  4. I feel ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ is such an iconic song. What a fantastic orchestration by Laxmikant-–Pyarelal and the world has danced to this colourful tune for years now. It’s a beautiful song written by Anand Bakshi and performed by Madhuri Dixit and Neena Gupta. They say it’s a new thing to reach out to the younger generation. But why should we? That’s what I feel. You don’t have to give them what they are looking for. Why can’t they just create their own number? Young directors should create energetic, powerful songs that will be liked by the younger generation. Even DJs spoil all the songs by recreating them.”

Yet again another movie where one can predict a movie will take a decent opening based on BMS trend.

BMCM is going to surprise/shock the industry if the pattern continues.

The BMCM trailer has fewer views than even Crew which is apalling. BMS is also low. Not sure why the samosa critics saying it’s positive response all over and exhibitors, public excited.

      • BMCM needs couple of good songs (nobody pays enough attention these days)..proceedings in the movie, have been done so many times and with access to Hollywood offerings, there is nothing new; you need a good cut trailer and/or songs to generate buzz (when the game is all about it for such genre).

pedestrian humour that falls flat for much of the first half. The second half is better and the film salvages itself somewhat later as the story develops and you begin to care for the characters. the film enters the lock, stock and two smoking barrels/delhi belly mode.
its a hit and miss comedy that is timepass at best. The reviews have been largely misleading and they made it sound as if it were a modern day masterpiece comedy.

Having said that, comedy genre is quite varied; something which is repulsive to some (say scatalogical humor) could be liked by others. Jay’s favorite movie is Zoolander; I didn’t mind “hot tub time machine” or loved “Bahut Hua Samman”.

I prefer that to those crappy attempts from Bollywood to copy from there using vastly inferior and cheaper CGI. Kareena looks like an old hag these days and is as scary as any Godzilla, if not more off putting! Crew’s trailer looks terrible, so it’s not like something like Article 370 releasing there, so I am not missing out on anything there. They copied the basic premise some crappy Latin telenovela here, with the theme of 3 crew women in danger, someone had pointed out to me. That’s what Bollywood usually dish out to us these days.

        • Yes.. and 669 versions of hideous creatures with 438 sequels is a lot of originality from Holly Molly. Not entirely unexpected when you start passing judgements based on trailers without watching the film itself. Case in point, a fictionalized version of Pulwama attacks being a Top Gun copy since the IAF does not have pilots who can do a cobra manoeuvre unlike uncle Sam 🤦‍♂️

        • No point in this antagonistic comment. People have opinion and taste which you don’t agree with and there could be elements of hypocrisy (everyone has some especially with their favorite star is in question) but it is their opinion. Just because someone watches Nolan or Martin Scorsese doesn’t make their opinion better than who those watches Shaitaan or Pathaan.

I am not going to watch both movies (Crew and Godzilla vs KingKong) but on TV, if both are offered and I have to try; I will try Godzilla (even though I didn’t finish the first one).

Fine. The mere sequence in the 2021 film of the fight in the ocean between the 2 creatures is worth a view in the cinemas.

There was no allusion to Fighter in my post. Did you feel Fighter was being targeted when I talked about cheap copies with vastly inferior CGIs compared to these Hollywood mega productions?

          Like

        • And Avatar 2 earned billions while Hollywood invests 20x in their CGI compared to India’s films and perhaps 10x of Chinese films as well. So? Godzilla Thong box office is none of my concern. Its an idi0tic film and as pointless as the dozen sequels the creatively bankrupt Holly makes every year. Good on you for liking this stuff. Lets not even get into reviewers unless you’re juvenile enough to swear by them.

        • To each his own. You see Godzilla as B Grade but Fighter or Crew as masterpiece. I respect your choice. I found Fighter decent, especially taking into account Bollywoods’s usual standard, but that’s it. It is a wanna be Hollywood film like all Sid Anand films, but slightly better in that respect. I am only referring to Fighter as you brought it up as soon as I talked about cheap copies and inferior CGI. I never alluded to it in the first place.
I would still take desi thrillers like Baby over these wanna be Hollywood films. This year overall, i would take Article 370 over anything Hollywood or Bollywood has offered. It is a hard hitting film, fitting of Hindi cinema.

If it is about stunts, CGI and great action films, I would go for the superior quality ones like MI or Fast n Furious or Top Gun which are infinitely better in those respects. As for Godzilla, I found it mildly entertaining. A big screen watch for the visuals snd canvas. That’s it.

As for Fighter, I did not even mention it ij my first comment. You leaped onto its defence as you felt I alluded to it when I referred to it when I talked about cheap copies with inferior CGIs, when I had not given a thought about it, really. Who cares about Fighter? It is an underperformer by every means and even you call it a mere good commercial film. For me it is rightly that as well, especially in terms of usual low Bollywood standard these days. Why all the constant cry over an underperformer then? It is one, just ss others. Let’s get over it and move on.

For me it is rightly that as well, especially in terms of usual low Bollywood standard these days. Why all the constant cry over an underperformer then?” – because a film’s merits are not measured in terms of box office results, especially one that finds dedicated following over a long period of time. We’ve had similar underperformers (and some rank flops) like Hera Pheri, Lakshya, Swades and films like Kala Patthar, The Burning Train & Shakti in the past with similar underwhelming box office results and we all know what they’re considered to be today.

    The Fabelmans:

A film that works better as a poignant family drama than one that chronicles the early years of one of the most celebrated movie directors of all time. The internet and Spielberg himself call it ‘semi-autobiographical’, but it has less to do with the protagonist’s tryst with movie-making and more with the emotional struggles of being in a family with the mother wanting to move on and being picked on at the new school, where being the only Jewish kid draws attention and bullies …

The best and the most exciting portions of the film were the first fifteen minutes, where a young Sammy Fabelman, initially skeptical of walking in a dark theatre to watch his first movie, has his life turned upside down as he sits wonder-eyed and mesmerised at the spectacular action of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, unable to get it out of his mind days afterward. And then begins his obsession with the movie camera …

While Spielberg doesn’t miss a note in extracting great performances (a fabulous Michelle Williams as a free-spirited and guilt-ridden woman) and directing each scene with aplomb, considering the auteur he is, I had a slightly different set of expectations, with the ‘film trivia’ fan in me getting a rush of excitement only in scenes where Sammy discovers and slowly perfects the craft of movie-making. This doesn’t play like a typical an underdog tale. There aren’t any villains or any major conflicts; it is the less-than-perfect family life of a man who discovers the extremely gifted and skilled artist in him at the onset, and who doesn’t stop pursuing his passion for anything.

The final ten minutes are a hoot, as the budding director, about to embark on his movie-making journey professionally, ends up in the same room as the celebrated and eccentric director John Ford (played by another celebrated director with a cult following), and receives a rather valuable advice on shot selection.

    Charming!

The destruction of traditional values and adoption of such alternate lifestyles is the biggest reason why some of the richest nations in the world also tend to be the most depressed. Add hatred of capitalism, victim mentality and an utter lack of accountability to the mix, and you are dealing with a collective ticking bomb of utter commotion and anarchy. And the political left exacerbates an already hopeless situation by continuously reinforcing the victimhood of minorities, whether religious, racial or gender-based.

Elon Musk has been quiet and rightfully vocal on twitter about the recent surge of illegal migrants from Latin America, many of them being dangerous criminals. A clueless and often dangerous politician on the left, Alexandria Occasia Cortez (popularly known as AOC), clapped back, and replied to him that he is also literally an immigrant. Of course the fact that he is a legal immigrant who contributes billions to the American economy is lost on her, but that’s just how corrupted the discourse is.

Israel is always the bad guy for the left but they will never talk about the number of times Muslim countries have tried to attack them, only to be destroyed over and over again. The big complaint – really is – why don’t they let us win?

And it appears that a scary amount of Indian youth, inspired by such idiocy from the west, are following the same path.

Before Kalki or any other religious prophesy on the destruction of the world becomes reality, the Left alone will assure the world comes to an end.

not that I’m interested in the far left, either. I prefer a moderate approach. I know that Muzlum communities in India also prefer to form ghettos wherever they live and have their own people in their societies.. However, the moment someone outside our country treats us the way we treat our own people, we form close bonds with people from all sects. Tabhi jaag uthta hai Indian humara.

They might believe that by belittling others, they can make themselves feel more significant or superior. However, this mindset is harmful because it fails to recognize the worth and uniqueness of each person.

By disregarding others as insignificant, individuals with this mentality miss out on the opportunity to connect with and learn from others. They also perpetuate a cycle of negativity and exclusion, which can lead to strained relationships and a lack of empathy.

In contrast, it’s important to recognize and appreciate the diversity and value that each person brings to the table. Embracing empathy and understanding helps create a more inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

    Boxofficeindia.com

The pre-release hype for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is red hot all over and the opening day records are going to fall. Whether it can break open Jawan’s 65 cr opening needs to be seen but i looks to challenge that with above 60 crore opening just based on the limited advance booking opened in worldwide stage. The craze of Indian boxoffice is unprecedented and trend setter.

The Hindi version will see new records in South India circuits with Nizam / Andhra leading the way but that pre-Eid factor will probably keep it below Jawan opening record opening in most of the Hindi circuits though it will challenge or go past releases like Pathaan and Animal. The initial of the film is a huge boost to the struggling film industry and shows the potential of superstar Akshay Kumar’s when the product is correct.

The film will be seen as the comeback of Akshay Kumar but that is not really the case as the stardom always remained intact and it was about the right film and BMCM ticked the right boxes as numbers were going to be hard with the traditional Akshay Kumar patriotic or social genre. It would have been great had he done this type of action film in the last few years decade but it was not be. The importance of genre cannot be undermined and it makes a huge difference. There is a tendency in the fillm industry to go to that VFX action side but its the ‘real’ action that the audience runs to watch and if music and correct casting is there then the sky is the limit.

Akshay Kumar has had many bumper openings and record openings before but with BMCM, it’s right at the top in his filmography.

Tiger Shroff will also gain by this opening and by riding on superstar Akshay Kumar’s back and get a new lease of life which can prolong his career. He needs to continue the momentum post this movie and choose films wisely but he’s not as versatile as superstar Akshay Kumar, so the results will not be the same.

Finally, the industry is exuberant to get back their favorite superstar back in the reckoning as he’s a mini industry himself in the rat race of superstars and he’s far apart from any other stars currently in India.

  25. Merry Christmas (FLOP) – A mystery thriller film with vey little for theatres and a film that would only do well in Mumbai city even if liked. These sort of filsmswill be available in hundreds for audiences on television at home.

Fighter (AVERAGE) – The film is the highest grosser of the year but could not fair well in mass circuits. Its not about the planes or anything but the landscape has changed in these areas and its about raw and rustic films driven by the storylines rather than Hollywood type of action. Tiger 3 also had a similar struggle and Hollywood films are finding it tough going in the Hindi circuits. Fighter had stars and music but the appeal remained limited and its a lot to do with how much these mass circuits have changed post pandemic. If we take the fact that it did not release in Gulf then there was an outperfomance overseas but the final number does not suggest that as its without Gulf.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Ulja Jiya (SEMI HIT) – The film did very well for its genre driven by the music. The music was not blockbuster but the fact that it had music and it was good enough which is more than what most films have. The was pushed by the buy one get one offfer but it does look that offers will not help if the audience is not with the so the benefit of the offer is probably very limited.

Article 370 (HIT) – The first HIT of the year which proved a SUPER HIT in Mumbai circuit. The film did extremely well for its budget but it was a costly acquisition and with streaming likely to be in house it was about India theatrical for recovery but the film actually pulled it of very well.

Crakk (DISASTER) – The heavily budget action film for the face value but this sort of action content is just not relatable to the mass centres where it has to score

Laapata Ladies (FLOP) – A ladies film looking by its name and which has trended well in its run holidng well every week but it just could not find much of an audience. The trending of the film can be called respectable but that hardly matters when there are no overall numbers.

Shaitaan (HIT) – The true bonafide HIT of the first quarter which did well all over. The film was a psychological / horror film but the family sentiments worked strongly for the film. The box office today is about reaching the mass so basically back to the 80’s and what happened here was when the big budgets were not there the films catering to family sentiments emerged winners at the box office. Today any genre will work as long as it has these family sentiments as this is where the reach will come from. Shaitaan was devoid of music which is the other way to push the reach but still did the trick.

Yodha (FLOP) – A urban action film on a hijacking and when a Fighter struggled for reach with the mass audiences it was always going to be tough for this film. Action films made in Hindi for urban audiences have never done well although there maybe some exceptions but those will be very few if any.

Madgaon Express (FLOP) – A Goa holiday / trip film which pretty much seals the fate in most of the country with the trailer itself. For some reason the indsutry actually had hope for the film. The film did better in Mumbai circuit but even there the numbers were still poor, Rest was very dull.

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (FLOP) – A film on a Maharashtrian political figure which had no scope outside Maharashtra. The credit is that it will do around 15 crore nett in the state of Maharashtra which means some sort of acceptance here but its a HIndi film and rest of India is extremely dull with practically no collections.

Crew (SEMI HIT / AVERAGE) – The last release of the quarter which has done pretty well. The film has scored very well in North (NCR and East Punjab) and along with Shaitaan is the only other film to do so. The film will have shortened run  due to Eid which will hold back the numbers but a decent run nevertheless and an out performer in Overseas.

    https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?articleid=8418

So the “Hollywoodized” action of Pathaan works wonder but the same does not with a dull, Pakistan military obsessed lousy film like Tiger 3 or a highly stylised urban thriller like Fighter that’d work only on high end screens as per their absurd & hilarious logic. So Adi Chopra is a fool to invest billions on the spy franchise since apparently the boi editors know better.. bravo!

Ramayana is by far Hindi cinema’s biggest project right now. The star cast is getting only bigger. With Yash and Sai Pallavi in there, it becomes a pan Indian film. From what I have gathered, it is a 3 parts film, with the first part focusing on the earlier years on Lord Ram until the abduction of Goddess Sita, Reportedly, Yash will appear in the final portions, and Sunny Deol will make his appearance in the very end of Part 1.

Ideally, someone like Rajamouli should have directed it. He masters those epics quite well in Indian cinema context, by blending in emotions and drama with his creative imagination. No one beats him there. I don’t know if Tiwari can pull it off. Adipurush was a total let-down in every aspect.

On the other hand, Ranbir has a tremendous line-up, with this one and the SLB film, and the Animal sequel.

Sunny Deol is very much back in the reckoning as well. He has really cashed in from Gadar’s success last year. Last night, I read that his upcoming line-up is Lahore, Ramayana, Border 2, a Mythri Production/Gopichand big budget action film, and finally with Gadar 3 launching next year.

It seems every time a big project is announced or is in talks, many of us want Rajamouli to direct it. as if every other director in India is nalla and no one other than Rajamouli should be given a chance. If we had our way, would we expect him to want him to make 10 movies in 2 years, all on a massive grand scale?

I agree he has reached dizzying levels of success but to be honest itna bhi koi great nahi hai jiski wajah se usko sar pe chadha do.

  30. I agree with you. However the allusion was only due the genre, and Bahubali is the modern benchmark there.

But it also shows the bankruptcy in Hindi cinema in terms of directors. For more than 2 decades, Hindi cinema groomed directors whose films would not find an audience beyond high end Mumbai multiplexes. They were content of the minimal success and audience. Which is why a major chunk of the audience turned towards south films as they were delivering rooted masala films they have been starved of. These small urban films are taking a beating at the BO these days every week.

However, that said, a director like Rohit Shetty has delivered consistently and more recently Aditya Dhar has showed tremendous promise.

Tiwari delivered Chhichhore after Dangal. I don’t know if a mythological film is his fort. I hope he delivers. Beyond the lavish sets, Rajamouli has the imagination to vision things and bring it to life on the screen. It is in those respect that Hindi cinema falters at times. It is too easy to directly lift scenes from South films, Korean films or Hollywood films. But, what makes great cinema is to come up with such creative vision yourself that can move huge audiences, transcending class and cultural divides.

    • Almost every so called imaginative scene in Rajmulli’s films are a lift from a dozen Hollywood films including the likes of Lotr, 300 etc. Blending them with desi mythological ethos is the primary talent the guy has apart from his retrograde masala sensibilities of the 80s.

    • Arun Govil as Dasharatha.
    • Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha.
    • Vijay Sethupathi as Vibhishan.
    • Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi.

      • Agree on this one. Sethupati as Raavana would have been great.
Both Prabhas and Saif were completely miscast in Aadipurush. They were both pathetic. But, I guess it was as much the director’s and writers incompetence.

Prabhas was in his element in Salaar. That is the territory he belongs to.

BMCM has sold 499 tickets so far

Maidaan has sold 4K so far

Maidaan opened before so maybe ahead so far

    Source – Sacnilk

BMS will trend only if they sell 1K an hour so nothing happening there.

    • No movement for BMCM. Can’t blame producers as they have produced and marketed well and if this doesn’t open good then Akki’s stardom is seriously impacted and gone. Male Kangana but not at that level yet.

    • Bmcm needs at least 5-6 Cr advance to have a shot at an 18 Cr opening. Next few days are crucial, perhaps a 2nd trailer or snippets. Maidaan might be good but too niche & soccer isn’t popular in India beyond the 6 major metros +Goa/Kerala. 100-150 Cr finish at best.

        • The budget is similar to Fighter. I don’t expect the word of mouth to be equal to Fighter to salvage an Average verdict after a poor initial. As of now, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has Flop/Disaster written all over it. Maidaan still has chances of repeating Shaitaan’s performance & being another ace up ADs sleeve.

        • its budget must be far bigger than fighter..I think crew advance of 3cr and 1 lac tickets seems to be the target for now

        • Some fans of the “Disaster Star of Millennium” movie might be feeling frustrated because they can’t accept the success of the BMCM remake. They feel this way because they want the new movie to fail, just because their favorite’s version didn’t do well. They don’t want anyone else to enjoy success with that title. Now, they’re so focused on this that they’re even supporting another movie, “Maidan,” which looks to be a potential disaster.

  36. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan And Maidaan Advances – Industry Heading For Rough WeekSunday 07 April 2024 10.00 ISTBox Office India Trade Network

The advances opened of Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan have begun to open over the last few days though both are still limited with very few properties open especially for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan which had a later start.

So in this case the numbers of tickets sold will not tell where the advances are heading but it can be clearly seen that the interest in the films is no where what it should be as the cinemas opening advances should see a better response. As the advances open they will get faster but thats just because of more properties but the reponse in those properties will be pretty much the same as in the properties open.

The units of both films have not been able to generate the interest they should have and now on top its looks like Eid may well fall in India on Thursday. Here maybe the makers of both films should have been on the ball more as because as soon as they got hint of this they could have pushed the release to Thursday which is a national holiday and would have been the safer bet. As the box office is not seeng the best of times its always best to be on the safe side even with the biggest of films. Now both films look like they could be releasing on a non holiday Wednesday.

The advances suggest a rough time ahead and it could be a very scary Wednesday where numbers are short of the lowest expectatations for both films though if Eid somehow falls on Wednesday then maybe it will look better on the day. The national holiday will come on Thursday and that will be the biggest hope for the films as there can be momentum if there is some merit to the films.

This is not the way it should be for big films especially Bade Miyan Chote Miyan as these films are made to start with a bang. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has better advances than Maidaan but that hardly matters in the overall picture as both films are totally dependent on reports for the Eid push.

I don’t know what others feel but Akshay’s best phase was the one where he did a slew of Priyadarshan comedies without being too ambitious about their box office returns. The deshbhakti keeda killed his natural talent for comedy. With the exception of Baby, I find most of his other films in the last 10 years underwhelming. Rowdy Rathore’s action comedy also worked to an extent. Maybe he should return to that genre.

    • Not surprising at all. Crew actually might have done the best advance of the three. Maidaan can be exempted as it is clearly a different kind of movie.

But a 350cr production beaten up by 3 heroine movie will be something. A double digit start can be assured for BMCM only if it matches Crew advance OR if Eid falls on Wed.

      Like

      • The makers have to be out of their mind to release BMCM on a working day. That Pathaan and Jawaan kind of release is actually a very risky release and can work only if there is genuine buzz for your movie for Day 1 and if your product is good enough to use the second day holiday.

An Eid release would have given better advances and maybe a shot at 20cr start without any WOM.

Now Eid has become a WOM day with this substandard start on Wed and if by chance Its bad and maidaan is good, the national holiday will end up favoring Maidaan.

BMCM by its trailor does look like a proper costly movie and could have avoided this blunder specially once they realize that there is no buzz

The All bollywood review actually giving 4 star to Maidaan and 3.5 to BMCM doesnt augur well at all, they are one site who rarely give a less than 4 star rating to anyone, no idea if they r genuine but they seem to be getting some stuff right here and there over last year or so

Crew was definitely a good surprise. Happy that a women-only film opened to such a good response. Might encourage more filmmakers to invest more into such subjects than into male star-obsessed vehicles ad nauseum, an overwhelming majority of which are turning out a damp squib.

For Maidaan it is 26L and 69L

Looks like most seats in morning and afternoon are just blocked and no advance hence it is easier for BMCM to move to paid premier then
