The movie of the year for me in last quarter. Awesome star cast.
We all know about the love-hate relationship these two celebrated filmmakers share with each other. Ram Gopal Varma, in one of his interviews, had once said that he loves Karan and Karan hates him. Trust RGV to say that.
Anyways, looks like the directors have let bygones be bygones. Karan Johar released the first teaser of his upcoming romantic drama, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ this morning and the entire industry is going gaga over the first look. And RGV too is no exception. The maverick filmmaker, praising the teaser of the film, tweeted, “@karanjohar I love the long hold on Ranbir’s close up ..it indicates with what passion u made this film..Suuuuperrb.”
Karan too immediately responded in the warmest way possible. Thanking Varma, KJo tweeted, “Ramu!!! I think you have just made my day!!!” Well, it didn’t stop here. Ramu replied to Karan’s tweet saying, “And u made many many many people’s days with this God awesome feel in ur teaser #ADHMTeaser.”
Come on! Can KJo come up with something other than a love story? This seems like yet another run of the mill crap that we have seen before…. Nothing new here. Shivay, not sure how the movie would turn out to be, has perhaps one of the best hindi trailer I have ever seen. I am really hoping that Shivay blows ADHM out of the water.
It’s not about pleasing folks like me…it’s about trying something different for once! I am not a Devgan fan but at least he is trying something different than his usual over the top Rohit Shetty action and comedy.
“I am not a Devgan fan but at least he is trying something different than his usual over the top Rohit Shetty action and comedy.”
Lol. So, its great that Devgn missed this Diwali with Rohit Shetty but he will be back next Diwail with Rohit for Golmaal 4. Why specific for this movie then? This is Devgn’s time to prove or generate a hit outside Rohit and Karan went away from his formula for last 2 movies and now he’s coming back to his style. So, it is also different for him, but just not new territory. Also, Devgn is not seeking new territory.. just placing the action movie in a bigger setting with foreign crew and locations.
Reminds me of KANK. There are romantic moments, loads of candy floss and some moments of passion and outbursts.
Remember the heated arguments scenes between Abhishek and Rani. They were the only good things about KANK. The problem was that in that movie there were 2 such good scenes in 3 hours of boredom.
The rest was tedious and watching Rani cry bucket-loads of tears made it such a painful watch.
I hope Karan Johar cuts out those long, boring moments and trims the current movie to a slick 2 hours mature love story.
Another 3 hours long tedious, boring affair..expect the movie to drown. A quicker narrative, a shorter movie than KANK and plenty of moments like that Ranbir close up RGV is talking about.. then it may be a worthwhile watch.
There should be more fire and fury than bucket loads of tears. But knowing KJo’s kind of cinema, we may be praying for a mini-miracle here.
Wow! Look at the exaltation all over the net for a regular romantic triangle for a movie! The issue is not if first look / teaser /trailer are good but the exaggerations all over the place. What it is clearly known is the cast includes ‘two actors’ who are driven solely by their PR machinery until now & top that with KJO brand of marketing.
What the fuck has Aishwarya movie done in a long time?? Let her come on screen & deliver a dialogue and let the audience respond, then we can all judge where is this movie heading……and same with Ranbir who just keeps appearing in these coming of age and feeling torn apart movies umpteenth time…..talk about versatility !!
What is troublesome is for fuck sake we have to live with freakin 2 months of this hyperbole / excesses but like it has happened earlier with actual release it all comes down with a thud! Not long ago BV was projected to be India’s Gone with The Wind…… Besharam , Tamasha , and very recently Jazba is happening all over again if one wishes to compare the overstatements !
Bombay Velvet is my Titanic or Gone with the Wind: Ranbir Kapoor…
I kinda agree that the reaction is a bit over the top to the teaser. The teaser is very good though for the genre and the song is just awesome. I hope KJo is in form though. KJo is surely talented and captures drama in the background of love very well. But he has never concentrated on its strength and goes haywire too often. His first three outings were quite good though but also decreasing in terms of quality. MNIK was very poor if you exclude the performances. And SOTY I am sure didn’t take much writing from him…
I wasn’t taking a position on the trailer (I think it’s fine unless one expects Ratnam from Johar.. and while Shivaay is an effective trailer all things considered Johar’s is still easily the ‘better’ trailer.. Shivaay focuses on a couple of actions sequences, the plot seems very vague and the voiceover is terrible.. yes outside the multiplexes Shivaay has an edge but these films fade fast if they don’t offer a good enough narrative.. getting back to Johar this easily a fresher trailer than KANK or MNIK.. not that this is a high bar) but I find it utterly hypocritical on MSDhoni’s part to talk about excessive reactions on the part of others when his own with respect to Salman would make Salim Khan blush. You can’t say ‘crazy is ok as long as it’s about Salman’! A lot of the utterly excessive reactions in this sense (and there have been others earlier with other stars) just don’t sound sane. One can be the biggest fan, one can even be a partisan but then there is the cult category where one is literally ‘high’ every time one thinks of one’s favorite star!
…and whats with Shivaay bashing. Devgn is a veteran and has been preparing for this movie for sometime and trying to push the envelope at his own end. He is not going to just come up with some snowcast Cliffhanger for a movie and is aware of market dynamics when it comes to bollywood esp if it is a Diwali release. I do feel he erred in not casting a top notch heroine to make it more viable something Salman learnt with Jai Ho experience…
Btw, I am still surprised why did SRK let go this Diwali release for Raees. Republic Day is never such a good time with exam fever hovering around parents and their kids and at most there is a gain of maximum one day which is going to be lost if there is a clash with Kaabil.
Now I am in two minds about the final result.
But the mood created by this song is something else. No arguments here. If there are two more songs like this, the film will be a sureshot hit. And we have SRK whose role maybe extended with some songs thrown in. And lots of candyfloss.
Shivaay has no chance.
Hope they take care of leaking and piracy.
@”But the mood created by this song is something else. No arguments here..”
The background score started well but the title song is just about okay and really for those into deep sher-o-shayri and is no where near the past classics of KJO. …. I mean do u get the vibe of even a ‘Tum Hi Dekho Na’ which was instantly hummable or even the title track of flop movie KANK was better than this…..and I am sure there is not going to be a Mitwa here with Pritam at the helm.
I think there was an earler comment calling Shivaay B-Grade. I don’t know what technically makes Shivaay B-Grade. It may be turn out to be complete crap like Akshay Kumar’s Blue or it may turn out to be Bollywood’s answer to Indiana Jones or Vertical Limit. Difficult to conclude before watching. However, looking at the production values, the resources deployed and efforts invested, calling it B-grade does seem a bit harsh.
Lots of money have been invested in both movies. However, none of them looks B-Grade. A certain preference to a certain genre should not mean that other genres are inferior. Lots of people do seem to share this kind of bias.
Do you know what Shivaay reminds me of? Do you remember Hindustan ki Kasam? This was also a very HOT project in the trade and Devgn with few superhits behind him and co-directing the movie and the trailers rocked. Incidently it was the ONLY film which created opening day record for Devgn. This was in 1999. It had even Amitabh Bachchan, Manisha, Sush and great songs.
The movie bombed but that besides the point, I still consider that a B-grade product and can’t even dare to watch if running on TV. Simple as that. Movies can be hit or flop but just pumping in money or shooting big action sequences doesn’t make it a top product.
I have no personal bias with Devgn, I judge him on movies. I would watch Singham without battling an eyelid and even loved U Me aur Hum to an extent but Shivaay is not the movie I am liking so far.
Hindustan KI Kasam was downright terrible. It was made by Veeru Devgan and Ajay himself was doing stuffs that were really poor during that time. But during the last decade, he has varied his roles instead of doing those insipid potboilers. And U, Me aur Hum wasn’t too bad. Cinema has evolved as well. Can turn out into something empty like Blue which was all good action scenes but no substance at all. Or something like Bang Bang where the action scenes were either poorly filmed or poorly edited or poorly written. Can alternatively turn out to be good as well. But I don’t think it could be as bad as HKK. Nothing in the trailer points towards that.
I think we have been regularly deceived by Bollywood when it comes to the recent big budget action/adventure/epic movies. We can add Ra1 or Drona or Mohenjodaro to the above list and they were big budget failures. The final products do not justify the huge budgets and resources deployed. So, there is room for skepticism. But these movies aren’t B-Grade. They are just poorly written or poorly executed.
Johar has a good film in him…if he can cut out the melodrama, long films & overkill in romance. KANK was ok till it went 30mins too long. His film’s extend to another script or twist that is simply not required.
Here it is intriguing cast for sure as Aishwariya will be considered fairly old & a generation older that Ranbir & Anushka. So her role in the film & story around her might be the spicy thing in the film.
It’s a remake of a late 70s film by Yashraj (though not directed by Yash Chopra) which didn’t do well at the time (though I think the opposite is true today if the right film is made) where [don’t read on if you don’t want to learn about the plot] a happily married Rishi Kapoor gets infatuated with an older woman. It turns out that this younger guy reminds her of her lost lover (in the original Shashi Kapoor has a special appearance as the other guy and of course there’s a family resemblance between him and Rishi). It doesn’t end happily ever after, depending on what ‘couple’ you’re rooting for!
If the remake is done in the spirit of the original it could be a very successful film but it would be one with a low ceiling. I’d suspect such a film cannot do more than 150-175 as the best case scenario. If however Johar adds a whole lot of Johar elements (!) then it could do a lot more but the risk of course is the KANK scenario where you dilute the good parts with the junk ones and/or make it too melodramatic. The trailer is certainly fine but as you said the casting (Ranbir-Aishwarya) is the only really fresh thing here.
more seriously though I think when people attack Johar for making genre films they do so because he makes poor genre films. Or films that were ok once but have aged poorly. No one would attack him if they really liked his genre films. So yeah to continue to your (tasteless) analogy if Johar could do genre like Hitchcock maybe no one would complain!
In fairness though that’s the Johar kind of filmmaking. You might find him boring even on his very best day (and that’s a fair position to take) but within that genre that is Johar’s brand of cinema (to greatly dignify it!) there are better and worse films. Now I have this position on most of contemporary Bollywood but still one should be able to spot better and worse. ADHM might be like KANK but the trailer is quite alright. yes it’s probably too late in the day for Johar as a general matter which is why he’ll have to really make his best film in ages.
Minutes after watching the teaser, Rediff.com’s Raja Sen spoke to Karan Johar, image, below, to get some sense of what to expect — and what not to expect — from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil this October
understand. Now, ever since the three posters came out yesterday, there’s been a lot of discussion as people have tried to read too much into them. So here’s the big rumour: Is it a double role, will we see two Ranbirs in the film?
(Laughs) It’s not a double role at all. To the people who have seen his two looks in the film, I just have to say: ‘People shave, dude.’ There’s so much speculation.
The other rumour I’ve heard is that it’s a Doosra Aadmi remake. It’s not, it’s not a film about infidelity at all.
classic Johar move.. do a remake and then say it isn’t a remake! Doosra Aadmi isn’t about infidelity either, at least not in the legalistic sense. He might play around with things a bit but I’d be surprised if it isn’t a remake.
I think you are hell bent to prove its Doosra Aadmi. Actually that can’t be secret once the movie is out, so there will be lots to discuss about it then. Personally, I feel there is always some similarity once the movie comparisions start. Like when OSO was launched.. everyone talked about being it Karz remake. So, ADHM will end up having similarity to Doosra Aadmi but as of now.. its all up in the air and too early to discuss.
OSO was absolutely a takeoff on Katz. You’re proving my point! And I’m not trying to prove anything. These stories cropped up in the media. Knowing Johar this is totally plausible. And based on the casting and the trailer even likely. Don’t think it matters very much to the film’s box office fate either way. Why would I be trying to prove anything ?
In DCH Akshay Khanna fall in love with Dimple but dont marry her.
Film makers are afraid to go all the way.
It will be revolutionary if Ash and Ranbir marry and Anushka ends up with Fawad Khan.
And why no one is talking why the characters are from muslim background for a change? A Mere Mehboob hangover ? With lots of shairis, ghazals and lucknowi culture? I think Karan Johar is going for this for the first time.
Having watched it a couple of times I do think that it does give the KANK kind of vibe. However, if KJo cuts out the melodrama and all the crying, the excess in romance and restricts its length, then it could be a more effective film.
KKHH still is Johar’s best effort till date. He is good while it is a good, old traditional love story, with the sugarcoating and innocence of relationships and the usual candy floss. But when it required him to take on the morally questionable in KANK, the effort was too tame and it lacked the required punch. It fell into never-ending melodrama.
If he cuts down the excesses, it may turn out to be one of his better efforts since KKHH.
That brings up interesting point that Diwali is on Sunday, Oct 30 and usually the biggest day for collections is next day, which is Monday Oct 31.
Even Krrish 3 had this issue when Diwali released on Sunday.. they were divided when to release the movie – Friday or Monday. If Diwali is sunday and both movies releasing on Friday, Oct 28.. then the verdict will be out before the big day. The 3 days before Diwali is supposedly slow.. so I’m thinking it will be huge impact for both movies.
Recently ..Mohenjodaro and Rustom had Monday holiday and over the first weekend.. they collected..
Rustom – 50 crs
Mohenjo Daro – 30 crs.
Based on this total of 80 crs and then Krrish collected around 50-55 crores, I think the max 2 movies will do is 120 crores and still that gives them average 60 cr weekend and its a huge task to touch 200 crores. ADHM will benefit from overseas and Shivaay might suffer on that count so needs to make up more in India collections.
Krk is no more a reliable insider mouthpiece he once was……esp so ever since there was news of man killed in ‘Jr NTR vs Pawan Kalyan’ clash between fans in Karnataka, he is scared some nut job may target him and his story will be khallas….. I was amused to note him singing Rajni praises during Kabaali which proved to be a inferior product. He was very harsh on him earlier and the Tamil crowd was ready to take on his case.
Further, just few days back Abhijeet was taken in custody for his twitter rants and abuses and since KJO is a universal voice of bollywood, he is shifting his loyalties in a very obvious manner lest he be behind bars.
Salman symbolizes ” indifference”. His movies neither need hype or krk’s blessings….krk guy changed his tune midway when he realized Salman’s star power and the way movie galloped towards creating records.
There was another complain above in one of the comment why excessive reactions to Salman’s movie is not pointed out. Fact is the guy has a well documented track record & lives up to the hype associated with his product esp the first few days smash previously set benchmarks. BV and Jazba lifetime totals don’t even equate to one day earning of the big guns so why give them so much buildup. Let them perform and reach those levels and then all is fair thereafter.
Meanwhile just noticed this and 2018??? It sounds totally crazy? So next Diwali and Christmas is up for grabs !!

Excited to announce our film with @aanandlrai & @iamsrk in association with @cypplOfficial.Releasing Dec 21, 2018.Title to be revealed soon!
its not really surprising to see KJo falling back into his “safe” space and making a movie he is totally comfortable with. Expectations for this movie should be the usual candyfloss drama that Dharma films churns out. Anyone expecting anything more than that hasn’t been paying attention to Dharma/YashRaj for the past 20 or so years. I’m not really a fan of Indian dramas but the preference for me is the ‘akhtar’ brand any day (DDD, DCH, Lakshya, ZMND, etc). KJo movies just don’t require a second or third watching..sometimes not even a first!
nice song..i don’t think the movie will do very well, seems too intense. I dont consider it a typical K Jo movie either as I associate him with wholesome family entertainers like KKHH and K3G.
For some reason Anushka does not work for me in the trailer. Aishwarya looks the best but the role is pretty risky for me, either she will hit it out of the park or will get panned for her performance ( the latter seems more likely).
Satyam: ‘No one would attack him if they really liked his genre films. So yeah to continue to your (tasteless) analogy if Johar could do genre like Hitchcock maybe no one would complain!’ So what makes you think he would make better films in another genre? It is perfectly okay to if you feel he makes bad films, but not to say he cannot or should not make films in the genre he is comfortable in and passionate about.
“I’m saying if he made better movies in his own genre people wouldn’t complain.”
People ALWAYS complain for 99% of the directors and you can’t please all. People complain about KKHH or K3G as well but there is lot of audience who’s ready to lap up KKHH or K3G type movies even now but Karan wants to make movies according to his sensibilities which are not massy to say the least. Both his last 2 big efforts are moving from his strengths(KANK and MNIK) to please his sensibilities over the acceptance.
Similarly.. Bhansali’s (hit/flop) movies will be always tortures for lot of folks and that complaint isn’t going anywhere.
ADHM to me seems a mashup of Ranbir Kapoor movies till now.
The destination fun angle (YJHD) , falling in one-sided love and rejection by girl (Bachna Ae Haseeno) , guy feels attracted to older woman (Wake Up Sid), comes back to earlier love (Tamasha) but she is getting married (Rockstar) etc etc..
Didn’t know Dear Zindagi is releasing this year. No doubt it is an Alia Bhatt film, but I read somewhere SRK has shot for nearly 50 days for the film so his role isn’t going to be minimal. The film will probably rely on WOM, just like English Vinglish.
Amongst the other releases, maybe Befikre has some chance. I don’t expect it to do wonders though. It will probably go the DDD way and underwhelm.
There is nothing exciting during the 2 months pre-Dangal. I think it will be a low key period at the BO.
Not much but somehow I cannot stand Farhan Akhtar. Its starts with his hoarse voice and forced singing and his general misuse of his dominion and forcing himself on the audience. It took few years and only now he has been shown his rightful place…..so may be he will get back to directing which he is really good at.
There is another one Saif for various other reasons….. but sometime later.
Rock On 2 could surprise big time..as it has Shraddha Kapoor who has been having quite a lucky period. Plus its a sequel of a much loved film by students/college audience which has grown up and now earning. Also it will have great music.
Sam I seriously don’t remember the music of Rock On at all and the cast with Rampal etc was just a no no !
Besides when you use the word ‘Rock’ please dong give that Akhtar voice !!! I listen to ‘Scorpions’ when it comes to rock and my tastes are a bit different. Just listen to ” winds of change ” . “Holiday” those lyrics and esp those voices and you’ll know what I mean !
Similarly Rockstar movie and those songs of ARR were such a shame too.
I actually love all the ‘irresponsible’ people of cinema! Those who want the audience to meet them at least half-way, who are often disappointed with the result in their lives but whose films have stood the test of time in many cases far better than the works of those who felt ‘responsible’. In every industry of the world there are examples of ‘failure’ that today contribute to any serious canonical listing. This is not a knock on Aamir of course since he’s tried to do meaningful commercial cinema at so many points. However I don’t have much time for this ‘responsibility’ argument that stars often like to make.
Its never about financial aspect for Karan Johar’s movies. Its about the prestige of clean Hit or superhit not getting back your money. In that aspect, its always will be economical but he’s not making this just to breakeven or earn money.
I don’t know how people give the satellite rights figure before release these days. That’s not how it works anymore. In most of the cases, satellite rights are slabbed based on the box office performance of the movie.
Actually if you follow KRK, its a running joke he always mentions.. Karan give me 25 lacs and I’ll promote your movie. He says that to everyone and always mentions 25 lacs.. so I believe that he just said that to avoid Kumar Mangat and Karan has not really given him money.
Firstly Karan is not in same circle or even in the same range.. and they can’t even be seen in same stage anywhere. Secondly, its too early to start giving money against Shivaay. Third – if you see KRK’s tweet we can guess why he would hate Shivaay as he think Ajay’s 1st directorial movie is a flop and he’s not a good director and thats the reason he is consistent when he says he don’t think Shivaay will do 200 cr and breakeven and hence flop. Also, I feel if he had really taken money he would have more secretive and since it is just another of his BS talk, he mentioned in same tone and not thought about it deeply.
It is just nice entertainment and I feel sad for Ajay Devgn who really think Karan will get along with folks like KRK and give him money to start bad mouthing Shivaay which he hasn’t that much anyways. No sane person is a fool to do any transaction or trust KRK coz he’s a nutjob and tomorrow he’ll say that Karan has given me money also… so he won’t do the mistake.
I think you are looking at Karan as the little angel who has yet to get corrupted by the evils of the society.
The assumption that Johar is too clean and holy to be associated with people like KRK is a naive one, to put it mildly.
There are crores at stake here as well as prestige as a film maker. I don’t think paid reviews or paying for good publicity and paying for bashing your competitor is anything new. We all know that in the real world, every film critic or section of the media can be made corrupt by money. They are as reliable an ashtray on a motorbike.
Almost every week on this blog itself, there are conspiracy theories evoked and talks about manipulation by the media. They don’t come out of the thin air or through sheer whims of imagination.
KRK may be talking utter crap. But there are 2 things here. One is that he blatantly says he has been paid and that he needs talk good about ADHM while bashing Shivaay. He accepts he has been paid for it. Second, is that his acts (tweets) seem to confirm what he says. He was positive about Shivaay a couple of weeks back and he suddenly makes a U-Turn and starts bashing it at very opportunity while being positive about Johar’s film.
It is a serious matter and it needs to be looked at. Devgan is right to take on Johar and KRK here. Of course he is not doing for his love for the industry. But his film and his money is that at stake and he has very right to condemn and seek redress for malpractices towards it.
Agree, the support for KJO is quite baffling anyway. Sure a nut is on the loose but even a nut is capable of telling the truth once in a while. It should be investigated & not ignored. Devgnn is not accusing he just wants it investigated, no harm in that.
“I think you are looking at Karan as the little angel who has yet to get corrupted by the evils of the society.
The assumption that Johar is too clean and holy to be associated with people like KRK is a naive one, to put it mildly.”
Very funny and totally wrong from my views. I’m not calling Karan any little angel or am naive one. You didn’t get the idea behind my comment. Karan can easily do such things but just not with KRK. If you don’t want to accept it, its fine but am not naive nor calling Karan some Harishchandra!
I am happy an upright guy like Devgn will Bajoa him properly now and even get free publicity. He recently got screwed by Vikram Bhatt and he took KRK to court where he ended up apologizing to him and did try to mend his ways .
I don’t know if i should share a personal anecdote here since I do not wish to cause any offence to anyone. Like others I used to tweet back and forth to him and to be frank few were laden with expletives too but there is one tweet which was very personal and kind of hit him below the belt which i think he must have read and that day he blocked me because the truth hurt him badly.
There were series of tweet –
Listen KRK you are a perfect example of what’s ailing with your brotherhood. Call it luck /destiny but you are a real rags to riches story. But you don’t realize like many this is the upper limit you ‘xxxxx’ all will reach. Look at each billionaire story most of them started with scratch…..you are nothing new. Before reaching where they are now, they pass the level you are currently at. But look how you are wasting your time here with pompousness and grandiose showing off your wealth and money and indulging in cheap filmy talks but the real Ambanis/ Tatas / Adani have gone ahead further and are busy creating more wealth but that’s the problem with your ‘xxxxxx’ and you all will be stuck at this level at the best instead of going further in life.
Audio recording leaked: Now, Ajay Devgn sends out statement on Karan Johar and KRK
DNA WEB TEAM | Thu, 1 Sep 2016-09:55pm , dna webdesk
“….This is shocking and following this audio recording leak, Ajay has issued an official statement against Karan Johar and KRK.
“I have been a part of the Indian film industry for the past 25 years and have been associated with over 100 films. My father was a professional action director and I have an emotional connection with this industry.
It therefore pains me to see that people like Kamaal R Khan are holding the film industry to ransom by spreading negativity about films to extort money from producers.
It is very sad that people from our own industry are supporting such elements and spoiling the ethos of the film industry.
I would strongly demand that this be thoroughly investigated by competent authorities to clarify if Karan Johar was indeed involved in this.”
You never know ! Hear the voices on the tape and how he is complaining ‘your hero does not even reply to my messages – birthday wishes. He also talks about cast of some other movie and waiting for good news / bad news. What is the need of film-stars to ‘thoko’ salaam to this douche bag? Is he a gangster or part of some D gang wing or something?
Going by the pics he posted earlier, he got audience in a diametrically opposite personality like Bhansali … the so called maverick / no-nonsense filmmaker.Looking at the results he may have benefited in the BM/Dilwale clash by preventing any negativity against him. In the past KJO too has been publicly wishing his son FRK birthday and there were pics of SRK with him last Dec too. Now all this is okay at certain level, but why would you publicly meet and give time to this dirt bag who goes around insulting and abusing your industry colleagues and post nasty cheap comments on heroines esp anushka, sonakshi , parineeti etc….Logically even if you don’t wish to defend them at best you would ignore him, but why would you want to slight your colleagues by publicly legitimizing his presence …..so there is definitely something more than meets the eye….
Last but not the least going by KJO’s rumored sexual orientations, he may be going out of the way to protect Ranbir and is enamored by his sweet arse. If he is a batter or receiver in this relationship is not revealed but he has admitted in AIB Roast that he is basically a ‘receiver’ in these kind of orgies. It is also known he got Ranveer replaced with Ranbir from BV even though Kashyap had already signed Ranveer and was broadcasting all over the place how he is making the Indian Godfather trilogy which will cover Bombay from the 50s to now as 3 part movie. Trying to prevent that to happen anyone else but Ranbir, KJO is so unethical that he actually stretched his backside for a guy like Kashyap whose claim to fame till then was only by dissing kjo and yrf kind of cinema publicly. There were also media report somewhere in 2013, how kjo upset srk and after YJHD had thought he had discovered a new ‘badmateez dil’. That Ranbir could not keep on that promised start is well known and currently as the guy is in survival mode, kjo is pulling on all stops to make things work for him. Even begging srk to do a cameo where technically he is laying his cards and Ranbir is supposedly going to remind Aish of SRK to fall for him. Ranbir would be made to follow few of srk mannerism for aish to think like that……so basically a symbolic notion similar to what we had in Shakti is going to be the aim….remember the ending…..Dilip Kumar / Amitabh Bachchan followed by Anil Kapoor…
Karan Johan’s upcoming film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ is soaring on a high note across the country. The teaser of the film was recently released and has already garnered accolades and more than 8 Million views.
But, did we know how was the title of the film finalized?
When Karan had to announce the film, he and his creative team had decided to name the film ‘Ae Dil’.
As per reports, Karan Johar always wanted to keep the current title but his creative team suggested him to remove ‘Mushkil’ as it denotes negativity.
Later, when the title song was being recorded, “Tu safar mera, hai tuhi meri manzil, tera bina guzara, ae dil hai mushkil’…” everyone present at the recording loved the lyrics and that’s when they agreed with Karan and they named it ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
There is the history of KRK and Johar in this link. U’ll notice how suddenly KRK seems to start promoting ADHM and get into Shivaay-bashing mode. Either this guy is a lunatic or he is in Johar’s payroll.
Of course there is no court case and legal angle to all this. This is all about perception battle. There are two important things to note -.
– If the movie is bad / avg –krk excessive trashing brings the movie to a non performance level and a big movie ends up like BV and wounds up within 25 cr level, whereas otherwise just basic settling would take the totals to 60—70cr at the minimum.
– If the movie is good, the same excessive praise will take the movie from a 80-100 cr to 140/160 cr as people would be willing to check it out.
There is a definite financial string attached to all this and this kind of bitter fight will remain until the ticket prices for movie remain high and audience is miserly in spending and will only watch selected movies due to restrictions to their domestic budgets.
Until economy moves to the next level where 300 bucks becomes ‘loose change’ or if otherwise ticket prices are brought down within 100 bucks range , this clash fight will remain in place and we cannot have a Lagaan / Gadar and Dil / Ghayal moments anymore.
TZP/Welcome or RH/Ghatak or even VZ/Aitraaz kind of deal where 1 is humungous and other one a moderate success relatively.
On Ajay Devgn’s audio recording of KRK as an evidence to prove Karan’s involvement in bribing KRK to write negatively about Shivaay, it appears to me after listening to the conversation twice that KRK was trying to avoid Kumar Mangat’s continuous insistent pinning on overpromoting ADHM and spreading negativity about Shivaay and on the spur of the moment he spoke, just to make it a non-issue, regarding his fondness for ADHM!! When Mangat hinted about offering the same to KRK for writing positively about Shivaay, he not once agreed to his offer! KRK is a non-entity atleast for me when it comes to wielding clout in Bollywood as neither does he have ‘connections’ to destroy a movie nor is he looked upon as an A-list reviewer whose reviews are waited with bated breath before determining one’s movie choice! Ajay Devgn still has an edge over Johar as his product has the uniqueness of appealing to both single screen as well as mutiplex audience as Shivaay boasts of high octane action sequences which if shot well could tilt the competition in its favour. But i’d like this issue to be probed just for the sake of ethics and propriety and truth to prevail regardless of ‘winner or loser’.
KRK views are not that determining to make such a difference to movies. If it is one’s favourite star, the fans will still go and watch. If it is a rival fan’s film, fans may avoid but if the movie has very good wom, everyone will like to check it out. There are other reviewers and people read them too.
I think there was a column somewhere where KRK’s influence in Bollywood was highlighted. It does seem that some people in the industry support him either for fear of being abused or especially when they have an axe to grind against people he is trashing.
He releases his reviews early on Thursdays from the Gulf and that may influence perception about a movie. So, a producer may feel there is to gain from an early positive review rather than a very negative one which reveals spoilers and completely bashes the movie.
“KRK tags a prominent Publicist asking media to get in touch with her for any queries. She has been seen celebrating his birthday along with a few celebrities. Somehow such acts of a few people from within the industry have emboldened KRK and he feels that he’s a power centre impacting Bollywood’s fortunes.”
Not sure why there is a big fuss over all this. Whether anything happened here or not this kind of ‘corruption’ or at least severe compromise is par for the course for the industry. Have said this for years. It’s all kinds of stuff from cash to electronic gifts to farmhouse vacation offers to what not. Then there’s the access carrot dangled in front of many in the media. I won’t get into even more sordid stuff here. Some of this stuff isn’t necessarily new but yes given the pretensions of the ‘family values’ crowd in the contemporary industry it’s a lot more hypocritical. These guys play the dirtiest games in certain respects. Again there might not be anything to this current story but that doesn’t change anything. From reviews that are made to order to collections made to inflate this stuff happens all the time.
Of course some of those who pretend to be so enraged that this stuff is happening are better to the extent that they don’t necessarily play these games when it comes to release dates and reviews and what not (though one could argue they’ve never really had the power to play these games in the first place!) but in terms of other kinds of exploitation and what not they’re as bad if not worse. And again I never say this stuff without knowing what I’m talking about.
Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma play Bollywood junkies in filmmaker Karan Johar’s Diwali release ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
Portions of this romantic saga have been shot in Paris — the love capital of the world — where the city is captured in its entirety. In what could be called a befitting ode to Bollywood, Ranbir and Anushka roamed the French capital’s streets singing the title track of ‘An Evening in Paris’ (producer-director Shakti Samanta’s 1967 hit that had RK’s grand-uncle, Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles).
Some sites promote and work like PR agents for Salman Khan and SRK manipulating figures and spreading bad wom for their competitors. Are they ethical? Are they not paid to do extraordinary favours to some stars just because they wear respectable robes?
What about bollywood ganging up against Mohenjodaro and promoting Rustom?
Well all this 2-3 days hype by Krk and Ajay has been laid to rest.. It’s time Devgan launches promos of songs or two to counter adhm whose just a small song teaser has overshadowed shivaay trailer.. He needs to pull up his socks on marketing as, kjo is a marketing genious whose films target ” weekend business”
As pointed out by sanajana, one more song by admh team will tilt the favor in for kjo team.. Believe It or not, it has generated quite a hype among the youngsters and females that the plex audiences will lap it up it if it is a good film.. Even the costs of the film aren’t much compared to Shivaay..
The only person who is getting benefitted from this is KRK. There is an editorial in TOI’s Hindi daily NBT on the same. Though, the editorial itself questions the capability of KRK to do any harm to any movie, getting mentioned in a leading daily of the country is itself an achievement for KRK. Similarly, there is a big article in TOI Delhi Times also on the same.
KRK is attention seeker and cannot be trusted…he could have either received money from KJO or might have just said to get money from AD…even if he got money from KJO..how its illegal for getting paid for promoting any movie? He didn’t gave review..I don’t think legal action would do anything against him…as spending/getting money for promotions is not illegal. That is if he really received money..And ain’t its illegal to record conversation without consent? What was AD trying to do? Sting operation? Or AD is playing his own games as ADHM teaser seems to be well received and wanted to divert attention to Shivaay again? But given its KRK he is just using everyone to spark controversy for his own gain…now he was all over media…the 2rs critic have indeed become furthermore popular because of this unnecessary controversy. Got paid or not but he is the biggest gainer in this drama.
I don’t think AD is going to win a legal battle with recording. But we are mixing things up here.
Paying for promotions is fair and ethical. The problem here is ethics. If KRK really got paid, he is posing as a trade analyst to put across what he has been paid to say. Which is unethical. What is more unethical is the bashing of the other film. You don’t base your promotion campaign on bashing your competitor’s product. It is extremely unethical. This is the basis of marketing. I don’t know the laws in India but in most countries there are competition laws prohibiting that.
Which is why you’ll never find a Coca Cola ad saying Pepsi is crap, so don’t drink it. Or Mercedes basing their promotions campaign on claiming that BMW cars are shit.
IMO, there are better looking guys than Fuad, but he certainly seems to be a much better actor than all these other Pak imports. He certainly has a screen presence, and IMO, somehow he ends up portraying dark brooding gravitas more convincingly than what Ranbir can do. Remember his fame has followed from his Paki Urdu serial stints, which are much better at nuanced portrayals than their Indian cousins. Perhaps it is easier to portray gravitas when aided by high falutin Urdu zabaan, than in the mixture of contemporary languages used in Indian soaps.
Since YDHM seems to be having similar dark emotions in a Urdu social setup, Fuad certainly has an advantage. Ergo my comment about him taking Ranbir to the cleaners.
As for Ranbir’s current predicament, it is very difficult to permanently occupy a well defined personality slot in starpower driven Bwood. Khans and perhaps Akshay are only ones who have carved those spots for themselves. No one else since them has had perennial occupancy. Hrithiik’s slot seems to be getting usurped by upstarts such as Tiger. JrB never got a slot. Ranveer/Shahid may get one. But Ranbir might lose his to blokes like Fuad or even Sidharth, because he seems to have gotten stuck in a rut somewhere.
Baaki, hum kuch bhi eroticized ya exoticized tendencies nahi rakhtey mere bhai. Kapoor n Sons mein becharey Fuad ka exit se entry karva ke, KJo has already broken hearts of several females in my household. Now they are all excited about fulfilling those eroticized/exoticized tendencies in YDHM.
In many ways your comment seems to confirm much that I was referring to! By the way I’ve never really been part of the Ranbir fan club. However preferring Fauad Khan as an actor is something else. As for whether Ranbir can get overshadowed or not that’s a different sort of debate. Never thought Ranbir was anything out of the ordinary in terms of screen presence anyway. Purely in this limited sense I see your point, and again within that cross-section I’ve been referring to the cake is already baked!
These are either concocted or publicity stories…
We are assuming AB is MCP enough to be miffed when himself acted like this after marriage…or If there was issue they could have sat down after Dhoom2 and discussed what is appropriate?
There was some truth during Dhoom2 Ash-Hrithik kissings as well and there might be truth even here. I’m just surprised why Amitabh is giving out family issues out in the media. He can just be practical and say good words and move on and keep internal issues at home. If he says he hasn’t seen the promo after 2-3 weeks of its release, it comes across as fake. If there are no issues, anyone will easily checkout the promo when he’s on Twitter always and watching random fan videos.
the stories concern the father not the son. Abhishek has commented on the first trailer and how it’s looking great and so on. The father hasn’t (even when asked somewhere said he hadn’t seen the trailer). Or there was a bit about both not being happy initially before one of them commented.
After the letter to his granddaughter and his thoughts during Pink interviews on gender quality, I will be really surprised if BigB has any problem.
I think Maan Beta are the more who would get affected or probably got.
2 Hit Songs. Ash and Ranbir is looking the freshest pair.
Ash is looking smoking. She is better dressed (playing the role of seductress), perfect sized and that look on her face…man even the gays will get swayed.
I also don’t understand why we need to play down Shivaay. Devgn is a passionate fimmaker. He is experienced and knows the craft. He is also confident about the product. His is not the kind of movie that needs Hit songs, ADHM needs and it has. But all this would not afeect Shivaay’s opening which i think will open better than ADHM in the morning and probably on day 1, though by a thin margin.
“I also don’t understand why we need to play down Shivaay. Devgn is a passionate fimmaker. He is experienced and knows the craft. ”
Nothing to do with beeing passionate but no one expects him to garner 200cr hit. If he does its still gonna be a surprise. Ashutosh is more honest and passionate maker but still he didn’t get any free passes, so why are you expecting Devgn to get one before he has proven anything?
To spell it out clearly… in last 15 years and 60 films besides Rohit Shetty films, only couple of films were successes – OUTIM(semi-hit) and Son of Sardaar(Hit – remake of SS Rajamouli’s southern blockbuster). So, why should he get free pass? Is his record proves as something Aamir does? He’s hardly able to generate a clean Hit/Superhit from decades outside Rohit Shetty and yet you expect folks to automatically expect a great film and superhit in Shivaay easily!
I think this will go the JTHJ vs SOS way. The difference here is ADHM will have chartbusters which JTHJ didn’t have but Shivaay has slick action which SOS didn’t have.
Both the movies don’t seem viable for families as ADHM has steamy scenes and Shivaay has lots of violence.
There is no way Shivaay is opening better than adhm. The critics will destroy Shivaay on opening day itself and this is where it will struggle. Adhm is being done by PVR, hence it will have more screens. Also history proves people prefer watching romantic movies on Diwali or pre Diwali than action films. That was proved when kuch kuch Hota hai had the better opening vs Bade miya chothe miyan. And from which angle Ajay looks confident on shivaay. He is scatrd about a a guy like Krk about bashing his movie. Proves he is not confident about Shivaay so far.
Simple tell-tale prospect about Shivaay is that Eros who were with the movie from past 2 years just pulled out his hands 1 month before release. No one in right frame will do that if the project is great and sureshot blockbuster!
s the biggest clash at the box office between Ajay Devgn’s ‘Shivaay’ and Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ nears, rumours have started doing rounds that someone is trying to sabotage Ajay’s film.
Rumour has it that Eros Studio has left Ajay’s film this year but reportedly Eros left the film last year itself. In fact, it left Ajay and his creative team without finance and they couldn’t start the film till Jayantilal Gada came on board and it had been widely reported at that time itself.
Whether someone is trying to sabotage the film or not, only time will tell but Ajay Devgan seems unmoved by all this. In fact, he is planning his marketing strategy to promote the film. The actor has planned a US tour along with Kajol to generate buzz there too. Ajay is also planning to release another trailer to create even more buzz.
I think BMCM had a better opening than KKHH in almost all mass centres. Don’t write off Shivaay. The songs of ADHM are good no doubt but are all for the class centres. The interiors will go enmasse for Shivaay…Mark my words…
BMCM had a bigger week one than KKHH because it was a more universal film. It wasn’t getting beaten in the metros. But surely Devgan is not the Bachchan/Govinda combo in a David DHawan film when Dhawan was doing well? Surely it’s not like the Makhna moment? You can’t seriously compare the two. I have nothing against Devgan (even if I’m not a fan and I don’t like his politics) and certainly the first trailer was impressive at certain levels. But this still looks like a white elephant.
I’d also say this, while the smaller centers or the single screens like action it’s not clear to me that Hollywoodized action is what really works with these audience. There’s a reason why Salman has prospered doing precisely Telugu masala. There might be Hollywood edits, some action shots here and there but overall the Salman film is very much in an Indian (read: Telugu outlandish) tradition. But the other reason is that typically filmmakers who try to match up to Hollywood standards in their action sequences end up doing only this. Without a proper script a collection of even very effective moments never quite works. Maybe Devgan pulls it off but the trailer seems completely susceptible to the reading I’m offering. I’m in any case wary of characterizations where those mythical single screen audiences mechanically show up for action. Yes each audience cross-section has its genre preferences but ultimately people are looking for a story that entertains them and/or convinces them.
Shivaay by the way is not even arriving at a time when Devgan is doing particularly well if at all. Unlike a few years ago when he had Singham and other Shetty films in the recent past. And of course let’s also look at the obvious here. Without Shetty Devgan had a pretty poor track record even at that time. None of his other stuff has worked barring to an extent SOS which was of course the remake of a very successful film. Even then a lethargic JTHJ did as much or more at the box office. Incidentally and despite two successful song trailers I’m not huge on ADHM by any means. John’s moment has fundamentally passed. But the genre still has enough strength in the multiplexes to put up serious numbers (not record breaking) even if it does relatively decently. And if the film is much better than one might expect from Johar it could do a lot more. So the floor and ceiling here are just much higher than Shivaay’s unless of course Johar pulls a turkey which doesn’t seem very likely.
This is good Week 1 number. The gross in TN is around 32 cr and it is third biggest opener in 2016 just ahead of 24 which did around 29 cr gross in Week 1. I suspect it needs a bit if follow through though and hopefully it wont go the way 24 did. This is welcome news for Vikram
All songs are shown to media types particularly active on twitter a day before the release and then each one goes gaga following a pattern. In fact a week back there is a funny tweet of Virendra Sehwag on the exact language one is told to use after coming out of a viewing . KJO has curry favor with nearly each and every trade person known. But he does not realise on the day of reckoning he still has to overcome the 2.5 hated personalities on board ADHM. Ranbir, Aish and 50% of Anushka.
Preet in my view Kjo needs avoid pushing the envelope beyond a point because if Shivaay is turned into an underdog and expectations go down and movie turns out half as good, the whole focus then shifts towards the other movie. Further if Ajay is bit smart, he would have played the Shiv – god of yogis, self controlled, celibate and destroyer angle well as a climatic masterpiece.
Coming to the song this sounds more like Challa di rab da phire from JTHJ but that one inspite of poor run of the movie turned out more iconic and was an instant chartbuster when it came. KJo is trying to get all the traits of SRK in Ranbir and even handed him a guitar with similar outfits with this one and let’s see upto what extent does he succeed.
Ranbir has the exact same looks that he had in Rockstar.
liked the song,
It gives the feeling of Doosra Aadmi !!
The steamy scenes or the suggestions thereof may piss off the aunties !
Bolo Har har har har Maha Dev !!!!
There cannot be a better analysis of the situation. However I have a different take on one of the three counts.
Negativity / hated personalities part is quite interesting and specially the Bhaijaan fans find Aish repulsive and naturally so as they do not know the real story and Sallu has played the victim card. With Kat, again Sallu becomes a victim in the eyes of his fans. For them Sallu is seen as Kat’s career building which Kat did not consider while leaving him for Ranbir. Anushka gets 50% negativity as she did not approve of Salman’s comment on his condition after a film’s shoot as a raped girl.
I think Salman has played the victim card really well but is not a victim by any stretch of imagination.
Agree with KJo pushing Shivaay as an underdog and thereby the movie can surprise. We have seen this happening in case of SRK/Rohit shetty/Kajol hyping up Dilwale and BM came from behind and won as underdong.
The comparision with Challa song with Bulleya is bang on and so is Karan’s attempt to make Kapoor look like SRK.
at a party last Saturday there were almost 12 families, I asked casually , and it seemed that all the ladies preferred ADHM and all the guys Shivay !
IMO both movies will do well !!
But yaar yeh Faad Khan kyon hai KJo kee Pichchar mein ???
Sid is too ‘stiff’ an actor and a makeshift arrangement. Among the newbies, KJo has been basket shopping for passion fruit for sometime and Ranbir seems a better actor & more important much more ‘mellow’ as per promos here. Initially Ranbir played hard to get but disasters and failure made him change course to Dharma. Who knows he enjoyed the BV angle of Kaizad Khambatta fascination of Johnny Balraj a tad much to try it further……
No doubt Shivaay also has good buzz.. But mosly this buzz has been generating among Hindu bhakts/ road chap people. Who are neither Middle class or poor. And Devgan is using this ” shiva ” as his own trump card among people who are admirers of Shivaay the God. Some people think why I’m hating Shivaay. This is one of the prime reasons.. After watching the trailers of Shivaay. One gets a feeling that therr is nothing in the film. What Mr Devgan did here in the name of originality is put some ” shiva dialogues from Bhagwat Gita to generate a certain buzz. And that can be scene in every trailer of Shivaay . Also did someone note so far, Devgan Saab is hiding the whole team of his side actors in the promos..
@One gets a feeling that therr is nothing in the film”
how do we know ? Last heard the movie is at least 2.5 hrs long.
Why don’t you wait for the story to unfold. As I said if there is some monster angle / over the top villain angle this will get the kids in hordes.
Please be patient and don’t just go by media hype which has truly aligned with kjo/dharma. The only dissenting voices like krk and others have been well catered so let’s not get carried away.
Don’t get carried away with KJO’s talent. Remove srk ( peak form ) from k3g/kkhh and others and u cannot sit thru his movie even for 10 mins.
Mr Dhoni: I rspect ur opinion, but after hearing the ott laughter n pathetic acting by the child actor in the last bit of promos sealed the deal. And this is a fact, most of ad fans are playing this religious angles so far on Twitter and YouTube.. And second, I’m not a fan of kjo. I’m a Ranbirs fan and there is no hidden agenda from my side here.
by that logic, K.Jo is making sure the hindu audiences refrain from seeing Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (the trailor, the setting, the actor, song#1, song#2 etc). I am pretty certain the hindu audiences wont stay away so what does reveal about Mehra’s logic?
Good question Neo…..The answer has to come from either Amod Mehra or from Master who seems to of the opinion that if you ridicule Faad Khan- then you are being ant Paki, or if you praise Shivay then you are being too religious !!
Aside- Just as Katrina looks slightly old in BBD, Ash too is going the Madhuri Dixit way !!
Anushka will win this baazi hands down !!!
What Amod Mehra has idiotically uttered an underlying agenda these people bring on the table. Not only they come across as stupid but also political.
Even in this forum I have been naming and shaming few who uses the same agenda to undermine the past work and future work of stars other than Aamir Khan- Jayshah, Myselfaamir, cool dude and aamirsfan.
People will be surprised with Shivaays opening. Opening is likely to be massive. It will end up being a Bajirao vs Dilwale kind of clash. And Kjo the puppet of SRK will meet the same fate. All biggies of Bollywood except SRK and KRK will back Shivaay which will completely change the equation in terms of audience perception.
Below is an excellent read especially for the colonised mindset so called liberal Indians staying abroad and speaking Western English. Have always had great respect for Gautier and his courageous writing. His analysis below is hard hitting and spot on. Glad that despite staying abroad for most of my life I still respect great Indian traditions, culture and history( not the one forcefed by the British). Do
Read and educate yourselves.
Don’t know who will win the clash. But so far u can’t deny the fact admh song promos giving devgan sleepless nights. In response he is calling out the bad spirits with a rap song ” bolo har har” lol. Next when actual trailer comes out of Adhm. What will devgan have in response? This time he will do skating in the snow to create buzz lol. His last big grosser outside shetty productions was Rajneeti whose lead was ranbir. Even with shetty he hasn’t given a 150+ grosser. So yes, this will gross 200cr. Yes it can happen, if it’s as good as Avatar or dark knight lol.
Preet Singh to be frank – due to anxieties ended up listening to ADHM soundtrack over the weekend and let me say it is truly over hyped, over promoted & pumped for no reasons. The title track is just about okay and not a Kal Ho Na Ho it’s been made out to be and neither is the sufi Bulleya a Mitwa. Bulleya is below avg and picturisation gives us a sense of rockstar deja vu. The soundtrack at this time seems overrated and there are many others like me who feel the same and arijit singh sounds same all over the place.
The over promotions and constant chatter on social media gives this movie BV vibes in terms of putting people off. Ranbir simply cannot jump from doing below 60 cr netter to challenging the status quo at the top. He needs to get thru the middle rung of a ladder first to challenge the crème da crème de la crème.
Well, yes to a matter of fact. It is over hyped. But u are in the minority regarding soundtrack. Cause there are many who are liking it’s soundtrack and there’s more to come. And the funny stuff is that upcoming songs are all sung by arjit singh. With just 2 songs they have created such hype . What will happen when all the songs / trailer come up. Bro that title song was and is one of the best songs in recent times. And on bulleya, it took time to catch on nd it’s working well with the buzz. Yes the video is great, and is talking the songs to a new level. but it’s the chemistry between the leads along with freshness, and a suspense about who will end up with who. which is also working in its favor and u can’t deny that.. All I can say at the moment, if this over hype as u suggest can translate into opening. Well then all good. But if kjo gives a turkey, then it will bite the dust.. How is it giving BV vibes? See it’s all the ranbir haters who are spreading all this. And these include the Bhaijan fans with devgan. And I request don’t believe much into this Twitter and YouTube hype. Cause in the outside world there are plenty who are liking Adhm songs and waiting for the movie along with shivaay. At this point both can open with a bang. Adhm in plex and shivaay in SS..
Well now Ajay released a teaser of darkasht song from shivaay.. And he is kissing for the first time, now where are all the people who were saying that this film is providing something new.. Lol haters are bashing ash character in the bulleya song. But what about a 50 year old devgan kissing a 20 year old actress. Why the double standard ?
Promos and hype aside, how will the present ‘war-like’ situation affect the actual mood of people to go see a movie in which 3 out of 4 characters are from the enemy country? KJO may be pilloried for releasing this film in such an environment.
I will concede that the temperature in India is at an all time high against Pakistan government and army.
However I don’t think that would be an issue when Indian actors are playing pakistani characters, except Fawaad.
There is still some time for release date but tweets like this must be sending chills down kjo spine. I doubt he is much bothered with financial losses if any but his investments in his boy toy may go waste which is a much bigger deal for him.
I think Ajay is missing a trick or two in promotion after having a title as powerful as Shivaay. I was expecting the movie to be about Lord Shiva based on the novel by Tripathi’s triology.
However it seems he has made an action movie and have just used the title as Shivaay. The powerful title could have given so much of hype to the movie if only DevGn would have focussed on the several acpect that Losrd Shiva carries – Destroyer, Sacrificial, Anger, Wisdom, Protector, The Supreme, etc.
So far he has focussed only on the Protector and Destoryer and has done injustice in projecting the Shivaay in true sense.
Naveen : Very well written there, but Devgan is more under pressure by the hype created by the 2 songs of adhm.. That he has no aces up his sleeve to counter it in promotions.. Contrast to adhm, there are rumours that trailer is releasing next week along with an item song sung by Arjit song with Lisa Hayden and Ranbir. So far Kjo is covering all the bases and Devgan has limited in approch. Only thing he can do is have more dialogue action promos to counter adhm buzz.
Looking at the atmosphere Abhijeet may get a free ride this time !
Abhijeet Lashes Out Against KJo & Mahesh Bhatt For Giving Work To Pak Artistes
The singer is vocal, yet again
Sukarna Mondal Sep 21 2016 10:32 AM337
In the wake of the terrorist attack at Uri (Kashmir) on Sunday, which resulted in the death of 17 Indian soldiers, Bollywood singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has lashed out against filmmakers Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt. He tweeted:

With KJo giving a break to Fawad Khan in his upcoming film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Bhatt giving many Pak actors a ticket to Bollywood, Abhijeet abused B-Town for giving opportunity to artistes from across the border.
The singer has landed himself in numerous controversies for his bold remarks.
Latest song from shivaay: it’s loosing stream after every song.. Devgan looks complete forced/bored in that promo. Even the kiss looked completely out of the place.. That actress looks very annoying in every scene. But song is very avg. Mithoon is such a good singer and composer. But here he has churned out a turkey. Seriously devgan has lost the battle interms of promotions so far. Mr devgan u need some to release some dialogue promos to counter this buzz of Adhm.
I sincerely hope and pray that Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t play the very regal Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s kid brother in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Muskil. Though chances of that eventuality seem dim since in the Bulleya song we see him slipping his hand up her thighs.
Siblings don’t do such things, at least not the ones I know.
So then going by visual evidence we can presume that Ms Rai Bachchan and Master Kapoor play lovers. There is ample evidence of it in the song Bulleya as Amit Mishra screams his lungs out trying to get as SufiasBollywood can get.
Clearly this is a song of Pakistani origin. All Sufi love songs in our films sound like background proddingforEmraan Hashmi’s kissing binges, and this one is no exception. So as Mishra’s screams of Bulleya rent the ear, and I do mean ear, Ranbir strikes Rockstar poses before the microphone. In case the first song, the eminently haunting title track of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil left us in any doubts as to what Ranbir’s profession and passion are in this film Bulleya makes it very clear that he plays a singer…
….A singer with lots of girlfriend problems. While he is slipping his hand up one lady’s dress he ‘s also necking and smooching another girl Anushka Sharma who it seems is from Pakistan(how do I know? She has lots kohl in her eyes ) which is fine by me. But will it jell well with the saffron society? Is this going to be another controversial film from Dharma Productions?
So what’s the deal…and what’s the big deal? The song Bulleya is very routine and makes us hanker for more of Arijit’s soulful vocals which were promised in the title song. Why has he been banished after being promised the entire album , since Ranbir plays a singer in the film(not Rockstar again, please).
ADHM: What a cracking promo.. Must say kjo, fooled the audience with its dark theme in songs. But here, it looks like it has something for the SS audience too. Anyway what a promo man, if if its as good as trailer. Sure fire 100cr
Dil mein mere hai dard-e-disco, dard-e-disco, dard-e-disco !
MNS gives 48 hours deadline to Pakistani actors to leave India; Demands ban on release of ADHM & Raees
NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers association on Friday said that they would not allow the release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushqil’ and ‘Raees’ in India as the movies feature Pakistani actors while giving a 48-hour deadline to the stars from the other side of the border to leave India.
MNS Chitrapat Sena president Amey Khopkar warned the Pakistani actors that they would face serious consequences in India if they do not leave the nation within 48 hours.
“We give a 48 hour deadline to Pakistani Actors and artists to leave India or MNS will push them out,” said Khopkar.
This comes at a time when tensions between the two Asian neighbours has escalated to a new level post the killing if 18 Army personnel in a dastardly terror attack on an army base camp in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
India has blamed Pakistan for the attack as the investigating agencies reportedly recovered weapons and ammunition bearing Pakistani marks from the site.
So I listened to the trailer while driving to work, and with no visuals – it was really pathetic…Ranbir’s voice did not have the maturity to mouth those lines, the dialogs themselves sounded too old , done to death and boring..but the bulleya song sounded really really good.
looking at this latest trailer the film might be a mash of Silsila and Doosra Aadmi. Must say it doesn’t seem very inspiring. The music is fine, the song trailers are actually better. But even for the terrain it’s not interesting enough. Ranbir in many ways might be the weakest link here. The film of course can still do very well given the natural advantage this sort of subject often has in the multiplexes. Doesn’t take too much to convince those audiences. But Ranbir at least in these trailers isn’t star enough for the venture. Not that I ever thought much about his screen presence but that’s another story. Anushka also looks thoroughly stale. It’s looking more like a 150 crore hit to me even if it works very well rather than anything more. And it could easily fold up well below that. Of course Ranbir currently will take any kind of hit and I know it’s not always about the gross. You can get away with a combination of enough critical attention and a respectable gross. In any case the Bulleya trailer in my view was the best one so far.
150 cr with clash with another big project is a huge hit and especially in current phase of Ranbir who hasn’t had anything besides disasters from YJHD in 2013 to current. Even KJo never went anything closer to 100 crores.
fair point but I’m assuming a quick fade for Shivaay.. also given that Bajirao did a lot more than 150 (with Dilwale also doing 130 or 140) and period genres tend to be much more tricky Johar should really be able to get more here. Nonetheless that’s a fair point.
Munna: I agree, Aashiqui 2, yeh jaawani, soty, Humpty sharma ko dulhaniya all were like old bottle in a wine.. What’s common between them all? All had silly mad dialogues, acting, chemistry and music which worked in its favor.. Most of new romantic comedies like bar bar Dekho had crappy actors with silly directors handling such subject bound for failure.. To handle such subjects u need established directors like adi chopra or la kjo to work in some way.. Also don’t u think this is a great marketing promo by Karan.. As people we’re saying this had dark scenes n looked intense.. Hence will not work in Ss.. But here if movie has a soul, it can work anywhere.. Whether ur high end plex, low end plex or even In Single screens.. All I will say, have seen till now movies which become big hits these days.. Rather have a intelligent story to say.. It’s more of a actor enjoying his part in the film with great chemistry among the leads.. This is where most of salman films off late have been huge success..
The trailor is nice. The movie looks like en entertainer rather than a very heartbreaker kind of movie which i suspected from the title song. Bulleya is one amazing song..Just awesome to hear…Ranbir will rock in this movie
Its unfair on movies already shot if they cant release the movie due to this MNS factor. Maybe in future they will now think of taking a Paki actor. Kapoor and Sons released without any hassle. I hope ADHM doesn’t face an issue because of this.
Really appreciate ur views comming from a neutral fan… I also found te trailer fairly decent.. But rk, Anushka, ash are totally killing it along with dialogues so far.. What to do u think can it do decent in the Ss after this trailer?? Or still a high end plex film,? N related to MNS, kjo and Srk are influential people.. They will sort out this matter pre release.. Or cut certain scenes of fawad.. Since he is only an extended cameo along with Srk…
Karan Johar really got to pull up his socks, and give us something more substantial. The trailer is typical KJo style – he recycles everything from his movies just with different people….. from intense suddenly this movie became a comedy.
KJO cleverly gets more of Anushka here due to her standing after Sultan. But here again Anushka is back to playing chirpy..bubbly shouting girl …
Ranbir canoodling with Aish in the supermarket? So called intense drama this is. shots of Ranbir running !!
As I said if there are negative shades to Aish’s character as a surprise element is the only thing which may work with the movie.
Preet – this is no ranbir comeback kind of movie, they tried promoting with ash romancing with rk, they tried promoting with steamy scenes, they tried with srk cameo and 2 songs, even tried with bachchan family not happy with film, none going to work looks like. another flop in rk’s way, sorry !
Spelling errors is fine but this is completely different and you mentioned that 6-7 times. Take for example, similar name = Pawan (instead of Fawad) and typing “Puan” (as Fuad). Kuch sense nahi banta bro!
K.JO will have to snip out Fawad’s scenes, I dont think the tensions are going to blow over any time soon. So far India has not retaliated militarily, if that happens (overtly or covertly) tensions are bound to rise and i doubt anyone would be interested in watching a movie in which 2/3 out of the 4 main characters are Pakis. Seriously what was K.Jo thinking? And for all the Paki apologists I wonder what would happen if India perpetrated a Mumbai like terror attack in lets say Lahore, I bet all the Hindi-Paki bonhomie would disappear is a flash.
Katrina Kaif, Fawad Khan in winter romance in Karan Johar’s next
Katrina Kaif and Fawad Khan will start shooting for their next with Karan Johar in November! The film is rumoured to be titled Raat Baaki!
Katrina Kaif might have had a streak of tanks in box office with Phantom, Fitoor and very recently Baar Baar Dekho, however, the future seems brighter, now that she has signed films next to Fawad Khan and Salman Khan! It surely is a nice reunion to see Salman and Katrina come together for Tiger Zinda Hai. Although, we hear their characters are going to be quite old, it doesn’t matter, as long as this jodi comes together. It is a little suspicious that Yash Raj out of the blue, revealed about Tiger Zinda Hai, just after bad reviews of BBD started doing the rounds. However, we’ll let our cynicism take back seat for now. Apart from Tiger Zinda Hai, we had even reported to you how she has signed a film of Karan Johar that will also star Fawad Khan. Already their looks are easily going to win hearts, but the curiosity around what the plot of the film is and their characters are going bloody high! You gotta admit, Kat always manages to strike a brilliant chemistry with all her co-stars. Even with Sidharth in Baar Baar Dekho, her chemistry was impeccable and the highlight of the film!
If there is one thing that Karan Johar enjoys as much as making movies it is mentoring talent. He has already made three movies each with his Student Of The Year discoveries Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. Though technically, Fawad Khan is not Johar’s discovery — he has a slew of Pakistani serials behind him and he was brought to India by Anil Kapoor’s daughter Rhea — the Dharma helmer has made Fawad a part of his professional family. After working with Karan in Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (the latter directed by Shakun Batra) Karan has now signed Fawad for a third film to be directed by new director Aditya Dhar. The film, which has him co-starring with Katrina Kaif, will be shot in Delhi in November.
Does one really feels this movie is ever going to be made ? Katrina just had 3 duds with zero takers! Everyone knows what happened to these winter romances with Fitoor & Bar Bar Dekho. ….and enuff said about Fawad takers in India for sometime now. Probably this Ranbir/Kashyap/ Phantom types bloated her ego and took her to the wrong path where she could have been easily packing her bags and winding down but for lifeline provided with two hot n happening projects lined up in Tiger Zinda Hai and that SRK / Anand Rai movie.
Meanwhile opportunistic KJo is definitely going to cut down Fawad’s role for the domestic audience. The overseas audience can relish the gay icon and can continue their oohs and aahs watching his beard.
other than the Bulleya song and trailer can’t say there’s anything I’ve liked here so far. Initially I thought this would still be a relatively easy win at the box office. At some level or the other. Not so sure anymore. The film will certainly have to be better than the trailers.
Watching the trailers and song promos are giving me this Aishwariya is playing a ghost vibe. It seems like she is only visible to Ranbir in every promo. Even in the theatrical trailer where Aish and Ranbir are sitting in front of Anushka with the ‘Mujh se pehlee see mohabbat mere mahboob na maang’ dialogue, it seems that Aish is not really there.
Never thought of these angles. If this is not a Doosra Aadmi remake but has aish as some bhulee bhatki aatma in search of her lost lover from past janam and towards the end a dead srk comes to liberate the soul……aatma ki mukti kinds…and finally take her away and leave ranbir for anushka ?
Because we Indians don’t have any “bhulee bhatki aatma” 🙂
I see no reason why you would need pak angle in this movie.
I also don’t have a problem with paki angle being there like in JTHJ where SRK roommate was a paki. On same line, most of the characters will be paki in this movie, I think we need to look beyond that.
Anushka looks really pretty and hot though …..Vaani in the Befikrey Trailer looks atrocious in comparison !
I think Anushka has beaten Katrina who looked old in the BBD promotions outings ( have not seen the BBD yet )
Thankfully some of us have more important ways to judge film trailers than how thirsty the heroine makes us! I didn’t know that an actress not looking like a teenager made a film less watchable. I hope you are a teenager yourself, because otherwise your comments are immature and creepy.
After looking at everything so far I think Karan Johar can easily delete or blur the image of Fawad khan without impacting the movie and thereby ensuring a bigger release.
Fawad Khan is quite a bore and uncle types.
It is very difficult and it will mutilate the look of the movie.
Karan Johar can take a risk and release it even if it is in only in one or two theatres instead. Or only overseas.
Yesterday also I read that the government of India has no problem in issuing visas to Pakistani artists. So the official government stand is very clear.
And Indian government wants Pakistan to join fight against terrorism. That means our government is sending peace messages to Pakistan and no more calling it terrorist state.
This is not Hum Aapke Hain Koun where releasing in couples of screens will help.
Moreover its competing with Shivaay which has only gone better with each day.
I feel said for Ranbir, Aish, Anushka, Karan and all involved. But looks like they cannot escape the damage. Not getting a proper release is a small problem. Social boycott of the movie in india is likely, though I may be and wish am wrong
That’s a beautiful number Offside and picturisation and expressions of leads there is cult. Actually Lata M has been singing these love duet for ages. The other day we were discussing why love stories are not working this day and age. I think honesty is missing in romantic stories being told….when heart speaks, its language is the same under all latitudes.
Here is an immortal song of Lata and the lyrics to die for…. i mean romance cannot be expressed better than this simply story of Ek Duje Ke Liye and the unknown leads of their time –
Jis me javan ho kar badanam ham huye
Us shahar us gali us ghar ko salam
Jis ne hame milaye jis ne juda kiya
Us vaqt us ghadi us pahar ko salam
Dil se niklane wale raste ka shukriya
Dil tak pahunchane wali dagar ko salam
Pyar teri paheli nazar ko salam
Salam pyar teri paheli nazar ko
New actors are not connecting because there is lie in the eye….so a Ranbir will never be able to connect come what way !!!!
@livewire –Yeah I agree with your expression – ‘lie in the eye’. Now-a-days the camera doesn’t long enough for the expression. It cuts away too fast.
Coming back to my point – if you just listen (audio, not video) to Do Pal – Lata sounds quite a bit older than Sonu. (Even in Tere Liye, my favorite one – Rathod sounds younger) That’s why I said there should have been a number like that between Ash and Ranbir.
Shivaay may be losing some steam to the finishing line as apart from Ajay Devgn there is no other name to attract the audience. The movie better be good & a tight thriller and must get good reviews otherwise it will fade out quick. I am just hoping this is not an exercise by Devgn to dupe the corporates by announcing a big project and clearing good amount of funds.
After all the big talks about sheesh mahal , big sets etc and having seen Prem Ratan it is safe to say , Salman just wanted to bail out Barjatya and this was an exercise to rip Fox dry. Some of the scene and settings there were not only farcial but laughable.
ADHM has its own issues and Ranbir silence in all this hullabaloo makes him even more unlikable. The guy has no spine !!
Uber-patriotism is the only alternative left for Karan Johar to save his film in today’s vitiated atmosphere where twitter determines who’s a patriot or a traitor! Let people decide whether they want to watch the movie or boycott it & decision ought to be left to them without any external pressure or force. What Om Puri said wrt army martyr in Kashmir, if any muslim actor were to say the exact words, there would have been riots in some part of India or the actor’s life would have been made hell! Ironically we are still very tolerant & would take umbrage if called out on this facet!
“Speaking out for the first time, Karan Johar through a video message put his country before self and saluted the Indian army for their valour. The director condemned terrorism and also declared that going forward he wouldn’t work with Pakistani talents given the current circumstances prevailing in India. ”
This is a master stroke and immediately puts him on a pedestal plus the sympathy attached with it. ADHM is his lifeline and he will do anything to make this work for Ranbir.
Master he could have resurrected Abhi’s career many times over but did not care to. Abhi is a fine actor / star but got lost due to poor guidance. YRF/Dharma would have extended his streak. As a filmmaker kjo always has the talent and knows audience pulse and is instrumental in bringing Ranbir to limelight from the doldrums.
I say for Ranbir because probably he was the one who convinced Ranbir to undercut Ranveer and sign BV and we know the consequences. He is trying to make things right.
Being his own baby – i think he is beyond money and more a less a selfless character.
Following the ban on Pakistani actors in Bollywood, MNS has been repeatedly threatening the makers of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. It started with threats to physically hurt Karan Johar and now they have threatened to damage the theaters that screen the movie.
The producers of the film Dharma Productions and Fox Star met with the police commissioner today to seek protection from the threats of hooliganism and vandalism.
Ashok Dudhe, the DCP of Mumbai Police, has come out in support of ADHM and said, “We, Mumbai Police, will provide adequate protection to cinema theatres as and when required. To maintain law and order, we will provide protection to every cinema theater in the city”.
Well, after Mumbai Police’s assurance it seems that ADHM will have a safer release.
‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ will hit the theaters on 28th, October 2016.
Reading today’s COEAI statement about KJo forgetting to release on Diwali, I remembered a week back KRK’s tweet who said it was a conspiracy against ADHM from Shivaay’s team. Being an insider, we can’t ignore KRK’s assumption easily.
Here are the below tweets from KRK
— “These cinema owners are cowards who are trying to harass film makers. It’s a big conspiracy by some BJP darlings.”
— “Ban on films of Pakistani artists is only to stop release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ so that ‘Shivaay’ can get solo release and I think it’s bad way to get solo release.”
— “If you trust your work and your film, then you don’t need to stop release of someone’s film to get solo release. Instead you should compete at box office.”
MNS just won 1 seat in last elections and still they behave as a majority. Even the smallest parties had more than 1 seat. Still, this kind of attitude. Manjrekar might have a point.. it might be pushing away folks with such waste protests.
So, Karan is chopping roles both in ADHM and Dear Zindagi and finally only SRK will be left out with Raees where Mahira is leading lady and not cameos like in the other two films. Even if these movies release without much issues, Raees won’t get that benefit.
As a result, when Thackeray’s supporters trooped into Metro Cinema to holler slogans and hand out a letter against the release of the film, the police promptly swung into action+ . The action was backed up by some tough-talking by the chief minister. Replying to a question on MNS’s attempts to block the release of the film, Devendra Fadnavis said, ” Anyone found taking the law into their hands will be dealt with firmly .” He pointed out that police had taken strict action and arrested 12 of the MNS members who walked into Metro cinema. He said they have been sent to judicial custody till November.
On Tuesday evening, Johar had attempted to reach out to the protestors by putting out a video statement+ in which he spoke of the cordial times between the two nations when the film was shot and made a promise not to engage with Pakistani “talents” in the future while reiterating his love for the country . It led to a rush of reactions on social media, some sympathising with him for having to buckle under pressure and some questioning his intent, even as MNS stubbornly stuck to their stand.
Authorities at the Multiplex Association of India refused to comment on Wednesday’s events, but Mukesh Bhatt, president of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India, expressed anguish that their efforts to make peace with the MNS seem to have cut no ice.
Director Shyam Benegal wondered why people need to constantly prove their patriotism.”I feel sad that he (Johar) had to make a statement like that… When you are born here, live here or make a livelihood here, you are going to live all your life in your country. You are an important and successful member of society .”
The government needs to send out a stern message to those who seek to intimidate through threat of violence that they cannot hold legitimate businesses and innocent people to ransom. It’s good that the authorities have finally acted by picking up a dozen MNS partymen, but just two-three days in detention won’t set an example. The film received all legal clearances to be screened and yet it faces an uncertain future at the hands of those who don’t care about the rule of law. The law must apply to everyone, without exception. The government and our courts need to hand down exemplary punishment.
Threats could keep the audience away: Ajay Devgn on ‘ADHM’ controversy
In an exclusive interview with Bombay Times, Ajay admitted that these threats are not only bad for the makers of ‘ADHM,’ but also for his home production and the Bollywood film industry at large. He said, “It bothers me that multiplexes are also under threat. It’s harmful to both the films — Shivaay and ADHM — and our industry. The threat could keep the audience away from theatres.
part of a comment I left on Bachchan’s blog (in response to India’s hockey win over Pakistan):
[Isn’t it odd? We can play in championships against the same ‘neighbor’ whose actors we otherwise insist on kicking out of the country (extra-legally I might add..). Playing sports with the same folks is apparently not an affront to national honor. Now those jawaans aren’t being disrespected. But they are of course if scenes are not snipped in Johar’s films. The only true way to honor their lives is to extract money, hafta-style, from the filmmakers, make them grovel to release their films. The army truly did us proud here by refusing this money. But to repeat the point no one is upset about these games. Because of course no politician is creating a row over this. No party is trying to win an unwinnable conflict on the petty field of cultural warfare. Suddenly the ‘nation’ which was all aroused with the actor issue is not bothered at all about sports. These things are orchestrated, these frenzies are whipped up. Hitchcock infamously said actors were like cattle who could be led anywhere. Something similar might be said about all of us, the citizens of whatever nation. We too can be led like cattle. Most of the time.]
like the zany act they’re doing but with Shammi Kapoor in one’s mind and his mad energy it’s hard for any other set of images to substitute for those. It’s otherwise cleverly handled.
I will say that the ironic self-distance exhibited here is part and parcel of contemporary Bollywood’s avoidance of classic genres. In other words this history cannot be evaded and yet Bollywood is always afraid to paying homage or doing any such thing in too direct a way. We see this in masala too. Ghajini was the rare ‘straight’ masala film (much like Khakee). But otherwise you have masala Telugu-style which is to say tongue-in-cheek. And Salman as the impish hero for these films matches that tone perfectly. I won’t repeat everything I’ve said for years on all of this but Bollywood is afraid to take many of these genres seriously. Not just masala but also romance. Johar is even afraid to take his 90s genres seriously (though here perhaps with good reason!). and to sum this up this is also the kind of ‘tone’ that in a very different sense is evident in something like GoW. It is as if the past cannot be approached except in the mode of ironic homage. A Tarantino-like gesture (at least with GoW) which is why I’ve always found something like Kill Bill enjoyable but beside the point (from Leone to Lady Snowblood that tone is already in the originals). On the other hand he handles the mix extremely well in Django. So it can be done but one has to be careful.
