because it did not have anything different from Endhiran.

That Akshay makeover video has gone viral the way Ghajini makeover video had. At least genuine effort to achieve perfection is showing in that video. So its clicking in some way.

Baaki after ToH i will not predict much. Kuch bhi ho sakta hai. WoM would be severe here in either ways.

Aside, Looking at 2019 movie lineup…i don’t see any movie looking big enough to come close to ToH. Maybe Southern films will pave the way in a big way. But the lineup of Sallu, SRK, Aamir is quite ordinary. Aamir and SRK has no release while Salman has only Bharath. That’s a disappointment. Even Akki has Kesari and Housefull 4. Nothing exciting on paper.

Ranbir and Ranveer are doing risky projects. No one film which we can say with some confidence that those would do 200+

    • Usually I do not like reviews which argues that “MY” sensibility is cinematically superior over “YOU”. My understanding of Masala is better. Contemporary public has little knowledge of 70s masala, blah, blah, back, ship, etc.

Such arguments smacks of half knowledge about the subject. I am ok with one liking or disliking a movie. Even if one has a minority view, why to put yourself on pedestal?

On ToH Box office, following is what comes to my understanding-

There are movies with 100 cr, 200 cr, 300 cr box office targets. Sometimes a smaller target can reach bigger and that’s when we call the movie a superhit.

ToH i think was good to be a 200 Cr hit but aimed for 300 Cr+ with the likes of superb movies like Dangal. In the process it lost 50 Cr, which it deserved. It surely worked for a segment and i know people who found ToH a time pass movie deserving to be seen once. So clearly once again the budget and marketing that’s at fault, never the movie, stars or the director.

Hence i blame YRF and Aditya Chopra for this. They are the real culprits. They are not coming in defense of the trio who is facing the heat – Victor, Amitabh and Aamir. Adi…hello? It’s ok to be camera conscious but not ok to not accept the blame and defend the team?

      • “It surely worked for a segment and i know people who found ToH a time pass movie deserving to be seen once”

If you think TOH also worked for a segment, there is no flop in this industry ever. There’s some small sectional of audience which will like any movie irrespective of its flop status but that doesn’t mean we can say the movie worked for a segment of audience. We are talking maybe 2%-5% of ppl liking and 90% to 95% disliking.

        Like

        • “We are talking maybe 2%-5% of ppl liking and 90% to 95% disliking.”

I think usually its not so simple.

Take an example of a movie like ToH.

5-10% will love any movie of their star/genre.
10% will like any movie of their star / genre.
So these 15-20% people will always like any film featuring their favourite genre or star. They are the ones who fight it out with the rest 80% who saw the movie but did not love/like to the same extent.

Now we have 80% left who did not like or love the film. Let me dissect those.

Did not like but was ok. 30%
Did not like but moved on. 40%

These two ratios are ok for most hit-superhit films. 70% are usually in this category for most of the hindi films.

Did not like but hated. 20-30% (THIS WAS ALARMINGLY HIGH FOR TOH). Usually this number is less than 10% for a hit movie and less than 2% for a superhit movie.
Now the reason for hatred is the way the movie is marketed. Here people feel and usually get cheated.
So unnecessary hype, overselling, highly priced tickets and perception matters here and these were all wrong with ToH.

Though the Rs. 110 cr. minimum guarantee deal now stands void, Yash Raj Films we hear is currently working at breakneck speed to salvage the situation. “Given this new development, the makers of Thugs of Hindostan are trying their best to see what they can save, after all this deal was a major revenue stream to recover their investments. But sadly, it seems rather unlikely that anything can be saved given the fact that Estars was clear about the previous deal being totally scrapped”, adds the source.

However, contrary to the reports, a source who works closely with the major Bollywood production house denies the same saying, “YRF never renegotiates their deals. As far as I know, the deal and the said amount are cast in stone and remain the same, nothing has changed.” Further explaining the source continued, “Thugs of Hindostan is a big film and all deals were done before its release, notwithstanding the box office collections the deal will continue to remain the same”.

While this change in deal is certainly a massive blow to the makers of Thugs of Hindostan we hear that even the release date of the film in China has now been changed. Though keeping in line with our previous report, the Chinese version of Thugs of Hindostan will see Amitabh Bachchan and Fatima Sana Sheikh’s roles being edited while enhancing Aamir Khan’s role will no longer release in December. Detailing this, the source adds, “Now that the deal between Estars Films and Yash Raj Films is being renegotiated, the release of Thug of Hindostan in China has been pushed. In fact, the film will now release only in January 2019, instead of December 2018 as mentioned earlier. But rest assured the run time of the film will be just 2 hours 21 minutes which is still shorter than the Indian version.”

However matters don’t end there. Letting out yet another detail the source tells us that unlike his previous visits to China, this time round Aamir Khan will skip his promotional visit. “Aamir Khan has become a household name in China, and given the success of his films here, the actor generally makes a trip to China to promote his films. But this time, Aamir will be giving China a miss, and will forego his usual visit to promote the film in China.” Now, with this latest bit of information, the Chinese box office prospects of Thugs of Hindostan have taken a massive blow. Given the rather competitive Chinese market and the plethora of releases, we guess only time will tell whether the Chinese release of Thugs of Hindostan will be a profitable venture for Yash Raj Films.

    • I think it could be mistake. Aamir and YRF should proceed with release plans as nothing happened. Flopping in India is different as Indian audience has seen such masala fares all their lives but for China, it’ll be new experience and it can connect at some level. Once connects, it can mint and get their money back and profits.

      • I have said the same before. But seems like Aamir has taken ToH failure in India to his heart …

Can happen if you have not tasted a flop for 18 long years (MP yielded no profits but was not a loss maker, while ToH is a disaster). One has to go back to 2000 for his last flop – Mela. He has been flying too high for too long and perhaps cant take the shit in a sporting manner.

Agree that he should bite the pill and go through the promotions in China. One never knows whats gonna happen.

Readers Write In #60: Thugs of Hinduston is a fantastic tribute to Masala cinema and its leading men

    Posted on November 19, 2018 24

On why thugs of Hindostan is no lazy rehash of the masala formula , but a well constructed modern tribute that echoes back to best of the genre.

Take the character of Khudabaksh played by Amitabh Bachchan, its less a character, more an accumulation of his most iconic moments. Yet it did become a fully realized masala hero for me. His introduction scene in the film references his most massy introduction scenes in three of his earlier films, Coolie, Khuda Gawah and Thoofan. He comes out of nowhere like a god riding a horse to save the life of young Zafira’s who would be played as an adult by Fatima sana Sheikh. Cut to 11 years later, now he is like Don with his own army and his own private hideout. Like in the film Don, when we first meet him in a full on dialogue sequence, he is seen executing a traitor within the gang. Its also fun to see him spit out names of his comrades like Sawant, Akbar, Bhima etc, which are the names of characters he was associated in the past – Akbar was Rishi kapoor’s name in Amar Akbar Anthony and Bhima being the character he himself played in Aaj ka Arjun, one of his more successful movies from the late eighties period where he had a welcome return to the mythical masala roots , as opposed to more comic book masala stuff he was doing – but also to a secular movie past where they tried to include all religions, even if stereotypical, into the movie’s fabric. Khudabaksh itself seems to be a callback to the iconic muslim characters that Bachchan himself has played, like Sikander, Iqbal, Badshah Khan and so on.

What about Aamir’s Firangi?,As I said already it’s a nod to Bachchan’s More lighter masala characters. Think of his son character from Desh Premee . In that film Bachchan put on blackface and sang gore nahin hum kale sahi, here Aamir puts on a blonde wig and impersonates a white man in the surayya song. His manner of speaking with broken English words and his self introduction seem to be inspired from the Arjun singh character from Namak Halaal

That’s not all, Adding one more dimension to the character, It’s also referencing the gallery of lovable rogues that Aamir has played from Jo jeeta wohi sikander to 3 idiots. His introduction scene is a mixture of his dus ka bees , dus ka bees act from Rangeela as well as his iconic Lagaan. This is a more physical, more over the top performance than anything he has given before. But I liked Aamir in his over the top mode mainly because of the kind of actor he is. Someone like Shahrukh Khan is by his nature a very physical performer, a very busy performer. So when he take the hammy route, it becomes intolerable to watch, on the other hand if he could hold his energy and his hamminess just a little bit he is able to deliver striking performances as in Swades or Chak De. Aamir is exactly the opposite. By nature , he is a very subdued, very subtle performer to an extent that his performance fails to register sometimes. He is very enjoyable here most of the times and sometimes I see him falling flat trying too hard, but he is still tolerable.

The main plot point of Aamir infiltrating Bachchan’s gang at the instigation of the British authorities can be attributed to Don. The film is also heavily inspired by the masala pastiche template of Sholay. Very serious scenes interspersed with more lowbrow humor. Aamir even does a chaplinseque nod as Asrani does in that film. You can see the symmetry in characters too. Bachchan- fatima duo standing in for is sanjeev kumar jaya bhaduri duo. Aamir is mixture of veeru and basanti, conning & fast talking gibberish. there it was dhanno the horse, here its nawab the ass. Gabbar and bandits morph into Clive and the east India company.

More tributes follow just before the interval point. Once Aamir betrays him to the british, both of them are locked in a duel reminiscent of the Bachchan –Dara singh duel at the end of Mard. There, a revelation of them being father and son changes the nature of the duel and they decided to join forces to fight the british. Here its more of a awakening of conscious in Aamir that changes the course of the duel, when he saves Bachchan from death. Bachchan decides to embark upon a suicide mission to destroy the british ship, handing over the protection of Zafira as well as the reigns of the film to Aamir. In an echo of the first scene with Bachchan saving the young Zafira, here Aamir saves her from the british and take her to safety, while Bachchan reminiscent of his most iconic scene in Agneepath rams his burning ship into the other destroying it and perhaps killing himself in the process . The famous aswa shweth rakth se latpat poetry recitation becomes sheesham ke ghode pe aayeg sawaari shaamt gunehgaron ki

Undoubtedly this first half of thugs is the most entertaining, most absorbing and most fun. Once Bachchan is presumed to be dead, the film goes dead for a time too. Post the interval, the film loses its momentum. The tributes disappear and it becomes more of a straightforward masala film, and without Bachchan’s character the film becomes off balance. Even more grating is the filmmakers obsession to Jack sparrow-fy Aamir’s character, where its repeatedly hinted that Aamir has no control of his nature and he himself is afraid when he would become bad again. That’s strict no-no for a masala hero. It’s a good tactic to turn the central avenging angel in a masala film into a female character, but here Fatima’s Zafira is so badly conceived and even more badly enacted that it leaves a big whole in the masala heart of the film. It also points out to the fact that we don’t have masala film heroines of the caliber of Rekha, Reena roy, etc anymore who can convincingly pull off the requirements of the masala universe

But once Bachchan returns to screen, all shackled and angry in his Kaalia mode the film springs back to life. The final forty minutes of the film again becomes a masala treat with nodes to Kranti, Shaan etc. the film also brings back the tradition of the climactic song sequence which was a must of very popular masala film, even though , here the song is not as rousing or spectacular as say the one in Kranti, it still makes an impact.

    • This may be an unabashed tribute to masala, but it does not work as a masala film. My exchange with Jay and Saket stressed on this. I know for sure that if this was successful masala, i wudnt have liked this even a bit. And to repeat myselg again, I loved this film.

The generic problem with this film is two-fold, as already discussed to death here. (1) The emotional connect fell flat for a revenge masala saga. And (2) masala heroism was completely turned around with Firangi’s Machiavellian characterisation, which is not something Aamir had played before be it Rangeela or Ghulam or whaever. It is too simplistic to say hey this is another mischievous character in the masala world. Its simply not.

The above two reasons explains the severe backlash that ToH got. Combined with other additional factors like hype, overpriced tickets, bad reviews and expectations from the star-cast and banner as Naveen mentioned above.

There is nothing more to this fiasco. aamir should not kill himself for this!

      • People did not like Ghajini because Satyam could write an essay about how the memory loss can be interpreted as the loss of vintage masala in our times. Nor did they care how Firangi’s character and actions because it can be read as a metaphor for Aamir’s career moves.

All that really matters is IF they could emotionally connect to the story. Then they will like it, even love it. Else they are disinterested.

Films That Broke The Opening Day Record But Eventually Became Flops At The Box Office

#1. Thugs of Hindostan (2018): The Aamir Khan starrer released last week and opened to record-breaking Rs 52.25 crore. It became the first film to hit a half-century at the box office on its opening day itself but collapsed after that. It’s been 7 days and the movie has earned a meagre Rs 137.55 crore. It looks difficult for the film to even go past Rs 150 crore mark.

#2. Mission Kashmir (2000): The movie opened bigger than its fellow release Mohabbatein making Rs 1.64 crore and broke the opening day record of Refugee, which had released earlier that year. Hrithik Roshan had just become the thing after Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and there he was in his first action movie along the likes of Sanjay Dutt in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir. Despite it clashing with the Big B-SRK starrer Mohabbatein, Mission Kashmir became the highest opener of 2000 but succumbed to the average word of mouth. The extremely dominant pre-release buzz gave enough space for Mission Kashmir to be the highest opener of the year.

#3. Mangal Pandey(2005): Before Thugs of Hindostan, it was Mangal Pandey: The Rising. The movie was hyped to an all-time high and that resulted in an opening day record making Rs 3.24 crore but it couldn’t go anywhere post that. Aamir Khan was coming back to the big screen after four long years in what could only have been thought of as the biggest film of the year. There was no way Mangal Pandey wasn’t opening big. Sadly enough when the film got opened to the audiences, the reports weren’t too encouraging. While the film may technically not be termed a box office flop, it still, however, was one of the biggest let downs of the year. But only after it thumped a solid opening!

#4. Refugee (2000): The fact that Amitabh Bachchan’s son was making his debut had made Refugee a hot property. And it was also the debut of Kareena Kapoor Khan, sister of Karishma Kapoor and granddaughter of the showman of Hindi film industry Raj Kapoor. A record-breaking start was a given and that’s what happened. The movie made Rs 1.56 crore but went downhill afterward.

#6. Hindustan Ki Kasam (1999): The mind-boggling pre-release buzz for this Ajay Devgn starrer would know why Hindustan Ki Kasam was the highest opener in 1999. The television promos of the film had created a ruckus and an action packed bonanza was kept in waiting. However, the results turned out to be disastrous as the mega budget movie didn’t find takers post the opening weekend. The movie created a new opening day record by making Rs 1.45 crore but couldn’t cash on the record-breaking start. It was the directorial debut of Ajay Devgn’s father Veeru Devgan.

#7. Koyla (1997): This Shah Rukh Khan starrer was much-awaited thanks to its chartbuster music, thrilling trailer and the fact that it was the reunion of SRK with Rakesh Roshan after the blockbuster Karan Arjun. The movie created an all-time opening record as it made Rs 1.06 crore. But it couldn’t live up to the mammoth expectations.

#8. Trimurti (1995): The first film in the history of Indian cinema to hit Rs 1 crore mark on its opening day was this Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and Shah Rukh Khan starrer. This one came as no surprise as Trimurti was one mega movie that looked like was going to be another Subhash Ghai blockbuster. While stars like Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor were at the peak of their career, Shah Rukh Khan had just become the thing after Baazigar and other movies. However, it was because of showman Subhash Ghai and his production house that Trimurti was being seen as the biggest film of 1995 even though Mukul Anand was directing it. Despite having taken a bumper opening, the film majorly started to see fall in numbers.

    • Hindustan ki Kasam got record opening weekend because of Bachchan presence , that’s the reason he was all over promos and posters .. despite a supporting role. Govinda and Ajay never got record opening in their lifetime except #BMCM and #HKK with Bachchan. Craze for Amitabh was still there till late 90’s .. Its just that one after another bad movies (Mostly record openers) coupled with his age factor slowly moved his fan base away. Heck even his Lal Badshah was off to flying start on first day , despite huge pre release bashing.

      • Even in the early 2000’s after his famous Mohabbatein comeback, he was one of the most saleable actors and among the top 5 between 2000-05 alongside Srk, Aamir, Hrithik and Salman. Films like Aankhen and Khakee were actually Bachchan vehicles despite the presence of present day stars like Akshay and Ajay who were not really crowd pullers back then.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Thugs Of Hindostan collected just 75 lakhs nett on Monday and even a very ratio of business is coming from single screens especially UP as the multiplexes have just capitulated. The film will not do 3 times its opening day business when the good big films go and do around 3 times the weekend business. This is films that open with big numbers.

In Delhi / UP, East Punjab and Mysore the film will close with less business than Badhaai Ho.
    First Week – 1,34,25,00,000 apprx
    Second Weekend – 5,25,00,000 apprx
    Monday – 75,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,40,25,00,000 apprx

IMO real collections wud be around 130-135 cr range, BUT I had said during Race 3 run too that Race 3 total was also in this range (130 cr nett) and was over-reported shamelessly by Salman Khan Films.

    ******************

Despite its flaws, Mirzapur has a certain earnestness and perhaps the over-enthusiasm of a young creative team. Prosthetics and VFX are liberally used to create eyeballs, intestines and blown up brains that splatter across the screen ever so often in the 9 episodes of Season 1, but they cannot make up for the lack of nuance, and a story that endeavours to stick to a formula instead of reinventing it. Right at the beginning of the season, Beena quips to her husband after a dissatisfying lovemaking session, “garam karke thanda chod dete hain” (You turn me on me but leave me dissatisfied). It’s the same problem with Mirzapur itself, it starts off well but cannot hold your interest till the end.

one more thing which lacked in TOH was an intense love-story. BB & BB2 both had the base of a very intense love-story. Something which had a genuine conflict at screenplay level. Here the director never developed KK or Fatima’s character to that extent……no depth! TOH shd be a case-study of “how to screw up things at the script and screenplay level” 🙂

    • I feel that Aamir and YRF were hesitant to explore the love angle after they cast Fatima as his leading lady right after Dangal. They literally kept her away from promotions and in the movie as well fearing if any backlash happens they can fall back that she’s not paired opp Aamir but instead Katrina is opp Aamir whereas Fatima is just another character with no love angle. This is just my assumption and not fact.

well, aamir’s character is shown gently flirting with Fatima’s character but with Kat’s character – he is far more cosy – so that had to be explored…..when one remembers BB/BB2 – that intense romance deftly directed by Rajamouli is the soul of an otherwise grand war drama….any magnum opus generally has a romance at its core…be it Titanic or a Spiderman or a Mughl-e-Azam or even Sholay….which had 2 of them…..Raju Hirani knew this while making PK – He had a lovely romantic track betn Anushka-Sushant and an unrequited love-angle from PK for Anushka…..romance is an integral part of Indian cinema….even the massy Ghajini had Asin as its soul and that romance….i wud like to know Satyam, Jay, An Jo, Q and everyone else’ view on this particular aspect and whether YRF missed out that completely in TOH…

        • Agree with you totally. A good love story and a good villain or a substantial conflict, always makes a good masala. If it was made on the lines of PoC, then the central character JohnnyDepp/Aamir need to be interesting enough to hold the interest for entire 3 hour period. We loved Johnny’s antics in PoC and therefore it went into part 2 and 3. His character was superbly fleshed out. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to watch Aamir’s antics for 3 hours, at 30-35 maybe, at 50 no no. Acting wise I don’t think they are at the par. The trailer itself was off puting in that aspect. 😦

yes that conflict was missing….revenge of Fatima was childishly handled and half-baked….only serious conflict has been a love-story since the beginning of Hindi films….one can name N no. of masala films, all have had stronger love-stories at the core….even Ghajini, PK, 3I, Talaash had the hero-heroine love stories….TZP, Dangal had strong conflicts in the fomr of maternal love and paternal love subsequently…..any universally hit films at the BO would have this aspect nicely taken care of…..in South also, most of the masala films become massive hits despite extreme violence at times becoz at the core – there is a delicate love-story….check Mani Ratnam’s films – always a sensitive love-story….aamir’s fanna and RDB had this aspect in abundance…i don’t know why it was not addressed here in such a magnum opus! it is like James Cameron making a documentary out of Titanic minus Jack-n-Rose!!!!

  63. Zero: Shah Rukh Khan in an Aanand L Rai film marks a perfect finish to a year full of heartland films

Hindi cinema is made for Hindi-speaking audiences. In essence, India’s busiest filmmaking industry aims to reach the Hindi heartland -be it the geographical landmass consisting of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, or the migrant population from these states, who reside across the country and worldwide.

While the ’90s and the early 2000s were spent imitating and regurgitating a standardised Punjabi version of life, love and emotions, the Hindi heartland has now taken center stage with pride in the mainstream. Often the Bihari or ‘Bhaiyya’ in Hindi films has been a caricature or an unpleasant character. Refreshingly, this year has seen authentic Hindi heartland-based stories, rooted and original, winning big at the box office. This space has finally solidified with genuine, believable films. In its mannerisms, accents, dialects and local cultural quirks, the heartland has a well-defined identity and age-old traditions of storytelling. Manifesting these in contemporary times has made the films fresh and appealing this year.

Hearteningly, a superstar like Shah Rukh Khan has played a vertically challenged man from Meerut in the upcoming big flick Zero, having travelled quite a long distance from the urbane, suave versions of Rahul and Raj that he is played for most of his career. That films like Raid, Stree, Mulk and Sui Dhaaga: Made in India have done so well is testimony to the fact that localised stories around ground realities and with genuine characters successfully work, and draw in audiences based on word of mouth.

Crime, guns and womanising- cliches about the Hindi heartland come together in the recent gritty series Mirzapur. Made for Amazon Prime Video India and produced by Excel Entertainment, Karan Anshuman ropes in an impressive cast of actors – Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi and Divyendu Sharma among others – in this fast-paced web show. Typical sensibilities associated with this region, often called the cow belt in political terminology, add up to the right recipe for a gripping story.

Interestingly, the filmmakers and writers, who have created each of these films or shows, either belong to that region or have grown up here. They have spent time understanding the local culture, language and customs, and adapted the same to cinema convincingly. The heartland’s appeal was limited to hyper-dramatic cop and political dramas for almost two decades. While some films, like Prakash Jha’s Gangajal, Apaharan and Raajneeti made for engaging viewing, more often than not, the heartland was stereotyped. Few films cut through the clutter.

The clock turned towards positive change when stories went beyond the cliché of good cops, bad politicians, or family dramas. A good chunk of this credit goes to the inimical Vishal Bharadwaj for making Omkara. Abusing uninhibitedly in Hindi, while capturing the nuanced underlying politics of heartland Uttar Pradesh was done masterfully in this film. Some years passed after his film for more such authentic, rooted stories to emerge. So we had Abhishek Chaubey make the brilliant Ishqiya films; subtle, linguistically befuddling but smart adaptations from culturally distinct places in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Ashwini Iyer Tewari, Tamil by origin and a Mumbai girl, used the lens of an outsider to merge aesthetics and obsessions of small town UP to tell a compelling story of a domestic help’s desire to educate her daughter and make her an IAS officer in Nil Battey Sannata. It is an unsung film, one that gets the story so right. The passion to become a civil servant rules almost every aspect of a student’s life in these states. Ashwini has also made the entertaining Bareilly Ki Barfi, more commercial in intent but equally desi in flavour. And then there is Anurag Kashyap, who has adapted the culture of Bihari goondaism and its iron grip over the state’s politics beautifully in the Gangs of Wasseypur films. Self-indulgent to an extent, both the parts are uncompromising in their ‘Bihar Ka Lalla’ identity; adding flavour to these stories. Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan also turns romantic stories of Punjab on its head quite well. It is urbane and set to become a gradual cult film over time.

But the team that has made the Hindi heartland come home to roost in Bollywood is that of filmmaker Anand L Rai and writer Hemanshu Sharma. Their films have adapted local mannerisms and linguistic quirks for wider appeal in a manner that does not always depend on stars for success. Raanjhanaa provides an ideal example, with Dhanush’s character ready to give up everything for love, or rather, the bull headnesses of one-sided love. Their ability to build upon small town North Indian elements continues with Zero. SRK, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif make this film a big draw, but Meerut’s Bauua Singh and his bittersweet experiences with love drive this story. These are not always the best stories. Yet, they work well with audiences because emotions and reactions are unfiltered and dialogues, very catchy. Each character, however minor, has a role to play in taking the story forward, cracking the heartland phenomenon of families, friends and foes all being part of life in significant decisions.

In 2018, films that brought the heartland’s stories alive emerged from local influences that impacted their writers and directors. Sui Dhaaga: Made in India emerged from the basic idea of a self-made man, an artisan, standing up against machines. Writer and director Sharat Katariya saw a tailor set up shop under a tree in his hometown, Delhi, when this idea occurred to him. His Delhi if of those who live in the city’s outskirts, eke out a living and leave behind a rich legacy of working with their traditional skills. His earlier film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, beautifully portrays the lower middle class realities of families in Haridwar, a town somewhat warped in time. Similarly, Amar Kaushik, who has grown up in Arunachal Pradesh but spent ample time in Chanderi while visiting family, captured local superstition to deliver a message film in the most entertaining manner, with Stree. Rajkumar Gupta wanted to focus on an everyday hero with Raid. Anubhav Sinha has grown up and travelled through Banaras and smaller cities of Uttar Pradesh before moving to Mumbai in order to work in films. Sinha’s urbane movies are poor shows. But his return to roots with Mulk, which began with slow travel back in his home state, made this story come alive for him. Importantly, in each of these films, stars are part of a story. The story gets your attention without depending on a big star’s name.

Going beyond the garish and clichéd, India’s heartland, often likened to crimes, superstition, messy politics and prejudice against women, is viewed with an amount of skepticism by urbanites. All these negatives are part of its reality. But there are also good people, positive beginnings and very interesting stories that emerge from here. As these films find a footing with audiences across India today, heartland-based films hold out opportunities for more stories in an industry starved of originality. Imtiaz Ali’s Radha Krishna film promises to be one and hopefully, there will be more varied explorations of these kind.

Directors of today should watch some of the old songs to get a clue on how to picturize songs. This song is simple yet covers many angles. Simple dance steps but look at the body movement, facial expression of the leads. Gives that “Mardana” vibe in every shot. Which is very missing in todays cinema (south over does it).

        • True stage is set for Akshay now. 20 Cr opening would be disappointing for 2.0 as the makers are counting on Hindi belt to bail them out. If not for this, no way $70 million cost can be recovered.
Expectation from Hindi is over 175 Cr nett. For this opening of 30Cr is needed, weekend of 100 Cr at least. It’s not the usual cost controlled Akshay film which can be a HIT at 100 Cr. This is elephant he is carrying in hindi belt this time. Good thing is 2point0 Hindi is padded with enough armoury though a big heroine would have helped.

  70. 2018 Heads For Growth Despite No Support From Big Festival Releases
    Wednesday 21 November 2018 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

The year looks heading for record cumulative figures with 3650 crore in the bag already in terms of GROSS box office. GROSS is being used to compare as there have been tax changes in the last year or so. The year should come out with a 10% improvement over last year if the last few big releases of the year give the expected performance.

This performance has come without the big festival releases firing so on that note its good results for the year but these big ones are a must to really push the Hindi film industry to higher levels. The boost has come from smaller films which are doing better than a couple of years back when 75 crore nett was a huge task for these films. The difference is that makers have come out of that urban zone film and padded these films with music to make them more appealing.

Its very rare for a small film to be a universal HIT but Stree managed that feat and the last time this happened was Aashiqui 2. No doubt Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Badhaai Ho and Raazi have also done very well in this period but they have not done well across the board like Stree or Aashiqui 2.

The footfalls look like staying in the same range as last year as the growth is coming from higher ticket prices. The footfalls can only go up if the big films really perform and that 200 crore nett mark is still proving a big benchmark when it should not. There are three major releases left with 2.0 (Hindi), Zero and Simba but it cant be said that 200 crore nett is a given for each of these films but when looking at the budgets and names behind these films then 200 crore nett should be a foregone conclusion.

The cumulative GROSS business seen each year since 2010 is as follows. 2012-2013 is the best period seen this decade.

    2010 – 1910 crore
    2011 – 2382 crore
    2012 – 3241 crore
    2013 – 3767 crore
    2014 – 3678 crore
    2015 – 3780 crore
    2016 – 3808 crore
    2017 – 4096 crore
    2018 – 3650 crore (5 weeks left)

Its not even just Hindi but all Telugu/Tamil versions combined will make huge money just during 5 days in US. Even Indian audience got no choice and watching Badhaai Ho again, Lol. I don’t know what’s harm in moving up the release week earlier if the first movie disappoints and out of theaters by then.

    • Another prediction:

The major issue arises, does Robot 2 has the potential to battle with the records of Bahubali, Dangal. Robot 2 is coming with a budget of 450 Cr. in two languages, that is Hindi and Tamil. The Hindi version will cover 3500 screens while the Tamil version is about to cover 2500 Screens. Total 6000 Screens covered by the movie.

The presence of Akshay Kumar assures that the movie will get a huge gathering for Hindi version. On the other hand, the Tamil version will also gather a large number of people because of the presence of Rajinikanth. Keeping all the point in mind, it is figuring out that, like Bahubali and Dangal, Robot 2 has the power to cross 1500 Cr. mark worldwide.

      Robot 2: Day 1 Collection
Akshay Kumar is back in a negative role, and all his fans are just waiting to see him playing the role. Akshay Kumar’s crewman look was just a sign when people would view him on the big screen the whole scene; all will be left the open mouth. All the sign of positive vibes showing us that the film will easily cross 30 Cr(Hindi version) on the first opening day. Including all the versions Robot 2 first day collection will be range from 100 to 120 Cr.

      Robot 2: Day 2 Collection
I believe that people can’t miss the film. All tickets will be sold out. This shows that the second day will also be a good one. The film earns a total of 80-90 Cr.

      Robot 2: Day 3 Collection
Director of the movie S. Shankar never gave a flop film. When it comes to direction, he brought the best. As he is also the writer of the movie, he inked all his imagination. The third day will too rock, collection range from 90-100 Cr.

      Robot 2: Day 4 Collection
The maximum shooting of the film is done in India. Most of the sets are in Chennai. Just a minimum shooting was on foreign. The science fiction movie will react magic on Box office since those areas of overseas are yet not shown in any scene of other movies. This will create a large gather. The fourth day earning of the will be range from 121 to 130 Cr.

Within the first week, the movie will collect its principle. Further oversea release are yet to count. Therefore, it can be concluded the movie will rule at the box office.

  78. Here’s Why Akshay Kumar & Rajinikanth’s 2.0 Is Already A BLOCKBUSTER Before Release!
When the teaser of 2.0 was out a couple of months ago, many started criticising it for not upto the mark VFX.
    By Umesh Punwani –

Earlier this month the makers launched the trailer, which also was welcomed by a mixed response. It was trolled for its mega-budget of 550 crores+ but no one realised this is just a 2 minute clip from a 148 minutes movie. In this age of ‘judging’ things, people jumped to compare this with other Hollywood biggies but no one realised the film is yet to release.

People! This isn’t your usual Bollywood flick which requires some picturesque locations, a party song or an item song, a few crores of a budget and mediocre writing – this is above & beyond every of those things. 2.0 is a magnum opus on which there have been towering efforts of thousands & even without seeing it, I would say it’s already a blockbuster in my mind. Not just because it’s breaking the usual norm of Bollywood but because it’s giving us something ‘new’ and that too at a scale which no one ever has even dared to think.

I know, that contradicts my above statements and I’m also judging before the release but from whatever I’ve seen in the trailer – I’m sure we’re in for something new & crazy. Also, according to my close sources 2.0 is a massive entertainer & it’s commercial from the word go. With backing of the best VFX seen in Bollywood, it delivers a very entertaining story with crispy screenplay.

Bottomline of the article is, it’s not at all easy what Shankar, Rajinikanth & Akshay Kumar have done with 2.0. So, yes, for me it’s already a blockbuster but for those who didn’t like the trailer let’s wait for the movie and decide together?

  80. BOI not too confident of 2.0 or Zero either …

    ************

    Q. Which film will open better? 2.0 or Zero and how many screens will they release on?.

    A. That is difficult to tell as both will be in that 25 crore nett plus range. 30 crore nett will be the target for both but will be tough as Zero is not the killer initial type of film from the trailer even though it has Shahrukh Khan. 2.0 (Hindi) is a huge initial film but will have 12% business missing due to regional versions and on top most of the film is dubbed in Tamil with only Akshay Kumar speaking most of his lines in Hindi which will be dubbed in the Tamil version. If that South business was not missing for 2.0 (Hindi) then you would give the edge to 2.0 but now either can have the higher first day. The screen issue is not that important for Zero as its about getting that 45-50 crore capacity at the 900 multiplexes like Thugs of Hindustan. Then it will have the good collecting single screens, it does not matter if it does not go down to the Nampur’s, Neera’s, Nawabganj’s or Nagina’s of the country. 2500 multiplex screens and 1500 single screens will do nicely for Zero. The other 600-800 single screens will have very limited collections. 2.0 can do with a 5000 screen release but places like Nagarkurnool or Narsapur in Andhra or Nagarthpet in Mysore will not release the Hindi versions while a film like Race 3 releases in these places and gets decent collections also. The Hindi version can go to a little over 4000 screens on a best case scenario.
