      • So you have a remake of ONDU MOTTEYA KATHE [An Egg’s story]. That was a gem of a film. From this trailer, it looks like they have messed up royally and have made it vulgar. Here’s the original film’s trailer;

Terrific film; it was on NETFLIX, am not sure if it is available now…

        • Thanks for sharing. ONDU MOTTEYA KATHE has a genuine person rather than a wig worn star who looks cartoonish. It is ok in a movie like Housefull 4 which is not made around the egg headedness but here you needed a more genuine character.

Dialogs are regional and usually real. Problem with hindi films are that it has been deeply censored over the years and even something as banal as “Z****T ka baal” evokes a laughter because you don’t see it often on screen.

I may still like Ayushmann’s movie more.

But if you have heard something then there’s no smoke without fire. But I am a bit superstitious. So wait a little longer.” When questioned if he will be doing the film with Aamir, Saif Ali Khan shrugs. Aamir Khan recently took to his social media handle to praise the trailer of Saif Ali Khan’s upcoming film Laal Kaptaan.

      • Aamir would be really under pressure from his assurance to TSeries if he doesn’t do Vikram Vedha’s remake after LSC.

Moghul shall not be a better choice, esp after making the presumably epic LSC based on a lifetime story. Moghul will at best, be similar in genre.

Anyways, Aamir seems to be on a mission to come out of ToH debacle. Will have 3 releases in next 3 years – LSC, VV & Mogul.

Caught up with Super Deluxe lately. What a film. Astonishing performances and a perfectly paced, introspective film about gender identity, righteousness, religious beliefs, and so much more, yet it never becomes preachy. Just pretty solid writing.

I believe this should have been our Oscar entry instead of the highly overrated Gully Boy

    • I liked Super Deluxe but it’s not, by any means, a great film. The quirkiness is fine but the ‘pop philosophy’ in the end literally makes no sense.

Essentially, it’s a “woke” film — just like Gully Boy or Kumbalangi Nights. The central theme being acceptance. Or tolerance, if acceptance doesn’t come to pass.

People should accept others as they are — be it porn stars, transvestites or even aliens.

Nothing wrong with the message per se, but the direction and the film’s episodic, intersecting nature has been done to death by a ton of Hispanic filmmakers before. See Innaritu or Guillermo del Toro, for instance.

Having said that, this was my first look at Fahadh Faasil and I was mighty impressed. Loved his performance in Kumbalangi Nights too.

      • Wasn’t too impressed with Kumarraja’s Aaranya Kaandam either. It was a decent watch, sure, but turned out to be a damp squib — compared to the reputation it enjoys amongst cine enthusiasts.

Quite liked Vada Chennai, overall, but that too became silly towards the end. There was no need to bow to Dhanush’s fan following and make him a Rajni avatar.

Vetri Maran’s Visaranai stayed true to its spirit till the very end. And it remains his best film to date. A harrowing but terrific watch.

  9. Dream Girl Fourth Week Collections
    Friday 11 October 2019 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dream Girl collected 4.50 crore nett in week four which is a big drop from the third week but that was always likely due to the release of War. The film has so far collected 134 crore nett plus and it could continue to collect till the release of Housefull 4 on Diwali.

The film has no chance to beat the numbers of Chhichhore which but it will cross the numbers of Badhaai Ho which just a few lakhs ahead at 134.46 crore nett but the GROSS numbers of Badhaai Ho will remain far ahead and that film was also a bigger hit Overseas. Dream Girl should be able to add 2-4 crore nett business from here on. The collections of Dream Girl till date are as follows.

    Week One – 70,12,00,000

    Week Two – 38,69,00,000

    Week Three – 21,06,00,000

    Week Four – 4,50,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 1,34,37,00,000 apprx

Bachchan for a long time standing was a one-man industry, and no one ever came close. Jeetendra in one of his interviews in his heydays (when he was called a Bachchan successor and No. 2 in the industry) said, “if he’s no.1, I am No. 11 and there’s no one in between.” Truer words have rarely been spoken on hindi cinema. There was a big gap between him and the rest, and that includes the likes of Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, Rishi Kapoor, etc. who would struggle for the No. 2 position.

Even when he came back after a break in the 90s, his films like Mrityudaata and Aaj ka Arjun took bumper openings when the Khans were ruling the roost. IMO the cracks in his BO appeal and audience expectations began to show only after the release of Lal Badshah. The public was simply not interested in Bachchan as a leading star (well, maybe if his script selection was stronger and not dependent on the likes of Bokadia and Mehul Kumar) By then the younger audience had started throbbing the cinemas, and multiplexes had arrived. However, he was quick to realize it and move ahead with the times with KBC and Mohabbatein.

Parallels were often drawn with SRK but while Bachchan had been sensible enough to pick roles suiting his age in the latter half of his career, the former have been trying very hard in staying relevant. It might have something to do with competing with the younger lot and the constant need for recognition in a leading role.

    • SRK was too busy chasing Bachchan and forgot about Aamir and Salman. Then a new generation arrived with Ranbir, Ranveer etc and Hrithik is back too. SRK got stuck between past, present or future.

And Bachchan has been able to indulge younger directors, older too to stay relevant.

SRK will be back. He is naturally more talented among the Khans. This break will make him more relevant when he return and for longer time. And when he returns, he will be like never before.

SRK will be back I’m sure but the landscape will have changed a lot. Just hope he doesn’t come back with KJo or YRF. And he should ignore pressure of box office. Just do a decent movie.

Comparing to contemporary is fine but always chasing a previous generations success is pointless.

Remember all those articles comparing SRK to Bachchan on NG? That is a distant memory now.

        • SRK hammered the romcom genre to such an extent in the 90’s that his fanbase, esp female fanbase could not see him as anything except a Raj or Rahul. Once in his mid 40’s, younger stars were bound to take over romcom & SRK unfortunately was neither able to mold himself to action nor does he have the script sense of an Aamir. Even though he’s versatile enough, the lack of focus on anything except romance in his hey day has stereotyped him to a point of no return. The only way he can come back is via a niche film with limited target audience (like a gully boy or s30) but that’s not the stuff that will re establish his stardom.

      • SRK never forgot about Aamir/Salman. However he kept pushing his PR machinery to make him the new Bachchan ASAP since he was losing time. I don’t think he thought Aamir or Salman will be even relevant well into 50s. It just the way things turned out was totally unexpected by him and by many. Bachchan is 77 and is still working. AB didn’t make a comeback in 50s to regain lost pride. He needed money. SRK doesn’t need money but…

Directors like Tinnu Anand and KC Bokadia did their last and worst film with Amitabh when he returned back with Mrityudaata and Laal Baadshah.

Amitabh’s magic started again with KBC. He lit the television after Mahabharat. Esp KBC 1 and 2 had record TRP i think. He make night shows of cinemas irrelevant and many movies suffered and then recovered business over the weekend when KBC didn’t come.

Mohabbatein/K3G/Waqt were ok and Khakhee goos, but his real blockbuster was with Baaghbaan. What a movie…BigB was born in real sense. From then on he has never looked back.

Now i think he is experimenting with different genres. If i am producer, i will have him in every movie. He will kill it as antagonist in Dhoom 4. He can be the perfect hero for Rajamouli and Hirani. Unfortunately Indian directors lack the vision needed to tap BigB. If he had been in hollywood, he would have been ahead of Clooney, and RDJ.

    • The problem definitely was Amitabh’s choices: Of all the people, of all the directors, he chose Mehul Kumar and K.C.Bokadia. He has Mani Ratnam, he even had Inder Kumar : And he went with these two. I think the issue was he simply lost track of things had changed in the past 5 years, when he was busy exploring life, staying alone in NYC making omlettes for himself and grocery-shopping, trying to lead an ordinary life; with the so-called ‘new’ Khan blood taking over. 1997 was post Bombay movie and Roja; things had changed. Mani and the south had taken over. Occasionally, you had great psycho-dramas like Nana’s YESHWANT [I still remember the theater going wild with Nana’a dialogue: Har ek ko biriyani khilaoonga toh mein bhooka mar jaaonga] or AGNISAKSHI. Nana wouldn’t admit it, but was still carrying on the same masala blood that was encapsulated by Bachchan. [ For all that who don’t know, the original choice for Om’s ARDH SATYA was Bachchan; some issues happened and he wouldn’t be part of that film. Not that I repent it, that was performance of the century by Om.]

The craze for AGNEEPATH was so unprecedented; that even Hollywood reviewers were praising this act; in spite of massive lift-offs from Scar-face. So maybe he thought the audience was still interested in the Amitabh of yore.

He was also involved with ABCL; so somewhere, he just didn’t realize that lot of hard work was needed at the script-level considering age taking his face down and society going toward family-dramas and love-stories.

The only one thing that I can say in his favor is that there really didn’t exist directors like you have now; Sujoy Ghosh, Vidhu, Sarcar, Raj Kumar Santohi [Santoshi was still busy with his muses Deol and Sheshadri]. So yes, he had to the art-house way, or stick with the Mehul’a and KC/s. And he chose the latter. Surely a bad choice. But yes, he has always had poor script sense. If it were not for the diamond-polishers like Salim/Javed, Sippy, Samanta, Mehra, Desai, Hrishikesh, Mukul Anand, I am not even sure if would have recognized this talent.

  12. BOI: War holds strong

War had a strong hold on its second Friday as it collected 6.25-6.50 crore nett and this is coming after the huge extended first week of 225 crore nett plus. The film is now set for a good run for the next two weeks and it is certain to be the highest grossing film of the year till now and could remain till the end of the year unless Housefull4 or Dabangg 3 better the numbers.

The film is now totally out of holiday period and the ratio of the circuits are normal. The hold in the North on the second Friday was very strong and despite the long first week it is still one of the better second Fridays. The weak competition in terms of new releases also helped the cause of the film.

The Sky Is Pink had a poor first day of 2.50 crore nett apprx and the jump in the evening was not that great. Despite Friday evenings not really being that good it can still show a good upturn on Saturday as its a film for high end multiplexes and they do best on Saturday but it has a lot of work to do from this start. These type of films have a very limited audience unless there is some sort of star presence which is not the case with this film.

The Joker is very strong recording a drop of just 10% from Thursday and should have collections in the 2.25 crore nett range which is not that far less than The Sky Is Pink on day eight and is actually better at the bigger multiplexes despite it being the tenth day of the film.

An interesting thing to note is despite the opening day/weekend/week records being broken left, right and center every 6 months or so, none of the film’s have been able to come close to Dangal’s lifetime total with the exception of Bahubali 2. BOI makes all these tall claims and runs out of adjectives in describing the BO performance of these so called hurricanes, but never acknowledges what Dangal achieved.
Meanwhile they’re still harping about Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai.
I suppose it’s only an Aamir film that will break his own record. My best bet isn’t Dhoom 4 or Sooryavanshi or Dabangg 3, but Lal Singh Chaddha

Current market economics suggests 400 cr grosser coming the way soon for a good film. Many films have had 200+ cr week one – Sanju, War, Sultan, TZH. With good content, a universally appealing film can double that and do 400 cr.

  16. Kabir Singh has collected around 278cr net. Uri and Simmba sailed way past the 200cr mark and made over 240cr net.

TZH last year was at over 340cr net. War will sail past the 300cr mark and go much beyond that in a few weeks.

Most of these are reasonably good films, but not classics as such.

The 400cr barrier does not seem that big a deal in the near future. It is going to be crossed very soon. LSC, I am quite confident will cross it. But I am also quite sure that a couple of films will go past that before.

The benchmark remains Bahubali 2. Breaking that record is another matter.

    Like

    • Dont think 400 cr is that easy even in near future. No Bollywood movie has done 350 cr yet, forget getting close to Dangal’s 387 cr. TZH and Sanju did well to match PK’s 340 cr. Sultan and Padmaavat managed to touch 300 cr mark. War seems trending like it will do the same.

I am skeptical of any 400 cr grossers before LSC releases (given the upcoming line-up). What is likely is a couple of 200 cr week one figures and 300 cr totals. Doubling that 200 cr week 1 is no joke. Will need Dangal level og WOM to do so.

      Like

      • Post GST & major taxation changes over the last year would ensure even a Sultan or Tiger Zinda Hai level performance is good enough for a 400 Cr nett. A Dangal would easily cross 450 or might even close in on 500 while a BB2 kinda performance would cruise past 600 Cr in today’s market and ticket rates.

A well written, exceptionally well enacted psychological drama that’s bound to make u question your motives, meaning & entire existence. Although the screenplay’s a little tedious and with a few loopholes (Fleck mamages to comfortable escape every time he commits a murder without anyone noticing), its a movie worth watching, relishing & thinking about even after you’re done watching it. Heath Ledger’s Joker now suddenly seems to have a much bigger reason if this is how he began (although he’d be a 50 year old in Nolan’s film if we assume him to be Fleck). 4/5

Thursday night, at 12: 30 pm, I am three-quarters asleep when there is a maniacal pounding of fists on the main door. Open it groggily, half-awake, to find a member of the Los Angeles Police Department saying “You have to evacuate now, there is a brush fire coming this way.”
We take whatever we can think of, in that half-awake state, passports and a yellow box wherein I keep my important documents, and get into our cars. Nothing else, no clothes, no food, nothing.
By this time, there is pandemonium, our silent gated community has flashing cop cars all around like an episode of Cops, the winds are howling, and I am still not thinking straight.
My daughter is crying now, for her school certificates for good performance, from souvenirs of her old school in Maryland, the Harry Potter book collection that is her favorite, and I am trying to tell her I will get everything replaced, not to worry, nothing is indispensable, but I am breaking inside, I should have taken some of her artwork, not for her, because she will of course forget this as more memories will pile on top, but not me, and I feel this immense crushing sense of guilt—I should have been better prepared.

ps – Something similar he did was in Earth 1947 or to some degree Fanna…

    • Very good decision. Am glad Aamir is “listening” to his fans now. VV’s remake will be Blockbuster. I am already excited. A thriller and India’s own Face off with more dramatic twists and turns.
What we had wanted from ToH we will get it from VV’s remake.
I am happy for Saif too. He was in danger to become a Netflix only star, but now now.

Mogul – If Akshay has rejected Mogul because of script loopholes, there has to be a reason. He was offered a price which was unthinkable. But he still chose not to do and this is before the director Subhash Kashyap got into #MeToo. Remember both worked in a brilliant Jolly LLB2 in 2017-18. So it was not a question of director either. Most directors do 3-4 movies with Akshay at a stretch, each becoming better and bigger than previous. But this time Akshay returned the signing amount which he has rarely done and that too to T-Series.
Movies on biopics need not be made for everyone just because the person became successful in business. Also not when there are many iconic characters like Prithviraj Chauhan on offer.

      • Ohh and i forgot to add, no star will reject Aamir’s offer when he is one of the producers for a movie, and definitely not Akshay who had selflessly given his best actor filmfare award to Aamir.
So unless the script is beyond repair or has serious moral issues, Akshay would never have rejected it again.
